You’re just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
“This is for you,” I handed a brown envelope to my best friend, his name scribbled on the front in my normal chicken scratch. He looked at me, confusion written into his features but I ignored it and looked away. Pulling my bottom lip between my teeth, I passed another envelope to Max, Dustin, and then Lucas, each of them taking it from my hand hesitantly, the same confusion written in their features as Steve. “Oh, and these are for Robin, Will, El, and Mike so if you could… give it to them if you can ever contact them again.”
I handed four more envelopes off to Steve, who pulled them from my hand slowly. “What is this?” His eyes softened as he stared at me.
“It's um…” I hesitated to tell them but knew that I needed to. They would find out anyway soon so there was no harm in me telling them. “a fail-safe. For after. Just in case they… things don't work out.”
As much as I trusted Nancy and Robin, this plan of theirs was faulty. There was a higher chance of it not working than it actually working so I held no high hopes. If they found a way to save me from Vecna then great! But if not then I had letters full of all the things I needed to say but wouldn't be able to. I wanted to believe it would go off without a hitch but when has anything worked out in my favor? Almost never.
There was a small part of me that held high hopes but I didn't let it show. I couldn't let it show.
Steve stood from the couch and rounded the coffee table, never taking his eyes off of me. “It's gonna work.” He says so softly that I could feel my heart crack in my chest and I have to force back my tears. “It will work.” He sounded like he was convincing himself more than me.
I only nodded, knowing that if I spoke I wouldn't be able to hold in my sobs anymore and I refused to let him or the kids see me cry. Mainly the kids. I didn't need to alert them of how terrified I actually was of dying. They didn't need to know that every bone and cell in my body trembled with fear with every passing second.
“I wanna visit my mom and I need you to drive.” I turn to grab my bag, shoving the letter for my mom into it and sling it over my shoulder. Steve looks like he wants to protest but decides against it and pulls his keys out of his jacket pocket.
Without waiting, I rush outside and feverishly wipe at my face to get rid of the tears that forced their way out. I was leaning against Steve’s car, waiting patiently for them to come out when I heard the sounds of a clock chiming in the distance.
No.
Slowly turning my head, I could see the grandfather clock near the fence, its hands getting closer and closer to the twelve. I was running out of time and it was becoming increasingly more obvious.
God, I hope Robin and Nancy were making headway and knew how to save me. Dying at nineteen is not what I had planned. I had so many things I wanted to do and places I wanted to see but if I died tonight, I wouldn't get that chance. I wasn't okay with that and I was not okay with Vecna taking that away from me.
Turning my attention away from the clock, I met eyes with a frowning Steve. He didn't want to do this, I could tell, he just wanted to keep me inside and safe but that was the thing… nowhere was safe. Not outside or inside.
“Where are the kids?” I asked when I noticed that they weren't climbing into the backseat, fighting over who had to sit in the middle.
“Far from you.” He sneered, his words cutting through me like ice. “You honestly believe I’d let them near you after everything? Being near you would kill them.”
I stumbled back, staring at him in shock, his eyes dark and cold. This wasn't happening. He wouldn't say that to me ever. Especially today.
“What are you–? Steve, what are you talking about?”
“Don't you get it yet? Everything that had happened– everyone that has died or left, was all because of you. You make everyone around you miserable.” I shook my head, not believing anything that was being said. “Why do you think your mom killed herself and your dad left? It’s because they couldn't stand you.”
My heart dropped. This wasn't Steve… no, he would never say that. He wouldn't…
Steve has never done anything to hurt me on purpose and he wouldn't start now. “This isn't Steve.” I mumbled, squeezing my eyes shut and willing myself to wake up from this vision.
I felt hands squeeze my shoulders and pushed back causing me to lose balance and fall against Steve’s car. “Your time is out, Y/N.”
“No! No!” I shouted and pulled my legs up to my chest, my hands covering my ears.
“Y/N!” I snapped my eyes open to find Steve– my Steve staring back at me, his eyes wide with panic. “You're okay, you're okay,” He repeated when he noticed my frazzled state, helping me up from where I was sitting on the ground and pulling me into his chest.
You’d be like Heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much

At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive
We arrived at the cemetery where my mother was buried just on the outskirts of town and I was quick to exit the car. I made it a few feet from the car when I heard Steve calling my name.
“Steve, please, just wait in the car.”
“Just wait. Y/N, please.” He pleads with me and takes a couple steps until he is standing right in front of me. “Just listen to me, please.” I don't say anything and he takes it as a sign to speak. “I know something happened back at the Wheeler's before we left. Was it Vecna?”
“No, I'm… I'm fine, Steve. I mean, as fine as someone who's about to die can be, at least.” I fiddled with the strap of my bag, looking down at the ground for a moment.
I couldn't handle him staring at me with those big eyes full of terror and confusion and hurt. I could handle a lot of things but seeing the way he looked at me wasn't something I could do today. If I somehow didn't die then maybe I could look him in the eyes again.
“You know you can talk to me. Right?” He asks softly.
“I know.”
“Then why… Why are you pushing me away? Especially today when all I want is to be near you and make sure you're safe.” He pulls his letter out from his back pocket. “Look, I don't need a letter. I don't want a letter. I just want my best friend to talk to me. I'm right here so please, just talk to me.”
I bite my bottom lip, not knowing what to say to him. What could I possibly say to make everything seem like it's okay? There was nothing because nothing was okay. Everything was a mess and my best friend was begging me to talk to him but I couldn't. I couldn't bring myself to. I couldn't tell him everything if I was just gonna die in the next few hours, it wouldn't be fair to him. To me.
“If Robin and Nance find a way to save me then I’ll tell you everything I wrote in that letter and more, okay? Just, for now, wait in the car. I won't be long.”
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you
Tumblr media
Pardon the way I stare
There's nothing else to compare
I sat cross legged in front of the headstone that read my mother’s name and pulled the letter I wrote her out of my pocket. I slowly opened the envelope and pulled out the single sheet of paper that said everything I needed to say. Gently unfolding the paper, I spoke, “Hey, mom. I'm sorry it's been a while, things here… they've been crazy. But uh, I don't know, I guess I wanted to stop by and tell you how much I miss you. Because I do, like, a lot. Every day I think of you and wonder what my life would look like if you didn't die so soon.” I smiled sadly and adjusted my position so I sat on my knees. It wasn't the most comfortable but my feet were beginning to fall asleep.
Taking a deep breath, I looked down at the paper and began reciting my words. “I often wonder how my life would've turned out if you had stayed with me a little longer. I imagine that we would've left Hawkins and you would've gotten that job you always wanted and met someone who could make you happy– happier than what you were. I liked to think that everything would be better but the truth is… I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I miss you like crazy and life hasn't been easy without you but I have the best friends I could ask for, even if most of them are children.” I pause to wipe away my tears. “I have Steve, Dustin, Max, Lucas, Will, Mike, Robin, Nancy, and El by my side, though El and Will live in California now, they're still two of my favorite people. I think you’d like El, she's a lot like you, Mom. Always finding a way to make the people around her happy like you did. She's just… she's the little sister I never got. Anyways… Granny is still as crazy as ever but misses you so much. She comes whenever she can but it's getting harder for her to move around. I think… I think she'll be joining you wherever you are soon, which hurts to think about but she's ready. I know she is. Pop is… gone. He left a while ago and we haven't heard from him. Granny was heartbroken but she's doing better. Uh… I finished high school and I'm taking the year to figure out what I want to do like you always told me I could. Granny isn't happy about it but she understands. And…” I look around, taking another deep breath to steady myself.
It was always hard to visit my mom's grave knowing that I could've done something to save her. If I had just stayed home that night like she wanted me to instead of going to Steve’s, she would probably still be here.
“Some things are happening now and I'm really scared… like, really scared. I don't want to die, Mom. I don't want to leave these people but if I do, I hope I get to see you again. I love you, Mom, and I should’ve said it more and I'm sorry I didn't. And I'm sorry I didn't stay home that night like you wanted. I should've and I'm so fucking sorry. Love your daughter, Y/N.” I wiped under my eyes and sucked in a breath of air while I folded the letter and placed it back in the envelope. I moved to place it on the ground when the sky above me turned gray.
I looked around in terror and heard the familiar sound of a clock chiming and a terrifying laugh followed by the sound of my name. I turned towards the source and saw my mom walking towards me, her wrists dripping with blood. I stood from the ground and gulped in fear.
“You have no idea how long I've wanted to hear those words. But that's not true, is it, my sweet girl? You had a bad feeling all day and yet… you still left. Maybe you knew what I was going to do and didn't care enough. Maybe you wanted me gone.” She took a step closer and I backed away.
“Mom, that's not… that's not true.” I sobbed.
My blood was cold and my bones were trembling. She wasn't here. This is Vecna. This isn't… it isn't real.
“That's why you left the house that night. It's okay, you can admit it. There's no more need to hide the truth.” She continued, taking big strides forward while I continued to walk backwards trying to tell her it wasn't true.
I didn't want her to die. She was my favorite person on the planet but Steve and I had been planning a night out for so long that I left despite her begging me to stay. God, I should've stayed. I never should have left.
Why couldn't I be a good daughter and stay home? It was a simple request and I fought her on staying home. I left for the entire night and when I got home…she was lying in her bed with her wrists slit and a note on her bedside table. It wouldn't have happened if I just stayed.
Maybe it was my fault.
Maybe a part of me knew and wanted her gone but that wasn't…. That couldn't be it. There was no way I could have known, there were no warning signs but I was barely home that year so I couldn't have seen them even if I tried.
“You can tell me, sweet girl. You can tell me how much you wanted me gone…”
“No, it's not true, I swear.” I backed up in a tree and screwed my eyes shut. This wasn't real.
Wake up, Y/N… come on, wake up.
I felt my mom’s breath hit my cheek and let out a sob opening my eyes but instead of my mom being in front of me, it was blue eyes staring at me and a large charred hand reaching out to grab me. I ducked and ran.
There had to be a way out.
I saw a flicker of red and slowed to a walk. It was like a storm but there wasn't any rain, instead there were floating pieces of a house and I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
“What are you doing here?” A demonic voice asked, sending a shiver down my spine. I ignored it and kept walking but sped up my pace until I reached what looked like a burnt down forest with a few trees left standing and looked around.
I walked closer to the tree in front of me and let out a gut wrenching scream when I saw Chrissy Cunningham’s body trapped in a tree, her bones clearly broken and her mouth wide open in a scream. I fell back as I stumbled and found myself leaning back against another tree, looking up I saw a body in a similar position to Chrissy’s but this was a man. It was Fred Benson, a senior with Nancy who died yesterday.
“Do you like my collection? You'll be joining them very soon.”
Vecna.
I scrambled up onto my feet and took off in the other direction but a vine wrapped itself around my ankle pulling me back to the ground and dragging me until it threw me into a tree. A vine wrapped around my throat, choking me while I struggled to break free from the ones wrapped around my wrists.
A soft melody began to ring in my ears but I was too focused on Vecna’s approaching figure but the sound of Steve yelling my name made me tear my eyes away from the demon in front of me. I watched as hole opened up in the red sky and saw my friends crouching next to my body, yelling at me to wake up.
“We’re right here! Y/N, come on!” I heard Steve shout, the melody that was ringing in my ears became increasingly louder and I recognized it to be my favorite song.
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
“They can't help you, Y/N.” Vecna turned his head away from the opening and sneered, “there's a reason you hide from them.”
But if you feel what I feel
Please let me know that it's real
The vine tightened around my neck and I gasped for the air I desperately needed. “You belong here. With me.”
“You aren't here.” I rasped, tearing my eyes away from the opening I wanted to run to so badly. I didn't want to be here anymore. I wanted to be out there with my friends and tell Steve all the things I needed to say.
