When I get emotionally attached to a character or actor, I physically cannot watch a scene where they die ever again. I can talk about it, even read the scene in fics (even though it does make me cry) but actually bringing myself to watch it, I just can’t see them in pain again, even though I know the character is not real and the actor is completely fine. Like, I’m a big fan of Pedro Pascal, and I have watched everything he has been in, but I refuse to ever watch his death scenes in his films/tv shows again (and there are quite a few!) because it just makes me sad. I’ll watch the films, just not the death part again. Game of Thrones Season 4 episode 8 in particular. Never again, that was traumatising, even for a none fan. So as much as I love Eddie, my brain wants to remember him the way he was, so if I ever watch season 4 again, you bet I will turn it off as soon as he doesn’t go through the gate 😂
I completely relate. Watching That Scene in Vol 2 made me physically sick and it's gotten to the point where I have actual nightmares about it, waking up sick.
The thing is, it doesn't matter that it's fictional, because our feelings for/about this character as just as real as those for a real person. So the grief and loss and everything else is real and valid, too.
I will rewatch ST4 over and over again because it's sadly the only one we got with Eddie, but I'll stop right before he goes through the gate. In my mind, he went through. Or he lived and they dragged him out of the UD and are hiding him now. And I'll cling to the hope that we'll see him again in ST5 and will be able to rewatch ST4 - all of it - knowing that it's not the end.

I saw y'all discussing potential zodiac signs for Pascal's characters, what's your take on the major ones? I personally believe Marcus Pike is a cancer, Catfish's a pisces, Din's a virgo, Whiskey's an aries, Oberyn's either a leo or a libra, Ezra's a gemini or a sag, but I lean towards gemini. Javier's the poster child for Scorpio. Don't know about Maxwell Lord.
pedro character star signs
i’m so sorry it took so long, i was tweaking this so much bc i wanted to make sure i got it right! these are just what i think based on my astrology opinions, i hope you like it! 💕 i added their moon signs for flair bc i can. gonna tag a few friends i think may be interested, hope it’s not an inconvenience
Tumblr media
max phillips: aries sun & moon. his ambition and charisma paired with the carefree attitude and optimism are an optimum fire sign duality and despite the fact i shouldn't, i love it so much. he has an inner child that he spoils with the riches of his conquests (good and bad) & gets emotional contentment when he succeeds in achieving his goals. knows what he wants & is quick to make those wants known. you never have to worry about where you stand with him because he will not hesitate to tell you.
javier peña: taurus sun with scorpio moon (the real guy is a taurus & i can see it but w heavy scorpio influence). he has his own structure and routine and will fight to the death to maintain it. very work oriented & does his best to rationalize his emotion-driven scorpio moon with his taurean logic, it's a tossup as to whether it works half the time. has a lot of emotional needs that aren't always met day to day & thats why he smokes and drinks and fucks. but don’t let anything make you doubt his love for you because the only thing stronger than his stubborn streak is his heart and its capacity to love you so damn much.
maxwell lord: libra sun with a sagittarius moon. the charisma? attractive and engaging af. oddly adept at chameleoning himself into whatever social group he's trying to vibe with. will draw eyes no matter what because so many people know him & if they don't already, they sure as hell want to. it takes him a while to learn to balance healthy relationships and his work life but when he does, you can visibly see how much healthier he is because of it. normally tends to his emotions in private but with help, he can start sharing a bit more. more optimistic than he sometimes should be but it could be worse
frankie morales: pisces sun with a cancer moon. his caring and sometimes cautious nature (with a twinge of homicidal tendencies) make him one that you don't just casually fuck with sexually or otherwise. catches feelings very easy & makes a lot of emotionally-driven decisions. these two water signs have a propensity towards codependence & defensiveness when hurt. is at his best when he feels loved and is supported by those he loves. emotions are always fluctuating and there’s some trouble with self-discipline (which is not the same as self-deprecation). because of this, he needs someone who can ground him
jack "whiskey" daniels: his swagger!! his charm!! his generosity!! the protectiveness over people he cares about!! this has the makings of a leo sun. this charismatic sun sign paired with his capricorn moon create a living example of the most balanced "work hard, play hard" you've ever seen. has a tendency to set high standards for himself and others & is a smidge more accepting when people fuck up, wanting to help them be better in the future. his emotions are often repressed in the name of responsibility but when he feels safe, he isn’t shy about them in the slightest. very confident in his skills & one of those that he’s the proudest of is his ability to cheer you up when you’re sad
din djarin: he is the most virgo virgo to ever virgo, a double whammy of it in both his sun & moon placements. very logical, disciplined, and tradition-oriented. knows how to bargain and budget, approaches problems with as little emotional attachment as he can (doesn't always work though), and is selfless af. needs something to keep him from being a worry wart bc otherwise he will spend every waking moment fretting over anything he can find. remarkably well-rounded & somehow the most emotionally stable
ezra: everything about this man radiates aquarius sun + gemini moon and you will never convinve me otherwise. he's just enough of an intellectual elitist (the big words and flowy shakespearian vocabulary) for it to border on unique and fun & annoying as fuck. every aquarian i've met has a quirk that sets them apart from everyone else & ezra's quirk (besides murder) is his vocabulary. it takes him a long time to learn to not talk over people on accident (sometimes he does on purpose just to be a bastard), but you can tell when he’s really trying to be conscious of it.
marcus moreno: now this man is what you call a pisces. a softie with a heart of gold that is constantly being underestimated, he has more power than most think. his silly and carefree nature detracts from the badassery he's capable of so it sometimes catches you off guard when he goes into Badass In Charge™️ mode but it’s there. his moon is also in pisces, which adds to his gentility and desire to be understood by his partner. this man just needs some love dammit, give it to him already!! his empathy makes him the Cool Dad™️ bc missy and literally any other kid get the vibe of “yeah this adult will actually listen to me and value my opinions”
dave: capricorn sun, aries moon. he thrives with people who can handle their own shit competency kink anyone? and doesn’t have patience with those who should know better. his standards are higher than a stoned giraffe, and is at his best in controlled environments. has a strong sense of self & a short list of people he would risk it all for. not as outwardly expressive but he does have a couple cues that you learn over time. also knows what he wants and is very meticulous in how he goes about getting it; there are very few places where he takes no for an answer. is a very good provider but don’t expect him to be mushy when you thank him for things he does for you.
