i am very slow with writing atm with being sick and also my wrists are starting to hurt more now that it's getting colder- but here's some silly goofy random headcanons while im recovering!! (for johnny, kenshi, raiden, and kung lao) under the cut bc this really ran away from me- (collected over the course of this entire day as things popped into my brain, i apologize for the mass of words you're about to read :'))

johnny can play piano!! he has a grand piano that he really loves and he plays anything from classical to ost's to his own little tunes whenever he thinks them up- he has a recorder attached to it so he can remember them or maybe post his own song one day

(based off the previous hc) if/when kenshi is over/moves in he'll play at night and let kenshi listen in- but randomly johnny will transition what he's playing into the jaws or michael meyers theme and that's kenshi's cue to start running- because now the house is in hide and seek mode, and as soon as johnny stops playing, he'll be searching

kenshi used to play the violin growing up, but he dropped it once he was old enough and competent enough to commit himself to the yakuza- he can still remember some of the songs he used to love to play. he hums them from time to time and has been caught doing the motions of playing the violin before

kenshi loves animals but has an extra soft spot for cats and bunnies especially- he's a cat magnet in places where strays are common, they always flock to him (he for sure keeps catnip in his pocket when he can)

johnny loves his action and hero films but kenshi enjoys romcoms and horror- romcoms for the stories and drama, and horror films because the sound design usually slaps- he also can tell you what fruit or vegetable was absolutely destroyed based on the sounds alone

lao and raiden are way too good at Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes- raiden is on the manual while lao is on the bomb and they can crack the normal mode in like 45 minutes (they're a little slower when they swap places but they can still do it impressively fast (fastest speedrun time is sub 30mins)

johnny knows how to play mahjong after taking a role and having to play on-screen for five minutes- he wanted it to look authentic and thought "there's no better way than to actually play"- raiden and lao found out and now they're all trying to teach kenshi with specially made tiles with braille in the corners

kenshi is ridiculously good at poker- he brought a deck of cards with braille stamped on them and him and johnny played strip poker for a night- needless to say kenshi was smirking to himself as he switched his button up for johnny's

johnny can do pitch and diction perfect impressions of people he's heard talk for long periods of time- you can bet that a lot of his free time at wu shi was spent scaring his fellow champions by talking to them in liu kang's voice from behind a wall-

(based off the last hc) johnny only does it around people he knows well or as a party trick with different characters from pop culture- most often his power is used for evil though

raiden isn't a morning person and actually is super groggy in the mornings- the first thing he does on early days is take a cold shower to wake himself up

(based off the last hc) lao is a morning person and is usually the one to wake up raiden by ripping his blankets off of him- he's lucky he has survived this long, but he tells everyone that if looks could kill, raiden would have killed him long before he made it to wu shi

we all know kung lao eats for a family of five, but that man also naps like a divorced dad after an all you can eat buffet- he is OUT after he's done absolutely fucking up like five full plates of food

raiden really likes boba!! kenshi took him to get some after an errand run and he fell in love with the taro flavor- he also really enjoys winter melon and the regular thai tea

johnny always gets his boba with coffee- he doesnt really like tea flavors and no matter how many sips of kenshi's tea he has, he will always prefer his coffee

when kenshi visits, johnny makes him coffee in the morning too but since kenshi doesnt always like the bitter coffee flavor he'll add some fun home made syrups- he has plain vanilla, but also has seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice, snickerdoodle, sugar cookie, white mocha, peppermint, etc.

kenshi LOVES mint chocolate flavored things- he especially loves the kitkat flavor and the pocky flavor, as well as ice cream- johnny CANNOT stand it, he's never liked mint outside of gum and even then he prefers cinnamon or clove gum (the first time kenshi kissed him he was confused bc he tasted like spices)

I HAVE COMPLETED ALL OF THE STARTING CLASS QUESTLINES IN FFXIV, SO HERES AN OFF THE CUFF COMPARISON OF THE STARTING CLASSES

this will all be subject to opinion of course, but idk i wanna do it.

starting with, how do each of the starting classes play before you upgrade to the proper jobs?

not well on the whole if im being honest. i dont think any one of the classes stand out in the below 30 range, a consequence of being the basic building blocks of the game but still. from best to worst

1 pugilist: its fast, it hits hard, its gimmick is easy to grasp, and it gives you a good collection of tools to easily slip in to how people generally play this insane game. the only bit i have a problem with would be steel peak and the chakra gauge, as steel peak feels pretty useless at the pugilist level [it hits slightly harder then a normal hit, but your basic combo is just better in every way then the set up it needs].

2 lancer: rather plain missionary as far as a dps class goes, though i feel thats to its benefit in many ways as its real simple to figure out and use. plus javelins are a nice poking tool as everyone charges recklessly ahead. what brings the class down somewhat is that it has no aoe before dragoon and that it feels sluggish compared to something like pugilist. hit sound effect is deliciously cronchy though.

3 archer: pretty much everything you'd realistically want from the class honestly, it feels a bit sluggish at the start but when ya unlock the aoe shooting the class quickly becomes one of the best for handling large groups of enemies. its solid all around if somewhat unexciting at times sitting in the back shooting arrows.

