main character gets an eye injury - the image will not leave my head. in the magnus institute ruins statement there was this whole thing about redcanary having some kind of encounter with or experience with eye trauma and that feels like something thats just. gonna come up again

another mechanisms va - self explanatory, we need to complete the set. would love to hear kofi or rachel.

gwen has trauma related to something that happened with elias - this is going on the theory that she’s not elias’ counterpart, but a relative of some kind. something spooky happens to him and that pushes gwen to research the paranormal.

character referencing nicholas flamel - all the main characters have names that reference alchemists, and nicholas flamel is probably the most famous alchemist of all time. i doubt he’ll be given the smirke treatment because that kinda already happened with the transphobic wizard books, but someone could be sharing his name.

mag 114 statement is relevant - thats the. hill top road statement that deals with other realities, and anya (the statement giver) could be from the protocol verse. we could totally hear about the aftermath of her departure

alice/sam/gwen = three primes - the three main alchemical symbols on the OIAR crest, and a good sort of symbolic trio sorter. the three peimes are salt, sulphur and mercury, and are the basis for alchemy. the down to earth, reliable salt, the firey, unpredictable sulfur, and the adaptable, easygoing mercury. i think these could apply i just want to have it called out in universe

lena is a good person - i don’t think they’d pull the evil boss thing twice. i just think lena’s weird mannerisms are from her autistic swag

celia is related to or is agnes - (related to as in. her story involves agnes, not that shes like. a sister.) this comes from a theory by @/pinklotjeart, i think. basically: through the way her death was described (spark returned to the lightless flame) and some timeline discrepancies and general avatarness making it weird, agnes might not be Dead dead. and celia’s counterpart, lynne - well, she saw a fire ghost. also, both her and agnes are the only non one-off characters who have shakespeare names afaik. agnes MONTAGUE, celia from as you like it…

annabelle cane is related somehow - self explanatory, she was at hilltop road when everything went down. might have been pulled in.

a villain’s goal is creating the philosopher’s stone or other alchemical thing - tmagp is heavily inspired by alchemy, and the philosopher’s stone was the main goal of alchemy!! it would grant you eternal knowledge snd the ability to turn lead into gold- which seems like a good. evil dude’s ambition

the desolation gets more focus - the institute burned down, the oiar crest has a lot of sulfur symbols (the fire element), alchemy as a whole having to do with fire, celia and her connection- it paints a very. lightless flame picture

trip to germany - a lot of the arg was set in and around berlin, and there was that exchange between sam and colin about german in the pilot! i could see a germany trip happening in the same way jon took a trip to china and america.

Sir Humphry Davy was a Cornish chemist and inventor with quite the record of scientific achievement:

Developed electrolysis (the process of using electricity to isolate elements)

Discovered the elements barium, boron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium as well as the compounds hydrogen telluride and hydrogen phosphide

Studied and wrote about the anesthetic effects of nitrous oxide (aka “laughing gas,” a term he also coined) 

Proved that diamonds are made of carbon

Served as president of the British Royal Society; inaugural chairman of the Athenaeum Club; and co-founder of the Zoological Society of London

Davy was such a formidable player in the European realm of scientific learning that despite the fact that England and France were at war at the time, Napoleon gave the Englishman special permission to visit France’s leading scientists and have an audience with Empress Marie Louise in 1813. 

So what, you may ask, does Sir Humphry Davy have to do with light? In the foregoing summary of the scientist’s life, we have left out his most famous accomplishment: the Davy safety lamp. 

Naturally, coal miners working in the dark depths of the earth need artificial lighting by which to do their work. The problem was in early nineteenth-century northern England, the flame of the miners’ candles kept mixing with a natural flammable gas found in the mines, known as “firedamp,” causing a series of devastating explosions that claimed the lives of hundreds of miners. Moved by the suffering of working-class families in northern England, Robert Gray, the rector of Bishopwearmouth, appealed to Davy in a letter in 1815 to develop a method of lighting mines safely. Over the next several months following this charge from the clergyman, Davy developed his famous safety lamp. The safety lamp works by enclosing a flame in a wire mesh cylinder. This cylinder disseminates the heat that would otherwise cause the flame to explode upon contact with a flammable gas. 

