National River Day

These winding natural pathways, carving through the earth, play a vital role in sustaining diverse ecosystems and human life.

Given that rivers have been a vital part of human activity for millennia, it’s about time that these flowing bodies of water got a day where they are given the love and appreciation they deserve. National River Day is here to bring some attention to the benefits that rivers continue to offer humans and also to remind people that rivers are natural resources that need to be taken care of! 

History of National River Day

Bodies of fresh waters, especially rivers, have been foundational in the development of human civilization. With the necessity for people to live very near a water source, the flow of rivers has often been one of the most important factors in determining where a family or larger community could settle. Providing a supply of steady drinking water as well as opportunities for keeping crops watered and even allowing for transportation and trade.

Sometimes quiet and sometimes ferocious, rivers offer not only sustenance for life, but they also provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. From fishing and canoeing to white-water rafting and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), rivers can be sources of entertainment, exercise, and just a heap of good old fun! Just be sure to treat the water and the area surrounding the river with respect by protecting it from pollution and misuse.

Today, due to various issues including climate change and human interference, the water sources of the planet, including oceans, seas, lakes and rivers, are becoming compromised. Through pollution or by simply drying up, many of the world’s rivers are less healthy and less bountiful than they were even just a few years ago.

National River Day has been established to raise awareness about and show appreciation for the vital, life-giving source that rivers all over the planet!

350 Million years ago 

Oldest Known River 

The Finke, in Central Australia, is believed to be the oldest river in the world.

10,000 BC

Mississippi River is formed 

A very important river in the US, the Mississippi is formed when glaciers from the last Ice Age recede.

1968

Nationwide Rivers Inventory (NRI) begins 

This effort to understand the ebb and flow of the rivers throughout the US comes about through the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

1985

Big River hits Broadway

This 10x Tony award winning musical hits New York’s Broadway to tell the story of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn.

2003

Euphrates and Tigris rivers show signs of drying up

Satellite images show some of the lowest levels in human history for these important rivers in the Middle East.

Get excited and involved with National River Day by getting educated about some of the most interesting rivers in the world. Raise awareness for this important day by learning and sharing some fun facts in person with friends and family, or on various social media outlets.

Check out some of these fascinating facts about rivers to get started:

Found in North Africa, the Nile river is considered to be the longest river in the world, measuring more than 4,100 miles long, flowing through eleven different countries. The Amazon river comes in a close second, at 3,977 miles.

In 2007, a Slovenian born marathon swimmer, Martin Strel, swam the entire Amazon river – complete with crocodiles, piranhas and more.

Rivers that run over cliffs eventually lead to stunning waterfalls. The highest one in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela, measuring 3,212 feet high.

Rivers not only provide sustenance for humans, but thousands of different varieties of animals, plants, and at least 10,000 different species of fish.

Organize a River Clean Up

An excellent way to get involved with National River Day would be to grab a group of friends or some members of a volunteer organization in the community and head on over to a local river to do some cleaning up. Equipped with garbage sacks, trash sticks and rubber gloves, this would be a great time for a group of folks to spend some time picking up trash, debris, and litter. This is particularly important in regards to items made of plastic that will never biodegrade and can even be poisonous to the water source and the animals that depend on it.

Watch a Movie Featuring a River

Show some love to the life-giving rivers of the world by checking out a movie or film that features one. Get started with one of these:

A River Runs Through It (1992). This one features Brad Pitt, playing the son of a rural minister (Tom Skerritt), where they spend time fly fishing on the river.

The River Wild (1994). This thriller starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon takes place almost entirely on a whitewater rafting river adventure.

Riverdance: The Animated Adventure (2021). Kids and adults alike will enjoy this animated film which teaches an appreciation of this dance as a celebration of life.

Green Days in the River (2014). This coming of age tale tells the story of a boy in a 1952 village who struggles with poverty, love and life.

