Summary: Sometimes he felt darkness rise in his mind that whispered with the voices of others that he was eternally doomed to cause naught but pain; sometimes logic only reminded him that he did feel that impulse to destroy; sometimes he wondered if the world would be a better place without him in it.

People tend to hate what they do not understand, and while Magnus can ignore most cruel words, he sometimes fears there might be a fragment of truth in them.

Fortunately, he has Alec.

Over the several centuries he’d been alive, Magnus had learnt well how to love himself, if only because nobody else did.

Well, that wasn’t quite accurate — there were plenty of people, Cat and Ragnor prominent among them, who cared for him — but it was certainly true that there were more people willing to hate Magnus, for anything and everything they could think of. His skin colour, his sexuality, the way he dressed, the makeup he wore, the words he spoke, his demonic heritage — there never seemed to be any shortage of reasons to hate him, and it took his hardest, sharpest walls to keep all the cruel words out.

Or at least most of them. Some slipped through: not the majority of the senseless bigotry, but the whispers to which Magnus was himself most susceptible — the ones that told him he wasn’t, couldn’t be, good.

Coloured people don’t have morals. Bisexuals cheat on their partners. Men who dress like that are predators. Those were usually possible to block out, based on obvious ignorance as they were; it was harder to not listen, though, when it was warlocks are inherently evil because of their demon blood.

For most warlocks, of course, any such claim was easy to dismiss, but Magnus wasn’t most warlocks. His father was a Prince of Hell, and — worse — Magnus had once done his bidding. He’d been young and misguided and desperate for kindness; he’d latched on to the man with eyes like him, who told him the mark that’d killed his mother was a mark of power — but sometimes he couldn’t remind himself of that. Sometimes, all he could remember were the screams he’d caused at his father’s bidding, piling on top of his step-father’s screams as Magnus burned him alive.

Magnus’ magic brought death and destruction. It was powerful, and he did his best to do good with it, but it was never as good at healing as Catarina’s; he trained it to build portals and wards and potions, and he was good at that, but there was always that faint whisper of destroy break crush tear it all down that lingered in it, threatening to turn blue into red. Help into hurt.

And it was made all the worse because he had hurt before — he’d killed his stepfather, first of all, his panicked instinct to kill; he’d killed under Asmodeus’ thumb, gloried in the praise Asmodeus gave him; he’d even killed since then, usually but not always in the heat of battle, usually but not always feeling bad about it afterwards, often enjoying it in the moment. They were all bad people, those he’d killed, but everyone had the possibility for redemption — he had to believe that, if he was to forgive himself — and he had snuffed out that possibility for them.

Usually, he knew that none of that meant he himself was evil; usually, logic won out over insecurities. But sometimes he felt darkness rise in his mind that whispered with the voices of others that he was eternally doomed to cause naught but pain; sometimes logic only reminded him that he did feel that impulse to destroy; sometimes he wondered if the world would be a better place without him in it.

It rarely got that far, and when it did, he was always pulled back from the brink but friends or family or, once, Camille. But it was less rare for him to wonder whether the Shadowhunters’ whispers were right, at least in his case — whether he was inherently evil, doomed to turn on the world and use his father’s power to burn it to the ground.

(Because he could do that, if he wanted to, and that was terrifying. Tessa was the only other child of a Prince of Hell that he knew, and her power was insufficient to match his — she hadn’t yet grown into her full strength and anyway, Belial had always been weaker than Asmodeus. If Magnus gave in to the temptation to destroy, he could bring the whole world down with him, and there was nobody who could stop him.)

It wasn’t a problem, most of the time — he refused to let Edom’s siren song pull him in, channelled his magic into creating and not destroying, reminded himself that had it been anyone else, he would’ve been far more forgiving than he was of himself. It cropped up only occasionally, a bad day or two that he passed in bed or with his friends, fading away with time.

With Alec, it was even less of a problem. There was something about the way Alec looked at him, whether he was wielding magic or washing dishes, eyes glamoured or warlock mark on display, that helped close up that gaping fear inside. Alec blocked out the cruel whispers Magnus didn’t want to believe (but did anyway) with warm words and glowing smiles; he made Magnus feel like he was good, when he was with Alec.

That, perhaps, was why he didn’t have one of his bad days until a year after their marriage. It was longer than his usual between bad days, long enough that he wondered if maybe it was gone, but (of course) it wasn’t, only faded slightly into the background. He’d hoped that having Alec had — magically, impossibly — cured him of that insidious insecurity; when he woke up one morning to the old whispers, the old darkness, it felt like he’d fallen back to how he was before.

He tried to hide it from Alec, but his husband was nothing if not perceptive, and Alec had barely been awake for five minutes before he asked — gently — what was wrong.

“Nothing,” Magnus said reflexively, and immediately regretted it — both he and Alec were trying to train themselves out of that automatic denial of any problems, and he was supposed to be getting better at it.

Alec sighed, but still gently. “You don’t need to talk about it if you don’t want to, but please don’t pretend nothing’s wrong.”

“A lot of things are wrong,” Magnus shot back, and then relented. “I’m just — upset. For no particular reason.”

He didn’t feel like he deserved the softness in Alec’s eyes, or his offer: “Can I help?”

Magnus went to shake his head, then paused, aborted a nod, opened his mouth, and shut it again. Alec interpreted it — correctly — as a silent stay that Magnus couldn’t bring himself to say aloud, and promptly took the day off. Magnus protested, but Alec knew him well enough to see his quiet relief underneath it all.

They spent the morning in bed, eating pastries that Alec had summoned with the help of the Alliance rune on his wrist (Magnus hadn’t been able to bring himself to use magic, and as soon as he realised it, Alec had promptly snapped his fingers to do the spell Magnus had taught him not so long ago). Alec didn’t push Magnus to talk and Magnus didn’t offer; that would come later, when Magnus had reminded himself that Alec wasn’t going anywhere. Even if he was a little bit evil inside.