I needed to tell him that I have been desperately in love with him for as long as I could remember and I couldn't die before I got that chance. I wrote it all in the letter but I really didn't want him to find out when I'm dead.
“Oh, but, I am.” The vines tightened. “I am.” He reached his claw-like hands out to my face and I tried to lean back.
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you
I could faintly hear my friends shouting my name, begging me to wake up and I felt more tears slip from my eyes. Vecna’s hand got closer to my face and I could see the opening between the space in his fingers, my body was floating and the others were trying to drag me back down but I was too far up.
The time to wake up was now.
I thought of the conversation I had with Steve before I went to my mom's grave. I thought of the way my heart broke when I saw his eyes lined with unshed tears and the terror he was hiding. I thought of the first day I met him when I was six and how big he smiled when I asked if he wanted to be my friend and share my snacks since he was sitting alone at recess with nothing. I thought of the middle school dance when I was all alone during a slow dance and he left his date to dance with me. It was the moment I knew I loved him and that I would for a lifetime.
I love you, baby
And if it's quite alright
I thought of when I first met the kids. They had been running from some people from Hawkin’s lab and came pounding on my front door begging me to let them in and I did. They were so grateful and kept coming around. It was annoying at first but then I realized I didn't mind it as much as I once did.
I need you, baby
To warm a lonely night
I thought of when I took Max and El out shopping when they were pissed at Mike and Lucas. She wasn't supposed to be out in public like that for her protection but I knew she would be safe and that she needed to get out of that cabin for a couple hours. She had her first sleepover that night and she was so happy.
I love you, baby
Trust me when I say
I thought of when I first met Robin. We got acquainted quickly considering we were trapped in a secret russian base trying to find out what they were planning. She quickly became one of my best friends.
Steve and I kept trying to help her find a girlfriend but it was proving to be hard but it was fun to annoy her with.
Oh, pretty baby
Don't bring me down I pray
I could feel the life slipping out of me but I needed to keep going. I had to keep going.
Steve crossed my thoughts again. This time it was a memory of when we had our first fight. It was something so stupid but I couldn't help but pick a fight over it because I was jealous. I was jealous of how much time he was spending with Nancy despite them dating.
Like I said, it was stupid.
We didn't talk for days after and it hurt. It hurt like hell not having him to talk to everyday even if it was for a little bit. A little bit I could handle but never? That was something I couldn't handle.
I closed my eyes tightly and let all my favorite memories of my friends flash through my head.
Hearing them shout my name through the opening again laced with more desperation than before gave me the strength I needed to rip at Vecna’s neck causing him to let me go as he stumbled back in pain with a shout. I fell to the ground and forced myself into my feet, running as quickly as I could. I didn't want to spend another second here.
The melody ringing in my ears picked up as I ran and dodged the falling bricks that were aimed at me. I nearly got hit a couple of times but I forced myself to continue running.
My knees started to burn but I couldn't stop. I was too close. I was almost out.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay
Oh, pretty baby, trust in me when I say…
The closer I got, I could see Steve frantically reaching for me with tears streaming down his cheeks as he screamed my name, begging me to come back to him. My heart clenched and I ran faster than I ever had in my life.
Suddenly I felt myself falling and my ass hit the ground as arms wrapped themselves tightly around me. I breathe in the familiar scent of Steve’s cologne followed by the soothing sound of voice. “I got you. I got you, love.”
I let out a sob and held onto his forearm with my hands, gripping tightly like he was my lifeline. I felt the others put their hands on my legs, they were either laughing or crying or both but I didn't want to open my eyes, scared that I would be back in that place with Vecna.
“I got you,” Steve murmured once more and I felt his lips press against my head and I squeezed his arm tighter.
“We should get going. Robin and Nancy are meeting us back at the house.” Dustin spoke up, breaking the silence that fell upon our group. The hands that were on my legs left and I reluctantly opened my eyes just in time for Steve to slowly remove his arms from around me and start standing.
I stood slowly, brushing off the dirt from my pants and took a moment to collect myself.
“Let’s get outta here.” Steve grabbed my hand and let me lean against him as we walked back to the car with Can't Take My Eyes Off You still playing through my walkman and my eyes heavy with exhaustion. My muscles ached beyond belief but it was proof that I survived.
I may have survived Vecna today but I knew it was far from over.

Every few minutes I glance over at my window. Blinds open, the moonlight shines through the glass, onto my carpeted floor.
8:30.
She should be here by now. What if she got hurt? I mean, with all the weird stuff going on lately, anything is possible.
Finally, a small rock hits the bottom of my window.
I rush over to open window, looking down at the grinning girl.
" You gonna let me in? " She asks after a moment. " Or are we gonna have to Romeo and Juliet this tonight. "
I roll my eyes, leaning my head out of the window slightly. " You're so dramatic. "
" That's what you love about me. " She whisper shouts.
" I guess. " I chuckle, moving back into my room.
There's a lot more I love about Max, most of which she doesn't know about.
We're just friends, Y/N. Calm down.
I tip toe quietly into the kitchen, opening the door as gently as possible.
Max is waiting patiently on the other side, her backpack messily slung over her shoulder. " About time. " She teases.
" Oh shut up, Max. " I mumble, closing the door behind her.
She quietly laughs and we head up to my room. Once the bedroom door is closed, she drops her bag onto my floor, plopping onto my bed in the process. Max lets out a small sigh. " I missed you today. "
I lay down with my head on my arms, turning to face her. " You did? That's shocking. "
Max rolls her eyes at my sass. " I always miss you. You're my best friend. "
Best friend. Always the best friend, never the partner.
" Your my best friend too. " I smile at the girl.
Max lets out a laugh. " Of course I am, babe. " She flips onto her stomach so she can look be at my level.
Butterflies flutter at the pet name, something she's been calling me for a while now. I don't really remember when it started. Freshman year maybe? That's around the time we started having more and more sleepovers. My parents finally let me stay over at someone else' house.
" What's going on in that pretty head of yours. " Max asks, gently tapping her shoulder against mine.
I snap out of my thoughts. " Oh, just trying to remember when you started calling me 'babe'. I don't really know though. "
Max's eyebrows furrow. " I remember. It was like a week after we started dating, the summer of Freshman year- "
My eyes widen. " What? "
Max looks at me with a confused expression. " What do you mean, 'what'? "
" We're dating? " I ask, my heart beginning to pound. " Since when? "
Max pushes herself up into a sitting position. I quickly follow. " You seriously don't remember? I asked you out and we went to the arcade and then to get ice cream. I walked you home. That was our first date. "
I shake my head. " You never asked me out, you asked if I want to go to the arcade after school...with you. "
That was our first time going to the arcade without the others. Just the two of us. We played games for hours before finally deciding to head over to Hardy's for an ice cream cone. Now that I think about it, I think Max might have paid for my cone.
Max laughs slightly, nodding her head. " Yeah..." She says in a playful 'duh' tone.
" To be fair, " I point out. " You never actually said ' Do you want to go on a date with me? '. I mean, I thought we were just going to hang out. "
Max rolls her eyes. " Well then what did you think when I started calling you babe? Or like holding your hand? "
I shrug. " I don't know...that we were best friends? I mean, you call me your best friend all the time. I sorta assumed you just friend zoned me. "
Max lets out a groan, gently crashing her forehead into my shoulder. " You are my best friend. You're my partner and my best friend. "
" And you've never actually kissed me - "
" I did! " Max snaps back up. " That one time at Mike's party. "
That night was our first high school party. It wasn't very big but there was a few bottles of beer and no parents around.
" We were playing spin the bottle. That doesn't count. You had to kiss Lucas too. " I nervously begin to fidget with the hem of my shirt. How did I not know we were dating?
Max puts her warm hands on my shoulders, causing me to look up at her. " Fine. " She gently grabs my chin before leaning towards me. Her warm lips meet mine, causing my eyes to flutter close after a moment of surprise. Her soft lips gently guide mine. Electric shockwaves run through my body. My heart pounds in excitement.
Ever since our kiss at Mike's party, this is what I've been wanting. I never thought it was actually going to happen.
Max's hand finds its way behind my head. She gently plays with the hair at the nape of my neck before pulling away for air.
I let out a small pant, eyes meeting hers.
" I definitely missed that. " Max grins.
Warmth floods my cheeks. " I'm such an idiot. " I mumble.
Max shakes her head, her red hair fluttering softly back into place. " You're not an idiot. I guess I should've been more clear...How about this, " She lets go of my shoulders.
I look at her in confusion.
She scoots back slightly so we have more room between us. " Let's try it again. " She grins. " Hey Y/N, do you want to go on a date with me on Friday? "
My stomach churns from excitement. " I'd love to, Max. " I grin back.
Max's smile widens. " Really? You just made my day. "
I roll my eyes.
" I'll pick you up at 7. Sound like a plan? "
I nod. " I'll be...here. " I laugh slightly. A thought pops into my head. " Wait, does anyone know?- Or I guess, did anyone know we were dating? "
Max nods. " Yeah...our entire friend group. And my mom. "
I shake my head. " How did I not know? "
Max pulls me down onto the bed with her, our hands resting in a lazy hand hold. " Honestly, I'm not sure. I mean, Dustin's made a couple jokes about us dating. "
" I thought that was just him being...weird. " I mutter.
" Don't worry though. Our first official date, the one we both know about, is on Friday. " Max leans her head gently onto my shoulder.
How did I get so lucky to end up with a girl like Max?

Sun and Moon
Tumblr media
Alright the beginning is completely Billy's redemption because he deserved redemption not death. And honestly Max hurting in S4 killed me. So, Max gets her brother back. Eventually BH x Reader.
Neil goes to far and someone very unlikely fights back, Billy realizes his sister and Stepmother actually do love him. Unfortunately sometimes love hurts and you have to hurt the people you love to save them.
Also this does kind of bounce around for a bit between the present, past, and Billy and Max's childhood.
Tumblr media
Beeaaa-Beeeeep!
"I'm coming!" Max shouted running out of the door, Billy came out behind her carrying his bag over his shoulder.
"Code Gray Code Gray." A large group of kids and young adults sat in the hospital waiting area.
"That's probably our angry little asshole." Steve muttered. El turned on him sharply, glaring.
"My sister! Where the fuck is my sister!" He fought against the security as they secured him to the bed with padded restraints.
"Someone get me some Oxazepam." The nurses and doctors were in full PPE. A nurse injected a small dose of tranquilizer into his IV line as he fought.
"Mr. Hargrove! You need to remain still. You were involved in a major fire, there are wounds and burns covering fifteen percent of your body. Your sister is fine."
"No no. You don't understand it wasn't a fire." He shook his head violently, "There was this monster, my little sister, she's in danger."
"That is the trauma and morphine talking." A doctor whispered quietly to Neil, Susan, and Max. They had his bed turned so they couldn't see anything but the top of Billy's blonde curls through the glass. All they could hear from the room was Billy's shouts. "He might say some very strange things." Billy threw his head back violently onto the pillow as the doctor started walking away.
"He's not going to get rest and his condition is only going to worsen." One of the nurses muttered.
"Fuck! Why is nobody listening to me?! Max needs help!" He called out.
"Give me a gown." Max demanded.
"Sweetie no he's badly burned you don't want to see-" Susan started.
"She said he won't get better, if he's freaking out like this he won't get better. Give me a gown, give me gloves, mask, whatever I need to be able to go in there with him. I'll keep him calm and the doctors can fix him." Max assured them, "I won't be scared."
Billy still looked like Billy to her. What the doctors mistook for burns were the wounds from the mindslayer, they probably just didn't believe what was in front of them and chalked it up to the most logical thing. By the time they had finally let her into the room the medicine they gave Billy had kicked in so now Max sat on a rickety shitty chair waiting for him to wake up again as she held his hand. Eventually she too fell asleep.