Make Some Sustainable Water Choices

One of the best ways to get involved with National River Day might be to make some choices that will help to reduce the use of water personally and in the local area. Check out some of these important ways that households can live more sustainably and conserve water:

Install Low Flow Shower Heads. Use less water by installing modern shower heads in every bathroom in the house. It’s possible to save up to 3,000 gallons of water or more each year!

Collect Rainwater. Those folks who live in places where they need to water their garden or lawn can save on water by collecting it in a rain barrel and then using it as needed. Folks in Colorado or Utah may want to check with local legislation first to see if this is permitted.

Turn Off Faucets. Instead of letting the faucet run in the bathroom while brushing teeth or in the kitchen while walking over to the refrigerator and back, shut the water off every single time.

Save Water with Flushes. A new dual-flush toilet or a conversion kit for a current toilet allows less water to flow for flushes.

Join a Conservation Group

Many different conservation organizations are working to keep rivers clean or to clean them up after they have been polluted. They advocate with government agencies and companies to change laws that work to protect natural areas, including rivers. In honor of National River Day, join in by volunteering with a local group.

Those who feel like celebrating this unique waterways at another time of the year should look into World Rivers Day, which takes place in late September.

Have you ever thought to yourself: Yee howdy, I wish I could know what everyone thinks of my favorite character, and I also wish we could all definitively rank them in popularity based on the whims of the public? Then do I have the thing for you!

Right out the gate, it's time to vote for favorite characters. The votes for favorite NPC (human) and favorite NPC (other) will be running alongside each other, with the vote for NPC (other) starting a little later to make them both finish at the same time and end in an epic dual victory.

I have chosen to split them up because there's a lot of NPC's and we can expedite the process somewhat by having separate tournaments running alongside each other.

Humanoid creatures such as Pandorians residing in the circus will be counted as humans because that's how they choose to present and I will respect that.

Certain conditions apply regarding characters added to SSO just to host races, NPC's that are named but do not take part in quests, and characters from earlier games. these characters will not partake because the list is so. long. already.

Every poll will be accompanied by a picture and a brief description to refresh your memory, so don't worry if you can't remember them just by name! If you have any concerns or can't see your favorite NPC anywhere, send a message or an ask.

The first NPC (human) tournamnet will take place over 3 sessions of 40 posts per week, because it's 120 posts and I don't want to overwhelm you with that many posts. Once we've narrowed it down to 60 favorites it will be split into 2 sessions, and once we've only got 30 contestants left, I'll post them all in one go until a winner is declared. That's also when the NPC (other) polls will be posted.

[Inspiration from Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse]

[I dreamt about spending Christmas Eve at a club made for Cartoon Network villains, however the portals to their universes were frostbitten so the host/owner of the club decided to celebrate their Christmas with a party]

Today was Christmas Eve at the Cartoon Network Villains Club, the inside is showering lots of snow across the studio and many of the rooms. Many of the Cartoon Network's villains are seated, clapping and cheering to their valuable host and club's owner; Lord Vanity! 'That's the end every villain and thank you very much for spending a wonderful Christmas Eve with us prideful demons and having a safe trip to your ho ho homes' says Lord Vanity, joyfully at the guests! As everyone heads back to their universes, Lord Vanity was in backstage with his small imp minions. 'Great work our pridefulness' says the female imp. 'With everyone heading home, we can now celebrate our Christmas together my lord' says the male imp! Then their new guest Flicky came in and said, worryingly 'Lord Vanity, They can't go back home' 'How?' asks Lord Vanity 'The portals to their universes appear to be frostbitten' says the receptionist imp pointing at the entrance. 'Now my dear, how bad can I really be' says Lord Vanity while walking past the villains until they are in front of them and they stopped and said 'Oh'. The portals of the universes the villains live in are all frostbitten, meaning they are all stuck in forever. 'Damn it!' says Father, facepalmed. 'Now I wouldn't be able to spend the Christmas with my delightful children' says Father, angrily. The villains think for a minute until Lord Vanity thought of something, something that can help the villains enjoy their Christmas... together! 'I have an amazing idea my loyal ones!' Then Lord Vanity jumps and levitates himself with a grinny smile, saying to everyone 'We all can celebrate our jolly Christmas party right here' 'Great idea Lord Vanity!' says Cree, as everyone heads back to the main studio.