Lunch was sandwiches Alec made using the contents of their kitchen, which were far more numerous than they’d been before Alec had come into his life, and then the two of them curled up on the couch with Magnus half lying across Alec, half sitting in his lap. It was possibly Magnus’ favourite position; Alec’s arm was wrapped around him, his warmth enveloping him. Even if he didn’t deserve to have Alec here, Alec was here, and that was everything.

“Want to talk about it?” Alec asked into the quiet between them.

“I don’t — nothing happened,” Magnus said, words seeming to tangle together in their unwillingness to be let out. He’d never talked about this before, not with Ragnor or Cat or Raphael who already knew what it was, not with any of the people he’d loved who he’d never told about this for fear they’d leave. He turned his head, shifting so that he could see Alec’s face but not yet meeting his eyes. “I just — I don’t know how to… to be good.”

Alec blinked at him for a moment in blatant confusion. “Magnus, you are good. Of course you are.”

“No, I’m — it’s not—” Magnus broke off, shaking his head. “You have such faith in me, Alexander, but I have done… bad things. Things that I regret.”

“And it’s precisely because you regret them that you’re good,” Alec returned. “Magnus, you have the best, brightest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. You love wholly and unconditionally. You give second chances when they’re really not deserved. You drop everything to come help us whenever we need you, without regard for yourself.”

“Edom’s magic pulls at me to destroy,” Magnus said, dully, Alec’s words battering against his defences. “Eventually, I’ll slip up — I’ll get angry or distracted and it might — I might — I could hurt somebody, hurt you, so easily—”

“Your magic,” Alec said with sudden intensity, “has never hurt me and never will.”

Magnus was struck silent by the depth of certainty in his voice. Previous partners had all fallen somewhere between fearing his magic and reluctantly tolerating it; Alec adored it, and it adored him in return. He didn’t quite know what to say to that, so he opted for levity instead. “That’s not something I’ve heard many Shadowhunters say.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t have quite the intended effect — a realisation dawned across Alec’s face and he looked at Magnus with a sharper gaze than before. “You’re worried about this because of what you’ve been told in the past, aren’t you?”

It was almost more a statement than a question, so Magnus didn’t say anything — what was he supposed to say to that? No would be a lie, and yes felt like an admission of weakness — but Alec read his acknowledgement on his face anyway.

“There is nothing wrong with you,” he said quietly. “There’s just a lot wrong with the world you live in.”

“Perhaps,” Magnus replied, spurred to sudden admittance by the tenderness in Alec’s eyes that chased away the fear, “but it will take a while for me to believe it.”

Alec hummed and pulled him closer, settling Magnus between his arms as they reclined on the couch. “That’s alright. I’ll keep telling you so until you get there.”

Softly, Magnus smiled.

Murf's Top 50 Mods - Part 3 (2020 - 2023 Edition)

I made a Top 50 list (Pt 1 and Pt2) back in 2016, talking about mods that I've used & love. But with all the goated content that the amazing TS3 community continues to churn out, I NEEDED to update my list! This one in no way diminishes or negates the other mods I've already listed--like, I shouldn't have to sit here and explain how NRAAS continues to carry TS3 on its freaking shoulders, ok. This is just MORE mods, the Top 50 most RECENT ones I've tried out since, like, quarantine.

I am a VERY niche simmer--I love fantasy gameplay, so my fave mods are the ones that not only offer general quality of life improvements, but also add new abilities and interactive objects inspired by different cultures, time periods, or genres. So y'all already KNOW which ones have earned my top spots. They're not based on which mods are "better," just which ones I personally have been using the most.

1: Smooth Patch, LazyDuchess

I've already gushed about this mod, but oh well. Like--I use an EFFTON of CC. My Live Mode gameplay itself doesn't tend to lag so much as my game's slow to LOAD, slow to save, CAS is a nightmare, I can do my taxes waiting for the Misc Decor section to open, etc etc. But the Smooth Patch loads everything so much quicker for me! 😭

One thing is that on the EA App version (curse you, EA) the Master Controller package didn't work on my end, so I took it out, but everything else has been great!

2: Search Mod, LazyDuchess

Speaking of the Misc Decor section -- HOW LONG did we ask EA for a Search function y'all? Only to be ignored. Then the second TS4 is released, it ain't got a effing thing in it, but it's got a Search function??? 🤔 ISTG it's like the simgurus were told to take all of the TS3 community's best suggestions, and poach them for TS4 (like vampire coffins--NO I'm not over it!). WHY do modders have to do your frikkin job for you, EA?! I call EA lazy all the time cuz EA you suck, so it's the most ironic thing ever that LazyDuchess is out here KILLING IT.

My ONLY "complaint" about the Search mod is the position of the icon. I use A LOT of Collection Files, and I noticed that the Search icon actually covers the Delete button when in the Collection viewer. So I can't delete items in collections with the Search icon in the way.

But this is a MINOR nitpick--I almost never delete items, it's just something I noticed is all.

3 - 8: OCCULT MODS: EVERYTHING by @puddingface1902

Y'all already know the Enhanced Witches mod is my favorite mod ever made. But PF1902 also made cool enhancements to the Fairies, Genies, Vampires, Werewolves, and Mermaids too! My sims are usually Nraas hybrids (e.g.: Sakura is a faery, witch & plantsim; Magnus Bane is a witch & genie; etc.), so it's FANTASTIC having so many new abilities for my magical occults. 😍

9 - 11: OCCULT MODS by xantak22

Even more occult mods at MTS are for enhanced Plantsims, Ghosts, and Mummies! I was dying for more Plantsim abilities, omg, they're my 3rd fave occult after Witches & Fae.

12: Sim Control Tools by Knight

Sooooo many quality of life mods have come out! ^0^

I've been ABUSING the Teleport To Me function, to quickly get sims off of lots & where I need them to be. It also lets sims unlock more Social/Romantic interactions. (Now all we need is a way to interact with sims from EA's useless thumbnails.)

13 - 18: @anitmb's mods

There are SOOOO many--most I've yet to even try. But so far newer ones I've been using are the Deck of Cards (FINALLY something other than EA's bulky AF poker table!), Farm Mod (look at all these CHICKENS!), and Hunting mod so my 8000 archer sims can actually hunt! (Ofc I've also used the Woodcutter and Anvil mods in my older gameplay posts, too.) And @mspoodle1's edit of the Cup of Tea mod is so pretty.

