Almost every single time I see an article or essay about Power Girl, it's always about her costume and the debate about whether or not it should be redesigned. I rarely ever see discussion about what she's like as a character. Because of this, I decided to go into why I like her as a character.
Like plenty of others, most of what I know about Power Girl stems from the run by Justin Grey and Jimmy Palmiotti, with awesome art by Amanda Conner.
At the start of the run, Karen's inner monologue details how she wants to have a fresh start after everything she has recently been through. Fittingly, the first panel shows her flying by the Statue of Liberty, America's greatest monument to new beginnings. That's a recurring theme in the run.
Tumblr media
Most of Karen's opponent throughout the run are looking to get a new lease of life in one way or the other. Many of them, initially, try to do this through dubious means. Ultra-Humanite wanted to put his mind in Power Girl's body, three alien women with advanced weaponry wanted to recklessly galavant around Earth, and Vartox tried to seduce Power Girl.

What I love about Karen in each of these battles is her willingness to help them once she finds out what they've been through. She finds out Ultra-Humanite suffers from unresolved trauma, so she tries to get him psychological help. Those three alien girls were on the run from dangerous people, so Karen relocates them to a more secure location. Vartox needed help to save his species and...that one is a little too weird to explain.

The point is, Karen does all she can to help. In spite of everything these different characters had done, she found it in herself to rise up and show compassion. While she is a hothead, she cares immensely about everyone and wants to make the world a better place. I wish more people would talk about that instead of her costume.

One of my favorite head canons is multilingual Levy intentionally swearing in languages she knows people around her don’t understand and even just unintentionally slipping into different languages randomly
(Gajeel thinks her cussing people out in languages they don’t understand is hilarious and will sometimes intentionally set her off)