oberyn martell: gemini sun & leo moon. he’s got more charisma than can fit in the ocean and sometimes it gets him into trouble. this man thrives on validation from loved ones. there is never a worry about not knowing what he’s feeling because oh boy is this man expressive. he’s a protector and a provider (and a gossip but don’t let him hear you say that). can and will cause a scene if there’s ample opportunity, he enjoys watching shit go down. will only interfere if it directly impacts him or someone he really cares about but otherwise will just pop the popcorn and pull up a seat. somehow has all the details of everything that ever happens but you learn to not question it.
pero tovar: scorpio sun (but specifically october scorpio) & aquarius moon. he’s highly rational when it comes to emotions but does have a temper. he’s observant af of his environment & the emotions of everyone around him, and chooses his actions carefully based on those. doesn’t confront his deeper emotions as often as he should bc it’s easier to default to Angy™️ and let the rest of the world come to their own assumptions. has no tolerance for lies and other bs, wants the truth and though it makes him seem power-hungry and manipulative, that’s not his intention. it’s just his way of looking for someone he can trust with the most intimate parts of him
marcus pike: this man? taurus sun, cancer moon. has a fear of abandonment that takes a while to quell but once it’s gone, he’s all in. he’s very empathetic and observant af, will know exactly what you need before you voice said need. will feel guilty for his baggage sometimes and the guilt will make him recluse for a short period until he’s reminded just how appreciated he is. does not play around when it comes to affection & is very eager to give and receive it whenever possible

Look, I'm sorry if I sound like a bitch (once again apologizing ahead of time).
But I'm really tired of this doubt about season 3. It's happening with Pedro no matter what. Physical acting or voice over. He is contractually obligated to do 3 seasons. And yes, I loved the physical acting and I'd prefer that too. But if all he has time for is voice over? Then let him do voice over. He is still Din Djarin whether he is in the suit or not. He has a career and it's taking off. Let him have a career. I'm as emotionally attached to Mando as the rest of y'all and yes I'd be extremely disappointed if he didn't go past 3 seasons. But Pedro can do what he wants and if he wants to do other TV series and movies, let him do that. He could possibly go past 3 seasons and the season might just be farther between all the other spin offs. That's fine too. So please stop making other people doubt him and stressing others out with this downer talk.
Can't we have one moment of happiness without this???

Which of Your Fics
Got tagged for this quite awhile by the lovely and talented @astroboots, (ty sug 💗) and it kinda got buried in my drafts. So in the spirit of trying to clean it out, here it is. I *think* this is all the questions that came with it, but it’s so far back I can’t find it. This will probably be exceedingly boring for everybody given how few fics I’ve actually contributed to the Pedro Pit so far.  Apologies in advance.
Which fic did you think would get a bigger reaction/audience than it got?
None, really.  I’m not trying to be humble, I’ve just got exceedingly low expectations. XD
Which fic got a better reaction than you expected?
Everything I’ve written in the last two years.  I mean that sincerely.  Partly just based on prior experience in writing fanfic (combination of still being pretty new to writing fanfic and writing some very niche stuff nobody was interested in), but also just...Case History got an insane reaction, and I sure as shit didn’t expect to walk into the Pedro Pit, toss out a Whiskey fic and get the response I did.
Which fic is your funniest?
Not sure on that one.  Humor tends not to be a big focus, just a kind of a byproduct.  I don’t think I can point to one.
Is your darkest/angstiest?
There’s a few contenders on that front.  A lot of my earlier OUAT fics were horror-tinged or straight up angst-fests.  My only TSW fic features my poor bee’s first death.  At least two of my canon-ish compliant DW fics are angsty as all hell, and that’s not even counting Like Blood Running Warm, the vampire au, which...well I mean it’s a vampire au, ffs, there’s gonna be a body count by the time that wraps up.  There’s also Structural Damage, which is my DA:I Cullen x F!Inquisitor fic that deals with Cullen going off of lyrium and that’s definitely not the lightest topic (though there’s a lot of that fic I’d like to go back and fix).  And I mean Hotel Hobbies is starting to unearth the buried angst as well.
Is your absolute favorite?
God that’s hard.  Part of me wants to say Jigsaw just because I put so much work into trying to make the sci-fi bullshit make sense for the sake of a fix-it fic and I’m just proud that I managed to finish it.  Like it exists, it’s complete, it’s done, the nerds have been put back together and all is right with the universe.  There’s also some damn good writing in there, too.  But Case History is such a strangely special series to me, and Hotel Hobbies has morphed from a one-off “Whiskey deserves to get tied up and tormented and I bet he’d love it” fic to something a lot deeper and more emotionally grounded.  So I don’t know.  Three way tie?
Is your least favorite?
Oof.  Restless.  More DA:I fic.  It’s not exactly bad, but it did not come out the way that I’d hoped.
Which was the easiest to write?
My memory is wonky, so that’s a tough one to pick.  I’m gonna say probably Risk & Reward.  That just sort of came out in a rush during a bout of anxiety, most of the difficulty involved was just trying to make sure everything was in the correct order (damn you, non-linear thinking).
The hardest?
I mean at this stage the next segment of Case History and Ch3 of Hotel Hobbies could duke it out for the reigning champion.  I have too many fics that I’ve started and found myself stuck in.  But I think the one that caused me the most like actual stress and agony was Structural Damage.  I was trying very very very very hard to strike a balance with the portrayal of Cullen’s lyrium addiction, not wanting to handwave it as something easily fixed and not turning it into a “I will cure you by the miracle power of love and boning.”  That and trying to handle PTSD in a respectful way and just...yeah.  That one took a lot out of me.  Somehow at least that prepared me for writing Side Effects, so the stress on that one was considerably less.