19: @mspoodle1's Poker table

Another excellent cards mod is this medieval style poker table I use a lot now, too.

20: @omedapixel's Wildflowers DR

I like EA's default wildflowers from SSNS, but Omeda's are just sooooo much nicer. (I haven't gotten around to trying out their Harvestable Plant DR yet.)

21: Swordfighting mod by CyrusBanefort

En garde! This mod is so freaking epic!

One thing I've noticed is that the game lags while it waits for the mod to boot up (a message has to first pop up saying it's running when you first launch your saves). But other than that this mod is excellent.

22 - 24: Yoga rugs

I've long been using the yoga rugs by Kitabalibar and the edited one from @mspoodle1. But now there's the newest one by @twinsimming, with brand new animations & features. The more the merrier I say, LOL. What's especially neat is the kids wobbling around as they try to do yoga! :3

25 - 30: TheSweetSimmer's mods--so cute! :3

Omg so frikkin many, I can't even catch up! The interactions are so freaking precious, like from the More Toddler Interactions (cuddle, look at, etc) & Biggest Little Mod (hug legs), I've never had so much fun playing with kids! <3 And I LOVE that they can Catch Butterflies and Pick Flowers--you'd think plantsim children would be able to do this by default, EA! Honestly, just grab everything by TSS, your kid sims will thank you!

31 - 33: @spheresims Medieval/Nature/Tribal mods

Y'all know I'm crazy about the Functional Fireplaces mod (the cauldrons, baby! 😈), but the One with Nature and Wildlife Hunting mods are great too, perfectly complimenting the off-the-grid realness.

34: @olomayasims/Cmomoney Smoking Mod Overhaul

The original smoking mod was on my first Top 50 list, so it's awesome seeing it get new upgrades, interactions & animations.

I've never smoked IRL, but sooooo many of my sims just puff-puff away; I'm such an enabler. U_U Now all we need is cigars and pipes!

35 - 38: Callia-Evergreen/Camkitty's CAS CC for animal hybrids at MTS

Not a "mod" per se, but whatever--my list my rules! I love ALL of their CC, but I get SO MUCH use out of animal-themed CC like the digitigrade sliders, wolf feet, lizard tails, and fae wings. Do check them out if you like to play with horror and monster-sims!

39: @greenplumbboblover's Sheep

EASILY one of the most incredible mods I've ever seen. Like....HOW? (Once @omedapixel's Goats are done I'm gonna start screaming someone do llamas pleeeeeaaaaase!!!)

40: Arsil's musical instruments mod

I used the sax most recently in my IWTV gameplay, and it was excellent, perfect for the NOLA vibes! However, although I use the flute A LOT more (for my Untamed gameplay--it's been such a GODSEND!), I really wish the hands were positioned better, preferably using the poses from Chisims' flute poseset. (But I don't eff with poses/animations, otherwise I'd do it myself. U_U) Ah well, it's still one of my fave mods though.

41 - 42: Flower Arranging mod by zoe22 + @mspoodle1's Florist Collection

Guys, I've been wanting this mod since FOREVER! ^0^ (I swear, the best thing about TS4 is all the 4t3 conversions, LMAO!) I just wish Teens could Dabble and use it, too--all they can do is stock the table.

43: Just Sit/Nap Anywhere by FloTheory

Sometimes you just want sims to fall asleep anywhere, DANG, EA!

44: @sweetdevil-sims' Toddler Food DR

Cuz EA's food is UUUUUUUUGLY~! I kept forgetting to install it, only to be rudely reminded every time I had to look at my toddler sims eating MUD.

45 - 46: @mspoodle1's mail pen quill DR and @omedapixel's pencil quill DR

I looooove quill pens IRL (ballpoint pens, not the fountain pens--I'm way too messy), so having mods that let my sims use them too is 👌

47: Fireflies Enhanced! by Canibal_MLO

I love anything that enhances the wildlife and collectibles/harvestables to be more dynamic and interactive. And I was JUST about to do a firefly catching scene for my IWTV insp. gameplay, so this came right on time! The falling leaves effect is delightful, but I kinda wish it was falling flower petals instead, cuz ofc I do. 🌸

48: Unicorn Aurora DR by Canibal_MLO

GORGEOUS. This mod replaces the unicorn mist with northern lights, like.... I love the genius ideas simmers have.

49: Custom Plumbbob Color tool by CrossTheMersey

What a neat idea! Although the default Maxis colors are ingrained in my psyche, with the iconic green plumbbob, as soon as I saw this mod I knew I wanted to at least try something different and play around with it.

50: @aa6x7's Teru Teru Bozu + other edits [Honorable Mention]

I rave about Cmomoney's Time/Weather Mod all the time, I use it constantly. AA6x7's Teru Teru Bozu (Japanese "Sunshine Monk" charms) is kinda like a simpler version of it, as it just resets bad weather back to Sunny. But it's such a cute idea and perfect for my gameplay. Plus, AA6x7 makes all kinds of neat edits/mods to EA's bulky AF meshes, so if you haven't checked them out already, DO!

And that's all the mods I've managed to try out recently!

I don't have anywhere near the kind of free time that I used to, so my simming has been put on the backburner and I've missed all kinds of cool and exciting releases. But trust: I am taking note, so that I know what to try once I have time.

All my deepest & sincerest gratitude & love to the entire sims community, for keeping The Sims 3 going--this year was the 14th anniversary! Here's to 14 more! 🥳 Happy Simming!

AWG but Alec has a warlock mark

Tagging @ariella9melody and @buglersholiday because you both asked for this prompt that ended up in Cat's POV because the majority of Alec's POV would have been a mixture of "don't speak to Magnus Bane", "don't speak of Magnus Bane" and "don't tell Catarina about Magnus Bane"

Catarina stares at the young teenager, barely more than a child, in front of her. She takes in the nervous way he’s clenching and unclenching his fingers, his eyes darting every so often to a smiling Magnus, who is discussing some last-minute details with Elder Musa.