Then it cuts back to the main studio all decorated festively and Christmas music playing. 'Hot cocoa, comin right up fellas' says one of the serving imps carrying a stack of plates with white mugs of hot cocoa. Then the imps set up the tree and one of them sets the fireplace and they ask one of the villains for help 'Hey Father, do you mind firing this baby up!' 'Alright!' Father unleashes a snap of his fingers, which releases his fire abilities and he releases his flame at the fireplace. Then many of the imp minions carry over the tree and decorate it with tinsels, baubles and the bright, shining star on the top!

Sooo I have thoughts on what Idaho's state spirit would be, and would like to share them.

Idaho has tiny population, and so his spirit would be weaker. I was thinking along the same lines as Minnesota's with the water, but make it fresh water fishing related. Specifically, trout related because there is so much trout here. I was thinking maybe have the scales be on his skin? Or fishing wire that criss crosses across it like a low-budget spiderman costume.

There's also the idea that he should have the spud eyes that grow off of him. But also maybe not, because it would look like he has some sort of deranged fungal infection.

Sorry for the long wait, I’ve been pretty busy so I couldn’t really focus on posting. But now that I’ve got some free time, I’m gonna start going through my request backlog!

Anyways, thanks for sharing your ideas! Even though spud eyes would be pretty fitting and it would be good if I wanted to lean into body horror, I’m gonna go for your trout scales idea for aesthetic reasons.

Idaho Headcanons

Idaho’s State Spirit form is salmon-colored scales on his face as well as Rainbow Trout fins on the sides of his head (like how some people draw mermaids). The fins react to his emotions like ears.

If Idaho’s Spirit gets stronger, more scales and fins will appear on his body. He’ll start looking kind of like the Gill-man from Creature from the Black Lagoon with way more people, but with rainbow trout traits rather than non-descript aquatic features. Idaho will still keep a lot of humanoid features like his face and overall anatomical structure, though.

He’s pretty good at swimming, and he prefers swimming in freshwater lakes rather than the salty oceans. Saltwater dries out his skin when he swims in it for too long.

Basically already mastered using the versatility of potato in cooking. Potato noodles, potato broth, potato bread, potato meat-substitutes, name a food and he’s probably made it with potatoes before. Vodka? He’s made it. If he hasn’t made it before, you better believe he’s going to.

The house will never run out of potatoes to use, which is good since a lot of the states use potatoes in their cooking. There will always be a fresh basket in the kitchen, and if that runs out in a day, Idaho will just go and get more. 

He has a rock collection featuring many of the unique and special stones from his state. Some of these rocks include a star garnet, Bruneau jasper, and a pinfire opal.

Idaho was the first state Montana formed a real connection with. With their status as neighbors and a common interest in rocks, they get along pretty well.

They’ll go rockhounding together, and while Idaho is knowledgeable about rockhounding itself, Montana knows a lot more about the science behind the stones. The two of them will find cool rocks and admire them while Montana info-dumps about the aspects Idaho doesn’t know.

Personifications often know fairly random skills, and Idaho is no different. He’s pretty good at high jump, as the revolutionary Fosbury Flop technique originated in Ketchum, Idaho. 

Idaho has a mark on his body that aligns with the Snake River, which is the river that carved out Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. 

It is deeper than the Grand Canyon, which made Idaho’s mark darker than the one Arizona has for the Colorado River.

He and his governor are constantly at odds with each other, as seen in Table News: Governor’s Day Out. Though, it’s more like Idaho enjoys toying with him than an equal exchange, and he’s been like this for most of his governors. He doesn’t really remember why he started doing this, but Idaho just finds it amusing.

Carolina's Journal Log 9:

Rosedawn and I slept in a bit today, though we were up and at 'em quite quickly. We hadn't yet gone to Golden Hills Valley, so that was our first stop of the day. I'm curious whether it still looks like it's eternally autumn, or if it turned wintry. Or just cold autumn? As we turned down the path towards Golden Hills Valley, Silverglade Castle loomed in the distance. I bet that it was specifically built on that hill for the visibility.

