More 'A Fire in the Flesh' thoughts

Now that I've gotten a little bit of sleep, I have more thoughts.

JLA making such a big deal about the relationship between Attes and Kyn throughout the entirety of A Fire in the Flesh and at the very end of the book having Nyktos point out that Kyn lost his memories after Ascending (thus most likely being one of the catalysts to him being the "evil twin") makes me so scared for Malec. We still don't know what happened to make him leave Iliseeum. Between Attes and Kyn's issues and Eythos and Kolis' story, the track record for male twins in this series isn't very good.

I'm also so curious about how and why he ends up in Atlantia and how Atlantia was created in the supposedly sacred Bonelands.

There is not a thought in his mind except, "oh sh!t"

Also recently experienced my own "oh sh!t" moment, I fell while playing pickle ball and hit my head on a brick wall (literally). Thankfully, I was just brused and had no concussion, mostly because I hit the floor first and slid into the wall. My brain definitely considered it a near death experience, I had a moment of clarity between hitting the floor and the wall. Where I knew I was about to hit the wall and my head, and I really did think, "Uh oh." I think I braced my back and sholder, so I slowed down my head, but my head still bounced a bit. My butt actually got it a lot worse than my head, I burst some blood vessels, and I brused the bone. It felt like sitting with my fist under my leg, so uncomfortable, then when that finally went away, not even a day later, I pulled a muscle in my gym class, fml. Thankfully, the only thing wrong with my head (other than being neurodivergent) was that it was bruised, and I had a bump. It hurt to brush my hair for about a week.

It was a really surreal experience. The closest thing I can compare it to was the moment when I jumped out of the plane when I went skydiving, this march. Everything seems to slow down. There is a huge spike in adrenaline. It feels like looking at something beautiful. It takes your breath away, but at the same time, it is like your brain zooms into a single moment to try and accomplish something. It is like tunnel vision. You are only aware of the situation, the precived threat, and how your body can stop it. It is terrifying in the moment, but incredible in retrospect. You get to see your brain go into the zone, and it's shocking and exciting. It's the reason why thrill seekers exist, that moment of clarity.

While the way it is depicted in shows and movies is often exaggerated, you really do experience a moment of clarity when your brain thinks you're really in danger. Your body really does move faster, and on instinct, your spatial awareness goes through the roof, and your brain almost cuts focus from some of the senses in your body (when I hit the floor I heard the bang, but when I realized I was about to hit the wall I don't remember hearing anything, even though the gym was fairly loud.)

So, while there are no flash sound effects or animations, like particles or auras, Tanjiro's wild slash and "oh sh!t" moment are actually relatively realistic.

saltburn: Venetia for sure!! I've been reading a fic where her and Oliver become friends and talk on the phone together a lot, it leaves me cold by nicelittlestyleslad!!!

goslings: I still have yet to see half Nelson but Dan is definitely a character I don't think I would have even looked at if not for sascha and his amazing henry/Dan stuff!

baldurs gate: fandom has taken me from hating gale to being neutral on him tbh. he's. okay I guess

8. you hope more people will come to appreciate ___ (a ship, trope, episode, etc)

saltburn: desperately want more fics where Felix is just. such a bottom. I've read some feminization fics w him recently but they just didn't hit like I wanted. I need that man dressed like an egirl

goslings: RICHARD AND HENRY my toxic yaoi boys I love them so much

baldurs gate: we need more wyllstarion. I need them to surpass bl**dw**ve as the top astarion ship

saltburn: oh man I'm really loving the fic I'm writing for kyn, your love can do what no one else can, and I have tons written ahead for it ksfnfn

goslings: I love my richard/henry series so much. they're both such weird characters and they go together So Well, I love them, and I have a lot of fun writing them!!

baldurs gate: honestly I love everything I've written for astarion but I Especially love one I'm working on for ascended astarion and my terrible bard guy. it's awful and I'm having a blast

16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

saltburn: spoilers but. the fact that Felix looks at Oliver's lips in that one close shot in the maze. the fact that Oliver is petting his face with his thumb in the shadow of his cheek. also Oliver baring his teeth when he's silhouetted with farleigh hoooogh

goslings: not technically a character thing but the fact that ryan gosling has called himself 49% woman. I love him. also listen to Dead Man's Bones

