About the new information related to nen
Togashi released this news about nen a while ago and I decided to make some observations about it, including Gon's nen change.
For those who don't know, I refer to this image:
Tumblr media
First of all it is interesting to see that many users that we thought were specialist actually belong to other categories. For example, Komugi is an enhancer, no specialist. This probably means that people belonging to this category are not limited to defense and physical strength, but instead can also choose to improve their mind. This explains why she could quickly learn and memorize the positions of the game pieces. This revelation leaves me with a few questions, the main one being:
1. What is the limit of enhancement? Can users of this category upgrade everything? That is: mind, attack, defense, weapons, and we have even been shown users who have improved their healing ability. Can Enhancers enjoy all these functions or is it impossible for the same individual to enhance all of them? I am not saying that anyone in the series will do this, it just aroused curiosity in me.
Another surprise was some of the characters that were placed as transmuters. Youpi and Bisky are good examples, I always imagined they were enhancers. Tsubone is also close to transmutation.
Analyzing what these three characters have in common we can assume that this category can not only change the user's nen, but also their body.
Another interesting discovery is about Melody, who is in between emission and manipulation. Considering the origin of her ability, I always imagined she would be a specialist, but now that I think about it, that position makes sense! When she reassures Kurapika with the sound of her flute she is using manipulation, and when she hears sounds from a long distance she uses emission. Or can her hearing ability not be catalogued, and in fact the range of the flute's sound that is considered emission? I can't say for sure, but there is logic to it!
About Gon, there has been a change of nen. Yes, he is still an enhancer, but it is important to emphasize a comment from Biscuit in Greed Island. In this picture she says that "he should be between an enhancer and an emission type".
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I only found the picture in Portuguese, because I'm Brazilian and I couldn't find the manga in English (even if my English is confusing and makes no sense, that's the reason, I don't know English lol). Along with this line, it is shown where Gon's nen was possibly positioned in the graphic and in this new image Gon doesn't have this slant for emission, he is 100% enhancer. This subtle difference indicates that Togashi still has plans for his return.
More things I'd like to add briefly:
1. Meruem is emission, this means that his ability to absorb the power of whoever he eats is not his hatsu, it was probably just something inherited from his own nature as a chimera ant.
2. The nen categories have levels, and they are: natural, skilled, excellent and extreme. Netero and Meruem are catalogued at the extreme level of their respective categories, so I deduce that to be considered extreme it is necessary for the user to be very good in different categories besides their dominant category.
3. Milluki is as manipulation with expert leaning. What does this mean? What does it mean to be somewhat of an specialist? Unlike Kurapika who has scarlet eyes Milluki doesn't seem to have any different characteristics to be in that position. This means that for users close to the specialization it is possible to somehow get close. What does this tilt change about Milluki's manipulation?
Anyway, I can (and intend to) speculate more about the information in this image in the future, but for now this is all I have to add. Thanks for reading and again I apologize for my bad English!!! <3

Hey!!(^‿^) I'm new to hunter x hunter and I'm kinda confused about the Nen types, if you don't mind can you tell me a little more about them?
And what they do?
Hi! Oh dang okay, this is gonna be hard to explain but here are the basics (look up nen on any search engine and you will get further info but if I say everything here it will be more confusing). I did explain the types (I think you mean the categories people fall into?) but I just went with the whole basics in general since I feel like you need to know the whole thing to really get what’s going on. Hope this helps!
Basics of nen (feat. kimbap-r0ll)
Nen is basically a living creature’s spiritual “aura” or “life energy.” It’s a natural thing, but it can be used as a martial art by controlling said energy. To get started, one meditates and goes through training, however this takes a long time. So, some choose a faster, more riskier version of getting punched, kicked, slapped, etc. by a nen user using nen (this is called “initiation”)!
Nen is structured into four main categories: Ten, Ren, Zetsu, Hatsu. To explain this, I will be using a ball and a soccer player as an analogy
Ten - this is the very starting point of your nen adventure! The idea is like dribbling a soccer ball. It should come to you like second nature if you are a nen master, keeping the ball, or nen, close to your body. The longer you can maintain it from leaving your body, the better. This is because like a soccer ball, you don’t want to lose it! It’s literally your life enegy!!
Ren - this is what you can use to defend or attack an opponent. It makes you stronger and more durable against a nen punch for example by making your own energy burst outward, sort of like pushing another soccer player with your arm from pushing you aside. However! You could also push another player, right? You can use ren to attack someone by using this burst and outward rush of energy to intimidate, to pressure them, away from you. This can sometimes be alluded to “bloodlust” in the storyline
Zetsu - this is a technique to hide yourself from other nen users (and sometimes just skilled people) by concealing your energy or your presence. It will be like you’re invisible. This will be like hiding the soccer ball from other players so they don’t see it! This however means you don’t have ten or ren to protect you from a potential nen user, so remember to use this carefully!
Hatsu - this is what makes nen special! Think of this like a soccer player’s signature kick or move. It’s an individual’s own special nen ability that they create by themselves. It’s how the user wants to use their nen and carry out a certain function using the art. This brings me to the next important info about nen:
There are six main categories people fall into in nen: enhancer, transmuter, conjurer, emitter, manipulator, and specialist. To find this out, you can use ren on a glass (glass!) of water with a lead on the water. The outcome will determine your category! Also there’s Hisoka’s personality test but that’s only so accurate?
Enhancer - did your water rise and overflow or attempt to? This means you’re an enhancer, meaning you have the natural ability to use nen to enhance/strengthen your physical abilities. Most enhancers choose things like making their punches or kicks stronger or more bombastic. Hisoka’s test says these people are more honest, straightforward.
Transmuter - did your water taste different? You’re a transmuter, meaning your nen can mimick the properties of something. Examples of this are nen strings (nen made to mimick thread) or Hisoka’s infamous bungee gum (which has the properties of rubber and gum). Hisoka’s test says these people are not gullible to trickery but are deceitful.
Conjurer - did your water get impurities? You’re a conjurer, meaning your nen can be used to make an object. You cannot however create something that doesn’t really exist (like a sword that can’t break) but there are loopholes to this. Examples are Shizuku’s vacuum which shouldn’t exist with its properties but through conditions it is able to become what it is! Hisoka’s test says these people are serious and often a bit nervous.
Emitter - did your water change color? Then you’re an emitter, meaning your aura can be separated from your body with much more ease. Examples are you can make tiny nen bullets or full on dodgeballs with it! Hisoka’s test says these people are impatient and quick to act.
Manipulator - did your leaf move? You’re a manipulator, meaning you have the ability to use your nen to manipulate living or nonliving things. Examples are Illumi’s needles that are used to control people or Morel’s smoke that he uses to shape and control movements of. Hisoka’s test says these people are argumentative but logical and tend to do things in their own way.
Specialist - did your water cup do anything other than what was listed above? You’re a specialist, meaning your ability doesn’t really fit into any of the categories above. Examples are Pakunoda’s abilitiy to see someone’s memories and transfer said memories using Memory Bomb, and of course, Chrollo’s Bandit Secret that steals people’s special abilities for him to use. A specialist doesn’t mean you are, well, super unique however as it just means you don’t fit the categories before it. Hisoka’s test says these people are often charismatic and surrounded by many people.
These are the very basics but it gets more complicated here, I suggest the wiki page for the most detailed outline. Hope this helps!

A Battle of Wits (LSDF)
Tumblr media
Yokotani is a corrupt family working with the Hei-Ly family. He gained awareness of nen and his hatsu from Morena’s ability. Feeling indebted to Morena and responsible for protecting her, he combined this with his desire for a police that would ignore his crimes while ruthlessly removing those who violate the law against her.
The user must introduce themselves (1) to an intruder (2) into a Place where Morena Perudo is (3) that has broken the law (4). Then, the user announces the abilities' name (5), conjuring a Squad of Toy Soldiers.(1)
The toys have up to (6) five tallies, based on how severe the crime the target has committed (7). The toys cannot be hurt (2) and cannot hurt the target (8) but will try to remove them with opposition equal to their tallies. (3) At five tallies (9), they remove the target without opposition. (4)
Type distribution:
Enhancer: 3 Conjuror: 4 Manipulator: 4 Specialist: 2

