Frieren timeline

The only timeline available on the wiki isn’t super fleshed out with exact dates and counting backwards etc. So I decided to make my own.

Notes:

1. Spoilers for up to manga ch119 (the most recent at this time)

2. Even if it’s likely just a rough measure (“three hundred years ago”), I’m gonna assume when doing my math that it was exactly 300 years, because otherwise I can’t do most of the math

3. I skip most events that don’t have an exact year, eg Fern and Stark respective being taken in by Heiter and Eisen. I do make some estimates (eg Sein’s birthday, we only know he’s in mid-30s so he can’t have been born any further back than year xx).

4. Standardised year 0 as the year the demon king was defeated

5. Realised about 2/3rds through that I could be writing down chapter citations but at that point it was too late lol sorry

**Unclear just when was the Frieren/Hero of the South meeting, so it could technically be anywhere before, but -11 is the most recent it could be

***Frieren says it’s been 80 years in year 77. If she’s being precise then this is the date—but I have doubts as Qual was sealed in the Central Lands, and Hero Party should be well into the Northern Plateau near the goddess monument by this point.

^Technically I think Macht starts to serve a leetle bit before the demon king is defeated, but no time frame given for how long it took Macht and Glück to have those convos

^^To be more precise: they start the year’s winter with Kraft. Then it gets warm, and Stark’s birthday happens. Harvest festivals are usually in autumn, which is when they meet Sein, and then it gets cold enough for the gang to wear their winter gear again, and they spend a winter (or a cold snap?) with Sein. When they get to Auberst they spend an additional two months training with Fern while waiting for the exam to start. But when they finally leave Auberst in ch61, and aren’t wearing their winter clothes anymore, it’s still listed as 29 years post-Himmel death??? There’s a mention of it being because they’re in the volcanic belt… But seriously, year 79 goes on and on. I honestly think the authors just forgot to find a good spot to switch that over lol

Dear future self... May 27, 24

I feel like a broken record just saying the same thing every time that I've meant to sit down and write but there's just been so much going on & I've been mentally exhausted so I haven't felt like wanting to write. Let's recap the last like 3.5 weeks first: May 3rd weekend I was out at Colesons. May 5 we were supposed to have a date day & went for lunch at BPs but didn't get to do anything else as he had to work which was ok, I think I went for a tractor ride. May 6 came back home May 7 Went for sushi with Amber & Naythan, then back to their house for some board games May 9 went to Color me mine with Sasha which was nice to catch up May 10 went to Ambers, was over before she was home so I hung with Naythan while he cooked dinner. Amber had seemed a bit off but we watched the oilers game mostly, we sat & chatted for a while but it was a bit off, I think she was just tired but if Im being honest it was the first time that I felt like it was a bit more forced. That night on my way home I realized the northern lights were unreal and they were, so I drove to Edworthy dog park with nova & we watched for a while, had a call with Coleson. May 11 was Mothers day celebration which ended up going well, told meliss about coleson which was nice finally, we went to edworthy dog park and a few hours. then went to Kambers house to catch up. May 12 went to church and then drove out to stay with Coleson. Went for food for mothers day with his fam & watched the oilers game. That whole week was just busy between work & visiting. On the tuesday I had gone to Coledale to watch Ari's game but it got cancelled. Thursday was thunder storming but had a tractor ride with Coleson. May 18th the Friday I think I was feeling off again, just worried about the usual stuff. we went to visit his friend & his wife from Fort Mac who were in town which was pretty nice, they were sweet but yea still felt off that night. The next morning I thought I could sleep it off but I didn't & woke up grumpy again. While we were making breakfast I shared my overthinking again which Coleson took really well, I was feeling disconnected from friends again so that played into it. We drove into Lethbridge for a date day, on the drive he had asked if I thought I could move out there which sparked a good conversation. We went for mini golf and D dessert spot cafe & then went home to watch the oilers game together. Definitely felt better afterwards which is good. Sunday night I went back home. May 20th went for dinner with melissa & Johan which was good, interesting. May 21st went to cold garden with Shruti & Sasha & Cassie which was alright, just kinda feel weird with them sometimes, I feel like its a bit harder to keep conversation with them. May 23 afternoon picked up Ed and went to edmonton till friday night. Was super exhausted from that. Overall was good, visited Elaine who we might do some cool christian work with, met a FAC founder. Good conversation with Ed but it sparked some questions. When I got home I talked with Coleson & thats when I wrote the post before this about feeling like maybe he wasnt super invested in meeting/spending time with my family & I wanted to feel more important than yard work etc which we ended up having a talk saturday morning after my massage, I shared how I was feeling about it & just anxieties about the summer & spending enough time together & that golf felt like it was taking more priority & I was trying to be realistic with expectations etc. I was really worried how he took it, I was scared after the next calls that he was processing it but still sounded sad & I felt like I really ruined things a bit, but he called at 3:30 that he was going to get ready to come in to meet meliss which showed a lot. May 25th he came in and we had dinner with Meliss which I think was good. May 26th we took it easy, went for a walk, picked up a game & went to steven & amandas which was great to celebrate her birthday, mom joined for dinner & games. Then we went to Activate which was super fun.

- The Mindflayer stabs Billy 7 times (not found by me - that post here. I also double checked this and it's true.)

- In the 004 teaser, the volume dial is turned to the number 7

- Mike’s bday is the 7th of April (the 4th month) and Will was born in March (the 3rd month) 4+3=7 (pointed out by @smalltown-byers)

- Mike's bday is in the 4th month, so 4+7 = 11 (7/11 reference)

She could only acknowledge the sacrifices of her mother’s paranoia and insanity driving her to act out of her driven mind. Forced to push her first daughter gifted to leave the nest before the danger of a curse to seal her away. What a feeling she learned when fought as a child, not entirely understanding why her fragile and injured mother could dare teach her violent arts of breaking bones. No matter what she could with the trait passed down to obey like she did, the inhuman strength was supposed to be her brother’s. Was she supposed to be a man, or play a coward of a woman like she was last time she saw her.

Perhaps it was insane to teach her child to fight and out of turn for her to act this way on the day she was supposed to depart away to Fontaine. To run, a virtue truly from her heart, passion but plainly she didn’t know how to fly by herself if she nested warmly alone in her noble home. But maybe it was a better hesitation than she thought distracted by the differences of Liyue Harbor the sounds, the unknown to the factors of cultures shifted from them and herself.

She was bringing too much attention to herself. A distraction to few of the many bustling crowds, it did not help if she was holding her vision from Inazuma. The crafted origin of her homelands if only it was possible to cover it up, but she cannot do anything to god blessed item. Afraid to break such a glorified object that could possibly bring her even more fear brought among her. She could not say much but the expensive silks of her layers of clothing on her and mora tied as the side of her sash. Perhaps this was a better choice to exchange for more temporary stability.

Parting for her meticulous layers, as if she felt bare to foreign weather. It was an uncommonly shifted need to adapt. To live is to survive the world that felt dangerous in the as if shores she arrived at the port, soaking her soles. As the hydro element felt attuned as she gazed over it, perhaps she mistaken it for cryo for a few seconds. The newly acquired clothing felt perhaps embarrassing to be seen wearing it, but it must be done. Exposing skin could throw them off of her, needing eyes to attend too afforded a pair of glasses to wear. No longer blinded and blurred by the setback.

She planned back to see the village of her mother, in which she thought would be best to rely on them for a settlement. As quick she wanted to live again, the feeling of the forest life once again she’ll dearly make it possible to work away her favor and honor. The face of her selfish wish from her mother’s demands, for once she’ll do her justice in living in the truth then the lie. She was the selfish one in the end to drink the god’s gift in the journey of living outside the box.

The hardest part was truly talking to the leader of the community of Qingce Village. Basic knowledge of contract is the word of the old in Liyue, for that it must be fair to do so as a way to be accepted. As long as she can work what she can there’ll be no one to stop her from becoming something unexpected. Perhaps if she’ll survive the jump she’s making herself take, someday she’ll see her mother smile once more. One day she will not need to hear rumors of the walls that could speak about her siblings and the warmth of the sun not the gaze of cold expectations.

As if her eyes hesitated at the time she heard from the old woman, she warmly laughed off her noble character she played. She felt warm, her own layer of her mask cracking and her face wrinkling in confusion. Perhaps one day she’ll understand why she left, accepted into the community and warm tears to the location to her new home. Gazing at the moon and the stars among the indigo sky, on the roof. Feeling alone at the end of the ledge wondering why does she feel this sadness?

It had been an additional two years she had hesitated a few times to work her way into the community once again, when the old woman told her to visit the night of the lantern festival and live a bit. Scolding her for something as tedious as working too much for others and not herself. She wishes to stay, tending her home, to the children in the village. Listen over to the elderly and middle aged for things to do, when she returns from the commissions in the early morning before. She could not see herself anymore as a woman who could stand sitting looking beautiful in wealth in silken in silence without someone or a book in hand. Yet here she is fidgeting to do something in Liyue Harbor, gazing at the port away from the festivity waiting for it to end. Hands shaking over the candle lights, flashing sounds of fireworks behind her.

