I'm bored at work so here's what I think the gang members smell like. I've made a post before asking what y'all thought, so here's what I think.
Javier Escuella- cigarettes and cheap cologne
John Marston- BO and actual human feces. Man is rank
Arthur Morgan- I feel like he's one of the members that bathes more frequently than not, but he still got a touch of BO to him
Charles Smith- man hunts a lot, so he probably smells like dirt and animal shit. Earthy
Dutch van der Linde- perfume. Flowery perfume.
Hosea Matthews- expensive Cologne. (He steals it)
Bill Williamson- actual human feces and BO (same as John)
Lenny Summers- like Arthur, he bathes more frequently but he does still have some BO to him. Maybe some cheap Cologne too
Kieran Duffy- it's canon that he smells like horse shit
Sean MacGuire- Booze and bile. He tries to cover it up w cheap Cologne that he "borrows" from Lenny, but it just makes it worse
Micah Bell- BO. Man is probably hella sweaty. Some of Dutch's perfume lingers on him sometimes after he gets done being the cocksucking, dick rider he is
Josiah Trelawny- the inside of a bath & bodyworks
Leopold Strauss- BO masked (poorly) by cheap cologne
Simon Pearson- he's a chef, so he probably smells like rotting meat and BO (man looks sweaty as hell. Love him tho)
Uncle- do I even have to say it? Booze and vomit and shit and BO. You can smell him from a mile away, and it will burn your nose hairs
All of the ladies (and jack) keep themselves clean and smelling good.
Sadie probably uses cheap Cologne instead of perfume though

Valentine’s Day with the Gang (RDR2)
Your favorite member brings you out on a special Valentine’s day date! Characters: Arthur, Charles, Josiah, John, Hosea, Dutch Warnings: NSFW themes AO3 Link Arthur - Arthur says he doesn’t believe in cheesy holidays like Valentine’s day - Leading up to the holiday he acts completely uninterested and won’t talk about it unless you bring it up - “Well… If you really wanna do somethin’ I guess we can,” He says reluctantly - However, Arthur is a secret hopeless romantic. Even though he acts this way he’s planning a special Valentine’s day for you the whole entire time!
- A nice gift he TOTALLY DIDN’T STEAL! Usually jewelry, a clothing item, or a little trinket that he thinks you would like. - Arthur also loves giving you fancy hairpins, he thinks they look cute on you - Alcohol in a unique/beautiful bottle. Think strawberry wine in a heart shaped bottle. Something like this. - Finger sandwiches… He LOVES an excuse to buy finger sandwiches. They are so tiny and he likes to 🤏  BUT he needs an excuse to buy them. A big outlaw like him can’t just go and buy little tea sandwiches for no reason. Well… Valentine’s day is the reason. - Once everything is prepared Arthur takes you to a place he found while riding around on missions. He’ll never tell you, but for 3 months he took note of every beautiful spot he could find that he thought you might like, slowly narrowing it down to a special place - He makes sure it’s in a place that’s pretty warm this time of year and spreads out a nice big blanket then plates everything neatly. - A romantic picnic! - Well…. He hopes you find it romantic. Because he sure does… - Arthur is kind of afraid that you might think his gifts are shallow or not considerate so he draws pictures for you - I mean /really/ draws. He spends HOURS trying to draw something perfect. If your horse is very special to you he will draw breathtaking pictures of your horse. If you have pets he’ll draw those pets stunningly. Or if there is a specific kind of landscape you love, like the mountains or the ocean, that will be captured wonderfully on paper. - He draws it on nice expensive paper too so you can frame it and use it as decor if you wish - Arthur is always very VERY shy when handing you this drawing even if he does this every Valentine’s day. He’s worried you won’t like it. - After you two eat and drink your wine he cuddles with you until it starts to get dark. Then he invites you on a romantic ride as the sun sets… to the hotel of course - Because after those little sandwiches Arthur feels frisky, and he LOVES having you as dessert - Believe me when I say this man will probably keep making you cum until you beg him to stop. ---- Charles - I genuinely don’t think Charles knows what to do on Valentine’s day - He’s never had a Valentine’s day before so this is all new for him - He hears about other couples exchanging chocolate or going out on nice dinners but he doesn’t feel as if that suits you two as a couple. If he brought you to dinner in Saint Denis that would probably be very weird. - Charles also doesn’t believe in frivolous gifts. If he gives you something it needs to be very personal and from the heart. - Because of this he decides to give you something handmade. Charles spends several months perfecting his wittling skills. - The end result is better than expected! He carves out a careful representation of your absolute favorite animal. He hopes you carry it with you everywhere you go to remember him by. It’s like a good luck charm - He asks Arthur and John what they’re doing for Valentine’s day while trying to make plans. He still doesn’t really know what to do. - Eventually he does choose to go the dinner route. Deciding to cook for you he searches/hunts for fresh ingredients and buys everything else he couldn’t find, storing them safely in his satchel before. riding back to camp to pick you up for your date - But first, the day starts lazy when you two wake up. He snuggles you, kisses you good morning and brings you coffee and breakfast in bed before he announces he’s ‘going to run some errands’ (this is when he goes to get the ingredients) - Late noon he returns and takes you out on a nice ride to an area full of active wildlife. -The day is filled with a wonderful nature walk. You each pick flowers to put into each other’s hair and talk or tell stories. - Charles sets up a nice camp for you both. He made sure to bring his favorite pelts for you to lounge on in front of the fire as he makes you dinner. - I think it’s important to include that he went and purchased your favorite baked goods for you to have as dessert. Charles didn’t think he could make a better dessert on his own and didn’t want to disappoint you. He only buys enough for you and none for himself, though he’s not opposed to sharing if you suggest it. - The night is spent with a great meal, wonderful company, and passionate love making. It ends with you laying on his chest as he draws circles on your skin. You both look up at the stars and tell stories or talk about the future, dreaming of all you could have. ----- Trelawny - Oh he’s soooo traditional! He’ll drop a nice dress or suit off for you to change into before returning with a stage coach, a large bouquet of roses, and of course chocolate. - “You look stunning mon amour…. That’s French by the way.” He purrs, kissing your hand as he helps you into the stage. - Fine dining has been arranged for you on this evening. Taking place on a high terrace overlooking the best view in all of Saint Denis. - He lets you order whatever you want. Steak? Lobster? Dessert? All yours! Eat your heart out!!! - Of course he orders caviar for the table and the most expensive wine they offer. - During dinner there’s live music and even a firework show! You watch the colors explode in the sky, shining over the ocean waves. It’s very very romantic~ - “I know I’ve been gone for a long time, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought of you. Here- I picked this up for you in a far away place called Blackwater.” He says, sliding a satin box across the table. Inside is a stunning necklace. Gold with a set sapphire. - After dinner he takes you for a walk. Telling you grand stories about his adventures. At one point he starts serenading you, dancing with you in the street. Oh it’s wonderful~ He twirls you around lampposts and picks a flower from the gardens to stick in your hair. - Once the night comes to an end he books a luxury room at the finest hotel in the city where you two get a little frisky before turning in for the night ------ John - His ass FORGETS it’s Valentines day - “Why’re you all dolled up?” After you glare at him and he realizes he’s forgetting something important he starts sweating. “Is it your birthday today or our anniversary?” - Once he figures out what day it is he’ll run out and get you flowers. - Then he’ll let you pick a local restaurant. But nothing too fancy, he didn’t make any reservations so he doubted either of you could get in a nice restaurant. - I’m gonna be honest, your Valentines Day with him isn’t great. He makes it up to you for the next two weeks. He’ll bring you chocolate and flowers almost every day, practically begging for you to forgive him. He even books a nice dinner and actually takes a bath for once. - Then of course he holds you in bed at night asking with those puppy eyes of his “Are you still mad at me, my sweet?” - The best thing about it is you can keep bringing up Valentine’s day during any arguments and he’ll immediately drop everything to take you on an apology date, even if this is your 50th apology date. - He does feel really bad about it. But he continues to forget important days. It just doesn’t cross his little squirrel brain half the time ---- Hosea - Oh he’s been planning this night for weeks! - Hosea has a new spiffy outfit he’s excited to wear just for you~ - Upon picking you up you notice right away not only does he look like a hundred bucks, but he bathed and applied expensive cologne. - “You look more ethereal than any god/goddess known to mankind, my