Which fic has your favourite line/paragraph?
Oh god I have a few.  Jigsaw alone has so many bits I’m proud of.  Here’s one:
He studies her, intent, almost desperate, as if she were a map of some place he thought he had traveled long ago, perhaps in a dream.  His eyes search out familiarity, looking for a landmark in the darkness of her eyes or the upturn of her nose or the sweep of cupid’s bow above her lips.  But then his eyes blur, losing focus, and his face falls.  There is no recognition here; her face is still beyond the edges of his map. Here there be monsters.
I am also, of all things, very attached to this bit from Referral (Case History #7)
“I’ve been busy,” Alex insists, shoulders straightening.  “Y’know. School stuff.”
An awkward moment of silence passes while Abigail shuffles for another pumpkin.  It’s a lie. You know it, and clearly Abigail knows it, too. It might just be Pelican Town’s worst kept secret, right next to the Mayor’s pointlessly illicit “affair” with a single woman.  Alex hadn’t been able to secure a sports scholarship after graduation, and without a proper college fund he’d been left with no real options. The kid was watching a dream die in real time, and was doing his damnedest to pretend it was still breathing.
Harvey would’ve understood.
Which fic have you re-read the most?
At this stage it’s somewhere between Hotel Hobbies and The House Call.  The latter was very much written as a bit of comfort during a very very bad month, and re-reading it is very much a fictional hug.

Just to get a gadge on how I’m doing emotionally right now--
I’m emotionally attached to the song Die Young by Max Frost and I’ve restarted the Fire Meet Gasoline music video at least... I don’t know but too many times because fucking WonderWoman84 has me spiraling head over heels into my attraction of Pedro Pascal again
Also, I’m working on something brilliant and I hope you all love it

Second viewing opinion
So at first I wasn’t gonna do one of these, but I watched the episode again and I’ve had the entire day to think about it and I have a lot of thoughts.
[everyone is welcome to their own opinion, this is just my interpretation of things.]
Hopefully it makes sense. At the time of writing this, I’ve been up for almost 18 hours, so I am just about ready to crash.
* Din didn’t sacrifice everything for Grogu for no reason. Him putting Grogu above his creed shows his growth and his love for Grogu. I would have been more surprised if he hadn’t said “It’s okay, you can go with him.” Grogu wanted to go, but he didn’t want Din to be alone either because he loves Din and wants him to be happy, which is why Luke said he wanted Din’s permission, which he gave as soon as he realized that that was what was holding Grogu back from going with Luke. It goes back to the whole love vs. attachment thing that Star Wars is all about. To quote another post: “that’s the heart of Star Wars, that if someone wants to go, you let them.  You love them, you protect them, but you don’t own them.”
* It would have been selfish to have Din say “no, he’s staying with me.” We want them to stay together, but Grogu needs to be properly trained which Din can’t help with since he is not (to our knowledge) a Jedi. It’s what’s best for Grogu so that he can reach his full potential, which is an entirely selfless thing to do on Din’s part. He’s putting Grogu’s needs before his own, which is beautiful, selfless and good and further soldifies him as one of my favourite fictional characters and my favourite Star Wars character.
* OF COURSE Din and Grogu are gonna see each other again. It’s the emotional hook of the show. Plus Din made a promise to Grogu: “We will see each other again, I promise.” When has Din Djarin ever gone back on his word before? Never.
* Din’s still going to be the star of the show in season 3. Not only has Pedro been confirmed for like ever, but they had so many loose plot threads with him that they set up either in the finale or have been building towards the entire season/series: him being the Manda’lore and whether or not he and Bo-Katan are going to duke it out/reclaim the planet is likely going to be the main plot thread for season 3, probably along with the ramifications of him taking his helmet off twice and perhaps questioning his specific creed and being reunited with Grogu for one reason or another, and this time they will stay together as father and son. Not to mention all the stuff with Moff Gideon and what they are going to do with him, more about what they wanted with Grogu, among other things.
* The Book of Boba Fett is its own separate thing. I’m not too sure if it will be a movie or a mini-series or a full series. I’m assuming Lucasfilm/Disney will make an announcement officially once the spoiler embargo lifts on Monday. They didn’t announce it at investors day because it would have spoiled that Boba Fett lives.
* While it is very sad that Grogu and Din were separated and not something I think any of us wanted, I think it would have been too similar to the ending of season 1 to have them stay together at this specific time. There has to be something at stake for Din emotionally in season 3.
* I have the utmost faith in Jon and Dave. They haven’t strayed yet, they have a plan for the series and have had season 3 ready to go for some time now.
* All that being said, this season was one of the best seasons of TV I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see what they are going to do with Din Djarin in season 3.

Company | PEDRO PASCAL X READER
Tumblr media
A/N; this is literally nothing but some trash that came to mind after seeing the above gif. It’s rushed, probably full of grammatical errors and my first small fic for a Pedro. I apologise in advance for the following mess.
Warning(s); some curse words but nothing too crazy.
GIF(s); NOT MINE. But by god I wish he was.
The problem with being use to solitude is, well— just that. You’re use to it, you forget what’s it’s like to have a partner in crime, someone to share the minor things in life with.
So it really didn’t bother Pedro all that much when he took his seat in the movie theater, alone. This was a common occurrence for him really, he’d buy his seat in the far corner of the back row, or as close to as he could— and keep his hat on to avoid being recognised. Admittedly he looked a bit.. shifty, but it usually kept the attention away from him and on the movie.
He was surprised when you sat next to him, smiling politely as you both made eye contact for a moment while you took your seat. Pedro cleared his throat and shifted in his seat from his slouched position to a more upright pose, feeling somewhat nervous that a beautiful woman would be sat next to him for the next 140 minutes.
