Let's Sort The Whole Thing Out (04/10/24)

There's trepidation in naming a thing, by giving something a name you expose it to all the possible pitfalls.

Most things grow in the sunlight, And it's good to bring things into the light, air things out, discuss them in the open.

But things do flourish in the dark. Rhubarb tastes better and is more tender grown in darkness, and grows so fast you can hear it.

So maybe this thing can stay hidden. At least for now, and when it is revealed maybe it will be all the better for the seclusion.

So I've been seeing meme after meme after meme about "femboys are just eggs," plenty of which cone from you (which is why i come to here to ask you.) I thought these were just fun memes, but it's getting to a point where I'm not sure, so I'm just curious where the joke comes from? Aren't men allowed to be feminine without being called an egg or closet trans girl? It just seems like, with ALL of them going on, that you guys don't think cis men can genuinely enjoy being feminine without them having something deeper going on.

Genuinely, I'm just curious if it's just a meme, or if it's one of those, "This is made like a meme, but actually, it's what I think" type of memes. It's hard to tell at this point, and I'd very much like to know

kayfabe break- its backlash about people getting very upset about the concept. the fact is a statistically significant portion of "cis men" in genderqueer spaces ARE eggs, and trans women want to help them, but that elicits a strong reaction. because a sexy cute femboy is just more valued and acceptable than a transgender woman who's gonna dare use the women's room and ask for rights and might not want to be your submissive fetish object.

if even gentle "hey no pressure but you can be a girl if you want!" is coercion to transmisogynists, why not have fun with it? why not make it a joke?

pick a queer identity thats important to you, and imagine if there were regular posts and discussions in queer spaces about how its very okay to NOT have that identity and that there's a BIG PRESSURE to have that identity, meanwhile people also treat you worse than the people who supposedly need that positivity. also the things that were once signifiers of that identity become associated with tge aforementioned other group. you will start to understand why trans women are irritable about this subject and do not want to have this conversation every month.

I get this question a lot <XD When I was first designing my sona I wanted to add something to their hands. At the time my hands were covered in Band-Aids from dry skin and cat scratches. So I thought "Hey! Bandaged/bloody hands would be cool and edgy :DD" So I added them <XDD

Oh yeah, that episode was a bit odd huh? XD I think in my version of Octonauts they didn't go all the way down to its stomach- maybe just into the mouth and got the Puffer fish out.

Now the REAL episode that I basically 100% cut is the cone snail episode. You know why? Cone snails are estimated to have poison strong enough to kill 700 people! And there's NO antidote!! NO ONE would have survived being stung. Not even the Captain. They all would have died and left Peso abandoned on a ship full of the bodies of his friends in the middle of the ocean... :x pretty dark huh-

The basis for my Kirby Anime AU is I just found a way to add all the Metaknights to the story. You know, Axe knight, Mace night, Javelin Knight,,, etc.

This is obviously a SUPER angsty AU. For example, Axe Knight was Metaknight's first follower and best friend. But then he sacrificed himself to save Metaknight. Thinking he failed his soul was restless and he now wanders the galaxy fighting Monsters and honoring Metaknights name.. Not knowing that Metaknight survived. Its a REALLY long story that I should ramble about sometime XDD

I would advise against it,, there are plenty of good reaction images out there to find! I should know, I have 996 of them saved! I'm almost at 1000! XDD

I think its because the poor guy probably doesn't have enough free time to practice consistently. Being the Captain he likely has so much to do all the time.. and when he can finally sit down and indulge in hobbies,, he likely would just rather relax and read a book instead. :( Poor fella

This is an industry related ask. I saw a meme that got me thinking about how people view the BL industry in entertainment. The post goes like this:

GMMTV has a system where they hire actors to work on BLs as a pairing and they ensure the actors gain a strong following before casting them in a het drama and they never work on a BL again despite still reaping the benefits of the fandom they acquired from BL.

When I first saw the post I laughed because I have always joked that a lot of these actors see BL as doing dirty work that allows you to get to higher levels, but when I began to think of it I ended up feeling sad. The GMMTV pairing I thought of when I saw this was BrightWin, I have never watched their series so I don't even know much about their chemistry together but from social media I have seen that they still do promotion and sponsorship using their ship despite the fact that they probably will never be in a BL together again.