4 marauder/gladiator: putting them together because they play exactly the bloody same below 30. thankfully despite the worry i had going into a tanking class, i found myself rather enjoying the kit. the most difference between the two i'll note is that marauder is more aggressive well gladiator is more reactive as far as tanking goes. but again, at the below 30 level they play exactly the bloody same.

5 rogue: id like this class more if its kit was a bit bigger. like lancer its lacking aoe before upgrade but unlike lancer its kit is way too small to offer much variety in how you approach situations. plus the hide and backstab stuff is only really useful, so far anyways, in story moments or open world cheese. regardless, the class is fast and hits well so its feels exhilarating to use.

6 arcanist: its kinda intimidating when ya first get hold of it, but i find once ya get a grasp on the class its actually one of the more fun ones to play at low level. i feel it hits harder and faster then other magic classes, you can do a lot with it, and getting the rhythm for its use feels real satisfying.

7 conjurer: being a low level healer feels agonizing, your squishy, you cant hit too hard or fast, and the micromanaging feels daunting especially when your first getting used to the class. and when ya get the hang of it, it doesn't feel quite as rewarding as other classes as your generally stuck to the tanks ass, and if your arent stuck to the tanks ass then shits gone horribly wrong. atleast people seem to appreciate you more.

8 thaumaturge: unlike conjurer which was cursed by design as a basic bitch healer, thaumaturge feels awful to play on the whole in my experience. ironically you dont feel like your hitting as hard as the arcanist, your slower, the switching gauge gets annoying, and ya cant really do anything exciting with the class. i dont hate it, but i do think if a new player is starting with it, they'd get a pretty aggravating impression of the game.

and now, onto the stories of the class questlines themselves! again from best to worst

1 rogue: massively benefits from being the late comer. its more extensive, more cinematic, the character writing well not anything extraordinary is still solid overall, and well the quests can be a bit lengthy they do offer interesting things to do.

2 lancer: gets to rest at the top of the pile less because of anything specific it does and more so because of how it stands out. the only class quest line that functions as an honest to god tragedy/parable/whatever ya wanna call it which elevates it otherwise smaller nature compared to other class quests. i dont feel foulques is actually all that interesting of a character, and if another starting class questline took a similar approach as the lancer quests then i feel he'd be far less memorable [as hes just kinda a self important ass at the end of the day, despite his tragic backstory]. Still, in the lancer quests case, simplicity is elegance in that the quests are straightforward and the story direct in its impact. inelegant definitely. unique, definitely.

3 conjurer: its okay. doesn't trip over itself, says what it wants to say, and has you doing things that arent too much of a hassle. i really like its ending scene too where... conjurer girl finally properly connects with the nature magic vibes for the first time, and remarks on how much more alive everything now feels. its euphoric in a way, and makes the process of getting to the end refreshing.

4 pugilist: dumb but in a fun way, the quest stories for pugilist dont take themselves too seriously and just have fun with what they're doing and in that sense it makes the pugilist quests a lot more fun then i think they would be otherwise. its not a gutbuster, but its intentional comedy that lands which is to its favour. some of the quests themselves can be kinda annoying to do though.

5 archer: kinda bland and it trips over itself getting to the end. i like what its trying to do, taking two characters who follow diametric beliefs about archery and who get at each others throats, only to come together in the end to emphasize the benefits of cooperation, cultural exchanges and crosses, and to tie to archeries literal history within gridanias context. elezen dudes a bit too prickly though without getting enough redressing on the matter, miqo'te girl is underwritten which makes her struggles not land with as much weight as they should, and i feel the plot takes such a sharp turn into the poacher bandit thing that the ending lands with more of a whimper then a bang. plus the quests themselves can be rather annoying. still, it was trying to do something interesting and didn't completely fail in that regard.

6 gladiator: i like some of the character dynamics at play and the quests dont suck. the story is too ambitious for its actual runtime though, so everything feels rushed and underwritten, and theres nothing really at play here that connects too deeply to what it means to be a ffxiv gladiator either in terms of themes, setting or even just on a functional gameplay level like all of the above classes. those characters are the only thing holdin it at 6 really.

7 arcanist: im not a big fan on glasses characters so a story heavily featuring them and generic genius academic type characters who prattle on about statistics and probability or what not... well that wasn't gonna be a slam dunk for me. the plot for these ones also just feels meandering, and like the archer plot it takes a hard swerve into the new thing it introduces at the tail end to its own detriment, only even more so. at the end of the day im just not sure what they were trying to do here overall. plus some of the quests are kinda a pain to complete.

8 marauder: boooooooooring. not only is the story a drag, but its characters are not interesting in the slightest save for like... one joke about marauders not being good at subtly. plus its difficult to have a story where your antagonistic force is a monsterous animal that doesnt speak human, unless you really well characterize the monster or have good characters on the side. and the marauder quests dont do either of these. finally what doesn't help is that the quests themselves are kinda boring to play.