Leaning against the stone fencing far away from the peaceful cold tones wondering about Inazuma. Her 2nd younger sister, Kaori was already sent to Fontaine after her brother 3rd youngest Daichi was prepared. Who knows where, but hope the best for him. That his wife would not stop him from doing what he loved in the end. Becoming an alchemist and a doctor, something she felt taken from her life however perhaps this is the exchange of her natural build taking away his inhuman strength. She loved every single child born in that house. Chie, she has yet to entirely meet, but she must have been close to a mischievous child she was when she was younger running in the fields. Last time she remembered from her nanny telling her before sending her off from the interception of her mother that week she fled.

Thinking about it now she was alone on the side of this world, the chills returned. It felt suffocating and an uncomfortable delusion to find herself drowning in the sea of doubt. The constellation of her verse was a siren, or a mermaid. They long and lost their dreams and here she was living the dream not of hers but someone else's, what could she say now but choke back the mourning not of death but the new life given to her. Perhaps she’ll love the gods for this life for hers, the opportunities to breath in the beauty of Liyue. Live for the virtues of Justice, but for now she shall wait for the day to be taken back home, not alone but with others in strength.

She flinched when she turned to look to the side to see a tall man, he was beautiful. Awed at the sight of the strangely encapsulating man who was glowing entrancingly from the lights and the moon as well. Mostly his vision of his eyes from the mid ranged distance, she panicked once again when he caught her staring. Flustered in beyond her life had she met a man who made her feel so out of place. He was confused why she suddenly looked away, “Miss? Perhaps you are a traveler? Considering I have yet to see you before in this country? Have finished experiencing the festival in Liyue?” She froze, right the festival that is taking place right now. Was she dreading for so long to not realize the time?

One thing is for sure she was embarrassed herself once again, no way to correct the fact she had nothing to tell this man to answer that. “Perhaps you are asking for an introduction from a stranger like myself, but it does not seem fair if you do not return the favor first. In all honesty I did not partake in the event, I tend to busy myself too much in working around Liyue as an Adventurer from the guild. Well I don’t know how to experience these events. It’s best for me not to attend and perhaps ruin it all. Good night Sir.” She shouldn’t bother this man at all, leaving was the only thing on her mind.

Of course I am Zhongli of Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, a consultant, may I ask for the name of your Miss?” She stopped, “I would not mind if you were to show me the knowledge of yours of your beloved Liyue. I am Kay of Haru, please do not mind my hesitancy and not honor among me to be called anything as Miss. Kay is enough for me to be called in such a fluency.” Returning a feeble gaze up to him, taking him as her guide for that night to return alive that day.

Open to opportunities and refreshed and ready to work her life for another day to look for Mister Zhongli had inspired her to take on learning the world the best she can starting with Liyue. From the whole trip listening to him speak the loveliest tunes of a tone, enchanted possibly. Yet she began to notice how little time she spent on her commissions in which she decided to ask Katherine in a few hours for more things to do. In which she began to enjoy the thrill of control she realized of her life envirgated by the thought itself grew her confidence and growth in her skills. Passing 5 years had affected her bond with Mister Zhongli to increase in size on her personal affections to his personal side of feelings towards simple things in life. Someone who could answer her curiosities in the best way they could and confide, not once thought about leaving the country of Liyue.

It's chaos, confusion

Yet with few time he found her as often as he could in Liyue in finding her in returning to Katherine filing in the many commissions built as she carried on her shoulders. He gave her glaze lilies on her birthday each year, not sure how he knew, but perhaps the old woman told him. Cooking was one her specialties in which she began collecting recipes after trying to find a way to return back to Mister Zhongli to acknowledge his distaste in seafood as a reminder. Perhaps he was too addicting to let go, however was that alright to call him something close to a friend. Would that be alright with him?

You may feel no purpose

Yet she would miss him as much as she thought when Childe took on his arrival. Perhaps the fact alone that she took on now is the gnawing hunger, she was childish to share a desire of hers with him. Considering the truth, he always found her and never the other way around. She did not see him that much anymore, feeling like a distant memory that returns every week he does. Never once complained for the fact she enjoyed his company, for the returning fact, she was lonely.

And there may not be meaning

So find one and seize it

Do not waste your self on this roof

Perhaps for once a longing will not leave her and let her stay on the roof of her home given to her and the children of those who breathed in this village. The moon was always lucky to know it was never alone, possibilities of her insecurities to eat her. Was she not worthy to know the fact she is not considered in the spotlight, but entirely on being known? Still he gave her glaze lilies on her birthday.

Driven to bite back the petty thieves in Liyue with her strength reporting to the adventurer’s guild and stealing treasures and effort from others. She did not like them, she made sure to take note of base locations from each leader she fought, monsters she battled and planned meticulously in a clean beat down. Same old same old, spending Mora on things she could think of. To one she could tend to a bird; Kyu a loving bird with a blank expression but a silent affectionate one in the end of it all, who carries packages and wordless secrets of her loneliness. Perhaps her own feelings she can express is what tearing her apart over and over again. Life was hers to learn more of as her commissions made her wander to Monstadt’s region but never once thought about entering into the city of freedom.

She faced Childe in a confrontation when Mister Zhongli brought him over for dinner that week at her home. Why did it take a year for her to finally meet Childe, Mister Zhongli? She frowned, but bonded slowly with Childe, he was pretty sketchy around her, but nonetheless she wasn’t alone if Childe actually had something to confide with family. Considering they had similar visions from the same values of Justice but different archons blessed. He gave white lies with reason, sometimes it was cruel to keep to himself. While Kay herself was one who hesitates but nevertheless her strength is for the good reasons that are proven. Yet even the harder things get she won’t give in so easily she rather die fighting for things that are right, failing to do so does not mean she’ll stop. Mister Zhongli lowered his visits to her compared to Childe who was able to find him whenever he needed to talk to him. However another person, the traveler, arrived in Liyue a few weeks ago. However Mister Zhongli had briefly mentioned her if they needed any assistance. Not sure how to feel if he was using her, unsure if their bond would be truly mended and here she was letting him into her own heart every time he came. Why does she hesitate when it comes to him? Someone who could destroy all her defenses and weaken her to the point she doesn’t help but stutter. She’s not sure if Mister Zhongli realizes as she doesn’t entirely, she is hurting. She is selfish to continue this cycle she let herself eat till he leaves her. This is not entirely healthy, she’s disgusted to look how encapsulated when it comes to him. Perhaps it’s better to give up before it ruins her, she thought. She’s selfish to think he would see her again. Does this mean she’s drowning by the sea with no shores for her to rely on.

“Kay.” She stood by the cliffs and turned around to see Mister Zhongli with the Traveler. She is confused yet a bit sad by her own thoughts of self pity. “Mister Zhongli. It’s been too long hasn’t it?” The Traveler worriedly looked in between them. “Hello dear Traveler, I hope you’ve been well, I hope I did well to help you in Liyue.” She ignored the fact Zhongli was about to respond to her, but ended letting him continue since the Traveler nudged him to do so. “I apologize, if I left you too much in the dark. Perhaps we could mend for a few moments with a story to tell. I will confess the fact I was not honest in my reasons for disappearing too much.” Her eyes conflicted, whether or not he was truly speaking his mind, but knowing him for years regardless of his disappearance. She sighs, bitterly but allowing his invitation to tell about the salt goddess that late evening.

One thing she could even do was not judge him, but comfort him as a human like she was born to do. Sure she was angry, but nothing could compare over the immortal and emotional wounds that cut deeply over time and left a swollen temperament of a situation. She cannot help but relate once again leaving her fragile over the fact she wasn’t smart enough to understand him, but connect through the empathic nature she was. In the end she knew she'd join the Traveler to Inazuma to finish her parting justice for her country. Perhaps one day she’ll understand to feel more, if they joined them. Perhaps she’ll tell people in Liyue about her choice in following the Traveler.

How the most dangerous thing is to love

She loved this man to the end of her aging life, even if he would not take it for granted compared to her existence. After following her beloved traveler to the end of their journey, healing her country she must take over duties as next head with the revived honor of her clan. She realizes Mister Zhongli will wait for her, not the reason she wants to believe. In which she cannot return the sentiment that he plans to give back in the end. That is not the love she needed from him, nor can force it. For that she will settle for another, her children will remember the age or gods in her place. She will heal and forgive him over and over again. For she will love him to not feel forgotten for eternity. Perhaps he was right to compare her to glaze lilies on her birthdays.

Those Executed For Involvement In the Irish Easter Rising in 1916

Francis Sheehy-Skeffington (died age 37)

Sheehy-Skeffington tried to organise a citizen police force to stop looting on the Tuesday of the Rising. Heading home, he was arrested in for no reason by British troops. Capt JC Bowen-Colthurst used him as a hostage while attacking the shop of Alderman James Kelly, at the top of Camden Street. Bowen-Colthurst destroyed the shop with grenades, and shot dead a 17-year-old boy before marching Sheehy-Skeffington and two journalists to Portobello Barracks. The next morning, they unaware they were going to be shot to death until moments before it occurred. They were executed the next morning on April 26th, 1916. Those involved attempted to cover up what they did.