love.” He compliments you, pressing a sweet kiss to your lips before helping you up onto a wagon - The evening starts off with you two getting ice cream and walking around town, talking while watching the sunset. - He then brings you to the theater to watch a show. He bought advanced tickets and reserved your favorite seats - The whole show, Hosea has his arm over your shoulders or is holding you. When something funny happens he laughs and looks to see what your reaction is. He’s just trying to make sure you’re enjoying yourself. - Once the show is over he takes you behind a nice restaurant, picking up food he had requested to-go. “I’m sorry if you rather eat inside, my dove. I thought it would be nice to do something a little different.” He explains, bringing you to a beautiful garden with a picnic table already covered with a table cloth and candles. - “What’s a romantic dinner without champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for my sweetheart?” He pulls a picnic basket out from the bushes after you two settled in to eat. He must’ve spent a lot of time setting this up for you in advance! - After a very sweet dinner where you two laughed about the past and discussed how you hope your relationship grows in the future, he finally slides forth a beautifully decorated present. “Open it.” He smiled wide, seeming giddy with excitement. - As you unwrap it you realize it’s your favorite book. You might be confused at first, but once you open the cover you realize it was signed by the author. This was a very rare copy, extremely hard to get and not to mention expensive.  “I know it’s not much. I thought jewelry might be too cheesy for you, I didn’t want you to think all of my gifts are obtained by immoral means.” Hosea gives you a knowing wink. “Yet I still wanted to gift you a token of my love.” -------- Dutch - You will be woken up by a hearty “Good morning my darling.” A cup of tea or coffee pushed into your hands and your face peppered with kisses. - The day starts off with a nice breakfast in bed, then a bit of sex followed by an afternoon nap. - Once Dutch is nice and rested after your nefarious activities, he washes up and puts on a nice outfit. Similar to Hosea, this is when Dutch wears his nice cologne. - “We’re going dancin’!” He exclaims, making sure you wear the right shoes with your outfit. - He lets you ride in front of him on The Count and once you both arrive in the city he’ll wave down a stage coach to take you rest of the way - The place he bought tickets for you to dance is beautiful! A huge building that looks very European and fairy-tale like on the inside. Many rich people are in attendance since it’s a Valentine’s day ball. - Dutch immediately hands you a glass of champagne before sauntering off to speak with the wealthy for half the night, leaving you alone. - “Oh, come on now. You know we need money.” He whispers to you upon return, gently pulling you against him, arms around your waist. - After this you two finally dance, and honestly it’s a lot of fun! Dutch is very attentive and isn’t shy about kissing you or getting a bit handsy with you in public. - Once you two are danced-out he takes you to a nice restaurant. It turns out he doesn’t have a reservation so he had you pretend to use the powder room so you can sneak a peek at the guest list. You give him the name ‘Dylan Freeman’ and Dutch approaches the waitstaff posing as that man. - You two have a very lovely dinner, on Dylan Freeman’s tab of course! Dutch orders you both the most expensive things off the menu. - After two hours you both are a little drunk off of $100 imported wine when Dylan Freeman shows up. Dutch notices the waitstaff point your way and he grabs your hand. “My sweet, I’m afraid it’s time for us to run.” You both make a mad dash through the busy kitchen and out the back door, running down the alley while giggling. - “A romantic getaway to end a romantic night!” Dutch muses with satisfaction while you two sit by the dock, staring up at the moon and stars. This is when he pulls out a small box. “Go on.” There’s a glimmer in his eye as you look at what's inside. It’s a queen chess piece. “This is who you are to me. To the gang. We couldn’t do this without you.” He leans down, giving you a deep kiss.

North To The Future [Chapter 4: Semi-Charmed Life]
Tumblr media
The year is 1999. You are just beginning your veterinary practice in Juneau, Alaska. Aegon is a mysterious, troubled newcomer to town. You kind of hate him. You are also kind of obsessed with him. Falling for him might legitimately ruin your life…but can you help it? Oh, and there’s a serial killer on the loose known only as the Ice Fisher.
Chapter warnings: Language, alcoholism, addiction, murder, veterinary medicine, delicious Thanksgiving nomz, ANGST and let me repeat that last one in case you missed it ANGSTTTTTTTTT!!!
Word count: 5k.
Link to chapter list (and all my writing): HERE.
Taglist: @elsolario @meadowofsinfulthoughts @ladylannisterxo @doingfondue @tclegane @quartzs-posts @liathelioness @aemcndtargaryen @thelittleswanao3 @burningcoffeetimetravel @b1gb3anz @hinata7346 @poohxlove @borikenlove @myspotofcraziness @travelingmypassion @graykageyama @skythighs @lauraneedstochill @darlingimafangirl @charenlie @thewew @eddies-bat-tattoos @minttea07
Please let me know if you’d like to be added to the taglist! 💜
Here’s the thing about the Ice Fisher: he doesn’t have a type. Ted Bundy liked girls and young women. John Wayne Gacy liked boys and young men. Juan Corona liked farm laborers, Belle Gunness liked suitors who answered the marriage ads she placed in Chicago newspapers, Robert Hansen liked sex workers who he would set loose in the Alaskan wilderness and then hunt down with his Ruger Mini-14. Everyone has their preferences. But not the Ice Fisher.
The first victim was a burly mid-fifties logger and recreational hunter named Josiah Wolfenstein. The second was nineteen-year-old college student Tammy Miller; she was from Sitka and studying psychology, a choice that now strikes you as ironic. The third and most recent victim was Carol Philips: forty-three, Garth Brooks superfan, amateur baker, and beloved soccer mom. They have nothing in common except for their manner of death. They reveal no pattern. They shed no light on who the Ice Fisher is targeting, and conversely who can consider themselves safe. Everyone is a potential victim. And there is no such thing as safe.
In between veterinary appointments, you watch the local news coverage on the grainy tv in the clinic lobby, your arms crossed instinctively over your chest, your face grim.
“You want some bear mace?” Jennifer says, showing you a small black cannister attached to a keychain. “My boyfriend buys a new one for me every time someone gets murdered, so now I have extra.”
You take it tentatively. “Bear mace?”
“Yeah, but it works on people too. It has a 30-foot range. You can spray that Greek guy with it.”
You laugh and clip the bear mace to your purse: a Coach patchwork saddle bag that your parents bought you a few Christmases ago. “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.”
Chief of Police Eugene Baker, a high school classmate of your parents, is holding a press conference on the television screen. “We believe this killer to be an adult male with considerable physical strength and knowledge of the outdoors. While the first two victims were found in Dredge Lake, Ms. Philips’ remains were recovered from nearby Crystal Lake, complicating the investigation. Police are patrolling the Tongass National Forest, but we simply do not have the manpower to surveille all Juneau-area lakes at all times. We therefore will continue to ask for the public’s cooperation in submitting tips and identifying possible suspects. To this end, we have set up an anonymous 24/7 hotline staffed by volunteers; the phone number is displayed at the bottom of your screen. We advise all Juneau residents to stay vigilant, particularly around strangers, and avoid leaving their homes alone after dark…”
Outside in the violet-and-amber afternoon light, there is the sound of tires slipping on ice. Aegon’s 1985 Chevy Nova drifts sideways into a parking spot; or, rather, into a position improbably straddling three separate parking spots. He and Sunfyre exit the vehicle.
“Oh, great,” Jen grumbles. She hides behind the reception desk so she won’t have to interact with Aegon. She busies herself with cutting pieces of paper into snowflakes, impaling them with paperclips, and arranging them on the miniature Christmas tree that you obtained for the clinic.
“Hey!” Aegon announces merrily as he breezes inside. He is dressed in his light-wash Levis, black Converses, and an oversized pale green sweater with holes in it; the white of the T-shirt he has on underneath shines through the gaps like stars. Overtop he has thrown the black parka you gave him, unzipped and peppered with melting snowflakes. Half of his hair is pulled back in a messy bun. Sunfyre—still wearing his cone of shame—trots along beside him, unleashed.
“Hey,” you return, smiling. “You’re early.”
“We weren’t catching anything, there was an orca pod in the bay this morning and it scared most of the fish off. So we docked the boat after lunch.” His spots the new addition to your purse. “What’s up with that?”
“It’s bear mace. For bears…or serial killers…or you. I haven’t decided which yet. What’s up with your hair?”
“It’s a man bun,” he says, somewhat defensive. “They’re very popular in Southern California.”
“That sounds fictional.”
“I’ll have you know that in the acclaimed feature film Mulan, love interest and all-around badass General Li Shang had a man bun.”