For your Sakumo clone isekai oc: you going to have the OC be a doctor or some type of medical/ scientist professional who has random thoughts of either 'what Orochimaru is doing is not ethical or moral' and having a crisis on that and/or they think: ' 'This idiot scientist is not following the proper guidelines or procedures. What the hell?! You're never going to get good results this way!'
ohhh that’s an idea yeah. i’ve been rattling this around in DMs actually but i think this is probably a divergent version of the au then the one i’m actively playing with. orochimaru’s hell house is so violently antithetical to everything issekai oc feeeels deep down is the “correct” version of the world.
the version i’ve been actively playing with with max is “hatsu” (now) “[static]” previous who was at some point like. a fiercely independent retail worker with a history of just. walking the hell out of any situation where he didn’t feel “respected” for better or for worse (or both simultaneously lol… jobs and personal situations and his parents house and and and). hobbiest mechanic. had like… half an electrical engineering degree. something like that.
orochimaru never actually named him anything except “sakumo” while he was trying to figure out exactly how badly he fucked up actual resurrection. (BADLY). clearly, though, he did something to the subject— his development isn’t tracking along expected lines for a blank slate clone at all and he definitely put something in there. orochimaru never told hatsu much about his template in an attempt to not introduce bias to the study lol hatsu legitimately doesn’t actually know kakashi exists. he grew up in orochimaru’s freaky cult lab. like, he knows hes not hatake sakumo and that in practice he’s some kind of cheap clone that failed to live up to what he was supposed to be but. seriously nobody ever told him djdjdj
the person he was and the person he is are so violently opposed to one another that they can’t really coexist and hatsu doesn’t consider himself the same person. there’s something in him though. when everything properly clicked finally age “somewhere between seven and nine he never got an honest answer about how much time actually passes and lost track” something deeeeeep inside him informed him this is totally a cult and he needs to get the fuck out just leave just bail just run as fast as you fucking can. which clashed horribly with the part of him that twitches and even internally refers to orochimaru as orochimaru-sama who he should be grateful too, but the terror won and he got the hell out. left an extremely nervous note behind thanking orochimaru-sama for everything haha. orochimaru laughed daintily while putting out the bounty— what a weird boy, that one. what sort of thing did he put in there…?
and then he runs into…. haku and zabuza…
Tumblr media
being zabuza’s tool is leagues better then being orochimaru’s tool— zabuza&haku help hatsu come up with his name, even! and he’s accommodating of hatsus obsessive desire to look at his own body as little as possible. in practice hatsu is… pretty much a doormat, honestly, he goes back to coping how he coped in sound whenever that voice inside of him screamed and shuts down his own internal feelings about what sort of jobs they take and so on pretty ruthlessly. still, deep down, hatsu doesn’t want to be a tool. haku likes his cute kouhai lol.
mm much like his progenitor hatsu is shaping up to be a kenjutsu specialist. while orochimaru’s a well rounded shinobi who hires other decent shinobi, he can and does learn quite a lot from zabuza.