A strange feeling woke Max, before she realized someone was messing with her hair. She sat up quickly, Billy's eyes looked bloodshot and tired.
"Hey." She whispered quietly. Billy's eyes turned down, "Please look at me."
" I can't. Your face-" Billy's hands clenched at his side as he forced his head up. Those were Billy's eyes, that's how Max knew he was there.
Neil had left. Max's mom has wandered off to the waiting room to find some sleep.
"Billy that was the Mindflayer." He was looking away in the distance.
"That thing, it showed me horrible horrible things. And then when it took over completely…" Billy shook his head, "I turned into my father."
"Billy, that thing was using your body, I know you'd never hit me if it was really you."
"Not just then. Before, before the mindflayer. How I yelled at you and jerked you around, I turned into him." He swallowed, "I was just-"
"You were in pain. El, she saw into your mind she told me everything-" Billy paled.
"How much is everything?" Max swallowed.
"Your dad yelling at you for not being good at baseball, your parents fighting, your mom leaving. You beating up some kid up and calling him a pussy, meeting me."
"I swear to God Max, I did some shitty things because I'm a fucking dick. But most of it I was protecting you, I was trying to prepare you, give you a thicker skin because I wasn't going to be around forever. And I'll be damned if I have to bury another sibling." It was out before he could stop it.
"Another?" Billy shook his head. His voice echoed in her mind, much younger back in California.
'Stay away from the stairs you little punk. That's why there's a baby gate up, to keep babies like you away.' The house had a long wooden staircase that led into the backyard that they never used.
That tattered broken baby gate that was cracked and leaned up against the top of the stairs. The downstairs neighbors that would always seem uneasy when Neil would be alone with her and Billy. When she was little she thought Billy was just jealous that he didn't want his dad spending any alone time with her. Billy just didn't want Max to replace him, as a punching bag.
And why Billy seemed to relax when she went straight from the fight to his mother leaving. Something happened in between, something way worse than anything else. Max understood, but why didn't he just tell her, they could have faced this together.
"It's ok Billy. We don't have to talk about it." Max told him between tears she didn't know she was crying.
"What the fuck is going on? With Hawkins, with your little friend with superpowers?"
"We will tell you everything, but first you have to get out of the ICU."
"I don't want to get better." Billy said quietly.
"Don't talk like that. We're together now you got that? You're stuck with me and I'm stuck with you but I'm not going to let anything hurt you again. I'm going to protect you, like you've been protecting me. Billy I knew immediately that you weren't you when I saw you after the mind flayer got you. Yeah I was in denial at first, but do you want to know how I knew?"
"Because it called you my sister." Billy croaked.
"No. I have always been your sister. I could see it in your eyes. They weren't my brother's eyes, not entirely." Billy wrapped his arms around her as best as he could.
"You tell anyone I went soft on you-"
"You won't do anything, you love me." Max curled into him some.
They crowded into Billy's small room on one of the main floors.
"Hawkins. Bumfuck Hawkins Indiana is a hotspot for interdemntional fucking monsters and people with superpowers from a lab. And a bunch of kids have been fighting them off." Billy shook his head in disbelief. "So what do we do now?"
"I'm sorry 'we'?" Harrington asked.
"Nothing. We do nothing, the mind flayer is dead. We go back to normal and hope it stays that way." Max answered.
"Shit." Billy muttered.
Billy was still a dick most of the time, but not the same kind of dick he was before. Now that Max saw him a little clearer it became evident that he was trying before.
He had taught Max to drive. To ride a skateboard. Those were all things he had done in California. Neil was an asshole and her mom was always busy.
And though he had done those things in a roundabout dickish way he had done them without being asked without being told.
And those days that sent Max into panic, when Neil would come flying at Billy with fist and voices raised. Maybe Billy's slow steps back weren't cowarding, maybe they were leading Neil away. Leading him away from Max and her mom.
Now, Billy was very obviously intentionally doing things for her. Bonding with her.
A loud whistle would ring through Cherry Lane and Max would come running. At first Billy would have some excuse. 'Your running in the store and grabbing food.' 'I need you to get me a pack of Reds.' 'The new girl at the arcade is hot.' Then it became clear. He just wanted his little sister by his side.
Tumblr media
Trees, houses, everything whizzed by. Max grabbed a hold of Billy's arm and held him tightly.
"I'm scared." She whispered to him, burrowing her head into his arm.
"I'm scared." The ocean was roaring in his ears, he was sitting next to his mom staring at the crashing waves, "It looks hard."
"You can do hard things." She promised him, "Now, up and at 'em. You are so strong and I believe in you." Somewhere in the back of his mind he could hear yelling.
"Your alright sweetie just sit back please and buckle up." Susan jittered nervously. Max shook her head holding on tighter to Billy's arm. He turned his arm over in her grip and laid a hand on her head, pressing her into his upper arm more in a strange hug.
"It's going to be okay."
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Was muffled by his shoulder.
"We've still got Billy baby, he's not going anywhere." Susan promised Max.
"This one's got a pulse!" Max's heart stopped. Which one? A fire burned behind them, Starcourt Mall seconds from being reduced to ash, the pavement smelled like motor oil and mucky rain. The irony was suffocating, the last time she remembered this particular smell her and Billy were much younger in California. Racing to find Neil's truck in the parking lot of the carnival before Billy paid the price for Max insisting to play that stupid duck game over and over.
Billy sat on the ride home nursing a bruised wrist from how tightly Neil had yanked him into the truck. Max sat playing with her prize and Billy snatched it from her and tossed her new stuffed animal out the window.
He took his bike out the next morning and found it in a pile of mud, though he would never admit that he was the one who went and grabbed it off the side of the road.
"Mary mother of God." They were yanking on his bloody arm, pulling blonde curls out of the black bag.
"Someone grab me something with suction, anything, I need to clear his airway now!"
"Turn him over, turn him over!" Then that horrible retching that sounded like Billy was throwing his guts up but meant one thing, Billy was alive.
"He's breathing!!!"
Max sprinted across the parking lot as they pulled Billy from the body bag onto a stretcher.
"Pulse is dimming." The paramedic called out.
"Billy no!" Max had gasped, wrapping her arms around his, "Please don't go again." Max whimpered, "I need you."
"Pulse is stronger. Kid, keep talking." Max jumped in the ambulance with them and El followed.
"She's his sister too." Max lied.
Tumblr media
It all started with dinner. Billy had heard raised voices, he turned off his radio.
"We'll pick it up then!" One of the cabinets slammed. Billy came out of his room, and headed into the kitchen. "You got a problem, son?" Neil asked when he saw him.
"No sir." Billy started grabbing silverware and cups for the table. Max was kneeled down cleaning up a plate. Billy sat everything on the counter and kneeled down to help her.
"Oh no." Neil scoffed, "Get your ass up. We're teaching the little princess responsibility."
Everything after that was a bit of a blur. Max said something Neil considered smart. Neil grabbed her. Billy shoved him off without thinking and Neil pinned him to the wall with an arm to his throat.
Billy couldn't breathe, this was finally it. His old man finally snapped to the point where he was going to kill him.
Everything was fuzzy around the edges, Billy tried to find somewhere to look. He didn't want the last thing on earth that he saw to be Neil's anger or the look of terrified horror on Max's face. There was a weird noise and Billy fell to the floor gasping. Max was beside him holding him and he slung an arm over her shoulder.
He had to get his feet under him, had to get up, had to get Max behind him, block her from Neil so he couldn't hurt her next.
"Oh my God is he dead?!" Max was asking. Billy's eyes finally focused on what was going on around him.
Susan was holding the frying pan, Neil was on the ground knocked out.
"Get your things, quickly." Susan was telling Max. And then his little sister and stepmother were gone from the kitchen. Billy forced himself to his feet leaning heavily on the counter. It could have been an hour or five minutes Billy wasn't sure. Susan came rushing back in, pulling a coffee can down from its hiding place in the cabinet. She took a wad of cash from it, stuffing it into her bag.
"Billy, sweetie." She was touching his arm and he pulled away from her a bit harshly. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you." She mistook his anger, "Max is grabbing you some clothes and your stuff for your hair. I already put your moms seashells in the car. Is there anything else important to you that we can't replace?" Billy looked confused. "Oh. Oh! I'm so sorry! He's your father, I shouldn't have assumed you would want to leave with Max and I. It's just- well Billy I know I'm not your mother but I care about you and I just can't stand him putting his hands on you any longer. We just almost lost you and I-I-" Susan got teary eyed as she stumbled over her words.
"You're taking me with you?"
"Of course." Susan choked, "Your my son- stepson- but-" Billy hugged her tightly.
"Plus I have a car." Susan didn't. After Billy's mom's escape Neil ensured that Susan would never be able to get her own car.
Susan was already in the car, Billy was behind Max.
"What are you doing Shitbird?" He asked as she stalled at the door. She was breathing heavily and suddenly she turned rushing past him. Billy followed after her as she rushed back into the kitchen. "Woah woah woah!" He yelled as she yanked a large butcher knife out of the knife block. She gave him a disbelieving look as she held the damn thing next to her like Micheal Myers. She cut the phone cord, shoving the phone down into the garbage disposal for good measure.
"I'm not going to kill him!"
Billy internally sighed in relief, "You did try and take a bat to my balls, after your little boyfriend kicked them." He followed after her as she went to the living room, cutting the cord to that phone as well. Max snatched Neil's keys off the hook, dropping the knife. The horn on the Camaro blew.
"I'm coming!" Max shouted running out of the door, Billy came out behind her carrying his bag over his shoulder. Billy threw some more stuff in the trunk and opened the driver door for Max. She put Neil's keys in his hand.
"Put all that stupid baseball he made you play to use." Max told him before ducking into the backseat. Billy breathed deeply, tossing the keys up into the air once before chunking them as hard as he could to the treeline. Billy always had been a great pitcher.
Tumblr media
Billy pulled into the next gas station. Max was slumped on his arm funny and it couldn't be comfortable. Susan stirred immediately when the car stopped.
"You're okay." Billy promised. He turned in his seat to lay Max down in the back.
"How far have we gone?"
"Three hours, we just crossed into Michigan." He told her quietly. Susan rubbed Billy's forearm, for the first time she actually looked very sad.
"I need to make a call." She swallowed looking teary, "Billy I need you to take care of Max for me." Billy's hands tightened on the wheel.
"You can't abandon her."
"I'm not! But- he's going to come looking for me." She took a deep breath, "You know that and I know that. It doesn't matter if it's tonight or next week he's going to come looking for me. I can not put my kids in danger." She was right, he knew that deep down.
"Fine. Whatever helps you sleep at night. I've got Max, I'll take care of her."
"I knew you would."
Billy had smoked through his pack and bought another before the old Wagoneer and Mercedes pulled in. Billy watched as the Mercedes did a lap through the parking lot before idealing in the pullout. An older dark haired woman hopped out of the Wagoneer, pulling Susan into her arms.
"It's so good to see you again, San Diego feels like yesterday."
"Joanna." Susan sighed, hugging her back tightly. Billy sighed, reaching back to shake Max awake.
"Hmm?"
"You need to go talk to your mom."
"Why what's happening?!" She jumped into the front seat, looking out to where Susan was hugging Joanna.
"Max, listen. Whatever she tells you, act like it's fine, tell her you love her. Once you're back in the car and we are away you can scream, cry, kick. Whatever you need, but for now go tell Susan that everything is going to be ok." Max nodded solemnly and got out of the car. He watched, unable to do anything while Susan held Max tightly. He watched as his sister shrunk into herself and just nodded, she hugged her mom again tightly and the three women walked back to the Camaro. Susan put Max into the passenger side still saying a very tearful goodbye while Max told her that it was okay and everything was going to be ok. Joanna came to Billy's side of the car.