The boy is clearly uncomfortable with Magnus being there and Catarina is still trying to figure out if that’s due to his parents or something else. She doesn't think it's the usual shadowhunter bigotry, though, which is a relief because she wouldn’t want him to fight to overcome self-hatred on top of everything he already has on his plate.

“So, Alec,” she says, “- are you fine with me calling you that? Or do you prefer something else?”

“Alec is fine,” he nods, eyes darting over to a slowly approaching Ragnor. “But - uh, I thought you were sending me back to the institute, so,” another look sent Magnus’ way and a sigh of relief when he leaves, “Why am I here?”

“I’ll make a portal for you,” Catarina reassures, trying not to scare the young teenager away or make him think they’re keeping him captive, “But you’re here so we can schedule a training regimen for you that wouldn’t interrupt your shadowhunter duties.”

Catarina tries to keep her voice even as she says this, trying to ignore the same impulse that had pushed several of the Elders to mention the word ‘kidnapping’ in more than a joking manner. Because it wasn’t enough for Alec to be in an immense amount of danger just by existing. No, the Lightwoods also had the fantastic idea of letting a thirteen-year-old patrol.

Alec furrows his eyebrows together, “Why?”

“To teach you how to control your magic,” Catarina says, confused by Alec’s sudden confusion. He had been the one to seek her out, after all, panic and fear were visible in every line of his body when he asked her for help because his glamour runes refused to work any longer.

Catarina had been confused at first, wariness and compassion in equal measure had put her on high alert, her magic scouring her surroundings for any other angelic signatures, which led to her only catching half of Alec’s explanation.

That confusion had faded the moment Alec had raised his shirt and twisted around to reveal white, opalescent scales that gathered into small diamond-like shapes along his spine. A warlock mark.

Catarina had been quick to contact Magnus and the other Elders despite the panicked request she keeps this between them. Something like a shadowhunter-born warlock, one that could bear runes unlike Tessa, was not something she would have been able to keep to herself. Not when that very fact put Alec into a world of danger.

Still, it had taken her nearly an hour to get Alec’s okay. The promise of blood oaths that would prevent her and the Elders from sharing the information with anyone else enough to finally convince him.

That's how they ended up in their current situation, though, Catarina is starting to realize there was some miscommunication somewhere down the line if Alec is asking her why she would help him train his magic.

“But you glamoured the…my back,” Alec says, eyebrows still furrowed in confusion. “That’s all I needed.”

Catarina gentles her voice, “Untrained magic is dangerous magic,” she says, repeating the sentence her own teacher had installed into her at a young age.

Alec somehow looks even more confused.“But I don’t have magic,” he corrects, breaking his parade’s rest to scratch at a spot over his chest. “I’m pretty sure I would have noticed if I had.”

“Maybe it’s weaker because of your angelic blood,” Catarina muses, walking over to her couch and inviting him over. “But I can assure you, you do.”

Alec presses his lips together, “I don’t want to be a bother,” he says, sounding old and painfully young all at once. “You mentioned you’re a nurse and I don’t want to take up your free time to accommodate my schedule.”

There’s something infuriatingly adult in the way he speaks, a maturity that comes from being forced to grow up past your age. Then again, she thinks sardonically, being used like the Nephilim equivalent of canon fodder will do that to you.

Seriously, a thirteen-year-old patrolling. Most warlocks wouldn’t let their children or apprentices brew a harmless beginner's potion by themselves at that age.

“I’m sure we can figure out something that would work out for the both of us,” she says, conjuring a pen and a notepad that she holds out to him. “Now, what about you write down your schedule and I write mine down.”

Alec does as ordered and starts writing down his weekly schedule to her growing horror. Starting at half past five in the morning, Alec's days seem to stretch well until midnight on the nights that he isn't patrolling and that will just not stand.

"As a nurse, I'm obliged to tell you that the recommended amount of sleep for a child your age is eight to ten hours a day."

"I'm a shadowhunter, not a child," Alec says with an assertiveness that doesn't come from defensiveness, but from being told the same words over and over again. "And I think I'm finished."

Alec hands her the schedule and Catarina tries to read the different categories Alec has written down: training, trainees, paperwork, Max and Leo, archery practice, patrol, sparring with Jace, sword practice, studying, rune practice, and story time.

"Training and trainees?" she asks, wondering what the difference is between both categories.

"Training is for Jace, my parabatai, Izzy, my sister, and I. The trainees are what we call my little brother and his best friend, they just turned three and are learning their basic forms. I'm helping them."

Catarina nods to show she understands. She supposes she can't fault Alec for wanting to be a good brother and help his little brother with his training, even if the thought of a three-year-old needing to learn how to fight is horrifying to even think of.

"And Max and Leo?"

"The New York Institute isn't a kid institute, so Max and Leo don't really have anyone to play with or keep them busy."

Catarina nods again to avoid asking about the amount of 'Max' as well as 'Max and Leo' time as well as 'Trainee' time that has been penciled in. Instead, she summons a cup of hot chocolate for Alec to have something to distract herself and him with. Then, after he's taken a few sips, eyes brightening in delight - and oh, she wouldn't have taken him for a sweet tooth - she asks about the strangest entry.

"What about paperwork? Is that similar to the studying and rune practice?"

Alec shakes his head, slowly lowering his cup on the coffee table, "No, it's just - when mom and dad are away to other institutes or in Idriss, I have to do the paperwork," he says with a careless shrug.

Catarina looks down at the schedule, looks back at the young teenager on her couch, and back at the schedule. Then, she bites down the question that is burning on her tongue.

After all, the answer is staring at her in the shape of a frankly ridiculous schedule that Alec wrote down without a second thought.

This means the story time entry, the entry that takes place twice a day at the same time every single day, right around what would be the usual bedtime for a three-year-old, is exactly what the word entails.

Catarina didn't think her personal opinion on Maryse and Robert Lightwood could sink any lower.

"Your studies are they with a teacher?" She asks, looking at the few spots those take. She wouldn't be able to ask him to do the paperwork he shouldn't be doing over at her apartment, but maybe she can convince him to take his studying sessions here.

"Not anymore," Alec says, "I just get the study material and the homework I need to finish. Why?"