You didn’t seem to notice though and for that he was grateful. He silently noticed the seat on your left was still vacant and assumed you must have been waiting for someone, a boyfriend or girlfriend perhaps? Most likely. But when the lights in the theater started to dim, a clear indication the movie adverts were about to start— it became less and less likely and he wondered just how many people actually came here alone.
The room fell to an almost perfect silence, only a few hushed whispers from people around the room could be heard until suddenly the loud roar of sound through the speakers came splitting the quiet, vibrating the air around them all.
You jumped at the sudden break in silence and Pedro could help but chuckle through his nose, he tried to cover it up by placing his hand to his mouth and rubbing his lips, but the shaking of his shoulders gave it away he had noticed your reaction.
You looked at him on your right and giggle along with him with embarrassed flushed cheeks. You tuck a piece of hair behind your ear and looked down at your lap, the smile still evident on your face.
“Sorry,” He apologised quietly to you with a grin. He watched you shake your head and look back up at him.
“It’s okay,” You assured him, feeling the embarrassment slowly slip away. Pedro liked your smile, internally stating it was the prettiest thing he’d seen in a while and with it came new found confidence to talk to you a bit more.
“Friend running late?” He motioned to the empty seat beside you with a small nod and watched as your smile dropped slightly while you shook your head. “I wish that was the case but she bailed last minute, and I had already bought the ticket so..”
“That’s too bad.” You shrugged at his response, noting the genuine hint of sympathy in his voice.
“It’s OK, not my first time here alone and I’m sure it won’t be the last.”
Pedro was stunned at the thought of you not being accompanied here more often but hid it well. “I know the feeling,” He added.
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion and you were about to speak but an angry Shhh! from an old lady that sat in the seats below you had cut you off. The woman glared at you both over her shoulder which in turn caused Pedro to raise his hand in apology and give his best charming smile.
When the woman had turned back in her seat with a click of her tongue, Pedro looked back over at you while trying to contain his laughter but the moment your eyes met; neither of you could hold it in. You both snickered quietly together, feeling like two kids being scolded by a teacher for paying more attention to each other than the lesson in front.
Now Pedro didn’t care much about the movie about to start on the large screen, he just wanted to keep talking to you, to hear you laugh again. But with movie now starting; he refrained and simply offered you his popcorn with a smile instead. You grin at him in response and take a few, offering him up the bag of your favourite candy you had just opened to share.
And for the next two hours, no words were spoken between the two of you. Pedro would be lying if he said he was completely absorbed into the movie— he was mostly silently cursing at himself for feeling so giddy sat beside you.
But by god you were beautiful, and with a smile so contagious he didn’t even realise he was smiling too until you looked away.
Get a fucking grip Pedro.
But as you continued to share your snacks because somehow you had managed to fit a whole concession stand in your bag and laugh together at the funny moments that occurred in the movie, he felt himself wishing it wouldn’t end any time soon.
Between the hushed whispers, a slight touch of hands as they rested on the arm rest between you both and the silent cheers as the heroes fought their epic battles— man was he hooked on you.
A sniffle caught his attention next and he quickly turned to see you wipe a tear away from your cheek. He frowned and looked back at the screen only to notice the ending of the movie had already began taking place. He’d been so caught up in his own thoughts that he’d probably missed a good chunk of the plot so he didn’t feel too emotionally attached while watching a main character of the movie die heroically.
Your movement from the corner of his eye turned his attention back to you as he watched you wipe away more tears, he chuckled deeply, causing you to nudge his arm with your elbow and feign shock and anger.
“Oh shut up,” You didn’t keep up the façade for long before your giggle broke out, eyes still watery from the scene but a lot less emotionally distraught.
Unfortunately for Pedro; the movie credits had already begin to play and the theater room soon came to life with the lights now turning back on. People began shuffling and standing but he made no rush to move and neither did you, both silently agreeing to wait for the room to clear a bit more before you tried to leave among the sea of people.
Say something you idiot.
“I can’t believe they killed Ironman.”
“Are you trying to start me off again?”
Conversation about the movie continued to flow freely between you both as you stood and made your way through the theater together.
“—but dad body Thor is definitely a new favourite.”
“Is that your type?”
“It is now.” Pedro laughed at your grin as he walks in unison beside you to the doors of the theater, pulling one open for you. You smiled a thank you and walk ahead, waiting outside for him to join you.
“Well, thanks for getting me through that emotional rollercoaster. Don’t think I would have survived alone.” Pedro pushed his hands into the front of his jean pockets and shrugged his response.
“Thanks for the company. Been a while.” You bit your lip and smiled, looking down in a shy manner and Pedro could have sworn he almost lost it there and then. His brain went into overdrive trying to think of something, anything, to keep you there that bit longer.
“I should get going,” His heart sank but he nodded his reply. “Yeah, of course. Take care.” He watched you turn and begin to walk away, all hopes of seeing you again going with you because he was too much of an idiot to ask you—
“Hey!” You walk back to him with rushed steps, a hand buried deep into your bag that hung over your shoulder as you seemed to look for something.
“If you ever want company again— call me?” You hand over the item you had been looking for, your business card. Pedro looked at the small piece of cardboard and immediately read your name and number printed smoothly in black ink. He doesn’t hesitate to reach for it with excitement and almost relief.
“Yeah, I most definitely will.” He said almost breathlessly in a daze. You smile at him one last time and turn around walking away again.
Quickly realising something, Pedro called out to you.
“Don’t you want to know my name?”
“Goodnight Mr Pascal!” You call back with a hand in the air, not looking behind. Pedro laughs to himself and shook his head, enjoying far too much how his name sounded coming from you.
“Of course you know.” He looked down at the card in his hand with soft eyes, already planning what movie to see next.
Only this time, he’ll have company.

