Great meeting at Sandgate, must remember to get a photo of the venue to show you where we are meeting these days.
As Kim mentioned in the newsletter we had quite an extensive show and tell.
Helen received a lovely birthday card made by Alison
Rly brought along this piece awaiting the fabric shells
Helen made this into a birthday card that Jill received, and she loved it so much she had it framed
Sue received this birthday card made by Jan
Kym showed her WOM piece, a map of the region
This is a detail shot of Alison’s COOTs piece
Detail shot of Jill’s WOM piece
Then the work everyone was doing: Sue demonstrated her fabric shells to three members. Ryl pursued making a few, but had a few troubles with her machine.
Finished shells detail of class sampler
Some of the shell making parephenalia
Sue having forgotten her camera (Yes, true, sadly). Add to this some weird stuff going down with her phone-  amongst other things to do with the mute button, the phone camera did some weird stuff and at one point got stuck on taking photos. (I had to delete 150 + photos from my photostream! ARRRGh. Those dead photos bumped a lot of real ones out…. ho hum….. I don’t suppose it matters…. might need a new phone in the very near future……. )
Miraculously though, there were a few more pics that did work….
Detail of Sue’s variegated fairy wren
Jill was adding more quilting to her WOM piece.
breinda working on her WOM
Helen persevering with her boro slow stitching
Kim finally at the binding stage of her tree skirt
Ryl preparing fabric to make shells
No prizes for guessing who this work belongs to…
Di working on her next embroidered box
Helen made her usual delish morning tea – ginger kisses extraordinaire and her specialty gluten free chocolate cake – yuumm!!
We all have a deadline to meet at our November meeting… for some of us, that isn’t going to happen because life occasionally gets in the way, and we can’t do everything all of the time! But I am sure we can play catchup over the next few months…
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. (Lao Tse)
October 2018 Great meeting at Sandgate, must remember to get a photo of the venue to show you where we are meeting these days.

PFW AW17 - Day 8
Ellery
Sleeves were exaggerated, fabrics were combined, and collars were enlarged to produce an eclectic collection built on the basis of volume and texture.
Originally from Sydney, Kym Ellery’s designs often have a bohemian enforcement behind them. This season is no different with oversized flares and bell-sleeve blouses contributing to the hippy aesthetic. A psychedelic streak ran through the collection and was most apparent in swirling tie-die prints, boots with perspex heels inspired by lava lamps, and a coat dress made of french lace with a kaleidoscopic latex finish.
“The inspiration was all about this traditional bourgeois woman who goes on this psychedelic trip and has an electric awakening,” the designer explained.
There were also some more refined, serious pieces in the collection. Referencing the famous Avenue Montaigne, known as La Grande Dame of luxury shopping destinations, there were some well-tailored options with a business-first aesthetic. Double breasted jackets, blazers, and tailored trousers were all noted on. A show stopping piece was a head-toe white, brown, and black fur coat.
  Chanel
Chanel’s AW17 fashion show made history by choosing to go where no other fashion house has gone before.  By taking inspiration from space travel, Karl Lagerfeld produced a collection which was out of this world. The spectacle took place in the centre of the Grand Palais, in a makeshift space station entitled ‘Centre De Lancement No 5’. The area played home to an enormous rocket, reminiscent of the Earth observation satellite, which provided a focal point for in the showcase. At the end of the show, the rocket was raised into the air to the sound of Elton John’s Rocket Man, as white smoke swept along the front row.
Lagerfeld has clearly anticipated the coldest of winters later this year, with layered up models wearing gleaming moon boots, wrist warmers branded with the Chanel logo, and metallic quilted blankets. Tweeds were woven with berry reds, and mixed silver and bronze tones formed outerwear. Necklines were indicative of space suits, while skirts were replaced with knee length city shorts.
The fashion house’s DNA could still be seen in the collection through their iconic dogtooth print, and shift dresses. Nods were given towards the 1960’s and British supermodel, Twiggy through the models gravity-defiant bouffant hair and twiggy-style eyeliner.
  Moncler Gamme Rouge
The setting of Moncler Gamme Rouge’s catwalk show reflected Giambattista Valli’s theme and inspiration perfectly. The runway was set around an autumn foliage of fallen leaves and mossy plants. A video travelling around a forest, apparently set in Canada, was projected onto the walls, which brought the room to life, and made you feel as though it was reality. The theme was translated into the pieces predominantly through floral print, which put a dainty, romantic spin on the outdoorsy aesthetic. The delicate pattern was seen on puffer jackets, burgundy nylon jackets, and shift dresses. Tweed jackets, Fair Isle knits, and windbreakers were all also part of the collection, which continued to add to the alfresco ambiance. Much of the lineup put a dainty, romantic spin on outdoorsy-ness, but there was a robust, sporty contingent too, much of which felt more relevant. A V-neck ski sweater with a striped neckline under a big fur coat, for example; a red-and-black buffalo-plaid workwear jacket, and a nifty red-and-white ski jacket-dress with a fur hood and drawstring waist that gave it a fit-and-flare silhouette.
 Paul and Joe
Paul and Joe direct their clothes at women who are laid-back and relaxed, yet fearless in attitude. Their AW17 collection reflects this by pairing delicate, feminine fabrications with fierce embellishment. Oversized silhouettes and robust shapes act as the heart of the collection in which pearls are appliqued onto, and embroidered floral motifs adorn denim separates.
This season their aesthetic is less sport-chic and more rock chick. “I wanted something extremely urban but also extremely luxurious” designer, Sophie Mechaly explained backstage. This was seen in the collection through the use of leather and velvet in tuxedo’s and ankle-length trench coats. The floral prints Mechaly has become so well known for were present with one model coming down the catwalk wearing a knee-length dress and coat paired with wellington boots and a shoulder bag, all unified by the same flowered pattern. The collection covered all option ranging from daytime to nightwear. Dresses were soft and floaty while jumpsuits and trousers were slightly edgier with strong tailoring and  metallic hues shining through. A transparent lace blouse was adorned with an arrangement of rhinestones and pearls, bringing in an ultra-feminine touch to the largely androgynous lineup.