As we continued along the path, we spotted the castle perched in the Valley's mountains in the distance. I wonder if the road to it will be cleared in the near future. What I wouldn't give to get to check out an ancient castle! Nevertheless, we warily made our way down the still somewhat icy slope to the Riding Arena, where some riding groups were still practicing, despite the cold. Takes a lot of dedication.

Only about an hour and a half after waking up, we were in Golden Hills Valley. It was coated in snow, but it was easy to still see the golds, oranges, and reds that were the signature of autumn, and of Golden Hills Valley, peeking out from beneath the snow. Jasper's pumpkins were similarly covered in snow, and he seemed to be staying inside. Passing under the bridge, we trotted briefly through Goldenleaf Forest.

Over the river and through the wood, straight into a bush, we go. Perhaps we ought to have checked for bushes before jumping over that stone wall. We were both perfectly fine, mostly just snow-covered with a few renegade leaves here and there. After we got ourselves back to looking presentable, we headed up the mountain, plowing a path through the snow that continues to reach up to Rosedawn's knees.

Heading up to one of the entrances to the Light Ride trail, we passed a couple of wolves out and about. Thankfully, these wolves and I are on good terms. Instead of heading through Aideen's Whisper, we headed across the old bridge by the castle. It's even more breathtaking up close.

Rounding the bend and heading back down, we continued towards Cape West Fishing Village while enjoying the crisp air of the mountains. We hadn't seen very many critters besides the wolves, so maybe they're just holed up until things get a little warmer. Though, judging by the forecasted weather, that's not happening anytime soon.

We finally made it down to the village and walked around for a while. We struck up a few conversations, and Mr. K. Trout seems to be taking advantage of the colder weather, with it apparently bringing some expensive fish up to the surface. Instead of heading back to Silverglade, or even to Fort Pinta, Redwood Point, or the Winter Village, we opted to spend the rest of the day just relaxing. Carin and I struck up a deal for the two of us to stay for the night while helping out a bit, and of course for some shillings. I think I'll check if those berries I found earlier are poisonous or not. Probably not via experimentation, though.

I turn to see a stag bounding through the forest and know that child will be named 'Deer-Running-Swiftly'. I see a bear catch a trout leaping from a stream and understand that child shall be named 'Clever-Bear-Waits-For-Fish'. Tell me, Coyote-In-Heat-Under-A-Bush, why do you ask?'."

Jasper snorted and began coughing and gagging as his drink came out his nose, causing everyone else to devolve in hysterics.

Are the Rocks Crying Out? – Godspacelight

1.3K by Catherine Lawton When I was a young child growing up in small towns, my preacher dad would take breaks from ministry pressures by going fishing. My sister and I happily followed him down trout streams as he sought the perfect fishing hole. We jumped from boulder to boulder or waded in the clear, cold water and delighted in discovering colorful, shiny rocks on the creek bottom. I saved some pretty pebbles and was disappointed when they dried and lost their shine. But a few came home in my pocket, nevertheless. Now, my children and grandchildren know I’m likely to pick up rocks anywhere I go. I examine special ones that catch my eye as I dig in the garden, walk in the neighborhood, hike in the mountains, and comb the beaches. I’m likely to have rocks in my pockets as well as a few rocks in the car, interesting rocks lining shelves and filling jars and boxes here and there in my home. 

Microphotograph of design in a rock A few years ago, my son gave me a rock tumbler for Christmas. Then I felt more like a serious collector. When my first batch of stones came out of the tumbling process smooth, glowing, and glassy—much like the creek-bottom pebbles of my childhood—I was hooked on collecting, learning about, creating with, and even meditating on rocks. 

A few of my favorites I have learned more about rocks in the process, and my children and grandchildren admire the polished rocks with me. Sometimes we look for pictures in their designs. I’ve even made a few Christmas gifts with polished stones.