9 thaumaturge: this one legit pisses me off, and it has everything to do with the story and nothing to do with the characters. im not a big fan of the characters mind, but they're fine. whats happening though in terms of character actions and plot movement is just stupid though, especially that damn jar with the devil in it. and to top it off, the ending feels anti climatic as fuck! the one brother well possessed goes around killing at least a dozen people, yet theres no remark on the matter after the possession and the intended theme to be take away from all this is "believe in yourself :)". fuck this questline.

so anyway here are my recs in no particular order

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

by far my favorite shakespeare play - it's truly funny and emotional when it needs to be, and snappy and bickeringly in love benedick and beatrice really steal the show here. reading it is fun, but since it's a play i'll say my favorite adaptation is the stage production with david tennant and catherine tate as benedick and beatrice. there's also a web series adaptation on youtube that is absolutely phenomenal

2. Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Bradden

by far my favorite book that i've ever had to read for a class !! this is a mystery novel from the mid-1800s, and it's GRIPPING. it follows a distinctly queer-coded lawyer whose best friend goes missing around the time that he meets the lawyer's new hot young step-aunt. i actually posted an alternate ending on ao3 a while ago (it was my final assignment for the class) (i got a good grade). the language in this book is relatively easy to follow, and there's a lot of interesting stuff happening with gender/women/sexuality in there. i cannot recommend this book enough

3. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

a fun dystopia from the 1920s! i think if you wanted to get English Major about it, this is a great companion read for 1984 because of how both of these books are dystopias that revolve around what freedom of speech/thought might mean, but they address that idea in complete opposite ways- compelling! while 1984 is all about repression through submission, brave new world is about repression through overt sexuality and substance abuse. i think 1984 is good, but brave new world is a better read; it's emotionally investing and impactful with the words it chooses to use. there's some race/gender/sexuality tension in there that i think is really interesting. reading it in high school changed my life a bit i think.

4. Peter Pan by James Barrie

i think we're all pretty familiar with the story of peter pan, but reading the original text is just a whole other beast. it's a short read, so it can be pretty casual to just pick up. it's a profoundly weird story and i think more people should know about that. a lot of race/gender/age stuff going on there

5. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

a given. a bit of a slower read at points, but i've always thoroughly enjoyed reading frankenstein. key things that i like: the russian doll format, how stupid victor frankenstein is, henry<3, the creature<3

6. Dracula by Bram Stoker

also a given. all the tumblrinas should know about this one. key things that i like: the polyamory vibes, quincey morris<3, jonathan harker<3, mina<3. also how bloody and graphic it is<3

7. Olive by Dinah Mulock Craik

this is a relatively little-known marriage plot novel from the later end of the 1800s and i gotta say. i was Into It the whole time. of course there's some weird stuff in there, but overall this is a book about a girl with a physical disability that gets to be in love and be loved with a happy ending (!!). that kind of thing was nearly unheard of back then, and so even though the language/treatment of all characters isn't perfect, it's really genuine in what it wants to say (which is that people with disabilities deserve love and happy endings). it's a pretty religiously dogmatic text, so be aware of that. the copy of olive that i have came with craik's short story The Half-Caste which is ! well it's a short read and it's a weird one!

8. Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

an early 1900s utopian novel! this one is particularly interesting because there's three (or four, can't remember) male main characters who end up stumbling upon a secret society comprised of only women that is essentially a utopia. how each man reacts to seeing women control, live, and thrive in their own society is really pointed. obviously a lot of gender/sexuality stuff happening in there. my only disclaimer for this one is that sometimes utopian novels can become a bit stagnant, but this one manages to avoid that for the most part because of the conflict the male characters bring in

9. At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop

this is a book that was published in 2018 but i actually didn't know that until i looked it up just now! what! it concerns a sengalese man named alfa who ends up fighting for the french during world war I. after the tragic death of his best friend, alfa begins a descent into madness due to his guilt and his rage. this is a short novel, but it's unbelievably heavy. there's a lot of graphic violence and hard emotions, but it's written so well. it also provides a picture of world war I from the perspective of the african men who were forced into the trenches that isn't normally depicted. it's truly thought-provoking and beautifully written.

10. Fun Home by Alison Bechdel

yes, bechdel as in the bechdel test. fun home is bechdel's graphic novel memoir that was published in the early 2000s, and it details her youth in rural pennsylvania as well as her complicated relationship with her father as she navigated her sexuality as a butch lesbian. it is astoundingly poignant, and the format as a graphic novel means it's a welcoming, quick read (although when i read it i really did dwell on the amazing art panels, and it did make me sit and pause for a while because of how insanely good it is). this is a great snapshot of a particular kind of queer life in the 1960s-70s, and how bechdel depicts her father and her relationship with him is particularly compelling. be aware of themes of sexuality (of course), but also themes of abuse and pedophilia. everything is depicted with care in my opinion, but this one can also get a bit heavy.

and that's it! ive read a decent amount of classic lit, but these are the ones that i enjoyed the most/would be the most welcoming to people who don't normally pick up books like this.

