Needing a very strong coffee to get me to the weekend. I've done enough for the week and I'm now just freewheeling! What ever you're up to, hope it's a good one. If you need a quick pick me up, this guy does great coffee between London Bridge Station and Borough Market on St Thomas's Street. Keep an eye out. #london #londonbridge #coffee #coffeeshop #coffestall #streetfood #irishinlondon #irishabroad #IrishinBritain #red #redtelephonebox #mytinyatlaslondon #londonstreets #londonpop #thelondonear #weekend #theshard (at The Shard London) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdx9ImasJE3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Symbols matter
Tumblr media
Last Saturday 77 women took some symbolic steps from Belgrave Square Gardens, down Chapel Street along it’s thoroughfare to where it meets Grosvenor Place. It wasn’t a long walk but it was an important one. Symbols are important.
Their destination was the Embassy of Ireland in the UK, situated at stately 17 Grosvenor Place, overlooking Buckingham Palace Gardens. I like to imagine a gaggle of Nuns, and some scheming bishops deliberately picking the site for Ireland’s Embassy (as the dust was settling after the war of independence,) on the corner of Chapel St and Grosvenor Pl so they could keep an eye on goings-on over the wall, while giving a little nod to the big man in Rome.
Tumblr media
In truth, the story of how the building came to be a vital artery in Anglo-Irish relations is less intriguing; although it does involve a Duke of Westminster, a ship-owner from Hull and a friend of King Edward VII, symbolic in its own right but that’s about as exciting as it gets I’m afraid.
Intentional symbol or not, I am sure it was powerful and potent one for the Irish in Britain who walked through the doors of 17 Grosvenor Place as they suffered through the darkest days of the Troubles when to be Irish was to be a suspect, a terrorist or a drunkard and not much else.
Tumblr media
When those 77 women arrived in silence to the door of their Embassy, I, along with more than 150 supporters, stood opposite in soundless solidarity. I watched their dignified protest on behalf of the thousands of women who are forced to make a much longer, and infinitely more painful journey each year.
I pondered on the symbolism of this diasporic community, standing and being counted with our sisters and brothers in Ireland who were marching in their tens of thousands to #riseandrepeal on that very day against the indignity of our country abandoning more than 166,951 women and their families since 1980*. I grew angry as I thought about the ten or so Irish people who join their ranks each day as Ireland’s political class continues to fail them.
Then I looked at the (Irish taxpayers) building they stood outside and noticed that the flagpoles were bare. That might be because it was a Saturday and the Embassy only opens from Monday-Friday, or it may be due to a sensible (but hypothetical) DFAT protocol to remove flags when there is a protest taking place outside an Embassy, or it may be for any one of another hundred innocent reasons.
The reason why these women’s flag was not proudly unfurled above them doesn’t really matter. It mattered that they stood on Chapel St in London under bare flagpoles as ten more women made their journey on 24 September 2016. Symbols matter.
*It is important to note that these numbers are an underestimation as not all women will provide their Irish addresses at UK abortion clinics for reasons of confidentiality or otherwise, while many women who are unable to travel to another country for abortion services access the abortion pill online.

Used Storify to hold onto the various threads of conversation prompted by the London Irish Centre's recent "Being Irish in Britain" conference:
On Saturday, April 5, 2014 the London Irish Centre held a one-day conference to discuss what it means today to be Irish in Britain. Like many, I followed along from afar -- in transit between Washington, DC and New York at the time.
Much to consider here around the experiences of emigration and immigration, issues of identity, community supports, political interests, and the differences between past and present.

Waiting for the photos. As we were walking past this photo booth in Old Spitalfields Market the other day, I couldn't help but try to capture this. I loved this young girl's enthusiasm as she waited for the photos to print. Bus travel, central London, December 2021. It's crazy to me how people can politicize something as small as mask wearing, when so many around the world do it as a mark of respect to their fellow travellers. Just to ensure they don't pass on their cold or sniffles. This photo was taken on a bus from Liverpool Street to London Bridge and I really like the colours in this. #london #tfl #bus #travel #londonstreets #londonpop #londonbylondoners #mysecretlondon #mytinyatlaslondon #exploringlondon #londonirish #IrishinBritain #irishinlondon #irishabroad (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXvycWFMWTw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Not having a great week to be honest. Hurt my back and have to go I to work every day this week which doesn't help. I normally walk to Lewisham in the mornings and get a train to Victoria but got a train to Charing Cross instead. Upside of all that, I managed to get this photo at Hither Green station this morning. I love the orange light burning through the mist and fog. #hithergreen #london #hithergreenstation #trainline #trainplatform #train #autumn #november #orangelight #LondonIrish #IrishinBritain #irishabroad #selondon #mysecretlondon #londonguru #londonforyou #londonstreets #londonpop #irishblogger #londoncity #thelondonear #mysecretlondon (at Hither Green) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV1AnTYsPdP/?utm_medium=tumblr

The shuttle always seems to have a space age / futuristic feel to it. Travelling earlier this week, I seemed to avoid the crowds. Emptiness everywhere. This could have been the shuttle to the space station. #shuttle #gatwickairport #tourist #northterminal #london #travel #irishinlondon #irishabroad #IrishinBritain #londonirish #spaceage #futuristic #voyage #voyager #traveller #empty #train #trainstation #accidentalselfie #reflection #leadinglines #vanishingpoint #reflections (at Gatwick Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWjVDMvMAFN/?utm_medium=tumblr

I got yelled at by a train employee as I took this photo last night. I was on the yellow line. Maybe it's because it was Friday night, maybe it's because it was just before 9pm. But I think it was worth it to get this. Thanks to my fellow traveller for the pose. #london #waterloo #railwaystation #mindthegap #trainplatform #londonstreets #mysecretlondon #londonguru #irishinlondon #irishabroad #IrishinBritain #londonirish #weekend #nightscape (at Waterloo East Railway Station - Platform A) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTaTP1iMUfu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Loving the light and shadows in London town this morning. I don't want to say it too loud, just in case, but it feels like this morning is the first day of summer. Fore Abbey, Co. Westmeath. I'm starting to think I should make a series of retro postcards of Ireland. This is the old Benedictine Abbey at Fore. There's supposed to seven wonders of Fore but that evening, I was in awe that it didn't rain. Inspiring man and bird. It's Friday, a Bank Holiday weekend and many reasons to be cheerful. There are some interesting street art pieces around Lewisham. I've seen art by @nathanbowenart in the city centre, full of reds and blues. This is the first I've seen with more muted colours. I really like it. #Lewisham #londonstreets #streetart #streetartist #southeastlondon #arch #trainstation #londonlifeinc #londonbylondoners #ig_london #londondisclosure #irishinlondon #irishabroad #IrishinBritain #nathanbowenart (at Lewisham) https://www.instagram.com/p/COSDWT6nVdM/?igshid=b6cxx02ajun9

It's getting dark so early, me no likey. So, here's another shot from a drive with my Mam, Dad and @gaanerd86. We went down many many back roads and internet black spots. When we did get to Lough Lene, the the sun was bouncing off the water in a just 'oh so perfect' way. #LoughLene #Collinstown #Westmeath #ireland #discoverireland #tourismireland #tourist #travel #visitireland #irishinlondon #IrishinBritain #irishabroad #reflection #lake (at Lough Lene Collinstown, Westmeath) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTnQo45sDwZ/?utm_medium=tumblr