Henry Mayhew’s semi-fictionalized biography (featured here) of a young Humphry Davy uses a narrative of the chemist’s life to teach readers about the scientific properties of two things that are essential to Davy’s famous invention: heat and light. Along the way, Humphry teaches his younger sister, Kitty, about refraction and reflection and how these light phenomena can be used to trick the eye:

Humphry explains the role that light refraction plays in producing superior mirages. Superior mirages of ships at sea, which make vessels look like they are floating in midair, may be the origin of flying boat legends, such as the Flying Dutchman. 

Humphry explains to Kitty the principles of reflection in mirrors.

Humphry debunks a popular trick to play on people looking for a paranormal encounter:

“It is a favourite experiment to place a skull, strongly illuminated, in the outer apartment, and to reflect an image of it amid the smoke, so as to be visible to the spectators in the inner room.”

The Most Haunted Beaches in Australia

It’s the spookiest time of the year once again! And what’s a better way to celebrate it than checking out some haunted, spooky, and creepy places? Of course, we don’t recommend you to travel across the country to seek them all out, but you can visit these rumoured haunted beaches if you plan to celebrate Halloween swimming or sailing, or simply just cruising in the ocean.

Curious travellers beware! Proceed with caution if you want to visit these beaches  when you’re boating. Even though these phantoms don’t bother people too much to be a menace, it’s important to practice safety always. Navigate your boat safely and bring the proper marine equipment and boat accessories with you at all times to aid you in your excursions. Make sure not to act too boisterous to avoid any unexplained yet spooky encounters. It’s believed that paranormal entities hate loud noises and reckless behaviour and let those rowdy folks suffer their wrath. Whether you believe in that or not, it’s important to behave and be respectful of your surroundings: 

Jenny Dixon Beach, NSW

Jenny Dixon Beach, located on NSW’s Central Coast, is rumoured to be haunted by two ghosts. One of the ghosts is the spirit of a woman killed in a shipwreck off Norah Head in the 1800s. She appears dressed in old-fashioned clothing with her arms outstretched as if asking for help. It’s believed she is looking for her son who passed away in the shipwreck, according to some locals who allegedly encountered the entity.

The second ghost appears a little further back from the beach. Hundreds of people have reported to police that they’ve seen a young girl hitch-hiking along the road only for her to suddenly disappear. Others have reported offering her a lift only for her to disappear out of thin air. According to an urban legend relating to the story of how this ghost appeared, she is a vengeful spirit who seeks the living world for justice after being maltreated and killed by a group of local men in the 1970s.

Brighton Beach, SA

A lot of people in Adelaide reported that they’ve seen a woman dressed in vintage 1920s swimwear diving off Brighton Jetty but she never actually comes up for air. It’s widely believed that the apparition is Kitty Whyte, who was the first person reported to be killed by a shark. It was reported that she dived off a jetty only for a shark to attack her. Although she was rescued from the harrowing experience, she sadly succumbed to her injuries. Although the story is sad, tourists and visitors don’t need to worry about her sightings as there are no reports of her attacking any living person. 

Bunker Bay, WA

In the West of Bunker Bay is where a lighthouse called Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is located and many believed that it is a very haunted building. 

Apparently, there are a lot of ghosts living in the area; a young Scotsman sailor who died in the area, an early 20th-century woman who attacks men in their sleep at nighttime, and a young boy holding up a lantern. Whether they are real or not, having many ghosts in close proximity is enough to give chills down your spine. 

Glenelg Beach, SA

Even though there are no phantoms or spirits haunting this beach, the beach (and Glenelg in general) has a weird, dark, and mystical vibe in it. in 1966, three Beaumont children disappeared here without any traces, the case of Somerton man,  the still-unidentified dead body who was discovered south of Glenelg in 1948, and the tragic incident that happened in The Luna Park Ghost Train that caught fire in 1979 which the train was built in Glenelg. 

