Card Thoughts of the Day #2 (08/30/2023) Another metagame destroying entry already? SPYRAL Double Helix, released in the set Circuit Break (CIBR) in 2017, is a Link-2 monster belonging to the World Premiere SPYRAL theme. It allows the user to Special Summon any SPYRAL monster from their deck by successfully calling the type of card on top of your opponent's deck, a gimmick shared by many other SPYRAL monsters, while also being treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent" on the field. Before the release of Double Helix, SPYRAL was considered to be a weak theme. This was primarily because many SPYRAL cards (But mainly SPYRAL Quik-Fix) needed the user to control SPYRAL Super Agent on the field to use their effects, but because the basic Super Agent was limited to either a Normal Summon or a gamble reliant Special Summon, it was difficult to reliably get him on the field. Other monsters were able to take SPYRAL Super Agent as their name, such as "SPYRAL Tough" but they were equally difficult to get on the field. Ironically, many of the most powerful SPYRAL cards later on were released in the first wave of cards (SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red, SPYRAL Quik-Fix, SPYRAL GEAR - Drone), and were seen as having a lot of potential.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Double Helix, by being an Extra Deck monster treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent," unlocked that potential, becoming notorious for enabling SPYRAL as a strategy that could spam Link monsters easily and quickly by Special Summoning SPYRAL Quik-Fix or SPYRAL Master Plan from your deck to begin a combo, seeing mass adoption in the OCG and TCG metagame for a time. Later on in 2020, it reappeared alongside the newly released Magicians' Souls, a consistency tool allowing the user to send SPYRAL Master Plan from their Deck to the GY, with a further refined Link spam strategy, albeit not as all-encompassing to the metagame as it's 2017 counterpart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My thoughts on SPYRAL Double Helix and the SPYRAL theme are complicated. Like a lot of other World Premier themes, the art of SPYRAL is phenomenal. It provides a very clean modern-day aesthetic, clashing (but in a good way) to the more magical or fantastical themes in Yu-Gi-Oh, alongside a small story about a teacher turning on his student and their organization. It's gameplay, however, involves a lot of Soft Once Per Turn abuse and generic link monsters, which does put me off of the strategy as a whole. However, I do hope that with the newly revealed SPYRAL Double Agent, SPYRAL Master Plan makes it off the TCG Banlist so SPYRAL players in the TCG can enjoy their deck to the fullest.

More Narnia Thoughts on Uncle Andrew (the ultimate cringe fail villain man).
Okay new people who have recently followed me as I’ve (very bravely) been posting about other non-MBS fandoms. More Uncle Andrew thoughts.
As much as I’d like a Narnia spin off about his childhood, I’d also love to see him in a spin off about Digory’s life after Narnia, because Uncle Andrew goes to live with them after Digory’s mother gets better so that Aunt Letty can finally be relieved of the burden.
What on earth must that have been like for Digory?
The books say Uncle Andrew was too scared to try magic again, and became “nicer than ever before” but was still a bit of a creep and liked to talk up how hot Jadis was and how he totally had a chance (so we know he's still delusional).
But imagine what that was like for Digory (and Polly when she visited every summer).
They’re living this idyllic life with Digory’s wonderful parents in the estate they’ve inherited, and then at 3pm the man who ran unethical scientific experiments on them stumbles downstairs after sleeping in until the late afternoon to pour himself a glass of morning brandy muttering under his breath “a dem fine woman, shame about that temper” as he hobbles back upstairs. Polly visits Digory’s family for Christmas and Uncle Andrew is just… there. What would they even get him as a present besides brandy and cigars? I’d suggest a self-help book, but I think most of the advice would go over his head.
My point is: if someone ever wrote or made a tv or movie spin off about Digory and Polly after Magician’s Nephew and how Digory became the professor and what his life was like during those in between years, I would enjoy it, but it better include the comedic potential of Andrew in the background of every scene being an absolute disaster and human train wreck (even if he is no longer actively doing crime).

Thinking about soul permeability in regards to Cristabel and Mercymorn. Mainly the quasi religious reverence Mercy holds for John, despite everything, after ten thousand years of bitterness and regrets and sex parties. Mercy in Act 4 isn't just a woman who feels betrayed; she's a faithful who's lost her religion.
I've always been fascinated by the way Mercy acts around John; he's both her Emperor and sort of friends and her God, in a way that I don't think any of the other Lyctors ever come close to. They have personal loyalties to John, except when they don't, and a lovehate thing going on, but I don't think they truly worship him the way Mercy does, even when she's scolding him.
Pre TUG, I always thought that this was something Mercy did to honour Cristabel’s memory. Cristabel killed herself out of devotion and Mercy dedicated her whole existence to her remembrance; of course she needed to believe in John's divinity, to keep Cristabel’s faith alive. I thought it was a role Mercy performed, that of the fanatic, because turning her back on that side of Cristabel meant agreeing with Augustine that Cristabel hurt her by taking away her choice.
But what if it's not a mannerism Mercy developed? What if it's Cristabel’s soul peeking through?

