can you elaborate on what you mean by romance being a social construct? just trying to understand here, because by that logic to be aromantic is to be against the social construct of romance or what most people view as romance

What does "romance" or "romantic" mean? Most people when answering that question will list specific signifiers or feelings that we commonly associate with romance or romantic feelings, but these things don't have to be romantic. They're 'coded' as romantic because we associate them with romance as a byproduct of our culture. Simple example: Kissing on the lips. Pretty safe to say this action is frequently cited as a romantic gesture. But is it objectively a romantic gesture? No. There are plenty of cultures, currently and throughout history, where kissing on the lips is not romantic. Hell, kissing in some cultures isn't a thing at all/considered unsanitary! Therefore, kissing on the lips is not objectively romantic or some universal phenomenon. It's socially constructed.

The same thing can apply to romantic feelings. First: Feelings of sexuality that often (but not always!) go toe to toe with romance are not inherently romantic. You can be attracted to someone, or be intimate with someone, and not feel romantic feelings. So we need to separate sexuality from romance. What does that leave us with? Great care for someone? A feeling of closeness? A desire to never be parted with someone? Are these feelings romantic? Yes, but they aren't always. Stripped of any other pretenses, you could easily apply those feelings to your friends or family members. What makes them romantic is socially contextual, and subjectively determined. Therefore: Romance is a social construct.

People who identify as aromantic will have different reasons for subscribing to the label. Some may be aromantic because the feelings typically associated with romance just don't happen with them, and sometimes (but not always!!!) asexuality plays a part here as well. But for other aro folk, it's not always that consistent. Maybe they do feel those feelings, but only under some circumstances. Or maybe they feel some of those feelings, but not all of them, or inconsistently, or don't really think of those feelings as romantic at all or in the moment. Romance, like sexuality, is more fluid than we tend to realize, but romance as a specific, socially determined construct can be suffocating for those who don't quite fit in the box. Especially once you start throwing in the other social expectations that romance is typically associated with: Living together, marriage, having kids, permanence, etc. In those instances, some folks may gravitate toward the aromantic label simply because they oppose the rigidness of the construct.

Ultimately, our purpose with our arospec characters (Keagan, Robin, and Daonna) is to explore these variations.

i don’t write for f&f. i just saw the first one today bcos the actual first time i watched it i remembered nothing. i was kind of inspired like brian was stuck in my head and he needed to go somewhere so i had to write him a little tidbit. i hope donnie loves it

i know brian is mostly a sub but i don’t feel like he acts like a sub in this post. sorry:/ i have a tendency to do that with my writing. hope his voice still makes sense anyway!

WARNINGS: established relationship, reader is mentioned to wear heels and a mini-skirt, accused of trying to make brian jealous and is lowkey true, no angst just a fun little smutty kind of argument.

“Don’t think I didn’t see you shakin’ your ass in front of the whole line—“ Brian’s storytelling is nothing short of greatly exaggerated, causing you to scoff in response. It’s hard to condemn him when he wears that grin so well. Your eyes follow as his finger points and gestures to make his point, as if he’s passing over that “whole line.”

“‘Shaking my ass’?” you question incredulously, sitting up in the passenger seat to adjust further facing him. “I was walking!” As if swaying your hips naturally is the same.

“Yeah, but you know,” he’s quick to interject, glancing between you and the road as his knuckles turn white against the steering wheel. “You’ve got those little, black, strappy heels I like- you’re wearing a mini-skirt- c’mon, what were they supposed to think?” The combative nature of the conversation only eggs you to rise to the occasion.

“There’s no chance in hell you think the fact I happened to be walking in front of guys means I was looking for attention.” Your hair whips around your forehead, the winds through the open windows forcing you to heighten your voice over it.

One single, clean look from Brian, blue eyes lingering in yours as he drawls, “You did with me.” that damned handsome curl to his lips, and you land against the seat. A huff of defeat leaves you like your argument deflated.

“That was different—“

“—No, no—“ Once again you have to shout over him.

“—That was different, Bri, and you know it—!”

“—You can’t fool me, baby, you did it because you like when I get like this.” A self satisfied gloat and an affirming nod from him is enough to make you wish you could pull his perfect hair out in retaliation.

Your pause of disbelief causes Brian to eye you again. It’s irritating to say the least how deeply he takes pleasure in it.

“You are so full of shit.” you mutter, shifting to swing your knees in the direction of your door, glaring out onto the landscape.