Alec is still looking at her with a confused expression as if unsure of what to expect from her. "If that's easiest for you," he says, hand coming to scratch that spot on his chest again, "But I can adapt. I just have to be there for Max when he wakes up and when he goes to sleep, but the rest I can switch around."

Catarina had an inkling he would say something like this.

"Don't worry, this would work out the best for both of us," she reassures, hiding the anger behind a kind smile and another cup of hot chocolate. Then, she gives Alec his promised portal with a promise to see him on Thursday and dials a number she knows as well as her own.

Magnus picks up on the first ring. "Chocolate or alcohol?"

"Both. As well as a plan on how to murder the Lightwoods if you'd please."

"That bad?"

Catarina thinks of patrolling at thirteen years old, thinks of the hellish schedule and the fact that Alec is apparently single-handedly raising his little brother, is semi-raising his two other siblings as well, and all that on top of not quite running the institute in his parents' absence. .

Top 10 most likable TSC Characters

This is based on my opinions and what I have observed in fandom, let me know if you disagree with any of these. I’m starting at 10 and working toward the most likable TSC character.

10.) Isabelle Lightwood: She has little to no character flaws and is accepting of everyone. She is brave and caring and represents strong female empowerment. Everyone likes Izzy and I have never seen a hate post for her.

9.) Alastair Carstairs: I can not wait to see his character development in the final TLH book and see his arc completed. He is so interesting and has a great ship. He is one of the most popular characters from TLH. He has a fantastic redemption arc and is taking back some power in his life and I can’t wait to see what happens. Will wield Cortana. 10/10 character.

8.) Tavvy Blackthorn: If you do not like Tavvy something is wrong with you. He is the baby of TSC and everyone loves him.

7.) Max and Rafael: I put them tied because I don’t have a favorite of Malec’s children/ The fandom is very happy about their existence. If anything happens to them the fandom will be out for blood lol.

6.) Mina Carstairs: Kit’s baby sister, adored by the fandom, heavily protected by the characters. No one hates her.

5.) Kit Herondale: It’s Kit, he is angsty and the fandom is living for his whole arc of “I told a boy I loved him at age 12 and had to leave the country out of embarrassment when he didn’t say it back.” He is also a faerie which is super cool. I can not wait to see him as a fully developed character in TWP.

4.) Jem Carstairs: He almost didn’t make this list after the last SOBH post but I still put him here because he is Jem. Best advice and able to tame a wild Herondale.

3.) Tessa Grey: It’s Tessa, best love interests and source of the best TSC quotes. Book nerd and there for relatable for most of the fandom. Tessa is wonderful and one of my favorite book characters of all time.

2.) Alec Lightwood; Everyone loves Alec, he has has faults but he is so pivotal in the morals the series is trying to convey about acceptance that he has to be on this list. Malec is the OTP and no one can deny they are the most popular relationship in to fandom.

1.) Magnus Bane: He is Magnus, everyone loves him, brings some comedic relief to the series as well as representing the issues in the TSC world. He is one of the most loved characters ever. He also threw a birthday party for his cat which is the only reason he is above Alec.

The only thing that can be heard in the institute is the sound of my black boots against the hardwood floor. I remind myself to put a soundless rune on my boots before I leave.

My thoughts are interrupted when I see a certain blonde leaning against the wall- is he filing his fingernails with his stele again?

“Jace?” His head shoots up at the sound of my voice and he grins.

“That would be me.” He begins to walk toward me, “Are you ready to go?”

“What do you mean?” I question confused

“Demon hunting of course, what else? You know they can never get quite enough of my good looks. Such a shame they get themselves killed for it though.” He answers with a fake sigh of disappointment

“I didn’t think you were going.” I answer walking to his side

“Why, because my parabatai is currently traveling the world with his warlock boyfriend? You know a shadowhunters work is never done, even then. You know, we should go on vacation somewhere, just the two of us.”

I ignore the increased beating of my heart and look up at my boyfriend, “I mean, that I didn’t think you’d be going with me. I thought you were gonna take it solo until Alec got back.”

“And let my beautiful girlfriend go by herself. I gotta make sure you’re safe, just like any good boyfriend.” He grins at me

I scoff, “I think I can handle myself quite alright.”

“I know, but it is quite hot watching you fight, and I thought ‘why deprive myself of such a wonderful sight’.” He responds with the same stupid grin

“You won’t be able to watch me because you’ll be too busy fighting yourself.” I say while subconsciously making sure I have everything I need on my person

“I can do both, you know I'm a fantastic multi-tasker.” He smirks and I choose not to answer him

“So, do you have everything?” He asks once more

“I need to put a soundless rune on my boots.” I recall

He clicks his tongue and nods, “We don’t need the sound of your boots alerting the demons of our unholy intentions.” He kneels down in front of me and draws the rune on my right boot first with his stele, then a twin of it on my left.

He stands back up and faces me, “Is that all then?” He whispers his face close to mine

I manage to keep my composure but my voice breaks when I answer, “That’s all.” I curse myself inwardly

He smirks and kisses me, hard. I’m barely able to kiss him back before he’s pulling away and grabbing my hand, pulling me towards the door.

Jace's left hand held a sensor while his right held my hand. We were walking through ChinaTown, which was considerably busy considering the time of day it was. But it was always busy in New York City. The people walked past us without a single glance since we had glamoured ourselves sometime prior.

“Anything?” I ask glancing at the sensor in Jaces hand

Jace nods and looks up. I see a restaurant we often order from, mostly on the nights Izzy decides to...cook.

“Well at least this demon has good taste.” He murmurs before pulling me into the restaurant.

I look around before I hear Jace whisper my name, when he sees that I'm looking at him he nods his head in the direction of one of the tables.

I see it immediately, sitting alone at one of the tables with a plate of egg rolls. To the mundane it looked perfectly normal but Jace and I were able to see right through its disguise.

Jace scrunched his nose, “Who eats only egg rolls? This ones weird.”

I rolled my eyes but smiled, “They’re all weird.”

Jace shrugs and silently nods to the sign that indicates the direction of the restrooms. I nod back and we detach from each other.