Glenelg even has a dark history tour offered by the locals so if you’re the type who’s into this type of excursion, this one is for you. 

Manly Beach, NSW

Manly is home to a site that is extremely haunted: The Q Station, which is 5 minutes away from Manly Beach. Originally known as the North Head Quarantine Station, the station ran from the 1830s to 1984 as a place to assess and treat any Australian immigrants who were carrying communicable diseases like Spanish flu, measles, and tuberculosis, to mention a few. Over half a thousand people died on the premises, despite the fact that it has a beautiful resort and restaurant that are sprawled across 30 hectares of protected land. There are plenty of ghost tours you can do on-site to meet the many ghosts who hang about, including a tall thin man who feeds on people’s fear (sounds like Slenderman).

    This story took place over a period of ten months from December 2018 to September 2019.

    It was the winter of 2018 and I had just moved into my apartment in the finished basement of an of duplex. My sister, Em, lived upstairs on one side and two of her friends lived on the other.

    Em had just adopted her third dog along with two kittens, Oliver and Imelda, and had asked me to cat sit for a few months while she got the new dog acclimated to the two she already had. I agreed.

    In the three months I looked after them it became routine for me to empty the litter box when I got home from work every evening. It was always full, and I think they must have been shitting out of sheer boredom.

    One dark, cold evening I had taken the box out and was crossing the parking area at the side of the house to empty the litter into the woods when I bumped into a cat. Now, anyone who knows anything about cats knows they love to dart in front of you while you’re walking, and you end up inadvertently kicking them. This was what happened then; I felt my shin connect with a small furry body.

    When this happened my first thought was, “Oh shit, one of the kittens got out!”, since they were forever curious about the front door and the wide world beyond. I immediately looked around, ready to drop the box and make a grab for a wayward kitten. Only, there was no cat to be seen. I looked all around, and the parking area was completely empty; I was stumped. I hadn’t imagined it. I had felt a cat hit my leg yet there was no sound or movement anywhere.

    It was odd but I simply added it to the list of many paranormal experiences I’d had in life and moved on. I did mention it to my sister but after agreeing it was weird, we both forgot about it. What else could we do?

    Fast forward to the spring of 2019, April or May. The kittens had grown enough and graduated upstairs to my sister’s apartment where were getting along with their dog siblings without incident.

    My sister and I were talking one day, and she mentioned she’d had an odd experience that was like the one I’d had.

    She’d been sat on the couch in her apartment and had her feet on the coffee table, watching TV, and had felt a cat walk under and brush against her legs. Again, if you know cats, typical behavior. Only, from where she was sitting, she had a clear view of both her kittens curled up asleep on their bed and her dogs were tall enough they couldn’t walk under her outstretched legs.

    Then jump to September 2019. My sister, Em, was prepping for friends to come over and as a precaution had shut her fur babies in the bedrooms. The cats still had a fascination with the outdoors and the dogs had stranger anxiety.

    When everyone arrived, they were all sat around the living room, chatting and having drinks when one of the girls suddenly jumped, startled, and said that one of my sister’s cats must have been up on the couch because she’d felt a small, furry body brush against her arm. And Em then had to tell her the cats were both tucked away in the bedroom.

    When my sister told me the story of this third encounter, we talked about it for a bit trying to figure out who this could have been, and she concluded it was the ghost of the cat from the apartment next door to hers.

    One of my sister’s friends had previously had a fat tabby she called Mr. Kitty. I’d met him a few times when I’d visited before I’d moved in, and he was a sweetheart. He loved people and loved to cuddle and would sometimes come over to my sister’s place to hang out or spend the night if no one was home next door as he was an indoor/outdoor cat.

    Unfortunately, sometime in the fall of 2018, Mr. Kitty got sick and died. I remember being saddened and disappointed when I heard this because I had been looking forward to having him as my neighbor.