Now I don't think any actor should take a project they don't want but the thought kept ringing in my head that they see BL as something dirty which in turn make me feel dirty. This is more of a me problem as I often struggle with internalized homophobia. I am christian and I come from a place where hating gays is normal as queer people are the equivalent to demons. It took me years but over time I have come to realize that queer people are people and even if I can't completely understand them I don't want to pour energy into hate. Most people think I am strange when I defend queer people because they are so strange here. In fact, I didn't want to start watching BLs at first because I considered them as not queer enough and fetishized depictions. Over time I have come to realize that there are good stuff as well as bad ones.

My main point is that thinking of how the rest of entertainment must view BLs just brings all those feelings forward. What is your opinion on how BLs are viewed in entertainment? Do you think my thoughts are merely clouded by my own prejudice?

I have a short answer for this:

In Hollywood right now no one thinks of, cares about, or even knowns, BL.

Leaving that aside. I have a long answer too.

The "rest of entertainment" specifically Asian countries probably regards BL much in the same way the publishing industry regards romance and for much the same reasons and I talk about that in this post. It's a marketing, queer, and feminist issue. And I talk about that, and it's dirtiness specifically around dubcon and being a queer person who likes BL here.

I hope they help make you feel a bit better.

I will add, since you mentioned christianity that for you shame is likely also in play. Shame for liking soemthing deviant, shame for being a fan of anything at all (that's not sports or god).

Many fans have existed for a very long time under various cones of shame. Those who like fantasy and sci-fi, video games, RPG, LARPing, fanfic, erotic art, anime, yaoi, even kpop. To be a fan of something means at some point you will probably be shamed for it. Unfortunately, enthusiasm and love are often perceived as exploitable weaknesses by those who do not possess a similar capacity for immersive joy. Such people are pitiable, in the end, for they will never know true passion for shared ridiculousness.

I'm one of those who got stubborn about it and decided to mount a defense (which for me meant advanced degrees). But it's a battleground to make it clear that just because a thing is popular, romantic, charming, cute, appealing, sweet, or fun doesn't make in unimportant.

Finally, all industries that produce pop culture are inherently (or grow to be) corrupted and polluted in some way. Film, music, art, publishing, you name it. Any industry that makes money off talent and image is going to end up with gate keepers and middleman whose sole function is exploitative. Because that's how entertainment makes money.

It is possible to still love a thing while knowing its inception is flawed. That is not weakness, that is survival. Without the uplift that enjoyment gives us, without shared bits of pop culture and entertainment, without art (in whatever ridiculous form you need to consume it) there is no change, or growth, or connection within culture (or across cultures). There is no exploration of boundaries, there is no challenge to the social norm. There is no entertainment and distraction. And there is no escape from reality and the mundanity of everyday life.

If you need it, it's there for you, as flawed as it may be. Like a chipped glass, it still holds the water you need to drink to stay hydrated.

And I won't look at the smudges if you won't.

Re: the online tetrachromacy test. This test was disproven soon after its release in 2015. Snopes article here (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/people-4th-retinal-cone/) and some fun, general-purpose info about how tetrachromacy works/how common it is (i.e. one confirmed, documented case) here (https://www.healthline.com/health/tetrachromacy).

The only reason I feel compelled to point this out is because you seem like you're very science-minded, and you may want to know this meme is bunk.

Also, very pettily, I dislike how much yellow hate there is in the world, so having people justify their personal preferences with "scientific reasons" is irritating, even if it's ultimately harmless. Just gotta represent the "all colors are fine and it's about color relativity and context" gang, before I disappear back into the ether...

Tommy lied in the bed of Phil & Kristin’s spare bedroom. It was 1 in the morning, and the kid was sitting there on facetime with Ranboo! What is it with these two and staying up late?

They’d ended up sending eachother memes and funny videos back and forth even though on facetime, and Tommy was trying so hard not to laugh so he wouldn’t wake up Phil or Kristin. But Ranboo then sent him a video of a compilation of Schlatt reacting to his fans stealing things like street signs, traffic cones, shopping carts, etc, and Tommy burst out laughing. Ranboo did as well, Tommy’s laugh being highly contagious.

I guess things are a lot more funnier when its late at night.

Phil was woken up, but not Kristin. he sighed, planted a gentle kiss onto Kristin’s forehead, and got up to go check on Tommy.