Emperor Time Isn’t Kurapika Becoming A Specialist
This whole post started with me being confused on Kurapika’s hatsu’s and nen type, mainly on the difference between Kurapika’s SPECIALIST abilities and comparing them to born SPECIALISTS. It’s EMPEROR TIME specifically that confused me the most, eventually to the point that I read up more on Nen, Kurapika and other SPECIALISTS, and eventually came to the main discussion topic.
EMPEROR TIME isn’t Kurapika becoming a SPECIALIST, but it is a Hatsu he made and can only use while he is a SPECIALIST.
STEALTH DOLPHIN is a SPECIALIZATION Hatsu and does not need EMPEROR TIME to use.
I’ll have to explain a lot about this so please bear with me:
What is a SPECIALIST/comparing them to the other aura types (misconceptions of NEN)?
SPECIALIZATION as a nen type is defined by concepts outside of the other 5 nen types. Basically their main abilities/hatsu’s would concoct anything except the 5 nen types. Many people seem to think that being a SPECIALIST means that they can use all the nen types to their full capabilities (as if they were born with that nen category). This is most likely because of EMPEROR TIME which has caused a lot of misunderstandings in the fandom because of how it functions, which makes sense, Kurapika was the first (temporary) Specialist they revealed and explained outright. Anyway this is false, SPECIALIZATION still abides by the aura category rules, specifically they have the potential to use SPECIALIZATION up to 100%, MANIPULATION and CONJURATION up to 80%, EMISSION and TRANSMUTATION up to 60% and ENHANCEMENT up to 40%. Another misconception is that people have an automatic mastery of their nen category as well as mastery level of the given percentage of the other nen categories that correlate with your own. You don’t, a person still has to train to work up to your potential in the main nen category, as well as the other nen categories. "There are numerical approximations to indicate just exactly how efficient one would be at using aura abilities that one is not born into. Starting at one's own aura type, one has the potential to be 100% efficient at using abilities based in that category alone." ("Nen and Individuality" Nen, Hunterpedia)
Explaining EMPEROR TIME and why it is a hatsu not Kurapika becoming a SPECIALIST.
Now let's discuss EMPEROR TIME. My main argument is that EMPEROR TIME isn’t Kurapika becoming a SPECIALIST, but it’s a SPECIALIST hatsu with a hefty restriction, that one second using EMPEROR TIME takes away one hour of his life. My main reason for believing this is because of what SPECIALIZATION nen allows and what EMPEROR TIME actually does, recounting from the description and labeling of EMPEROR TIME in Kurpika’s wiki page. It is listed as only SPECIALIZATION ability, (this may not seem important but it will come back to it when we discuss how Kurapika actually becomes one, as it is listed as only SPECIALIZATION.) EMPEROR TIME allows Kurapika to utilize all the nen categories to 100%, but specifically for a CONJUROR. Meaning by activating EMPEROR TIME, Kurapika’s nen categories are automatically mastered in correlation to his CONJURATION status, not SPECIALIZATION. Which means his percentages are the following, 100% in CONJURATION, 80% in SPECIALIZATION and TRANSMUTATION, 60% in MANIPULATION and ENHANCEMENT, and 40% in EMISSION. So unlike other Specialists (and other nen users) Kurapika can automatically master all of his nen as a conjuror with EMPEROR TIME. But that's not all, while EMPEROR TIME can only master his Nen level to that of a CONJUROR, it also allows the force and accuracy of each nen category up to 100%. “This ability allows him to utilize all the types of Nen to 100% efficiency (for a Conjurer*). Kurapika explains this using the terms ``Level", "Force", and "Accuracy": his "Levels'' in the various Nen categories remain the same during Emperor Time, but his "Force" and "Accuracy" for every category are raised to 100%. Thus, if Kurapika's "Level" in Conjuration was 10, his "Level" in Emission (the polar opposite aura type) would remain 4 at the most, but his "Force" and "Accuracy" in any Emission ability would increase from 40% to 100%, making him evenly matched against a Level 4 Emitter.”* ("Abilities and Power" Kurapika, Hunterpedia). Wow what an OP ability, yeah but we know the heavy drawbacks of the ability. Now why would an ability that is said to turn Kurapika into a SPECIALIST be set to the standards and conditions of a CONJUROR? Because it doesn’t turn Kurapika into a SPECIALIST, it's a hatsu that is SPECIALIST in nature/creation that he can only use when he is a SPECIALIST (Scarlet Eyes) to boost his aura/nen abilities as a CONJUROR since 5 out of his 7 are CONJURATION (with 2 of them being couple with others).
How Kurapika actually becomes a SPECIALIST.
From what we’ve seen during one of the first scenes of Kurapika’s nen training, his aura changes (spikes) automatically once his eyes turn Scarlet. In Izunavi’s own words he said “When your eyes turn Scarlet your aura spikes. Could that mean . . . Let’s try water divination again!” Aura/nen spiking to the point that a New teacher wants their student to retake the water divination test again. This makes me theorize that Kurapika can transition into a normal Specialist once his eyes turn Scarlet (as it is a bloodline ability it wouldn’t follow the rules of nen) to which he created the Hatsu: EMPEROR TIME, meaning he can be a normal SPECIALIST (not forever as having his eyes scarlet does take an effect on his physical and mental health.) So if we're following my theory, Kurapika can transition into a normal SPECIALIST automatically once his eyes turn scarlet, from then on he has a choice if he wants to activate EMPEROR TIME.
Discussing all Kurapika’s Hatsu’s and their aura types.
A lot of people might be thinking. Does that mean that Kurapika does not need EMPEROR TIME to activate his other abilities and could just train his Nen categories?
Yes and no. DOWSING CHAIN, CHAIN JAIL and STEAL CHAIN don’t need EMPEROR TIME to work normally, but they are most likely enhanced minimally (DOWSING CHAIN) by EMPEROR TIME. Neither does HOLY CHAIN for small injuries or slow recovery time, but EMPEROR TIME allows Kurapika to heal serious and severe injuries in seconds (I’ll explain why). JUDGEMENT CHAIN specifically states that it needs EMPEROR TIME (I’ll explain why). Let's discuss the rest of Kurapika’s Hatsu’s, specifically why STEALTH DOLPHIN is a SPECIALIZATION hatsu and doesn’t really need EMPEROR TIME.
The DOWSING CHAIN is just a CONJURATION ability and is used for defense and offense. It’s main ability is dowsings, specifically it allows Kurapika to use the chain as a lie detector but only for one person at a time and if he is right in front of them, it’s unlikely that the ability will work efficiently if more then one person is talking. The chain can also be used to look for a missing individual if Kurapika has met them previously, I’m assuming. EMPEROR TIME allows the lie detection to increase in versatility and efficiency to the point that Kurapika can tell if someone is lying through video recording with the only requirement being that he has to have met the person beforehand. This is most likely because EMPEROR TIME would increase Kurapika’s CONJURATION to 100% mastery, thus his DOWSING CHAIN would become more powerful/useful. (which also means Kurapika hasn’t reached 100% in CONJURATION)
CHAIN JAIL is a CONJURATION ability and it is specifically designed/restricted to being only usable towards the members of the Phantom Troupe or the limitation Kurapika put on the ability would kill him. The abilities of the chain are simple, its function is to envelope the members of the Phantom Troupe and force the captee into Zetsu, forcing the prisoners to only be able to break out of the chain with their natural strength, which is impossible for the Phantom Troupe. The ability is very versatile as Kurapika can ensnare someone from a long distance, as seen with Uvogin’s first capture. This is probably the only ability that doesn’t have any need for EMPEROR TIME at all. If it was activated the only thing I can see it adding to is forcing the prisoner into zetsu the moment the chain touches them. Being Kurapika’s most unused ability it is unlikely it will see anymore updates on the 100% CONJURATION until the Phantom Troupe take more then one trip upstairs, for all we know the restriction Kurapika put on the ability has already pushed the ability to be 100% in CONJURATION.
STEAL CHAIN is a CONJURATION ability that allows Kurapika to drain his target's aura (which is said to be extremely painful to them), putting them into a similar state to Zetsu, allowing Kurapika to steal/borrow the targets hatsu. Because of this the target is unable to use their ability until Kurapika gives it back, if the target dies Kurapika can still hold onto the ability, but once Kurapika uses the ability it automatically goes back to the original owner. Similar to CHAIN JAIL, I don’t really know what EMPEROR TIME could do to upgrade this ability. Although I thought about it, other than forcing the target into a zetsu like state faster, EMPEROR TIME would make Kurapika’s CONJURATION to level go up to 100%, allowing him to conjure up collection tubes (where your blood goes into when the doctor draws blood) so that he can keep more then one hatsu/ability with him at a time if he doesn’t want to use the stolen ability at that moment.
HOLY CHAIN is CONJURATION and ENHANCEMENT ability that allows Kurapika to heal wounds and injuries through its ENHANCEMENT category, if the injury is more severe it could take the chain a longer time for his injury to heal. Because EMPEROR TIME levels Kurapika’s ENHANCEMENT to 100%, Kurapika can heal critical and severe injuries within seconds. So it can be assumed Kurapika’s level in ENHANCEMENT is good enough for him to at least heal average injuries, meaning he’s probably done some training in ENHANCEMENT as well. While he doesn’t fully need EMPEROR TIME full time (As Kurapika is pretty skilled and doesn’t get injured that much) the ability is pretty useful for those rare times Kurapika or someone else is heavily injured.
JUDGEMENT CHAIN is a CONJURATION, EMISSION and MANIPULATION ability and unlike his other chains, it is stated on Kurapika’s bio that he needs EMPEROR TIME to use this ability as his affinity and mastery over EMISSION and MANIPULATION is low, or low enough that he can’t use the ability efficiently yet. (IDK the percentage he needs for JUDGEMENT CHAIN) Which also makes sense why Kurapika didn’t realize when his chain around Chrollo was removed. This also makes me wonder if Kurapika even bothered to train with EMISSION and MANIPULATION, or if he decided to focus more on CONJURATION, SPECIALIZATION and ENHANCEMENT?
STEALTH DOLPHIN is a SPECIALIZATION ability that allows Kurapika to summon a Dolphin-like construction that is only visible and audible to himself. STEALTH DOLPHIN has so far been used in conjunction with EMPEROR TIME, the main function is to analyze whatever ability STEAL CHAIN has stolen, informing Kurapika of the abilities name, function and conditions, STEALTH DOLPHIN can also hold onto a stolen ability that Kurapika doesn’t need/want to use at the moment. Kurapika can then use the ability on himself or loan the ability to someone else by stabbing/pricking them with STEAL CHAIN, if that person is a non-nen user it will cause them to have their aura nodes open up. If Kurapika loans an ability to someone else, a listening device will appear on their ear allowing them to see and communicate with STEALTH DOLPHIN, who will then counsel them on the newly acquired ability. The ability that is loaned by STEAL CHAIN is fueled by the aura of the original owner. No matter who has ability equipped, the stolen ability can only be used once and then it’s returned to their owner.
If Kurapika equips the dolphin with a stolen ability, then he is able to use STEAL CHAIN again, but even if he transfers the second stolen ability he won’t be allowed out of EMPEROR TIME until all the stolen abilities have been used, thus EMPEROR TIME will remains active until all the stolen abilities are returned. Because STEAL CHAIN has so far been used in conjunction with EMPEROR TIME, I think the ability means to say that if Kurapika steals abilities and transfers them to STEALTH DOLPHIN then he’d eventually have to use those abilities or else STEALTH DOLPHIN won’t deactivate as it is technically still in use. During this time, the dolphin will regularly notify Kurapika how long EMPEROR TIME has been active if it is activated, Kurapika can make the dolphin disappear if it is put on standby. If Kurapika faints from EMPEROR TIME overuse than anyone else that is using an ability loaned to them by him will pass out as well. If we were to use my theory on Kurapika being able to be a SPECIALIST without EMPEROR TIME, then many would want to know why Kurapika activated it in the first place.
Other than EMPEROR TIME, STEALTH DOLPHIN is Kurapika’s only other SPECIALIZATION ability, the main reason that EMPEROR TIME is so powerful is because Kurapika put a heavy restriction on it, just like CHAIN JAIL. Well as I discussed previously about EMPEROR TIME’s actual abilities relating to a CONJURER nen percentage mastery. Then you know that Kurapika can only master up to level 8 of SPECIALIZATION, but we don’t know what level he is at right now, EMPEROR TIME would increase the Force and Accuracy to 100%. Therefore it would make sense for Kurapika to activate EMPEROR TIME to allow him 100% efficiency in using STEALTH DOLPHIN. You have to evaluate the situation that Kurapika has found himself in as well. He’s posted to take a position on as a bodyguard on the Black Whale that is literally goes in to a continent that is full of the darkest and unidentified creatures, he has Beyond Neterou to worry about, add into the fact he’s trying to figure out how to take the last of the Scarlet eyes from Tserriednich. It’s revealed that the voyage was a ploy for the King of Kakin to declare a succession war that includes the heirs killing each other and Kurapika is one of the two bodyguards left for the most vulnerable prince, 2 of which have already been murdered, and he’s had previous bodyguards betray and spy on him as well. He then manipulates the whole war to a stalemate by revealing nen, teaching Oito nen and then putting his life on the line by opening nen lessons to all the Prince’s guards of choice. The point is Kurapika is stressed, anxious and nervous, he doesn’t know if his baseline abilities will be enough to keep Oito and Wobble safe, so in his eyes it's best to go 100% at the moment.
Comment your thoughts on my theory and if you think I have a point or if you think I'm nuts! LOL