Thomas “Tom” Clarke (died age 58)

Clarke was stationed at headquarters in the General Post Office during the Easter Week. Clarke wrote on the wall of the house after surrender on April 29th, "We had to evacuate the GPO. The boys put up a grand fight, and that fight will save the soul of Ireland." He was arrested after the surrender. He and other rebels were taken to the Rotunda where he was stripped of his clothing in front of the other prisoners. He was later held in Kilmainham Gaol. He was court-martialled and sentenced to death. Before his execution, he asked his wife Kathleen to give this message to the Irish People:

"My comrades and I believe we have struck the first successful blow for freedom, and so sure as we are going out this morning so sure will freedom come as a direct result of our action . . . In this belief, we die happy."

He was then executed by firing squad on May 3rd, 1916.

Patrick Pearse (died age 36)

Easter Monday, April 24th 1916, it was Pearse who read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from outside the General Post Office, the headquarters of the Rising. Pearse was the person most responsible for drafting the Proclamation, and he was chosen as President of the Republic. Six days after he issued the order to surrender. He was court-martialled and executed by firing squad on may 3rd, 1916. He was said to be whistling as he came out of his cell to be killed. The day before his death he wrote:

"When I was a child of ten I went down on my bare knees by my bedside one night and promised God that I should devote my life to an effort to free my country. I have kept that promise. As a boy and as a man I have worked for Irish freedom. The time, as it seemed to me, did come, and we went into the fight. I am glad we did. We seem to have lost. We have not lost. To refuse to fight would have been to lose, to fight is to win. We have kept faith with the past and handed on a tradition to the future."

Thomas MacDonagh (died age 37)

MacDonagh's battalion was stationed at Jacob's Biscuit Factory. Despite MacDonagh's rank and the fact that he commanded one of the strongest battalions, they saw little fighting. MacDonagh received the order to surrender on April 30th, though his battalion was prepared to continue. Following the surrender, MacDonagh was court martialled, and executed by firing squad on May 3rd, 1916. In his last message to the Irish people he wrote:

"I, Thomas MacDonagh, having now heard the sentence of the Court Martial held on me today, declare that in all my acts, all the acts for which I have been arraigned. I have been actuated by one motive only, the love of my country, and the desire to make her a sovereign, independent state."

Joseph Mary Plunkett (died age 28)

Following the surrender Plunkett was held in Kilmainham Gaol, and faced court martial. Seven hours before his execution, he was married in the prison chapel to his sweetheart Grace Gifford, a Protestant convert to Catholicism, whose sister, Muriel, had years before also converted and married his best friend Thomas MacDonagh, who was also executed for his role in the Easter Rising. Grace never married again after his death on May 4th, 1816. Days before his sentence Plunkett had written in a letter to Grace:

"Listen--if I live it might be possible to get the Church to marry us by proxy- there is such a thing but it is very difficult I am told. Father Sherwin might be able to do it. You know how I love you. That is all I have time to say. I know you love me and I am very happy."

Edward “Ned” Daly (died age 25)

Daly's battalion, stationed in the Four Courts and areas to the west and north of the centre of Dublin, saw the most harsh fighting of the rising. He was forced to surrender his battalion on April 29th by Patrick Pearse. He was executed by firing squad on May 4th 1916. Men in his battalion spoke of him as a good leader.

Michael O’Hanrahan (died age 38)

O’Hanrahan was second in command of Dublin's 2nd battalion under Commandant Thomas MacDonagh. He fought at Jacob's Biscuit Factory, though the battalion saw little action other than intense sniping throughout Easter week. O'Hanrahan was executed by firing squad on May 4th 1916 at Kilmainham Jail. His brother, Henry O'Hanrahan, was sentenced to penal servitude for life for his role in the Easter Rising.

William “Willie” Pearse (died age 34)

Willie followed his brother into the Irish Volunteers and the Republican movement. He took part in the Easter Rising in 1916, always staying by his brother's side at the General Post Office. Following the surrender he was court-martialled and sentenced to be executed. It has been said that as he was only a minor player in the struggle it was his surname that condemned him. However, at his court martial he rather exaggerating his involvement. On May 3rd, William was granted permission to visit his brother in Kilmainham Gaol and to see him for the final time. While Willie was en route, Patrick was executed first and they never saw one another again. Willie was executed on May 4th, 1916.

John MacBride (died age 47)

In 1905 MacBride joined other Irish nationalists in preparing for an insurrection. Because he was so well known to the British, the leaders thought it wise to keep him outside their secret military group planning a Rising. He was in Dublin early on Easter Monday morning to meet his brother Dr. Anthony MacBride, who was arriving from Westport to be married on the Wednesday. The Major walked up Grafton St and saw Thomas MacDonagh in uniform and leading his troops. He offered his services and was appointed second-in-command at the Jacob's factory. After the Rising, MacBride, following a court martial under the Defence of the Realm Act, was shot by British troops in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin.

He was executed on May 5th 1916, two days before his forty-eighth birthday. Facing the British firing squad, he said he did not wish to be blindfolded, saying:

"I have looked down the muzzles of too many guns in the South African war to fear death and now please carry out your sentence."

He is buried in the cemetery at Arbour Hill Prison in Dublin.

Executed two days before his 54th birthday on May 5th.

Éamonn Ceannt (died age 34)

After the unconditional surrender of the 1916 fighters, Eamonn Ceannt was detained. While Ceannt was being picked for trial, volunteer James Couhlan remembers him being determined in looking after the welfare of “the humblest of those who had served under him”. Ceannt was tried under court martial as demanded by General Maxwell. May 2nd, Ceannt was sent to Kilmainham Gaol to face trial and execution.

Written a few hours before his execution from cell 88 in Kilmainham Gaol, he wrote:

“I leave for the guidance of other Irish Revolutionaries who may tread the path which I have trod this advice, never to treat with the enemy, never to surrender at his mercy, but to fight to a finish...Ireland has shown she is a nation. This generation can claim to have raised sons as brave as any that went before. And in the years to come Ireland will honour those who risked all for her honour at Easter 1916.”

Ceannt was held in Kilmainham Gaol until his execution by firing squad on May 8th 1916. He is buried at Arbour Hill.

Michael Mallin (died age 41)

When Connolly was inducted into the Irish Republican Brotherhood in January 1916. On Easter Monday Mallin departed from Liberty Hall at 11:30am to take up his post at St Stephen's Green with his small force of ICA men and women. Upon arriving at the park they evacuated it, dug trenches, erected kitchen and first aid stations, and constructed barricades in the surrounding streets. Mallin planned to occupy the Shelbourne Hotel, located on the north-east side of the park, but insufficient troops prevented him from doing so. The next morning under intense machine gun fire Mallin ordered his troops to retreat to the Royal College of Surgeons on the west side of the park. The garrison remained in the barricaded building for the remainder of the week.

Mallin surrendered on April 30th 1916. The garrison was taken first to Dublin Castle then to Richmond Barracks, where Mallin was separated for court-martial. At his court-martial he downplayed his involvement. In his statement, Mallin stated:

“I had no commission whatever in the Citizen Army. I was never taken into the confidence of James Connolly. I was under the impression that we were going out for manoeuvres on Sunday . . . Shortly after my arrival at St Stephen's Green the firing started and Countess Markievicz ordered me to take command of the men as I had been so long associated with them. I felt I could not leave them and from that time I joined the rebellion."

Mallin was found guilty and transported to Kilmainham Gaol for his execution. He was executed May 8th 1916. The night before his execution he was visited in his cell by his mother, three of his siblings, his pregnant wife and their four children. In his last letter to his wife, who was pregnant with their fifth child, Mallin said:

"I find no fault with the soldiers or the police [I ask you] to pray for all the souls who fell in this fight, Irish and English . . . so must Irishmen pay for trying to make Ireland a free nation."

He wrote to his children:

“Una my little one be a Nun Joseph my little man be a Priest if you can James & John to you the care of your mother make yourselves good strong men for her sake and remember Ireland”

His funeral mass took place at the Dominican Church in Tallaght on May 13th, 1917. People from the procession clashed with police outside the church with two policemen injured.

Con Colbert (died age 37)

In the weeks leading up to the Rising, he acted as bodyguard for Thomas Clarke. During Easter Week, he fought at Watkin's Brewery, Jameson's Distillery and Marrowbone Lane. They were marched to Richmond Barracks after surrender, where Colbert would later be court-martialled. Transferred to Kilmainham Gaol, he was told on Sunday May 7th he was to be shot the following morning. He wrote no fewer than ten letters during his time in prison. During this time in detention, he did not allow any visits from his family; writing to his sister, he said a visit "would grieve us both too much".

The night before his execution he sent for Mrs. Ó Murchadha who was also being held prisoner. He told her he was "proud to die for such a cause. I will be passing away at the dawning of the day." Holding his bible, he told her he was leaving it to his sister. He handed her three buttons from his volunteer uniform, telling her "They left me nothing else," before asking her when she heard the volleys of shots in the morning for Éamonn Ceannt, Michael Mallin and himself would she say a Hail Mary for the souls of the departed. The soldier who was guarding the prisoner began crying according to Mrs. Ó Murchadha, and recorded him saying "If only we could die such deaths."