“Literally fictional.”
“Are you going to take the stitches out of my dog’s face or are you just going to mercilessly bully me? I’m very sensitive, you know. As an Aquarius, I hide this beneath a thin veneer of rebellious behavior and inability to commit, but at my heart I am a profoundly fragile man. I’m forever just a few seconds away from disaster. I’m a Christmas ornament in the unsteady hands of a five-year-old high on the jittery, saccharine rush of Kool-Aid.”
“Tropical Punch?”
“Cherry. But knowing you, every cup would have to be a brand new flavor.”
You’re still smiling; you haven’t stopped since he walked in. Aegon smiles back. Jen peeks over the top of the reception desk with wide, curious eyes. Sunfyre whines and scratches at his cone, as if to remind everyone about the true purpose of this visit.
“Bring the beast,” you say, leading Aegon back into the exam room. He scoops up Sunfyre with a grunt and places him on top of the table; the dog’s nails click against the cool, reflective metal surface. You liberate Sunfyre from his cone, then numb his muzzle with lidocaine and remove the stitches one at a time, snipping them with surgical scissors and then pulling them out of the flesh with tweezers. Aegon watches you with his hands in his parka pockets, his expression strangely vacant.
“He’ll have a scar, won’t he?”
“Yes, a small one. But that will just make him more rugged and attractive to all the lady-dogs. Or gentleman-dogs, whatever Sunfyre is into.”
“A scar on his face,” Aegon murmurs, then shakes his pensiveness away. “What should I bring to Thanksgiving?”
“Probably nothing. I think my parents have it covered…the appetizers, the dinner, the desserts…and also, you do not strike me as someone who cooks.”
“Yeah, I eat a lot of Lunchables. But I feel like I should bring something.”
Your eyes flick to his, playful. “Are you worried about making a good first impression?”
Aegon smirks, shrugs, says nothing. Sometimes you make an appearance at Ursa Minor, sometimes you don’t; sometimes you pick up when he calls, sometimes you end up spending hours in his apartment watching the X-Files or Law & Order or 60 Minutes. Other times, you fill your time with work, family, friends, flipping through the tower of travel magazines you have stacked beside your bed. It’s not that you’re ignoring Aegon. It’s that you’re trying to figure out what being with him would be like: what you would gain, what it would cost. He hasn’t tried to touch you since that night under the Northern Lights. You haven’t tried to pry into his many mysteries. But each unanswered question is like a landmine one careless step away from eruption, and they’re filling up that space that stays between you on his threadbare floral couch. At this precise moment, Aegon seems sober, which is highly unusual. There’s something quiet and boyish about him when he’s like this, something almost vulnerable. You can picture him wandering aimlessly through the Foodland, staring at mounds of Idaho potatoes and cans of gooey apple pie filling, having no idea what to do with any of it.
“My mom really likes flowers,” you say. “And obviously she doesn’t get to see them a lot this time of year. So if you want to bring something, bring flowers.”
“Okay. Deal.”
“No rum and Cokes today?” you ask, still removing stitches with sure, deft hands.
“Not yet. But I’m counting the seconds until we’re done here, believe me.”
You recall what he told you as you sat together in Ursa Minor under Christmas lights and strands of shimmering silver tinsel: I don’t do well when I’m sober. You pull out the last stitch and pet Sunfyre’s soft fluffy head. He pants happily, his tail thumping against the table, his trusting dark eyes gazing up at you, tiny starless universes. “Why did you buy the Nova if you’re almost always too drunk to drive it?”
“So I can take Sunfyre up to the woods on nice days. He loves the trails.”
“Um, I don’t think you should be hiking out there alone.”
“Relax. Killers never get the people who deserve it.” Aegon flashes you grin, digs around in his parka pocket, tosses you a gold key that you catch in fumbling, cupped palms. “Here.”
“What is this?”
“It’s a spare. Just in case you ever want to stop by and hang out with my dog. Or, you know. Me.”
You gawk at the key, at Aegon, back to the key. “You’re giving me a…? Why would…? How…?”
“Just so you know it’s an option,” Aegon says. He lifts Sunfyre down from the exam table and leaves like the sun at dusk.
~~~~~~~~~~
You love waking up at home on holiday mornings. There is the noise of clanging pots and pans, the scents of bacon and pancakes and rising Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, the sound of one of your dad’s rock albums spinning on the record player in the living room. Today, his Thanksgiving preparation background music is Third Eye Blind; you bound down the stairs as Semi-Charmed Life drifts through the house. After a swift breakfast—your mom has already set out a plate for you, along with a glass of ice-cold orange juice and a Flintstones multivitamin—the real work begins.
The turkey is slathered with butter and herbs and placed in the oven. The neck and giblets are boiled to make stock for gravy, and then you set them aside for Sunfyre. The rolls are baked, the potatoes are mashed, the yams are smothered with brown sugar and marshmallows, the green bean casserole is topped with French’s fried onions, the stuffing is Stove Top out of the box, the cranberry sauce retains the precise shape of the aluminum can it was jiggled out of. Once you and your dad have finished setting the table, you tell him you’re heading out to pick up the mysterious friend who will be joining you for dinner.
“Your friend doesn’t have a car?” your dad asks, not critical or suspicious, merely intrigued. You have been uncharacteristically cagey about this particular friend, and with good reason. You know practically nothing besides what your parents have already surmised: male, probably single, inopportunely sexy.
“No, he does. I just told him that I’d give him a ride.” In case he gets too hammered to drive himself home, which is almost a certainty.
“Okay, ladybug,” your dad says, folding the red cloth napkins into inelegant triangles, his scruffy grey eyebrows knitted together. “Whatever floats your boat.”
When you knock on Aegon’s apartment door, he appears dressed in his most festive attire: a blue Hawaiian shirt, black jeans, combat boots, a gold chain around his neck, his white-blond hair neat and mostly straight. He is holding a bouquet of roses that have been dyed a deep sapphire color, like the ocean, like biting winter cold.
“Wow,” you say. “You look like Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo + Juliet.”
“I hope I get a happier ending.” He calls Sunfyre over. The golden retriever pads into view. He is wearing a meticulously groomed coat of fur and a blue bowtie to match Aegon’s shirt.
“Hey, buddy!” you squeal in delight, squatting down to scratch Sunfyre’s ears and cover his scarred muzzle with quick smacking kisses. “You are going to be so psyched when you see what we have for you. There’s a nice turkey neck…and a heart, and a liver…and a delicious gizzard…and maybe even some nice juicy kidneys…and I’ll slice it up all up for you into easily chewable little bites…”
“Calm down, Appletini,” Aegon says, grabbing his parka. “You wouldn’t want anyone thinking you’re the Ice Fisher.”
Back at your parents’ house, your mom and dad dash to the door to meet your enigmatic friend, clamoring like teenage girls at an Enrique Iglesias concert. Aegon beams and shakes their hands, thanking them graciously for the invitation. Your dad shoots you a furtive grin: This friend IS sexy! Sunfyre presents himself for pats and high-pitched coos of adoration.
“I’m Vince, and this is my wife Debbie,” your dad says. “But you can call us Mom and Dad, that’ll make things less confusing. That’s what most of my daughter’s friends do.”
“That is so totally cool of you. I’m Aegon.”
“Aegon?!” your mom blurts out before she can stop herself.
He sighs. “It’s Greek.”
“Oh, how exotic!” she recovers tactfully, then gasps when he hands her the bouquet. “For me?!”
“It’s the absolute least I could do. I hope you like roses. The options at the Foodland were roses, roses, or…let me think…oh yeah, more roses.”
“They’re lovely,” your mom purrs. “And such a unique color!”
“They reminded me of Alaska, all the ocean, and ice, and big open sky…and also Appletini. Because I always give her the blue mug.”
Your parents blink at him, confounded. “…Appletini?” your dad ventures, smiling.
“It’s a long story,” you say, suddenly shy.
“Well, come on in,” your mom courteously deflects. “There are deviled eggs, salmon dip, Ritz crackers, and pigs in a blanket just waiting to be eaten.”
As your mom and dad bang around the kitchen putting the final touches on dinner, you and Aegon assemble your appetizer plates and loiter in the dining room, nibbling and chatting, bathed in the flickering golden light of the woodstove and humming along to the red Third Eye Blind vinyl that is still rotating on the record player like a bloody planet. There are three unopened bottles of wine on the table. Aegon keeps glancing at them, his eyes gleaming and famished.
