Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is an insanely cool collection of vintage and antique animatronics, pinball machines, arcade cabinets, penny-arcades, nickelodeons, and a million other creepy-cool-crazy old coin-op contraptions from yesteryear. It's a one-of-a-kind exhibit and I love that it's right here in Michigan. If that sounds cool to you, please consider signing the petition linked above. Here are a couple local news stories that sum up this delightful slice of mechanized whimsy and automated buffoonery:

For those unaware, the city of Farmington Hills, MI used to play host to a huge food court once called Tally Hall (that much later spawned a band baring the same name) surrounded by a small strip mall called Hunter Square in the 1980s. The food court blew away anything that passes for mall food courts today. A man named Marvin Yagoda (I once worked for his uncle Herman at a dank sports bar in Southfield called McVee's) started putting in co-operated rides and love testers in the mall. Then he started getting old, rustic machines, fortune tellers, and other oddities gathered into a small center section of the food court right next to the Sanrio store.
Tally Hall eventually closed up....and it's memories still thrive on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/12156072137/
Some remnants of Tally Hall still persisted: Anita's Kitchen, The Honey Tree, and one was Marvin's Coin-operated menagerie, which he was able to set-up in a separate business in the 90s called Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum....filled with pinball games, video games, odd animatronics, and many mind-bogglers.
Marvin sadly passed away in 2017.
The city of Farmington Hills is now talking about demolishing the entire building and relocation may be near next to impossible.
My post is by-far not-the only one here on Tumblr making mention of this, but at least I can boast that I was there from the beginning (and not someone who hitched a ride by way of the band Tally Hall) back in the 80s.
Anyway, if anyone cares to sign the online petition-and upon completion they either request a donation or a chance to spread it on the more popular (eww) social media sites- here it is: https://www.change.org/p/save-marvin-s-marvelous-mechanical-museum
So, if anyone cares enough for another roadside attraction for weirdos (much like House on the Rock in Wisconsin or the Coral Castle in Miami) to survive, please take the time to sign.

i saw ur tags in the clown code post and if its real, i have to ask. how does one become a clown? are there courses for it?? is clown college real?? i want to be a clown. so bad. can it be a side gig????
Ok I’ll tackle these questions one by one.
1: it’s my belief that anyone can be a clown, all it takes is makeup and a fun attitude
2: yes, there are courses for it! I signed up for a clown group and we had a two day class where we learned all about clowning and the dos and donts!
3: clown college is real! It’s not a traditional college, but it’s real! there are courses you can take to get yourself registered and qualified as a professional clown!
If you register as a clown at the Clowns International website, you can even get your clown look painted on an egg, although membership is like $60 so do with that knowledge what you will.
4: yes it can absolutely be a side gig! I did some volunteer work on top of my original volunteer work with the clown troupe at a community center. It was really fun, but I bet you could find payed gigs too!
I think the world would be better if there were more clowns.

"I think it's better when you don't plan things... because you get too disappointed in things. But, I- this wasn't planned, it just grew. Started one little machine, then two, and five, and six, and... Only thing I'd probably do is like to have a bigger place to display more things, not get rid of 'em. But on the other hand, big is not better, it's, better is what's better, I think. How do you like that quote? 'Better is better.'" quote by Marvin Yagoda

🎧 :: the tally hall internet show
over the past three days i have been watching the tally hall internet show (THIS), which has been up since 2008 (i believe), and the most recent comments on the vimeo uploads were about 6 months ago? since i discovered tally hall, i have always thought there is a deeper meaning behind each song, and a full story per album. this led me into doing bits and pieces of research into what other people have thought, leading me to THIS. i found episode 3 (taken for a ride) was the most notable, it has something being spoken backwards, and is also the most surreal episode of the show, with flashing and colourful lights, strange images and of course, the ultimate pause test which resulted in (funnily enough), the lyrics for taken for a ride as a book format.
Tumblr media
i don't know if the format is of significance to working out the story (if there is one), other than the page numbers, which means this isn't the beginning of the story.
another episode which helps with taken for a ride specifically is the last episode, "marvin's marvelous mechanical museum". this shows the band visiting mavin yagoda (the guy who started the museum).
the episodes themselves are packed full of skits and the band getting up to some random shit, many episodes include "welcometonow.org", which is a mystery to most fans, as it was taken down(?), which isn't too much of a help, but it's been said that it was something about a cult, and the joke was that tally hall could get their "crazy fans" to join a cult, even though this started in 2007-2008, when they hadn't had the amount of fans as they do now.