"Just follow my girl, y'all will be staying with her for a bit." She pointed to the Mercedes. Billy nodded and after Joanna pulled Susan away, he pulled in behind the black car.
"You ok?" Billy asked Max quietly as they pulled into the street. Max nodded.
"I'm fine." She unbuckled her seat belt. "Totally fine." Climbed into the back seat lying down. "Everything is great actually." Pulled one of the pillows over her face, "Amazing!" (Muffled) and then, she screamed and screamed holding the pillow tightly to her face. A while after the screaming stopped, Billy pulled the pillow away so she would smother herself. "I hate Neil."
"Me too." Billy agreed, "Who was that lady?"
"Joanna?"
"Yeah."
"She used to babysit me when I was younger, before you."
"Alright."
"Her and YN." They pulled in at a small yellow two story house.
"Whose YN?" Billy asked, just as the driver door to the Mercedes swung open.
"Her." Max nodded toward you as you stepped out of the car.
"Holy shit." Billy scoffed.

“What does it say here?” Sounded the voice of the teenage redhead in the shed. She pointed to one of the dialog bubbles in the comic.
Thirteen tilted his head in a vain attempt to read better. The comic was in his own hands and moving it wasn’t as helpful as he thought. “Mmm… final… v… victory?” He stutter. He felt he chest warm when he saw the look of pride in Max face while she nodded.
“Yeah. You’re getting better.” She said excitedly. A big smile was formed in the kids face.
It’s been two weeks since they met. And everything’s going good so far.
The day after Max let him stay, with the condition of being careful no to be seen, she went to check on him only to have heart attack when she didn’t find him.
The blankets she gave him were folded and there was no trace of him.
She spent the whole morning of school wondering where he could have gone. It’s not like she paid attention to the classes before.
And after an uncomfortable ride home with her stepbrother she went straight to the shed getting an insult of how weird she was behaving from the blond and disappointment from finding nothing.
She stayed on her room thinking the few things she knew about him while her brother worked out in the living room. She thought about the limited vocabulary of the kid and that she had to read the comics she showed him because he couldn’t.
There were no visible signs of physical abuse but she got a glimpse of a tattoo in his left wrist when he rubbed his eyes after yawning.
The kid is only ten, what kind of tattoo would a kid his age want?
He is dirty and his clothe doesn’t fit him, obviously not his. But still, none of it gives her a hint from where he comes from or how to find him.
She didn’t even know why she wanted to finde him so bad. Or more like, she pretended not to know.
She’s always thought of herself as independent, which was accurate for the most part, but didn’t mean she liked being alone.
Before moving to Hawkins, in California, she made her life outside of the awkward environment of her house. She spent most of her time with her two best friends and going to her biological fathers house. Even when her mother met Neil and his son, she did it.
But now, she is stuck in a place she doesn’t know with her awkwardly nervous mother, an asshole who controls the house and everyone in it and calls himself her father just to have an excuse to “educate” her and a stepbrother that gives cero shit about her.
The kid was like her hope for something better. His innocent soul hasn’t been taught how to be an though (asshole) to confront the live out there. He was a little piece of the remaining good things of the world.
Fortunately, before she could exit and give her stepbrother an excuse to leave the house she was startled out of her thoughts by a knock on her window.
There he was peeking over the edge of the window and lifting a hand with three bags of chips to share with her.
Since then it became a routine that they manage to hold for a week. While Max goes to school and avoids as much interaction with her current family as she could, thirteen sneaks out to explore more. He already knows most of the place like the back of his hands but he still finds interesting the things that people do, even tho he is to scared to get close.
Those are the moments too bitersweet to him. He loves watching others have fun and imagine himself enjoying with them, having a life where he didn’t have to keep hiding, but before he can get a step closer to the kids in the park the fear of returning to the lab and being punished for leaving in the first place stops him.
That’s why he always goes back to the shed. To a place where he knows he is not alone anymore. At least the fear of being found didn’t bother him for the first week, but at the beginning of the second something that neither he or Max could have thought happened.
It was a normal day for them until the girl came back from school and went to her room like usual. But her heart fell once she saw Billy walking out of the house with a grey tank top and a pair of shorts he only uses when he knows his going to get dirty. Which means he is going thinker with his car, which means, he needs his tolls that are in the shed.
She took a shortcut jumping through her window. She run to catch her stepbrother and walked as normal as posible beside him.
“What are you doing?” She asked, trying to act normal.
He threw her a a momentary look, easily realizing her act. “To mind my business.” He answers bluntly.
She put herself in front of him walking backwards, only making the situation even weirder to Billy. “Don’t you have a date? With the… that blonde girl. What was her name?” She tried to remember almost stumbling with a rock.
Billy rolled his eyes in exasperation. “I don’t know and I don’t care. That was yesterday. Now move.” He pushed her effortlessly to the side once they reached the shed.
Max almost face planted in the floor but that wasn’t her priority. She turned to Billy only to witness him stop in his place with the door open.
“What the fuck?” He mumbled.
Max rammed her body against the door and closed it staying between it and her stepbrother. “It’s not what it looks like.” She defended.
Billy rose a brown in incredulity. “Really? Because it looks like you’re keeping a stray in Neil’s shed.”
“He’s not a dog, he’s a kid.” She defended, actually offended. “A really scared kid.”
“And I don’t give a shit. You’ve been keeping him there in a shed that doesn’t belong to you.” Max knew that what he said was true, but she couldn’t let him to his own with the possibility of returning to an abusive home. “What could a kid of his age be scared of? A monster under his bed?” He shook his head. It was ridiculous. “He needs to go.” He said with finality.
Max pressed her back even harder against the door and shook her head.
Billy got closer to her, using his height to tower over her in an intimidating way. “Get him out before Neil finds out or I’ll do it.” He threatened in a gruff voice.
Max genuinely felt scared. She knew what he was capable of, but she bets that the kid is even more scared than she is right now. And she was right, the boy was shaking inside the shed, hugging to his chest one of the comics Max left for him. His favorite comics. One of x-men’s.
“No.” She said with all the confidence she could in front of her intimidating brother.
The blond grabbed her arm in a painfully strong grip and dragged her a few steps away from the shed before throwing her, ignoring her yelp when she fell on her side. “Then I’m gonna get rid of the scaredy cat myself.” He conclude walking with heavy steps towards the shed.
Max panicked. She let out something that she knew could affect him. “He’s scared of his father, okay?” She screamed.
She felt a small relief when Billy stopped in his actions with his hand in the door’s handle.
His hesitation brought some confidence to the girl. “He hurts him.” She explained in hopes of changing his mindset. “I’m not asking you to take care of him. Just don’t tell anyone. You won’t even notice he is here.” She pleaded a little calmer now but still seating in the floor. “You won’t even notice he is here.” She repeated in a soft voice.
Billy bit the inside of his cheek in thought. He doesn't know how long the kid’s been there but if it weren't for the fact that he personally went to the shed he wouldn't know of his existence.
Almost reluctantly, Billy opened the shed again. He stayed in his place but he took his time to actually take a look at the kid. Scared and dirty, the boy stayed in the very back of the wooden place, shaking. Those blue innocent eyes were looking at him, waiting for the worst.
For a second, a small flash, he saw himself in the boy. When he was recently abandoned by his mother and left with his abusive father. He moved slowly to one of the shelves close to the door to grab the box of tools, keeping an eye on the kid.
Once he was out he looked at the surprised redhead in the floor as he closed the door behind him.
He stepped in front of his sister with his always present frown in his face. “If Neil finds out I let you hide a kid in the shed I’m gonna drag you under the bus with me. Do you understand?” He concluded.
Max was stunned for a few seconds but nodded slowly.
Billy scoffed, proceeding with his plans on tinkering in his car but made a las comment. “And wash that filthy kid. His gonna become a charcoal by the weekend.”
Max blinked a few times. She sat there for a moment, processing what just happened until she heard the door creaked open and a pair of eyes accompanied by a dirty fur (at least that’s what it looks like) peeked out of the place. She gave him a toothed smile that soon became a laugh that turned into a cackle that had her almost rolling on the floor.
The boy came out of the shed smiling, visibly confused but smiling. If Max was happy that means good news.
And it did.
Now that she didn’t have to actually hide the boy it became easier to change places between her room and the shed, they go through her bedroom’s window though.
She did what Billy said. She gave him a bath. She took his clothes and left him in his underwear covering it with a towel and sat him in the bathtub. She was horrified when the water changed color almost instantly and she had to change it for more clean water.
She knew he got dirty through the week but not that much.
She was surprised once again when she gave him the bottle of her brother’s shampoo and he only looked at it in wonder.
The kid didn’t know how to use a shampoo, much less the conditioner. He now has hair long enough to go a little below his ears when wet but that’s new to him, he’s always had a buzz cut since he was a kid. He never needed anything more than soap for his whole body, like the rest of the kids in the lab.
Knowing the kid was never taught how to use a shampoo put another knot in Max’s heart. Through how much has the kid gone?
She end up teaching him how to use the shampoo and conditioner. He needed a little help to get some knots out of his hair but it was easy.
Surprise surprise. Under those old rags and all the dirt was a beautiful kid with light brown hair. It was formerly a way darker color.
Even Billy who was just on his way to his room did a doble take to the boy standing patiently in the hall. He scoffed and continued on his way. Who could have thought?
Meanwhile Max was practically buried in the main closet of the house, it was more like a storage room with all the unpacked boxes, looking for clothe that would fit him. More specifically, clothes her stepbrother used, but there was nothing. She already looked for in the unpacked boxes around the house and the closet was her last option.
She debated if she should ask Billy personally. It wasn’t the best of her ideas but it was the only one. The probability of Billy slamming the door in her face where high.
She sigh. It was her only option for now.
Reluctantly, she made her way to her stepbrothers bedroom where he was gathering clean clothes to take to the bathroom. His towel was already in his shoulder.
She knocked on the doorframe a little shy.
“What?” He grumbled without looking at her.
“Can you lend me some of your old clothes. The kid doesn’t have any.” She said in a small voice.
He huffed as he grabbed a blue tank top from his closet. “Why is that my problem? He should have thought about it before running away.” He said in a low voice with a hint of annoyance.
“Come on Billy. You can’t let him freeze to death in the autumn weather. Winter is already close.” She answered with a little bit of annoyance in her own voice.
Billy slammed the door of his closet shut and turned to Max. He already had what he needed. He pointed at her with his free hand. “You said he isn’t my problem and I wouldn’t even notice him. This doesn’t seem like it.” He had a point. “Give him some of your old clothes.” He recommended walking to the door. “You dress like a boy anyway.” He insult on his way out, bumping with Max’s shoulder on purpose.
Thirteen, still in the hallway, looked at Billy in curiosity when he walked by him, even when the teenage was obviously ignoring his presence.
Max huffed at him. Well she didn’t have that much expectations in him anyway.
She guided Thirteen back to her room and sat him down on her bed.
She looked for her own old clothes through the many unpacked boxes in her room, grumbling every time something fell out of the boxes for the lack of space needed.
It took a long time but finally, she found her clothes. she organized it into tree divisions. The too small for the 10 year old kid, the clothes that fits and the clothes that will fit. All of that, after selecting the ones that looked boyish.
By the end of it thirteen already had his hair sticking out in every direction, full of static. He put on and took off everything to measure.
While they were both doing their own things, Billy was back in his room. He discarded the dirty clothes in the laundry basket and dried his hair with harsh movements of the towel. Once satisfied he threw the towel to wherever the hell it flew, he just wanted to fall on his bed and blast some music, but he was stopped when he heard a commotion at the feet of his bed.