Dating Captain Marvelous

TOOK FIFTY YEARS FOR ME TO WRITE BUT HERE WE ARE WARNINGS: i havent watched gokaiger in 35 years but I did my best. Im so sorry if this sucks

Marvey, first and foremost, is simply proud to have you by his side. This means PDA is not sparse but not common either. It’s this healthy balance because sometimes you two need your own space to breathe in. This sometimes means sitting in silence at a table while doing something separate from one another and perhaps sitting across each other. Marvey is comfy with silence though sometimes he will glance over to see what you’re doing. He’s curious more often than not but sometimes he does it to get a glimpse of you and marvel to himself how lucky he is to have you in his life. Other than that, Marvelous isn’t really a hand holder but a brief cheek pecker and a “arm wrapped around the waist of my partner” and a “hand on the small of my partner’s back” sort of person. He shows public affection in different ways, sometimes verbal little whispers that only you notice or sometimes slip past you…or straight up pinches your ass. JUst to be a lil shit-

In private, Marvelous is a bit more affectionate. As said before, he’s comfy with silence and simply existing with you but the thing he loves doing the most are back hugs. It’s…very vulnerable of him to do so. Obviously, because anyone can just backstab him and you need to keep your back protected. It takes a while for him to get used to you hugging him from behind, he instantly enters “fight or flight” mode and there is a possibility he may grab something near him as a weapon if not use his own. But as you two slowly work through this relationship, he tends to recognize the sound of your footsteps, the change in the air, the sound of your breathing and instantly relaxes. Your weight against his back is no longer a blade digging into his most vital self. It’s…a net, a comfort he can fall into. So when he hugs your back, Marvelous is kind of trying to do the same to you. To give you the same sensation of something to fall back on…to remind you that you are loved - because that’s what your touch does to him. 

Cocky as ever, Marvey desires stimulation in any sort of situation. He has adrenaline highs and so dates are similarly thrilling as hell. He doesn’t mind slower stuff as he has calmed down a bit but Marvelous prefers dates that get him all excited. It’s almost like a kid in a candy store. Amusement parks are a great one because he adores playing the games and winning you things. He tends to show off to you however he can! He wins you like every single fucking prize he can get, gets on all of the fucking most dangerous ass rides and have the fucking time of his god damn life. He cannot sit still, he has to move. Dates will always be unpredictable as he is, but always involve food somehow. Whether it’s exploring a new city before trying its food, or just going out to hike in the wilderness. 

Since Marvey also loves eating, another date he tends to enjoy are new restaurants that pique his interests. Especially if it’s some sort of whack new thing to try or hella spicy foods. He loves spicy foods, it tingles his tongue and honestly it’s like crack to him. But if you happen to cook for him, Marvelous is over the fucking moon. He can clear away dishes like it’s nothing but your food makes him the most happy man you have ever seen within the fucking universe. He eats it all super quickly that you need to fucking make like 5 different meal portions for him at once. But he has this happiest fucking smile to his face whenever he eats your cooking that it’s all worth it in the end. 

The entire goddamn ship….ships it. But nonetheless, the group are suuuper happy to have you aboard their ship because Marvelous seems to glow whenever you’re around. He’s charismatic, yes, but their captain seems to be…perhaps happier, of course. But there’s this sort of pure elation he has - this shine in his eyes that never leaves, it’s like a treasure of the greatest kind - to him that no one can put their finger on. Ahim and Gai know it’s Marvelous being bitten by the love bug and the others just smile to themselves and nod. Joe is not jealous but he’s hiding this smirk behind a book or in general because…he’s just happy that Marvelous has found someone to love. He deserves it, honestly. 

Marvelous isn’t one for nicknames per say, but he adores calling you his “treasure” and it’s because you are!!! It’s this reverent and dreamy sort of nickname that pretty much encapsulates everything you are to him. It’s reserved for these quiet moments reserved for just the two of you and no one else. He will probably whisper this into your ear with this grin to his lips that is just so full of pride and love for you that it’s shimmering and shining and utterly blinding. He does like being called “Captain” and all but tends to snort, scoff, and shrug off any nicknames you try to give him instead. Though inwardly, he tends to smirk and smile to himself, happy that you called him those and sometimes there are lil red blooming upon his ears…

Marriage isn’t in the mind of Marvelous in general as he cannot stand in one place half of the time. But…if he does get married, Marvelous would want to take on your last name - or a surname that you two decided on together. There is a reason why he doesn’t have much of a surname and since he does love you, he would like to take on yours. If you decide on a surname to share together, he’s also just as happy. It’s something the two of you will have together, unique to yourselves and it’s something you two will remember for all of time.

Ohhh Marvelous is protective of you to almost a fault. He trusts his crew around you but he won’t lie and say he won’t become a liiiil jealous whenever they get too close to you. The crew know not to fuck with their captain and sometimes it’s kind of fun to tease your boyfriend whenever he does get a lil jelly. He trusts you the most though, and knows that you won’t cheat on him or anything. But when he does get protective of you is when you’re hurt or someone wrongs you. He does this thing where he is just barely holding back fiery rage (sometimes Joe or Luka has to place their hand on his shoulder to cause him to see sense or you need to hold his quivering hand) and is deadly silent before hissing out “Who hurt you?” he’s something to see him like this. BUt in battle he trusts you to take care of yourself, it doesn’t mean he isn’t watching you out of the corner of his eye however. 

