The Lovely Bones book review

!!!SPOILERS!!!

As this book was published in 2002, I find it shocking I have never read this before. I was most shocked when I fell in love with this book, it being so well-written and hard to put down. This story is about a 14 year old girl who is raped and murdered by a neighbor. While that is the main plot, it really follows the lives of her family, her friends, and how she lives after death in Heaven. I personally really enjoyed how Alice Sebold describes Heaven, as it being interchangeable and different for everybody. While this story is very sad, I never found myself crying, as I do with some stories. It was heartbreaking, though. This book is full of sex, finding one's self, loss, grief, and so many other hard to talk of topics. The way her siblings grew up was a great portrayal of loss and learning to live by yourself. Her mother's affair was hard to read, personally, as all I was able to think of was how he should have focused more on finding Susie's body and not sleeping with her grieving mother. Reading her father learn to be happy again, all while having lost a child and having his wife leave, was wonderful. My favorite character, though, was Grandma Lynn. She was the glue that held the family together, and brought it back together. I do wish we had a scene of them finding her body, but all in all, this book is amazing. This is definitely worth the read.

my exclusivity will fade
today they’re picking me apart like
crows on a tire marked rodent
savoring every morsel
they gnaw off the bone
once i’ve been tenderized
they’ll move on
glancing over the carcass
teeming with maggots
every now and then
my soul has left no physical trace
so, from heaven, i’ll watch
the crows
as they flock and scatter

Vaciamos las unas en las otras nuestro dolor como agua de una taza a taza, y cada vez que yo contaba mi historia, perdía una gotita de dolor.

The Lovely Bones (2009), Directed by Peter Jackson.
Summary: This film follows the story of a teenage girl who, after being murdered, watches from her personal Heaven as her family and friends struggle to move on with their lives while she comes to terms with her own death.
Comments: this film absolutely destroyed me, I sobbed for an hour. However, there are moments of joy too. Which, I believe, is the true purpose of this story; finding joy and beauty amongst the pain and darkness.
The representation of the afterlife this film uses is very interesting and lovely to watch. Every character is incredibly human, and they each allow for representations of different kinds of grief. And, of course, the story is both horrifying and heartbreaking.
While the film takes care to be as vague as possible while also handling the subject matter delicately, every implication we see is a punch to the gut. As someone who lives in close proximity to kidnappings and murders regarding young women, this film felt incredibly real. But, at the same time, was oddly comforting in that we are shown how, even in the darkest of times, there can be joy.

Thersa, what're some of your favorite things about Jo and Brigid?
Tumblr media
"Similar to my bones, I couldn't pick just one favorite about them. How could I?"
"Jo is so smart! We both are, of course, but I've yet to find a better person to bounce ideas off of. When she has suggestions for problems in my cases, she isn't rude or patronizing. She simply thinks outside the box, in a different way from myself. The world is so loud and busy, but Joanna is a gentle moment of peace amongst the bustle. I'm not sure why anyone could think she's cold...her passion is so bright, her personality is shining, I never have to force myself to conform with her. She and I go looking for bones often, even though she isn't as fond of the collecting as I am."
"On the same vein, Brigid is, somehow, everything I'm not, in the best way imaginable. Where Jo is science smart, Bri is book smart. I love nothing more than when he reads passages aloud to me. Not because I couldn't read them myself, but because he wants me to hear from him, for my reaction. Yet, I'm never expected to be expressive or anything I'm not. He takes me as I am, as I him. I do believe he has the very first origami seal I ever made for him on his desk still...! He's soft, and gentle, and wonderfully delightful. As a bonus, he helps me handle the beetles...I always get grossed out when putting new bones in the beetle buckets...but he doesn't mind."
"They make me whole, they give me a life outside my science. I love them both...They've shown me there's more to life than death, and I'll never be able to thank them enough."

He took the hat from my mouth.
"Tell me you love me," he said.
Gently, I did.
The end came anyway.
I am sick... oh my god, this is so heart-wrenching. this same hat...

my absolute favourite thing about the kirk and spock dynamic is that the whole time you’re watching the show spock is gaslighting you into thinking that kirk is this loose canon and spock is paragon of logic keeping his captain on the straight and narrow when its very clearly the other way round. aside from being turned on by everyone and fighting like an old-timey boxer…. kirk is just like.. quite a logical, stable guy. like yeah he rules with his emotions but he’s rarely reckless or erratic, even in situations of immense pressure he’s always calm and measured. sure kirk is unhinged and insane, but we knew that right off the bat. spock on the other hand tries to hide how insanely balls to the walls crazy he is by standing next to jim and hiding all his derangement with logic. i think the reason bones beefs with spock so much because he is the only one who has noticed that spock is an absolutely unhinged individual. (jim is too busy doodling <3 mr jim spock <3 all over his briefings to notice)