    My sister said she figured it had to have been the ghost of Mr. Kitty, hanging around because he was curious about the new kittens in the building and wanted to meet them. He must have been satisfied they were settling in so well because there haven’t been any more encounters.

    My sister, Em, still has Ollie (left) and Mel (right). They’re all grown up now and are still just as adorable and spoiled rotten as they ever were.

6 Critter Encounters from Paranormal Animals of North America for Shadowrun (1st Edition)

So how would you use some of the weird critters here?

Sprawl Sites, the inspiration for this post, had critters show up in half of their Magic Encounters (Fire Elemental, Sasquatch, Eagle Shapeshifter, Vampire, Ghoul, Griffin).

I can be a shadowrunner...

Here are some I’ve thought of from PANA. 

1. Agnes is a little old lady with a lost “cat” and wants the team to find it for her. The catch? It’s a Talis Cat, and it’s been using its pseudo-shapeshifting abilities to prey on squatters in the Redmond Barrens. Can the runners find Agnes’s poor little kitty before it kills again?

2. Mr. Johnson said this job was to be a quick corporate extraction, null sweat. What he didn’t tell you is that the target you’d be extracting is a stonebinder, a bat whose saliva turns your flesh into calcium carbonate. Can the runners get one out of an exhibit at the Aztechnology Complex without being petrified?

3. The runners arrive at an abandoned church in the Puyallup Barrens for a meet with their new fence. They are in for a surprise when they discover a nest of gargoyles that have take up residence, and they are not happy at being disturbed. 

4. Your street doc, Pamela, has not been answering your calls. Tracking her down, you discover them in the early stages of transforming into a loup-garou. She thinks finding the specimen that infected her might lead to an antidote. Can the team find patient zero before Pamela fully succumbs to the virus?

5. Your team is slogging through the muck along Puget Sound in Tacoma, trying to sneak aboard a cargo ship carrying the newest Fairlight cyberdecks when bright lights suddenly appear behind you. You are initially relieved when you see it’s not Eagle Security, but rather a half dozen very close and very hungry corpselights. Are those decks worth the Essence drain?

6. Your shaman’s talismonger warned you that this Mr. Johnson was a little... different. Meeting him in a forest clearing in Snohomish, you see why: it’s a Man-of-the-woods. It cannot leave its grove, but needs a team of runners to bring a certain Gaeatronics executive to him. He cannot offer nuyen, but the promise of a potent magical item if the task is accomplished before the next new moon.

Good Evening

Today I shall be liveblogging my viewing of Youtuber Sir Spooks’s video “20 Scary Videos You Should Not Watch Alone.” Contrary to the advice given in the title, I will be watching them alone.

Here we go.

Video 1:

Here we are treated to some lovely French shenanigans as a group of friends enters the woods and spots a cute little kitty, or perhaps a fox? The real terror of this comes from the fire hazard as they haphazardly wave their torches around some dry brush. Not a very smart plan.

Video 2: 

A friendly poltergeist who wants to check out the wares at an old antiques shop. He opens some cupboards, knocks some things over, and plays with a miniature wheelchair. The real terror of the video? Why is that wheelchair so small...

Video 3:

Two friends riding bikes come across a phantom who just sort of stands there. Doesn’t even do anything. Could pretty easily be a person in a costume, admittedly. The real horror? That anyone thinks this is real ghost footage. Also the potato video quality. 

Video 4:

Two trespassers get caught by a security guy who calls the cops on them. ...I’ll be perfectly honest, I don’t know what was intended to be scary about this one in the first place. 

Don’t trespass, kids.

Video 5: 

Three young children encounter what is either a yeti or a creeper dressed in a thick winter coat. Probably the latter. That said, the real scary part of the video is the fact that three unsupervised young children were allowed to play on abandoned metal tubing in the middle of the woods on a day so foggy you can’t see more than ten feet in front of you. 

Video 6:

A Dutch War of the Worlds fan hears ‘walking sounds’ in the middle of the woods at night, spots an animal, and decides it was definitely an alien. The true horror is how he came to that conclusion from a video lit by only a single flashlight, and not very well at that.