Nen Type Personalities
Hisoka once said that he could guess people’s nen types based on their personality. Through the vast and colorful cast of Hunter x Hunter, this seems somewhat true as well. But is it really as simple as personality?
In this analysis I suggest that while personality plays a big factor in determining nen type, how someone perceives nen also impacts it.
Enhancers are determined and simple. Most of them never lie, hide nothing, and are very straightforward in their actions or in their thinking. Their words and actions are often dominated by their feelings. They are generally very selfish and focused on their goals. This is reflected in their Nen as enhancers typically rely on simple and uncomplicated Hatsu techniques
Enhancers see nen as power something they can use to make themself stronger through brute force. This is why most enhancer abilities rely on martial arts of some sort, they are just making the body better.
Some notable enhancers include Gon, Phinks, and Netero, all three of them with a physical portion of their nen, although Netero has achieved so much in his time that his ability has transcended his body.
Mizuken and Kurapika even discuss this a bit during their nen training, that one of the easiest ways to have “sheer power” is to be an enhancer which gives physical abilities a stat boost.
Transmuters are whimsical and prone to deceit. Transmutation users have unique attitudes, and many are regarded as weirdos or tricksters. Often they put forth a facade while hiding the truer aspects of their personalities. Even when they don't hide their personalities they rarely reveal their true intentions. Many Transmuters rely on techniques that give unique and unpredictable properties to their Nen that reflects their personalities.
Transmuters see nen as a part of themself, which is why so many transmuter abilities relate directly to the user, most notably with Hisoka and Killua. Hisoka’s nen ability bungee gum is based off of a treat he used to have as a child, and Killua’s conductivity based nen is from his electric torture training. Though we do not know the origin of Bisky’s rejuvanating nen, I suspect it has something to do with her wanting to keep her youthful appearance.
Emitters are impatient, not detail-oriented, and quick to react in a volatile manner. Many of them are quick-tempered and hot-blooded. They resemble the Enhancers in building their impulsivity, but the difference with them, they probably tend to calm down and forget easier. Because of the nature of Emission, many Hatsu techniques created by emitters are primarily long range.
Emitters see nen as an attack, something they can project outwards from them. This is why their nen techniques are long ranged. It is similar to how a wizard or sorcerer would cast fire spells, not quite power in the same way that enhancers have it, but definitely similar. These abilities are flashy, much like their hot-blooded nature.
Conjurers are typically high-strung or overly serious and stoic. They are often on guard as to be cautious. They are very observant and logical, rarely falling into traps. Being able to analyze things calmly is the strength of Conjurers. Many of the items that conjurers create are often used by them in a very deliberate and practical, logical fashion.
Conjurers see nen as a tool. Nen is something they can shape and craft to their liking to create the perfect object for them to use. It’s incredibly convinient for them, one moment they can have their objects, and the next they can whisk them away to hide them. Kite and Kurapika are good examples of this, they don’t keep their conjured items around all the time because they may alert other people of their presence. Their nen only needs to exist when they need it, and when they need it, it’s a tool.
Manipulators are logical people who advance at their own pace. They are all for arguments and tend to want to keep their families and loved ones safe. On the other hand, when it comes to pursuing their own goals, they do not listen to what others might have to say about it. While manipulators often use techniques that allow them to control their opponents they also prefer to use an inanimate medium to control that can be used versatility (such as smoke or pieces of paper hardened with Shu).
Manipulators see nen as something they can control. Nen gives people an advantage over others, and by perceiving it as a control, it allows manipulators to expend a deal of energy into balancing things out in their favor. They don’t need to know how to fight with their bare hands, as mentioned by Shalnark, but why would they when they can control physical objects, or even people.
Specialists are individualistic and charismatic. They won't tell you anything important on them, and refrain from being close friends, but, because of their natural charisma that draws others, they are always surrounded by many people. Because Specialization is unique and can have many facets, most Specialists possess only one Hatsu technique.
My theory with specialists is slightly different than the other theories: due to the nature of most specialist abilities, I suspect that most of them were developed, or discovered, on accident. With Kurapika’s nen, for example, it was only after he used nen when his eyes were glowing that he realized he posessed specialist traits. Then again with Neon’s ability, she didn’t even know she was practicing nen in the first place. We know that adding risk increases the effectiveness of nen, so perhaps those with extraordinary circumstances are more attuned to nen thus developing these specialist abilities without specifically gunning for them.

end-of-year is a tsme thing and halloween is a bwot3 thing but im still really deep in hunterxhunter hell so have a hunters!au
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
dent is a manipulator (of course he is), iris is a specialist and satoshi is....NOT an enhancer, but an emitter. they graduated from the same hunter exam.
more specifically:
satoshi’s a magical beast hunter. hatsu: creates magical beasts out of aura (helps him befriend them), but only those beasts he has met personally.
dent’s a “taste” hunter, aka a service hunter who experiences what his clients request on their behalf, and passes the memories back to the client. hatsu: casts memories/thought into target (memory cast) or fishes for memory/thought/info from target (fishing endeavor)
iris is unsurprisingly a dragon hunter (also a poacher hunter). hatsu: imprints a dragon onto herself. once all the conditions are met, the dragon comes alive and gives iris certain properties or abilities (depends on dragon)

Appearance: Katsumi is a young woman with ash brown eyes and long blonde hair, combed with two ponytails and loose locks which cover the left side of her face and piercings in her ears (In a few words, she is the spitting image of Deidara) . The main peculiarity of her is that in each palm of her hands she has, with sharp teeth, a long tongue and salivary glands; the function of these mouths is to chew and mold special clay.
Her clothing: it consists of a red suit, consisting of a short blouse, with a raised collar and a fishnet blouse underneath, it also has separate sleeves from the red vest, she wears a skirt with openings on both sides with fishnet stockings and shorts over them and used the typical sandals of the ninjas (His clothing was very similar to those of iwagakure). At the back of her waist she wears two fanny packs where she molds the clay. With this clay, she carries out her main technique: the creation of chakra-charged clay animals that move as if they were real at his will, and that at her command can explode with great power or even become bigger.
Personality: Katsumi is a charismatic girl. They have great self-confidence, and they love being the center of attention. She is very perfectionist when it comes to working on her creations (weapons) of hers. She is an energetic and action-packed young woman. She can be very generous with her loved ones and she likes to spoil them (As she is the first of 3 younger siblings, she is usually very understanding with them and pampering them, especially her younger sister Fumiko). She even she can be fully involved in helping people in need.
Tools: Fanny packs with clay, shurikens holder, goggles, gas mask and nitrile gloves.
Abilities: He possesses the Explosive Kekkei Genkai just like his dad Deidara. He is a long-range specialist, but despite his predilection for distance fighting, he possesses a good level in Taijutsu and has enough skill to contain a melee battle. Katsumi having the Explosive Kekkei Genkai from her allowed her to simultaneously use the Earth Element with the Fire Element to give her explosive qualities of Chakra. Katsumi has special mouths on the palm of each hand to create Explosive Clay that detonates them with the Katsu command (喝) and a seal. The clay she uses can be molded into a wide variety of shapes, and can be controlled at will. This allows you to attack opponents from long range. Katsumi's clay creations ranged from microscopic to gigantic in size allowing him to adapt to any situation. She even frequently performs the creation of birds for transport. She usually uses different types of poison in her explosive bombs, either from animals or insects. She prefers scorpions since it is her favorite insect. When she uses strong explosive gases she uses a gas mask and when she is making them with her siblings she uses Nitrile gloves with a full body suit.
Intelligence: Despite her charismatic personality. Katsumi is a kunoichi who plans her battles systematically, taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of her adversaries, as well as how to counter them. Like her grandmother Chiyo and her father Sasori, she has a great knowledge of the human body based on medical anatomy and herbal medicine for the elaboration of different types of poisons and her antidotes. Her bombs are filled with poison, which can completely paralyze the body and kill after three days of suffering from cardiogenic shock, tissue necrosis, and blast burns.
Curiosities:
-Being the spitting image of Deidara, it does not go unnoticed by Hidan that every time he sees her he says Mini dyed blonde. Something that makes Haruka and Haruki funny.
-She likes scorpions.
-Being very familiar with insects, she sometimes falls asleep in the open, inside a hole. To this day, her strange peculiarity draws a lot of attention from her family.
-Being from the Kamiruzu Clan who specialize in the use of bees. She usually raises Bees but she does not usually use them in her weapons. Compared to the twins that she does use in her puppets and traps.
-Her clothes are similar to iwagakure's, but she doesn't like visiting the village. This is because every time she was accompanied by her father Deidara hers, he always left a lawsuit with Kurotsuchi.
-Her fanny packs are orange and with a Halloween pumpkin print since she likes this holiday.
-She uses poisons in her explosive bombs but also different types of tear gas, toxic, acoustic and blinding.
-she is an admirer of luxury, clothes, perfumes and in general, she likes to go shopping with Shiawase and their sisters.

yuh get into it
Um so i have a few ideas for this actually so it will kinda be ranty ig??
okay so pm how i got this idea was a while back i shifted (reality shifted 🤤🤤) to both death note and hxh at the same time ( my friend and i scripted together, we executed hisoka. The script wasnt the least bit serious so i wont waste your time explaining what happened) BUT! after this i had gotten thinking about the what ifs and such of it these two worlds were to coincide. SO that leads us to this next bit.
I had this swaggy idea for light. So, i think the best way to explain it is in this first idea is that the death note would be light's nen/hatsu ability. So for this it would mean that he would be a conjurer. And the notebook would work the same way it did in his canon material, and he would still be known as kira etc. HOWEVER this ability would mean that ryuk , rem, misa etc. Wouldnt be part of the whole plot that death note has, and it would kinda just be light and the task force. So that got me thinking of alternative ways to indoorperate the death note universe into the hxh one, which lead me to this next idea.
This next one would be that everything in the death note canon would stay the same (ryuk dropped the notebook etc.) However, when light hears about the eye deal, it is around the time he is either first learning about nen, or is trying to decide on a hatsu. And so this nen/hatsu ability could either fit into the enhancer or specialist category (im not sure which would be more fitting), but essentially as youve probably already guessed, lights nen ability would allow him to see the real name, and life span of whomever hes looking at. I haven't decided if light had came up with conditions or not, but i think he would most likely have a rule that he could not write said person's name down in his death note for a certain period of time, not only to make his nen more effective, but also to keep him from being under suspicion with the kira taskforce.
in addition the task force and L, Near, Mello etc. would be blacklist or crime hunters.
Essentially, the plot of death note would stay as similar as possible to the canon material, however it would include nen etc.
I would also like to think that it would be its own little arc kinda like the phantom troupe (yorknew) arc 😇🙏

Over the past few years I’ve literally come up with the Hatsu I think Pairo should have given an alternate universe where he and the rest of the Kurta clan live. So like first of all Kurapika and him would become hunters, that’s a given, they wanted to go on an adventure. But Kurapika wouldn’t be a specialist and wouldn’t have his cannon nen ability because in both cases that was because the clan was massacred. I think he’d still be a conjuror, but his ability would be something more about stealth than fighting, he already does really well with fighting without nen and he’s too smart to just pick a weapon to conjure.
Okay and with Pairo I completely made this up but I sort of love it and think it works with his character. I think Pairo would be a Manipulator in cannon, I think it works best with his character and that he’d be really powerful. I also think he could be a specialist, but that would be a conditional specialist like Kurapika is with his uncontrolled emotions, not like Chrollo where it’s innate. I think of my idea of Pairo’s power as something called tag-team. If he manages to hit you with all five fingers, like a slap, he can take control of your actions including your own nen ability and make you fight against your own teammates. The restriction would be that if the person he’s controlling gets hurt, so does he, and he can only control one person at a time.

