🍁March TC Challenge (Day 1-31)🍁

1. If you could change one thing about your TC, physical or personality-wise, what would it be? Nothing since they are already perfect!

2. Are they “your type”, or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected? It was kind of unexpected since they are all completely different

3. If they were an ice cream flavour, what would it be? S would be dulce de leche, B would be caramel, A is more strawberries and cream, M is cookies and cream, and then N is blood orange sorbet

4. Imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your TC. What would you guys do? Chill out and watch a crap ton of movies. Maybe even sleep together all night

5. What’s their biggest talent? N can play guitar (well, he is learning to play it, but he can play a few songs)

6. Be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not? Maybe!

7. If they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it? They would most likely ignore me for life

8. Are they a good singer? I haven’t heard them sing but if I did, I would think that they are good singers

9. If you could choose an outfit that your TC had to wear every single day, what would it look like? 100% SUITS

10. Are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? What about you? S is more athletic while the rest are more academic in my opinion! I'm more on the artistic side

11. Do they inspire you as a person? A bit

12. Are they an early riser or a night owl? I feel like A and S would be night owls while the rest would be early risers

13. Have you ever made each other angry or upset? If so, how did you reconcile? I’ve never made any of them mad, luckily!

14. Do you ever find yourself imitating them, either consciously or unconsciously? Yes! I catch myself doing it all the time. Even the little things

15. What do you think their love language is? What’s yours? S and A may be acts of service, B may be words of affirmation, M's and N's love language is definitely quality time. Mine would be physical touch

16. Have they taught you anything that isn’t school related? Valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc.? We have talked about everything and anything

17. What would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them? Nothing

18. Are they introverted or extroverted? What about you? They are all extroverts while I’m an introvert

19. Who’s more likely to start rambling about their interests while the other listens? Most likely me tbh

20. Do you feel guilty about having feelings for your TC? Kind of

21. Are you insecure about them liking another student more than you? Yes but no. I understand if they have a more favourite student

22. What kind of hairstyle would you love to see them in? MESSY HAIR

23. Do you think they trust you? I have no idea. It kind of seems like it

24. What’s the most comedic moment that’s occurred between you two? I fell in front of S once on a rainy day. It was so funny but embarrassing

25. Have you ever drawn them or written about them to vent your feelings? I have written about them a couple times

26. How do you feel when you’re around them? Are you so nervous that you can’t concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them? I have a good feeling when I’m around them. But sometimes i get nervous around M, especially when i'm asking them a question in front of the class

27. Do you guys have any inside jokes? A and I have some inside jokes which is nice

28. Do their morals, principles, or political views align with yours? I don’t know

29. Have you ever tried to get over them? Kind of. When I first started liking A, I was denying it at first, it then started to really get to me, so I just gave in. I am currently trying to get over B, which is sad, mainly because it’s kind of working.

30. If someone nice your age showed up in your life and you caught feelings for them, would you move on from your TC? Maybe and maybe not, tbh. It would maybe die down a bit, but I would still have some feelings for them

31. Have you ever said or done something that, in hindsight, might have been hurtful to them? Have they ever done the same to you? I don’t think I’ve really said anything to them or vise versa. But when B said that he was leaving, that hurt me to the core.

(Late) March TC Challenge

since I have been lurking, during march I wanted to do this challenge but didn't want to make a sideblog. so I decided to do it even if it was late!

1. if you could change one thing about your tc, physical or personality-wise, what would it be?

I don't think I would change anything. maybe only that he should interact with me more C':

2. are they "your type", or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected?

my type is usually someone less extroverted, though he is a dork and that's my type. so I guess 50/50. tho I like that he is extroverted, when he talls to everyone casually it makes me extroverted too!

3. if they were an ice cream flavor, what would it be?

looks wise- chocolate ice cream

personality wise- bubblegum

bubblegum because he is very bubbly and extroverted! I have bubblegum ice cream a LOT (every time I go to an ice cream parlor, 99% I get it) so maybe I'm biased-

4. imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your tc. what would you guys do?

get to know him better, I swear I'm the only tc blogger who doesnt talk to their tc much 😭. maybe go out for coffee and talk, or maybe dessert?

5. what's their biggest talent?

I'm not gonna answer in fear of someone finding out, but it's related to his subject and he is so good at it. even tho it's not something I would do, he is still incredibly talented!

6. be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not?

no, not at all . I'm shy, he's not, I'm quiet, he's loud. I'd rather stay at home all day, he'd rather go out. stuff like that

7. if they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it?

I think ignore, he is too nice to say anything if I'm gonna be honest. and I wouldn't want him to or else I'd cry lol

8. are they a good singer?

I wouldn't know, tho I imagine maybe!

9. if you could choose an outfit that your tc had to wear every single day, what would it look like?

that one sweater he wore for sure!!!!!!!! and maybe some slacks.

10. are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? what about you?

we're both more artistic, he is also athletic, tho I'm trying to be more a mix of all 3!

11. do they inspire you as a person?

yes, I suppose? again, we don't know each other well.

12. are they an early riser or a night owl?

he seems like a night owl to me, despite being an extrovert

13. have you ever made each other angry or upset? if so, how did you reconcile?

nope C:

14. do you ever find yourself imitating them, either consciously or unconsciously?

I mirror a lot due to my BPD, so during his classes when he is there I unconsciously do become more like him. if that makes sense? for example I become more extroverted and I can talk loud if it comes to it

15. what do you think their love language is? what's yours?

I think he is quite a touchy person, so maybe physical touch for him? mine is words of affirmation!