As I'm walking around the corner I'm able to hear Jaces voice, “Have you ever tried their mu shu pork? It’s to die for.”

I roll my eyes and giggle under my breath.

A man passes me without a look in my direction as I lean against the wall, waiting patiently. I don’t have to wait long before the demon that was sitting at the table is thrown at the wall past me. He gets up quickly snarling his ugly long teeth.

“Not friendly I see.” I comment grabbing one of my seraph blades from one of the pockets in my jacket

“She’s taken, buddy.” I hear Jace say, but I don’t turn to see him, keeping my eyes on the demon who’s still snarling at me.

I murmur the name of my blade just in time for the demon to lunge at me. My blade grazes its side causing bits of black blood from its side. It hisses slightly in pain.

“You never did answer my question!” Jace yells as the demon now lunges at him

I come up behind them intending to stab the demon in the back but it lunges out of the way before I get the chance.

Jace, now at my side, looks at the demon expectantly.

“Screw you shadowhunters and your pork!” The demon hisses in a non-human voice

Jace gasps before lunging at the demon with his seraph blade, “And here I thought we were gonna have a nice conversation.” Jace says through clenched teeth

The demon narrowly dodges Jaces blade as I make my way toward the demon once more. My seraph blade punctures the demon's arm and it yells in pain as I push it toward Jace.

Jace cuts off one of its legs making a puddle of black blood underneath. Jace's arms go under the demons and he holds it as still as he can while the demon struggles against him. Jace nods at me with a smirk.

I lunged at the demon one last time and cut off its head.

The hallway is now drenched in black blood, and that reflects on our gear.

“Hot.” Jace says to me as he stands up from behind the demon

I shake my head but my smile gives me away.

Jace looks down at the demon's remains and makes a disgusted sound, “How can he not like mu shu pork?” Jace asks

I laugh and walk towards him. The demon's body and blood disappear unsurprisingly.

“That’s what you got from that?” I laugh

“You meet a lot of ugly demons if that's what you’re talking about. But I’ve never heard of one not liking mu shu pork.” Jace answers, his arm going around my waist.

“That’s because you never ask.” I answer

Jace makes a sound of agreement, “I suppose I should start then.” He looks down at me and smiles, “Breakfast?”

I look down at my clothes, soaked in black demon blood and sweat, “Shower.” I answer

Jace grins, “I like your idea much better.”

In the light of Midnights, especially Anti-hero, I'm going back to one of my favorite quotes of all time.

Everything I am, is all mine.

In case you're not in the TSC fandom, Magnus Lightwood-Bane says this exact line of dialogue to his demon father Asmodeus who laid claim over half his soul, half of his abilities and even half his emotions. Now Asmodeus is a Prince of Hell, and as usual to most fantasy series, there are a lot of fantastical elements involved here.

What is not fantastical however, is what Asmodeus represents in Magnus's life, and what this line truly means.

Magnus has had a traumatic life. I will not elaborate on it, but apart from childhood trauma, there have been abandonment issues in him, and his emotional attachment more often than not turn out disastrously. However, Magnus has always been a good person at his very soul.

Even then, Asmodeus represents a part of his life he considers tainted and corrupted, dark and evil. I do NOT mean Magnus himself, mind you, I mean the part of his past involving his father.

Magnus, if you don't know him, hides insecurities behind grandiosity. He's bold, loud, unapologetically himself. But he hides deep fears, unhealed wounds. Magnus took steps towards healing further, but at this point of the story, he's still not entirely there.

Now coming to Anti-hero, we see pretty clearly how Taylor portrays and writes about her fears. The Anti-hero, so to speak, is loud, brash, prettily made up. She throws Taylor off of the bed as they're bouncing, she smashes the guitar while Taylor is playing. She convinces Taylor that everyone will betray her eventually, and distorts her self image.

It's me, hi. I'm the problem it's me.

The line is repeated throughout the song. But the first time it's said, the counterpart says it at her doorstep, cheery and almost like inviting herself into her life. As if proud of her achievement of making Taylor miserable. As the song goes on, slowly but surely the same line gets sadder and sadder in tone until she concurs that everyone agrees with her self conscious images. Saying 'it's me' now is just painful.

But. But.

It's her. It's a manipulative part of her making her self conscious and anxious. But it's still a part of her. Just like Magnus's good deeds and bad choices are all a part of him. Now it can go one of two ways.

You can try to root out this part of you. You might succeed, you might not. But either way it's going to hurt and it's going to make you miserable while you do it. Cutting out a part of yourself sounds easy, but it's excruciating emotional pain.

On the other hand, you could embrace it and accept it so you can guide it to a change. That's what Magnus does. He embraces his darkness and his light. Magnus is not perfect as a soul, and he knows that. He's flawed, and he embraces his flaws as part of him. 'Yes I'm broken, but all the pieces belong to me.' 'Yes I'm hurting, but it's me who's going to make it better.' It's this reclamation of souls that's so important. It's accepting and embracing your darkest corners, because it's only you who can see them. So if you cut them off, if you chose to hide away, how can they ever see light?

if you haven’t, i recommend reading the novella books:

- the bane chronicles is fun especially if you like magnus.

- tftsa was so cute i loved her (read nothing but shadows before you read tlh)!!

- ghosts of the shadow market is definitely super important for world building for tlh and twp, so i strongly recommend reading it before them (it could be a little boring at times, i admit. but jessa is adorable). read cast long shadows and every exquisite thing before you read tlh. the rest is a lot of world building for kit’s background and jessa.

- OH OH also read the tec series if you haven’t (it follows malec) and i think it’ll eventually connect to twp.

- i believe cassie has these short stories about the tlh cast set before chain of gold. i remember reading them every month on her newsletter before the book came out. i think you can find them on her website? they’re not super important but they do get referenced once in a while in tlh

you probably know all of this and i probably mansplained (can you do that if you’re a girl?) everything 😭 but it’s better to be safe than sorry!! i hope you had fun reading everything and def let me know if you have any questions!

