Since you're Canadian also.. I use CBD on occasion for insomnia and one marked effect for me is that I don't recall dreaming at all. Without it I usually have vivid dreams. Not sure if your nightmares are proper dreams or night terrors, but it makes my sleep feel much heavier and less.. 'brittle'. That's CBD alone btw, THC gives me awful anxiety.

I’ve wondered about CBD before, but I always worry it’s going to interact with my meds in a weird way. I’ll bring it up with my doctor next week and see what he thinks!

truth: i was looking at pictures of natalia dyer and said “WOW I’M GAY” out loud at the same moment one of my co-workers was going past my desk on her way to the bathroom. my only saving grace was that this particular coworker is a good friend and already knows i’m bi (it’s easier than trying to explain pansexuality and there’s enough overlap that it suffices for that kind of thing)

For the past year, I've made a decision to stop holding back so much, out of shyness or fear to be 'too much' or general anxiety. It hasn't been easy but it has held many unexpected surprises. I have a sense of 'existing' more. I think many would love to and benefit from hearing your thoughts and feelings as well *hugs*

I believe it about the feeling of existing more... idk if i’m in a spot where i could manage such an experiment again. it’s good to hear it’s doing good for you, though. glad it is not always doomed or disastrous. existing more, or more consequentially, or more tied into things... i’m just not very good at it (as evidenced by this incomprehensible paragraph)

tbh i’m usually fine with all this, just not being able to write anymore either... that leaves me with not much, not much in the way of words. idk.

Um... trying cocaine, probably. It was acquired by some friends of mine who lived in New York and their source seemed decently reputable, and I didn’t have that much, but I’m not sure my parents would appreciate such subtleties...

Hahaha there is no way in hell I’m doing that dare. So... Marvel’s Loki, obviously (*meet*, not date); Elizabeth Bennet (because she’s a badass and I’m not that original); and probably Gandalf (Grey or White, I’m not fussy).

you goddamn enablers. I mean, I have an article that is...hopefully going to be showing up soon? that is basically about this, so I could just wait and link you to that. 

but basically there was a post talking about how GRRM doesn’t expect his characters to be rewarded for doing the right thing, but he admires when they try anyway, and that’s actually...a very Tolkien ethos? with the idea of “the long defeat” which is something that Tolkien comes back to - the phrase appears in Galadriel’s mouth as well as in his letters - which is the notion that while there are flashes of light in the dark the world is essentially fallen, and in the process of decline. and that decline is inevitable because arda was never perfect. 

because the dissonant strain of morgoth’s rebellion was woven into the moment of creation as a part of the world, darkness is an integral part of the world’s makeup - there is no moment of “original sin” in the same way as Christianity, because the “sin” is already there. thus the fall is in some ways both inevitable and constant. the heroes of arda are in a constant losing battle. one evil may fall but another will rise.

I actually went and looked in my thesis: there are two quotes that I think taken together say a lot about Tolkien and the balance between cynicism/idealism. one is from his essay on Beowulf, “The Monsters and the Critics”, in which he claims that the poem shows “man at war with the hostile world, and his inevitable overthrow in Time”, and later:

The worth of defeated valour in this world is deeply felt. The poet looks back into the past, surveying the history of kings and warriors in the old traditions, he sees that all glory (or as we might say 'culture' or 'civilization') ends in night.

then, in “On Fairy Stories”, he writes about “eucatastrophe”

The consolation of fairy-stories, the joy of the happy ending: or more correctly of the good catastrophe, the sudden joyous “turn” (for there is no true end to any fairy-tale): this joy, which is one of the things which fairy-stories can produce supremely well, is not essentially “escapist,” nor “fugitive.” In its fairy-tale—or otherworld—setting, it is a sudden and miraculous grace: never to be counted on to recur. It does not deny the existence of dyscatastrophe, of sorrow and failure: the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of deliverance; it denies (in the face of much evidence, if you will) universal final defeat and in so far is evangelium, giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy, Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.

these two points are the poles of Tolkien, and his work is constantly pulled back and forth between them.