16. have they taught you anything that isn't school related? valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc?

yes! he said it to the whole class but I was the only one who listened intently.

17. what would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them?

be an asshole or insult me or see me as lesser or not believe in me. just in general thinking I'm bad or not good enough.

18. are they introverted or extroverted? what about you?

as I mentioned before, he's extroverted and I'm very introverted.

19. who's more likely to start rambling about their interests while the other listens?

it didn't happen yet but it's 50/50! I'm too shy to do it. but if he did it first then I might C:

20. do you feel guilty about having feelings for your tc?

yes. in hindsight, crushes are normal, but these feelings are CONSUMING me and my very being.

21. are you insecure about them liking another student more than you?

YES. that one girl who he complimented on a Star Wars shirt... I wanted to kms bcuz I am such a big fan when it was just her boyfriend's shirt..

22. what kind of hairstyle would you love to see them in?

maybe if his hair was longer, he looks like a porcupine currently.

23. do you think they trust you?

to be honest, there is no reason he should because we don't know each other well, but over time, I hope he does.

24. what's the most comedic moment that's occurred between you two?

once we were all reading a text and following it in our documents. this one classmate didn't have it stapled and she was struggling with it. she was literally just trying to find what page we were on. everyone else was focused on reading while I watched her, trying not to lose it while her papers were flying everywhere. but in reality I just looked at her very confused and then I look at A and he is staring at me trying not to laugh too. Idk if he was laughing at my expression or what the girl was doing. but it was a fun moment that I cherish a lot!

25. have you ever drawn them or written about them to vent your feelings?

nope, I don't want any evidence haha.

26. how do you feel when you're around them? are you so nervous that you can't concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them?

both, I get incredibly nervous and I also get really happy.

27. do you guys have any inside jokes?

not really. :C

28. do their morals, principles, or political views align with yours?

yes, we have a lot of similar views!

29. have you ever tried to get over them?

not really bcuz the crush started only recently. maybe November?

30. if someone nice your age showed up in your life and you caught feelings for them, would you move on from your tc?

I have a hard time moving on from unrequited love, so I don't know, probably no.

31. have you ever said or done something that, in hindsight, might have been hurtful to them? have they ever done the same to you?

nope, thankfully!

march tc challenge by @tryoutstc pt. 1 :)

i'm putting off school work and i'm bored so i'll do last month's challenge for fun :D i'll do the other parts some other time

day 1: if you could change one thing about your tc, physical or personality-wise, what would it be? i would make his hair shorter so he wouldn't wear it in a man-bun every single freaking day i see him. he's way too old for that hipster hairstyle😭

day 2: are they "your type", or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected? bc it's not a romantic crush as i said, i'll answer this according to which people i usually look up to otherwise. soo intellectually speaking, it's no surprise i find him fascinating because he knows so much about philosophy, books and humanities in general

day 3: if they were an ice cream flavor, what would it be? i feel like J would be a rare/unusual flavor like lavender. i had that once and i think it would fit lol

day 4: imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your tc. what would you guys do? i'd let him teach me about all his favourite books and philosophers, maybe try to convince him to buy some of them, annotate them for me and gift them to me haha we also don't really know each other that well, so i'd definitely just talk to him a lot, especially about my problems and how he's perceived me these past years bc i'm a nosy little bitch. there would probably be lots of late-night talks bc he's such a night owl. he usually sends out messages at like 3 am or something😭

day 5: what's their biggest talent? to digress from the formerly talked about subject and end up somewhere completely different. happens every time!

day 6: be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not? our sexualities don't align so nope lskghslkghlsks

day 7: if they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it? bc i don't have romantic feelings for him there would be nothing to confront - even though in one of his messages to me, he lowkey implied something like him thinking i had a crush on him and if i'm okay with our conversation but generally speaking, if someone had a crush on him i think he would overthink it a lot until he couldn't take it anymore and confront the student to talk it out with them. he would be very understanding and empathetic tho in the same message i mentioned before he actually mentioned a certain experience which, in my opinion, sounded like he already dealt with someone crushing on him in the past. i wanna know if it's true and what went down sooo bad

day 8: are they a good singer? absolutely not😭😭 i only heard him sing one time and that was enough💀

day 9: if you could choose an outfit that your tc had to wear every single day, what would it look like? hmm difficult. probably a blazer over a cozy grandpa sweater, some slacks and dress shoes. i feel like that fits his vibe

day 10: are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? what about you?

definitetly academic, but in an artistic way. he's a very unique thinker

March TC Challenge

1. If you could change one thing about your TC, physical or personality-wise, what would it be?

I don’t know, sometimes it sounds like he hates life a little? I’m not delusional that everyone must love their job, but it hurts whenever he expresses too much relief that a holiday is finally coming up, or, especially, when he doesn’t have to teach us for whatever reason (like when we eventually go on exam leave).

2. Are they “your type”, or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected?

I think he is my type in that he’s beautiful, teaches really well, and is super good to our class, but last year I actually didn’t find him that attractive so he probably wasn’t exactly my type, appearance-wise, not when T was still here.

3. If they were an ice cream flavour, what would it be?

I think he would be a fruit flavour that is naturally sweet with a hint of sourness.

4. Imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your TC. What would you guys do?

I would love to walk his dog with him, go out and eat something nice, maybe have an afternoon coffee date and read together, walk around the lake and just talk…

5. What’s their biggest talent?

Not sure about talents – teaching?? I know my man used to do music though 🥰

6. Be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not?

Probably not 'power' in the traditional sense, but I just feel like we’d probably make each other better people and that’s good enough for me.