“Would you like a tour of the house?” you say. “An authentic Alaskan house? Come March you’ll probably never have this opportunity again. You’ll be jet-setting off to some other far-flung destination, probably somewhere warm where they have plentiful Taco Bells and internet.”
“I’m not a fan of the internet,” Aegon replies, piling a Ritz cracker worryingly high with salmon dip. “But Taco Bells are a must. Yes, lead the way, oh wise and prophetic Madame Appletini.”
You show him the kitchen where your parents are laboring (floral wallpaper), the study (more floral wallpaper), the living room (wood paneling), and the backyard (adorned with a salt lick for the friendly neighborhood cow moose). Then you take Aegon upstairs to your bedroom. He ponders the details for a nerve-rackingly long time as he gnaws on slightly-too-crispy pigs in a blanket: your stack of travel magazines, your veterinary books, your dark blue bedding, the photographs taped to your mirror, the plethora of posters tacked to your walls.
Aegon speaks without looking at you, still investigating. “Has Trent ever gotten to enjoy your extensive collection of Ricky Martin posters?”
“Not yet. Preferably not ever.”
Now Aegon turns to you; he is smiling. “I feel so sorry for him.”
“Dinner’s ready, kids!” your dad shouts up the stairs, and you obediently report to the table to eat until you are in agony, which to your understanding is the primary objective of Thanksgiving.
“Drinks?” you mom inquires as she lights the tall red candles. The blue roses are in a vase at the center of the table. “There’s Tang, and Snapple, and water of course, and Pinot Noir. Martha Stewart says that’s the best wine to pair with turkey.”
“Wine, please,” Aegon says. She fills his glass. It vanishes almost immediately.
Aegon is the perfect guest: he samples everything and offers enthusiastic compliments, even when he is clearly horrified (as he is by the green bean casserole): “The turkey is so moist and flavorful!” “The yams are like dessert!” “It’s so fun to poke this cranberry sauce!” “My, what a creative use of cream of mushroom soup!” Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Sunfyre feasts on a plate of turkey organs and a few slices of white meat. You have a glass of wine, and so does your dad; your mom has two; you lose count of Aegon’s glasses after four. He becomes increasingly uncoordinated, giggly, fogged like a window. Your parents do not encourage him to drink, but they don’t try to stop him either; they ignore his drunkenness like a ghost that stands in the corner of the room, silent, waiting, set ablaze by firelight.
“Do I detect a British accent?” your dad asks Aegon pleasantly. “So this must be a new experience for you. Did you grow up abroad?”
“I grew up everywhere.” Aegon smirks evasively, swigging his wine. “And yes, my exposure to Thanksgiving is extremely limited. But I like this. I like this a lot. I’m going to have to do it every year, wherever I am. Sunfyre will rebel if I don’t. He’ll call PETA to file a complaint.”
“You do quite a bit of travelling, I gather,” your mom says. She watches Aegon with an intense, mesmerized sort of interest. It’s almost unnerving. It’s like she is searching for something: fingerprints dusted at a crime scene, gold nuggets sifted from a river.
“All over. All the time.”
“What do you do for work?”
“Everything,” Aegon says. “Here I’m salmon trolling. In San Francisco I was a dockworker, in San Diego I was a lifeguard—you don’t want to know how little training it takes to be a custodian of human lives, it’s absolutely horrifying, they’d let a great white shark be a lifeguard if it looked good in red—in Phoenix I did construction, just outside of Denver I got a job working on a cattle ranch. In Dallas I picked cotton. In Portland, Maine I caught lobsters. I’ll try anything once. I just like to keep moving. As long as I can make enough money to have somewhere for me and Sunfyre to sleep at night, I’m happy.”
“You’re just like Jack Dawson in Titanic,” your mom sighs, smiling in a way that brightens her whole face. “All you need is the air in your lungs.”
“You work on the same boat as Heather’s brother Trent, is that right?” your dad asks.
“Oh, Trent!” your mom says. “He’s a hunk. He looks just like a long-haired Matt Damon.”
You squint at her. “Yeah, if Matt Damon did steroids.”
“He’s a nice boy, that Trent,” your dad says. “I mean, he won’t be winning Who Wants To Be A Millionaire anytime soon, but he’s solid.”
Your mom nods in agreement. “Dumb as a rock.”
“He’s a great guy,” Aegon says diplomatically. “Wouldn’t hurt a fly. Unless that fly was a salmon.” He laughs overly-loudly, sloshing red wine out of his glass and staining the tablecloth like blood on snow. Your parents pretend not to notice.
After dinner, your mom brings out dessert: one pumpkin pie, one apple pie, one plate full of Tongass Forest Cookies. Aegon samples both pies and gobbles cookies until his Hawaiian shirt is littered with crumbs, washing them down with more wine. Then he gets up to pull on his parka and let Sunfyre outside. Aegon lurches as he moves, clutching walls and counters and the backs of chairs.
“I’ll go with you,” your mom offers before you can. She helps Aegon down the icy porch steps and then plays with Sunfyre in the backyard: chasing him through the snow, throwing sticks for him to fetch, tossing snowballs for him to snap between his jaws. Aegon, wobbly but in good spirits, participates as much as he can. And the way that your mom looks at him…it’s an expression you can’t recall ever seeing on her face before. It is fascination and fondness and grief all tangled up together. The light in her eyes is beautiful; it is also breathtakingly sad.
Your dad taps one of the empty wine bottles. “He’s got a problem, ladybug.”
“I know.”
“You can’t fix that for him. He has to want to fix himself.”
“I know,” you say again, your voice a brittle whisper.
Your dad sighs deeply and clasps his hands together, stares out the window, contemplates something heavy and unseen. At last, he speaks. “I’ve loved your mother my whole life. And when she and Jesse got together, I thought it was going to kill me. It wasn’t the fact that she was with another man. It was what he put her through. There were fights, there were bruises, and then there were promises and apologies, past-due bills and handmade birthday cakes, locked doors, open doors, kicked down doors. I couldn’t get her to leave him, and I couldn’t watch it keep happening. I tried everything to get away from your mother. I joined the goddamn Marines to get away from her. Four years in Vietnam and I still couldn’t sweat her out. I came back to Juneau and used my G.I. Bill to go to the University of Alaska, and…I would never admit this to anyone except you, but you need to hear it…I waited for that marriage to fall apart. And it did, but it took Jesse drowning in the Gastineau Channel.” He looks at you with miserable, glistening eyes. “Watching the way your mother suffered with a man like that was hell. Watching you go through the same thing would be unbearable.”
There is silence: a silence as thick and perilous as the ocean. Your dad studies you, searching for understanding, for a rational consensus to be reached. You study the lines in your palms. There is nothing rational about what you’re feeling. Alaska is flush with eligible men who are not temporary, not secretive, not unrepentant alcoholics: pilots, truckers, fishermen, loggers, oil riggers, scientific researchers, park rangers. You don’t want any of them. You’ve never wanted anything the way you want Aegon. It’s not fair. It’s not fucking fair.
The back door opens, and your mom and Sunfyre—elated and covered in snow—romp into the house. Your mom is giggling as she grabs a dishtowel from the kitchen and begins to clean the snow from Sunfyre’s fur. “You might want to…uh…retrieve Aegon,” she tells you. “It’s pretty cold out there.”
“What’s he doing?”
“Making snow angels.”
“Oh. Great.” You put on your own parka and head out into the afternoon twilight.
“Hey,” Aegon says from where he’s sprawled on the ground. He’s sweeping his arms and legs back and forth as stars rise in the sky.
“Hey. Are you having fun down there?”
“Yes.” His breath is a cloud in the frigid air. His arms and legs go still. “I love feeling small like this. Nothing matters. Not our pasts, not our accomplishments, not our mistakes. We’re all just bones with memories. We’re all just future space dust.”
“You don’t want to be remembered?”
“God no. What would be worth remembering? I want to be a whisper. I want to be the wind that blows over the ocean.” He cranes his neck to look up at you, thoughtful in that glazed, drunken sort of way. “You can remember me, I guess. I’ll allow that. But only you. No one else.”
“Assuming I outlive you.”
“You will obviously outlive me.” He holds his arms up in the air and you pull him to his feet.
“I think it’s time for you and Sunfyre to go home.”
“Oh no.” His face is filled with abrupt realization. “Do your parents hate me?”