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life?

man I could go on forever about how almost all of my friends have been met through fandom, or how I write every day because of it, or how I'm actually like learning and getting better at drawing because I want to draw certain things

fandom has also done a lot of bad for me in the form of being subjected to shitty takes and meeting a few awful people but for the most part like. I would probably not have otherwise found a sense of community anywhere else because I've been so socially reclusive my whole life

and it's helped me develop socializing skills that DO make me confident enough to talk to non fandom people and like people irl and stuff

Basically like. despite all the wildness I'm grateful that I've been able to find like-minded cool people in basically every fandom I've been in

more specifically though

saltburn: so much of the fandom is like very young adults I've noticed? but it's funny being called grandthey at age 26

goslings: the goosecoooord I love yall and I love all the stuff we do. I've written so much stuff I never would have dipped my toes in because yall have been cool and supportive and awesome

baldurs gate: astarion made me and my girlfriend bisexual and has also gently bridged my knowledge gap to dnd to the point that I could probably enjoy playing it/ttrpgs in general

finished the duviri quest. took me 6 hours because i had to repeat one chapter twice due to some hiccups but yknow whatever. this update is beautifully crafted. much to think about.

this really just a blog entry ok. some musings ft spoilers below:

The world with it's mood cycle instead of day/night is awesome. Only wish there was an explorable instance similar to how PoE, Deimos and Orb Vallis work. Haven't yet jumped into the post-quest content because my heart desires to play a bit of honkai star rail for now BUT ANYWAY- so I don't have much more to say on this.

The parts where drifter has to lead his 'mirror image' into the light were funny as shit for me because it's an entirely different character in my case ahaha Kyn looked very good in the lighting of Duviri... Hope there's going to be a captura scene so we could run around with operator too. (Edit: there is a captura scene. Finally found the NPC who sells the good stuff)

Finishing the quest and having to choose whether to continue messing around in Duviri or go to Operator's timeline had me thinking just how... underwhelming the rest of the game is gonna seem to new players who decided to start with Duviri. Even with the polished new player experience on Operator's side of things... Hate to say it, but I don't think it's enough. The still very aged bosses, and despite the fluid power fantasy combat, the grind among other dated things can and does get to a person. Maybe it's just me. I'm so spoiled by cutscenes at this point lmao.

Some improvements!! Duviri Drifter's facial expressions were funny at times but less janky than in TNW overall I think? Could be my imagination. Since I only properly customized my drifter long after I had played TNW.

ALSO The voice acting in Duviri is banger. Emotion driven. RAW. Nothing made me want to cover my ears in this. (immediately zooms in on the ending of TNW when Drifter says 'He's gone'. that line hit so far off the mark for me)

One last thing... What happens to drifter's arm afterwards? How does one come back from their own hand being mutilated like that. I mean Lotus definitely took back hers. Is drifter's hand a prosthetic now? Or are there more paradox shenanigans going on. Was it mimicry on Lotus' part.

Really need to repeat The New War now...

I finished reading through the Infinity Castle Arc a few days ago and there's something I find interesting about Upper Rank One.

Ok so.

Most of the significant characters we met had someone greet them 'on the other side.'

But Kokushibo didn't. I mean, even Douma, who didn't love anyone, had Shinobu waiting in order to confirm his demise.

The only person he might have had waiting would have been his brother, but no one came.

And I've been trying to figure out why that might be. Was it because Yoriichi didn't want to come? Or because he couldn't?

I mean, the the more the authorial / doylist reason might be because Gotoge didn't want Yoriichi showing up too much. We did get a huge flashback with him in it.

But as for an a more 'in universe' reason...idk.

It's interesting to think about from Yoriichi's possible point of view. We know he still cherished his brother but was 100% down for killing him too.

Idk if there's an answer in the next arc, but it really makes me think.

A Fire in the Flesh final thoughts

Major Spoilers (and rambling) ahead y'all. You've been warned.

[This was typed on mobile. I apologize in advance for the terrible formatting and spelling in addition to my post-book excited nonsensical ramblings.]

Excuse me while I scream and cry and bemoan the next 6 months we'll have to wait to see Sera and Nyktos and everyone again even though we literally just got the new book yesterday.