He huffed. The towel fell on top a stack of books placed on an unpacked box and caused everything to fall.
He grabbed the towel with annoyance only to freeze when he saw the box slightly opened. The item wasn’t hidden but wasn’t visible either from the door, that’s why Max didn’t see it when she came to ask. The light left a cloth visible inside the box. The box was filled with the clothes Max was looking for and some other things of his childhood.
Memories of the few good times. When his mother was still with him and he was happy.
He hasn’t been able to get rid of the things. To sentimental. But he doesn’t want to be reminded of the past and keeps everything hidden. Just like his feelings.
Agitated, Billy grabbed the box of things, slammed his closet’s door open, threw the box inside and slammed it back shut. He walked to his nightstand and grabbed the box of cigarettes. He lighted one up with hands trembling in bottled fury and disgust towards himself and the world.
The relief of breathing nicotine and filling his lungs with the smoke was almost instant. He held his breath for a few seconds, calming himself first then letting it out just like the bad feelings.
The past is in the past, he cannot be weak anymore. He doesn’t have that chance.
To drown every remaining of that bad taste in his mouth he blasted his noisy music so loud that he couldn’t hear his own thoughts anymore.
Thirteen, still in Max’s room frowned when the music reached his ears. Billy’s door was close and so was Max’s, yet, he could still hear the music very clear. He didn’t like how it sounds.
A little thing he hasn’t told Max yet is one of his rare capabilities. Everyone in the lab new it was a possibility to gain enhanced senses once some of the kids started showing signs of it. More specifically, hearing and smell.
Whatever they did to expand the limits of their minds also better enabled the senses limited by mental capacity.
9 of the 15 kids they had developed the enhanced senses along with telepathy and psychokinetic powers. Thirteen was one of them. He only got the hearing though.
But he never got to interact enough with them because he was separated from the rest of the kids when his father found out he was a late bloomer. He was left in isolation for many hours with the excuse that it was to help him concentrate. He was raised in the east side of the lab while the rest were held in the west.
But still, he ended up better than his father ever anticipated and now he has some resemblance of freedom.
Uncomfortable with the music rumbling in his head he rubbed his ears for a moment. The security alarms in the lab were still worse so it wasn’t that much of a problem.
“Here” cheered Max grabbing jeans, a pair of socks, a navy-blue t-shirt with long sleeves and a red hoodie that has less color than when it was new for the many times it’s been washed.
Happy to cover his chilling skinny body he quickly put on the clothes. Max helped him when he managed to get his head stuck in one of the long sleeves.
At last, when he was done, he had a big innocent smile in his face that was reflected in Max’s own. The clothes fitted perfectly.
“Looking good, uh?” she said rising and lowering her eyebrows consecutively. The smile in the boy’s face widened with joy. “Now you can blend in with the others if you need.” Thirteen nodded in agreement. “Wanna read a comic now?” She asked, getting another nod as an answer.
“Magneto?” asked the boy in hope.
Max laughed a little, already grabbing an x-men comic. She knows that the boy’s favorite character is Magneto. She doesn’t know why but she likes how he thinks outside of the box. Most of the kids like a hero, but Thirteen likes a villain, just like she likes monsters. In some way, they are similar.
That’s how the first two weeks of knowing the stepsiblings went. Enjoying a little bit of liberty and not lonely anymore.
But Halloween is close, and so are other things in the dark he thought he would never see again.
Fortunately, this time he won’t be alone.

Mama's Boy - Chapter 1
Simon "Ghost" Riley x Petra "Mama" Mayfield
Next Chapter
The buzzing of her phone made her groan. Green eyes opened to glare at the glowing red numbers on her alarm clock. 0200. She’d only just crawled into bed about twenty minutes ago.
A tired hand snatched the phone off her nightstand, hitting the answer call button and holding the phone to her ear.
“Mayfield..” she mumbled, still half asleep pulling herself up onto her elbow and trying to blink sleep away.
“Mama,”a gruff male voice with an accent answered. Petra sat up, awake in an instant hearing her callsign. “We need you. ASAP.”
It took a moment for the voice to register in her brain. Captain Price. Shit. It was never good news when he called. Petra’s feet hit the floor as she tucked the phone against her shoulder and searched for her uniform, pulling it on just as quickly.
“Big guy?” she asked, already knowing the answer. Price wouldn’t be calling her if it wasn’t.
“A-firm,” the captain said. “He’s already walking his stubborn ass back to his bunk.”
Of course he was.
“Two minutes Captain,” Petra said. She hung up after that, taking an old scrunchie to tie her dirty blonde curls back with, it wasn't regulation but she didn’t have time for that.
---
Exactly two minutes later, Petra is banging loudly on the door of the soldier she’d been woken up to deal with. It was a miracle no one else stepped into the hall to see what was going on, though she suspected the rest of the team already knew. She impatiently tapped her boot on the concrete floor for only a few seconds before opening the door.
“Lieutenant!” she barked. She saw him there, half leaned against his bed, removing his gear. A balaclava clad head turned to look at her, the skull plate that was typically worn over it still in his hand. Ghost was, well, large. He stood head and shoulders over Petra's head and she swore it was a miracle he fit through any door on base. He looked like shit even in the dark. Petra turned the light on, revealing just how bad it was.
Lieutenant Ghost, hunched over, was covered in blood, a gash in his side the source of it all. Petra’s hand flew to the zipper on the medical pack she’d carried with her, the other hand slamming his door shut behind her as she stomped inside.
“Sit.” she ordered, the far larger man quietly obeying, sitting on the bed with a grunt. The medic wasted no time making her way to him. She could feel his heavy gaze on her as she knelt at his side, watching her every move.
“M’fine,” he said quietly before being silenced by the small blonde digging through her pack.
“Shut the hell up,” she said. Petra was furious seeing such a serious wound that he’d apparently thought could go without treatment. She pressed a sterile cotton pad to the wound, applying pressure to stem the bleeding. Ghost clenched his jaw at the pain in his side. “Blade or bullet?”
“Shrapnel,” he said in that damned British accent, she could feel the scowl behind his mask as his eyes still bore into her. The medic’s only response was a sharp exhale through her nose. That accounted for the size at least.
She lifted the cotton pad, now stained dark red with his blood, the wound was long and broad, being about as long as her hand against his side. It didn’t matter how well she treated it, it would scar. Not that it made much difference on Ghost, he was already covered in more scars than even he could count. Thankfully though, the bleeding had slowed significantly. That was a relief.
She moved to her pack again, this time producing a clean cotton pad and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, she dampened the pad and listened to the hiss that escaped the lieutenant as she cleaned the gash. Petra quietly offered words of comfort, the way she often did with recruits that came to her with far less serious injuries on her last base. She didn’t look up to see the disapproving look in his dark eyes.
Once it was cleaned, Petra found the wound, despite how large it appeared, was shallow enough that stitches wouldn’t do it any good. She carefully bandaged it, being sure not to wrap it too tightly around Ghost's ribs.
“There,” she said, giving him one last look over. “That should do ya..”
“Thanks doc,” he said quietly. She could've sworn he sounded tired.
“You know I was finally getting some sleep when Price called,” she said, starting to put her supplies away. “A full week of round the clock work down at the clinic and the moment I finally curl up in bed, I have to come hunt you down because- for some reason! You thought you could just sleep this off??” Petra stood, adjusting the pack over her shoulder again and placing a hand on her hip. “You could've died, you know? Bled out and shit.”
Ghost was quiet, he almost always was, as Petra ranted at him. Telling him what an idiot he was for refusing medical attention. She reminded him of a small dog, barking up at the larger breeds simply for existing. Her uniform was disheveled, hastily put on he gathered, and her hair was only half in the bright pink scrunchie that attempted to hold it back. She still looked like the fiery medic he too often heard reaming out Gaz after the sergeant fell out of a helicopter and somehow survived for the second time since she arrived on base.
“You look tired Mama.”
Ghost's voice cut through her rambling, halting it. Petra stared at him, fire still in her eyes. She groaned, wiping a hand down her face.
“Just… make sure you get the bandage checked in the morning,” was all she said as she stalked out of the room, slamming the door as she left. She fished her phone from her pocket. 0245. If she was lucky she could get back to bed and get some sleep if she skipped a morning shower.
---
The next day Petra felt like her boots were filled with lead as she counted supplies in the clinic. She was at least slightly more out together than she'd been last night, her hair in a more reasonable bun and her uniform straight, though the bags under her eyes gave away her exhaustion. Supply counting was tedious and only made it harder to stay awake.
The medic found herself reminiscing about simpler days as she made notations of what would need to be ordered. Standing on a regular old base, in a regular old clinic with a full team of medics to work with as recruits and trained soldiers alike came and went with nothing more than a few scrapes and bruises. Days where she could find sleep easily and often. Nothing like the task force’s base. Here she was basically alone, caring for the team of five and the clinic with nothing but the faint ringing in her ears to keep her company. Petra made a mental note to petition Price for a second medic.
She didn't hear the heavy boot falls as they came up behind her and a gloved hand placed a Styrofoam cup of coffee on the counter in front of her. Petra looked up, finding a familiar pair of deep brown eyes staring back at her from behind a balaclava decorated with a skull.
“You still look tired,” Ghost grumbled. He didn't look so great himself, though he hid it far better than Petra did. In place of his black combat gear, he wore an equally dark hoodie and jeans. Must be nice to have days off to dress casually.
Petra chewed the inside of her cheek, biting back the bitter thought. She glanced down at the coffee he delivered. Black, probably no sugar. A rare kindness.
“Thanks,” she mumbled, placing the clipboard she'd been holding down next to it. “Let's look at that bandage.”
She waved him over to a chair and Ghost sat quietly, lifting the hoodie so Petra could inspect her work from the previous night. The bandaging looked hastily done and sloppy, but no worse than when she’d had to tend wounds in the middle of a gunfight. She chewed the inside of her cheek as she removed the layers of gauze and medical tape. At the very least, she'd properly cleaned it. The gash still looked fresh but it was clean and it didn't bleed much after she bandaged it.
“We'll need to keep redressing it over the next few days,” she noted to herself aloud. Petra stood and turned to her cabinets of supplies. “How's the pain?”
“Can hardly feel it,” Ghost replied, this time not looking in her direction. She was grateful for that this time.
When she was finished redressing the wound, he had turned to look at her again, quickly looking away when she noticed. The medic turned, disposing of her gloves in a bin nearby.
“I don’t need to offer you a lollipop like I do for Roach, do I?”
Petra smirked, almost certain that had earned her a chuckle from the usually serious Ghost, but the only hint she received was the way his eyes crinkled behind the balaclava.
“I’m starting to understand where you got your name from,” He rumbled, the tiniest hint of humor in his voice. He stood up to his full height, stepping just a little closer to her. She barely came up to his shoulder. “You really worry about us.”
“Someone’s got to Ghost,” Petra replied, her tone softening. She had to shuffle half a step back to look up at him and not just stare at his broad chest. “Besides, what kind of medic would I be if I didn’t care for my soldiers?”

In the passenger seat of an old, beat-up car, Calum Miller drummed his fingers against his chin in thought. He was unable to let anything go or be; his mind was a tangled web of suspicion that his hometown wasn’t what everyone believed, and he was almost desperate to prove it.
“You know, maybe the whole Pennhurst idea wasn’t too far-fetched. It’s possible Danielle and even Will ended up there somehow,” he thought aloud. The whole story surrounding Danielle Torres drove him mad. No printed article or half-assed story the long-lost teen uttered convinced Calum that there wasn’t more to the story. He had done his research and in nearly every kidnapping case, it was unlikely the victim survived a week, let alone ten years. Someone- Danielle, her family, the Hawkins P.D., and probably others- was coving something up. They didn’t want the public to know something and Calum wanted to know what. He also wanted to know- no, he needed to know- if it had anything to do with his dad.