My biggest flex is that I somewhat understand how Nen works. I get everything except the number stuff. Gon and I both blew a fuse when Knuckle kept going on about potential numbers and current ability and yada-yada. Chapter 7 Bankruptcy my ass.
Life energy = Aura
You can learn how to control your aura as a power. Nen is what we call that power. There are the four basic practices, Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and Hatsu. There are variations of those four so you can use them for different things. For example, En stems from Ten.
Then there are the six Nen types. These types decide what you will be best at doing with your Nen. Every person who learns Nen has a type (or multiple).
- Enhancer - uses there Nen to enhance strength
- Transmuter - can change the consistency and properties of their Nen
- Conjurer - can make physical objects from Nen (must spend time studying and visualizing)
- Manipulator - can manipulate things/people using Nen
- Emitter - can project Nen (ex. Paper in Jan Ken)
- Specialist - anything that falls outside the other five categories (ex. Emperor Time)
Depending on your type of Nen, you can learn others to a certain extent. However, you can only master your Nen ability to 100%. We see an example of this in Heaven’s Arena when tiger fist guy (I forgot his name) focused to much on Conjuring and could no longer use his Enhancing abilities to 100%. As a result he died. The only Nen type you can’t learn is specialist, that would need to be your Nen type already because it falls outside the normal categories of Nen. For example, Gon could never learn Kurapika’s second ability Emperor Time. This is because Emperor Time breaks the rules of Nen. You can’t learn every type to 100% yet this ability breaks that rule. A second example, Neon’s ability. That falls outside of the other five categories. You can’t learn how to have a Nen creature that predicts the future.
Holy shit that was too long and I never meant to write that much so I’ll stop now.

I wanted to do this since a long time .... I'll upload infos about my HxH oc!
Friendly reminder that I'll lovely accept advices and constructive criticism! Just do not spread random hate. <3 Creating characters should be fun, not something people should insult each other for!
CW: mentions of violence and family loss.
Tumblr media
Imagine having a serious oc but the only decent drawing you have is one where they are embarassed.
Okay, let's start this.
BIOLOGICAL INFO
Name: Lewis
Meaning of name: "Illustrious warrior"
Gender: Female
Age: 18 years old
Date of Birth: 27th January (Aquarius vibes biatch)
Place of Birth: Lukso, Kurta clan (don't worry there's a reason for her survival)
Height: 1,57 cm
Weight: 51 kg
Blood type: 0-
Hair: wavy and dark brown. Shorter behind and longer on the sides.
Eyes: brown. her eye shape is sharp, giving her almost all the time a judging and serious look.
Skin: pale, there are a few white scars on her body due some fights.
Body: thanks to the training her father made her pass throught in order to be capable to protect herself, Lewis has an athletic and kind of muscular body. Sometimes it's difficult for her to keep up fighting and training due an illness concerning her legs' bones.
OCCUPATION + PERSONALITY + CLOTHES
Occupation: Blacklist hunter. She's willing to accept assignments from wealthy families (for example, Nostrade's family), but the quest, in order to be accepted, can not surpass boundaries set up by Lewis herself.
Personality: at first glance, Lewis can come off as a sarcastic but overall serious and cold brat. Due her being cautious, random friends and chit chats are a big "no", she will low her standars if the she finds someone intersting and cultured. In fact, for her, culture and intelligence count more than everything else. Her realistic, harsh irony and coldness may soften if someone forms a strong bond with her (but if you think they will be safe from her scarcasm, oh boy, you're so wrong). Slowly, her enthusiastic and curious side will come off. Small warning: joke about her height and you'll get lovely beaten up.
Likes: books, learning, smart people, cats, traveling, fighting.
Hates: ignorant people, loud noises, seeing children and innocent people suffer, killing without any particular reason.
Clothes: total black style, so it's easier for her to not be seen in the dark and during the night. She wears a sleeveless jumper, with shorts and high boots. She also wears her father's gloves in his memory and a neckacle with a blue pendant in hyaline quartz.
NEN AND FIGHTING SKILLS
Nen type: transmuter. Her hatsu consists in transmuting her aura in heat, elevating the temperature until the creation of flames ( red flames are the "weakest", the strongest one are blue -purple flames, said to reach 1400 degrees on the Celsius scale). In order to protect herself from the flames, she wraps a little bit of aura around herself, but sometimes her skin gets burnt from her hatsu, thats why she counts more on a "speed" strategy more than a "strenght" one.
When her scarlet eyes are active, she become a Specialist (I deduced every Kurta does and not just Kurapika, since the scarlet eyes are a really particular thing, what do you guys think?). When in this state, her flames and explosione created by them are way more intense and her aura gets wider. But obviously she has an harsh condition: in order to use it she has to use her own body as fuel (so that's why she has to eat regularly, not allowed to be weak).
When the scarlet eyes aren't active, her nen uses her energy and, when in En, external resources in an area of 9 meters as fuel (so if you feel yourself or the air around you becoming cold, you better keep constant distance from her).
Fighting style (hand-to-hand): her father trained her to muay thai.
TRIVIA
Her father taught her how to play the violin, but she does it rarely due painful memories;
She admires Gon's desire to meet his father because she understand that feeling, she would do anything to meet her mother or remember more and more about her;
She is inspired to Lewis Carroll, the writer of "Alice in Wonderland". Why? Originally she was a BSD and Carroll is my favourite writer together with Tolkien;
She often scolds Kurapika because he is careless about himself;
Lewis has met Hisoka before. She was in search for money and ended up fighting with him.
Why did I make her a Kurta? Six years ago, when I created her (and I didn't watch HxH) I added this thing about her eyes having a red hue when angry due her ability. Then I watched HxH and was like "wtf Lewis";
The meaning behind the name "Lewis" helped me defining her personality;
I lowkey ship her with Kurapika because of their personalities becoming even more complex when together. Their story is a whole mess because they believe that by becoming a couple, they'd just destroy each other.
BACKSTORY
Lewis was born in Lukso, along with her beloved twin brother. Her family was watched with doubt and oddity by the other members of her clan due both her parents being Hunters.
Her mother, a Virus Hunter, passed away when Lewis and her brother were five years old, so their father, a Blacklist Hunter, took the responsibility to teach them about self-defense, the outside world and to always have a goal in life. So the twins grew up knowing how to fight and the desire of making their life complete.
After her 13th birthday, Lewis decided to take the Hunter Exam (because she wanted it? Well yes, but she also aimed at making her father proud). Succeding the exam to exit the clan and greeting her people, she started her journey to get her Hunter License.
Once she got the license, after a long road, Lewis was ready to return to her forest with pride and victorious and show her clan what she was worth. So you can imagine how she felt when during her return trip she heard about the slaughter of the "demonic Kurta clan".
So pained that she couldn't even manage to return to her home, Lewis strayed for two years and half on the streets, living off the duties of a Blacklist Hunter, and then affording a decent house in Yorknew city.
What do I do now, she asked herself. Her desire to make the Troupe pay for their genocide marched together with her will to follow her father and her brother's desire: help the weake, live life to the fullest and become the best version of your soul.
That's how Lewis lives, the grief and rage battling against the desire to go on and live for herself. What will win this fight?
YORKNEW ARK
So time passes on and Lewis decides to try and get the eyes of her clan that will be exposed to the Auction.
How can she achieve this little goal? Of course she had money, but not that much to afford her purchase.
That's how she ended up meeting two little boys who came there for a videogame called "Greed Island" and a man. Their names were Killua, Gon and Leorio.
Lewis' first plan was just to do something similar to a business contract, you help me and I help you. But her planning mind didn't take in consideration the fact that this move would have changed her life.
When she told the three boys what she wanted to buy at the Auction, the group immediatly looked at each other, asking her what she found amusing about a pair of eyes took away from some innocent person.
"Let's call it... personal interest" she answered. Her vague response ringed a bell on Killua's mind, making him thinking she was a member of the infamous Phantom Troupe.
Gon, Killua and Leorio immediatly came up with a plan to make that misterious girl confess her identity and show them her spider tatoo. The plan was perfect and the three of them, after a week, cornered Lewis, ready to attack.
Little did they know about her being sligthly annoyed by this "betrayal".
Leorio's jaw almost dropped to the floor when Lewis' scarlet eyes came out instinctively. The kurta quickly hid her face but it was too late.
Gon was confused because... how did she survive the massacre?
Killua meditated if it was the case to rush and call Kurapika. Or was it a trick to prove false innocence?
With lots of sighs and sarcastic jokes like "yeah I'm the boss of that shitty Troupe, wanna come at our Christmas dinner this year?", the girls sat down and waited for that Kurapika everyone was talking about. It would have been better to kill the three boys and escape but she couldn't push herself to see life escaping Gon and Killua's eyes. They were kids and they didn't hurt her in any way yet... and the way their eyes shone, specially Gon's ones.
And so, she waited until a blonde boy stormed into the room in a rush.
What was even happening? Who was he? These question made her head fuzzy from all the thinking.
"You have scarlet eyes, don't you?" the boy approached her.
"And what if I do?" Lewis coldly looked at Kurapika.
Gon pointed out at Killua how the temperature lowered in the room.
"Show me your eyes" Kurapika said with a commanding tone.
"Don't play with fire, boy, or you'll get burnt"
Leorio interrupted the two of them: "he's a Kurta too don't worry!"
Kurapika scolded Leorio with an angry look just before realizing what he meant.
"Another... survivor?" he looked at Lewis "no it isn't possible..."
The two of them were shocked and couldn't even process the deed. They weren't alone?
"Let me use the Dowsing Chain on her, so I can state that it's the truth and not a mischevious trick.
Still shocked and confused, all of them made sure about the truth: Lewis was in fact a Kurta.
How will this twisted story reach its end? Lewis will decide to help Kurapika retrieve their clan's eyes. Will their opposite lifestyles and dreams go well together? Will Lewis succed to reach the "better version of her soul" and help Kurapika do so? Or maybe they'll both drown in the abyss of loneliness and self sacrifice?