I missed WIP Wednesday so here on Fuck it friday have an update on my Buckley siblings pink swear embroidery!!
I haven’t worked on it in months but last week I was watching cricket so I had the time to make some progress!!
Tumblr media
Still a very long way to go but I’m happy with how it’s going - just excuse the wrinkles etc - I literally just pulled it out the hoop to photograph!!

Thank you all for the likes reblogs and comments - I’ve loved reading your responses to the finished piece so I thought I’d show you the piece as it was in progress so you can see the full process I went through to make it happen!
Starting with - a reference picture!
Tumblr media
I made a outline drawing from the reference picture (I did this one while I was at the cricket here you can see it in progress) 😎
Tumblr media
Then I use a light box to transfer the outline onto my fabric. I like to embroider on a fairly fine but medium weight linen - it holds together well but has distinct holes so you don’t end up ripping through threads as you work!
Once the outline is drawn I started outlining areas with back stitch before beginning to infill with a single colour. Below you can see my progress on Oliver’s arm - I tend to change colours as I’m working to stop me getting annoyed or bored - hence the white and black and not of grey you can see having been done.
I have several different sized hoops, but this small one is my favourite as I like the tension I can get on the fabric!
Tumblr media
I did find sewing with white on white frustrating so the shirt sleeve got left for a bit - that’s the beauty of embroidery like this though - you can move around and do different sections depending on your mood!
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed being able to play with texture as well - I chose to use satin stitch on the sleeves and ground - using different angles to create depth.
Tumblr media
While the flesh of Oliver’s arm and hand and Ryan’s hand I went with a more textured look using ‘random’ stitch placement. This gave me the texture and the ability to build up the shading in more detail than satin stitch would’ve allowed - giving me the more painterly look I was after.
I’ve included a picture of the back of the work so you can see is similar to the front - I live looking at the back of pieces!!
Tumblr media
Once some of you helped me decide on the text - I added that - it’s my handwriting for this one - I wrote on paper first then transferred it the same way I did the outline of the arms!
Tumblr media
Then I just carried on stitching, and stitching, and stitching! Sometimes at the cricket (good light!!) and sometimes at home - I brought a 6000k white light lightbulb for one of my lamps so I could continue seeing in the evenings when it got dark!
Tumblr media
When finally finished I washed the embroidery - in Luke warm water with a tiny amount of washing up liquid- to remove the grease and sweat that would’ve transferred from my hands onto the fabric and threads - this needs removing before mounting as it will start to discolour the fabric over time!
Tumblr media
And then I mounted the final piece so it looks like this!! - this was the first time I tried mounting anything myself and it’s not perfect (the ‘yeah’ is a bit wonky) but I’m happy with it 😎
Tumblr media
Hopefully this is interesting! I’ve just started my second piece - the sister piece to this one and I’ll share pictures as I go - starting tomorrow with my terrible sketch!