“Jesus Christ,” Tamera huffed.
“Are you really still upset about the tutoring thing? I know we blew it, but we can think of something else-”
A dry, humorless laugh sounded from Tamera, and her eyes remained glued to the road. “No, you idiot. I’m not mad you blew the tutoring idea. I didn’t even want to do that! I’m mad that you basically accosted Danielle. She hasn’t come around the library in days,” she said. “I liked talking to her. She’s nice and sweet, and you scared her off! Now I’m gonna be lucky if she ever talks to me again.”
Calum frowned. He didn’t understand why she didn’t see how weird things were with Danielle’s story. Sure, she seemed nice and all, he wasn’t doubting that, but something wasn’t right about her or how she found her way back to Hawkins.
“Come on, Mara-”
She cut him off with a quick glare. “No. Just let it go, please.”
Once again, the friends found themselves trapped in the same loop of a conversation they’d been having for weeks. Calum had thrown almost all of his focus into scraping together clues that would lead him to his dad, and Tamera had helped him where she could. But with the dead ends they kept meeting and then Calum’s questioning of Danielle, Tamera was getting visibly annoyed with him.
Maybe he was being annoying about it, but he needed to find his dad and fix things. He needed his mom to stop drinking herself into a coma each night because of her husband’s absence. The only thing he had was that Danielle Tores returned the same week his dad and Will Byers went missing. Will returned but his dad didn’t.
With a sigh, Calum ran a hand through his blond hair and pressed the issue further. “I told you, Mara, I can’t let this go. My dad is out there somewhere, and I have to find him.”
She shook her head but didn’t ignore him; she wanted to convince him his efforts were misplaced and useless, but it wouldn’t work. Calum was too stubborn for anyone to convince him he was wrong. “There is nothing but that week connecting Danielle or Will or anyone to your dad. You have nothing besides those insane theories with no proof. You’re trying to turn nothing into something.” She paused and her anger melted into something of guilt before she continued, “Your dad is gone. He left, Cal. That’s all there is to it.”
Her words stung like a slap to the face, but he tried not to let them get under his skin. Tamera sounded like his mom. The woman had shut down every possibility of her husband being taken or vanishing. She insisted he left her, but her behavior told a different story. There were problems between his parents, mostly because his dad spent a lot of time away at work, but they loved each other. That could explain her unraveling in his absence, but something about the way she acted was wrong. She didn’t seem sad or heartbroken; she was relieved and enraged in the most confusing of ways. There was something he was missing; his parents were telling him something.
His mom didn’t make a livable wage as a hairdresser in downtown Hawkins. The job was more of a side hobby that she used to make some extra cash. It was Calum’s dad who was the breadwinner of the family. He didn’t know what his dad did, but it was some government number-crunching job that he never talked much about out of fear he’d bored his son to death. All Calum knew was that he brought in more than enough money to support them, but when he disappeared, Calum worried he and his mom would sink without the income. He picked up extra shifts at the arcade and got a second job at the movie theater in hopes of making ends meet.
Then, one night when he returned home late from work, he saw his mom dressed in the same clothes as the day before, not having been to work. Calum mustered up enough courage to ask her how they were going to support themselves without Dad’s money. She shrugged him off and told him not to worry about it and that it was “all taken care of.” That only made him more confused. How was it taken care of? Who were they getting the money from?
“My dad wasn’t a bad guy,” Calum said, keeping his tone level even though he was screaming on the inside. “There was no reason for him to leave like that. He didn’t take anything, and he didn’t say goodbye. There was nothing, he just vanished.”
If his dad was going to leave, he would have said something to Calum, that much he believed.
There was more that occurred that week that only heightened his suspicion that something odd was going on. “You know, that night he didn’t come home there were power outages all over town. Mr. Robinson said it had something to do with that power company in the woods, the one with the military out front.”
Tamera rolled her eyes. “Oh wow. The Department of Energy had trouble with the power in November. That obviously means aliens came down and abducted by aliens.”
“I’m being serious!” Calum snapped. Power outages had occurred more than a week than they had all year, according to the Hawkins Post. He knew it was a stretch, trying to connect a series of weird power outages to his dad’s disappearance, but he felt in his gut that there was something weird going on.
“Don’t you think it's a little strange that a bunch of vans from the Department of Energy were at Nancy Wheeler’s house?”
“What?” Tamera asked.
He explained to her what he saw. The Department of Energy was out and about that whole week; Calum recalled seeing their vans around town, but not once did he see anyone working on the powerlines. He was no electrician, but he knew that the Department of Energy vans never came around the summer prior when a wicked storm knocked the power out for three days in the dead of July. Men were out working on lines from dawn to dusk trying to get the power back. What was different that time? His curiosity and suspicion peaked when he saw a line of those vans outside Nancy Wheeler’s home.
Calum had cut through the neighborhood on his walk home from work. He needed to clear his head in the wake of his dad disappearing. When he reached the top of a hill that overlooked the other half of the neighborhood, he saw the collection of vans at the Wheeler’s home and the series of men and women, dressed in suits, carrying boxes out of the home. It made no sense to him. Who were those people and why were they at the Wheelers? But then he mulled it over and little connections were made. Nancy Wheeler was best friends with Barbara Holland who had also gone missing and never returned during that week. Her little brother was best friends with Will Byers. And her boyfriend, Steve Harrington was supposedly childhood best friends with Danielle Torres. It seemed to perfect to a coincidence.
Tamera a quiet for a long moment before she said, “That is… weird.” It was more than that, but he was happy with her not telling him to give up his pursuits.
“That’s not all, either. I skipped school two days ago because I didn’t want to play basketball in gym-”
“Which is ridiculous, by the way,” Tamera said. “But continue.”
“I ran to the store and when I was talking home, I saw Nancy and Jonathan Byers together. They came out of Radio Shack with a bag full of stuff.” The pair was odd, but Calum had seen them together more since the start of the school year. “I couldn’t get close enough to hear most of their conversation, but I swear I heard them mention Barbra Holland.”
Tamera looked unconvinced. “Barb and Nancy were friends. I’m sure she talks about Barb.”
“I guess, but did you know Nancy and Steve eat dinner with the Holland once a month? I bet they also think Barb’s still somewhere out there just like her parents do. The Hollands are selling their house to pay for a private investigator.”
“How do you know all of this?”
Calum’s mother was still on the fritz, but she had resumed working at the salon, just not as frequently as she had before his dad vanished. Calum helped around the place when he caught a break from work. If there was one place someone could get any information they wanted, it was the hair salon. The mothers, aunts, daughters, and sisters of Hawkins liked to talk about everyone and everything.
“I have my sources,” Calum said, smoothly. “And those sources confirmed that they saw the private investigator the Hollands hired talking to Danielle more than once. If all of this shit isn’t connected, how do you explain that?”
“I don’t know.” She paused before glancing at him through slightly more sympathetic eyes. “Just don’t jump the gun on this, okay? I agree that all of that stuff is weird, but there’s still no proof it’s connected to your dad.” But it had to, Calum thought.
He wanted to make Tamera understand, somehow, but before he could get another word out, a car came barreling down the street toward them.
“Shit!” Tamera yelled as she jerked the wheel to the side and narrowly avoided the speeding car. Bright headlights flooded Calum’s vision and he let out a matching scream alongside Tamera. Their car veered slightly off the side of the road, the right wheels in the grass, as the other car passed, they continued racing down the road.
Calum clutched his chest, feeling like he just suffered a mini-heart attack. “Jesus Christ! Who the hell was that?” he asked.
Looking in the rearview mirror, Tamera narrowed her eyes under her large, wire-framed glasses. “I think that was the new kid’s car.”
“What an asshole.”

Steve was dead, he had to be. Dead, but in a lot of pain, which didn’t make a lot of sense but even thinking was too painful. Every one of his muscles ached and his head felt too heavy for his body. His eyes were still closed when he tried to move, but it was as if he was crammed into a small space that wouldn’t allow his limbs to stretch. With a groan, he forced his eyes open despite the pounding in his head.
The world was a blur in front of him. He tried to rub his eyes and clear his vision, but someone grabbed his wrist. “No, don’t touch it.” Dustin’s voice filled his ears as the kid’s face came more into focus. “Hey buddy, it’s okay. You put up a good fight. He kicked your ass, but you put up a good fight.”
Oh, God. That was the only thought that flowed through Steve’s mind as the events of the night rushed back to him. The feeling of glass shattering over his head, the screams from the kids, and the taste of blood in his mouth all came back to him.
From right beside Steve, another familiar voice sounded. “Please slow down,” Sunshine groaned.
“Don’t throw up in here,” Mike replied, his head popping up on the other side of Dustin.
“Okay, you’re gonna keep straight for half a mile, then make a left on Mount. Sinai,” Lucas instructed from somewhere in front of Steve.
Steve had no idea where he was. All of the voices pounded against his skull and there was a weird feeling like he was moving. The last thing he remembered was blacking out in the Byers living room, but he was sure he wasn’t there anymore. Why did he feel like he was moving?
He tried to sit up, but he was in an uncomfortable and awkward position. There were too many people too close to him. All he could do was look forward and focus on figuring out what was going on. Then, it dawned on him that in front of him was the front seat of a car and he was indeed moving. Not only that but the car was being driven by a redhead who sat way too close to the steering wheel.
“What’s going on?” Steve started to panic.
“Relax,” Dustin said, in a lame attempt to ease Steve’s worry. “She’s driven before.”
Mike scoffed. “Yeah, in a parking lot.”
“That counts,” said Lucas.
On the furthest side of the backseat, pressed up against the door with his hands shoved in his pockets and his hoodie pulled up over his head, Luke shook his head. “No, it definitely does not.”
Ignoring them, Dustin looked down at Steve with an expression that looked slightly guilty. “They were going to leave you behind, but I promised that you’d be cool, okay?”
It certainly was not okay; Steve was in a car being driven by a child. “What is happening?” Steve’s words came out a little slurred. He tried to sit up again as he repeated, “No, no, no.” But a small yelp sounded from his other side as his elbow hit something that was not the door.
“Ow! Steve, stop moving.” Turning his head, Steve noticed that Sunshine was wedged between the door and him. His elbow was jammed into his ribs and her arm was wrapped around his shoulder, holding an ice pack to his cheek that he hadn’t even noticed until that moment. The side of his face felt numb but the panic inside of his was red hot as he peered past Sunshine and out the window to see Hawkins fly by.
“No! Stop the car! Slow down!” he yelled.
“I told you he’d freak out,” Mike huffed.
From the driver’s seat, Max yelled, “Everybody, shut up! I’m trying to focus!”
“Oh, wait, that’s Mount. Siani,” Lucas said, looking between the map in his hands and the road. Max shot him a confused look before he frantically pointed to the quickly approaching turn. “Make a left! Make a left, now!”
Max muttered a string of curse words and yanked the steering wheel as hard as she could to make a sharp left turn. Everyone in the car screamed as a mailbox bounced off the hood of the car and flew over them before landing in the dust the car kicked up from its veer off the road.
The rest of the trip was a blur. Steve was squished in the backseat and his ears rang from his blow to the head the yelling that filled the car. Somewhere along the way, they nearly collided with another car that was unlucky enough to be on the road at the same time as them and Max nearly drove them all into a ditch.
Steve squeezed his eyes closed and held onto Sunshine’s arm for dear life as he silently prayed for their trip to be over. It felt like an eternity later, but eventually, Max pulled into an empty field and slammed down on the break. The car lurched forward to a sudden stop, and as everyone fell back against their seat, a collective sigh of relief rang out.