Video 7:

Two Japanese teens hang out on a creepy abandoned playground and spot a ghost. This one’s actually pretty creepy by itself. Real? Probably not but Japanese horror videos are in a league of their own. 

Video 8:

Canadian outdoorsman goes outdoors and encounters a strange animal which is brown, shaggy, and growls. It couldn’t be a bear because it was about 7 feet tall, and everyone knows bears only get to be about 2 feet maximum. /s

Video 9:

ET lands on some guy’s trailer in the woods. The real moral of all these videos seems to be “don’t go in the woods” 

Video 10:

English woman films a shadow outside at night while the Flintstones plays loudly in the background. Maybe the ghost just wanted to watch the Flintstones? 

Video 11:

Two football-playing youngsters enter a rousing game of hide-and-go-spook with some mysterious disappearing thing. The real scary bit is that they left their poor doggo alone when they went to go play with the otherworldly being. :( Poor dog...

Video 12:

Man and Friend go outside to hunt some aliens and encounter a living breathing Camera Glitch which makes noises like a bad horror movie sound effect. And then they run. I mean, I would. 

Video 13:

Ghost hunters learn that the real horrors of this world come not from ghosts, but from MUGGERS. You heard it here last, folks. Ghosts can’t rob you but muggers sure can. 

Video 14:

Dan Bell and Friend hear some Very Scary Noises. Mostly just a thumpin’ and a bangin’ and a rattlin’ around. Could possibly be just random old house noises...? Certanly not.

Video 15:

The Flash goes streaking. Yeah I don’t even really know what to say about this one, it’s just a naked man running alongside a car. Which is honestly more funny than scary.

Video 16:

Vincent encounters Creepy Stuff in his backyard. This includes him almost getting crushed by a giant boulder (?) and a phantasm knocking very impolitely upon his door. Vincent should probably consider moving into a different house.

Video 17:

Several friends play a board game in the pitch dark at night (as you do) when a Creature of Hell decides he wants in on this fun and shows up near them. I would’ve let him play too, I mean, come on. Don’t want to be a rude host!

Video 18:

Campers come across drunk person creeping around in the woods. Scary? Maybe. Bizarre? Sure. Paranormal? Probably not, but they seem to be having their fun with it.

Video 19:

John the Trespasser breaks into some guy’s house and is startled when the guy decides to yell at him to leave. Granted, the house was ‘supposed’ to be abandoned but. Really, John. Homeless people have lives too.

Video 20:

A historical society decides to run security footage late at night, during the time the ghosties dance. Oh, how they dance. And the historical society gets it all in full view.

I feel so helpless when I want to do a hundred things and accomplish a thousand big dream goals. I know that I have a lot of passion but not that much energy and some debilitating factors. I am incredibly thankful and fortunate to have it as good as I do. I want to recognize that more often and stop complaining.

Last night, I hung out with a irl friend for the first time in a long time. Old friend from high school. We weren't super close, but close enough to remember each other, hung outside of school a few times and I think had at least one sleepover with.

To my surprise they are totally down to ghost hunt with me! I am so excited and terrified at the sametime. This has been my passion since my Mum told me about her first paranormal encounters.

I spend a lot of time watching youtube ghost things and angry grandma/angry grandpa, throw a few dance videos and witchy ones in there. This is my number one fear is to see a ghost but it has been my interest as long as I can remember.

I also went to my very first witch ritual at a wiccan temple. Most of the people were a lot older but could probably teach me so much. It was so great. So different. More focused on working all of our energy for a purpose. That was also awesome.

I feel like the reason I've been stressing is because I haven't had much time to do the things I love. Creating things is a huge outlet and I should make more time for it. I feel my life is almost soul less when I'm not creating something.

But I will be working this next month on establishing a more solid practice with my witch practice to help aid me and protect me for when I ghost hunt. I will be putting it on YouTube. But I need to at least have time to really ground myself and research my first locations I want to do. So, I will be setting a date soon from a month from now to do it.