Hehehe Pedro or Din??
this has been in my inbox for too long and i keep trying to come up w/ a clever answer!! because w/o din i would not have discovered pedro, and w/o pedro there would be no din!!! it’s pedro’s voice specifically that drew me to din as a character and just...everything about din i love. but see then i had to watch pedro in other things after i finished the mandalorian. i needed more. and now i’m emotionally attached to other characters like javi and whiskey :’) and i’d never seen GOT so watching his scenes in that opened up some THIRST oof and ive watched movies i’d not even heard of like prospect! pedro became a fave overnight tbh. and i somehow see din (and other pedro characters) as their own entity in my mind. he’s just the master of it all. so. idk what my answer is?? because if im just picking then i’ll say pedro, but if you’re asking me like who i wanna marry or something... ;)

I think Pedro can pull off Joel - I think he'll lean in heavily on the emotional side when he can because that's what draws him but he can be an asshole.
Dave York (equalizer) was the villain of the movie and he killed not just for survival - he enjoyed it and messed with people when he could. Pedro played that off VERY well.
Javier too was an asshole - callouse against most people so that worked too.
I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised - unless you go in WANTING to hate his performance that is.
that’s definitely reassuring. i admit i haven’t seen all of his work, and that was one of the concerns i had. and an emotional side is definitely necessary to play joel, even if the way he expressed emotion is... not typical. or necessary healthy or emotionally intelligent. also usually expressed via violence. and i hope he’s able to find the balance between being aloof and trying not to get attached and then failing.
i hope you’re right. maybe i’ll check out equalizer too. i’m kinda curious now. :)

FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with RogersBase
Tumblr media
I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
Welcome to the inaugural article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
My first guest in this series is RogersBase, a Nintendo Brand Ambassador. For my chat with him, he chose the Zou arc, in which Luffy and his crew head to an ancient civilization that sits upon the back of a giant elephant.
A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Zou arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Zou arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
Dan Dockery: In one sentence, could you sell me on Zou?
RogersBase: Okay, here we go — Mystery, romance, and a little bit of the Mammoth Boyz. I think that’s the perfect way to describe the best story arc in the post time skip era of One Piece.
  The best? Really?
Yeah, by far. For me, at least.
Yeah, I feel like post time skip has been a certainly interesting array of storylines. I think my personal favorite is Whole Cake. So much of the back half of it as soon as the wedding goes awry is great, and the entire Katakuri fight is a masterpiece.
I think Whole Cake is a totally reasonable answer, and I think you probably like it for the same reasons that I like Zou: the characterization and the drama that isn’t centered around the characters saving a kingdom. The kingdom of Zou has already been destroyed. There’s no saving it at this point. The only thing they want to save is Raizo. So you don’t have to deal with the villain hierarchies and families of say Dressrosa or Wano. And the nice thing about it is that since it’s a shorter, condensed story arc, it really hammers home the motivations of the characters and gives us this terrifying villain that’s not even present for most of the arc.
Tumblr media
I really like Jack. He only appears in a flashback for the most part and he’s a scourge of the kingdom. And then he comes back, only to be hit by that elephant. And that’s one of those things at the beginning of the arc, when I saw this massive thing, I thought “Aw, man. I wanna see what that elephant can do. I hope it hits something” and then IT DOES. I flipped out. It was so satisfying. Did you know that Zou would be your favorite when you finished it?
Yeah, I think I did. All the arcs up to that point had really high highs, but some of it just didn’t land with me. So to have Oda move away from these long story arcs that end in big one on one fights and go to this shorter, mystery-focused arc: What’s going on with these minks? What’s atop this elephant? Is Raizo still alive? What is The Voice of All Things? What connection does Luffy have to these giant creatures? And with so many great designs and characters, too, with the Minks. It’s really fascinating, and you have bits and pieces that lead up to it, but there’s so much here.
I feel like the Minks might be Oda’s purest expression of side characters because he’s playing with all of these animal figures that are both interesting to look at and emotionally evocative. It’s him flexing his muscles as a character artist. And the landscape of Zou as well - It’s beautiful to behold.
Tumblr media
Especially when you think about the amount of content that’s there in a short amount of chapters or episodes. There’s so much that’s told about the overall world, the Road Poneglyphs, the relationship between the Minks and the Kozuki Family, the Beast Pirates, so much gets touched upon that will expand in later story arcs. There’s beautiful, immediate payoff there and later.
It has such a comparatively goofy start, too. They’re climbing this giant elephant on the back of a cartoon dragon that Robin thinks is adorable. And I’m glad she gets a little bit of focus here because, with the Poneglyphs, Zou is a really big set-up arc for Robin. So her role in One Piece’s endgame has exponentially increased.
Also, the focus on characterization. In earlier, post timeskip arcs, you have these epic clashes that take down kingdoms, but here you get a cute moment with Robin. It’s so refreshing to see her in a natural element where she’s comfortable.
Tumblr media
What did you think of the Mink tribe’s living situation? The giant white whale tree and the treehouses and all. Do you have any favorite parts of Oda’s worldbuilding here? Not just as a story designer, but as someone who crafts actual places where races and species can live.
It’s cool to see the animals he chooses for the Minks, and how he constructs the power structure and who controls the land at what time, with the dog during the day and the cat at night. The big pineapple trees and the ruins that you see in the Jack flashback, he created a full-blown, believable civilization. It’s always a pleasure to see Oda working in jungle vegetation-type areas. He really excels in this in Skypiea and in his color spreads. So it seems like Zou is something that he’s wanted to do for a while. And how much effort he puts into it is why you feel so attached to the Minks at the end.
That’s really cool. There are a ton of anime side character animals, like Kakashi’s pet dogs and the little animals that hang out with Goku and pals, but Oda really lets loose here with a whole species. And as you said, we should’ve kinda seen it coming with all the work he’s done with anthropomorphic animals. But then, you have the big Jack flashback. And the stereotype of the One Piece flashback is “Oh boy, it’s ‘bout to get sad.” But Zou’s feels like an epic piece of mythology, and Jack is just this being of pure cruelty without any kind of sad backstory. How did you feel about it? Did it surpass your expectations?
