« Only recently, reading Anna Funder’s “Wifedom,” did I discover a new fact (or perhaps a new theory) about “Animal Farm”: Orwell wrote it in collaboration with his first wife, Eileen. “The form of the book itself — as fable, novel, satire — was Eileen’s idea. She steered him away from writing a critical essay on Stalin and totalitarianism.” Funder cites Orwell biographer Tosco Fyvel: “If Animal Farm is a tale so perfect in its light touch and restraint (almost ‘unOrwellian’), I think some of the credit is due to the conversational influence of Eileen and the light touch of her bright humorous intelligence.”

[...] Early on, Funder tells us that “Orwell’s work is precious to me. I don’t want to take it, or him, down in any way.” But it’s hard to imagine a more ferocious takedown than the one Funder launches with her catalogue of Orwell’s appalling misdeeds. In Morocco, he asked for (and apparently received) Eileen’s permission to sleep with a very young local prostitute. After years spent attempting to seduce Eileen’s friend Lydia Jackson, he crawled into Jackson’s bed. She recalled trying to “ward him off from forcing himself on me.” He appears to have taken a rather lighthearted view of sexual assault and of his own attempts to “pounce” on women who resisted him. And he consistently undervalued Eileen’s contributions to his domestic and professional life: typing manuscripts, dealing with editors, nursing him through bouts of illness, cleaning out the latrine that overflowed, disgustingly, in their yard.

[...] The book’s most interesting section concerns the time Orwell spent fighting against Franco’s army during the Spanish Civil War — an experience he wrote about in “Homage to Catalonia.” Eileen was also in Spain at that time, leading a busy, challenging and frequently dangerous existence, working at the Barcelona office of the British Independent Labour Party, outwitting Stalinist spies, trying to help friends and co-workers who were arrested and, in some cases, executed. When Orwell was wounded at the front, she rushed to his side, but her presence there — like most of what she did in Spain — went unremarked in his book. “Orwell spends over 2,500 words telling us of his hospital treatment without mentioning that Eileen was there. I wonder what she felt, later, as she typed them.” »

A Version Of Eileen's Life:

It must all begin from the beginning; 1931 to be precise. For four years, Aurelius Dumbledore (a.k.a “Credence Barebone”), had been working for the supreme Dark Wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. As an Obscurial who managed to live to adulthood, Aurelius was an extreme rarity in the Wizarding World. Unfortunately, because of the parasitic Obscurus, Aurelius’s life still waned. Naturally, Grindelwald knew this sad fact and needed a plan, an “heir” to his weapon. 

While Grindelwald sent his numerous minions to find more Obscurials, the searches had proven to be futile for one reason or another. Eventually, Grindelwald began to come up with another idea; Obscurial or not, Aurelius was still the son of Aberforth. Thus, Aurelius was not just the last of the Dumbledore clan, but he was the nephew of Aberforth’s brother, Albus Dumbledore-Grindelwald’s main foe. Nothing could hurt Albus more than his own relative-present or future-joining Grindelwald. So it was decided, a new Dumbledore must come forth.

After much consideration, Grindelwald settled on the once-prestigious Prince family. It was said that Sacar Prince was a famous potioneer about two centuries ago. But, upon numerous competitors, betrayals and bad deals, Silvanus’s descendents struggled greatly. The latest of the lineage, Silvanus Prince and his wife, Melinoe Suspirio, was no different. Because of this, Grindelwald thought it easy to persuade the Princes’ to let their daughter, Eleousa, work for him.

In time, Aurelius and Eleousa would meet. Slowly, the two would become acquainted with each other. This was mainly due to their skills; Eleousa was impressed with Aurelius’s Obscurus, along with his romantic side. For Aurelius, he was impressed with Eleousa’s intellect, and her fascination with resurrecting the dead. Long story short, the two young wizards shared a passionate love for eachother. As a result, a baby was on the way.

Unfortunately, Aurelius would be completely unaware of his upcoming child. Shortly after a failed mission in Bhutan, Aurelius would reconcile with his father, Aberforth, and succumb to the Obscurus only a few days later.