I'm so happy with where this book cutoff too. Like, there's still plenty that has to happen but there's no awful cliffhanger. The first like two thirds were a little bit of a struggle, not gonna lie, but in true JLA fashion that last third was *chef's kiss*.

I thought Nyktos was going to be my favorite character to come out of this book, as he had with the previous two, but he wasn't. It's fully Sera and by an absolute fucking mile. She's perfect.

The parallels in this book between Flesh and Fire and the Blood and Ash series were exactly what I've been hoping for. All the little pieces are starting to come together in a big way with the plot (pretty poppy, sotoria's whole storyline, why Kolis was never killed outright, etc.) but also all of the tiny little tidbits thrown in. Sera slamming her hands over her face, the cavern, how she keeps talking about how she would want to treat her kids...it was all so beautiful.

Getting to know some of the other characters better was great too. That was one of my biggest complaints, how so many of the side characters weren't fleshed out as far as they feel like they could have been. That changed quite a bit with Attes and Rhain, but even the villainous characters like Callum, Kyn, Veses, and Calliphe. The depth they're given without giving a pass to the awful things they've committed was masterfully executed.

I will say, on a very personal and petty side note, there was a severe lack of young draken in this one, and I will pout until May about the lack of Jadis and Reaver. However, that part where Sera is mostly unaware in her dreamlike state, while but she feels Jadis on her legs was just too cute for words.

Speaking of words, my GODS did Nyktos have some. I was a little worried with as little page time that boy had in the first two thirds that they weren't going to be able to flesh him out enough to satisfy, but ho mama was so wrong. Chapter 39 to finish was perfection of every kind. Heartbreaking and hot and sweet.

And if anyone has a petition going for an ASOAAB type book of Sera in stasis from Nyktos' perspective, I will totally sign it.

Seeing Sera go full Primal in the next book will be so worth the wait. I desperately need to see her talk to Ezra again too.

Pili’s Turtle Fanfic Rec List

So, I’m a huge fanfic fan and I really wanted to make a rec list for some of the amazing fics that I’ve read throughout these past two years. I have to say that when it concerns fanfiction I like things a bit more heavy and also I tend to focus on Don a lot when searching through the tags. So beware! Also, it’s long.

Anyways! Here is my rec list!

Not Our Problem by Kyn

Summary: None of them heard a goddamn thing, except for Leo. ‘Course he did. Apparently being blind had given him echolocation or magic powers or something.

Set in a future in which the Foot took over the East Coast for over a decade. The three surviving turtles have finally killed Shredder, but remain bitter, jaded, scarred, and more than a little distrusting of humanity. Lots of hurt/comfort/psychology/fraternal love/infighting. Involves a baby.

One of my most absolute favourite fics out there, even outside of the TMNT fandom. I cried so freaking much during this fic, on multiple occasions. It was just, gosh, the characterisation was really good and it felt really gritty and absolutely tragic in every way. It’s a SAINW fic, centered on the bro’s and very Angsty. Be aware, there’s a rape scene somewhere in the first 30 chapters or so, but you don’t see anything happen nor does anything actually happen. Also, there’s a bit of self harm and suicide ideation in the beginning. Just a trigger warning. Fam Centric and Angst, Family Feels and Hurt/Comfort. Multi-Chapter (Completed), TMNT 2003

Call Me What I Am by Kyn

Summary: Sheer masculinity might be half the reason Raphael has trouble following the leader. On some biological level, being the biggest, heaviest monster around might just *feel* like it ought to make him the defacto ‘alpha.’ But then Red Turtle’s strange stomach pains persist for over a week, leading Donatello to conduct an ultrasound to see if it’s cancer…

It’s not cancer. 

The remarkably unsexy fiction is inspired by the real life science of turtles. Like how a turtle’s sex is determined! Spoiler alert: It’s a lot more wibbly wobbly than in mammals, and doesn’t even use XY chromosomes.

Another fic by Kyn. This one ain’t finished and I don’t see it being finished, sadly. Tho I will still recommend the first act since it pretty much stands on it’s own. And gosh, it’s really good. Deals with gender issues. It’s Raph Centric and I just really feel for the dude. Not really Angst, it’s more of a Drama. Multi-Chapter, mix between all the different TMNT franchises except Rise of the TMNT

The Wisdom of Rats by Amicitia Revenant

Summary: Splinter never expected to be a father of such strange children. When one of them turns out to need more than he can give, a difficult decision has to be made. The consequences will haunt him and his family for years, calling into question what it means to be a good parent. First in a trilogy.