Here I am searching (in a relaxed way at the time) for the semi-precious stones on Agate Beach at Patrick’s Point State Park in Northern California. Looking for agates on the beach is what it’s like for me, as a poet, to be present to the thoughts, emotions, winds, and waves of gritty life… to dig into my heart at the moment and find metaphors that seem to reveal themselves to me: reflecting light, shaped by experiences and observations, by forces of the environment, by the workings of Love Rocks appeal to us for many reasons: - The joy of discovering treasures. - Rocks tell a story, often an ancient story, about where they have come from where we have come from, and where we are headed. And we sing, “On Christ, the solid rock I stand.”  - Rocks feel solid and permanent when so much in life and in the world is fleeting and fragile. One of the prayers attributed to St. Patrick begins, “I arise today through the strength of heaven; the light of the sun, the splendor of fire, speed of lightning, swiftness of the wind, depth of the sea, stability of the earth, firmness of the rock….” Similarly, the prophet Isaiah exclaimed, “He will be the stability of your times” (Is. 33:6). - Rocks remind us of things hidden. We try to clear our vegetable garden of rocks, but every spring we find more rocks that have worked their way up from the deep. Small rocks seem to appear out of nowhere, but they remind me that rock makes up much of our earth’s outer layers, and rocks have a constant cycle of breaking down and being re-formed. - Rocks can speak to us. Even as a child, the famed Jesuit geologist and mystic theologian, Teilhard de Chardin delighted in the hardness and stability of translucent and glittering stones. He later wrote and taught how to see God everywhere, to “see him in all that is most hidden, most solid, and most ultimate in the world” (from Teilhard’s The Divine Milieu).  - Rocks preserve, encapsulate, and speak of history (for instance, fossilized rocks, moss agates, picture rocks, volcanic rocks, and precious gems). - Rocks are sometimes symbols of difficulties and trials. We might say, “I’ve been traveling a rocky road lately.” But rocks can remind us that while constant change is a given in nature and in our lives, God who is everywhere, including in the cycles and changes of seasons, is also unchanging in essence. God’s love will always endure and keep rising getting our attention and sending us reminders. Though God’s loving reminders may sometimes feel like obstacles when we want an easy path … If we give heed, the very rocks in our path will speak and have the potential to help form us. Beautiful rocks and fine gemstones were formed by extreme pressures over long periods of time. These gems uniquely encapsulate the effects of pressures and changes in the formation of our earth home. Examine the depth and design of many stones and you’ll see exemplified the beauty and creativity of God.

We respond to heart-shaped rocks found along our way as if they are valentines placed by God for us to discover. September 17 is “Collect Rocks Day.” So, take a walk and look for Beauty in beautiful rocks, Stability in solid, hard rocks, and Creativity in interesting rocks, and maybe even listen to what the rocks might say if you could hear them “crying out.”

The Scullcrusher Night Riders gang/SCCNR Gang or “the gang bang” Smokey playfully refers is a gang that Vince and Aubrey’s dad Baratheon “Dean” “Theo”Trout made along with his childhood friends to protect their districts and kick some ass if anyone says anything.

Their gang colors are, black, red, and gray.

Baratheon “Dean” Trout: when he was alive, he was the commander. 6’7 and has the same hairstyle as his son Aubrey, is a kistune like creature hybrid, he owned a mechanic shop that Aubrey and Vince’s cousin Sandy owns now, he was known as the Angel of Death to rival gangs do to the fact that he brutally beat someone to death because someone hurt his wife. He and his wife went missing and his body along with his wife were found on new years, when the police found his body; the only injuries they found were a stab wound in his chest and some rope burns also later on they discovered aphrodisiac in his bloodstream as well as some sperm left over, police were trying to track (redacted) and (redacted) but Vince and a case of suicide already beat them to it, when his death came on the news it broke everyone’s heart because he always made a positive impact with people around him and you could be the rudest person and he would look at you and somehow make you smile, he really liked his middle name so he would introduce his name as Dean however if your really close to him he would tell you his real name, it doesn’t matter which of names and nicknames you choose to call him.