“Dahahamnihihit, Rahanbohoo! You’re gohohonna gehet mehe in trohohouble!!” Tommy tried to whisper yell but at this point he wasn’t anywhere near quiet.

“Nohot my fahault you dehecihided toho stahay at Phihihil’s instead ohof my house!” Ranboo retorted. In fairness, Tommy was fully given the option to stay at a house where there was nobody around to complain about them being too loud at 1AM. But it’d been ages since he’s seen Phil!

“Oh fuhuck OHOHOHOFF- PHIL?” Tommy whipped his head around, a wide smile on his face. Phil had snuck behind Tommy and squeezed both his sides.

“Phihil! What the hell?” Tommy exclaimed, and Ranboo set his phone down with a fond smile, resting it against his pillow so he could see this go down.

“You need to be quieter Tommy, you’ll wake up Kristin,” Phil told him as he sat down next to him. “Why are you still awake? Its nearly 1:30 now.”

Tommy stayed silent for a bit, a little embarrassed now as Phil was being soft with him while he was still on call with Ranboo.

“Can’t sleep.. bored.. and I miss Ranboo…” He said the last sentence very quietly, but Ranboo and Phil both heard it.

“Tom I miss you too but you chose to stay there—“ Ranboo said with a smile, and Tommy promptly flipped him off.

“How about this, I will help you get to sleep, and me, you, and Kristin go visit Ranboo tomorrow?”

Tommy’s eyes lit up and his smiled, “yes!”

“Alright. Say bye to Ranboo, and we will see him tomorrow, alright mate?” Phil carded a hand through Tommy’s hair and Tommy turned to his phone.

“Bye Ranboo,, I’ll see you tomorrow,” Tommy mumbled, loud enough for Ranboo to hear though.

“Bye, Toms. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Ranboo exclaimed, allowing Tommy to be the one to hang up so it wouldn’t seem like he wanted to leave. He really didn’t, if he was being fully honest.

Tommy pressed the bright red hang up button, and turned back to Phil.

“So.. how do you plan on getting me to sleep?” Tommy queried, genuinely curious as to what Phil meant.

Phil didnt give a verbal resposne, instead, he gave a response of lightly wiggling his fingers at the boy with a fond smirk.

Tommy flinched and tensed at the sight, a wide smile immediately appeared. “Phihil-“

“You alright with it, mate? I’ll be gentle, I promise you.” Phil pulled Tommy into a genuine hug, and Tommy melted into the affection with a slight nod.

Phil smiled and began to lightly drag his fingers up and down Tommy’s sides, producing giggles sweeter than honey from the teen.

“Phihilll.. ihit tihihickles,,,” Tommy whined through his giggling and Phil’s soft smile turned into a grin.

“Aw, It’s supposed to, Tom,” Phil started wiggling his fingers, but not too much as he didnt want to overwhelm the boy. Tommy’s giggles picked up as he released himself from Phil’s hold and lied down on his stomach out of instinc.

“Sohohomewhehehere ehehehelse plehehehease..!” Phil complied immediately, switching to tracing shapes into Tommy’s back and deciding to give him head scratches along with it. Tommy practically melted into the bed.

Phil audibly cooed at the teen below him. Everyone knew that Tommy was a soft kid off camera, and that he loves physical affection no matter how much he’d deny it.

“Shuhut up Phihil,” Tommy giggled and tried to smack Phil’s arm, however it was pretty difficult as he could not reach far behind him.

Phil soon let up on the tickles as Tommy seemed pretty tired. “You alright, mate?”

“Mhmm.. tired..” Tommy flipped over to lay on his back, and Phil got up to leave.

“No.. stay, please..” Tommy reached out his arms and did grabby handd, Phil audibly cooed as he lied down next to the boy.

Tommy curled up against Phil, his head rested on his chest. “G’night Phil..”

“Goodnight, Toms,” Phil carded a hand through the teen’s blonde curls, and the two then fell asleep almost instantly.

Phil told Ranboo and Kristin about what had happened that night, and Tommy was screaming over them about how it didn’t happen.

Nobody believed Tommy.