This fic is so good! You guys! This fic is really good! Ah, and even better, it’s the first in a trilogy and it’s all really good! I really adore the characterisation of everybody, I love the consequences that ripple throughout the series, I love how tragic and intriguing the story is. It has captivated me from the start and made me look forward to every saturday since it always updated that day. Don is a treat, I love how conflicted Raph is throughout, Leo is so lost half the time and Mikey just really wants everybody to be happy. Also just, so much parental love. It really is just a freaking interesting and captivating read. Be aware, it takes place in 2003 and certain mindsets can be a bit dated here and there, but it works since those things keeps things more realistic and accurate. Also! Xenobiology! A lot of it! Lastly, the ending’s kinda dissapointing, but like, yeah, I still love the whole experience regardless. Don Centric but also Fam Centric, Hurt/Comfort and Family Feels. Multi-Chapter (Completed), TMNT 2003

Dark Winter by Amicitia Revenant

Summary: January in New York can be brutal. A snowstorm shuts down the city, even as the creeping cold paralyzes the Turtles themselves.  Splinter/April, but only as friends.

Another great fic by the same author. I really like their work you guys, they got multiple fics that I absolutely adore, but this one is just another one of my favourites. It deals with loneliness but in a very calm and comforting manner, and I don’t know you guys, I just love it. It’s very sweet and April and Splinter really should star in more fics together. Splinter and April Centric, Family and Comfort. One-Shot, TMNT 2003

Ah, okay, so I actually commissioned this fic and I will forever be able to gush about it. It’s just absolutely perfect if I have to say so myself and hits all the beats that I had wished for. But yeah, this fic is a steady decline when it regards Donnie’s well being, have fun! Donnie Centric and it’s primairily Angst. Multi-Chapter (Completed), Rise of the TMNT

Afterlife Inc by Mickis

Summary: A silly fic consisting of only two chapters. Basically, it’s a humorous take on the afterlife, with a twist to suit our favorite bunch of mutant turtles. Oh, and BTW, this story suffers from a bad case of madness.

This fic is crazy creative! I like it a lot. There’s not much to it but a fun thought of “What if?”. There’s this kinda exasperated feeling throughout all of the fic and I have to say, I’m kinda living for it. This fic is just sure to leave you in a good mood. Raph Centric, but also Fam Centric. Two-Shot, TMNT 2003

Moonlight and Sonshine by lost-katana

Summary: How did Master Splinter come to think of the TMNT as his sons? Witness the night that changed it all as Splinter takes the passage of parenthood. [Involves twoyearold chibi turtles!]

This fic, is CUTE! It’s so cute, oh my gosh! I just, Splinter is such a dad in this one, and all the little turtle tots are just waddling about being little 2 year olds. It’s such a delight. Splinter Centric, Family and Fluff. One-Shot, TMNT 2003

Ah, this series is so excellent! It got ghosts and poltergeists and feelings of guilt and mourning, very nice! Not yet finished, but it’s being updated again so yeah. Go take a look, it’s good! Mikey Centric and Tragedy. Multi-Chapter, TMNT 2012

Wild Animals by C-Puff

Summary: When a friend asks you for help you gotta help them right? Especially when it’s not just them that’s in trouble but those they love as well right? Even when you gotta face monsters right? Even if those monsters are the ones inside you.. …right?

If you’re craving a little more Usagi in your life, I’ve got just the fic for you! This was just a generally excellent read, with the bonus that it touched on some things that I sometimes wonder about when it concerns the turtles and their friendship with that funny samurai rabbit. But yeah, this fic reads like I was reading an actual comic book instead. It just worked. Fam Centric with Usagi mixed in, Suspense and Family. Multi-Chapter (Completed), TMNT 2003

I remember really feeling for Lil’ Don in this fic. Really good look in what it’s like growing up gifted in an environment where that doesn’t have the actual room to grow. They also got an excellent SAINW fic but that one hasn’t been updated in a while so I don’t know. Don Centric and kinda Tragic. One-Shot, TMNT 2003