How would the ROs react if they see MC have a bruise on their lips and only to found out it's because MC accidentally fell and hit a chair?
(friend and dating stage)
Me 🤝 MC: being the clumsiest human alive
Rook: "Wow, you look like you got punched in the face-did you?" Would probably find it really funny when you told him, before throwing ice at you to help. During the dating stage, he's a lot more gentle about it, but he still finds it funny once he realizes other then the bruising you're ok
Beck: Furrows his brow, and reaches out almost by instinct wondering what happened. You feel the buzz of his magic, although he asks if he can fix it. Dating is much the same, although his hands are closer to cradling your face, thumb brushing against your lips. Doesn't really care how it happened, just wants to make sure you're ok
Rhea: When she looks up from her desk/work, she goes still. It's not a sight she was expecting, and she rises immediately. "You need ice on that immediately." When you tell her what happened, she's almost at a loss for words. Dating stage, she just gives a soft shake of her head, "Oh my dearly beloved, how are you so clumsy?" before pressing the ice to your mouth
Zoe: Isn't sure what to say at first, or how to even ask what happened. When they finally ask what happened while grabbing ice, they just stop and stare, "...A...chair?" Dating stage they're a lot more proactive, but the fact you did it via a chair still gives them pause
Lars: "You never fail to amaze me." He says in the most sarcastic tone of voice ever. He also doesn't look surprised you got this from a run in with a chair. Doesn't see it as a big deal, probably because he's had/seen worse lol, you'll heal. Dating stage, he just gives a look, before you feel the zing of his magic and the pain vanishes. He goes back to what he was doing with a shake of his head.
???: I like to imagine during the friend stage they're still in your head and witness you fall spectacularly lol. They're probably really concerned, and insist you ice it before it swells. During the dating stage, they furrow their brow and tilt their head when they notice the bruising and swelling. When they inquire about it and you tell them, the concern remains but they're also almost impressed by how perfectly you managed to hit

The Magician: Luz with the Elemental Glyphs
Upright: Manifestation, resourcefulness, skill, power, ability, concentration, desire
Reversed: Manipulation, illusion, wasted talent, deception, trickery, unfocused, untrustworthy
The Magician represents new beginnings, opportunities, and willpower. She has taken the inner potential of the Fool and has manifested her ambitions through willpower. In a reading, this card tells you “You have everything you need at your fingertips,” and classic designs of this card depict the Magician wielding all four suits of the Tarot, so I thought it was appropriate to depict Luz wielding all four of the base glyphs! This card is all about bringing all your resources together synergistically so the end result is greater than the sum of its parts; fittingly, glyph magic is based on combining base glyphs for different effects. The Magician is also considered the bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms, which fits Luz’s connections to both the human and demon realms. Overall, Luz’s journey to find all the glyphs is what allows her to flourish in the Demon realm and to fully realize her lifelong dream of being a witch, making her a perfect fit for this card.
The reversed meanings, on the other hand, perfectly fit Luz’s narrative foil, Philip. He took many of the same qualities as Luz — resourcefulness, skill, and desire for power — and used them to manipulate and deceive an entire realm of people to do his bidding. (It would have been cool to include him on the card, but I didn’t want it to get too crowded lol)

Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight
Is it awful of me to say that I genuinely like this Dark Magician Girl Timaeus fusion more than either of the Dark Magician ones? Because I really, really do. Like, they gave her a whole ass sword and armor (that is questionable, admittedly) modeled after her normal outfit. The way they transformed her iconic hat into a knight's helmet is so fucking cool honestly. And of course, let's not forget how cool Timaeus looks here as well. Sure, he's much less of a focal point than Dark Magician Girl is, but once you notice that glare he's giving the camera, you just can't forget it. Definitely the best Timaeus has looked across all his cards; the texture work used to imply the presence of scales across his body alone is amazing. The light reflections off Dark Magician Girl's sword and helmet are wonderful as well. It looks like the air itself is being sliced up.
Rating: 10/10, If you're going to say she must be having an awful time riding this dragon, I already know and I don't want to think about it