7. If they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it?

He probably suspects by now, I think if it got too obvious and was making him uncomfortable he might confront me about it. He’d try to be indirect and gentle about it, though it would definitely be scary.

8. Are they a good singer?

I am very curious, I love his slightly hoarse, raspy voice, but idk if it would sound good singing.

9. If you could choose an outfit that your TC had to wear every single day, what would it look like?

This is very difficult to choose, my inherent love for white shirts says that, plus a vest maybe, though I also love seeing him in casual clothes like hoodies.

10. Are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? What about you?

Incas Lily is probably 70% academic, 10% artistic (we don’t get to see his artistic side so it’s hard to tell), and 20% athletic (he works out more than do sports), I’m probably 75% academic, 15% artistic, and 10% athletic.

11. Do they inspire you as a person?

So much, he is so much goodness and cares about genuine things and forms solid connections with people, he is so good and so loved.

12. Are they an early riser or a night owl?

Early riser most likely, he said on school nights he usually goes to bed at like 22:30 (I wish TAT).

13. Have you ever made each other angry or upset? If so, how did you reconcile?

I’ve always been good in class even before liking Incas Lily so I’ve never made him mad, and he only gets a bit upset at people who don’t listen or do work. There must have been times when he was annoyed with me but didn’t verbalise it, though. I was upset with him for making fun of subjects I like – other than Biology – and felt hurt, we kind of reconciled when he conceded the value in some of those subjects after I pressed him on it.

14. Do you ever find yourself imitating them, either consciously or unconsciously?

I definitely don’t imitate him as much as I did T, the only things I can think about is subtly adapting his sense of humour or hand gestures. I did steal his way of drawing bullet points, I don’t remember ever seeing another teacher draw it like that.

15. What do you think their love language is? What’s yours?

This is extremely hard to tell, not least because I don’t even know if Incas Lily is in a relationship, let alone seen it displayed at school. I would guess quality time and acts of service will probably be high for him. Mine are physical touch and words of affirmation - the latter works very well with having a TC, the former not at all.

16. Have they taught you anything that isn’t school related? Valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc.?

That time we had a talk about my mental health and stuff, he tried to boost my self-perception and made me see some of the maladaptive thought patterns I had. Especially when he was helping me prepare for my interview, we mostly focused on questions about myself, he helped me think of some of my qualities that I didn't know I had or couldn't admit to. Occasionally hearing his opinions on life during our lessons has also been very valuable.

17. What would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them?

I think anything that compromises his basic identity as a 'good' person, a good teacher – in terms of like moral standards and being a decent human being and all that. That’s the core of my attraction.

18. Are they introverted or extroverted? What about you?

His MBTI is introverted, but he is definitely quite social with many teachers as well as students. He seems more extroverted than me, I’m probably the more introverted of extroverts.

19. Who’s more likely to start rambling about their interests while the other listens?

He’s done it sometimes in lessons and I always love it, I also do on some occasions when talking about the subject I want to major in.

20. Do you feel guilty about having feelings for your TC?

A bit, sometimes, he’s so good to us it feels like I’m preying on that kindness. Like, he deserves a normal life without some girl semi-obsessing over him, although I mostly don’t actively inconvenience him with these feelings. At least this time he’s not married (😭)

21. Are you insecure about them liking another student more than you?

Always. I always said I loved T before any of his other students did, but I didn’t have feelings for Incas Lily until a year after he started teaching us, so I’m sure he likes a lot of other students better than me. I might be getting the highest grades in my class, but he doesn’t just want grades. Man, and I’ve seen him have really casual dynamics with some of the students a year or two below us and it sucks.

22. What kind of hairstyle would you love to see them in?

His current one is super pretty, it's curly and thick and frames his facial features beautifully. I miss when the top was dyed silver, though, that was the utmost beauty.

23. Do you think they trust you?

We don't ever really get into an emotional level of trust, but for any academic setting he must do. He let me self study a unit, he said he thinks I'd never be able to cheat, and he let me finish up an experiment alone in his lab when we were still doing experiments.

24. What’s the most comedic moment that’s occurred between you two?

It's hard to say, but it was quite funny when he used to give me quizzes for his lower year groups to do, especially when I sometimes get inexplicably caught up in them.

25. Have you ever drawn them or written about them to vent your feelings?

I write about Incas Lily often – usually in diaries and on this blog, sometimes in imagines.

26. How do you feel when you’re around them? Are you so nervous that you can’t concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them?

I used to almost always be really happy around him (he was my comfort teacher before I really had romantic feelings), it turned into nervousness maybe a few months back, and now a mixture.

27. Do you guys have any inside jokes?

There's one where I told him off for not teaching us something and it comes up in exams, but I think it also annoys him a little.

28. Do their morals, principles, or political views align with yours?

Maybe less so than it was with T, but with basic things like political inclinations, support for gender equality/the LGBTQ+ community/etc., being pro-choice, we are very similar on.

29. Have you ever tried to get over them?

Some days when it gets really bad, like during Mocks in January or sometimes this month, I have wondered whether I should or am meant to get over him, but it's so hard when seeing him makes my heart clench every time.

30. If someone nice your age showed up in your life and you caught feelings for them, would you move on from your TC?

We have so little time now, I doubt I could catch feelings for someone my age or move on from Incas Lily. Hopefully, I will after I go to university.

31. Have you ever said or done something that, in hindsight, might have been hurtful to them? Have they ever done the same to you?

Like for the inside joke, I (jokingly) complained about him not teaching us something, which might have been a bit hurtful, but I have truly tried to always be careful and good around him. I was hurt when he made fun of some of the subjects I like, especially during times when I was feeling really tense, and I do wonder whether he knew it affected me, even though it was all done jokingly.