Patching him up is a vulnerable sort of situation for the two of you. It’s this stark silence between the two of you and sometimes you two berate each other. “How could you jump in front of me and take the hit? You’re an idiot.” “But I’m your idiot.” and there’s a scoff and a smirk shared but it’s an intimate moment. No matter if it’s the end of one of your many, many, sparring sessions or the end of a fight you two had with an opposing force. It’s a moment to heal and to spend time with each other. He’s painstakingly gentle whenever he patches you up, not pressing kisses from his lips on to your wounds but kisses from the tips of his fingers on to them. May they heal faster, may you recover quicker, may you stay by his side always…

Loving Marvelous is like loving the waves of a ravenous ocean and you enjoy it. The ups and downs and unpredictable nature that sways this way and that. Loving Marvelous is an adventure from the skies of the universe. It’s impossible to figure out what you two are going to do next or when to do it. Most of all, you two are the definition of ride or die. Whatever you are going to do, Marvelous is not too far behind you - either trying to ensure you’re safe or joining you in your antics and vice versa. You two keep each other in check but also are each other’s best hype people. It’s a strange little relationship that was once purely platonic and the two of you were nervous to cross that line. It was comfortable and there was no need to cross it until one of you couldn’t handle it anymore and just…slammed your lips together.

alhaithams grandmother introduced us when she was still alive, though it wasn’t necessarily on purpose. i had just moved to sumeru from liyue & she had helped me with direction when i got lost in the city, we were both headed to the market & easily fell into conversation so we ended up shopping together & even though i hardly knew the city i didn’t want her carrying all her bags home by herself so i walked back with her & just as we got there alhaitham was getting home too! she introduced us & asked alhaitham to see me home in case i got lost again even though i insisted id be okay. our walk back to my place was quiet & short & i apologized for taking up his time but he seemed honest when he said it was fine & thanked me for helping his grandmother & i blushed for more reasons that just embarrassment when i replied that it was her that helped me & he couldn’t deny to himself how cute he found me🤭

i know this was the ‘haitham question too but we both think back to the day we met a lot & it my favorite. our lives changed forever that day & we knew it from the moment our eyes met 🥺 it was after kaveh had just graduated & he was traveling around teyvat & while in liyue accidentally got caught up in a little mess me & yaoyao got ourselves into. i was helping her with a commission for baizhu when we were ambushed my hilichurls out of no where & instead of fight i just picked up her & went running.. right into kaveh & all three of us went tumbling into the running water blow us. he held both me & yaoyao tight during the fall, being sure to take the impact of the water & when the water split into small slower streams we were all just sitting there soaking wet for a moment before i was frantically looked over the both & apologize to this stranger i just knocked into the water but when our eyes met we were just staring at each other, already feeling something between us & only broke from our little love sick trance when yaoyao asked if we both hit our heads shskdkdkdk it’d be a long time & a lot of distance before we’d confess our feelings but when he told me he’d loved me since that moment i burst into tears because i did too & neither of us ever forgot or thought about love with anyone else since

My experience as a monolingual foreigner on the internet

So for the 3/4 of a year I have been learning new languages and my favourite way of doing this has been to join gaming servers and to chat to people fluent in the languages, and also to post in these languages on tumblr or wherever else. I've joined a lot of minecraft servers especially and have joined discord calls with really lovely people who play games with me to help teach me their language. (Shoutout to qsmp news discord server for helping out so much!) I've been learning french and some spanish. Anyway. Here are some observations.

Everything is exhausting. My social battery is so much lower than it usually is (Usually I'm really social!) due to the effort of everything having to be translated either in my mind or on google translate

I'm a lot slower at everything while talking to other people. It's not just my janky, broken language thats slow; it's how I process all information around me. It's really easy to get information overload while multitasking. Tasks take longer.

Learning a language is insanely embarrassing. You practically get turned into a baby. You just have to deal with it.

People are really really lovely! A lot of people have helped me out in small ways.

Usually this means that they have to be more patient with me as I am slow. This can't be avoided.

Turns out theres everything that I enjoy in English in other languages! So much more music, games, youtubers, films!

Learning a language has really made me appreciate how confusing english is. What are we doing.

Penpals are awesome. You can't rely on them forever, but they're lovely while they last.

Theres something really touching about how people recognise you even when you can't fully communicate with them. I've started playing on a minecraft server and they all greet me in English before they talk in spanish. It's a nice way to feel included and not judged.

Everything takes longer in another language. a 5 minute long video will feel like a 15 minute long video.

It's important to determine if short-form or long-form media better for you. Generally, Long form = low concentration over long time and short form = intense concentration over a short time.

Emojis / emoticons are invaluble. Tone is almost impossible to convey when your language is broken and you have no body language to convey.

Tone indicators are useless. Obviously. They require a shared language.

Talking to billingual/multilingual people really helped me along the way. Most of the ones that I have talked to didn't grow up learning their second language, and instead learned either as a teen or as an adult. That really helped me since before I always had the perception that you either were billingual or you werent. It still takes forever though.

people are really lovely.