So probably last ask for awhile
But alluka headcanons!!!
1. She learns nen in order to help keep her and nanika safe I know people might say that nanika can probably keep them both safe but I feel like alluka would want to be able to watch over herself and help nanika
2. She’s a specialist something completely different from her family (if you notice all white haired zoldycks are transmuters and everyone else are manipulators)but I’m not good at coming up with what her hatsu would be but I know want it to be something connected with nanika
3. She becomes this travel type hunter and goes around the world and discovers different types of animal and plant life
4. She travels to the dark continent to find out more about nanika and her kind to help understand her better
ahhhhhh yes i love hc’s where alluka learns nen!!!!  riffing off the specialist/connection to nanika theme, i think it would be really cool if her nen was somehow related to healing.  nen is such a versatile magic system, but we mostly see it used for combat in canon & that’s sort of a bummer to me, so i think a nen ability that instead focuses on healing would be really really wonderful & fitting for alluka!!!!  and maybe when she travels around discovering new species of plants & animals she can use her ability to help them avoid extinction!!!  i just think that would be super super cute!!!!
thank you for another fun ask!!!!  i always love chatting hc’s with you!!!!

Some are hunters, some are thieves, some are just regular civilians trying to enjoy their lives. You? You're an informant, and in York New City, a city that never sleeps, you're about to find out just how much of a commodity that really makes you.
With the rain cleared up and the skies cloudless and sunny, your store was busy.  The mafia auction had brought in all sorts of newcomers in town, most of them small fry not worth your time.  You should have been pleased at the business, at making money, but your mood was soured.
Last night, the auction had purportedly been robbed.  It wasn't confirmed yet, but you knew full well who was behind the heist, confirming your suspicions and fears.  The Phantom Troupe was in York New City.  With this new information, and the constant whispers of your customers discussing the event, you couldn't help the agitation that set in your veins.  Part of it was just the fact that the Troupe was here.  The other part, annoyingly enough, was that that meant he was here, and hadn't sought you out yet.  You weren't sure if you should be relieved or upset, and this caused you to be snippy all day with everybody.
Hearing your name get called, your gaze flickered to the door, seeing a familiar face among all of your newer customers.  You gave him a dry smile.
"Zepile.  I haven't gotten any specially made items for you, if that's what you're after," you said immediately, careful with your wording considering a majority of people didn't know about nen.  Seeing he was accompanied by others, a rare sight within itself, you raised an eyebrow.  ". . . Who are they?"
The man in front of you took note of your expression.  "Man, you sure are in a bad mood today.  What happened?"
With the rush hour dying down, leaving only a couple other customers save for Zepile and his entourage of three, you couldn't avoid the conversation.  Don't get it wrong, you enjoyed talking to Zepile, but you were in a bad mood today.  Certainly not in a mood to socialize.
"It's nothing," you responded after a moment.  "Anyways, if you're not here to buy, what are you doing?"
Zepile gestured to the two kids he had with him.  Was he babysitting?  You allowed yourself to take them in in more detail.  One kid was looking around the shop with wide, brown eyes, his green hair standing straight up and his clothes offending your sensibilities.  Next to him was the other kid, seeming more bored than anything, with fluffy white hair and upturned blue eyes.  You sort of wanted to see how soft his hair was.  The last newcomer was a taller man, probably around your age, in a business suit with small glasses.  A peculiar bunch - where did Zepile pick these people up?
"We actually are here to sell stuff."
That was a first, and you raised an eyebrow, eyes focusing on the bags in the kids' hands.  "You?  Sell?"
The brunet laughed.  "They need money for the auction, and so I decide to take them to the best antique shop around."
Your smile was wry.  "I'm flattered," you said flatly.  "What do you plan on buying at the auction?"
The white haired kid spoke up before anybody else, his eyes narrowed suspiciously on your figure.  "It's none of your business."  His tone was decidedly unfriendly, and you snorted, not offended.
"If it's none of my business, then you don't get any of my business.  Sell your shit elsewhere, kid."
The older man among them immediately whacked the kid, and the other kid apologized hastily.  There was a genuine look in his eyes that made you stop for a moment and decide to hear them out.
"I'm trying to get Greed Island," he told you.  You had heard of the game before, and you leaned against the counter, eyes turning upward in thought.  That was certainly going to be a lot of jenny, especially since the copies were limited.  Why did they want to get Greed Island, though?  You had met its creator - you weren't about to break it to the kids, but not only was the game a sham in a way, the guy who created it was one of the biggest assholes you had ever met.
Although thinking about him now, and looking at the earnest kid with the brown eyes...  There was a strange air of familiarity around him, now that you thought about it.
Humming, you examined them.  "I'll make you a deal," you decided.  "Whatever you have, I'll give you double price."  The kids' eyes grew as wide as saucers, but before they could pipe up, you continued.  "However, I want your information."
They seemed confused.  The only one who had understood was Zepile, and he grinned, knowing that they had gotten a victory.
"Information?  Like our names?"  This came from the bespectacled man, and you hummed, pulling out a book out of seemingly nowhere.  It was thick and old, the leather binding showing obvious signs of aging, the pages all gilded.  There were no words on the cover, and it felt almost weightless in your hands.  Holding it out, you gave a somewhat genuine smile.
       "Put your hand on this."
The white haired kid and the taller man seemed skeptical, but the other kid was eager and put his hand on top of the book.  Immediately, his eyes lit up in recognition.
       "It's nen!"
So they knew nen, too.  This only got more and more interesting.  Withdrawing the book from him, you opened it up to the middle.  At first, the tea-stained pages seemed blank, but slowly, writing started to appear on the page as if a ghost was writing the words.  It was your handwriting, neat and concise, but words you had never written before.  The three newcomers watched in confusion, most likely due to the fact that they couldn’t see the words being written.  Once it was done, you scanned the page.
"Gon Freecss?"  The brown-eyed kid - Gon - lit up, his eyes widening.  You continued.  "Hm, your birthday is May 5th, so you just turned 13, and you're an enhancer..."  Including the basics was his blood type, and a little 'x' on a small map, showing his location.  He seemed interested, peering at the page in surprise, only growing more interested at realizing the page was blank to him.
       "How did you do that?"
You smiled a bit more, amused at the kid's reaction.  "It's my nen ability," you explained.  "Well, one of them.  Your dad is Ging Freecss, isn't he?"  At the mention of his dad, Gon lit up even more, if possible.  He was a literal ray of sunshine, it seemed.  "I've met him before.  I have to say, I'm glad you're nothing like him, as he's a piece of--"
Zepile cleared his throat, causing you to pause and realize you were about to shit talk the kid's dad in front of him.  Whoops.  Quickly trying to cover it up, you shook your head.  "I'm assuming that's why you're searching for Greed Island," you hastily amended.  "Although if you're searching for him...  I do have his location."
You felt bad for tacking on surprise after surprise for the kid, and even his two friends looked startled.  "Really?!"
"I have the location of anybody who I use my ability on.  If you're in search of him..."
Gon looked like he was genuinely considering it, before he shook his head.  "I have to find him myself!"
You commended him for the determination, even if both of his friends seemed a bit more dismayed at Gon's line of thinking.  Wanting to get this show on the road, you looked back and forth between the glasses guy and the other kid.
       "So who's next?"
"Why should we have to give you our information?"  The snide remark came from the snarky kid, and you closed the book with a snap, gazing evenly at him.
"If you want double the jenny, you'll stop testing my patience before I kick you all out."
Glasses guy went up next after that, touching the book hastily.  Opening the book again, revealing another blank page, his information slowly started to appear.  Leorio Paladiknight, 20 years old and an emitter, although he hadn't genuinely learned real nen, yet.  He wanted to be a doctor - how sweet.
Last was the other kid, who stared at the book for a moment before begrudgingly touching it, a scowl on his face the entire time.  If Gon was sunshine, this kid was the exact opposite, the pessimist to Gon's optimism.  Soon, you figured out why, raising both eyebrows at this own kid's information.
"Killua Zoldyck...  No wonder why you were reluctant."  You had met a couple of Zoldycks, specifically Illumi Zoldyck, Zeno Zoldyck, and Maha Zoldyck, but none of them allowed you to use your ability on them.  Killua was the first Zoldyck to be put in your book, and he didn't seem pleased about it.  Wanting to ease his and Leorio's obvious worries, you stood up straight.  Closing the book, it vanished from sight, disappearing.