Now that the parcel has finally been freed from customs and been delivered I can show you all something I made for Emma @xxfiction-is-my-realityxx as a present to celebrate her graduation because I’m so proud of wha t she achieved!
Meet Buck and Eddie line embroidery in the style of funko pops!!
Tumblr media
It was so much fun to do an embroidery that was easier, used different and brighter colours! The neon was fun to use, but I really loved that I found reflective embroidery thread so the piece will catch the light!!

Embroidery project update
Haven’t done one of these in a little while as moving house really eats into ones sewing time - who knew 😂
Anyway - I’ve managed to spend about 15 hours sewing since the last embroidery update and I’ve got Bucks tattooed bands in place and I’ve started the base colour until for Maddies sleeve - I’m very excited to build the texture and shading into this sleeve the burnt oranges are going to be great to work with!

So last update I was on the beach, this update I’ve been at the cricket!!
I’ve managed to get a really good amount of sewing done while watching a 4 day game and I had a lot of interest from fellow spectators wanting to know what I was doing and what it was going to be - I even managed to convince a couple of them to give 911 a try, but they were all fascinated by the concept of shading using thread!!
Tumblr media
As you can see - Maddies sleeve is now at the point where I’ve finished the base colour and I’m onto the shading! It’s going to take a fair amount of time to build this up, but I’m feeling pretty good about where it’s going and how it’s looking!
Tumblr media
It’s so satisfying starting to see texture begin to build up and give depth to where creases and folds are in the fabric of that sleeve - I’m still mostly in the laying out the rough outlines of where the creases are, which is why it looks a bit weird and thin at the moment, but once they’re in place I can really start to build up the colours and hopefully it will look like a fabric sleeve once it’s done!
I think my current total is just over 100 hours of work, so this one might end up taking more time than the buck and Eddie one!!

Embroidery project update!
I’ve embroidered the text and the outline of Maddie’s sleeve!
Tumblr media
So the black dotted outline around the edge is there to help me keep things square - so that I don’t over stretch the fabric while it’s in the frame!
The next thing to do is outline all the skin areas - this will be a bit different from the sleeve outline because I don’t want the same sort of edge - skin is a little less defined - so I will use a running stitch like the black dotted line that will be more easily absorbed into the proper stitching!
With that done it will be time to start infilling - that’s when it starts to look like progress is slow!!

Would people be interested in seeing progress updates on my next 911 embroidery?!
I can show you the buddie survivors progress pictures if y’all are interested, but I’m thinking of maybe showing the full journey as I create my next piece - the Buckley siblings pinky swear - from image through to the final piece.
It’s not going to be quick and updates would be maybe every couple of weeks - depending on how much I get done around real life!

New embroidery project time!
I said I’d do regular updates on this project so you can see my process and progress! Gonna try to post something once a week, but we’ll see how I go - I have a fair amount of real life stuff happening in the next couple of months so I might not get much done for a little while!
Tumblr media
Here we have my drawing of the Buckley siblings pinky swear which is going to be the companion piece to my last embroidery.
You can see it’s very very rough but I’m not actually interested in it being super accurate - the entire purpose of this drawing is to create the outline for me to trace onto the fabric and to create a basic shading guide - basically just me looking in very broad terms where is light and where is shaded or dark - especially on the skin!!
I will be using a quote on this one too - it will be between their arms and I think I’ve settled on;
‘You’re never gonna be left behind. I promise’
I’m transferring the lines and starting the outlining today so I might do another update tomorrow!!!
If anyone would like to keep up to date with my progress you can follow either my kym embroiders or kym embroiders 911 tags as I’ll always update to them and I will keep a list of links on my master post as well - in a separate section from my costume ones!!

I’ve another Buckley siblings pinky swear embroidery update as it’s been a few weeks!!
I have to be honest I’ve not had a lot of time to do much sewing - trying to learn everything I need to know for my new job has been eating my brain, but today I went to the beach as the weather was glorious and I live close enough now to actually be by the sea on a regular basis (30minutes drive) 🙌🏻😎 so I managed to enjoy the sun and sea while embroidering away!
Tumblr media
As you can see I’m still working on the base layer of Maddies shirt sleeve, but I’ve broken the back of it now and I’m looking forward to getting it done so I can start on the shading! I have 4 days at the cricket 🏏 next week, so I’m hoping those 4 days will see the base colour done and the shading at least underway!

I am very 😡😡😡 over the fact that I just broke my last curved needle while I was stitching down my stretched embroidery so now I’m gonna have to make a trip to hobbycraft in the morning to buy more - sad times (I hate hobbycraft - I miss my local independent haberdashery)