Tumblr media
Oh, absolutely! To see a character as violent and ruthless as Jack was something needed, I think. He’s an overall threat, not goofy. And his Devil Fruit is fascinating, as you finally see the return of the Prehistoric Zoan type fruit after you last saw it with Drake turning into an Allosaurus. So it’s cool to not only see that Jack can turn into a Woolly Mammoth, but it’s a Woolly Mammoth fighting on top of a giant elephant. And with the way he gets teased leading up to his appearance in the flashback, I remember thinking “How cool would it be if there was a Woolly Mammoth fruit!” and sure enough, there it is! Jack feels like a fulfillment of the promise of the New World — It’s not going to be a cakewalk. Your opponents will be devastating and Jack is so determined, coming because he knows Raizo’s there and then coming back because he STILL KNOWS Raizo is there. He’s like “You can tell me all you want that he’s not here, but I know, and I will crucify you and cut off your limbs. I don’t know why you’re trying to defend this one ninja, but I know he’s here.”
Zou is kind of a double feature. We have Raizo and the Minks and the lore, but we also have the stuff that leads to Whole Cake with Sanj and Capone. Now, I see Sanji’s whole arc here sometimes referred to as Robin 2.0, because it’s a lot like Enies Lobby on the surface. Guy gets taken by the bad guys and is like “Don’t follow me because they’ll kill you, etc.” That’s always felt a little hollow to me because Sanji is not Robin and they don’t have the same motivation.
No, absolutely. And I’m glad you mentioned it because it’s phenomenal how well Zou has aged. They manage to give these characterization moments to Robin and Sanji and the crew while introducing all this stuff and managing to make us care about all of it. There are people that are like “I can’t wait for Carrot to officially join the crew,” and it all stems from this story arc.
Tumblr media
In terms of characters that get done so well that even though their time with you is brief, they still stick with you for a long time, I think a good example is Pedro. He joins everyone and he’s this stoic, mentor figure, a character type that usually doesn't fare so well when it comes to surviving anime series intact. And obviously, RIP Pedro. But it’s a testament to what you’re talking about because he just joins the crew and you’re like “Yeah, sure. Gimme fifty more chapters of him.”
He’s got this cool eye patch, he has a beef with Big Mom, he knows about the world. And he’s the one who’s sort of the most hesitant to trust the Straw Hats at first after the disaster with Jack and all. But by the ending, he knows that the Straw Hats are the guys that he’s been waiting for. This is the crew that will bring upon that new dawn. And we haven’t even talked about Pekoms yet! He has those ties to Big Mom and to Bepo and to Zou and to Pedro and to Capone, who shoots him.
What do you think of the Poneglyph system? It’s both indicative of the Straw Hat endgame, but it isn’t like this magic map. What do you think of it as kind of a quest marker?
It’s great because you learn that there are a definite few that mean something and that they’re all being held at various places that are run by Emperors. So trying to find them gives you an actual reason to fight these Emperors of the Sea and heading into their territories. They don’t really need to be fighting Kaido in the grand scheme of things, but the Poneglyphs add to the direction of the series.
  ONE PIECE LIGHTNING ROUND!
  Favorite character?
  Trafalgar D. Water Law.
  Favorite Straw Hat?
I go back and forth between three, but Sanji.
  Favorite villain?
  Doflamingo.
If you could live on any One Piece island, where would you call home?
Dressrosa without Doflamingo would actually be pretty nice.
  Favorite One Piece fight?
  Luffy vs Lucci.
One Piece moment that made you sob the most?
“Raizo is safe!” I was so overwhelmed with emotion, seeing the resolve of the Minks.
One Piece moment that made you cheer the loudest?
Sabo getting the Flare-Flare Fruit in Dressrosa.

There You’ll Always Be
Title:  There You’ll Always Be
Author:  Dean’s Dirty Little Secret
Characters:  Sam Winchester x Eileen Leahy
Word Count: 1579
Warnings:  language, character death, implied sexual activity, angst
Author’s Notes:  written for @klaineaholic 400 Follower Celebration. My prompt:  “If you’re the one protecting me… Then who’s the one protecting you!?” I also decided to use it for Angst Appreciation Day. Thank you @mamapeterson for helping me angst when I couldn’t angst. I took some liberties with the dialogue in 12.21 There’s Something About Mary.
Tumblr media
In my heart there is a memory, and there you’ll always be.
You can never be sure if this time will be the last time - the last time you smell her hair, the last time you see her smile, the last time you feel her touch, the last time you get to kiss her. If Sam had known that the last time he saw Eileen would be the last time he saw her, he would have told her everything.
Everything.
Dean kept teasing him, good-natured teasing, the “older brother thinks it’s cute you’ve got a crush on her” kind of teasing that legitimately made Sam blush. Of course, he gave it back tenfold when it came to Dean’s feelings for a certain sheriff in Minnesota, the two of them shooting barbs back and forth until they were both breaking down in fits of laughter. It had meant to a lot to him though when Dean had clapped him on the shoulder and muttered “she’s good people, Sammy,” before pulling a beer from the fridge and leaving him to practice.
He’d taken some American Sign Language classes in college, what felt like a million years ago, but he only remembered the basics like ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ the stuff everyone knew. He wanted to learn more, wanted to be able to actually talk to Eileen, so he’d found a website to help him. God knew, when he set his mind to something, he gnawed at it like a dog with a bone, until he’d figured it out or perfected it. Learning sign language wasn’t any different.
He got nervous every time he Skyped with her, sure he was going to make an idiot of himself in front of her. He wanted it to be perfect, wanted to make sure he wasn’t telling her to go jump off of a cliff or something like that. Eileen was infinitely patient with him, correcting his mistakes with a gentle smile on her face, giggling when he really messed something up. He appreciated her patience.
They’d been talking steadily for a couple of months when Eileen suggested they get together for coffee, maybe even dinner. Sam had agreed, so quickly he was afraid he’d come across as too eager. He was grateful she’d been the one to ask, he’d been worried that if he did it, she’d think he was looking for some quick hook-up or something. That was certainly not his intention.