Welcome to Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum
Known from coast to coast like butter and toast
From headlines to bread lines
From schoolrooms to pool rooms
No other place in the contiguous United States
Or other environs of the world, welcome
[Verse 1: Rob Cantor]
Can I get a T? ("T")
And if you hit me with the A-L-L-Y, then you'd see
Why the Hall is here for y'all
The mini-mall is calling us all in
So kids, pack up your mom's car, back up the Windstar
Kick it in drive and arrive at the mega mart
Slide the side hatch with pride 'cause your ties match
On booty duty like your name was Eddie Thatch' (Yarrgh)
W-W-T-H-D?
We like to kick it at the university
But all work and no play makes us crazy
So we jump in the bumping SUV
Hit the street, get the sweet tunes on
Do a donut on your mama's front lawn
And sooner than you know, you've found the rock 'n' roll show
At the Tizzy Hizzy, we'll be gone
[Chorus 1: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, Zubin Sedghi]
We're in the mini-mall
Working the carnival
We like to play it all
Welcome to Tally Hall
[Verse 2: Zubin Sedghi, Joe Hawley, Marvin Yagoda]
"Who's to blame?"
The automated players, I proclaim
Yellow tie, this suave fellow writes
Heterophonic tunes of how love bites
Red, the proud loud guy we adore
"Is my amp too high?" "No, turn it up more!"
So Grey in the back, sippin' 'gnac can hear
He's knockin' down the shots like Bill Laimbeer
Send home the locksmith, Green's got keys
To unlock the rock in the act if you please
Now open the case, give Blue the bass
And jiggle your badiggle all over the place
[Chorus 1: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, Zubin Sedghi]
We're in the mini-mall
Working the carnival
We like to play it all
Welcome to Tally Hall
We're in the mini-mall
Working the carnival
We like to play it all
Welcome to Tally Hall
[Verse 3: Joe Hawley with Zubin Sedghi]
Can I get a click?
Flick off the switch and we'll ignite the night in pitch
Singin' songs you like to hear, and the world will disappear
Then we'll be glowing in the dark, lighting up the park
Revealing that the Hall is the place that aims to please
With unpredictable games and antiquities
The collectibles so delectable
The unreliable style's undetectable!
Like I might rap like an English chap
Take you by the knickers and a bum you'll slap
You didn't think we had the gall
Well, bloody welcome to Tally Hall!
[Bridge: Joe Hawley]
We're stereosonic, we're animatronic
We're rappin' with the robo-electronic ebonics
A quick distraction, a mechanic attraction
Got a penny in your pocket for the slot?
(Rock!)
[Pre-Chorus: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor]
Hey, ho, don't'cha know?
It's a good old-fashioned puppet show!
That's right, quite the set
We're the marionette quintet
[Chorus 2: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, Zubin Sedghi]
We think we're playing in a band
But we'd love to give you all a hand
Woo!
[Chorus 1: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, Zubin Sedghi]
We're in the mini-mall
Working the carnival
We like to play it all
Welcome to Tally Hall
[Chorus 2: Joe Hawley, Rob Cantor, Zubin Sedghi]
We think we're playing in a band
But we'd love to give you all a hand
We think we're playing in a band ("Yarrgh!")
We'd love to give you all a hand
We think we're playing in a band ("Ah!")
We'd love to give you all a hand
what is this from?????????????