I'm gonna do my best to answer this in a comprehensive manner (let's see how long that lasts lol). You're my fave! (feel free to pop into my messages if you ever wanna chat or anything)

Okay I'm gonna start by saying that I had a strange relationship w TDA. I mentioned some of this in my initial post but I'm just gonna go through everything for continuity sake, if you will. Last summer I intended to finish the 3 series before my semester started. I got through all of TMI and TID but finished only LM and 150-ish pages of LoS. I waited till this summer to pick back up. I remember feeling bitter when I started LM because it was strange to have a modern-set book that didn't focus on my fave TMI gang (I watched the CoB movie religiously when I was younger and, before I knew better, watched the show weekly). It took me a while for Emma to grow on me and I initially had a hard time keeping track of all of the Blackthorns because there were so many of them. What kept me going were all of the connections to Mr. Poe (yes, I just called him that. deal with it.) I've started rambling so let me summarize this portion by saying that TDA didn't snatch me up until mid-LoS. okay, onward.

QoAaD was so reminiscent of CoHF and I loved it very much. WARNING SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO MAY READ THIS FOR SOME UNGODLY REASON. I appreciate the importance of the Thule portion and know the book would be shit without it, but, despite it still being fantastical, the apocalyptic vibe was not my fave. It was nice to get Livvy back for a bit (can I just say how shocking it was to have her death right after Robert? cause I feel like cc v rarely kills important characters so I thought Robert was fulfilling the death requirement yk?) and I LOVE to hate Sebastian. I'm gonna say something crazy here. I love Kit and Kieran more than I love a majority of the Blackthorns. Kit has been my fave character from this trilogy and I am not ashamed to admit it. The entire Ty Livvy spell shit was crazy because I completely felt Kit and wasn't angry at him for not outright saying that it was a bad idea, especially given the situation. I just can't believe cc had me expecting them to be fully in love with each other by then end, ONLY FOR THEM TO NOT EVEN BE ON SPEAKING TERMS (yes I know I need to be up to date w SoBH, I just need business day or two to marinate in my TDA emotions). The battle was epic, Julien's meeting was genius, Kieran is a great king, and the Malec wedding nearly had me sobbing. I'm gonna stop here w my thoughts on QoAaD cause it's getting out of hand. I am so sorry I am typing you up a full essay.

Predictions:

watch cc give us a 3rd plot that gets crazy because of some questionable heavenly fire incident (I mean, technically all three series plots that I've read have involved it if you count Jace's affect on Jem).

I'm super worried about a main character death because I think it would shatter me but it's also probably necessary? idk I dont wanna think about it

I also feel like something crazy is gonna happen to Aline and Helen because although they were literally exiled, nothing too traumatic happened to them in the main line of the story that the reader got to directly experience

not a prediction but truly me BEGGING ON MY KNEES for Jace and Kit content. I need them to be drama Herondales together. Also, Jace literally told him to come to him for personal advice so Jace helping Kit deal w his relationship w/feelings for Ty would be ideal (I really don't know how that would happen but let a person dream)

Final Segment:

Don't worry about mansplaining, youre good bae. I'm in the loop but I'm also not at the same time, if that makes any sense at all (there goes my promise of writing in a comprehensive manner). The only reason I haven't purchased the novellas is solely because it's more efficient for me to purchase a box set of a trilogy. (I do have the Codex and The Denizens of the Downworld books though). CC has done her best to make her world make sense but that woman writes up a storm and no matter what I'm always behind lol.

My (Personal) Thoughts on Seasons of Shadowhunters

Note: These are my personal thoughts about Cassie's latest project. Feel free to comment and reply down below and share your thoughts as well.

Recently, one of my favorite authors Cassandra Clare announced a Kickstarter project and it's all about Shadowhunters. I was excited when she hinted at it on her IG stories and was even more excited (with a few mixed feelings) when I finally got the email about the project itself.

My thoughts on this entire project will be broken down into segments/parts (so it won't be long paragraphs without breakers) so if you wanna hear my thoughts, do continue.

Part 1: Secrets of Blackthorn Hall

To be honest with you all, I'm not excited about this one. Well, it could be because it's available online (and here on Tumblr) so maybe that contributed to my non-existent excitement for it. I will also admit that I did not read every single entry of SoBH, I only read like the ones I cared about (Tessa's letter to Sophie is one of them) and the others, I may or may not have skimmed.

Art-wise, the art is beautiful, no doubt. But still, I'm quite skeptical about this one so maybe when it eventually comes, I might change my mind.

Part 2: Careful of Books Novellas

I am honestly not the biggest fan of novellas. I mean, I do read them to further understand the characters of a certain story (I did read A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas even though it was just the characters having a domestic Winter Solstice).

With this one, I am partly excited, partly not. I have no idea why but the closer it comes, I may be persuaded to be excited about it. It will feature a character whose future is interesting (I can only guess who that is...) and of course, it is set in the Shadowhunter universe (which timeline, I have no idea.)

I got to admit, novellas are fun but like it's not as fun as full-length novels with higher stakes and whatnot so I guess that is also part of it but I'll just have to see where we go from here.

Part 3: Notable Shadowhunters

Now, this is more of a collectible than a book because this will most probably contain more photos than words, which I'm not complaining about. It's always good to have fanart of your favorite Shadowhunters characters. I used to want to own the illustrated book but over time, that feeling kind of went away. I am a practical gal most of the time and I just thought that these photos would be scattered online anyway so if I favored a specific character's card, I would just get it online and print it myself if I desire to.

I'm not sure whether I will purchase it when it comes but who knows, maybe with some convincing, I might be persuaded.

Part 4: Better In Black Short Stories

This is probably what I'm most excited for. I adore the first three short story collections (Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, Ghosts from the Shadow Market and The Bane Chronicles) and this is probably not gonna be any different. I'm a romance lover by nature and to know that this might feature some of my favorite Shadowhunters couples makes me a little bit more excited. I mean, to be fair, I prefer some couples more than others but getting stories about the prominent couples are not out of the question for me.