Anyway. I'd like to make a post later on with like. actual tips. Its rare that you hear people talk about the experience of learning a language rather than just being billingual. But I am really enjoying the process. Over the last week Im having to slow things down on the french front, just to keep my sanity.

morrigan is such a fucking edge lord in this game, she absolutely gatekeeps what she listens to but it’s pretty basic alternative stuff. arctic monkeys but only am and fsvorite worst nightmare, mindless self indulgence, a lot of joy division (she absolutely is the type of person to go up to someone in an unknown pleasures shirt and ask them to name three songs), some nirvana, pixies, etc. her favorite songs are arabella by arctic monkeys, back to the old house by the smiths, and probably mascara by deftones. she doesn’t listen to metal a lot but has a few deftones and lamb of god songs on her playlists.

leliana is trying to recreate her life in this game. she’s running from a lot of things, but also beginning to reflect. since she hasn’t been through as much as she has in inquisition, her music taste is much more relaxed here. i think she’d love dreamy shit, like the cocteau twins and the sundays especially. she listens to some lana del rey as well, mostly just nfr/lust for life. there’s a band called another sunny day i feel like she’d fuck with a lot too. her favorite songs are goodbye by the sundays and white mustang by lana del rey.

alistair listens to top 40 and nothing else

origins is my least favorite so i can’t think of much else for companions, i have the lowest time played as well so 🤷‍♂️

varric has the most dad music taste you could imagine. all classic rock, nothing else. i can very clearly imagine him cruising around blasting ac/dc and kiss.

fenris doesn’t listen to music, he just sort of goes along with what the others are playing. he likes slower songs, they help calm him down. if romanced, he ends up listening to the songs hawke likes and developing the same music taste as them and i think it would be a connection for them

isabela has some rare genuine self awareness in the music she listens to. she listens to lana del rey and marina and the diamonds, and that’s about it. her favorite albums from lana are born to die, paradise, and ultraviolence. her favorite marina albums are electra heart and froot. her favorite songs are i’m a ruin/rootless by marina, ride by ldr, and the other woman by ldr as well. hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have is the only later lana song she like LOVES. basically 2014 tumblr taste but oh well

merrill listens to mainly instrumental music, either classical guitar or orchestral music. it helps her focus and calms her down quite a bit. she also really enjoys folk music. some of her favorite albums are shaken by a low sound by crooked still, someday we will foresee obstacles by syd matters, and dear wormwood by the oh hellos.

anders is also an angst fest. he listens to a lot of the smiths, mother mother (and hes very particular about being a “real fan” and knowing them before they blew up) and some nu metal as well. his favorite songs are this charming man by the smiths, 7 words by deftones, and you should all be murdered by another sunny day. calm me down by mother mother as well.

aveline listens to ed sheeran and coldplay exclusively. i don’t know why i feel this way but i do and im gonna leave it at that

leliana has been through so much over the last ten years, and the music she listens to reflects that. she doesn’t listen to music much anymore, but has a couple songs that she listens to. her taste is a lot heavier now- deftones, lamb of god, and some death metal as well. no specific bands, just whatever is the loudest and heaviest. i hc that morrigan showed her a few smiths songs during origins, and the one that stuck with her most is that joke isn’t funny anymore. she listens to it a lot, and relates to it a lot. it’s her favorite song. a few honorable mentions to that are sextape by deftones, and blood of the scribe by lamb of god. sometimes, she listens to the songs she loved back in dao times and gets lost in the memories of that time. her favorite song for that is the greatest by lana del rey.

josephine is mainly a classical/opera listener. i cannot picture her listening to anything else. maybe sometimes she gets angry, or exhausted/fed up with her job, and listens to the things she considers to be “heavy” but it’s something like acdc which she considers to be basically death metal because it has an audible electric guitar.

the chargers just blast dad music 24/7, along with varric/sera/blackwell.

cassandra absolutely listens to love songs all the time. she falls asleep listening to a playlist filled with songs like video games/love song/without you/lucky ones by lana. i feel like she was absolutely a tumblr girl and never grew out of that music taste despite presenting as an absolute hardass.

dorian adores artists like kylie minogue, lady gaga, etc. his favorite songs are shampain by marina, aura by lady gaga, and 911 also by gaga lmao. he also for SURE owns a justice for artpop shirt.

— as usual “oh from somewhere different yet ended up in this specific place by accident.’ whatever, anyway. the general idea that i had for them was that they wound up on the xianzhou as a wee bab, & was hella close with the hcq (they weren’t a knight bc fuck that. they did hang around them though); but during one of the dozens of tragedies that happened between the xian.zhou & abundance armies, shawty got caught up in a predicament that got them exiled (happened before yx 💀 & df molten rebirth). SO TECHNICALLY they met bl.ade way back when.

BUT! they actually run into each other again in the future. bl.ades memories of them are fuzzy, while their memories of him are also fading, but slower. (they remember more than he does). so its sorta like a them getting to re-know each other & form a different bond than they had before & comfort each other in the process.

all these are vague im sosososo sorry but i havent thought too much into concrete concepts yet 😭

I'm very shy around people I don't know, but once I'm really comfortable with someone I'm very outgoing and talkative. I think I have a pretty calm personality but my mind is more energetic as I can't really express how I'm feeling even when I'm really happy. When I meet new people I always do a vibe check with them, although I don't consciously do it. I’m not really interested in people that give me bad vibes and I avoid them most of the time. However, I trust the people who give me good vibes right away. I’m the happiest when I get to have some time to myself, but I love going outside with people that I love. Im constantly trying to understand myself better. I think people see me as a reserved and cold person, I think it's because of my calm face and “don't approach me”-attitude. But I'm really generous to the people who are close to me. Im a person that needs Harmony in her life, which means I’m the loudest around quiet people and the quietest around loud people. I used to be very close to a lot of people, but now I'm quite a loner. I have some friends but I'm not really close to them, we're just good friends. Im a optimist and my goal in life is just to be happy and be the best version of myself.