“No, they like you. They like you a lot. They’re just worried about you.” And they’d be a lot more worried if they knew about the track marks on your arms or the fact that you can’t stay in one place longer than six months without being descended upon by maybe-metaphorical ghosts.
Aegon laughs wildly, almost hysterically. He reaches for your shoulder to steady himself and then stops short. He sways in the late-November air, his hair dripping from the snow, his hazy blue eyes all over you. You tuck his ever-errant lock of hair behind his ear. I love him, you think helplessly, like when you know you’re dreaming but can’t wake up. “Worried about me,” he muses without elaborating. “Worried about me.”
Your parents send Aegon home with warm hugs and Tupperware containers full of leftovers, including extra turkey meat for Sunfyre and a truly ludicrous helping of cookies. You drive to Aegon’s apartment building slowly so Sunfyre can stick his head out the back window and bark gleefully at every car you pass. It is dark when you get there, the sunset come and gone, the constellations visible in a rare clear sky: Gemini, Orion, Draco, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor. Your Jeep idles under the lusterless beam of a streetlight.
Aegon asks, a ghost of a smile on his lips: “You want to come upstairs with me?”
“Yes,” you reply. And if you do, you won’t leave until morning. “But not until I’ve talked to you about something first.”
“It’s important,” Aegon says softly, not a question but an observation, reading your face like a weather forecast: chance of sun, chance of storms.
“Yes, it’s important.”
“Okay. Let me take Sunfyre inside and I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
He doesn’t kiss you goodbye, he doesn’t even hug you. He reaches out with one hand and dusts his calloused thumbprint across your cheekbone, marveling at you like you’re a radiant horizon, like you’re ancient ruins: cave paintings older than the pyramids, pillars of stones and secrets. Then he gets out of the Jeep and staggers into the apartment building with Sunfyre scampering along beside him. He reappears moments later, his hands buried in the pockets of his parka. You were too anxious to wait in the Jeep; you pace back and forth beneath the dim ochre streetlight. Aegon watches you from several yards away, waiting for you to begin.
“Look,” you say. “I like you.”
“Cool.”
“No, I mean, I really like you.”
He smiles like the sun, like the Northern Lights. “So you are applying to be my Juneau girl.”
“Yes. But I need something from you first.”
His blue eyes are calm beneath the streetlight, beneath the starlight. “Name it.”
“I need you to get help.”
Aegon shakes his head, not understanding, his smile slowly dying. His lock of bone-white hair cuts his cheek in half like a scar. “What are you talking about?”
“You can go to rehab. I’ll help you find a program, I’ll take care of Sunfyre while you’re away.”
Everything about him changes, like the phases of the moon: his face darkens, his eyes go steely and sharp, everything you love about him is eclipsed. “I don’t need rehab.”
“Aegon, you obviously need rehab.”
He glares at you with savage distrust, with betrayal.
“I need you to get yourself together,” you plead. “I want to be with you, I want to let myself care about you, but I can’t do that when you’re killing yourself right in front of me.”
“I don’t see how it affects you.”
“It does. It will.”
“I’m a lot better now than I was two years ago.”
“It’s not good enough, Aegon.”
He looks down at his combat boots, then back at you. You barely recognize him. “So I’m not good enough.”
“That’s not what I said—”
“It’s what you meant, it’s what this whole fucking conversation is about, right?” he flares. “You not being satisfied with the kind of person I am. You thinking that you get any say at all in who I am. Are you delusional, are you that goddamn narcissistic? Have you staked some claim to me that I’m unaware of? Are you Christopher Columbus here to strip me bare and claim you discovered me?”
“Are you listening to me?! I’m trying to tell you that I l—”
“No, you don’t like me. You like some hypothetical version of me that you’re trying to convince yourself exists.”
You stare at him in heartbroken disbelief. “Why won’t you let me help you?”
“I don’t need your help. I don’t want your help.”
“But I thought…if you would just…we could…”
“When the fuck did I ever promise you a future?” Aegon flings like a blade. “When did I ever promise you anything? You think I showed up here to build you some cabin on the side of a mountain, get a desk job, give you Christmases and kids? That’s not me. That’s never going to be me. I’m not yours to use. I’m not a Ricky Martin poster to keep tacked up on your wall. I’m not the impetus to bail you out of your spineless, unfulfilling life.”
“Please stop.” Your throat is burning; there are hot tears slithering from your eyes. The icy wind stings against your face. “Please just stop.”
“I’m not the one who fucked this up,” Aegon hisses. “It was you, it was you, because I told you the truth but you refused to believe it. I’m not yours and I never was and I’m never going to be, so you better get that through your thick fucking skull. I’m not yours.”
“And why would I want someone like you?!” you scream into the darkness. He flinches away like you’ve hit him. His eyes are huge and glassy. “An alcoholic, an addict, a coward who runs away from anything worth living for? I’d rather die than waste my life on you. Wait, my mistake, waste the next four months on you, because then you’ll be fleeing to go terrorize some other girl in some other city. I don’t want you. I can’t wait to forget you.”
“Then go!” Aegon roars over his shoulder as he turns away. “Just fucking go!” He storms off into his apartment building; he disappears like the end of summer, leaving a jet-black endless void.
You retreat back into your Jeep, slam the door, and sit there under the silver-cold moonlight sobbing into empty, trembling hands.
hi! question!! ok so like. I've been in hbowar fandom for awhile but I must admit I haven't followed MOTA news quite as religiously so I'm sorry if this has been answered before but like...... can I ask why there was such an emphasis on austin butler and callum turner's characters? is it because they're the "leaders" of a sort? (and if so, in like a dick winters way? in that they're the leaders of their unit? or is it in a sledge, basilone, leckie way? in that the narratives of the shows are based on their memoirs of the war?) or is it because they're the actors you're bound to recognize at first glance and therefore are pandering to the audience?
piggy back riding on that question..... do you think mota would follow a band of brothers kinda story telling where the povs sorta change almost every episode? and there's an emphasis on the group as a whole? or is it gonna be like the pacific? where it centers on 3 pov characters, as i said before, based off the irl guys' memoirs of the war?
thank you for running this blog, btw. it's good to have all the news in one place instead of having to go hunting for it!! have you tried to appeal to tumblr staff about getting the blog unshadowbanned? maybe they could help?
i think this website gives a very helpful overview of who the "main players" are (it's a bit dated tho, last updated in 2019!) lots could've changed by then, and even the author admits that it's all speculation. but by 2019, there were 5 confirmed "main characters": john "bucky" egan, gale "bucky" cleven, rosie rosenthal, harry crosby, and ken lemmons. they're palyed by austin butler, callum turner, nate mann, anthony boyle, and raff law, in that order.
the focus is on the 100th bombardment group ("the blood hundredth"), with likely a narrower focus on the 418th and 350th squadrons, with probably some focus on the 349th. cleven's part of the 350th, egan and cruikshank (also important) are part of the 418th, and major william veal's part of the 349th (which is likely less important, but i'm adding it bc i saw his name among egan and cleven's name in this behind the scenes photo almost 2 years ago, but not much on veal otherwise).
so, this is one group and (more or less) two different squadrons. the narrowed focus is meant to lean more "band of brothers" and less "the pacific".
to answer your first question, the focus on butler and turner is probably 1) better for promo (they're more well known to the public) and 2) cleven and egan were both the commanding officers of their respective units. the leaders, for sure. also known as "the two buckys", as they both had the same nickname and were very close friends (as the above article puts it, they "were roommates throughout flight school…[they were] roommates during training, but they would eventually become roommates in a POW camp as well.")
i like that you brought up leckie and sledge tho, bc while the bulk of the show is based around donald miller's book, it seems like they'll also be leaning on harry crosby's memoir- a wing and a prayer. he was a group navigator in the 418th. also, the smithsonian has a little scrapbook that you can read here.
i'm thinking that, yeah, the povs may change depending on the episode (given how it seems they want to follow the "band of brothers" playbook, to a point). there's definitely gonna be time devoted to the ground crew (lemmons was a mechanic in the ground crew and stayed in england for the duration of the war) and rosie rosenthal, especially (his crew was called "rosie's riveters"). then, there's the inclusion of black soldiers in the 332d fighter group, part of the tuskegee airmen (hence the casting of ncuti gatwa, branden cross, josiah cross, among others).