 Sometime later, little Eileen came into the world. Unfortunately, Eleousa would die not long after her daughter was born. As a result, Eileen would be raised by Silvanus and Melinoe as if she was their daughter. Even going by “Prince” rather than “Barebone” or “Dumbledore”.

As Eileen grew up, the Prince family would see her as a disappointment. Especially as Grindelwald would reach his final downfall. In spite of her cold environment, Eileen tried making the best of things. For instance, she was loyal to her Slytherin House, was skillful in gobstones, potion-making along with spell-casting. She would often try to form a connection with her late mother by researching spells for reviving the dead. However, by the time she turned 21, she felt something absent in her life. Then, when in the Muggle World, she met Tobias Snape…

As a rough-and-tumble Teddy Boy, Tobias Snape was part of a group known as “The Web-Spinners”. Another member was Tobias’s best friend “Severe Seymour”, along with Seymor’s girlfriend, Lydia. However, The Web-Spinners weren’t the only gangs in Cokeworth as they were fiercely rivaled by the “Sweet Deaths”. During one altercation, a naive Eileen was in the gauntlet and would’ve been killed had Tobias and Seymor not stepped in. Eventually, Tobias and Eileen hit it off. 

Yet, while Eileen saw Tobias as a potential husband, Tobias saw Eileen as more of a “fling”. Disgusted, Seymour and Lydia often confronted Tobias about such a mindset. Urging him to either marry Eileen or break things off better the relationship gets even more serious. Events later took a turn when Tobias, Seymour and Lydia were at a pub-the same pub the Sweet Deaths were visiting. Thanks to his drunken boasting, Tobias had started a fight that escalated into a major catastrophe. In the end, Seymour and Lydia would be killed by the Sweet Deaths.

Remorseful and horrified, Tobias was at a loss on what to do next until he’d learn that Eileen was an witch. He begged her to bring back his lost friends but Eileen told him that resurrection isn’t what the Wizarding World does. So, Tobias made up his mind; he’ll marry her and, in turn, she’ll find a way to bring back the dead. Eileen knew not to make promises she couldn’t keep, but she could never say “No” to such a magical potential as reviving the deceased. So, in 1953, Tobias Snape and Eileen Prince would marry to the horror of the latter’s family. Silvanus and Melinoe would loathe their granddaughter for choosing a Muggle over her enchanted pure-blood; ultimately cutting her off altogether. 

In time, Tobias would quit being a Teddy Boy, move himself and Eileen to the last house at Spinner’s End along with becoming the reluctant father to a raven-haired boy, Severus. Yet, alcoholism and fruitless job-hunting would take a toll over the years. With these factors and Eileen’s failed experiments, Tobias grew more aggressive than ever before. At the expense of her own son, Eileen kept hanging on until Tobias and Eileen would eventually face Death themselves. Leaving Severus in the cold.

And my favourites of Agatha Christie's non-antagonist non-investigator non-comedy characters:

The Lee/Crackenthorpe sibling trio consisting of:

Alfred Lee, Emma Crackenthorpe. The loyal and most stable sibling, who perfectly balances the trio with the vulnerable sibling and the sassy sibling (below). The rational centre of the family that both Alfred and Emma learn to be.

David Lee, Brian Eastley. The vulnerable sibling/sibling-in-law of the trio, who spends the story looking for himself and learning not to dwell fully on past.

Harry Lee, Cedric Crackenthorpe. The sassy sibling, optimistic, adventurous and moderately chaotic. Grows to understanding or showing more responsibility.

Other than that:

Pilar Estravados aka Conchita Lopez. She's also likeably chaotic and a dark horse who turns out to be a better person than most thought.

Roger Leonidis. (I thought and decided not to include Philip after all because of him becoming a neglectful parent himself in addition to being victim of neglect, but I still find him interesting.) Roger is one of the first characters by the author I realized I could strongly identify with, so it's personal. But all Leonidis, like most of the author's family mystery characters, are psychologically interesting.

Lydia and Hilda Lee. Both unpretty, both in established relationship (happily married), both strong people (one creative and free-spirited, the other rational and motherly), both work perfectly well with their spouses in a good form of "opposites attract". Same goes for Clemency Leonidis, but she's described as more obsessive/fiercely devoted, while in Lydia and Hilda everything is fully healthy.