He’d had to borrow the Impala from Dean, enduring several minutes of good-natured teasing and his stupid older brother shoving condoms in his duffel, despite his protests.
“Just in case,” Dean had chuckled, winking.
When Jody said her name, he flinched and for a second, he forgot how to breathe, how to draw in a breath and let it out, expanding his lungs until they were full, then releasing the air. He heard Jody talking, heard the words coming from her, heard himself responding, but it was all happening in a vacuum of sound and air.
“Thanks for letting me know. Bye.” Sam disconnected the call, his eyes on the floor, like maybe she’d somehow appear in front of him.
“Who?” Dean asked.
“Eileen,” Sam answered.
“How?”
Somehow, he answered his brother, somehow he told him what Jody had said. He could feel the tears threatening, could feel that familiar tightening in his chest, the ache in the center of his head, the tremble in his fingers that came every time he lost someone he cared about, someone he loved. It was all too familiar.
It was always the people he loved that got hurt. First it was Mom, then Jess. Dad. Madison. Dean followed suit later. Ellen, Jo, Bobby, Kevin, Charlie; anyone and everyone in between that he let himself get emotionally attached to in one way or another. It was like the universe was conspiring against him to take everyone away from him.
Now, it was Eileen.
Sam met Eileen just west of Kansas City, a couple hours south of Lebanon at a hole in the wall restaurant just off the highway that he and Dean had eaten at quite a few times. It looked like nothing, but they had amazing food.
Four cups of coffee later, Sam’s knee was bouncing, his fingers tapping on the table, and Eileen looked like she might bolt for the door. He was royally screwing this up.
“You okay, Sam?” she signed.
“Yeah, yeah,” he replied, clearing his throat. “I’m, uh, I’m good.”
Eileen reached across the table and grabbed his tapping fingers. “Even though I can’t hear that, it’s still driving me crazy” she said.
Sam shook his head and laughed. “Sorry. You want to get out of here, maybe go for a walk?”
“You could walk me back to the motel,” she shrugged. “If you want?”
Sam nodded and pushed himself out of the booth. He dropped some money to the table and gestured for Eileen to go out ahead of him. She waited for him at the door, linked her arm with his as they walked down the street, the two of them comfortable in their silence.
They stopped outside the door to her room, Eileen leaning against it, Sam fidgeting, staring at a spot just over her shoulder. There had to be something he could say, something he could do, to stretch the evening out longer. He was so lost in his thoughts that Eileen had to snap her fingers in Sam’s face until he looked at her. As soon as his eyes settled on her face, on the warm brown of her eyes, his decision was made. He took a step forward, cupped her face in his hands, caught her lips in his, and kissed her.
When they finally broke apart, her arms around his waist, his body flush against hers pressing her into the door, they were both panting and Eileen was smiling up at him.
“I was wondering if you were going to do that,” she laughed.
“I’m glad you said that,” Sam chuckled. “I was afraid you’d punch me.”
Eileen laughed, tucked her hair behind her ear, and pulled the key to her room from her pocket. “Why don’t you come in?” she grinned.
Sam drew in a deep breath and swallowed. He couldn’t look away, couldn’t stop staring at the length of her neck, a neck he’d kissed, now marred by deep bruising and cuts. Or the curve of her jaw - she was ticklish, right there beneath her chin, a little to the left of her throat. He reached out and ran a finger down the length of her arm, remembering how soft and warm she’d been.
“People who do what we do, you know there are gonna be deaths, but...this…” He gnawed on his lower lip, trying to hold in his need to scream, to yell out his pain, to flip the table and watch the instruments tumble to the ground.
“Why did she leave Ireland?” Dean asked.
“I don’t know, Dean…”
He could hear it in his voice, the pain, the exasperation, the loss. Every word that followed felt like it was thick, stuck in his throat, blocked by layers of emotion, forced out by sheer will. It was all churning inside of him, everything, all of it, waiting to explode.
“I-I…” Sam exhaled, the sound sharp and biting. “I wanna punch something in the face.”
“Good,” Dean said. “Hold on to that.”
They were sitting cross-legged on the bed, facing each other, the sheet wrapped around Eileen’s torso, Sam in his boxer briefs. It was the first time they’d come up for air in three days, their need for each other almost desperate.
“I don’t want you to go,” Sam shook his head, his hair falling in his face. “You should stay with me, come back to the bunker. I can protect you -”
“If you’re the one protecting me… Then who’s the one protecting you?” Her hands were flying, moving so fast Sam could barely make out what she was saying.
He reached out, wrapped his huge hands around her waist and pulled her into his lap. She collapsed against him, her face buried against the side of his neck, her breathing fast and erratic, her tears falling on his shoulder.
“I will protect you. Always.” he murmured against her hair. Sam knew she couldn’t hear him, wasn’t sure he wanted her to. The words were for him.
He knew how hard it had been for her since she’d shot that British kid, how much she’d struggled with what had happened, with her guilt. He wished he could take that all away from her, carry that burden for himself. For now he’d just have to try and comfort her as best he could.
He lowered her to the bed, intent on making her forget everything that had happened, if only for a little while. He needed his fill of her before she was gone.
“She left Ireland because she was scared.”
Dean’s words echoed in his head. She was scared. Scared enough to ask if she could come and stay with them while she “sorted things out.” Scared enough to reach out for help.
He stared out the window, watching the houses flash by as Dean drove back to the bunker. His heart was pounding, tears sliding down his face, his hands shaking.
He’d failed her. Failed her when she’d needed him most.
“I will protect you. Always.”
He was a liar.

Thanks Yanks! RIP Dad
Tumblr media
For Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS we had a typical crew over the crib on 21st St., and some time around Grady Little’s leaving Pedro Martinez in for an inning too long things started to get rowdy. Beer bottles banging in synchronization on the living room table, obscenities and insults being thrown through the TV at anyone on Boston or from Boston as the Yankees staged a classic comeback to eventually be capitalized by Aaron Boone’s shot that sent us all into embrace on the couch. That 6-man hug.
