“I’m telling you, this is so stupid!”
“If it’s so stupid, then why are you shaking in fear?”
“I’m not! I’m not! I’m just… cold! Shut up Pearl!”
It was a dark and stormy night, and Pearl and Gem were having a sleepover. They had already done all the usual sleepover stuff: forcing Impulse make them dinner, have a pillow fight, talk about the cutest building blocks. Now all that was left was the most stereotypical sleepover thing to do: try to summon an eldritch horror.
“Listen, Impulse told me this story back in Boatem, and I’m inclined to think it’s true.” The two had a few candles lit, and Pearl was holding one up to her face for dramatic lighting.
Gem crossed her arms. “And I think you’re just trying to scare me. Fine. Tell me the dumb story.”
Pearl lowered her voice and told the tale. “Once upon a time, there was a monster so feared that no one dared go against its powers. It hated one item more then anything, and it would rip into buildings just to get rid of it. Impulse said that one night, in Boatem, he saw it, rooting around in Scar’s factory, plucking every item frame from the place. They call it the lag police.”
“That wasn’t scary at all.” Gem said, hugging her stuffed sheep close and shivering. “And I still don’t believe you. There is no such thing as the lag police.”
“Well, if you don’t believe, then you won’t mind putting down these item frames, right?” Pearl pulled five item frames out of her pocket with a truly evil grin. “You wouldn’t mind summoning it, because you think this is all fake, huh?”
Gem gulped. “Yeah, I’ll do it. It’s all fake. Yeah.”
Pearl tossed her the item frames and drew a pentagram on the floor. “Go on then. Do it!” Gem hesitated. “What, are you a scaredy Gem?”
“No I’m not!” Gem slapped down all five item frames defiantly.
There was a tense moment of silence. No one moved, no one breathed.
“See, it’s nothing!” Gem crowed, starting to point and laugh at Pearl.
“ARE THOSE UNNECESSARY ITEM FRAMES??? Are you causing LAG?!??? ON MY FUCKING SERVER????” Xisuma kicked open the door, roaring. Both girls screamed in terror.

Just realized the reason we don't see Ronald in ch188 is possibly because he's too busy dealing with whoever this Al person is supposed to be. And the reason Al doesn't show up to rescue Layla is because they have their hands full dealing with Ronald....

Why did Lau look kinda amused at the fact that Layla is a bizarre doll? What if that’s his goal he wants the technology to create bizarre dolls or smth like that?
Lau's interest in bizarre dolls
Someone else was just suggesting that, about as soon as I posted my ch188 review. Lau's facial expression and the lighting are complicated. At first, I thought he was just shocked. But the more I look at his expression, the more I'm seeing awe and maybe even greed.
Though I'm not sure what use he would put them to on his own, I can imagine him being interested in having them for Qīng Bāng, perhaps for China itself. Everyone seems to be interested in weapons that can be used in international, even global, war. Like everything is a build up to the Kuroverse's First World War. Exactly the sort of event Sascha finds interesting, even if it's just to stay busy.
Is that Lau's real interest in helping the queen's watchdog... access to information on potential weapons of mass destruction?
Also, if he knew something was odd about Layla's aura... what does he think about Sebastian's aura? 👿 🤔

I don't remember when it should have ended. But it did, without us knowing. Without us trying to explain.
Perhaps a quiet death was best. At least I didn't cry when I was certain.