"I suppose it's only fair I introduce myself," you said, giving them your full name.  "I'm a specialist, and that's my main hatsu, Informant's Guide: Novella.  I'm usually the one people come to for information on people." You kept it brief, not wanting to give away too much insight on your ability.  "Anybody who touches my book gives me information such as their name, age, birthday, blood type, nen type, and other basic information, as well as their location.  It's generally my fee for helping people out."  There was no need for them to know anything else about your hatsu, and that explanation seemed to appease them enough.  Not wanting them to ask any other questions, you nodded towards the bag in their hands.
"So, Gon Freecss, what have you brought for me to buy?"
It turned out, Zepile had been helping the kids find items made by geniuses, people who used nen without knowing.  Some were genuinely valuable, and true to your word, you gave them double the jenny.  You weren't one to break your promises, even though it did hurt your cash drawer a bit in the end.  Worth it, you supposed, to get information from three interesting individuals such as Leorio, Gon, and Killua.  It soothed your irritation a bit, especially since you had accidentally let the blond from yesterday slip away without getting his own information.
As much as they interested you, though, you were glad they didn't stay for long.  Your mood may have lifted a bit, but you still weren't particularly up for expending energy into socializing.  Waving 'goodbye', you were relieved when they left, leaving you to deal with the tourists that milled around, listlessly looking without plans on truly buying anything.
Gon, Leorio, and Killua...  I'll have to thank Zepile later.  They are certainly an interesting bunch, and I have a feeling that will not be the last I see of them.
The rest of the day had been mostly uneventful.  You had one girl come in and buy about 200 jenny's worth of antique books, but other than that, no other customers really stood out to you.  Not until the end of the day, when the sun had just started to set.  You had about an hour until closing, and the shop had been empty when the bell rung, signalling a new customer.  Immediately, you had been put on edge.
He was taller than you for sure, with black hair slicked back, and large gray eyes that had made you freeze for a moment.  They reminded you of the calm before a storm, analyzing and unfeeling.  Despite that feeling, though, they were gorgeous.  You had to force yourself to look away so you didn't seem creepy at all.  He seemed to read your thoughts, his lips barely quirking upwards.  Thankfully, he said nothing, instead going off to the side.
He was confident and calm, but you didn't trust him.  His presence put you on edge, and you watched him out of the corner of your eyes, pretending to keep yourself occupied.  You only were distracted when yet another customer came in, dressed in all black and seeming tense.  Great, you could sense this guy's intentions from a mile away.
Sure enough, he pulled out a gun, pointing it at you and causing you to deadpan.
"Give me all of your money, or else I'll shoot both of you!"
He had picked a really bad day to threaten you, considering you were already irritated.  Despite the threat, his black eyes seemed to avoid your own, sweat dripping down his face.  A newbie at that.  He was about to get a rude awakening.
Your other customer had shifted, slightly turning towards the man, and you noticed the symbol on the back of his trench coat.  The St. Peter's Cross..?
Raising your hands up and feigning innocence, you slowly walked from around the counter, the gun trained on your figure.
       "Stop right there!"
As if you'd listen.  In a flash, you darted forward, grabbing his wrist hard enough to crack the bone as he howled in agony.  You pulled him forward, using your other hand to grab the gun as you flung the guy over your shoulder.  He impacted the ground harshly, and with the hand holding the gun you had swiftly disassembled it as if it was second nature to you, the bullets falling to the ground before you dropped the empty magazine.  Your other customer watched in an almost detached manner, but you paid no attention to him.
"The next time you try this," you said casually, picking the groaning robber up by the collar of his shirt and dragging him to the door, "you won't be walking away with just a broken wrist.  Do I make myself clear?"
He nodded frantically, and you kicked open the door before throwing him out into the street, ignoring the pained yelp that came from him as he roughly hit the cobblestone.  Turning back, you locked eyes with the raven-haired man.
"Sorry about that.  It's a common occurrence in downtown York New."  His lips quirk upwards again, barely noticeable.
       "You handled it well."
Yeah, and you just stood and watched, asshole.  Instead of saying that out loud, you gave him a tight smile.  "Is there anything I can help you with, sir?"
His eyes scanned the store as you walked past him, making sure to brush his shoulder as you went back behind the counter.  At the touch, you saw him give an amused smile, eyes locking with yours again.
"Hm...  No, I got what I came here for."
You knew he hadn't stolen anything, so you weren't entirely sure what he was talking about as he strode out of the shop, stepping casually over the dismantled gun that was still on the floor.
You didn't tear your eyes away until you couldn't see him through the shop windows anymore.  So be it - you also had what you wanted, and summoning your book, you watched the words appear in interest.
You had told the others earlier of your hatsu ability, Novella, but that wasn't all you had up your proverbial sleeves.  A sub-class of Novella was another hatsu: Open Book.  It gave you more basic information - a person's name, location, and age.  Of course, you couldn't get any information the person themselves didn't know, but you were in luck that the man knew both his full name and age.
"Chrollo Lucilfer, 26," you hummed, watching the small dot move, signalling that Chrollo was heading towards the outskirts of York New.  How interesting - today seemed to prove fruitful for information and a plethora of interesting characters.  You wished you could get more information from him, considering he seemed to be particularly interesting, but it was what it was.  You could always seek him out and have him touch your book one way or another.
With the sky a purple now, you decided it was good enough to close up your shop, making sure to clean up the gun.  It was useless to you, who detested guns.  You'd just have to dispose of it, and in an instant it was nothing more than crumpled metal in your hands, unable to hold up against your nen.
After the mess was cleaned and the door to your shop was locked, you had went back up to your loft, feeling somewhat tired after the day's events.  Here was hoping that tomorrow would be easier going, you supposed, unaware of the plot that was brewing beneath York New City - one that would pull you right into the middle of everything.

It seems like a lot of the specialist abilities in HxH are like, combinations of conjugation and manipulation abilities with a little Specialist Sauce to give them zing, like Chrollo's book is a conjured object so that's conjugation and the specialist sauce is its ability to steal hatsus, Neon's lil dude is a conjured lil dude that manipulates her hand, and the specialist sauce is the fact that it actually looks into the future, Emperor Time seems like the rare "oops all special sauce" ability that doesn't incorporate the other types, though this could arguably be a result of Kurapika being a natural conjurer with a specialist ability, since he's a conjurer most of the time it makes sense his specialist ability would be incorporating specialist sauce to boost his conjuration power rather than incorporating conjuration and manipulation to make his specialist sauce work like normal specialists seem to do. With this in mind I'm thinking about 2 things, one we don't really see Pitou's specialist sauce at all despite them being a specialist, both the puppet ability and Dr. Blythe seem like manipulation + conjuration abilities without much sauce if they do have sauce it's minor. Two I hypothesize that everyone has some untapped specialist sauce power waiting to be unlocked by a substantially powerful experience, hence why people can "shift" into becoming specialists later in life, both Gon's adult form and Netero's bohdisatva smack of special sauce to me, with Gon's adult form being a combination of enhancer power with special sauce and Netero's bohdisatva seeming to incorporate every Nen type, and Meurem hypothesizing that the bohdisatva was born from Netero being pushed to the brink of madness. Basically what I'm getting at is Emperor Time, Adult Gon, and Netero's bohdisatva are all nen abilities born from powerful emotions, and I think they're all results of their respective users tapping into specialist abilities, which I think everyone probably has the potential to do on some level, which is to say I think your hypothesis that Gon, should he ever unlock his nen again, will be a specialist has a lot of grounding
damn this was so extensive !!!!!! thank you so much for this !!!! i absolutely adore the way you described things the “specialist sauce” sent me HAHJABJHABHJAA but you’re right !!! the reason some people are specialists is bc of life experiences and special environments.... so like.... it totally makes sense that everyone has a lil specialist sauce. i feel like gon’s experiences would turn him into a specialist, he has the life experience, special environment & a clean start !! so it could happen !! ty for this <3<3

