Abortion has been banned in the Philippines for decades which has the effect of hundreds of thousands of illegal abortions and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths because many times people can’t afford a doctor willing to conduct an abortion and have to turn to black market abortifacients and self proclaimed “folk healers”. The connection with Roman Catholicism is obvious and while Duterte has been the closest to an “anti-Catholic” president in modern history he maintains a hardline stance against abortion and it may be a personal belief (he’s not exactly known for feminism) or it may be a product of him forming a political alliance with Iglesia ni Cristo which is the Filipino version of the “far right Asian church with weird theology” thing.

Basically what I’m getting at is obviously American Christians are to be blamed for things happening in the US but these kinds of problems are not specific to “white American Evangelicals” but are a global thing

Hi, i tried to lookup this info online but I don’t want to be too misinformed about this religion. Since you’re a professor in religious studies, I figured I could ask you. There is a religion based in the Philippines called Iglesia ni Cristo, founded in 1914 i believe. By all accounts from what i read, it sounds like a form of Christian religion, but under guise also seems like a cult. Have you heard of this religion? I could be misinformed, however I looked up this religion after an acquaintance mentioned that they attend twice a week masses(a requirement to stay in the church, otherwise you will be visited by church authority), have a certain % of their salary donated to the church (acquaintance also volunteered to document and tally up who “donated” what for the church), are required to marry within the church only, & they mentioned the church is exclusive and claims its the only true religion. My acquaintance was apprehensive about going into detail when i asked why they were doing all this, and were even avoiding telling me the name of their church until just recently. I had a funny feeling about it, but I dont want to immediately assume. So I figured I ask you if you heard if this religion and your thoughts?

I've heard about Iglesia ni Cristo. Indeed, there are a lot of theological parallels between Islam and this Church because it denies the divinity of Christ and believes in unitarian monotheism. From an Islamc perspective, they're closer to Tawhid (Islamic monotheism) than their trinitarian counterparts.

Regardless, Iglesia ni Cristo is a cult in the sense that it attempts to be exclusive and closed, controlling the members of the Church in their everyday life by suppressing and brainwashing members, shunning any form of individuality in order to have them submit to the will of the Church. The NC has a reputation for swindling members out of their money, seeing it as a religious duty. There have been cases where members were publicly shamed and persecuted by the Church if you miss church services on a regular basis. Ex-members, in particular, face danger as they are constantly harassed by the Church.

I can't say I have much experience with this cult, but I do know for certain that one should avoid them at all cost.

Devocional: Lo que hoy está arriba, mañana estará abajo.

¿Cuántas veces hemos estado delante de personas que se creen inmortales, vitalicios en un gobierno, en un cargo público, en nuestra vida?, ¿Cuántas veces nosotros hemos pensado que del lugar de donde estamos no seremos movidos? Creo que a todo ser humano esto le ha ocurrido una vez.

Y la fuente de este mal es el orgullo. Cuando un hombre cree que nadie lo superará ni le quitará su lugar su corazón está lleno de orgullo y de sed de poder. Esto no solo viene actualmente con los altos cargos gerenciales en una empresa o con aquellos que ocupan una posición política importante, la Biblia nos enseña que muchísimos reyes pensaban de esa manera. Hoy quiero compartirte las palabras de Dios para ellos:

"Y tú, rey de Israel, eres un criminal malvado. Pero te ha llegado la hora; ¡llegó el día de tu castigo! ¡Quítate de la cabeza el turbante! ¡Entrega ya tu corona, que todo va a cambiar! En este caso la profecía iba dirigida a Sedequías, el gobernante en curso de Israel. Este hombre había preferido los malos caminos antes que buscar a Dios y su corazón se había endurecido al escuchar las palabras del Señor.

Quizás tú conoces a alguien que no quiere escuchar razones de los demás por causa de su posición alta e influencia. Quizás conoces personas que tampoco quieren escuchar la voz de Dios porque se creen autosuficientes. Cuidado si nosotros llegamos a considerarnos así.