I also need to research how to do it, how to protect myself, how to protect others, editing. One thing I hate about doing youtube videos is the editing process. It's so hard and boring!! Haha.

But these are some of my goals for my ghost kitty persona. Hope you guys are looking forward to it because I am and I will be filming/documenting it.

Spooky “would you rather” tag

I wasn’t tagged or anything, but I saw “The book pusher’s” video she created on booktube and wanted to jump along ! 😈​ 

1. THRILLERS OR SUPERNATURALS (?) I do like to read both of them ..but if I HAD to pick one i’d choose supernatural ! Specifically paranormal. 

2. GHOSTS OR ZOMBIES  Ghosts all the way, see question 1 :p but preferably one of thoses “real encounters” stories though,

3. VAMPIRES OR WEREWOLVES I don’t own any of either, but i’d prefer vampire I think 

4. WITCHES OR DEMONS  Demons, as I don’t think I have any witch books yet on my shelves .. 

5. WOULD YOU RATHER READ A BOOK WITH 13 CHAPTERS OR READ A BOOK WITH A BLACK CAT ON THE COVER?  Both won’t bother me but I think the 13 chapters has a more spooky vibe to it rather than just having a black kitty on it

6. WOULD YOU RATHER READ A SPOOKY BOOK IN THE DARK WITH ONLY A CANDLE FOR LIGHT OR BY YOURSELF IN A LOCKED BRIGHTLY LIT ROOM? Since I am claustrophobic & read in the middle of the night anyway i’m gonna go with the candlelit one as the locked room is a big no no ..

10 Best Laika Animation Characters, Ranked | ScreenRant

Known for projects like Coraline, Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings, LAIKA is one of the most groundbreaking animation studios today. Characters in LAIKA feature films are complex and far from perfect, and the struggles they face often end in unexpected twists. Villains are almost never what the seem in LAIKA films and neither are heroes.

Like any good story, the character is the heart of a LAIKA movie, and the company has given fans some of the most interesting, relatable characters over the years. While many animated films portray the hero in a purely positive light, LAIKA isn't afraid to embrace a little bit of darkness, which is why their features are so much fun to watch.

10 Mr. Link, Missing Link

Demonstrative of LAIKA's famous "character who isn't what you would expect," Mr. Link, the "Bigfoot" of their latest film, Missing Link, is a wonderfully polite intellectual. An auto-didactic learner, he puts the standard Sasquatch myth to shame. His shyness is also charming for this particular character, although it makes sense for Bigfoot to be shy since he's so elusive in the first place.

Many of LAIKA's best characters are also brought to life by strong voice actors, and Zach Galifianakis does not disappoint in this role. He fully commands the audience's attention as the refined Sasquatch of the movie.

9 Fish, Boxtrolls

The Boxtrolls is practically Oliver Twist... with trolls. And much more. It's not LAIKA's best work, but it's filled with lots of imagination, tropes turned onto their heads and one of the most adorable surrogate fathers in history. Fish is an unsuspecting, shy troll who has no idea he's going to become a parent to a human boy, but he lovingly cares for him in a way that's unexpected from a monster, or totally expected from a LAIKA movie.

Fish is even captured himself, so his son has to save him. The curious inventor, voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, isn't a typical leader, but he's kindly and caring, qualities we often see in LAIKA heroes.

8 Courtney, Paranorman

It's not common for LAIKA to use a cliche trope in a movie, but many of the trope characters in Paranorman surprise us. Jock Mitch has a boyfriend in a beautiful reveal that was so casual yet fitting in a film about stereotypes, fear, and mob mentality. Bully Alvin ends up being an okay ally. Witch Agatha isn't who she seems to be at all.

But it's cheerleader Courtney, who is annoyed by her little ghost-seeing brother, who turns out to be his most fierce supporter. She pep talks him, holds his hand and scolds the entire town when her own parents can't protect Norman and helps save the day. The characters' bodies in the film are also fantastically different, destroying the perfect shapes and sizes cartoon characters often have.