1. If you could change one thing about your TC, physical or personality-wise, what would it be?

mango: I would say his fashion sense but then I've grown to like it HAHA so I guess his obliviousness because seriously I'm staring right at you can't you see me? But it's cute sometimes

passion fruit: he's too soft on the horrible students of his he looks scary but he's such a cinnamon roll, for his sanity he should scold them sometimes

2. Are they “your type”, or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected?

mango: the total opposite of my type in terms of likes and personalities, hence it was entirely unexpected

passion fruit: his likes are more my type but it was also unexpected because I already had one tc I didn't expect to like another (albeit this one not as strong but still considered)

3. If they were an ice cream flavour, what would it be?

mango: butter pecan??? chocolate chip cookie dough????? or maybe just plain vanilla/chocolate since he isn't the most complicated of people but it's sweet and simple, possibly even a little more complicated the more you eat it

passion fruit: maybe something like rum and raisin or coffee chip something that needs an acquired taste and probably is more expensive

4. imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your tc. what would you guys do?

mango: hmm probably something cliché like grabbing dinner and watching a movie, but maybe baking too because I know he's baked at least once, and maybe grab a morning run once or twice and maybe some other sports

passion fruit: I honestly don't know what he likes so maybe grab dinner to get to know him more, watch a movie and he can pick more activities? He looks like he bowls maybe we can go bowling

5. what's their biggest talent?

mango: running, sprinting and anything sports related

passion fruit: memorisation. His history memorisation is incredible

6. be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not?

mango: probably eh

7. if they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it

mango: I think he would be a little awkward around me but he's always sometimes awkward so

passion fruit: I think he'll ignore it

mango: have never heard him sing before

passion fruit: he's sang a line or two jokingly in class before and he's pretty good honestly

9. if you could choose an outfit that your tc had to wear every single day, what would it look like?

mango: oh goodness the red collared shirt of immense sexiness paired with khaki shorts/long pants that's the best of his looks red looks stunning on him all collared shirts look awesome on him

passion fruit: his usual black/dark blue dress shirts are wonderful

10. are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? what about you?

mango: definitely athletic he was a national athlete for crying out loud but he's also really academic

passion fruit: really academic and a little athletic

me: none LOL I am rather athletic but not as much as mango and academic but not really smart

11. do they inspire you as a person?

mango: YES

passion fruit: yes

12. are they an early riser or a night owl?

mango: feels like an early riser but all teachers have to report early to school

passion fruit: feels like an early riser too

13. have you ever made each other angry or upset? if so, how did you reconcile?

mango: when he confiscated my phone because I was checking the online timetable but he thought I was using my phone but lesson hadn't even started so I was super pissed and he was disappointed but we got over it

passion fruit: never

14. do you ever find yourself imitating them, either consciously or unconsciously?

mango: yeah a little in the way he sits LOL he manspreads a lot but its hot and he runs his hand through his hair so I do too

passion fruit: yeah in the way he explains stuff about history and teases people

15. what do you think their love language is? what's yours?

mango: I think he's words of affirmation? Maybe a little physical touch as well

passion fruit: words of affirmation for sure

me: quality time and words of affirmation and physical touch

16. have they taught you anything that isn't school related? valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc?

mango: he's taught me a lot about resilience and to look inwards because he often asks how I'm doing and I have to give a legit answer

passion fruit: he's taught me to be confident in myself and always ask questions and answer his questions as well because he always points me out to answer questions that the rest can't answer and he's taught me that I do enjoy academic validation whoops

17. what would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them?

mango & passion fruit: goodness they'd have to like I don't know do something really horrible

18. are they introverted or extroverted? what about you?

mango: he's like extroverted but not overly

passion fruit: he's introverted but not overly

mango: me rambling him listening

Not really HAHAHAHAHA

mango & passion fruit: I don't know man I love their hairstyles now

mango: hope so man

24. what's the most comedic moment that's occurred between you two?

mango: probably us playing frisbee together in physical education class??? All the times we see each other and wave as fast as possible with huge grins probably, or the time all the teachers had a huge boring meeting and he spent like an hour texting me instead of listening, saying that he wanted it to end soon

passion fruit: that one time in lesson that he was pissed at them not handing in the homework so he slammed the entire stack of worksheets onto my desk and told them he'll make me mark all these worksheets later and when the lesson was about to end I asked him if I was supposed to really mark and he said no/the time he made me finalise an extra class during the holidays because he says they'll listen to me more

25. have you ever drawn them or written about them to vent your feelings?

mango & passion fruit: writing definitely and drawing last night I just started to LOL

26. how do you feel when you're around them? are you so nervous that you can't concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them?

mango: I'm constantly nervous and genuinely super happy so happy that I always grin around him and I become slightly hyperactive around him and sometimes when he's talking I just stare at him and I always look forward to being around him

passion fruit: genuinely happy and I love the smell of his cologne LOL he's really chill and his humour is kinda dry but I love it not super nervous but sometimes awkward

27. do you guys have any inside jokes?

mango & passion fruit: we don't usually joke so no unfortunately

28. do their morals, principles, or political views align with yours?

mango & passion fruit: we're mainly the same

29. have you ever tried to get over them?

mango: tried, failed, never tried again

passion fruit: never tried

30. if someone nice your age showed up in your life and you caught feelings for them, would you move on from your tc?

sure

No, I'm kidding. Uhhhhh I'm really not sure

2. Are they "your type", or was falling for a person like them completely unexpected?

He's definitely my type, both physically and personality wise. He has dark hair and eyes, which is something I'm attracted to in most men for whatever reason, and he's incredibly smart, goofy, and kind, which I like as well.