Colbert was shot by firing squad the next morning on May 8th 1916.

Sean Heuston (died age 25)

Heuston was the Officer Commanding of the Volunteers in the Mendicity Institution on the south side of Dublin city. Heuston was to hold this position for three or four hours, to delay the advance of British troops. This delay was necessary to give the headquarters staff time to prepare their defences. Heuston was arrested after the surrender and transferred to Richmond Barracks. O May 4th 1916, he was tried by court martial. May 7th 1916, the verdict of the court martial was communicated to him that he had been sentenced to death and was to be shot at dawn the following morning.

Prior to his execution he was attended by Father Albert in his final hours. Father Albert wrote an account of those hours up to and including the execution:

“…We were now told to be ready. I had a small cross in my hand, and though blindfolded, Seán bent his head and kissed the Crucifix; this was the last thing his lips touched in life. He then whispered to me: ‘Father, sure you won’t forget to anoint me?’ I had told him in his cell that I would anoint him when he was shot. We now proceeded towards the yard where the execution was to take place; my left arm was linked in his right, while the British soldier who had handcuffed and blindfolded him walked on his left. As we walked slowly along we repeated most of the prayers that we had been saying in the cell. On our way we passed a group of soldiers; these I afterwards learned were awaiting Commandant Mallin; who was following us. Having reached a second yard I saw there another group of military armed with rifles. Some of these were standing, and some sitting or kneeling. A soldier directed Seán and myself to a corner of the yard, a short distance from the outer wall of the prison. Here there was a box (seemingly a soap box) and Sean was told to sit down upon it. He was perfectly calm, and said with me for the last time: ‘My Jesus, mercy.’ I scarcely had moved away a few yards when a volley went off, and this noble soldier of Irish Freedom fell dead. I rushed over to anoint him; his whole face seemed transformed and lit up with a grandeur and brightness that I had never before noticed.”

Father Albert concluded:

“Never did I realise that men could fight so bravely, and die so beautifully, and so fearlessly as did the Heroes of Easter Week. On the morning of Sean Heuston's death I would have given the world to have been in his place, he died in such a noble and sacred cause, and went forth to meet his Divine Saviour with such grand Christian sentiments of trust, confidence and love.”

Thomas Kent (died age 50)

During the Easter Rising, the Kent residence was raided in a gunfight lasted for four hours. Eventually the Kents were forced to surrender. Thomas and William was tried by court martial on the charge of armed rebellion. His brother was acquitted, but Thomas was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad in Cork on May 9th 1916. He was buried in the grounds of Cork Prison.

Sean Mac Diarmada (died age 33)

September 1915, he joined the secret Military Committee of the IRB. In 1914 he said:

"the Irish patriotic spirit will die forever unless a blood sacrifice is made in the next few years.”

Due to his disability, Mac Diarmada took little part in the fighting of Easter week, but was stationed at the headquarters in the General Post Office. Following the surrender, he nearly escaped execution by blending in with the large body of prisoners. He was eventually recognised by Daniel Hoey of G Division. Following a court-martial on May 9th, Mac Diarmada was executed by firing squad on May 12th. In his final letter he wrote:

"Miss Ryan, she who in all probability, had I lived, would have been my wife".

She and her sister, Phyllis also visited Kilmainham Gaol before his execution. Before his execution, Mac Diarmada wrote:

"I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!”

James Connolly (died age 47)

Connolly considered the rest of the leaders too bourgeois and unconcerned with Ireland's economic independence. During the Easter Rising, Connolly was Commandant of the Dublin Brigade and was de facto commander-in-chief. Following the surrender, he said to other prisoners:

"Don't worry. Those of us that signed the proclamation will be shot. But the rest of you will be set free."

Connolly was not held in gaol, but in a room at the State Apartments in Dublin Castle, which had been converted to a first-aid station for troops recovering from the war. Connolly was sentenced to death by firing squad for his part in the rising. On May 12th 1916 he was taken by military ambulance to Royal Hospital Kilmainham, across the road from Kilmainham Gaol, and from there taken to the gaol, where he was to be executed. Visited by his wife, and asking about public opinion, he commented:

"They will all forget that I am; an Irishman."

Connolly had been so badly injured from the fighting but the execution order was still given and he was unable to stand before the firing squad; he was carried to a prison courtyard on a stretcher. His absolution and last rites were administered by a Capuchin, Father Aloysius Travers. Asked to pray for the soldiers about to shoot him, he said:

"I will say a prayer for all men who do their duty according to their lights."

Instead of being marched to the same spot where the others had been executed, at the far end of the execution yard, he was tied to a chair and then shot. His body (with other leaders) was put in a mass grave without a coffin. The executions of the rebel leaders deeply angered the majority of the Irish population, most of whom had shown no support during the rebellion.

Sir Roger Casement (died age 51)

October 1914, Casement sailed for Germany via Norway. Casement spent most of his time in Germany seeking to recruit an Irish Brigade from among more than 2,000 Irish prisoners-of-war taken in the early months of the war and held in the prison camp of Limburg an der Lahn. His plan was that they would be trained to fight against Britain in the cause of Irish independence. Casement did not learn about the Easter Rising until after the plan was fully developed. The German weapons never landed in Ireland; the Royal Navy intercepted the ship transporting them.

Casement departed Germany in a submarine. In the early hours of April 21st 1916, three days before the rising began, the German submarine put Casement ashore. Suffering from a recurrence of the malaria, and too weak to travel, he was discovered at McKenna's Fort and arrested on charges of treason, sabotage and espionage against the Crown.

"He was taken to Brixton Prison to be placed under special observation for fear of an attempt of suicide. There was no staff at the Tower [of London] to guard suicidal cases."

At Casement's highly publicised trial for treason, the prosecution had trouble arguing its case. Casement's crimes had been carried out in Germany. During the trial, Casement’s personal diary detailed his homosexual encounters was uncovered. The British government circulated fake reports to portray Casement as a sexual deviant. Casement tried to appeal the violation of his human rights and against his conviction and death sentence. On the day of his execution, Casement was received into the Catholic Church at his request. He was attended by two Catholic priests. One said of Casement that he was:

"a saint… we should be praying to him [Casement] instead of for him".

Casement was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London on August 3rd 1916. His last word was “Ireland”.

Understanding the Masters of Sex Timeline

As much as I love Masters of Sex, the timeline of the show has really bothered me, which is unfortunate, because I am a stickler for timelines within TV shows. It has become somewhat of an obsession. Masters of Sex has, on the surface, one of the most confusing timelines in the history of TV.

For those wondering what the full timeline of Masters of Sex looks like (or what the fairest assessment of the Masters of Sex taking into account how long characters say it’s been since the last episode, events going on around the time, and when title cards reveal the date or the date is just plainly given), I have attempted to clarify the Masters of Sex timeline.

(And I do give credit to @examroom5 for their original timeline post and their take on the timeline, which was the inspiration for this post and was very helpful).

This gets long, so click after the bump if you dare…

SEASON 1: 1956 - 1957

101 - Pilot: The date is specifically revealed to be October 1956. The events of this episode apparently span a month or two, however, so I would say October 1956 - January 1957.

102 - Race to Space: Begins the Monday after the pilot ended, so it must still be January 1957.

103 - Standard Deviation: Title card reveals it to be February 1957.

104 - Thank You for Coming: This is when the timeline of the show begins to lose all credibility. Libby is five months pregnant, so if she was conceived in February, that would date the episode to July 1957. However, taking into account what goes on later in the season, we’re going to just assume that this episode is set about a month later and that 103 just took place in EARLY February and that everyone’s lying about how pregnant Libby is and Libby looks more pregnant than she actually is. So, March 1957 it is.

The other way you could look at this is that episodes 101 - 103 all took place in October 1956, so Libby could be four months pregnant in February/March 1957 and the rest of the season one timeline would make sense.

105 - Catherine: Ethan claims that Libby is 24 weeks pregnant at this point, but Ethan Haas has proven himself to be a pathological liar in early season one, so there’s a good chance he lied about that too. (Yeah, it’s a big stretch. What I’m trying to say is that there’s no way Libby is 24 weeks pregnant). It’s still March 1957.

106 - Brave New World: About a week or two after the miscarriage. Still March 1957.

107 - All Together Now: No real explanation given as to how long after 106 this takes place, so let’s just assume a day or two. March 1957.

108 - Love and Marriage: Austin’s wife says it’s March, so, finally it makes sense that the last five episodes would take place within March. But the real reason the last five episode would’ve taken place in March is because Libby is pregnant in this episode, and the proper time must be given for a full pregnancy. Also, in 110, Austin being paired with a girl in the study was referred to as being in March, so it appears that they did think out the timeline after all. How strange. March 1957.

109 - Involuntary: No real date given as to how long after 108 this takes place, but considering their break up still seems fresh in 110, it must have not taken long before that, so I’d say May 1957.

110 - Fallout: Flora Banks was partnered with Austin when Austin wanted back in the study in 108, which was said to be March “three months ago”. We’re in June 1957 now.