I'm also good with technology and numbers, but I don't do it on purpose, I just do it and somehow it's right. I love music and everything that goes with it because I truly believe that music makes me a happier person and I can't go without it for very long. I prefer upbeat songs to slower ones, unless the lyrics are meaningful. I also love to dance, but only when I'm alone. In general, I would say that I prefer to listen to music alone, simply because I'm not that comfortable with other people. I also like cooking but I don’t like cooking for others because, again, I cook messily and majority of them always complain about the shapes of the food tbh 😭. I also like to work out but like only if it’s in the morning because I don’t rlly have enough time for them afterwards. But like I’m not a sport freak or smth I only really do it for my health and to be fit not because I rlly enjoy it itself. I also like playing games it doesn’t rlly matter if alone or with friends, like you can always count on me that I’m gonna play with you. I have a hamster, her name is Megan, she is so fluffy and and cute. My favorite part of the day is probably when I’m doing my night routine especially my skin care routine, because I don’t have time everyday to do it but every time I do I just feel so pretty. I love to wear anything that makes me comfortable but at the same time pretty. Generally you could say that I like every color but my favorites are pink,green,yellow,white,bluish mint. I also love doing makeup, but I don’t wear makeup everyday I only do on special occasions or when I’m going out. I am now at a makeup school and am trying to become a makeup artist in the future.

Ive been playing the new Alone in the Dark game. 8n progress rn

Thoughts so far:

It's scary in that the atmosphere is on edge, the music and sound works well. It is combat and puzzle, and I's say its a bit more puzzle which i appreciate because for me too much combat in a horror results in either 1. You have to get Less scared in order to handle the constant combat calmly or 2. Youre SO scared and frequently On Edge it can get exhausting to play for too long. (At least when i play horror combat). Theres decently long stretches where you only look for clues to solve puzzles, or only run into 1 monster in 10 minutes, or where you can run into 0 monsters or 5 in 10 minutes depending on if you Sneak or run around recklessly. For me, this allows for some calm down time as a player and keeps up the background tension of fear as you arent sure When a monster will appear and it wont be for a while but it WILL happen so you have to decide when to sneak and check if youre headed towards a monster. I like that it creates this low level tension as you arent sure WHEN youll be scared so you're always a bit on edge, and so the scary bits continue to be High Level tension as they are encountered. It makes it both a lower stress horror game (compared to say The Evil Within thats more frequently scaring you with Big Things) but also still has enough scary to Be Scary (compared to say a slower buildup horror like Until Dawn where only the 2nd half is really a lot of scares). Like... it feels like Fatal Frame but easier to fight monsters when theyre encountered (because im playing on easy). It also feels a bit like Alan Wake, but Alan Wake has SO much combat that i stopped feeling scared, just annoyed when fights of many enemies was difficult. Anyway. Gameplay wise, id say the new Alone in the Dark is good if you: like feeling the tension/anticipation of playing horror games, but would also like the option to have a more calm gameplay experience. The combat has enough time for preparation that you could calmly think out a way to sneak around enemies or kill them, but also charge in for a quick paced risky fight if you want the thrill, with looming low level tension of a nice slightly scary feel in the calmer parts. If you like Tomb Raider type puzzles, it also has a decent chunk of the game dping those, which i personally find relaxing and fun. And thw game lets you avoid enough of the enemies that you really can mostly just relax and do the puzzles at your pace if like me you enjoy doing that part. I also like the difficulty modes: you can have the game give you puzzle hints or NO hints, give less or more information, make combat and enemies harder or easier.

Mixed on the story so far, but i do LIKE that: its not a middle aged married/divorced main guy looking for his wife/love. (Pet peeve of mine how Many horror stories boil down to that). I like that the house is not a typical haunted house, its kind of a mental hospital getaway, its set near New Orleans so theres a lot of sunny visuals and green visuals and location specific writing which make the game feel distinctly different from a generic haunted house story, the setting in the 1930s also makes it feel like playing a historical game (like Red Dead Redemption or Ghost of Tsushima) at times, which is really fun. It feels very fun to be exploring era specific items, historical bits, outfits, places, and the aesthetic again using sunlight and green plants and streetlights for the setting instead of only the usual At-Night Ruined Haunted House horror setting is refreshing and unique feeling. Theres a few parts where it feels like its paying homage to some 1900-1950 set stories, which are cool. The actual story itself im not done with, heard it was written by the Soma writer though and i loved Soma. For now, i can say the writing is offering Somewhat Unique and distinct. It may turn out to be a typical Enough horror plot when im done. But so far its done enough unique things that im really enjoying it. That it really is a Fresh Horror story. You know HOW many horror games are just... haunted old house (pacific northwest or atlantic northeast up north), rich main character (or tourist), lost their wife or partner, on a simple trip (or trapped now). The plot itself is fine even if used a ton, but then not all stories really make that plot uniquely memorable like... why should THIS story's haunting and history be uniquely fascinating? Why should i care about THIS protagonist? Does the setting look unique or like a million other things? (Example: Until Dawn purposely is referencing a lot of horror so its meant to look Like what it references, but it does differentiate itself enough to be memorable: i remember the prank on hannah, 2 dead twin sisters, joshua's therapy sessions, the 1 year anniversary get together, joshuas prank plan, the wendigo, these details make this story feel VASTLY different to say Alan Wake which also starts with people going to a house out in the countryside, or different from Fatal Frame where a sister goes into an old house in the woods looking for her missing brother who was investigating). My point is... setting and setup can be similar sure. But why am i going to Remember this game's story? Whats going to be the unique parts that make me want to play again? So far ive been liking Emily's story in Alone in the Dark, her real and other world levels are memorable, her premise for going there and her own backstory (and dead husband) are an interesting take on a usual premise. So far im guessing ill like it At Least as much as i liked Until Dawn.