4. Imagine you have a whole weekend to spend with your tc. What would you guys do?

*insert "oh my goodness I love this question!!!!" here*

If it was platonic, I'd do whatever he'd want to do. (I'm assuming his wife and children are out of town or something in this scenario) We could literally sit at his house and listen to music without speaking and I'd be perfectly content. He'd probably end up telling me stories or teaching me something, and I'd eat it up with a fork and knife. He could take me sailing, make me watch all the Star Wars movies, or lay on the couch and take a nap, and I'd be happy.

If it was romantic, hooooooo boy. I'd want to go on a romantic get away, maybe rent a cabin in the mountains or a house by the beach. Somewhere far enough away that neither one of us would run into anyone we know (so we could act like a couple). I'm personally not the biggest beach lover, but for him, I'd sit on the sand all day (he LOVES the beach). We could go out to dinner, go to cute shops if we're in a small town, and drive around just enjoying each other's company. Is it obvious that my love language is quality time? I'd want to dance with him and stay up late doing stupid shit and run around on the beach at night like we're in a movie.

5. What's their biggest talent?

I'm not 100% sure, he's talented at a lot of things. But right now, I think it's being a father.

6. Be honest: would you guys be a power couple or not?

Okay I'm a little bit biased here, but I really think so. We have so much in common, sometimes I feel like I'm looking at the older male version of myself. I'd love to be his girlfriend and have him teach me everything he knows about the world.

7. If they knew about your feelings, would they confront you about it or ignore it?

I don't know. I feel like he might already know, and if he does, he hasn't said anything about it. He says some things that maybe hint at it, but never anything outright.

8. Are they a good singer?

I've only ever heard him sing nursery rhymes, but I'd say his voice is fine. I'm definitely not someone who should be critiquing another person's singing voice lol

9. If you could choose an outfit that your tc had to wear every single day, what would it look like?

Black dress pants, a white button up shirt (with the sleeves rolled up, iykyk), a black blazer, a heavy wrist watch, and black wingtips.

10. Are they more academic, artistic, or athletic? What about you?

He's a nice mix of all three. As previously mentioned, he's incredibly intelligent, but he's also really creative and good at artistic things. He played golf and another sport I can't remember, and the way he talks about it, it sounds like he was pretty good.

I'm 90% academic and 10% athletic. I grew up playing sports, but always hated them. I was told I was athletic but never really cared lol.

11. Do they inspire you as a person?

Yes. I hope that if/when I become a mom, I'm even just half as good at parenting as he is.

12. Are they an early riser or a night owl?

He's a night owl forced to be an early riser

I think his is probably either acts of service or quality time. My main one is quality time but it's physical touch only when I'm *super* comfortable with someone.

16. Have they taught you anything that isn't school related? Valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc?

Mmm some of the "life lessons" he's subconsciously taught me are probably questionable things to teach a teenager (cheating on his homework while he was in school, things to do with law enforcement, etc) but he's also taught me some good ones. He told me the other day that I do too much work and stress myself out. I kinda already knew that, but it was nice to hear. Without ever uttering these words, he's shown/told me that life gets better. He and I have a lot of the same mental health issues, and to see him with a full time job, being a parent, and still having fun in life makes me feel a little better about my future.

17. What would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them?

Ooohh this is a tough one. I think when it comes to most people, I try to justify their actions with "compassion" or "logic". Like if someone screamed at me, I might just think that I either did something super wrong, they were having an off day, they took their feelings out on me, etc. So for the majority of things I could think of that he would do, I'd approach it what that thought process. But if I heard him saying something bad about women, or saying something discriminatory, that would do it for me. He never would, but if he did, my feelings would probably be gone instantly.

18. Are they introverted or extroverted? What about you?

We're both introverts :)

19. Who's more likely to start rambling about their interests while the other listens?

Him, 100%. It's happened a lot 😅

Yeah, tbh. I love the way he talks to me, and it would break my heart if I saw him doing the same to someone else.

A grown out version of what he has now. He always gets it cut so short, I think he'd look great if it grew to be around his ears (his hair is curly and I KNOW it would be so cute and fluffy if it got long)

It's a little bit of both. Sometimes I forget to listen to what he's saying because I'm too busy admiring him. Other times I'm so self conscious of how I look in the moment to listen. But most of the time, I'm just so happy he's around and that I get to spend a little bit of my day with him ☺️

The fact that I told him he was a ladies' man once and maybe something one of us said casually but I can't think of them right now

Political views, yes. He surprises me with how "woke" he is sometimes. Mostly yes for morals and principles. He's told me some things he's done that I personally wouldn't do, but they're really small, so

30. If someone nice your age showed up in your life and you caught feelings for them, would you move on from your tc?

That's kind of a hard question. I want to say yes, but I've never been in a relationship and don't think I'm really ready for one. Crushing on S is safe. I do genuinely like him, and if he wasn't married and made a move on me, there's a chance I'd act on it. But if a guy my age came along and we both had feelings for each other, I think I'd probably panic. I like having a crush, and I like the idea of people, but the reality just makes me too nervous.

31. Have you ever said or done something that, in hindsight, might have been hurtful to them? Have they ever done the same to you?

I mentioned it on the inside joke question, but I called him a ladies' man once. At the time, he laughed it off and I thought it was no big deal. A few weeks later, he started a story with "Don't slut shame me but-" and I was super confused. I asked him why in the world he'd think I'd do that, and he said "Oh, you know, that thing you said". He played it off as a joke, but I think it might have actually hurt his feelings. I feel so bad about it.

