so literally all the time whenever the fact that i’m butch or even more masculine i always get idk. argued with about it?

an incredibly few number of people have actually accepted the fact that i am butch. i frequently get the response of “masculine leaning something” or “oh you’re just like. androgynous or a butchy femme”

idk how to tell you this but me wearing baggy jeans, a hoodless sweater and cologne isn’t exactly meant to be super feminine presenting.

just because i could be considered pretty doesn’t make me less butch. having a longer undercut doesn’t make me less butch. i don’t even care if people agree with me about my identity but i’m tired of having to fucking defend it all the time.

and i know for a damn fact that if i was a cis woman i wouldn’t be experiencing any of this. but since i’m trans i have the option of either being hyper femme or “oooh weird gender creature”. sorry to disappoint your expectations, but that’s your fucking problem.

if someone talks about their identity or labels and your first thought is to invalidate them shut the fuck up and ask yourself why that’s your first idea. stop making that our problem.

Ya know what shout out to butches who wrestle with our butchness because we don’t fit the mold in some way. Butches who aren’t physically strong or naturally caretaking because of physical disability, who need to be cared for, who can’t hold open the door for a femme. Butches with long hair, butches with big hair, butches who express their culture via their hair. Butches who’s masculinity is shaped by their culture, who’s masculinity doesn’t fit the white eurocentric mold. Fat butches, butches with curves viewed as feminine, butches who don’t have skinny, boyish builds. Butches who don’t want to be sexualized, butches on the ace spectrum. Butches who don’t have traditionally masculine interests or mannerisms or whatever. Effeminate butches. Butches who take inspo from gay men. Butches who like the occasional dress or skirt. they start to realize that’s not what’s happening when i lead them to the “men’s” clothing section. they react with confusion, but i tell them to shut up and let me work. my efficiency and relentless chipper energy leaves them no room to protest as i load their arms with button-downs, sweaters, slacks, jeans, belts. i perch myself in the fitting room as i treat them like a paper doll, switching outfits around until i’m satisfied with their new butch wardrobe. then i drag them to the fragrance counter, testing colognes until their nose itches and their head is spinning.

next to the barbers for a haircut, the barber asks them what they want but i’m the one who answers, knowing exactly what will look good on them and how to achieve it, down to the proper clipper settings. they start to freak out when the scissors appear, they stammer and turn panicked eyes to me in the mirror, not sure if they want to go through with this but i pout and give them puppy eyes like 🥺 what, i thought you wanted a makeover? 🥺🥺 and in .5 seconds they cave. afterwards they can’t stop staring at themselves in the mirror, red in the cheeks, unsure how to feel, unable to quite believe the lengths they’ll go to for a crush.

i dress them up in one of their new date outfits and take them out to dinner, to admire my work properly. they notice that i’m touching them so much more than i did before, humming contentedly, smoothing out their shirt around their shoulders, grabbing them by the belt to pull them close, so i can breathe in their new cologne, while they discover the delight of femme nails on a freshly buzzed scalp. i beam at them, tell them how much better they look this way, and wasn’t that so fun?

recent twitter commission for the DM of a Pathfinder 2e game set in the Mwangi Expanse, a region inspired by sub-saharan African geography and cultures. This character is a friendly glassmaking and blacksmithing gnoll NPC named Stoat! The commissioner let me decide which hyena species she’d look like-- I chose to make her a striped gnoll, mostly because I wanted to do her hair. Her cloak pattern is inspired by kitenge fabric.