Zombie fic, zombie fic! In all honesty, all Werepirechick’s fics could be on this list. They have just so many excellent fics out there. But I really just loved the atmosphere of this one. Nice and contained, incredibly tragic and bittersweet. Defs worth a read. Also, check out their other fics for more Apritello action. They even have Casey joining the fun, haha! Seriously, this fic is just mean. It’s really mean! So, if you’re feeling up for feeling hella frustrated, I’ll recommend reading this one. You won’t be in for a good time, but it will still be an excellent read. So go on, enjoy yourself. Cody Jones and Don Centric, Angst. One-Shot, TMNT 2003

This Whole Situation by fowo

Summary: “I’m not gay,” Raph said.

“You like girls, then?” Donnie asked.

Raph made a face. “Humans are weird.”

Donnie smiled. “They are,” he agreed. “But,” he added pointedly, “you like Casey.”

“Course I do,” said Raph, crossing his arms. “He’s my best friend.”

“Well. If it’s that easy, why the huffing and hawing?”

—It’s not that easy.

***This is the story of how it’s absolutely no big deal for Raphael when Casey comes out as bi. Really. It isn’t. Why would it be?

But it kinda is.

Raph struggling to express his feelings, what more could you want. Just, a really nice mash up of different incarnations of the turtles and it feels very authentic and true to the source. I just, really like how everybody is written. Tho I believe this fic will get spicy later on, so be aware of that. Also, xenobiology, but personally that just makes me like this fic more. They’re turtles you know. Let them be turtles. Raph Centric and also Young Adult Angst. Multi-Chapter, mainly TMNT 2003 with some Rise of the TMNT and other incarnations mixed in. It’s own thing really.

Encounters by wytchen-n-stychen

Summary: A series of one-shots featuring rooftop conversations between child!April and turtlechild!Donatello. Short, sweet and plotless.

This fic is SO cute! Ah! Just, lil’ Donnie and April interacting with each other, it literally melts my heart. It didn’t get completed or anything, but it wasn’t really necessary. The summary says it all really. Just a nice crossover between Rise and 2012, the turtles feel in characters and the pacing is just perfect. It doesn’t feel rushed in any way, the author just wants everyone to breathe and get to interact with one another, and there is enough background interactions alluded to that you can’t help but be curious what is going on everywhere. Alright, another SAINW fic! Until now I’ve really been enjoying this author’s work, and this fic’s been looking like it has a lot of potential. I really love that it’s taking it’s time exploring the landscape and Donnie’s experience suddenly being stuck in this bleak future. Things are being kept interesting as things take a few different turns than what you would expect, and just, I like how they write Don. He’s still incredibly dorky and a bit reserved. I’m defs keeping my eyes on this one. Also they’re currently working on another fic with the Rise boys, which also seems like a good read. Don Centric and probably Angst with a lot of Family Feels. Gosh I love love love LOVE this fic! The feeling of it, the atmosphere, how far removed you are what is going on but how much information still manages to seep through. Ah, it’s good! They also got another fic that I really enjoy. It’s about if the 2012 boys got mutated into snakes instead of Karai, but it never got finished. I would say check it out as well, but be prepared to be left a bit dissatisfied. Lastly, they got more TMNT fics on Fanfiction.net, so check ‘em out there as well if you will. I felt for everybody and their confusion and I was really interested in finding out what was going on and how to solve it. Don’s just really out of it most of the fic and everybody’s worried. They have a whole lot of other fics actually that are just as good, really, check them out if you have the time because there is just this incredible niceness that they are able to convey towards the reader that warms me up with every word. Okay, so this fic is kinda disarming. Things just kinda are working out and the guys get the chance to do their thing and explore being teenagers. I liked it, it was very sweet. It ends kinda abruptly though, be aware, but the author has stated that this was their decision and that they personally didn’t feel the need to continue it. Okay, so I remember having a good time reading this fic, also it has an interesting take on the classic Human AU and features a villain from the Mirage Comics that I personally really liked. I would honestly recommend reading this one only if you are familiar with the OG comics, otherwise you will be lost. Fam but mostly Mikey Centric, Angst, Family and Drama. Fits in with my other 2k7 stories.