As for me, he's done quite a few things that have been hurtful. When we first met, he made my life more difficult. Not on purpose, but he saw the consequences of his actions and kept doing what he was doing. He's said some things that have made me feel stupid, and like he thinks of me as a kid, which hurts. I know that none of these things have been intentional, but it still affected me a little bit.

have you ever made each other angry or upset? if so, how did you reconcile? we have both made each other upset in a way, with me making her upset more times than the vice versa. the biggest thing i remember which made us mutually upset was when she reported me to the counselor for sh. i was upset that she did it after opening up to her, and she was upset because i blew up at her about it when all she wanted to do was help. we reconciled by talking it out (over paper because i WOULD break down face to face) and we have always wrote each other since <333

do you ever find yourself imitating them, either consciously or unconsciously? YES LMAO- IT'S SO BAD. i do this thing where someone says something i find funny or like once and i keep saying it for like 4 months- i am the official phrase stealer. she says stuff like "yahoo!" and "go *insert student name here*, go!" and i have accidentally stolen those. sorry, clover.

what do you think their love language is? what's yours? probably quality time. she said herself she's "a sucker for people." mine is touch + words of affirmation (more touch than anything).

have they taught you anything that isn't school related? valuable life lessons, insights on how you feel about yourself, etc? YES 😭. SHE IS THE SWEETEST EVER OMG- she has told me to not base my self worth on academic performance because i am "so much more than a letter on a screen" and she's currently trying to drill the self love and "EVERYONE DOESN'T HATE YOU CAS" into me. key word: "trying."

what would they have to do to make you lose feelings for them? oh dear god, i don't know. she'd probably have to become like my abuser for that to happen, which is highly unlikely.

are they introverted or extroverted? what about you? we are both introverted, but she has some extravert tendencies. i am very introverted until around my close friends, and then all hell breaks loose.

who's more likely to start rambling about their interests while the other listens? honestly, she is. i don't open up about that stuff because i don't want her to think i'm weird or stupid. now, rambling about their problems and favorite songs would probably be me (through writing because face to face is so anxiety ridden for me).

do you feel guilty about having feelings for your tc? hell yeah i feel terrible. why am i so attached to these poor women ohmygod 😭 i mean i have my suspicions that the attachment is from trauma and possible emotional abuse and things i lacked as a kid and currently lack now. but idk i still feel really bad. and i also don’t know how i see either of them. like pls stop thinking abt some nsfw things w/ them this isn’t helping things 💀

are you insecure about them liking another student more than you? for П i know i’m her favorite because it’s completely obvious. but i don’t want to be replaced but i know it’s inevitable now that i’m transferring schools. with Б i have never seen her interact with any other students other than this one kid because she doesn’t teach in a school setting. but im very sure i’m not even close to most liked. i want to be her favorite though.

what kind of hairstyle would you love to see them in? uhh idk. П cuts her hair once a year 😭😭 to a really short bob cut and i wish she kept it consistently that short bc it looks so good and really fits her!! and years ago Б had REALLY short hair like a pixie cut. i didn’t meet her when she had hair that short but it looked really good and i wanna see her hair like that again!

do you think they trust you? i go into Б’s house for 3ish hours a week for lessons and i’ve baby-sat her son so i think she trusts me lol. no but seriously she’s talked a lot about her mental health and i just know she doesn’t do that with everyone. and for П she tells me some pretty personal stuff about her and we’ve texted on her personal number. she is comfortable hugging me unlike with almost other students. so i think she trusts me.

what's the most comedic moment that's occurred between you two? i can’t currently remember anything with П because there are so many moments that just blur together. but for Б one time recently she was super enthusiastic and then she stabbed me with her viola bow pretty hard and she leaned in to make sure i was okay and i accidentally hit her and we were both laughing a bunch.

have you ever drawn them or written about them to vent your feelings? i’ve drawn both of them. Б i drew much more successfully but i think i’ve drawn П more. i wanna write but i lack motivation lmao.

how do you feel when you're around them? are you so nervous that you can't concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them? with П i can try to convince myself that when i’m alone with and/or physically close to her i’m fine, but i’m not. sometimes the way she looks at me is the most distracting thing in the middle of a piece, especially recently. now with Б i was nervous at first but i really do just love being around her. she brings me so much joy.

July TC Challenge Days 21-31

Band camp had started so my posts came to a standstill! I’ll finish up this challenge and try to make more brief but occasional posts since so much has happened since my previous one. ❤️

21. if you had the chance to go anywhere in the world with your tc, where would you go? what would you do?

I really don’t know…I guess it would be nice to go to an expensive hotel really high up in the sky, in a luxury room, like one of those pictures you’d see on Pinterest, and just spend time together up there. Maybe eat an expensive dinner, watch some movies, cuddle up in bed together, read a book. Just be. That would be amazing.

22. does your tc have any nicknames for you?

U used to call me “kiddo” all the time but he hasn’t called me that in so long. I don’t have a nickname from them, but M called me “sweetie” while reassuring me once when I was upset, and U called me a “doofus” and lightly tapped my head with his fist when I had made a silly mistake. I love it when they say my name but having a nickname would be cute too. ❤️

23. have you ever cried in front of your tc? why? how did they react?

I have. To summarize, two years ago I was really upset after a marching band rehearsal because there was a dot in our drill that I could never get perfect. I would try my best to backwards march as far as I could on tempo, but I would never reach the spot in the form…and the people around me were constantly giving me the same feedback. I was frustrated that my efforts were in vain, and stayed after rehearsal to rep it some more. I even tried to march differently, but during a rep, I had fallen with my sousaphone on, and I guess that was the last straw for me, so I started crying.