Dios ha hecho todo lo que está en esta tierra con una duración específica, basta mirar las hojas de los árboles para darnos cuenta de ello. Ninguna hoja dura eternamente unida al tallo, cada una tiene un tiempo de crecimiento, un tiempo de esplendor cuando desarrolla su tamaño normal, un tiempo de sequía y posteriormente un tiempo de caída. Así somos todos los seres humanos. Un día estamos arriba y un día estaremos abajo.

La enseñanza de hoy es un recordatorio a eso. No seremos eternos en ningún lugar, no ocuparemos por siempre un cargo o un puesto en una iglesia. No siempre tendremos los bolsillos llenos de dinero. Todo en esta vida sube y baja cuando Dios lo dispone.

Algo sí podemos hacer para que no nos sean quitadas las cosas de mala manera como le aconteció a este hombre por causa de la invasión de Babilonia y eso es mantenernos humildes. La humildad es una característica fundamental del hijo de Dios, sin ella no podemos avanzar o llamarnos discípulos de Cristo. Es necesario que tú y yo mantengamos nuestro corazón lleno de fe y amor en todo tiempo, en el tiempo de la bonanza y en el tiempo de la escasez.

Porque aunque estés atravesando un momento difícil recuerda que el Señor es poderoso para sacarte de allí, siempre y cuando tú corazón se mantenga lleno de humildad. Cuando estés arriba acuérdate de tu Dios y de dónde estabas antes, así no tratarás mal a aquellos que ahora están atravesando un desierto.

Es hora de dejar de creernos inmortales y vitalicios. El Señor necesita hijos que necesitan aprender a estar en cualquier situación, esto es: En lo alto y en lo bajo. Porque cuando estén arriba le darán la gloria a Él y tratarán con respeto a los que están atras. Y cuando estén abajo se acordarán de Dios y también le darán gloria porque Él es el que tiene la capacidad de sustento.

Si conoces alguien que quizás se le subieron los humos a la cabeza recuerda que la oración es la única herramienta que tienes para martillar el corazón de piedra de esa persona. No hagas que baje de la nube con tus palabras, que sea tu testimonio el que hable por sí mismo y que tú oración resuene en el mundo espiritual.

No estamos solos, Jesús está con nosotros y quiere a aquellos que sean mansos y humildes de corazón. Si estás en la etapa de sequía recuerda que las temporadas no son eternas, y que el mismo que permitió que estuvieses abajo es el mismo que te levantará del polvo. Porque mientras que nosotros no podemos, Jesús nos levanta y nos anima a seguir.

Es Él quien nos ha dado el ejemplo. Él conoció ser recibido en Jerusalén con grandes atenciones cuando entró montado en una mula, pero también conoció estar en el hondo del pozo cuando se encontraba en el Getsemaní. Jesús es nuestro ejemplo a seguir, no dejes que el orgullo y el dolor consuma tu corazón. Sigue orando que a los gigantes se les acaba su hora, y si no es así pregúntele a David...

Y que dirías si te contara que sin un poco de conmiseración he desgarrado lo que Dios me dio para atesorar y cuidar. Y que pensaría mi lado cuerdo más tarde de mí si no he dejado de pronunciar que al mundo he venido a experimentar, pero más tarde, sin pensar ni un poco con razonamiento alguno, hiero mi carne y flota escarlata sobre la tina tinta de mi cuerpo natural. La lengua lame el sabor a hierro y con desespero alejo cualquier pensamiento. De un mar de sal inundo mi cuerpo, agoto mi mente con lo que encuentro y estoy acá de nuevo en el ahogamiento de un agujero de lágrimas.

El monstruo de las penas me persigue y he querido volverme su amiga para ya no tener que escapar y aprender a convivir con ella, pero no se puede vivir con tu asesino, ¿será así la eternidad de mí poca vida? Una recaída cada tantos meses y un lamento al Cristo colgado en una iglesia a la que solo voy a llorar mis lamentos. A quien debo acudir si es la voz de mi cabeza la que grita y pide que acabe con lo que tengo en las venas.