🪄 and 🌙 for Tillda please!
Sure thing!
Q: "🪄 (Magic Wand) - Are they capable of wielding magic? Is it a learned skill, or is it innate? What sorts of spells can they cast? Do they possess any magical items or artifacts? [e.g. the Dimensional Mantle]"
A: I headcanon that Taranza's species as a whole (including Tillda) have innate abilities in both plant and web magic (and probably crystal magic too). But that doesn't mean all of them practice or use that magic on a regular basis—Tillda, for example, rarely has a major reason to make webs aside from doing her hair, and she almost never uses her plant magic. So, she's not exactly battle-tested, but she wouldn't hesitate to sling a spell or two in self-defense.
PS: If Taranza's is pink and Sectonia's is golden, I think Tillda's magic aura ought to be purple!
(continued answers + sketches under the cut!)
PPS: It was mostly Tillda that supported Taranza's study of puppeteering magic (which is NOT one of their species' innate abilities). She didn't understand the first thing about it herself, but it was one of the few things that continued to make her little brother genuinely cheerful in the wake of their parents' sudden absence, so… escorting him to puppetry classes and sorcerers' seminars was soon just part of life.
Tumblr media
Q: "🌙 (Moon) - Is your OC a particularly light or heavy sleeper? Somewhere in-between? Do they take naps?"
A: I would have to think Tillda is a heavy sleeper. Her job is pretty stressful and she always comes home tired. And she does take naps, but never intentionally…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(To be honest, she probably has chronic fatigue.)

((Hidden in the Sand HM Headcanon list here we go-
((For the ghosts that aren’t the muses of the blog I might do something for Host later tho, we’ll see
Host:
Host is one of the most talkative skeletons you’ll ever interact with. Despite not having lungs, they can carry a conversation all by themselves
They do this to Egore frequently
Like all Ghost Hosts they adore puns. Especially the macabre
As stated previously, Host is a lemure fragment. A lemure is a ghost drawn to houses or estates more often than not and have an urge to keep things as if one were living there. Lemures are often befriended by magically gifted humans or mediums to keep their spaces clean in exchange for whatever a lemure wants. Host was tied to the Mansion before Leota got there, but they don't recall if they died there or was summoned there previously
Fragments are generally snapshots of individuals. It’s not the full soul, but rather fragmented bits of what remained after a reaper took the rest. Fragments are very common, however they vary in completion. Host is on the less complete side
Due to their condition as a fragment, Host doesn’t remember a lot of things before Leota and taking over as Host of the Mansion alongside her. They remember vague flickers of their mortal life, like their occupation as a butler and their cause of death but otherwise, not much else. Mostly, Host knows very general facts or extremely specific details, but nothing in between
Today, Host does struggle with their memory still. They use journals and notepads to keep track of the denizens of the Mansion and current going ons. Please don’t be too mad if they forget your name and needs to check their notes; they're trying their best
Host’s original form or avatar when they were first solidified by Leota was a disembodied butler’s suit. When more and more spirits started coming in and started mistaking them as an empty suit rather than a being, they started taking on the form of a skeleton in the suit instead. It probably helped that they remembered the cause of their death at this time and was able to become more unique with the addition of their noose necktie
Host will tuck the frayed end of their noose into their vest like they would a tie. Especially if they find it’s getting in the way of paperwork. Sometimes, if they're particularly annoyed, they’ll swipe it over their shoulder like a scarf
Host is 60% sure the corpse hanging from the rafters of the stretching room is theirs. They're not really sure tho, particularly because of the garb. But it gives them some relief to think it is. They named it Robert
Despite Host’s seemingly unending patience, they draw a line at Egore’s past absence from the Mansion. They're still frustrated at the demon about those 50 years
Host is good friends with Sinclair. Mostly because Host was one of the first individuals who interacted with him when he was released from the Staircase. They were the first ghost to actually touch Sin as well. Sinclair trusts Host a lot, less so as a friend, but more like a big brother
Constance:
As stated several times, Constance is Egore’s ex-wife, murderer, and victim. Quite the resume
Constance was skewered on metal fence posts lining the edge of her home after she claims she was pushed off the roof by Egore. She shuts anyone down who suggests that she jumped on purpose instead
Constance is a phantasm, surprisingly. This means she often can’t interact with the physical world in any meaningful way. The Mansion is a different story for these ghosts, due to a spell Leota put down, but she can’t touch anything physical (without difficulty) outside of the Mansion’s grounds
Egore finds this hilarious. Constance is infuriated
As a phantasm, she can manipulate her ghostly avatar. She often depicts herself as she was when alive, however, if her energy wanes too much she will appear almost mummified with wounds corresponding with her death
Constance is generally rude to a majority of visitors to the attic and often argues with Egore. They get into screaming matches sometimes to see who can beat each other down the fastest. Host has to step in when that happens
The only reason Constance is still in the Mansion is because she has nowhere else to go. Her manor/haunting ground was mowed down for an apartment complex and she’s wandered until finding the Mansion. Leota hasn’t kicked her out because she technically hasn’t harmed anyone
Constance knows if she attacks Egore, she will likely be banished, or worst, trapped and bound within the catacombs under the Mansion
The same applies to Egore
She is terrified by Egore still because of what he did to her after she killed him and when she was still alive. She knows that Egore is capable of far worse than arguing and growling at her
Despite her fear, she is still a very proud woman. She refuses to indicate her terror and often brags to other ghosts about her wealth, accomplishments, or independence
Constance is capable of moving out of the attic if she wants to, but is too proud to do so. It's a constant dominance contest between E and her. Egore is winning most of the time