My section leader was worried, but they let me walk back to the band hall alone to have some time to myself. Once I walked inside, I tried to get everything together as quick as I could and once I did I quickly made my way to the door. As if it was fate, U was just making his way TO the band hall as I was making my way OUT of it. He was in a good mood, so when he was passing me, he said “Bye [R]!” and I responded “See ya.”, but my voice broke. This made him stop immediately and turn to me with a look of genuine worry on his face.

He asked me if I was okay, and I shook my head. He then told me to come with him and he walked me into his office to console me. Once M saw me enter and noticed how distraught I was, he dropped everything he was doing previously to listen to me vent. Both he and U listened to me so patiently and they had nothing but good and reassuring things to say to me. U had to help another student out about ten to fifteen minutes into talking, but he did everything so well, and M took over just fine. I’m really grateful for both of them, and this moment will always mean the world to me.

24. have you ever walked/drove to/from school with your tc?

I WIIIISHHHH. Aside from on the band bus for games or comps, I have not driven with them. I would like to, though. It would be nice.

25. do you know which teachers your tc is friends with at school? if so, do you like those teachers?

They basically just talk to each other, I think, and other fine arts teachers. I know them and think they’re pretty alright too!

26. why does your tc’s voice sound like?

Uhm… I literally could not explain that to you. If I find people that sound like them in a video or something I’ll link back, but right now I’m just not sure how to explain it.

27. do you like your tc as a teacher? are they a good teacher?

M can get very carried away sometimes as he is a perfectionist, but he is good at making points and good at addressing music in different forms. He is very intelligent when it comes to music and how things should sound, and though he can be nice about it at times, he kind of tends to focus on the things we need to fix more. He makes the same jokes and tells some of the same stories as he did in middle school…. but he has his moments.

In concert season, U is a little bit more chill with his teaching, at least in the sense that he takes some time off sometimes to joke around with his students or tell a story. He teaches in a way that’s easier to digest and has a more tolerable demeanor, though he can get onto the finer details sometimes, but I believe since he gives his kids the occasional mental break, that information gets taken in easier.

In marching season, though…. U pushes and pushes and tries to get as many reps as he can. He holds us accountable and will compliment us when we do good, but he will always challenge us to push us to our full potential. He loves to make fun of people during marching season as well, and joke around with us, but makes sure we can get back into an serious mindset immediately and do what we’re more than capable of doing. We cannot waste time.

28. does your tc prefer books, shows or movies?

I’m pretty sure M prefers movies, but he could prefer shows. I believe U is more of a show enjoyer though, maybe.

29. is your tc stern or easy going, in class?

It depends on the day, but they can be pretty stern.

30. how would you describe you and your tc’s relationship?

We find each other trustworthy. I’m very fortunate to say that I believe they trust me, and they see me as a good kid and a good example for the band. They’ve told my parents they love me lots so that’s probably good as well. They’re comfortable with talking to me and joking around with me too, which is so much fun.

31. do you address your tc by their first or last name?

Last name!!! I could never call them by their first name, at least not to their face. Haha.

26. how do you feel when you're around them? are you so nervous that you can't concentrate, or do you just feel happy that you get to spend time with them?

During the lessons I was usually just happy to be around him and tried to impress him. I was very good in his class and got a lot of his attention but it never made me feel uncomfortable. That was only the case when I would randomly bump into him outside of school because I never knew how to act and probably made myself a fool all the time…. (and although I’m a lot more confident these days, that’s still the case)

27. do you guys have any inside jokes?

There are some but today I would be too shy to bring them up again because I feel that it would be kinda silly.

Goodbye 2022, you were a good one

It is January 2nd 2023 - at least for the next 42 minutes.

I’ve posted a lot of pictures but no real updates about life. So here’s a little catch-up on how the rest of 2022 went.

I guess I should start with the fact that today marks 6 months of being with Carlos. I’ve never been happier. I love our love so much. We’re so good together and to each other, and we both say exactly what’s going on in our heads to the other. It feels so comfortable, I am forever going to be in awe that I found this kind of love. I never thought I was worthy of it. We had so many adventures and we’ve already discussed our future adventures this upcoming year, safe to say I cannot wait. More camping, more off-road adventures, all the things I used to do alone but now with the love of my life.

Kayli is moving in in March. Jesse is moving out and I know there’s a whole post about that so I won’t go on and on but I think us not living together anymore will be for the best. I’m excited to revamp the apartment, and to see Kayli more, and just have fun hangs. Most of our hangs have been in my apartment anyway so now she just won’t have to drive home. I feel like the vibes are just going to get so dang cozy.

I am a godmother now. Kristine gave birth on 11/11/22 to Mikaela Aviana Charlton. She was suppose to be born a Sagittarius but she decided to arrive early and be a Scorpio with a Gemini moon. I truly cannot wait for her to grow into a little person with her own personality. I flew home for a weekend just to meet her and spend time with Kristine and Rae. They are really killing the parenting game, and give me some hope that I can do it too but I know I wouldn’t be able to do it without Carlos. Carlos is like Rae in that he’s the calm chill parent and that’s exactly what I need to balance me out. Kristine seems so happy though, she’s become so emotional since becoming a mom and I absolutely love to see it.