I was thinking about Medaka yesterday as I am wont to do, and I realized something
Her Skill, The End, is way more broken than I ever gave it credit for
Consider the fact that she copies Aka’s Five Focus Skill by HEARING about it. This process is described as playing Telephone with other people’s powers, which implies that Medaka can actually customize the exact parameters of powers she gets. This is already somewhat true anyway, as The End’s specific ability is to perfect abilities and techniques, but now she doesn’t even have to have to start with an accurate base and could potentially create new abilities by thinking of them
So what if she were to cross over into other contexts?
In the Dragon Ball world? Medaka could definitely master any given ki technique: Kamehameha, Dodonpa, Destructo Disk, Hellzone Grenade, Special Beam Cannon, FInal Flash, Spirit Bomb. Everyone has ki, it’s just a matter of knowing how to use, Medaka can definitely do it easily. Abilities that are specific to certain races? You’d think she can’t do those cus she doesn’t have the physiology for it, but given that she has witnessed many Skills from Ajimu that allowed her to alter her physiology to match various animals, it’s not hard to imagine Medaka being able to alter her physiology to match aliens, even if she has to create a new Skill for it on the spot. In doing so, she’d have access to Namekian regeneration and asexual reproduction, Majin pliability and absorption, and most importantly, Saiyan transformation. Given that she has perfected versions of both Maguro’s Analysis and Naze’s Remodeling, she could very easily determine the exact biological mechanism of the Super Saiyan form (gathering S-Cells to a specific point at the base of the neck) and then remodel her own cells to have the characteristics of S-Cells. This would probably be especially simple for her because she already basically has her own human equivalent of Super Saiyan in her War, Altered and End God Modes, so she’d probably combine the concepts to create Super God Mode. Even if she can’t do that, it probably wouldn’t matter, because she’d have absolutely no problem learning Ultra Instinct (which is very similar to the perfected form of Auto Pilot that she got from Takachiho) and attaining divine ki to enter a new form that she’d probably call True God Mode (being that she’d be using the literal powers of a god)
How about One Piece? She could definitely learn Haki, and would most certainly have Conqueror’s Haki (”she’s not used to standing in front of others, she’s used to standing above others”, Hitoyoshi, chapter 1), but the much more pressing question is whether or not she could copy Devil Fruit. The short answer is no, but the long answer is that she doesn’t have to. As I said before, all she needs to know is that a power exists in order to copy it, she doesn’t need to have a complete understanding of it. Since Ajimu has an inexhaustible number of abilities, chances are good that any ability that can be used by a Devil Fruit (being made of rubber, turning into a specific animal, etc.) is something that Ajimu is also capable of if she didn’t demonstrate it directly to Medaka, so while Medaka wouldn’t become a Devil Fruit user by interacting with one, she would definitely be able to replicate the abilities of their Devil Fruit without losing her ability to swim
Naruto? Any given jutsu, for sure, and as we established earlier, Kekkei Genkai should be no problem. Not that she’d need to bother with something like the Sharingan, since for all intents and purposes, The End is a perfected Sharingan: not only can she visually break down any technique or ability she sees through Observation and then perfectly replicate it, she also improves it and doesn’t even necessarily need to personally witness it in the first place. The only advantage she’d get from the Sharingan would be unlocking the Mangekyou Sharingan without needing to witness the death of someone close to her, but even then, she’s literally watched Hitoyoshi die twice, so she’s got that covered too
Bleach? She’d need to awaken spiritual sense first, but given that normal people did so just by being around Ichigo for an extended period of time, that’s not too much of a stretch. After that, any given kido or reiryoku technique would be easy enough, but anything beyond that is a bit trickier. I think she could copy the abilities of a Zanpakuto, but she wouldn’t necessarily manifest one just because she’s copied one. That said, if Medaka were to get an Asauchi (a blank Zanpakuto base), she would most likely be able to use the Shikai and Bankai of any Shinigami she faces (even if they don’t have their Bankai yet, I’d imagine), and would possibly be able to use the abilities of Arrancar as well. I’m willing to bet that her Zanpakuto would actually be Asauchi itself, as they are ostensibly considered the “ultimate Zanpakuto” due to their infinite possibilities. Though obviously her mother was never attacked by a Hollow, it’s not hard to imagine Medaka being able to use Fullbring just from being exposed to Hollow reiryoku, which would definitely linger on any Shinigami even in miniscule amounts. I imagine that she’d choose either the flowers from completed suggestions or the Medaka Box itself as her Fullbring, given how much weight they hold for her. Getting a Hollow mask and become a Visored would probably be a simple task too just from understanding how to manipulate reiryoku and knowing what a Hollow is, which in turn would likely allow her to use the specific powers of any Hollow she meets or learns of. Quincy techniques are generally related to specialized equipment, but with enough control of her own reiryoku, she could probably recreate any generic Quincy technique and even Yhwach’s Letters
Shaman King? Same deal as Bleach, she needs to unlock spiritual sense first, but once she has, she would definitely be able to master both Hyoi Gattai and Over Soul in no time, as well as being able to act as a medium like Anna. Now, when using Over Soul, the resulting abilities are based on a number of factors, such as the identity of the spirit in question, the medium channeling said spirit, the imagination of the shaman, and the quality of the spirit. While Medaka could probably make something like O.S. Spirit of Sword with just any spirit and any medium, the Over Soul itself would lose potency by nature of the incompatibility of the shape, the spirit and the medium. Of course, that’s assuming that she’s using any old spirit. We already know that Medaka’s mother Hato, who is of similar monstrous skill to Medaka, was able to manifest herself to Medaka in her inner world, so if Medaka were able to commune with the dead, I think it’s fair to say that she would, without question, enlist Hato as her guardian spirit. With that, all issues of compatibility go out the window; the combination of the two of them with their superhuman abilities would, without doubt, allow Medaka to recreate any Over Soul she wants without difficulty, likely all channeled through something like her signature fan
The only power system I can think of that may pose any semblance of difficulty to Medaka would be Hunter X Hunter’s Nen, but even then, her nature more than makes up for any deficit. Right off the bat, Medaka would be a Specialist capable of at least 100% proficiency in all six Hatsu categories. As demonstrated by Ging copying and extrapolating Leorio’s Emission Hatsu, Medaka could very easily deconstruct and recreate the mechanisms of other Nen user’s Hatsu, but she could not use The End to perfect a Hatsu. Since Hatsu are empowered by their weaknesses and limitations, the act of removing those weaknesses would make a Hatsu less effective. She could potentially add her own limitations to increase their output, which she would probably do anyway, but striking the balance between limitation and impracticality might still prove somewhat difficult for Medaka, especially since most Hatsu are highly personalized. That said, this is only a problem if Medaka constrains herself to using Nen in those contexts; if Medaka wanted to reinterpret a Hatsu as a Skill, there’s very little to stop her from doing so. Kurapika Chain Jail? Chain conjuration Skill + enemy is powerless when bound in chains Skill. No limitations needed. Beyond that, simpler Hatsu would be easy; Reinforcement Hatsu very rarely use limitations because of the nature of how basic Nen manipulation works, Transformation Hatsu just change the characteristics of one’s aura, and Emission just removes Nen from the body, all very simple techniques to recreate. Manipulation and Conjuring would be more difficult, but again can be circumvented through Skill Creation
Even Undead Unluck, where abilities are granted by one’s metaphysical connection to an eldritch manifestation of natural laws, Medaka could again easily just create a Skill to approximate the ability. It’s not like immortality and luck manipulation haven’t been explicitly shown in the context of Medaka Box.
Basically, while it seems like one could say “Medaka is only OP in the context of Medaka Box,” the fact that The End is effectively meant to be “plot armor as a super power” makes it vague enough to be applicable in any given context, circumventing the limitations of other universes. It can easily be extrapolated to be used on the physical, genetic, mental, spiritual, and even magical level, and even if it can’t, all that revelation would do is reveal to Medaka that The End is imperfect and thus needs to be further fine-tuned to perfect itself. The only real limitation on The End is Medaka’s own ability to understand how both it and the target actually work (since she wasn’t able to copy Styles until she learned how to actually use one of her own and has never been shown directly creating a Skill despite the fact that she should be able to with The End or Hanten’s Skill Creation ability)
I guess what I’m really trying to say here is that any “what-if” match up against Medaka is inherently doomed to end either in her favor or a tie at best if the opponent is similarly OP because her character was literally designed to be capable of overcoming anything in a similar vein to heroes like Superman or Goku, and there’s a certain schoolyard joy in knowing that the protagonist of my favorite series can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of them
