It's not the first or last time Ember has seen April bleeding. Not the first or last he did it to himself.

"I can't leave you alone fer one second-" his anger lilts his accent, slurring his words together as he aggressively picks glass out of April's bloody knuckles. "...one second, without you hurtin' yerself, can I?"

"I mean, I'm fine, so...it's okay-" Ember's neck almost cracks with the speed he stares at the other man. The anger - pointed and unavoidable and raging barely contained inside him - bleeds out from his gritted teeth.

"No, it's not okay!" He catches his breath - seizes a shaky breath inwards. His hands are shaking, April cannot understand why his hands are shaking. Ember never shakes, not for him, not for any man, not even for the barrel of a gun. Steady aim was his thing. "It's not okay, April; not when I feel like I'm going to go batshit fuckin' crazy, thinking you've hurt yerself."

"It's just a bit of glass-"

"To you!" Ember is shouting now, all but throwing the tweezers away. He's shaking violently, cheeks red, chest heaving. April does not entirely understand what's happening, as he lifts a bloody hand to hold Ember's own. There is silence, the hand in his own squeezing for some grounding. "Do you know-" His voice cracks and they both attempt to hide their mortification, "-do you know how much I've lost?"

"You won't lose me."

"Oh I will," Ember reaches for the bandages "...that's fuckin' inevitable, 'cos it's just some glass today, but what about the days it isn't-"

"It's okay-"

"No, it isn't." Ember stares at the white roll in his hands, "...it's never going to be okay again, if I lose you."