“Incredible,” Mike said, breaking the silence with a look of bewilderment and awe in his eyes.
Max pulled the keys from the ignition and tossed a look to the backseat. “I told you. Zoomer.”
Steve didn’t know what the hell she was talking about, and he didn’t care. He needed out of the car before he hurled.
Everyone was on the same page and made quick work of getting out. Sunshine pushed open the door and nearly tumbled out of the car before she leaned heavily against the side of it.
Steve rubbed his throbbing temples, but his effort to collect himself was cut short as the kids all started pulling supplies out of the trunk and placed them near a gaping hole in the ground.
“Guys,” he said, trying to get their attention. “What do you think you’re doing?” His words were still a little slurred and he had to hold onto the car door to keep himself upright.
“Steve,” Sunshine sighed, but Steve couldn’t stop his anger from bubbling up at the kids as they continued to move and ignore him.
“What are you, deaf? Hello! We’re not going down there! I made myself clear!”
A hand grabbed his shoulder and forced his attention. Sunshine peered up at him. He couldn’t see much in the darkness of the field, but it didn’t make much to notice the tiredness that adorned her features. Her brows were furrowed and there was blood smeared against her skin; Steve wondered how they kept finding themselves in those kinds of situations, blooded and bruised and exhausted.
“I thought we were on the same page?” he said, exasperatedly tossing his hands up in the air, causing her to lose her hold on his coat and step backward. “This is insane and dangerous!” He didn’t intend for his voice to come out as loud as it did, and it was more pointed at the kids than Sunshine, but she still flinched. A wave of guilt instantly ran through him. He closed his eyes once more and willed the world to stop spinning so fast.
“Steve, you’re upset, I get it,” Dustin said, approaching the two teens. Steve rubbed his eyes once more and settled his gaze on the kid who held Steve’s backpack and bat. Dustin wore a pair of swimming goggles and a bandana tied around his neck; he looked ridiculous. “The bottom line is, a party member requires assistance and it’s duty to provide that assistance.”
Steve hated how loyal the kids were to each other; he’d never seen a group of friends so utterly devoted to one another, and if they weren’t standing at the edge of a hole that led into another nightmare or if Steve hadn’t just gotten the shit beat out of him, he’d probably think it was sweet.
“Now,” Dustin continued, holding out Steve’s backpack toward him. “I know you guys promised you’d keep us safe. So, keep us safe down there.”
Steve turned and looked at Sunshine, who was already looking at him. She brushed her frizzy hair behind her ears and wiped the dried blood from under her nose. “They’re going to do this with or without us.” Steve knew she was right, and he knew Hopper and Joyce were going to kill them.
“Fine,” he said and grabbed his backpack. “Let’s go.”

Take out Night
Tumblr media
Billy Hargrove x Fem oc Hello! Just before we begin this is a fic that will introduce another Oc that I have created. A Billy x Oc to be more precise. I have seen so many other creators, some whom I am mutuals with, make amazing oc. And I wanted to jump on the train with it. Plus I really want Billy to have a weird gf! So I have made a character for Billy hargrove and I hope you like her.
Tumblr media
It was all strange when the two first got together. If you mean the Cali boy going after probably the weirdest hot girl in town then you'd be correct. Because that is what happened when Billy Hargrove asked out, and is still going out with, Phoebe Brown.
Yep, Hawkin's local weirdo. Has been seen walking bare foot within the woods. Constantly seeming like she has consumed an intense amount of drugs even though she doesn't even drink or smoke. Claiming it ruins the soul of the body. Her dark brown hair always done up in a new style. Along with her clothes matching her presence, comfortable.
It was a month long gossip train as to why Billy would ask out such a peculiar girl. Many of Billy's, so called, friends said it was because he lost a bet or was looking for something easy. But what the masses do not know it took Billy a whole month before Phoebe even said yes to a date. Billy claimed he has never liked Hawkin's heifers, as much as Phoebe has told him to stop calling them that, he wanted something he thought would bring him excitement. So when he laid eyes on Phoebe Brown, he knew it was her.
Well to get that out of the way with all the sentimental shit that we will get into later. Lets focus on where our couple is at presently. It is the middle of December for Hawkins with a blissful, not to Billy, cold outside. And in front of a little chinese food restaurant sat a charged blue camaro where our couple sits. It is just another of their many at home date nights tonight. Let's see where the night will take them.
“Do you have to do this every time?” Billy asked his girlfriend. Who at the moment has her nose deep within a menu of said Chinese restaurant.
“Yes, what if I wanna try something new?” Phoebe said back to him, still with her face in the pamphlet of the menu.
“Babe there is no doubt in my mind that you have not eaten the whole menu since we have discovered this restaurant.” Billy reasoned with her. “Can we please order the food so we can go back to your house”
Phoebe faced him with a smile gracing her face. “You know, for such a big strong guy, you can be very soft and cute.” The statement flusters Billy, she knows this. But he will always keep his tough guy act up till they get home. So in response to his girlfriend's statement, he turned his head away from her. Which did not help because she could see his ears turning red which meant he was blushing. Phoebe just giggled at him, “Get out of the damn car.” Was all he said to her, but not with any mean intent behind it. So that is what you did. You both got out of the car to make your way in to order your dinner for the night.
“Hey Billy, Hey Phoebe” The cashier greeted, “What can I get ya?”
“We’ll get the spicy chicken combo and spring rolls to go with it.” Billy answered to the cashier.
“We will also take the Lo mien and crab rangoons.” Phoebe added on with confidence.
“Um, who paid?” Billy sassed to her.
“Um, who’s job is it to pay?” She simply sassed back. “I also paid for your gas, be a good boyfriend and pay for your girlfriend's dinner.” Billy just rolled his eyes to her.
“Alright coming right up.” That was all that needed to be said for the two to take their seats in front of the window to wait on their food.
“Hey, can I ask you a question?” Phoebe asked.
“Okay, hit me.” Billy said thinking it was gonna be a challenge.
“Why did you ask me out?” She asked simply.
Billy was silent for a minute. “This isn’t a trap is it? Last time this happened my tire got slashed.” Billy panicked.
“No it’s not… I just- I just think there is someone more suited for you than me.” Phoebe admitted.
“What like some cow on the cheer team?” Billy said very aggressively.
“Billy- I’m serious.”
“The reason I asked you out was because you were different from every other girl I have ever dated.” Billy told her, looking into her honey colored eyes.
“But-”
“I don’t wanna hear it.” He stopped her. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, and if I had to go another month of chasing you around to simply look in my direction then I will. I know I’m not the best guy, but you have made me realize that I will do whatever it takes for us to stay together.” Billy’s eyes softened as he looked at her. Phoebe's once tired looking eyes became wide while staring at Billy as he spoke. No guy has ever said something like that to her. Yeah, she knows she’s weirded Billy out before but he still stayed with her.
“Billy” She spoke softly, a smile making its way onto her face. He smiled back at her, taking her hand into his on the table.
“Order 37!” Was shouted out, to which brought the couple out of their trance.
Once the food was picked up. The couple made their way to the camaro to go home. The drive was silent, it was warm and comfortable. Just the quiet tone of one of Billy’s rock tapes playing from the window. As Phoebe was looking out the window to the dark outside of the night. She saw the glimmer of snow, she gasped as her eyes lit up. Even though it had snowed for the past few weeks, with every new snowfall Phoebe got excited. She loved the cold weather unlike her boyfriend. Billy heard her small gasp from beside him; he made a small glance over to her to see she was staring out the window. He just smiled at her expression, he couldn’t have asked for anyone better. The couple usually didn’t express too much emotion in front of others, not too heavy on pda other than a quickie in the janitor's closet. But the nights such as these were Billy could get away from his house to go home with her. To spend the night cuddling and watching trash movies they can make fun of. It was pure bliss for Billy, He loved it  He loved her.
The car came to a stop in Phoebe’s driveway. With her parents out of the house for the next few days that meant more time with Billy, and being able to eat in the living room. The food was set out on the coffee table, blankets were prepped, movies prepped to be watched, and Billy’s side ready for Phoebe to cuddle into. The chosen pick from the Family Video  tonight were American Ninja, obviously Billy, and Smooth Talk, clearly picked out by Phoebe, the two had very distinct tastes. The two watched and ate with glee for being in the other mere presence. In the middle of one of the movies Billy pauses it out of nowhere.
“Heey?” Phoebe said in confusion to his action.
Billy turned to her, now her side is cold. “Why did you ask me that question at the restaurant tonight?” Billy was curious. He wanted to make sure no one said anything to her and so she wasn’t in her head.
“I just- I just started thinking about the types of girls you went after before you got with me.” She said, “And I felt like I was a downgrade.” Hearing this broke his heart. “ I’m noy like Tammy, Tina, or Nancy… It's stupid but I can’t help but feel insecure sometimes. You were told about me from people that judged me and still chose me after everything. I just don’t get it sometimes.”
“Like I said before, you are unlike any girl I have ever been with, and I love it. I love you.” Billy said.
“You said the L word.” Phoebe giggled at him. Billy’s smile broke out after you said that.
“What are you gonna punish me?” He teased. In response Phoebe places her soft lips onto Hargroves. It felt like a puzzle being completed when they kissed. Phoebe became more forward and started to slowly push Billy back until he was on his back while she was sitting on him still kissing on her couch. The kiss slowed and the two started to pull away. Looking at one another for a moment. Until a sly smirk appeared on Billy’s face.
“I should say the L word more often if that’s my punishment.” He flirted. Phoebe just laughed at him then pulled him up right to continue where they left off. In the movie obviously. Billy played the movie and Phoebe snuggled back into his side.
“Just so you know.” Phoebe started. “I love you too.” Billy smiled and kissed the top of her head. The night was perfect, as always.

I hope you enjoy reading as much as I have writing. 💕
Read on Ao3 ❤️‍🔥 Chapter 2 📖 Master List 🌈
💌CHAPTER ONE: Move-In Day💌
Hawkins, Indiana. You’d never heard of it. To make matters more nerve wracking, you, your mom, and your little sister, Max, were moving to the middle of nowhere to shack up with her new husband and his son. You had met Neil Hargrove a few times when he came to visit from California, and he seemed nice enough. That’s the keyword – seemed. There was something intense about him that made you uneasy, and Max agreed that even though your mom seemed to be head over heels for the mustached, steam pressed, ordinary tryhard of a man, the two of you would keep a calculated distance from him pending further review.
The car ride was excruciatingly long, and you and Max each had your own walkman to keep you company, trading tapes every so often and sharing whatever snacks you could snag at the last gas station you happened upon. Your mom didn’t seem to realize the two of you were immersed in your high-volume music as you watched her lips move, undoubtedly chattering away about all of the fun features of the new town you were doomed to spend the impending school year in. Max rolled her eyes and shifted in her seat, her gaze drifting out the window and eventually coming to a close for yet another nap after receiving the report from your mom of “Only two more hours until we’re there!”
Deciding the only thing more painful than dreading the uncertainty of where you were headed was actually hearing confirmations of the bleak outlook to be endured, you decided to follow Max’s lead, eyes closing, letting the sounds of Alice Cooper lull you into the last nap you would take on your way to your new home in Hawkins.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“And these are your new sisters,” Neil explained with no trace of enthusiasm to his son in the driveway of your new home. “Billy, don’t be rude. Shake hands,” he instructed sternly.
Billy held out his right hand for you to take, his jaw clenched, expression unchanging as he let out a flat, “Welcome home.” His handshake was firm, and he didn’t make eye contact with you or Max as he stood before you.
“Thanks,” you replied, testing a small smile. Again, his expression didn’t soften.