111 - Phallic Victories: It apparently takes place the same month as 112, so we’re going to say October 1957. (Logic in next explanation).

112 - Manhigh: In 207, it’s October 1958, and it’s Johnny’s one year birthday, so Johnny was born in October 1957. Yeah, the whole Manhigh thing was August 1957, and I think the writers intended that to be the case because they refer to the study being on the 19th and Manhigh was on August 19th, but for the purposes of this episode, it was the 19th of October 1957. Also, if Libby’s conception was in March, a birth in October would be more believable than one in August. If you want to get really specific, October 19 - 20, 1957.

SEASON 2: 1957 - 1961

201 - Parallax: The script for this episode claimed the main action of this episode was set three weeks after 112. And, okay, but considering how much goes on this episode, it would make sense if it takes place over a few months, and it also makes sense taking into account that Bill worked at Memorial for only a month. That would set us to November 1957 - February 1958.

202 - Kyrie Eleison: Apparently it takes place the day after Parallax ended, so we must be in February 1958.

203 - Fight: The actual boxing match was set in December 1958, but considering 207 begins in October 1958, there’s no way that’s happening. And considering the date of the Manhigh expedition was changed, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this one was changed by the matter of months too. We should be in February/March 1958.

204 - Dirty Jobs: Masters was said in 206 to have worked at Memorial a month, so that would mean we’re now in March 1958, and let’s assume there’s about a few week time jump between when he interviews at Buell Green’s.

205 - Giants: At this point, we should be in April 1958, not long after 204.

206 - Blackbird: Set five months before 207, which began in October 1958, so we’re definitely in May 1958 now.

207 - Asterion: Dates are specifically revealed in this episode, god bless them. October 15, 1958. September 2, 1959. October 11, 1960.

208 - Mirror, Mirror: Still October 1960.

209 - Story of My Life: Still October 1960.

210 - Below the Belt: Still October 1960.

211 - One for the Money, Two for the Show: Martin Luther King was arrested in Atlanta on October 19th, so that would mean this episode is set on October 20th, but there’s no way only nine days have elapsed between 207 and this episode. We’re definitely in October 1960 (the clapboard proved it), but we’re probably later in October. Around the 30th or so. (Clark Gable’s heart attack was in November, but it supposedly is still around the 1960 debates, so I’ll let that slide…)

212 - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: The whole episode is set in the week of JFKs inauguration, so it’s January 17ish - 20, 1961.

SEASON 3: 1965 - 1968

301 - Parliament of Owls: The press conference is October 1965, and the Summer vacation should be in June 1965.

302 - Three’s a Crowd: The episode begins where we left off in October 1965. Then the next time jump (the first meeting with the Shah) is set on November 12, 1965 (”the second Friday of next month”). Then for the rest of the episode, it should take place in early 1966, with the book being released in April 1966.

303 - The Excitement of Release: Apparently it’s eight weeks after 302, so it should be June, but Bill makes a jab that hell isn’t worse than St Louis in August, so it could be August? School is open in parts of the US in August, so it would make sense with Tessa going to the homecoming dance. Let’s just settle on July 1966.

304 - Undue Influence: 303 and 305 take place within a span of two weeks, so 304 is sandwiched in the middle. It should still be July/August 1966.

305 - Matters of Gravity: Two weeks after 303. They should be in August 1966 at this point.

306 - Two Scents: “A few weeks” after 305. Definitely August/September 1966.

307 - Monkey Business: THIS episode is where things get hectic. Now, Helen’s conception in 308 must be nine months before 406, which is set in the Summer of 1969 (so she must have been impregnated in September 1968). And since 306 left off in 1966, we’re in a bit of a predicament, we must get from Sept 1966 to Sept 1968. The good thing, though, is that there isn’t any mention of how long after 306 this episode takes place, and now mention in 308 on how long after this episode that one takes place. And considering a lot of people dislike this episode anyway, let’s just slap on another reason to dislike this episode. Sometime between September 1966 and September 1968 (but the events of 306 seem to be a little more fresh in this episode so closer to 1966 than 1968).

308 - Surrogates: As I said, nine months before Helen’s birth in Summer 1969, so we’re in September 1968.

309 - High Anxiety: Two months after 308, so we’re in November 1968. However, Joy’s tombstone does say she died in 1966 when she was still alive in episode 308, but let’s just assume Paul got into some Larry David-esque altercation with the tombstone engraver.

310 - Through a Glass, Darkly: Tessa’s boyfriend claims that they were dating for five months since they started dating (in 303), but that must be another lie. It should still be in November 1968.

311 - Party of Four: This episode is two weeks after 310. Late November 1968.

312 - Full Ten Count: The prop store had Virginia’s arrest records, and the date on it was December 3, 1966. The date on the letter Jane reads from the prop store was dated December 2, 1966, so they intended this episode to be set on December 3rd. This does work. The year, on the other hand… so it would not be unreasonable to say this episode was set on December 3, 1968.

SEASON 4: 1968 - 1969

401 - Freefall: 3 to 4 weeks since the end of Season 3. The episode begins in late December 1968 and goes into January 1969, so technically the season DID begin in 1968. The only part of this season that doesn’t make sense was the whole “90 sessions in 90 days” thing. For that we’re going to suspend belief and say Bill went to 90 meetings between January and July. (Or act as if they mean 90 non-consecutive days, which is entirely possible).

402 - Inventory: Within a week of 401. Also, Louise mentions it’s Winter, so it would make sense still being January 1969.

403 - The Pleasure Protocol: From 403 to 409, there’s a clear amount of time between each episode, so I had to work backwards from 409 (which is definitely set on August 14, 1969). Luckily, I was even able to narrow down the week for this one. This one took place around July 5 - 8, 1969. That would mean there was about a five-month time jump between 402 and 403, which is pretty plausible considering Virginia’s change in hair and there’s no indication how long after 402 this episode took place, other than it being Libby’s first day of work at Herb Spleeb.

404 - Coats or Keys: A week after 403. Should be around July 13 - 14, 1969.

405 - Outliers: Less than a week separates 404 and 405, as 404 is referred to as “the other night” multiple times. It should only be a few days later, around July 16 - 18, 1969.

406 - Family Only: “The book was dead a week ago”. So a week, maybe a little less than a week after 405. Should be around July 22 - 23, 1969.

407 - In To Me You See: 13 days after the end of 406, so at this point, around August 5 - 6, 1969.

408 - Topeka: Doesn’t say exactly, but it should be a little less than a week after 407. 408 ends the day before 409 begins, so we can safely say this episode is set August 10 - 12, 1969.

409 - Night and Day: Art’s tape reel (and the Woodstock stuff) confirms this episode was definitely set August 13 - 15, 1969.

410 - The Eyes of God: It’s about or a little less than a week after 409. Should be around August 22 - 23, 1969.

A quick lesson on who Fall Out Boy is. And by “quick” I mean 1.5k words.

Fall Out Boy is a rock band from Chicago, Illinois.

The name “Fall Out Boy” started when they were a small, unnamed band. Someone in the crowd screamed “Fall Out Boy” in relation to Fallout Boy, the superhero, from The Simpsons.

The band started off in 2001 and started off without Andy on their first two EPs, but rather a guy named Ben Rose. Ben rose quickly quit and was replaced with Mike Pareskuwicz, who worked with Patrick, Joe and Pete. This graph is better at explaining it than I. Joe and Patrick met in a small book store in ‘01.

Fall Out Boy consists of four members.

Peter “Pete” Lewis Kingston Wentz III, Age 38. Born June 5, 1979. Fall Out Boy’s lyricist, back up vocals, and bassist. Has two kids, Bronx Mowgli Wentz and Saint Lazslo Wentz. Bronx’s mother is Ashlee Simpson, ex-wife of Pete. Ashlee and Pete were married for four years, from 2008 to 2011. Saint’s mother is Pete’s current girlfriend, Meagan Camper.

Andrew “Andy” John Hurley, age 37. Born May 31, 1980. Fall Out Boy’s drummer. Andy has no kids, but does have a girlfriend, Meredith Allen. This is her Instagram. Andy’s been vegan since he was young, along with being straightedge. His father passed when very, very young.

Patrick Martin Stumph, known as Patrick Vaughn Stump in media, age 33. Born April 27th 1984. Fall Out Boy’s lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Patrick has two kids. Patrick came out with the child’s first name only, which is Declan. The second kid has been confirmed in this interview but we do not know the name. Let’s keep it that way. Patrick married his current wife, Elisa Yao, in 2012.

Joseph “Joe” Mark Trohman, age 33. Born September 1, 1984. Fall Out Boy’s lyricist, back up vocals and main guitar. Joe has a daughter, named Ruby Trohman. He has a second one on the way, confirmed on this post by his wife. Joe has been married to his Wife, Marie Goble, since 2011.

In 2002, Fall Out Boy released a 6 song EP with Project Rocket, called split ep. Project Rocket had Andy on their drums.

In 2003, Fall Out Boy released their own 9 song EP called Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, which included some raw versions of songs that were included on their next album

In 2005, Fall Out Boy released a 13 song album called From Under The Cork Tree. This album included the singles Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down, A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More “Touch Me” and Dance, Dance. In 2006, Fall Out Boy released a limited edition “Black Clouds and Underdogs” version of From Under The Cork Tree. This version of the album gave 5 more tracks to the original.