Taunting, and superior, Brian lets out two victorious laughs. “Ha, ha! I gotcha, baby, can’t hide nothin’ from me.” his pompous words pair with an emphasizing smack onto your bare thigh, and then a squeeze. When you strategically don’t play along, Brian ducks his head forward, fighting for a peek at your face turned away. “Aw, don’t be pissy, sweetheart, you’re only mad you got caught.”

That thrill in the pit of your stomach, mixed with the annoyance in your brain gets the better of you. You snap, “Shut up, Brian.”

“‘Shut up’—? Oh, okay, I get it. ‘Shut up.’ Makes sense.” That grip on your flesh hardens, and you give in order to direct your gaze to him. His expression hasn’t changed much, but his tone sure has. Tonguing the inside of his cheek as he nods nice and slow. “You’re so in for it when we get home.” It’s meaning sent straight down between your legs.

Do you happen to have any resources regarding accessibility in ttrpg design? About design, colours, phrasing of text or anything else that could be helpful!

I spent wayyyyy too long compiling all this - but it's important, and I appreciate you asking!!

Accessibility is a subject near and dear to my heart, and I will say up front that I'm not sure universal (aka accessible to everyone) design is possible, because people's needs can vary even within the same subset of similar disabilities (such as limited vision or blindness). BUT that doesn't mean we don't try to design for and make our games available to as many people as possible. Mismatch by Kat Holmes is a great read on design for accessibility in general, as is Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. You might also check out literally anything Alice Wong has ever done.

To start, I recommend this article on the Lenses of Accessibility.

(for reference, this article is about web/graphic design, so I'm going to try and distill the most salient points for game design)

We are going to primarily focus on a few of these lenses:

Color

Font

Images & Icons

Layout

Readability

Structure

Keyboard

Color

Why does color matter? Well, for starters, there's a lot of colorblind people out there. Contrast affects readability. Autistic people and people who suffer from occular migraines might be affected by particular vivid colors. There's lots of reasons to consider color and the work it is doing in your piece, but in general you can provide a black and white, high contrast version of your game to help users.

There are tools out there to figure out if your contrast meets certain readability standards, such as this one.

Font

Dyslexia and other visual processing issues can make font choice really important. Plus, some fonts really affect readability. Additionally, line height, justification, and size of text can affect readability.

Best practice would be to provide a plain-text version of your game (and beware of "dyslexia-friendly" fonts which may or may not actually help - sticking to a basic readability font like Arial, Tahoma, or Verdana, is safest). I like this style guide for reference.

Images & Icons

For visually-impaired people, it's important to use alt-text, descriptions, and/or captions to help screenreaders properly translate images. Tons and tons of details that could go into this, but there are better people than me to describe it.

Layout

We've talked about this a bit, but there's tons of resources for this. There was recently a great writeup about Yazeba's Bed and Breakfast in terms of layout that I highly recommend.

Readability

More of the thing we've already talked about - it really is a combination of all the other lenses that comes down to readability. Audio versions of your game are always a good way to avoid the restrictions of screen readers, but can be expensive to produce.

Structure

This is tables. Tables are a nightmare for screenreaders, but including them as images can also be a problem. The short solution is "don't use tables" but that's not necessarily great for seeing people. The section in this blog is really great when talking about options for structure.

Keyboard

Debated on whether to include this, but given how many games are being read as purely digital files, I think it's important to have workable interactive elements that can be navigated through without a mouse. Some of that is going to come down to the programs being used to open your files. But if there are things you can do on your end (such as labeling form fillable fields on an interactive character sheet), they're worth doing!

Please understand that this isn't an exhaustive list. There's tons of resources out there and technology and standards are constantly changing.

It's also is important to note that even doing one of these things is helpful. You might look at this list and go "wow that's too hard" but I promise you, it's worth it. My games do not all have accessible versions! That's something I'm trying to rectify. The biggest part of that for me is thinking about accessibility from the start instead of at the end! But we can start today, and that's better than not starting.

The most important thing to remember are that disabled people are NOT a monolith - needs will differ from person to person. Accessible design makes gaming better for everyone!

very random question and don’t feel obligated to reply but your style reminds me of dark souls/pathologic/those types of games in general. that might just be due to the historical context but i’m curious, are you a fan of games like that?

If I had to guess it could be just the vaguely historical setting, religious overtones and occasional darker themes? My knowledge on Dark Souls et al. is sparse at best, people have been telling me to give them a try but I haven't gotten around to it.