Moonlight likes Neon! They warmed up to one another quickly because they share most of their creative interests, and Moonlight probably made a few necklaces for Neon as well as asking to learn all about xeir early 2010s art programs, and they often go clothes shopping together (some of Neon’s extremely vibrant style has definitely rubbed off on Moonlight). They’re just good friends overall!

Argon’s initially standoffish presentation intimidated Moonlight a little at first, and to this day they’re a little distant, but they’ve grown to appreciate one-another’s company. I do like imagining this conversation with eir:

Moonlight and Spectrum clicked in a strange and wonderful way. Their friendship consists of them texting surreal memes to one another at 11 pm and occasionally doodling on one another’s arms and faces with makeup and taking (mostly) visually pleasing photos of the doodles in question with Moonlight’s Polaroid camera. Moonlight is one of the few people who Spectrum lets touch its hands. They are peak ADHD-autism duo.

ok ok SO. in gotham there is a batsignal that’s essential a giant flashlight that the GCPD can use to get in contact with Batman and his brood.

BUT there is also a bat, named Signal.

the signal is pretty cool. he’s the only bat that patrols during daytime and he goes over the entire city by himself while the night shift has like twenty people lmao.

but the most interesting thing about the Signal is that when he first came onto the scene, it was during a time when the batsignal (the light) was broken. that, combined with his name lead to multiple gothamaites theorizing that the batsignal had somehow gained the ability to have a human form during the daytime. and then at night reverts back to it’s inanimate form. which might sound wild, but really isn’t the craziest thing to ever happen in this city.  

unfortunately, the Signal has been spotted helping out the bats during the night, so this theory isn’t as strong as it first was. but it’s still a fun one that i personally subscribe to.

I… I… I don't have any excuses, I just think he’s neat, ok?! There has always been something about the sarcastic talking animal sidekick trope that speaks to me, even though I can’t explain why. He’s just such a angry, self-centered, fun little guy, and he has a real character arc that runs through all of the 90s animated media! Love his role in the TV series, and I also love that he went off with Aladdin’s dad at the end of King of Thieves. For better or worse, he’s my favorite Disney character, period!

2. Bad Bird/Karamaru (Samurai Pizza Cats/Kyatto Ninden Teyandee)

SPC is a show from the mid-90s era of dubs, and it’s generally beloved for taking a rather loose approach to its translation of the original source material. Bad Bird is yet another bird-type henchman, a rival to the "star" character, a bit of a punching bag, and also not-really-all-that-evil. I uh… I guess I have a type? *shifty eyes*

3. Jose Carioca

Oh sh*t I lied, I do actually have ANOTHER favorite Disney character! Who is a bird!! I honestly don’t know why I have such an attachment to Jose. Three Caballeros was something I ONLY watched at my grandma’s house as a wee one, so I do have some very specific childhood memories of it, and little me always thought this charming parrot was the best part. I have never seen anything he featured in that didn’t originate in the 1940s (yeah, I slept on the DuckTales reunion because I don't have cable or Disney+), but I’ve heard he has (had?) his own long-running comic book series in Brazil. I’ve always wanted to see one of those!

I uh… I definitely have a type. Who knew?? ^^;

4. Ryouga Hibiki (Ranma 1/2)

Ok look. I came into Ranma 1/2 in a pretty weird way: looking it up obsessively on the late 90s Internet, falling in love with character descriptions, screenshots and promo art, and reading fanfiction before I was able to watch or read ANY significant portions of the source material. Ryouga was always kind of my favorite back then, and he still is now (even though I have only seen a few of the OVAs and read about half of the manga). He’s just. He’s such an idiot (affectionate). But he's a great rival, a dog person, has Feelings but is incredibly awkward, and generally means well.

5. Ben Wyatt (Parks and Rec)

Live action? GASP! Just… Ben Wyatt is a MOOD. The entire ensemble cast of P&R is amazing, but it’s incredible how much Adam Scott and Rob Lowe brought to the table. I am very normal about Ben, Cones of Dunshire, and the Letters to Cleo shirt (I am not).

6. Lily Aldrin (How I Met Your Mother)

While I will watch Alyson Hannigan act in pretty much anything, HIMYM is a total comfort show for me, and Lily is just *chef’s kiss.* Don’t really have much more to say than that!