In 2007, Fall Out Boy released a 14 song album called Infinity On High. This album included the singles This Ain’t A Scene, It’s Arms Race, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, The Take Over, The Breaks Over, I’m Like A Lawyer With The Way I’m Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You) and Carpal Tunnel Of Love. This Ain’t A Scene and Thnks Fr Th Mmrs became their hit singles of Infinity On High. A deluxe edition include two unreleased songs and three live versions of songs on their albums. In 2008, Fall Out Boy released a 13 song called Folie à Deux. This album included the singles America’s Suitehearts, What A Catch, Donnie, I Don’t Care, and Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet. In 2009, Fall Out Boy released a “Greatest Hits” album called Believers Never Die. This album consisted of their singles from previous albums, and a song called Alpha Dog. You can listen to Believers Never Die here.

Late 2009, Fall Out Boy called off a break, ending the end of an era on October 4th, 2009.

During their break, each member pursued a project outside of the band.

Joe and Andy made a band called The Damned Things, releasing its debut album Ironiclast in 2010. You can listen to Ironclast through Spotify with this link. Joe played lead guitar and backing vocals while Andy played drums.

Pete teamed up with Bebe Rexha to make the band Black Cards in 2010. Pete wrote lyrics and played bad while Bebe sang. You can listen to some of their stuff on Spotify using this link.

Patrick pursued his own solo career. Patrick released Truant Wave, a 6 song EP, in early 2011. In late 2011, Patrick released his own 11 song album called Soul Punk. Unlike the others, Patrick had no other members and produced the album by himself. A deluxe version of the album was released, including 5 more songs. Patrick and Pete met up in 2012 and started writing songs again. This resulted in the whole band coming together again, under fans, medias and critics noses and making a new album.

In 2013, Fall Out boy made a comeback with an 11 track album named Save Rock And Roll. This album included the singles My Songs Know What You did In The Dark (Light ‘Em Up), The Phoenix, Young Volcanoes and Alone Together. The band didn’t intend to make a short series, but were deeply inspired by the video for My Song Know What You Did In The Dark (Light ‘Em Up) that they made an 11 part short film called the Youngblood Chronicles. Every song off of Save Rock And Roll has a corresponding video, which all told a story. In late 2013, Fall Out Boy released another EP called PAX AM Days. This EP has 8 songs that are demos, under 2 minutes for every song but one. You can listen to PAX AM Days here.

In early 2015, Fall Out Boy released an 11 track album called American Beauty/ American Psycho. The singles from this album were Centuries, American Beauty/American Psycho, Uma Thurman and Irresistable. The song Irresistible came with three videos for the song. The official song’s version is this video, but Demi Lovato added her vocals to the song and this was the first video for the song with Demi. Later, another video came out with Demi in the video, and this is the video. You can listen to American Beauty/American Psycho here.

In early 2017, Pete announced that something was coming April 28th. It was moved to the day prior, which was Patrick’s 33rd birthday. They released the album’s release date, a tour and the first song off of the new album M A N I A. The spacing for title of the album goes one space, two spaces, three spaces, four spaces. M A N I A can also be written as M A N I A. The first single off of the album was Young And Menace, the next song Champion being released a few months later. They released two videos for the video, but this is the official version, while this is just a visualizer. At this time, M A N I A was set to release September 15th but was postponed on August 3rd by the lead singer in an announcement. They scraped the rest of the album and started brand new. They released The Last Of the Real Ones after the push back, and then released HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T. M A N I A is to be out January 19th, 2018.

Mariners 2020 Season - Post 1

Yes, the shortened 60 game season is half over. And yes, our beloved M’s are 11-19 with little chance of making the playoffs this year even with the expanded playoff format. And yes, folk hero for half of 2019 Daniel Vogelbach was just shipped off to the Toronto Buffalo Blue Jays for cash.

But I’ve missed the write-ups and reflections I did at the beginning of last season. Here’s one for yesterday afternoon’s 4-1 win over the Rangers.

Saturday’s 10-1 victory over the Rangers would have been more exciting to write about - Justice Sheffield’s 3rd straight dominant start, Kyle Lewis with 3 hits and 2 walks, Evan White busting out of a slump with 6 RBI’s, my favourite moment of the game when Shed Long hit a late game RBI ground rule double and celebrated with lifted hands as that ended a dark hitless streak. On his birthday! Stay strong, Shed!

But it was fitting that my first writeup was for Sunday’s game.

My phone pinged a phantom reminder that my wife and I had tickets to the game. Tickets probably bought in February for the scheduled game against the White Sox that won’t be played. Instead, Sunday’s game was game 3 of a series against the Texas Rangers and the stands are full of cardboard cutout fans.

(I thought about buying cardboard Sammy a season ticket subscription. 30 games for $30, $1 per game. That’s a good deal. But I’m trying to watch spending, and spent the $30 on a rad original print a friend of my created recently. I don’t regret the decision. Or I only do when Kyle Lewis crushes a home run that is caught by someone else’s cutout sitting next to the cutout of another person’s dog and the human and canine strangers now seatmates and friends look like their having the time of their lives as they were just hit by physical evidence that the rebuild is working.)

Justin Dunn started for the Mariners. He needed a strong start. He’s been hit hard lately. Mostly figuratively, but also a line drive to the ribs in his last (understandably abbreviated) start. He was great on Sunday! I don’t know which is more impressive, him holding the Rangers hitless through the first 4 innings, or his composure in handling the Rangers’ threats with men in scoring position in the 5th and 6th inning. In his 6 innings of work he gave up 1 hit, 1 walk, and had 6 strikeouts (a career high). A great outing!

Kyle Lewis was slacking and only had 1 hit on Sunday. He kept his 8 game hit streak alive with a home run in the 1st inning, putting the Mariners on the board 1-0 and giving them a lead they would not relinquish.

Austin Nola added a solo home run in the 2nd inning.

By the time Sam Haggerty crushed his first major league home run in the 5th inning, a 2 run shot giving the Mariners a 4-0 lead, it was clear the Rangers just wanted to pack their bags and get out of Seattle. Which is convenient, as the Mariners’ bats decided to get an early start to Monday’s off day. This is 99% of the time a recipe for trouble. The Mariners rarely have laurels to rest on, and when they do, said laurels are the opposite of bullpen implosion proof.

We’ve seen it happen. Often. Too often.

Anthony Misiewicz relieves Justin Dunn and takes the mound for the Mariners in the 7th inning. He takes care of business, thanks to a great sliding catch by Sam Haggerty on the 2nd out.

Dan Altivilla pitches the 8th inning for the M’s. Let’s ignore the home run he gave up to Jeff Mathis. (The much maligned bullpen did solid work tonight, keeping the lead and only giving up the 1 run.) Let’s focus instead on how Evan White is routinely making non-routine defensive plays look well, easy, routine. He’s a future Gold Glover for sure, but that’s understating it.

Taylor Williams comes in to pitch the 9th inning and, after giving up a leadoff single, Williams gets his 6th Save (of the Mariners’ 11 Wins).

My boy Shed didn’t get a hit. Probably saving them up for the 3 game series in too hot San Diego against the too hot Padres.

But the Mariners have Kyle Lewis.

They have their ace Marco Gonzales pitching the 1st game of the series.

And they are coming off a sweep (A SWEEP!!) of the Rangers, the Mariners’ first sweep of the season.

The Padres series will be interesting. Tatis Jr. is crazy good, but more than that, the Padres are rebuilding too. Or have rebuilt. May be a season further along the line in that process than the Mariners. I’m hoping the Mariners walk away from Sand Diego with another series win, but if not, it’ll be a good glimpse at what could be the future for the Mariners next season.

Rebuilds are tough. And they are patience straining. But as the cradboard cutouts that have been brutalized by Kyle Lewis home runs can attest to, some times they work.

In Episode 701 ‘’Murdoch Ahoy’’, a new passenger liner bound for Rochester is about to set sail, and Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) and Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) are called aboard by the owner, who is concerned about threats. When Murdoch spots Ogden (Hélène Joy) amongst the guests, he suggests they stay and monitor the situation. This episode was filmed aboard the S.S. Keewatin, the only remaining Edwardian passenger steamship in the world, which is now moored in Port McNicoll, Ontario. Built five years before the RMS Titanic, the S.S. Keewatin utilizes similar machinery including a quadruple expansion steam engine and Scotch boilers.

When Ogden (Hélène Joy) is trapped by the intense fire, Murdoch braves the flames to rescue his wife. On April 19th, 104, Toronto’s business district was consumed in flames in what is known as The Great Fire of 1904. While no lives were lost in the fire, the cause of which was never determined, more than 250 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Over 100 buildings were destroyed and 20 acres of the city levelled.