As someone who didnt like FF7 Remake, Rebirth is now one of my favourite games (no spoilers)

I had a lot of problems with the remake, the pacing, the padding, fighting enemies in the air, feeling like a roomba in a narrow coridoor in some sections and a snail in the garden in others. the fact the dodge roll had no i-frames and was slower than running out of the way, that i didnt really wanna play as anyone but cloud and that the combat in general just felt off to me.

All of that to say that rebirth has fixed basically every single problem, the dodge roll is now fast and snappy and really helps, you can parry enemy attacks and are encouraged to do so on multiple occasions. The open worlds give you a lot of time to experement and see who you like playing as and the synergy abilities gives all the more reason to switch constantly, keeping battles feeling fresh. The story is gripping and all the new stuff doesnt feel as much like padding it feels like this is how the game was always meant to be, I even audibly laughed and cried at multiple points (could just be that im on E this time but believe me it is a lot better.)

Going off and exploring the open areas is fully optional, the game has a ton of really fun and challanging bosses and minigames! i really didnt like the rhythm minigame in remake but found i liked it a lot more in rebirth, it could just be placebo from me having a lot more fun but its so so great to see that they didnt just settle into a formula that worked and decided to expand and improve the game and im so happy i can enjoy it this time around!

If you didnt like the FF7Remake, Rebirth is worth a shot

Marvel's Spider-Man (2018)

admittedly, i've been pretty apathetic about playstation's IPs since around the early 2010's. a lot of their dozens of good franchises like parappa, jak & daxter, sly cooper, and wild arms have been put to pasture solely so they can milk last of us for all it's worth, and maybe throw some other series like god of war and gran turismo a bone every now and then. i played a lot of third party games on the ps4 but rarely would i bother with any of sony's offerings.

however, one fateful day, sony announced "we're going to publish a spider-man game inspired by the absolutely GOATed PS2 Spider-Man 2. it's gonna be a PS4 exclusive, and we're having the ratchet and clank devs make it" and my instant reaction was "... yeah you fucking BET im buying that shit". i got it close to release but unfortunately for my insufferable weeb self, Dragon Quest XI came out a few days earlier on the same fucking week and i ultimately put way more time into that game and barely touched Spider-Man. 5 years later, with the """remastered""" version on PS5, i set out to rectify that and i am very glad i did.

think of the aforementioned treyarch PS2 game and imagine that with a way WAY higher budget, and you essentially have this game. it starts off with a bang as you immediately web swing your way through new york city to storm fisk tower and put a stop to kingpin. a very fun first impression, and once it's over you can just swing all over new york with some really fun movement; i know when i first got this game i spent most of my time with it just moving around from building to building, it was that much fun.

combat is essentially arkham combat, which was the style at the time, especially for super-hero games, but it feels more tuned up and engaging than what that would usually imply; my favorite thing to do is to air launch enemies and combo their pathetic asses in mid air like im playing MvC. ah, the good old days. sometimes you have to use stealth to progress, but they've made it ass simple so you wouldn't get frustrated, and in most cases it's entirely optional...

...except for the periodic times where you have to play as MJ during the main story. and maybe miles morales too. these are much slower sections where you have to sneak around enemies and distract them to get to the goal, and if one sees you, it's an instant game over. these missions aren't my favorite, obviously, and i DID groan every time one of them was about to start, but i've seen way worse mandatory stealth sections in games (suck my ass wind waker), and some of them have fun twists like MJ being able to lure enemies so spider-man can capture them and web them up on the ceiling.

tying it all in is a captivating and fun story that sure, while some parts you can see coming from a mile away even if you have even just basic spider-man lore knowledge, it still doesn't make it any less engaging. the last third of the game is particularly intense, with impossibly high stakes culminating in a tragic final boss fight and a very bittersweet ending. two scenes of the ending in particular had me on the verge of tears, something i absolutely did not expect jumping into this game. simply put, if you liked the 2000's sam raimi spider-man movies, you'll enjoy this plot quite a bit too.

all this being said, if you own a modern sony system (or now, even a PC that can handle this game), it's a no brainer, you HAVE to play this, especially if you have any fondness for the franchise it's based off of. this is the best spider-man game i've played yet, and this is coming from someone who played BOTH PS1 games!!!! play it!! or, more likely... you already have. i mean, it IS the best selling ps4 game of all time so... aw heck PLAY IT AGAIN THEN