“But the Yankees always win,” said the stripper from next door who was from New York but knew nothing about baseball. “Let somebody else win for a change.”
 Who invited her over?
I explained to her that albeit ironic, it’s only right that the Yankees “always win” (it’s obviously not literally always – just way, way more than everyone else), as they represent New York. The football Giants are a New York sports team, sure, as are the Mets and Jets, but all over the world it’s the Yankees logo that symbolizes New York (beyond just sports). If we can agree that New York is the greatest city in the world then wouldn’t logic dictate that at least one of its teams boast the most bravado and dominant legacy? Surely we’re not getting such a performance out of the Mets, and by this rationale the Knicks’ past 20 years would be better suited for Pierre, South Dakota.
“So, could you imagine if the Yankees didn’t exist?” I asked the exotic dancer. “If The South Bronx didn’t have the most arrogant, victorious, financially gluttonous, alpha squad in all of sports, where would we be? Who would we be? Would ‘New York’ even hold the same meaning?”
“Oh,” she looked over at me with her jaw open. “I never thought of it like that.”
 “Obviously.”
“Okay, I’m rooting for the Yankees.”
Yankee fans often get accused of being bandwagon riders, which is relatively mindless, especially when aimed at NY/NJ natives who at worst had a 50% chance of becoming a fan to begin with. Personally, my love for the Yankees has grown with age, concurrent with pride for my hometown, also with an increasing number of positive associations with the franchise.
One of my favorite things in the world besides baseball is hip hop, which was born in The Bronx, coincidentally in the same year I was just a few miles south of it. For me the Yankees mean hip hop, especially since their arch rival, Boston, has a checkered past (and present) in race relations, and was the last team in baseball to hire a black player to their team.
I love the Yankees’ pinstripes and that they were the first to wear them, also how clever was the original idea, in reference to the bustling “Wall Streeters” that are equally signature to the town’s character (Umm, why do the Arizona Diamondbacks wear stripes?). Maybe even cooler than the pinstripes is that the Yankees are the only team in American sports that does not put the players’ names on the back of the uniforms. It’s about the team.
I love their magical fate, as even before the big spending of Steinbrenner and free agency were the likes of Mickey Mantle and Joe Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig, who gave the greatest speech in the history of sports; and that other guy – only the most famous athlete ever in America. So even if one wanted to minimize their more recent championships as “purchased,” the majority were more likely karmic.
I love that every game at the Stadium ends with Frankie Baby, the New York legend with “his olive oil voice and guinea charm.” Because win, lose or draw, we all love New York, New York after a ballgame at the stadium. I love that every real baseball fan knows which stadium is “The Stadium,” and take great pride in being one of the few teams that hasn’t sold out the name to some major financial institution or corporate conglomerate. You don’t buy me out. I buy you out.
Most of all I love the Yankees because my father did. Dad was born in New York in 1932, the year of their fourth title, and had me in ’78, the year of their 22nd (2+2=4). I suppose two family members both being born in years of Yankee titles during the 20th century wasn’t such a coincidence, but nevertheless…
Even in the middle of June Dad digested every game as if it was a Game 7, glued to the TV, otherwise asking strangers in public if they’d heard the score, and God forbid a relief pitcher should throw four consecutive balls with a big lead he would slam a fist on his thigh and foot on the floor, cursing or shaking his head in frustration as if any of it mattered at all. It was ridiculous behavior, and my brother and I would make fun of him for it, in spite of having surely sponged a milder version of the same impassioned tendencies ourselves.
A few months ago Dad called me around 10:00 night, an unusual hour for the elder statesman in his recent years. I looked at my girlfriend, bewildered, then back at the phone and picked up. After exchanging what had become our typically mundane pleasantries he became more vulnerable, more interesting, and I stared at my girl, on the edge of my seat for what was to come. Some gossip about Mom, some elder philosophical reflection - what could it be?
“You know, I think…” he stammered through self-awareness. “I think in recent years I allow myself to be too emotionally affected by the outcome of the Yankee games. Do you find that about me?”
It was probably the hardest he’d made me laugh since I was a child.
I humored the old man and offered to him that maybe he should try adopting my own approach, which is to not allow myself to get too attached to the regular season and/or insignificant games. “Just the playoffs,” I told him. “If you’re going to bed upset about your team getting bounced out of the playoffs that’s relatively understandable. If you’re miserable about going 56-45 instead of 57-44 then maybe you should consider talking to someone.”
He reciprocated my laughter, told me he loved me and abruptly hung up. I hope I was helpful.
Last week at the ripe old age of 85 Dad passed away. He had a great run, as they say, just like “the baby bombers,” but much like losing a Game 7, death is never easy.
In his final years Dad was difficult to communicate with, as his senses dramatically waned along with his patience and once upbeat spirit, and it slowly broke my heart and frequently tried my own patience. We all felt the frustration of struggling to have any conversation of substance with him, which is part of the reason the mundane small talk became so commonplace. Though it never became easy (for me). When forced into a corner, such as sitting in traffic or any one on one interaction, I’d defer to baseball, which is exactly what I did at our final lunch together in the city a few weeks ago. My plan worked and I remember commenting to my brother afterwards that the lunch was pleasant, conversation above average, and I was grateful that the Yankees gave us something of substance to connect over.
I’m so grateful Dad got to watch an exciting season, so grateful he got to see us beat Minnesota and Cleveland, and I hope wherever he was that he got to see those three home games against Houston. The ALCS, while disappointing in the end, served as a wonderful source of distraction, joy, hope and excitement for my mom and brother and I during what was otherwise the most difficult week we’d ever all collectively shared. Instead we got to cheer and yell and rejoice a little, and even occasionally cursed as we slammed our fists into our thighs and feet into the floor, all over this meaningless kids’ game. I love the Yankees, now even more than ever, as they gave me such a gift in so many forms both through my father’s life and passing as well. I thank you, Dad. And thanks, Yanks! Thanks for the fantastic run.