Description

In Episode 1008, ‘’Weekend at Murdoch’s’’, after two witnesses in a murder trial are killed while birdwatching, Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) and Crabtree (Jonny Harris) must protect the third witness. Much to Crabtree’s dismay, the witness is Roger Newsome (Cyrus Lane), the obnoxious playboy who flustered him during previous investigations into crimes at his automobile, golf and puzzle-solving clubs. Unfortunately, Newsome fails to grasp the risk to his life and when he sneaks out and is shot and killed by a sniper, Murdoch devises an outlandish ploy to keep the case alive and smoke out the killer by faking Newsome’s survival.

This is a wedding that I have been looking forward to for a very long time…long before these two were engaged. You see, Chad and Danielle are not family by blood, not by marriage, they are however still family. My mom and Danielle’s mom, LouAnn have been friends since our brothers were little and played baseball together. I am talking elementary school and before. My mom is an only child and when my grandmother, Minnie passed away, LouAnn and her sister Sandi became a close and amazing confidants for my mom, taking us under her wing and caring for us the way that only family does. She has been there every step of the way. We spend Halloween night together eating LouAnn’s delicious, homemade Italian wedding soup, we spend Christmas Eve with their family with an amazing spread at Sandi’s home and giving and receiving of gifts. We spend lots of days in their company and were blessed when my youngest and last child was born on LouAnn’s birthday, leaving her to be my son’s birthday twin and a bond that can never be broken.

I remember the first time I met Chad, I, like any other family member, had to put my feelers out and see what I actually thought about him…to say that these two are perfect for each other is an understatement. They are beyond compatible and their daughter, Mya could not be a more perfect mix of the two of them, she looks just like Chad in every way with her Momma’s Italian personality, she’s gorgeous and spunky and I just love her to pieces.

Once engaged, we scheduled their engagement portrait session, these two are funny when it comes to pictures, whether it be like a family member who doesn’t want to put you out or they are truly that laid back about them, I may never know. My suggestion was all in the City of Pittsburgh, that is where they met, fell in love, used to live, had their daughter…it was beginning of many first for them as a couple. We started at the West End Overlook, hands down my favorite view of the city, wide and expansive and on a nice clear day you can see passed the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland. Then we headed downtown near The Point, which is close to where they lived and ended our session at The Point with sunset. At the end of the night as darkness had fallen upon us we talked about the details they had recently accomplished, they asked me to please come and enjoy myself(to the wedding)…I reminded them that I would be! The best weddings for me are the ones that I am photographing…I truly love and adore what I do, I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself at a wedding that I was “just a guest”. I mean really, what do you do in between ceremony and reception? I am bride and limo chasing, I don’t know what you are doing haha. We talked about Danielle’s sister in law, Stephanie as we had been since we started, as she was STILL in labor with her second child! We knew the baby was a boy and I asked if Dean was going to be the ring bearer and obviously Mya, their little girl would be the flower girl and that’s when Danielle asked me for Gabe to be a ring bearer as well… Not even kidding, I may have teared up, said yes and spent the next 11 months dreaming of how handsome my sweet boy would be, hoping that the tux we purchased would still fit come August 12 and praying that my rambunctious 3 year old would please, please, please not throw a fit and wreck Danielle and Chad’s wedding day.

With the wedding day fast approaching and all the preparations complete, we are here….the morning that Chad and Danielle will become man and wife…I. WAS. TERRIFIED! Her ceremony was scheduled for 5PM and Gabe begins to melt at 3PM, he needs naps but has been refusing them like that was his job. I have a few things to recommend for parents of the flower girl/ ring bearers in and around the ages of infant – 5 years old. A backpack! We happen to have one that we sell that says “Ring bearer” on it, but any old bag will do. I stocked that thing full of goodies. I packed snacks, drinks, candy (just in case it got really ugly) and activities as well as what I like to call, the reward system. My daughter was no a reward kinda kid, she didn’t care that you had a lollipop waiting for her if she went potty or behaved well in church, my son however will do just about anything for a Matchbox Car. I had a series of 8 cars that he would receive for each thing that he did. He walked down the aisle, enter 1969 Corvette Matchbox car….he stood still and smiled for pictures, enter 1970 Camero Matchbox car and so on and so forth. Even I the reward giver could not believe this childs behavior.

Some of my favorite weddings have all events in one location, it makes it so easy for guests and as well as myself during the preceremony coverage. When scheduling weddings, we typically get coverage of the groom and his groomsmen at the church, having all events at one location allows us to easily go back and forth between Bride and groom at capture all the those special moments. Danielle got ready on the 15th “penthouse” floor while Chad got ready on the 3rd floor.

From the moment we walked in, it was like a dream, my kids were well behaved and Danielle was the portrait of beauty. Her dress is AMAZING, Her jewelry was perfect and those Valentino shoes!

We sent the girls to get their dresses on and proceeded to take photos of the “details”. It was now time to deliver the gifts to Chad, Dave(Danielle’s Dad), Matt and Brian(Danielle’s brothers). It warmed my heart to see Mya all dressed up in her little flower girl robe and handing out those precious treasures. We returned to Danielle’s room and got her dressed. Knowing this family as well as I do, if they cried, I cried, if they laughed, I laughed. I adore each and every one of them and today was going to be amazing and flawless and perfect.

Watching Danielle walk down the winding path to the ceremony was surreal, I have known Danielle since she was a little girl, taken her senior portraits and here I was, on this day, capturing one of the biggest moments of her life. I have watched her grow into a successful, gorgeous woman and mother, now wife.

We did outdoor photos of the bridal party and bride and groom in the courtyard at the Marriott, no need to fuss with traveling, we were on a strict timeline. But we were able to capture so many beautiful moments along the way, from trying to get Brian to jump, to a dance line, to my crazy directions…”OK, stand as close to the fire as possible without torching your dress” to “wait, wait, wait, the reflection is perfect”.

Upon entering the reception, I always like to get photos of the room before as I like to say “Anyone messes it up”. Everything was beautiful. The STUNNING ice sculpture was breathtaking and each and every decoration was well thought out and planned. It was Danielle, it was Chad, it was perfectly them, together.

This brings me to the first dance, Danielle and Chad started together and ended as a family with Mya joining in, the irony is not lost on me. They all held each other close, enjoyed and soaked in the moment. Danielle and her Dad, Dave shared in the father daughter dance as well as Chad and his Mom, Wilma, neither would be complete without that sweet little lady, their daughter, their granddaughter, Mya.

Let the fun begin! Dancing the night away was a blast for everyone, group pictures of every guest, dance battle of guys versus girls, dance line, special dances for Jackie and her new husband, little girls and big girls alike twirling the night away, Lou and Dave, Danielle and Chad, Stephanie and Brian, Wilma and Jim and my dear parents and many others…all joined in for the Anniversary Dance…which Wilma and Jim won!

With a certain little ring bearer getting pretty sleepy, we ended the night with a photo session outside where we congratulated “my family members”, hugged and wished them well, which happens at every wedding…but this time it was different. This isn’t a couple that I will keep up with on Social Media or when they come in for their next newborn session, this is a couple that I love, care for and will see very soon. I will know that they are not just OK, I will know that they are happy and in love and that they have found that person to which their soul loves. I truly do not have a “favorite moment of the day”, they are all my favorites, many of which include my little man. Watching Danielle walk down the aisle, seeing LouAnn’s face as she turned to Chad, their first kiss, the moment that Mya gave me her “big cheese” at the altar, seeing my little man enter the reception, watching Jeff give his best man speech, watching Danielle during the Maid of Honor Speech, the first dance, the parent dances, the anniversary dance, the dance line, the end of the night kiss. Each moment of EVERY wedding fills me with joy, in a world such as ours is now, I HAVE to believe in weddings. I have the believe in marrying the love of your life, the joy in families, the eternal happiness that one feels being with your soul mate, the one that God designed for you and you alone. I have to believe in the fairytale. I love weddings, each and every one.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to be in Louiedom without forming an opinion on “babygate”.

My opinion is basically this- I really don’t like the way people talk about Briana. I don’t like that people say cruel things and treat her as a prop, rather than a real person. I also think she is the mother of Freddie- as my father once charmingly put it, “Women have babies and men have maybes.” It’s substantially harder to fake maternity than paternity. I don’t think the pregnancy was faked.

But really, on the subject of paternity, there are only three possibilities. A) Both Louis and Briana know there’s no way he’s the father, B) Both Louis and Briana have reason to think he might be the father, C) Briana knows he’s the father and Louis knows there’s a possibility he might be the father. But during 2015, when the weirdest press that convinced everyone it was a stunt was coming out, there was no way to objectively confirm paternity, if there was any doubt. While CVS and amniocentesis can technically be used for that purpose, they almost never are because they’re invasive procedures that carry a small risk of miscarriage, and Briana would be entirely within her rights to refuse any request she submit to such a procedure. So everything was based off her word- I strongly suspect she was the ‘instigator’ of babygate, and the weird press was 1DHQ trying to get out ahead of her.

But the thing that struck me was, regardless of paternity and regardless of which of the three scenarios above was true, Briana has a rational reason to claim Louis is the father, 1DHQ has strong business motivations to go along with her claim, and Louis would experience strong pressure on both a business and personal level to go along with stories that he seemed really uncomfortable about.