Gerry Wade and Ronny Devereux. Characters in a novel that wasn't meant as psychological or anything, just an adventure mystery, but they kind of transcended it for me. Two boys who wanted to play detectives or heroes and thought everything will go as easy as in their stories.

The young Boyntons. These are so real in how they and their issues are written and need their recovery so much.

Mollie Ralston. Overcoming trauma, fixing a past mistake of lack of attention by looking out to help a lost person in the present.

Leslie Casewell. Cannot say anything unspoilerific but she's also admirable for reasons.

Sarah King. I'll put her in the main list after all. Intelligent, professional and caring, occasionally maximalist (as, like Dr Gerard said, is normal for a young person).

Honourable mentions:

Rosaleen Cloade aka Eileen Corrigan. Another likeable impostor who didn't commit any more serious offence, but this time a tragic one. One of the most sympathetic "accomplices".

Frances Cloade. Probably she should have her own spot here. Or share it with Clemency Leonidis, I'm not sure. They feel similar as people, except Frances did overstep a law for the object of her devotion, unwittingly triggered a disaster and remorsed bitterly. I feel sorry for her.

Lucy Eyelesbarrow. Enthusiastic, competent, compassionate. Has no complexes about specializing proudly in a "lowly" field. Didn't get a higher spot in the list because of maybe a bit too good at everything/not given fashioned-out weaknesses to feel more real?

Summary: Once upon a time, in the deepest dwellings of the sea, was a Siren who stared up at the skies with fascination and wonder.  Once upon a time, up on the explored and unexplored lands of the world, was a Man that longed for nothing more than to sail at sea, the dangers nothing when aboard his drakkar.  Once upon a time, there was a story of war and blood spilt between two peoples. But there was also a story of built trust, forged peace, and, unbelievably, love, between the two most unlikely of beings.

Excerpt: Before he could move near close enough to speak to Anna, a war cry erupted amongst the storm. The Men’s spears jabbed through the darkness of the sea. Castiel watched, horrified, as the blood of his brethren mixed with the ocean. Anna screeched in anger, but none of the men crumpled, instead shouting louder as they pulled new blades from their furs. As Castiel swam closer, intent on helping his brothers and sisters, one of the Men jumped at the helm of the ship, shouting instructions to hurrying figures in the darkness. The wind blew through the sails, propulsing the ship forward as the Men shouted triumphantly to the Gods. Castiel swam closer, following them, staying in the shadow of the boat so that they wouldn’t see him. The Man at the helm let out another shout, and Castiel’s eyes snapped back to him only to be spellbound by what they saw. The man was tall compared to his kind, clad in armor and furs, his great sword thrust in front of him, pushing his crew onwards. The sea had drowned his figure, and although the dark skies painted him in sombre shades, he still shone like the sun, golden under the grime. His hair was the color of wet sand, hanging in wild strands around his neck, and his beard threw droplets wildly as he turned and shouted his orders, leaving smears of water that immediately blended into the furs around his neck. Black claw marks had been painted across his face in four slashes, and surrounded by the dark makeup, his eyes popped, the color of ice under a layer of freezing water. Eyes shining like the emerald jewels hidden amidst the coffers of shipwrecks. Eyes green like the sea. Castiel’s breath caught in his gills. The ship broke the wild waves, as the Man continued to push his crew forward. Castiel traced their path and sighed in dismay as he realized they were sailing toward The Pit, a cropping of rocks that were closely knit together, creating tight passages impossible to navigate for anyone lacking the speed and grace of a tail. Many ships had crashed against The Pit, the Men aboard drowning in its depths as the Sirens shrieked in joy around. Castiel’s heart beat a sharp staccato rhythm in his throat as he watched the ship and its fascinating Steersman, the man who had managed to fool them and spill more Siren blood than he had ever seen, sail toward his annihilation.

Drawing my circus characters again made me wanna draw just Lydia by herself. 

I picture her with Natasha Lyonne's voice (she was actually my original choice for Cleo's voice in Eileen Evergreen's story but then I changed my mind and decided to have Cleo's voice be Kristen Stewart. And yes I know Lydia and Cleo look alike and yes that may or may not have resulting in me making my original choice for Cleo's voice become Lydia's voice shut up)