I hosted thanksgiving and christmas at the apartment. It was just for Carlos and his roommates but still. It was so exciting and fun. I was very awkward on Thanksgiving but then Christmas was a breeze. I really love cooking for so many people and watching them love what I’ve made. Thanksgiving was a roasted chicken, Roasted vegetables, honey butter rolls, green bean casserole, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and apple sauce cake. Christmas was roast beef, onions au jus, Asparagus with whipped feta, mashed potatoes, more honey butter rolls, maple carrots, and a gingerbread cake.

Christmas in general was a hit. We celebrated noche buena at Carlos’ and he made Dominican food which was delicious. I could not stay up to midnight without napping. It’s going to be a challenge in future years, I can already tell. But Carlos got me a knife sharpener as his joke gift because I always have dull knives, a pet cam to watch Lilith while I’m away, and a pinned death’s-head hawkmoth. And his roommate’s got me gifts too which was the sweetest. He loved my gifts for him as well - a purple TC Tugger shirt (made by me), a personalized cookie tin with never ending refills, and a gold chain. He hasn’t taken the chain off since I gave it to him and it makes me so happy that he really likes it.

My birthday was also a good day. While I got the birthday sads the day before and found myself sobbing for no real reason, my actual birthday went well. I reserved brunch at the Lumber Baron Inn and we ended up being the only guests which was very fun. Then we went to the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative art which was just so cool, and then the Denver Nature and Science Museum which was also very cool. Their Gem and Mineral exhibit is so freaking cool. And then we had dinner at Ocean Prime. I thought it would be a nice cap off to the year since that is where I went in January for my first solo dinner.

I could gab on more and more but now it’s only January 2nd for 16 more minutes and I’m quite tired. But it’s safe to say 2022 has been a great time and I’m excited for what the next year holds.

A holistic look at Earth's chemical cycling sheds light on how the planet stays habitable

We all know Earth is special, but we may not fully appreciate how good we have it on this planet. Unlike its planetary neighbors, Earth has remained habitable for billions of years thanks to a complicated, ever-changing dance of elements.

A study by researchers at the University of Chicago, Rice University, and the California Institute of Technology sheds new light on the delicate balance of biogeochemical cycles that keep Earth temperate, hydrated and thriving.

The cycling of elements between the oceans, atmosphere, and land plays a role in keeping the climate stable, but it is so complex that scientists typically isolate pieces of the whole to try to get a better grasp on how they work. However, a new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on March 13, offers a different approach.

The researchers instead offer a broad, simplified point of view, using a new set of mathematical tools to illuminate relationships among the different chemical cycles that were previously hard to spot.

"Our approach provides a new way to identify the fundamental building blocks of stability in the chemical components of Earth's climate—the underlying ways in which the climate can be stabilized over geological time due to the movement of elements across the ocean, atmosphere, and rock reservoirs," said Preston Cosslett Kemeny, a UChicago TC Chamberlain postdoctoral fellow and first author on the paper.

"This is an elegant, simplified way to think about an enormous problem, which organizes a lot of previous research on elemental cycles into packages of chemical reactions that can be balanced and understood," said UChicago Asst. Prof. Clara Blättler, senior author on the paper.

Cycles and climate

We often take for granted that the planet Earth has supported complex life for hundreds of millions of years. But this stability was certainly not guaranteed—one need only look next door at Mars and Venus, which formed from roughly the same materials as Earth, but do not even currently support liquid water. What's Earth's secret?

A key aspect is chemical cycling. Elements like carbon, sulfur, and calcium move between the land, ocean and atmosphere in ways that have kept the conditions at Earth's surface relatively stable over hundreds of millions of years.

For example, scientists think the planet's temperatures are partly maintained by carbon shifting gradually back and forth between the ocean, atmosphere, and land. When carbon dioxide builds up in the atmosphere and heats the surface, it causes rocks to break down faster—moving carbon into the ocean and subsequently into rocks at the seafloor. Over millions of years, the planet gradually cools back down as the carbon is sucked out of the atmosphere.

Untangling these cycles has been the work of decades. It's challenging because the cycles last for millions of years, are endlessly changing, take place over the entire globe and interact with each other constantly. It's so complex that scientists often only examine pieces of the entire picture—typically considering a limited number of element cycles or a small subset of their interactions. But when pieces of the puzzle are missing, researchers have to make assumptions to fill in the gaps.

Kemeny wondered if working this way might tend to cloud the overall picture of how biogeochemical interactions give rise to planetary stability.

He, along with Blättler, Mark Torres of Rice University, and Woodward Fischer of Caltech, took a step back. They ran a mathematical analysis in which they considered a wide range of chemical reactions comprising major chemical cycles, but did not specify how or how much the cycles interacted with each other.

The result is a framework that identifies all of the major and minor combinations of reactions that balance Earth's carbon cycle and their relations to one another—something that had been missing from the field. Viewed this way, the Earth's climate can be represented by a set of interconnected chemical equations that must balance over certain time periods.

The authors said their work is useful as scientists continue to study the history of Earth and how the climate has changed over time.

"For example, say that you are considering a hypothesis for why the climate changed in the past—such as the major cooling of the last 65 million years," Kemeny said. "You can take this framework and use it to say, well if X process increased or decreased, then it should have also caused Y to happen, or would have needed to be balanced by Z, and that you have to account for those outcomes—so with that prediction we can look for evidence for the joint operation of the whole geochemical system."

Other relationships between chemical cycles can become visible when looked at in the bird's-eye view. "For example, this analysis identified a new way to balance carbon fluxes in the ocean-atmosphere system while accumulating atmosphere oxygen," Kemeny said.

Taken as a whole, "We hope it's a beautiful way to help understand all the chemistries that are involved in making Earth a safe place for life to evolve," Blättler said.