Freddie’s birthday means he was conceived sometime between the last week of April and the first week of May, basically. Briana had publicly available photographic proof she was clubbing with Louis and getting cuddly with him three dates within that time frame (5/5, 5/7, 5/9). With a positive pregnancy test, she had leverage to name Louis as the father and potentially sell the story. It could’ve become a drawn out he said-she said if they chose to fight it. But when would she have found out she was pregnant?

I was really curious how the “It’s not real” incident lined up with the conception date. Too early and it would be before either he or Briana could’ve known she was pregnant. But the date (6/27) is just past the 7 weeks mark for fetal age (or 9 weeks if you go by LMP)- pretty much the earliest she could’ve possibly known she was pregnant. So was he making a joke about the doll, or was he thinking about Briana, maybe suspecting she was faking a pregnancy or that it wasn’t his? It’s also interesting to me that Liam joins in with him. He was actually out clubbing with Louis and Briana and the rest of their crew on 5/7, one of the potential conception dates, and shortly after, on 5/11.

The pregnancy is publicly announced on 7/14. People have commented that announcing in the 1st trimester is pretty brazen, and almost totally unheard of in celebrity cases. But Briana isn’t actually a celebrity. She’s an unknown stylist from a normal middle class family in LA. She wants to avoid being pushed under a rug, and she wants attention to promote her career. I am a little curious if she knew the hiatus was coming- she was clubbing with both Louis and Liam and their crew, and while I think a lot of the details were still being fought over (ie, whether or not to tour MITAM) the writing was on the wall by that point in 2015. Did she know she had less than a year of 1D press to try and raise her career profile?

Regardless of the above wild speculation, I don’t know any 23 year old who’s never had a miscarriage before who thinks “I should probably be discreet about this until the 2nd trimester, just in case.” I think it’s reasonable to assume she thought “Oh fuck, I’m going to have a baby, what should I do?” And naming Louis as the father clearly makes sense. Either she knows for a fact he’s the father, in which case her motivations are obvious, she suspects he may be the father, in which case he’s the best to name because he’s clearly the guy who’d best be able to provide her and her child with financial stability, at least through the pregnancy, or she knows he’s not the father but maybe hoped they’d pay her to keep quiet.

Which then brings up the very good question- why didn’t they pay her to keep quiet? Or, alternatively, why didn’t she take the money? I think timing, and the hiatus, is key here. The whole ‘babygate’ thing was unfolding all of three months out from Zayn leaving the band, and a year after “the weed video”. They knew the hiatus was upcoming at the end, though again, who knows how many details were still being negotiated. I think getting through the last four months of tour without a major scandal was the main goal. The only thing less wholesome than a boybander having an oops-baby is a boybander involved in an ugly public paternity suit that would almost certainly devolve into allegations of substance abuse. Even if Louis wanted to fight the allegation of paternity, even if he said he’d never had sex with her before in his life, I think his management and PR team did not give a shit about him personally and would’ve had strong motivations to lean on him shut up and let them put a ‘positive spin’ on things. Rather than trying to bury the story, it seems like they tried to get out ahead of it to prevent any “leaks”. Saying he and Briana “briefly dated” is the most anodyne way possible to describe “allegedly hooked up while clubbing”, and every headline wasn’t just Louis Tomlinson is having a baby, it’s Louis Tomlinson is HAPPY to be having a baby, he’s EXCITED to be a dad, this is fine!! Absolutely no scandal here!! As for her not taking the money, again, either she knows or reasonably suspects he’s the father, in which case she held out because public acknowledgement of her child was more valuable to her, or they just didn’t try to pay her off and jumped into reaction mode, at which point she could hardly say, “Oh, wait, no, I take it back.”

And on a personal level, I think Louis’ background is salient here. I don’t know any man raised by a single mom with an estranged dad who didn’t carry a quiet fear of replaying that in their own lives. So if he had any reason to suspect he may be the father of Briana’s baby, he would’ve experienced pressure to not only go along with it for the sake of the band, but personal pressure to “step up”. Even if he knew he wasn’t the father, if he wasn’t believed, he would’ve experienced this same pressure, just based on appearances.

So then, at the birth- I don’t see what’s so weird about him stepping out to wander around a shop. He wasn’t in a relationship with Briana, why would she want him there? Why should he burden her and her family by awkwardly hanging around at a very stressful point in their lives? Why should he wait in the waiting room for however many hours? I know a man, who is indisputably the father of his child, who went across the street to Starbucks while his wife got an emergency Caesarean, which is waaaaaaay more insensitive. Sometimes people do weird or stupid stuff. If babygate was a planned PR stunt, why have Louis get bored and get photographed buying sunglasses? Why not avoid the hospital all together, or only take “happy dad” photos? There’s some interesting studies of attachment- most women are attached to their babies by the 3rd trimester, but most men don’t form an attachment until they hold the child. IDK, again, obviously there’s multiple ways to view the situation, but “Louis felt ambivalent about the whole thing and wanted to step out for a bit” isn’t...like, proof he’s a bad dad or super bizarre like a lot of people make it out to be.

So Freddie is born (I love the fact he’s named after Freddie Mercury btw, lmao). I think, by that point, Louis had been pretty thoroughly gaslit by everyone around him, regardless of whether he suspects he’s the father or knows he isn’t. He’s spent the better part of 6 months being forced to talk about being a dad, but this is also probably the lowest point in his career. He had literally just lost the job he’d dedicated himself to for 5 years, and I think that he legitimately had to have a little grieving period for 1D. So why not confirm with a paternity test at this point? Maybe he’s being pressured not to rock the boat, maybe he’d feel like a heel for publicly talking about the kid then immediately pressing for a paternity test, maybe he just doesn’t feel like making a fuss. I think he stayed in LA as much for his family’s sake as anything, because, at the risk of overspeculating, if Jay had any reason to think Louis was a father, I think she’d want him to be there for the baby. It is striking, when you look at 2016, the timing of his stay. He’s in LA for 2/3 of the first four months, and almost entirely out of town the last four months of the year. Then in 2017, he starts really working towards a solo career, publicly states he wants Freddie to have privacy, establishes legal custody, then isn’t publicly photographed with him after December 2017.

The custody issue is a whole other thing. If Briana was paid off by 1DHQ, why start shit over his right to see the child? If the stories are planted, why plant them? If the goal is to give Louis the ultimate signifier of heterosexuality, why not play happy families, and if the goal is to humiliate him, having him portrayed as the beleagued father fighting for his rights doesn’t seem that humiliating. IDK. To be fair though, on the other hand, if Briana knows or suspects Louis isn’t the father, that might explain her reluctance to allow him access, while she can’t publicly say he isn’t the father without losing his financial support. It’s also a bit odd to allegedly fight for 50-50 custody then not use that right, but it might’ve been pressure as I think his main goal was to limit the amount of social media pictures she (and her family) circulated of Freddie. You can’t legally prevent a mom from posting pics of her child, except by preventing her from taking those photos. A sort of “cut this shit out or I’ll take him for half the year” thing. Which is maybe a little shitty, but not unjustified- seeking to maximize his legal rights to protect his image is not bad or evil.

As for Freddie being in the care of his grandparents a lot of the time... Like, while a young single mom deputizing her parents to provide a lion’s share of caregiving for her child is perhaps not admirable, it’s hardly unusual. Plus, it seems like half the times we see him with his grandparents, they’re out and about or on vacation? Which seems like a reasonable time for them to be babysitting him, or spending a lot of time with him. Those kind of caregiving arrangements really are just a family matter.

I do get really bothered when I see people say “babygate” must be true, because otherwise Louis would be a bad person and they’d hate him. My own moral sense is very different, haha. To me, it’s much shadier to comply with a publicity stunt involving the life of a real, literal preschooler. Like, image contracts, I understand, but sometimes you HAVE to break a contract. Having a child with a woman you don’t love, seeing that child a few times a year, and paying your child support on time is absolutely not immoral in my mind. I would still be a Louis fan if he did, as they say ‘*** **’, but I am also a fan of him if Freddie is his child.

I think I’ve exhausted almost everything I have to say on this topic haha? Oh, wait, the kid is a leggy 3 year old. He would be a very young looking 5 year old. I work with young children every day, and in every photo I’ve seen of him he ‘appears his stated age’ as they say in the business. So yeah, that’s well and truly out of my system, I think!

In conclusion, I think ‘babygate’ was PR weirdness springing from 1DHQ being their reactionary selves in the last few months of 1D and just generally not giving a shit about Louis on a personal level, I think he’s done his best to minimize this whole thing and good for him, really, I have no bad feelings towards him regardless of which scenario is true. Either he is the father, and he’s paying his child support, or he’s not the father and he’s still paying child support. Anything beyond that does not affect my enjoyment of his music. I think Briana would have rational reasons to behave as she did regardless of her knowledge of Louis’ paternity, and wanting to use a famous connection to try and find financial security and be an Instagram influencer is hardly the worst thing in the world. I don’t like or care about her, but like, she’s not the devil. She had an unplanned pregnancy and she tried to make the best of it. I personally can’t hate her for that. Being catty and mean online is fun, I also enjoy making the occasional catty comment, but I wish people wouldn’t make catty mean comments about, again, a literal actual preschooler.