Vicky Harvey: Vicky is a 6’0 tall purple eyed beauty who is a curvy but muscular plus sized woman who is friendly but can be really intimidating when she needs to be, she has ginger curly hair and has a beauty mark by her mouth and a cross mark her right cheek. She is also in a polyamorous relationship with her husbands Smokey and Fritz, she also is a hybrid between a vampire and a human (her fangs are really sharp and has a strong jaw). Her strength is like Dean’s son Aubrey. (She’s hella strong). She has sharp nails that she uses as a weapon and they are able to quickly regenerate if damaged. Smokey stated that she is the main nurse of the gang and if you did something really stupid to get hurt, depending on your condition she will smack the back off your head and scolds at you for doing something stupid that caused you to get hurt and then comfort you like a worried mom.

Fritzzarolli “Fritz” Ansalong: He is the new commander and the husband of Vicky and Smokey, he is a 6’7 man with purple hair in a mullet style, green eyes and shark teeth as well as a red tied up head band, he’s a brute but a kind and loyal leader, he is a hybrid of a Ukrainian witch and a unknown monster, in battle his famous move is where he jumps and gives a strong kick nearly killing his opponent, if he doesn’t know you and you hug him prepared for broken rib’s because he thought you were going to attack him (he also sometimes dose it for fun 😅), loves chocolate pudding, has a kink for collars and leashes.

Several papers report that the head of Sweden's new right-wing government, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will be visiting Finland on Friday, on his first official visit abroad.

Kristersson is set to hold talks with both Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) and President Sauli Niinistö, according to newspaper Ilkka-Pohjalainen (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IP).

Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun)reports that the the main topics of the discussion will include bilateral cooperation, the two countries' joint Nato membership application and the war in Ukraine.

The first visit is part of a mutual tradition, according to which the premiers of Finland and Sweden meet soon after they start their new jobs. Kristersson became PM last week, the papers note. 

Demolition dam

Finnish actor and entrepreneur Jasper Pääkkönen participated in a wildlife restoration project this week, that has helped improve the condition of salmon stocks, South-Karelia-based paper Etelä-Saimaa (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (ES) reports.

Ever since three power plants were built around the southeastern river area of Hiitolanjoki roughly a century ago, the endangered freshwater salmon native to the area had been prevented from swimming upstream to spawn in the waters. 

Pääkkönen was one of the contributors to fund the demolition of the largest of the three dams built at the old power plant site, according to the paper.

The actor said he could see the fish populations claim back the waters again after the demolition on Wednesday.

"People think that it takes years to get results. But here the dam was demolished, and snap! Fish that hadn't been here for a hundred years immediately appeared. The destruction caused by humans can be repaired," Pääkkönen noted.

The numbers of wild lake trout and lake salmon populations are very low in Finland, according to WWF Programme Director Sampsa Vilhunen. He told ES that the majority of migratory native fish populations have plummeted in Finland due to human activity, and the nearly lost stocks have been maintained artificially.

"Now we realise that the cost is too high. For example, reviving stocks and preserving species in fish farms is not a permanent solution. The only viable way is to dismantle the dams and let the fish reproduce on their own," Vilhunen said, adding that "all unnecessary dams must be removed in Finland, that is WWF's position and goal."

An extra hour of Sunday

Finland will be moving its clocks back to winter time on Sunday, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IS) reports, granting people a perceived extra hour this weekend. 

However, despite the extra rest people may be afforded, the sun will also start setting an hour earlier every day, as well.

Clocks are to be moved back by one hour at 4 am on Sunday 30 October. 

If everything had gone according to plan, however, 31 October 2021 would have marked the last time the EU switched from summer to winter time, IS notes.

The European Commission's proposal of waiving the time switch in 2018 garnered a great deal of support, but the matter has not progressed among EU decision-makers. 

One of the culprits behind the delay was the Covid pandemic, according to the paper.

Finland has used the twice-a-year clock changes involved in the daylight saving scheme since 1981.