keep in mind that these are all just my guesstimations! i don't want to predict what's gonna happen, given that i still want to be surprised lol
and i'm happy you enjoy the blog! it's fun keeping it regularly updated (despite tumblr hiccups, like thinking i'm a spam bot apparently?? but i think it's been sorted out for now *fingers crossed*)
(also, i recommend everyone to go play around in this website, bc it's stuffed with all the 100th bg information you could ever want!)
hey! could you please recommend me some romance books with the second chance trope or that are similar to You Deserve Each Other ? you have great taste in books 🥺
omg!!! crying that’s so sweet!! here are nine of my favorite second chance romances:
happy place by emily henry harriet and wyn have been the perfect couple since college. until they broke off their engagement six months ago and still haven't told their friends. now they're stuck at their friend group's annual maine vacation, lying through their teeth and pretending they're still madly in love with each other. only, harriet's discovering, it is all too easy to pretend to be in love in public. it's infinitely harder when it's just the two of them, and she has to pretend not to be. a fantastic second chance romance that's told in then-and-now alternating timelines, showing readers how harriet and wyn fell in love and wondering how they could have ever fallen out of it.
do i know you? by emily wibberley and austin siegemind-brokka eliza and graham are as out-of-sync as can be on their vacation getaway meant to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary. the spark is just... missing. when another guest at their resort mistakes them both for singles and introduces them, eliza and graham decide pretending to be perfect strangers could actually be just the breath of fresh air this trip needs. what happens when you fall in love with a stranger who actually happens to be your wife? again, very similar to ydeo, as the couple never broke up, just lost sight of each other. a great read if you love the tough conversations!
the neighbor favor by kristina forest after being ghosted by the obscure author she'd been falling in love with over email, shy bookworm lily decides she needs to get out of her head and get back on the dating scene, and enlists the help of her dashing new neighbor (and secret obscure author!) nick. this is primarily a two-person love triangle (my personal favorite trope!!) with a hefty sprinkling of second-chance romance in there as well. the second chance comes in strong in the second half.
romantic comedy by curtis sittenfeld sparks fly on set between late-night comedy writer sally and heartthrob pop star noah while they work together on the sketches for the week he's hosting the live comedy that airs saturday night. sally's convinced noah is out of her league, but can't deny the pull she feels from him. a series of will-they-won't-theys that keep ending in won't-they until finally in the quiet isolation of the pandemic lockdown, sally and noah decide to go for it. this story is told over the course of several years, and noah and sally keep dancing around each other, but sally's self-image keep complicating things. this story is set very majorly within the pandemic, so trigger warning for that!
before i let go by kennedy ryan yasmen and josiah have loved each other since their teens. they built a life and a business and a family together, but when life delivered blow after devastating blow, the two found that love alone couldn't save everything. now divorced and co-parenting, they're finally settling into their new rhythm, but yasmen can't help feeling pulled to josiah like she hasn't in years. is it too late for them to find forever? or are some things stronger once they've been rebuilt? a truly gorgeous novel. heavy trigger warnings for miscarriage, mental illness, infertility, and deep depression. but josiah and yasmen's love story is one forged in fire.
something wilder by christina lauren lily wilder is keeping her gaze forward, guiding tourists on fake treasure hunts through the canyons of utah in an effort to save enough to buy back her family's ranch — and she is most definitely not still hung up on former ranch-hand leo grady who stole her heart a decade ago. that lie's a whole lot easier to believe before leo shows up, unbeknownst to them both, on a bro-trip guided by none other than lily herself. if only their romantic history was the biggest thing to worry about. this is a romantic adventure novel, full of action, betrayal, peril, and heart-pounding suspense. it delivers a great dose of that pining-longing-guilt that is expected of second-chance romances, but the resolution is a lot cleaner than many others in the genre. i loved this book so much, but it's definitely a polarizing one.
thank you for listening by julia whelan former actress turned successful audiobook narrator sewanee lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident, but finds a new journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel, starring opposite anonymous heartthrob brock mcnight. sparks fly as the two pass samples over comfortably anonymous emails, neither of them knowing the other is actually the missed connection from their whirlwind night in vegas. another story featuring a two-person love triangle with sprinklings of second-chance romance. the healing arc in this story is extremely similar to ydeo, like two sides of the same coin.
twice in a blue moon by christina lauren sam was tate's first everything, including her first heartbreak. the two meet as teens on a two-week london vacation, where they fall hard and fast for each other. the only complication? tate is holding a big secret about her identity. when sam finds out and betrays her trust, it thrusts tate into an international limelight she never wanted for herself, and she never sees sam again. not until fourteen years later, when the filming location of tate's upcoming blockbuster film is sam's family farm. with a likely academy award on the line, tate must focus all her energy on her performance, even while she feels her heart pulling her towards sam. classic christina lauren. classic heartbreak. loose retelling of a room with a view, which is done so beautifully.
love and other words by christina lauren macy hasn't seen elliot in ten years. not since the day that changed everything. after the death of her mother, macy's father bought a cabin in the california wine country — a place the two of them could escape. macy finds her greatest escape in the bookish neighbor boy elliot, with whom she spends lazy summers devouring books and sharing favorite words. as the two fall more enamored with each other over their teen years, glimpses into their future show macy engaged to another man, and still agonizing ten years later over elliot's betrayal. this one is a doozy. told in alternating timelines, this novel is like seeing the wreckage before being told the agonizing story of a train crash. trigger warnings for parental death, grief, anxiety, and sexual assault. i... love this book.
i hope this list is helpful for you! if you'd like to see in-depth reviews for any of the books above, you can always add me on goodreads!
MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT 1776 BECAUSE WHY NOT:
-William Duell stayed with the show the whole time it was on broadway and did not miss a single performance.
-previews were supposed to last longer on broadway, but it was cut short because on March 14th 1969 (55 years ago today) Howard Da Silva had a heart attack. The guys got him out of the theater and they revived him, they wanted to immediately take him to the hospital but he refused, and said he wanted to open the show, and then they could do with him as they pleased. So he opened the show with everybody, and then immediately as the curtain came down, an ambulance was waiting for him outside the theater and he got in, and he had surgery that night and was out of the show for MONTHS. Thank god they still had Rex Everhart from when the show was out of town because otherwise they would have been FUCKED. The cast did not have a party because of this whole incident. But unfortunately, the main three, Bill Daniels, Ken Howard and Howard da Silva, only did 5 shows together on broadway, Ken Howard would leave 3 months into the show, and the next time they’d all work together would be for the film.
-Howard Caine was “fired” by Jack Warner from the film because he kept complaining about the heat. When Peter Hunt found out about this, he went APE SHIT and got Caine back.
-there are many new actors for the 1776 film than original broadway cast themselves. Peter hunt got this all wrong. Yes, some of the original cast was there, but no everybody. The originals include David Ford, William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Ken Howard, Ralston Hill, Emory Bass, Roy Poole, Ronald Holgate, William Duell, Virginia Vestoff, Jonathan Moore and Charles Rule. (John Cullum was in the Broadway production, but he didn’t originate Rutledge. Same with James Noble but he had been Hancock, not Witherspoon) the new actors include Donald Madden, Ray Middleton, Leo Leyden, William Hansen, Rex Robbins, Patrick Hines, Daniel Keyes, Howard Caine, John Myhers, Blythe Danner and Stephen Nathan. And also all the silent men in congress who don’t have any lines. So yeah, a LOT more new actors then OG cast members.
-when the broadway company went to do the show for Richard Nixon at the White House, the cast were persuaded to do it by the producers telling them they’d all get pay raises. That never ended up happening, and Bill Daniels was LIVID. They were lied to just to do a fucking show for Nixon, because 98% of the cast hated him. After that performance, Howard Da Silva joined an anti-war protest outside of the White House, still in full costume. He HATED Nixon with a PASSION because of his involvement of his blacklisting from Hollywood.
-Bill Daniels missed more performances than he thought he did. In his book, he mentions he only missed 2 shows out of his entire 2 year run. That isn’t true. Paul David-Richards, the OG Josiah Bartlett, understudied John Adams, and in his bio in the playbill, it says he went on at the very last second for Bill, and ended up doing 5 shows that week because Bill got sick. And Jonathan Moore also did one show as Adams.
-The cast referred to the song “Cool, Cool Considerate Men” as “Cool Conservative Men”
That’s it for now :)
Her eyes were wide, her form tense as she looked up at Moon.
Her jaw worked, words failing her as her claws flexed. She was speechless, terrified at the fact that she got caught.
Forget being afraid of being chased off, she might not survive to see the sun rise!
