something something the choice not being percy's choice to give luke the dagger but annabeth's choice

wouldn't it make more sense? yes, percy gave luke the "cursed blade", but annabeth got through to him first. what would have happened if she didn't? maybe percy would have died instead by kronos's hand. the first time i read the last olympian i immediately connected the scythe's description to the prophecy (it's consistently described as something that affects the person's soul when injured)

there is a consistent pattern between annabeth's choices pertaining to luke and how they affect his fate. hermes is aware of this, getting angry at annabeth for not having done more to help luke when he'd gone to talk to her years prior, because he knows that she could have made a difference.

botl emphathises this point in multiple ways

it shows very clearly the duality between percy and luke and how their narrative foil can flip at any time. what happens to one can easily happen to the other and nothing is certain until it has come to pass. this is represented through the prophecy ("lose a love to worse than death"), which annabeth spends the whole book worrying about (what i would give for an annabeth pov of botl)

it shows how important annabeth is when it comes to fate:

the god of choices himself doesn't come to bother the first person he comes across. he was there for a reason, that being that he knew annabeth's importance in the grand scheme of things

furthermore, going back to the titan's curse brings a new player into the game: thalia. had she not chosen to become a huntress, she would have turned sixteen. here it get's harder to form theories as to what might have happened because, as i've just said, it's difficult to know fate before it happens, but there is one thing that we do know: thalia chose to not turn sixteen because she didn't trust herself to be able to save olympus. she had been a tree for several years, she was still getting used to life again, and the person she trusted most had hurt and betrayed her little sister.

no matter how you frame it, the prophecy is always going to come back to luke, annabeth and thalia

how do half toons work in the books?

~~i know the book's from 1981 but i'll spoiler it anyway~~

~~the WHOLE book is different from the movie (including how toons function in general) but to keep it very simple, toons and humans can uh procreate the usual sort of way. the two in the book are brothers who look completely human. one passes practically unnoticeable as human but the other is a bit more of a caricature of the ham-fisted bodyguard type who gets his hands stuck in vending machines. if i remember correctly it's their mother who was toon~~

I have, once again, read the entirety of The Priory Of The Orange Tree in one go. That is 225,000 words / 848 pages in 11 hours !

I’m reading bell hooks’ All About Love and goddamn is it just reminding me why I love the relationship between Ava and Deborah so much. The reason, I’m realizing, is because it represents love, as hooks describes it. To her, love is definable and has specific components. We can’t call all relationships loving, in fact, she would say most aren’t because we don’t live in a culture that values love. That values the demands love asks of us and the growth it offers. 

Love is commitment to the spiritual growth of another person. Love must involve knowledge, trust, commitment, care, affection, responsibility and respect. And, in hooks’ opinion, love has an unparalleled ability to heal. 

This passage just screams everything I want for Deborah. It perfectly encapsulates why I think her opening up to the love that Ava offers is so vital to her journey. 

“Love heals. When we are wounded in the place where we would know love, it is difficult to imagine that love really has the power to change everything. No matter what has happened in our past, when we open our hearts to love we can live as if born again, not forgetting the past but seeing it in a new way, letting it live inside in a new way. We go forward with the fresh insight that the past can no longer hurt us.” 

To me, creating a piece of art that is honest about her experiences isn’t enough to fully heal Deborah. It’s definitely a huge step, but it only gets her part of the way there. She has to fully let love in before this process is complete.