I'm looking forward (and slightly hoping) to maybe seeing my favorite couples Simon and Izzy, Thomas and Alastair, Clary and Jace, and Magnus and Alec take the spotlight but I'm not opposed to the idea that other couples (Jem and Tessa, Julian and Emma, etc..) will also be featured since romance is a big aspect in the fantastical tales of the Shadowhunters. Plus, it's never seen before content, so that kind of adds to the hype.

I just need the Clace and Sizzy wedding plus Thomas and Alastair living together, if you get what I mean, okay?

Part 5: The Compass Rose Journal

I may or may not have screamed when I saw this in the email because as a fan of Thomas Lightwood, his compass rose is a sentimental symbol to me and to own a journal with that very symbol, oh, I can dream but I guess it's coming.

And for art to be included, uhm, yes please! Although I honestly thought it would just be like a notebook with like the compass rose etching on the cover but I guess I was wrong.

Conclusion

These are all my thoughts. I may have not worded it all well because I did mention in a previous post that I kind of drifted away from the Shadowhunters fandom for a while now but maybe with this upcoming content, my heart might go back to the shadows or stay in the sunshine where it currently resides. ;)

End of the Year Fic Recs!!!

I adore this as a game because I love reccing fics (and really should do it more often because So. Much. Good.Fic). This is going to be all shadowhunters I'm afraid though because I am still very much in the shadowhunters brainrot stage and haven't read much of anything else. (Also, sorry to those I haven't left a comment for yet, I WILL, spoons have just been low this year...) Also, I'll try to keep it to one rec per author because there are so many wonderful authors, but definitely go check the other fics of these people (if you haven't already) they're all excellent.

Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).

Running from the Night by @to-the-stars-writing. My forever fic spouse and the fic I reread themost this year goes to the fantastic, angsty Alec goes to live in a small village to get away from the Clave because the poor dude is traumatized fic from to-the-stars. This fic is my fics spouse (yes I got @to-the-stars-writing's permission to marry this fic) and I love, love, love it so much.

Flames to Embers by @notcrypticbutcoy: teenage!Alec is poofed into the timeline of his older self and it is lovely, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time. Also, teenage Alec is delightfully grumpy and Adult Alec is even more delightfully Done with teenage!Alec's grumpiness.

starshine and moonlight by she_who_reads (all_fandoms_reader) A three +1 fic where Alec isn't enough until he finally is. This fic is angsty and delves into Alec's (not all that great) self-worth issues and it hurts. Might or might not have cried reading it.

The Warlock's Cat by @dreaming-marchling. I hesitated a while which one I should pick from Marchling, but I ended up choosing this one (that said PLEASE go read Bleed for Me as well it is so goooood). The Warlock's Cat is a delightful "Alec gets turned into a cat and ends up in Magnus's care" fic. I adore it, and while it has its angsty or whumpy spots, it's mostly a nice, feel-good read.

Magnus Bane: Menace by AceOnIce To give some reprieve from all of the angst in this list, here is a fic of pure, unabashed fluff. Starring: Warlock Alec and Shadowhunter Magnus, the latter of which writes some truly ridiculous mission reports to HOTI Ragnor's grief.

Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.

The river cannot go back by @lawsofchaos1. Alec being Alec and completely in love with Magnus which leads to him committing treason like it's nothing. It is a short, brilliant fic that had me screeching like any @lawsofchaos1 fic does.

I'm finding it hard to breath by Honey_Hued_Hermes This one is pretty heave, but it does have a Hopeful Ending. Alec never promised he would tell Magnus if things ever got that bad...and sadly they do. Diving into Alec's Suicidal Thoughts and his Self-Harm tendencies.

A Most Fundamental Truth by autisticalec A missing scene from 2X10 when Alec tells Magnus that he's never been as terrified as when he feared Magnus had died from the Soul Sword. This one-shot dives into the "Alec was really very not okay emotionally" in this scene, so go read it!

The Difficult Task by @dani-dabbles: Another Alec is going through it emotionally fic (there are quite a lot of these on this list I just realized, oops). Thankfully, Magnus is there to offer support when Alec needs it because Magnus is still the best boyfriend. (also the repeated "not good enough"is evil and I am suing for emotion damages, please and thank you very much)

come to me (in the night hours) by @moonlight-breeze-44 Izzy is a supportive sister and is there emotionally for Alec right before his wedding to Lydia. This fic left me feeling all sad and weepy. This fic is technically part of a series, but as no other parts have been posted yet I am posting this in the one-shot part.

Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).

I've Always Dreamed of Meeting Someone Like You by ColorfulWarlock A non-magical Alternate Universe this time around. Single-dad, fashion designer, and CEO Magnus needs someone to draw his designs for him after a hit-and-run leaves him unable to draw for himself. Insert Alec, the wonderful babysitter, and game designer who seems to understand what Magnus envisions and draw them into reality!

Angelus ex Machina by BlueA The series starts with the sudden disappearance of demon activity and the way that lack of activity impacts the local Shadow World. I love the way the parabatai bond is portrayed in this fic (especially in the third installment).

through the fire and pain by alxndrlightwoods is another parabatai-bond deep-dive that goes deep into how a parabatai bond can change shadowhunters. It also explains why, if parabatai are so powerful, there aren't that many of them. Love this fic!

i cannot touch because they are too near by @faejilly nobody manages to write poetry without writing poetry quite like @faejilly for me, seriously the words are always so beautiful I am in awe. This fic has to be my absolute favorite though because deep-dives into the parabatai bond are interesting to begin with but the way Jilly decides to do so in this fic makes it go from interesting to absolutely brilliant.

Greater Love Hath No Man by @lawsofchaos1 Okay, I lied, here is a second Laws fic, but considering this fic led to the demise of my laptop, I felt that it deserved to be on the list. (No, that wasn't a joke). Dad!Alec is forced to send baby!Max away to a warlock orphanage when his magic grows too strong for him and leaves him injured. The pain is real and it is excruciating, tissues are advised.

Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.

As much as I adore reccing fics, doing self-recs is awkward, so I'm going to keep this to one rec before I combust into flames.

All Was Golden (everyone has probably read that one already because it's my most-read fic which makes this slightly less awkward than reccing any other of my fics.) Anyway, soulmate AU with a kind of ugly meet that has some angst.