7. Lum(?) (Urusei Yatsura)

UY has such a HUGE ensemble cast with tons of interdependencies, you practically can’t isolate one character without at least three others tagging along. You also can’t think too hard about them, because they are all idiots (affectionate) (there is definitely a distinction to make between characterization being good and characterization being deep). Lum is... not my favorite character (that might actually be the manga version of Mendo?), but she's such a dang icon, plus she’s the one I've tried to draw the most, so that… counts?? Much like Ranma 1/2, I also have to factor in all the years I spent wanting to experience UY. Amazingly enough, I've seen more of it than Ranma at this point!

Currently wishing I could watch the reboot too, because the manga characterization/version of events might actually be getting their day in the sun? :D

8. Bentley (Sly Cooper)

Oof. OOF. Why did I do this to myself. The Sly Cooper series is a 3D platforming series from the PS2 era of video games. Penelope from Sly 3 might be my favorite character conceptually (she brings something really fun to the table, and geek girls FTW!), but her being The Fave is hampered by the fact that she only appears in the one game (What's that? Sly 4? Sorry, don't know what you're talking about). Sly 2 is hands-down my favorite entry in the franchise, and while he’s really difficult to play as, Bentley’s development across the original trilogy is… ghhh. IT’S SO GOOD, as are his friendships with Sly and Murray. Bentley!!! (I still love you though Penelope, you got done so dirty).

9. Donatello (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

I don’t believe I’ve watched/played/read any TMNT property that is younger than a third-grader at this point. But Donnie’s the Smart One, and he is Purple. ‘Nuff said!!

OK so. Birds and smart turtles. We're learning more about what my types are all the time...

10. Daisuke Jigen (Lupin III)

I have not seen much Lupin III. But Jigen is cool <3

thinking this morning abt a post i saw a while ago which i should have saved bc it had things in it that i disagreed with that i now cannot quote with any accuracy (life tip: save the posts u disagree with bc it means that when u finally figure out WHY u disagree with them you will actually be responding to what was actually there instead of your plato’s allegory of the cave version of it)

anyway

the post in question, iirc, was talking about like........ i think the crux of one of its arguments in support of its point was this idea of fanfiction being somehow unable to draw or explore characters with the same depth as an original work - so you can already see why i disagreed with it in spite of the fact that the main point it was trying to support was one that i DO agree with - which is that the trend of turning your fanfic into Original Fiction Do Not Steal by just “filing the serial numbers off” needs to stop bc it’s a bad way of trying to create original fiction. anyway one of the points the author made in support of their main statement was that true fanfic should be rooted in the love and exploration of the original world and therefore the original work, and so that’s why so many AU fics fall flat

and i just had to stop and pause to reassess how apparently the way this person approaches the very concept of AU fanfics is apparently so diametrically opposed to my own bc i AM The AU Warlock who is only capable of writing really weird niche AUs, and i don’t think i have ever approached any AU without this being my driving mission statement:

ANYWAY i don’t know if i had a point with this post at all, but it really is interesting sometimes to get a glimpse of how some people truly live in an entirely different world to the one you inhabit huh

Time For Fel's Opinions #for real though i. i have never been capable of even coming up with a CONCEPT for a 'normal' au. #the closest i think i've ever come is the as-yet-unwritten Amelie AU concept i came up with for jmart? #but even that came about bc i realised that Amelie is EXACTLY the sort of person you would get if you had a Lonely-Web-Beholding-aligned-- #person who somehow managed to remain benevolent. #i have more thoughts that were going thru my head about this but they're too long for tags #and also i'd want to find the original post again first #bc like. i agreed with the 'u cant just make an original work by filing serial numbers off ur fanfic bc then u remove all the actual-- #personality of the characters u were writing for' point but like. #look. i'm not saying there aren't some very bland cookie-cutter AU fanfics out there that do not give a whit for characterisation and themes #and instead choose to lean heavily on shallow fanon tropes and stock fanfic genre conventions. #we've all seen it. #but making the statement that all AU fics fall under that banner is a Bold Fucking Claim my guy #like yes ok ok my own jimmies are personally rustled by this bc my entire brand is #'weird niche AUs with a heavy emphasis on exploring the canon themes and characterisation within a different context to the canon universe' #but i've also read a fair amount of AUs that REALLY sink their teeth into studying the characters and themes bc the AU setting allows them #to look at it from angles that canon simply cannot! #ANYWAY