#they look really really nice and I trust it when people say the lore and storytelling is on next level #but these days I generally don't fancy games that brag on their high level of technical difficulty it's just a personal pet peeve #they make me feel like I'm being punished and that my time and effort aren't valued and that puts such a dent in my ability to enjoy them #the games I get the most out of tend to be relatively short and self contained indie experiences #with focus on storytelling ambience and unique and artsy visuals #answered #anonymous

actually sorry I lied that wasn't the best part. The best part is that the override is completely experimental. he's essentially a guinea pig. they're trialing something incredibly wonky and dysfunctional on an actual person. Also did I mention it's dysfunctional? The test run of the override wasn't even a complete success. It was only a partial success. It is very likely that had it worked completely as intended there would have been no more chip and only the override and isn't that fun to think about! Cogs inc when they completely ruin a man's life because they are experimenting with methods of making straight up mind controlled slaves

Finally, you absorb his advice, and control your breathing. To be filled is an ardent desire indeed, and the sting of stretch is not welcome for your recovery. Deeply inhaling, forcing it to level until salty tears dry sticky on your skin.

"That's it, girl, that's it." he commends, "You're doing well." A large hand strokes your hair affectionately, immersing more of himself with each kind piston. "S'not so bad, is it?" His honeyed approval is a disguised method to coax you out of the shell you've retreated into. All the while he comfortably steeps his length halfway in. Your bottom lip trembles in an acutely pitiful way, to the point your lover urges you to quiet it by sucking onto it; he runs his tongue along it in order to acquaint you with slipping into your open mouth, silencing you himself as he hums in content against you. You can taste your remnants on him and you palm his rotator cuffs, momentarily quivering around his member entwined with your insides.

"'Want... need more," The only sentence you can muster, dangling off of your wavering voice as you mumble it pressed against his lips. There's a curl to his you recognize, pecking the corner of his mouth it exists on. You're unsure if he's ignoring you for a purpose because you cannot see his face to determine why he'd continue to rock inside you lazily. It's not enough, surely he must know that. "Please, Ani—?"

“Shh, just look at me, baby.” he coos. Tentatively, you slide your arm away from your sights, allowing your surroundings to come into focus. Yet again those patient, blue eyes await your meet. Steadfast, he's your anchor to this world, leading you back to the ground as he moves within you, and reminds you why you're here— who you're here with. To reward you for your bravery, he drives into you at his leisure until he's sheathed.

A gasp emits from you, squirming as if you could persuade him deeper. The sensation of being filled sorely missed to the point of extreme yearning. As soon as you're able to accommodate him, he thrusts into you with reckless abandon. Stuffing your center as many times as you call upon it.

I haven’t drawn them on him yet but i like to think that at some point sirius comes home and he finds cassie drawing on the wall like a bad girl, but when he looks at it, it’s a big wolf, a black dog, and a tiny baby wolf running together. And he just melts and can’t be mad because she drew their little family.

So eventually he gets it drawn by a professional and gets it tattooed

OK I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!

i'll start off with Price: this is kind of a long shot but he gives me like, the in-between of old money and cottage-core aesthetic because he's def the type to dress rather refined. and i think, out of all of the boys, he knows how to color match his clothes right HSAHSSAHH

Gaz is definitely the skater boy aesthetic solely for his affinity for hoodies and the baseball caps!! but personal preference? i'd want Gaz to be a dark-academia babe like FOR REALLLLL, it's why i usually draw him in black turtlenecks LMAO. tho, me thinks he's very much willing to spice up his wardrobe. like, i feel Gaz is the kind of person who changes fashion tastes once a year. (he's so me, like for real)

as for Soap? white dad-core all the way (oakley dad shades, basic tees, thick white socks with sandals LOL JK) BUT SERIOUSLY, i think he'd classify as an adventure-core guy if not norm-core because Soap gives basic bitch energy, but he's the only guy here that can actually carry the basic energy pretty well.

i know most would associate Ghost with grunge, alt, or maybe goth? (tho ngl, it fits with his energy), but this mfer likes to Dress! Up! (he even has a full on cowboy outfit in the COD:M comics like??? LMAO) Ghost is the type and prolly the only one other than Gaz who would be willing to explore his aesthetics. but just for the sake, i'd say he's a combo of grunge, streetwear and/or norm-core.