"I mean no harm," She managed, voice strained as her throat closed up in fear. She held her human hands up in a sign of submission, her ears folding back as her legs curled in. "I just... I'm not hunting the herd," She added.
"Yeah, stalking the herd from in a tree? Totally not predator behavior."
He snarled and pressed her farther to the ground. The baby wolf centaur was whimpering, and he shushed it quietly. He was about to snarl another response, when Josiah approached. Moon looked up at him questioningly.
Shadow Puppets AU - Father Josiah, General William and the Cult of Gravesfield
It is genuinely easier just to put a general warning for Triggering Topics than it would be to list them all. Just be wary.
-The original town of Gravesfield was founded by Father Josiah as an offshoot of the Protestant Church, blending their traditional belief system with Puritan practices independent of the Church of England -Unbeknownst to his followers, Josiah had actually been excommunicated which was why he started his own church. -Father Josiah kept in power by exploiting the faith of the Townsfolk, particularly children whom he abused and sexually assaulted. He targeted vulnerable families and extorted them with aide from the church, or blackmailing them into staying -Such as the case with Caleb when he tried to take Philip and leave after finding out what Josiah was doing to him by revealing he knew who the boys really were (Wittebane is not their real name among other things, I might make a full lore post about) and threatening to expose them to keep Caleb in line. -He has a partner in General William, the two are not exactly friends, but both keep quiet about the other's sins to not have their own exposed. William is a prolific serial murderer who largely targets young women for hanging under the guise of calling them Witches. -Part of their unspoken pact also included Josiah accusing people who spoke up against him of Witchcraft and turning them over to William -Father Josiah was the first to find the Collector's Tablet in the woods, but believed he was a Demon specifically one representing his sin against children, and has been trying to keep the Collector hidden and kill him (genuinely he thinks if he can kill this Shadow demon that he will no longer molest kids) -His crimes were not exposed until one day Astrophel (the Collector) intervened while he was abusing Philip, and almost killed him. Josiah tried to accuse Philip of Witchcraft and summoning a Demon, but Philip and the other kids that he abused came forward with what he had been doing to them -Despite being instrumental in getting him caught and brought to justice, Astrophel has regrets not actually killing Josiah himself and even Centuries later he's still not over it. -After Josiah was executed, the townsfolk Gravesfield tried to move on with life as normal but the town was struck by a series of tragedies, starting with the disappearance of the Wittebane brothers, eventually leading to them abandon the apparently cursed town -Some of them moved to other settlements, but others simply rebuilt the town, establishing new Gravesfield in 1636 where the disappearance of the Wittebane brothers was romanticized into local legend because the story of a younger brother trying to save his older brother from a Witches enchantment sounds so much better than the tragedy of Fayerweather family and other horrors of old Gravesfield _"Witch Hunter" General William, as previously stated, is a serial killer who masks his kills in the guise of protecting the Town of Gravesfield from Witches -He is secretly a half witch who's powers never developed, causing him to be outcast among the Demon Realm, rejecting and resenting his magical heritage -He first met Philip when the boy was eight years old after he had an encounter with a real demon, and saw potential in him, yet kept his distance because of Father Josiah's interest in Philip -When Josiah was exposed, William took it upon himself to declare the preacher had been possessed by a Demon and hung him himself -Caleb disappeared a few years after that, and when Philip was twelve, and he immediately went to General William and his team of Witch Hunters for help, all accompanied him on his quest to save his brother, but this was left out of the legend. -General William became a father figure to Philip when they first arrived in the Demon realm, with William taking him on as an apprentice for not just for Witch Hunting, but trying to shape him into a killer to carry on his legacy once they returned to Human Realm. -Centuries later, the uniforms of the Coven Scouts are very loosely based on Belos's memory of General Williams
@standswap-september
a whole year can make a difference!
doing and posting this days in advanced since i wanted to do some newer art! Sorry for November Rain being nonexistent here 😔💥 I am a coward who didn’t want to guess around with colours with it 😭.
[ Bios ] :
Josiah Joestar (he/him, The Passion) - Diligent yet very tired this man will go at great lengths for his loved ones. A man from a well known family of mariners, though a bit rough around the edges due to his rather strict upbringing he’s a sweetie at heart, though he prefers to not get into conflict destiny pulls him towards it and he unfortunately takes part in one that involves him against his brother Dante.
He was then later pulled into stranger circumstances once he is pulled into trans-timelinear and universal situations and is thrown into a small rut when told that Dante has been stirring up messes for a while and that exploded into something like this? He just turned twenty two why is everyone jumping to calling him grandfather. He however, is not immune to sometimes joining in whatever nonsense that has brewed.
John Joestar (he/him, Hermit Purple) - Rambunctious and acid tongued this Joestar who’ll pull any dirty trick in the book if it means that he’ll get the upper hand, a prankster and not afraid to spit out any cutting remark regardless of situation, he's got good intentions he just so happens to be a bit of an ass about it. Unfortunately known for crashing planes.
While training to battle the Pillarmen to get stupid rings out of him (and not the marriage kind!) he was ambushed by his Hamon Coach who turned out to be mind controlled and swiftly after that he's brought into wacky stuff such as fighting ghosts and meeting himself as an old man!?
Josei Horojo (he/him, Star Platinum) - Peppy and with his heart on his sleeve the boy has passion and damn will he show it! He's what one would call the boy next door, his cheerful attitude and willingness to help others is usually bound to bring a few people in. Josei's a bit of a mama's boy and isn't afraid to show it as he'll go on a Journey if it means helping her get better!
While he and his gramps were on their way home after the battle with DANTE he is later approached by a man with a hat and later his revived yet mind controlled companions! In what is a convoluted plot to once again destroy the Joestar lineage he must gather the Corpse Parts and other Joestars to put an end to these multi-universal and timelinear escapades!
Joudai Higashikata (he/him, Crazy Diamond) - Anxious and on the shyer end of things he just wanted to play for his baseball team. Joudai tends to question Everything, he doesn't know what's going on he would Like to know what's going on! He cares deeply for people and wants to help people but he just doesn't know How and often needs to be instructed on what to do but he gets better in the long run once the hunt for felines ensue.
During this hunt, he gets into a brawl with his mind controlled friends Hachiro and Sada and after knocking Sada out of it he's pulled into more confusing shenanigans which involve More relatives he’s never heard about!?
Gioro Giotere (any pronouns, Gold Experience) - Cunning and sharp witted while he can't guarantee you're complete safety they'll make sure you make it out alive. Zey're very stand alone, it's a pragmatic kid to boot so she'll do whatever he needs to do to complete a task or get closer to a goal that xer companions don't fully know at the moment, he’s not at all fond of the concept of a puppet for he finds regular ones unnerving and people ones spineless.
After the defeat of Divino he encounters strange people who arrived at the colosseum for their assistance and it involves the gathering of their other family (which she was surprised to know that it had) to stop DANTE, the name strikes a bit of familiarity to him as xe has heard the name be said by their mother…perhaps it could potentially meet zer father and get a few answers.
Joaquina Rojoh (she/her, Stone Free) - Stoic and adamant on what she wants this young woman will prove her innocence for a crime she didn’t do. A good eye for design she’ll spot discrepancies and flaws within structures (whether it helps in getting out or because she felt a bit catty that day) with ease, once she gets more properly acquainted and befriends a few of the inmates and strays that sit around she develops a protective streak and a Ride or Die relationship with them.
After her father’s memory and Stand film were stolen by Wyatt K. Spade and the field begins to shift Plus admittedly a bit frazzled by the whole thing she’s then walked up to by her own old man and while she’s reassured he’s ok-wait what do you mean this is the Younger version of dad. And What do you MEAN Jesus’ corpse is mind controlling some of her gang.
José Joestar (he/him, TUSK) - Ambitious and ready to prove himself this horse rider from the Philippines is ready to rise above and get that cash prize. He’s a suave and loud man and knows how to use his words to get what he wants, though he tends not to show it since he prefers to have his bravado up in public whenever possible he does form tight emotional connections and cares for those he considers close such as fellow racer Rajul.