This fic is really just depressing, and also kinda adult, be aware. I personally don’t think the 2007 movie is any good. The plot is bland and it sucked most of the fun out of the characters. But thinking about what things must have been like before Leo got back in the picture is always sure to make me feel down, and actually ends up intriguing me more. This fic really captures that feeling of being stuck in your mid-twenties while life isn’t really offering you much. Kinda resentful. Mikey and Don Centric, Angst. One-Shot, 2007 Movie

This fic felt like an actual episode, also, haha, Don gets to be a nerd way too little in Rise! He is a nerd! A dorky, uncool theatre kid that corrects wiki articles in his spare time. The rest of the bros are also a delight and April gets some well deserved screen time as well. So if you miss Rise and are up for a good time, I would highly recommend this one. Don Centric, Fluff. This follows our reader (who is Giyuu’s younger sister) and Sabito as they get older. It starts off when they’re small kids, and goes from there.

The horrors that led to where (y/n) is now is unforgivable. In just a few short years she has lost her mother, her home, and has been forced to grow up.

The brutal murder of her mother not only scared her and Giyuu, but Sabito as well. With him not having much of a home or family to begin with, he too felt the lost of a mother. This became the drive for the two boys to become Demon slayers.

The three were blessed to be found and saved by a man named Urokodaki. He took them in and from there trained Giyuu and Sabito. The trio became closer than ever. (Y/n) learned many things, such as medicine, cooking, and keeping a home intact. She would watch the boys train and beg to be part of it. Giyuu was against it, not wanting his little sister be put in further danger. However, when the boys were up the mountain, Urokodaki would secretly train her.

When it came time for them go to final selection, she cried. She helped make a big feast for them the night before their leave. It was heart aching for her to think of the worst. She had heard Urokodaki warn them about his last student, how she didn’t make it back, and that terrified her.

That night, as she laid down, she heard someone toss and turn. Urokodaki was in the other room, so it must be either Sabito or Giyuu.

She turns over, seeing Sabito stir in his sleep- restless and sweating. Quietly getting out of her bed, she tip toes pass her brother.

“Sabito, are you okay?” She kneels next to him and lays a gentle hand on his cheek.

His eyes shoot open and he gasp desperately.

“Hey, it’s okay Sabito. You’re here. You’re safe”

He meets her eyes with his, and places his hand over hers. Her warm hand was comforting in the cooling air against his cheek. He sighs and gives a weak smile to her.

“I’m sorry I woke you (y/n), please, go back to sleep. I’m fine now thanks to you.”

Her heart flutters through the saddening pain. At the age of 9, she still has her hopes set on Sabito.

“Sabito... You come back. Okay? Take care of Giyuu for me; and please, take care of yourself!” Her whispers were passionate. Tears swell in her eyes and start to run down her face.

Sabito reaches out with his free hand and wipes the tears from her. His lavender eyes turn soft.

“Don’t worry. Giyuu will be safe, and I still have you to take care of, so I’ll make sure I come back-“ his smile turns smug, “if I don’t, how am I supposed to marry you?

(Y/n) hoped it was dark enough for him not to see her cheeks flare, but she already knew he saw right through her. He quietly laughs it and pulls his hand back from her teary face. Yet, he keeps the other that lays over hers on his face in place. Giving her knuckles a gentle rub with his thumb.

The leaves dancing in the trees soothed the quiet air between them.

“Here, I was going to give it to you tomorrow, but I want to do it now.” She reaches in the sleeve of her yukata and pulls out a beautifully threaded bracelet. With the yarn that Urokodaki brought from town for her, she was able to make him and Giyuu a gift. She places it in his hand.

“Huh?” Sabito sits up, trying to see what she placed in his hand. Lifting up the thread, he sees it’s beautiful colors, matching his geometric horari. He turns his attention to the sweet little girl in front of him. Still so young.

Sabito holds his precious gift tightly and reaches out to her, bringing her to his chest. A hug ✨

☀️ In the morning they say their goodbyes.

The boys start to head out. In the distance they hear (y/n)’s last shouts.

“When you both come back, we’ll celebrate your return and Sabito’s 14th birthday!”

Both Giyuu and Sabito wear their mask and bracelets for blessings, luck, and love ❤️