Siento el pasto recién cortado, me dejé bañar por la luz del cielo y las flores primaverales sacudieron mi pelo junto con el viento. Si cierro los ojos puedo sentir que floto y los cláxones de los autos dejan de existir. Es el viento quien me acaricia en frío y el sol que lo remedia con su suave calor, el aroma, el aroma sonríe conmigo

Y no hay nada más, es solo eso, es primavera y ya no hay motivos para llorar, pero algo en mí se sigue sintiendo mal y me haré uno con los árboles y con el silbido de las hojas te saludaré cada tanto cuando ya no sea parte de este mundo terrenal.

to preface, iglesia ni cristo is an independent christian church founded in the philippines. their culture is very cultlike, imo, from what I've heard of friends who grew up indoctrinated in it. they cut off ties with members who aren't following their rules, and if you're expelled that means you're also cut off from your family and community.

the whole expulsion thing is reminiscent of how viconia and the other sharrans say they're family but then they quickly discard shadowheart the moment she turned against shar. getting cut off from your community, the only family and life you've ever known, is devastating. and it's exactly the point so it's harder to voluntarily leave.

honestly any modern day cult would fit in with what shadowheart was a part of. i just like to hit random characters with the filipino beam :)

¿Qué es la iglesia?

En el periodo del Antiguo Testamento, Dios dio origen a un pueblo a través del linaje de Abraham y Sara. De forma sobrenatural, Sara, en su vejez, dio a luz a un hijo, y de ese niño surgió la nación de Israel, la única en recibir la revelación divina y el favor de Dios.

Esta realidad perduró hasta la venida del Señor Jesucristo, quien, a través de su sangre, cumplió las profecías que establecían que personas de todas las naciones verían a Dios por medio del Mesías prometido.

Jesús, no solo cumplió las profecías, sino que también redefinió lo que significa ser el pueblo de Dios. Al establecer la iglesia del Nuevo Testamento y afirmarse como su cabeza, Jesús asegura que nada, ni siquiera las puertas del infierno, prevalecerán contra ella.

Como resultado, hoy podemos ver que personas de toda tribu, nación, pueblo y lengua son alcanzadas por el evangelio y forman parte de la iglesia, del cuerpo de Cristo.

Esto es algo que todos nosotros hemos vivido; en el pasado, estábamos lejos del Señor, pero por medio de Jesús, no solo nos reconciliamos con Dios, sino que nuestros pecados fueron perdonados y fuimos salvos. ¡Hoy podemos alabar a Dios con el corazón lleno de alegría por tanta bondad y misericordia!

Es muy importante comprender lo que realmente es la Iglesia de Cristo. Muchos la imaginan como aquel edificio donde se celebran reuniones. Otros la ven simplemente como una lugar de reunión de personas o como un club de fin de semana. También hay quienes ven la iglesia como una oportunidad para ver las presentaciones del grupo de alabanza y escuchar la enseñanza de la Biblia. Sin embargo, aunque haya un lugar, aunque haya reuniones, música y enseñanza, la iglesia es mucho más que eso.

Al escribir a los Efesios, Pablo afirma que la iglesia es el cuerpo de Cristo. En el versículo 42 de Hechos capítulo 2, Lucas nos muestra que los creyentes se reunían regularmente para evangelizar, tener comunión entre ellos y adorar al Señor.

Ser parte de la iglesia es un privilegio inmenso y una fuente de gozo inigualable que nos permite no solo estar conectados con el Señor sino con los demás creyentes. Esto es más valioso que cualquier asociación a un club o pertenecer a 'x' nivel dentro de una sociedad que exista por ahí.

Pertenecer a la iglesia implica unirse como un solo cuerpo en obediencia, servicio y fe en torno a Cristo. Es una comunidad donde prevalece el amor fraternal, el apoyo mutuo y la presencia del Espíritu Santo, promoviendo la edificación y el crecimiento para gloria de Dios y compartiendo el mensaje de fe, esperanza y amor en este mundo.