In a battle that costed Rajul’s life he mourned as he was about to square off against the equally mournful Stand user that wants to access dimensions to reunite with their family a muscular purple man suddenly appeared and somehow the parts of the
Joyara Higashikata (they/them, Soft & Wet) - Inquisitive and easygoing like their alternate universe counterpart they have little to no idea as to what’s going on though they’re somewhat less questioning about how things go about. They’re often curious about many things being an amnesiac that literally just woke up on the beachside, they’re as a result a bit nosy and 100% willing to pry into whatever to get as much info as they can especially if it’s their origins in question,
What would’ve been a day spent trying to pursue who they are two women proceed to ambush them and their crush partner in crime Koena this kid in a baseball cap with the saddest eyes they’ve ever seen jumps in with a burrito that smells holy and soon enough they and Koena are dragged into shenanigans that involve family, an identity crisis, oh and more confusion.
=⭐⭐⭐=
[ Ability Overview of the Stands ] :
Can't be Standswap without Stands so I'll go over them all briefly, they're all sentient or semi-sentient by default and they won't be as prose posed as the bios for the Joestars.
[ Now & Then ] - A Stand awakened by DANTE piercing himself with the arrow and considered Josiah's posthumous one. It's predominant ability is to watch over people within the Joestar family, it's most effective for those who are direct blood descendants of Josiah than it does for those adopted or married into the family, it does this within the mirror it resides.
Speculated to have a humanoid form but it has never denied or confirmed these.
[ Wayward Son ] - The Stand of Josei Horojo, at first its main and at the time assumed sole ability is to punch stuff really hard however one too many incidents later and in the fight with DANTE it reveals it has the ability to slow time, it can do this for a maximum of seven seconds and is physically demanding for th euser.
[ Daytripper ] - The Stand of John Joestar, it has the ability to store things within a small subspace, effectively making it a hammer space of sorts. It has a limit to how big and how much it can store within it.
[ When Doves Cry ] - The Stand of Joudai Higashikata, this purple pompadoured Stand can change the material of the object it targets though for convenience it often chooses to use metals, it has the potential to change the material to something besides metal.
[ Endorphin Machine ] - The Stand of Gioro Giotere, it has the power to speed or slow down the growth process of most things and the ability improves along with Gioro’s skill level. Once stabbed with the Requiem Arrow it can fully control the physical maturation process such as the aforementioned speed and slow but also reversing and full stopping.
[ Little Wing ] - The Stand of Joaquina Rojoh, it can turn any material into a string like material though the speed at which it can do such depends on what material wishes to turn into string, she’s able to reconstruct and in some cases reshape them, she is able to do it on her own body however tends to do this somewhat sparsely as Joaquina says the actual sensation is…not that good.
[ Tango in the Night ] - The Stand of José Joestar, an ACT Stand that grows alongside him in skill to harness the Spin. At first allowing José to minorly manipulate small objects to being able to being able to bend dimensions to its will whenever the drive is reached. Rajul is both impressed and frankly terrified at this escalation of power.
[ Queenie Eye ] - The Stand of Joyara Higashikata, a Stand with the ability to fuse two objects together and a Stand that one Toyo Santos keeps a keen eye one. As of right now its power can only work on inanimate objects though Toyo suspects that it might grow as time passes.
hunting is actually so fun for no reason- i bought so many fancy ass guns too 😭
also my play type whenever i play ANY story game thats open world is to do every possible thing every except the actual story so i get a bunch of stuff and then its so muvh easier
in short i have 6000+ dollars 😋
bonus of exploring everything is i got thw white arabian and i love her sm ‼️‼️ i named her pearl and she is my baby
dress up is my seconf favorite hobby
my fav outfit rn is the red vest w the floral pattern on the front (i forget what its called) n the black french dress shirt underneath + the bison necklace talisman
(also arthur w medium-long length hair n short facial hair>>>)
this game is so detail oriented, its kind of insane- im doing a high honor run atm, and i came across the blind beggar for the third (?) time and the blind guy said and i quote
"that is which killing you will finally help you, friend- to hear and see."
is this foreshadowing this feels like foreshadowing
also ik arthurs dies (bc of tiktok edits and fics, they artists in this fandom is amazing!!!) and im not prepared at all 😭 im going to procrastinate so bad
ALSO CHARLES DESERVES SO SO MUCH I LOVE HIM
yk the hole lil speech he has at the campfire yk "most human beings seem to know why they were born but, for me- its seems i was just mean ton hurt and suffer myself" that one
im bawling istg if he doesnt get a good ending im going to be writing a formal complaint to rockstar games
anyways
tw opinions (ik bro its crazy to have opinions in 2024 whattt no wayy)
ive gotten to the point in playing where im in ch 3, and the only way i can progress the actual story is to help micah rob a stagecoach or whatever
micah is a bastard and i dont like him
((true story also))
yo, having 6k in chapter 3 is amazing. good for you!
my first playthrough i got the white arabian and i named her Lemoyne Tree as a tribute to the state of Lemoyne and my favorite post malone song Lemon Tree. But she always got super dirty so i then went to the lake next to Strawberry and tamed the red chestnut arabian. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that one, she's gorgeous and arthur always gets that one when i play it. my beautiful baby girl Diablo <3
also yes. heckin FUCK MICAH BELL. even from the beginning he's been a slime ball. hate that man <3
i won't go too far, but just keep yourself high honor towards the end of the game. you need that to be your first ending. :')
Charles deserves the absolute world. just listening to him speak and hanging out with him at camp, and the missions you continue on to do with him throughout the game are so much fun. charles is someone i wish i could have in my real life because he seems like he would be the best person to speak to and hang out with. he is so lovely and down to earth. even arthur says it a couple times throughout the game. charles gets a good ending i promise.
my top blorbos are Arthur, Dutch, Charles, Hosea, and Josiah Trelawny my absolute beloved <33333 just wait until you go on the mission with Charles to find trelawny. one of my favorite missions ever ever ever ever!!
a lot of people dislike dutch, but i love him so much. he is my actual father. i love him.
i also hate john. let me know how you feel about that little greasy weasel of a man. :)))
i'm so so so glad you're having fun and i am very invested, so please continue to keep me updated on what ur doing because i need to live vicariously through you. if i could erase my entire mind and replay the game over and over again for the first time, i totally would
How do the Crux show affection towards each other/their loved ones? 👀
Pandora: Gift giving (specifically making things for people), cooking for people, hugs, words of affirmation, acts of service
Noah: Sarcasm, teasing, quality time, subtle things (such as taking notice to a subtle change in someone’s demeanor), gift giving (specifically making things for people), protective
Ambrose: Words of affirmation, acts of service, mild physical affection (pats on shoulder/head), generally being a shoulder to cry on and good advice giver, protective
Constance: Quality time, going out and doing things with people, just generally being in other people’s presence, sarcasm, teasing, noticing the little things
Nico: Gift giving, words of affirmation, hugs, making things for people, listening to people talk
Nathaniel: very harsh, sarcasm, teasing, kind aggressive in his care actually, acts of service
Natasha: not as harsh but still does lots of sarcasm and teasing, pretty gentle when in a situation that requires it, quality time
Lilith: Acts of service, lots of singing to people or writing songs about people (yes this is a love language fight me), hugs, physical affection
Josiah: physical affection, acts of service, protective, a shoulder to lean on (metaphorically because unfortunately he’s not very tall)
Karissa: Acts of service, playing and writing songs for people, storytelling, quality time, very physically affectionate
Chance: Teasing, acts of service, going out and participating in something one of his friends enjoy is one of his favorite things, hunting with people is another thing he enjoys, loves listening to people talk about their lives, protective, a big teddy bear really lol
Amelia: Acts of service, taking care of people when they’re not feeling well/are sick, tries to offer medicinal remedies for problems her friends are having (knows medicine can’t fix everything), really enjoys it when her friends help her with her work!
Barbara: Very physically and emotionally affectionate, loves giving nicknames to the other members, very much of the “cool mom” figure in the group and takes pride in that title, protective
Owen: Quiet, focuses on subtle things (like if you say you want something from the grocery store but don’t put it on the list, he’ll get it anyways), not much of an initiator of physical affection but doesn’t mind being the recipient, teases people a lot, loves to debate things with people, he doesn’t really have one style since he’s a more “go with the flow” kind of guy, whatever you wanna do is something he’s willing to try.
Her claws flexed as Moon held them up for all to see, curling into fists to hide her talons.
"I swear, I mean no harm," She said, her ears pinned back nervously, "I just... I like your herd." She inhaled before adding quickly, "B-but not in a hunting way! More in a safe family way. I don't want no trouble..."
Her human hands nervously fidgeted with her ears, green eyes wide as she stared up at Moon above her.
Moon huffed. He didn't believe her. But Josiah wasn't going to give up on his hybrid friend.