7 Beetle, Kubo And The Two Strings

While Kubo is the hero of his own titular quest, and he's a lovely character who ultimately gets his answers, it's his parents' story that is so awe-inspiring in the film. The whole movie is an example of redemption and family love, even when it seems as if all is lost, and Beetle, the funniest character of the movie, is at the heart of it.

Cursed to take the form of a beetle and lose his own memory, Beetle is heroic and loving, and when his true identity becomes clear, it is nothing short of goosebump-inducing. It's one of the best love stories in animation, even if the film isn't a love story itself.

6 The Other Mother, Coraline

One of the most terrifying villains of all time is from a LAIKA film. To be fair, The Other Mother, also known as the Beldam, was written by Neil Gaiman in the equally terrifying, if often different, young adult novel of the same name, but she really came to life in the most nightmarish way in the movie.

The Other Mother takes our deepest desires and turns them into a horrible reality, which kind of ruins the entire world. That's the whole theme of Coraline as her fake world crumbles around the heroine, demonstrating that real life can never be perfect and the stuff of our dreams may not be what we really want in the end.

5 Neil, Paranorman

Irritable bowl syndrome, ownership of a kitty cat lunch box and sweating when you walk don't sound like the characteristics of your usual hero, but Norman's unlikely best friend, Neil, really isn't an average hero. He's a wholesome, adorable kid who is regularly bullied at school yet maintains a positive, even realistic, outlook. He embraces Norman's weirdness when his own family can't seem to do the same, and he stands by his side even when he's scared.

Neil is representative of every kid. He deserves friendship and fun no matter his eccentricities, as do all children, and he's portrayed in such a sweet way that he reminds us that everyone is worthy of love.

4 Winnie Portley-Rind, The Boxtrolls

Winnie Portley-Rind is not all that likable as a character, which is why she's fantastic. She's everything moviegoers see in a standard boy child, from her assertiveness to her rebelliousness. She's not the "feisty girl," but almost abrasive, even aggressive, demonstrating that these qualities aren't only for male heroes.

LAIKA doesn't make the same trite characters, but they go beyond that, creating highly imperfect people with whom audiences can relate. They don't need saccharine-sweet girls who make an inspiring remark here or there when they're happy to portray the humanness of each character with a multi-faceted approach.

3 Sariatu, Kubo And The Two Strings

Kubo's mother Sariatu is one of the most beautiful characters ever written. Between her real identity and the one she adopts to assist him on his quest, she is incredibly brave, yet her memory issues hinder her ability to parent and care for Kubo, who has to become the parent.

As more of Sariatu's story is revealed, particularly through her alter ego, and the audience realizes what sacrifices she has made, a seemingly simple animated feature becomes an incredible epic journey worthy of its 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's good storytelling with amazing characters, with Sariatu at the top of the list.

2 Coraline, Coraline

Coraline is one of the most beloved of LAIKA's films, and while the Neil Gaiman-penned classic is a bit different from the animated feature, both portray one of the best heroines of all time. Coraline is a bit annoying. She makes mistakes, she gets into trouble and she ultimately could have prevented everything that happened to her family had she not been so bored and curious. That's why she's brilliant.

Coraline knows she has to rescue her real mom and dad even when the Other world seems too good to be true, as she soon discovers. She has to be brave, tricky and wise in order to solve the puzzle and stay alive, and it's more refreshing than most animated features about girls.

1 Norman, Paranorman

The best LAIKA character ever written is the brooding loner Norman, whose unique paranormal abilities render him an outcast. He's a typical goofy kid who is unable to connect with others because of his abilities, which is only one of the many symbolic themes of this film.

Norman's sense of responsibility, ability to live with how poorly his own family misunderstands him and positive attitude toward the ghosts he encounters every day make him a wonderfully complex character. Even though he's scared, and he owes the town who has judged him nothing, he sets things right with compassion in a way none of them could have done. He's also BFFs with his dead grandma, which is heartwarming.