“Why don’t you go help Susan with some of the boxes,” Neil muttered to Billy, the stern coldness in his eyes revealing that this was more of a command than a suggestion.
“Yes, sir,” Billy responded, already stepping down the driveway toward your mom’s car.
Once Billy was out of earshot, Neil turned to you and your sister and put on his best impression of a smile. “I hope the drive wasn’t too long for you girls,” he offered.
“It was okay,” you answered him, attempting to mirror the almost smile. The three of you basked in the awkwardness before Max piped up with a question.
“Will we be sharing a room?” She already knew the answer because your mom wouldn’t shut up about how excited the two of you should be to get your own bedrooms for the first time in your lives.
“Not at all,” Neil answered almost cheerfully. “Why don’t I show you two around, and you can get settled while we bring in your things?” Neil held out an arm, gesturing toward the front door of your new home, and you and Max trudged forward with your backpacks and snacks in tow.
The house wasn’t large, but it was more than you were used to, coming from the two bedroom, one bathroom townhome you had shared with your mother and sister for the last six years. Four bedrooms, – one for you, Max, Billy, and your mom and Neil – two bathrooms, a fireplace, and a separate kitchen, living room, and dining area. You even had your own yard complete with a tire swing, and you knew that would be a big bonus for Max.
“I hope you won’t mind sharing a bathroom with Billy,” Neil sighed almost apologetically. “He keeps things clean, so you won’t have to worry about that. But if you have any trouble at all with him, you just let me know.” Neil’s eyes were icy and cold as he spoke, his teeth gritting together at the end of his sentence. You were a bit taken aback at how he talked about his own son.
“What…kind of trouble?” His expression softened immediately, and he tried again at his smile.
“Well, you know, boys will be boys. He’s a good kid, but sometimes his attitude needs some…adjusting,” he explained.  “I’ll be outside helping your mother. If you need anything, don’t be shy.” Neil rapped a couple of times on the doorframe and exited your new room. You felt all tension dissipate the moment he was gone, and you took the time to glance around your new space. You had enough room for all of your posters. A queen size bed rested in one corner with shelves above it, a full size closet at the end of the bed, and a window with a desk underneath it on the wall opposite the sleeping corner - perfect for studying after school. You could get used to this.
You were pulled from your thoughts with the muffled clatter of a box being set on the wooden floor beside your bed. Turning around, your eyes met his for the first time. You couldn’t help but notice he looked almost…scared?
“Sorry. I’ll be more careful with the next one.” Billy’s hands turned to fists at his sides, thumbs fidgeting over his knuckles, his jaw clenching at the close of his words. His appearance was unlike any guy you’d ever seen in person before.
He looked like something out of the cover art of one of your mom’s romance novels she always had tucked away in a spot she thought you and your sister wouldn’t think to look. His blonde, shoulder length curls were carefully coiffed into one of those trendy mullet styles, plush pink lips outlined a perfectly white smile, his skin still golden from the California sun, and his eyes sparkled cerulean like the surface of the ocean with a depth you couldn’t quite reach. You could tell he was stacked and muscular through his clothes, and his jawline was sharp enough to cut glass. Still, there was something about him that seemed on edge.
“Don’t worry about it,” you reassured. “I don’t think there’s anything breakable in there.” He nodded in acknowledgement and turned to exit your room. “So,” you called after him, “what’s the high school like?” You just wanted him to know you were approachable and that you had no intention of making his life Hell, especially since you were all forced to exist in the same house from now on.
“Probably worse than you’re imagining,” Billy scoffed, turning slightly back towards you. When he noticed your nerves amping up at his comment, he sighed. “It’s not that bad. Small, easy to find your way around, and everyone is…nice enough, I guess.”
“Oh, that’s good. I’ve never gone to a new school before, so I’m probably just overthinking it,” you admitted, finally slipping your backpack off and letting it plop down on the bed. Billy turned to fully face you again, his hands in his pockets, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Don’t worry about it. It’ll be fine. Plus, you’ll know at least one person. And if anyone tries to give you shit, tell them they can answer to me.” You weren’t sure what that meant, but it did make you feel a bit more confident about your upcoming first day at Hawkins High.
“Uh, okay. Well, thanks for that.” You breathed out a small laugh, and Billy’s smirk bloomed into a smile.
“Don’t mention it,” he drawled before giving you a wink and disappearing back into the hallway to fetch another load of boxes. You didn’t have time to process the fact that you’re pretty sure your new step brother just winked at you before Max poked her head around the corner of your doorframe.
“Hey,” she whispered, catching your attention. “What did he want?” She looked back toward the hallway where Billy had just retreated, and you motioned for her to come in.
“He was just bringing some stuff in, so I asked him about the school.” Max was invested now, also having expressed her worry of starting in a new class already a month into the school year.
“What did he say?”
“Mixed review, really,” you answered, both of your expressions changing to that of confusion.
“Okay…well, do you know what to expect at all?”
“Not really. But he did say if anyone messed with me to tell them they could answer to him.” Max’s eyes widened.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She sat down on your bed, shuffling the toes of her shoes on the floor below.
“No idea,” you answered, meeting her gaze.
“Great.” Max sighed and stood up once more. “I guess I’ll start unpacking my new room.” She fluttered her eyelashes, hands waving in mock excitement. You laughed, knowing she was doing her best sarcastic impression of your mom gushing about your new home. You both rolled your eyes before she giggled and made her way back down the hallway to her own space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your first dinner was awkward, to say the least. Neil had ordered a pizza for everyone since your bandwagon arrived close to mid afternoon, and your mom didn’t have time to cook a full meal even though she insisted she didn’t mind. You rushed to the door to help Billy bring in the boxes from the delivery boy who he happened to know from school.
“Troy, this is my …” he hesitated, breaking eye contact with the boy on the doorstep and looking down at the ground with a sigh, “new sister, Y/N.” You smiled tentatively, and offered a half wave, taking a couple of boxes off the top of the stack from Troy.
“Troy Holstad. Nice to meet you,” he obliged before giving Billy a perplexed look. Billy nodded once curtly and took the remainder of the boxes from Troy before waving him off with a “see you at school,” and closing the door. He nudged your arm to get your attention and spoke softly.
“There you go. Now you know two people,” he reasoned, beaming at you before shuffling back toward the dining room and adjusting his expression back to that of a sullen teenager. Billy carefully set the boxes down in the middle of the dining table, and you did the same. Everyone thumbed through the different boxtops to find the flavors they wanted, your mom and Neil opting for supreme while Max grabbed two slices of pepperoni, and you and Billy each took a slice of Hawaiian.
“So, Y/N, your mother tells me this is the start of your senior year,” Neil declared, his voice resonating in the silence of the dining room.
“Yeah, it is,” you replied around a mouthful of melted cheese and pineapple topping. You felt uneasy in your stomach when Neil glared daggers at you, looking up from his plate where he was using a knife and fork to cut his pizza. He sighed audibly as his nostrils flared and started again.
“Y/N, I know this is new for you, and we haven’t had much of a chance to talk about rules and expectations. In my house, we operate on a system that upholds the home and the image of the people in it appropriately. What is that system, Billy?” Billy sat up straighter in his chair, not looking up from his plate as his father addressed him..
“Respect and responsibility,” he recited, his voice almost shaking as his jaw tightened once more.
“That’s right,” Neil agreed. “Now that you’re a part of our family, you’ll learn to respect your elders and develop a keen sense of responsibility, just like the good, caring, all-American kids I know you can be.” Neil’s hard smile appeared below his mustache as he continued. “First of all, we address our elders with courtesy. When I ask you a question, you respond accordingly. Isn’t that right, Billy?”
“Yes, sir,” he muttered, his eyes still glued to his plate.
“I’m sorry,” Neil hissed. “I couldn’t hear you.” He leaned closer to the table, eyes searing into Billy as he awaited his response. Billy straightened up even more, his eyes snapping up to meet his father’s.
“Yes, sir,” his voice ricocheted in the dining room this time, his face flushing as everyone soaked in the awkward silence. You caught Max’s eye and noticed she looked afraid and perplexed as your mother kept her gaze on Neil, trying to seem like she was listening intently to him.
“See, girls, Billy knows the drill. If you have any questions, I’m sure he can straighten them out for you. I know you’re not used to this whole thing, having a man of the house, but you’ll adjust.” Neil gestured to the pizza on the table, his smile still active as he announced, “Let’s eat!” Max looked up at you from the corner of her eye, and you shook your head slightly, signaling for her not to say anything as you took another bite of your pizza. You side eyed Billy whose gaze seemed far away as he quickly finished his dinner.
“May I be excused,” Billy asked with perfect posture, taking the napkin from his lap and piling his used utensils on his plate.
“Yes you may.” Neil waved Billy off as he stood up, pushed in his chair, and took his plate to the kitchen to be washed.
You felt anxious as you saw Neil eyeing Max while she ate, and you held your breath as he spoke again.
“Tomorrow, we’ll practice using a fork, young lady,” he said sternly as Max’s cheeks burned, embarrassed to be holding her pizza at that exact moment. Neil paused and tilted an ear in her direction, hinting that he was expecting a reply.
“Y – yes, sir,” she choked out quickly, setting her pizza back down on her plate. Your mother cleared her throat and started asking Neil more about the school, the town, and how his new job was going. You let the two of them chat away as you gave Max a worried look, seeing her pick up her knife and fork to cut out a bite of her pizza. You stood up and grabbed your plate and jumped, the sound of a fist pounding on the dining table startling you off your feet. Your mom and Max gasped simultaneously as you met Neil’s eyes.
“Where do you think you’re going, Y/N?” You caught your breath and stuttered in response.
“I – I’m sorry. May I be excused?” You looked at your mom in panic, but she averted her eyes, looking at anything but the situation before her.
“That’s better.” Neil smiled again. “Of course. Don’t forget to clean your plate.”
“Thank you…sir.” You glanced at Max once more, hoping she would follow suit so she wouldn’t be yelled at. You hurried to the kitchen, rinsing your plate in the sink and setting it out on the dish rack to dry. You steadied your breathing as the tension melted away now that you weren’t in a close proximity to Neil.
After the awkward and almost frightening dinner, all you wanted to do was talk to your sister. You knew she would be looking for an escape after enduring Neil’s intensity, so you put on your coat and grabbed your paperback copy of The Outsiders, leaving the house through the front door.
You shuffled through the dried leaves across the lawn to the only tree in the yard and perched yourself on the tire swing, propping your feet up and opening your book to your marked page. A few lines in, you heard a clanging sound followed by a sigh, and your eyes followed the noise over to a blue Camaro with the hood up. Billy was standing over the engine, using the back of his hand to swipe stray curls out of his eyes, a dirty rag draped over his shoulder.
He didn’t seem to notice you were there as he worked, tinkering with a wrench, grunting and sighing every so often. You pretended to carry on reading while you watched him work. After all, looking wasn’t a crime, and he was quite the sight to see. After a few more minutes, he set his wrench on the edge of the Camaro’s hood and grasped the hem of his sweat-speckled t-shirt with both hands, lifting it up and over his head, tossing it on the roof of his car. Your cheeks turned scarlet at the sight of his toned chest and chiseled abs sparkling with a sheen of sweat in the crisp October air.
Your gaze snapped to your book quickly, and you glued your eyes to the words on the page, determined not to look up again. Your heart hammered in your chest, and you swore you could hear the blood flowing in your ears when a voice startled you.
“Hey, are you okay?” You jolted upright at Max’s question.
“Jesus, you scared the shit out of me,” you breathed.
“Sorry. Are you okay?” She repeated her question, concern behind her bright blue eyes. “You look really flushed.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine,” you answered, forcing yourself to keep your eyes far away from where Billy was working on his car. “What about you?” Max used the ropes of the swing to lift herself up, and you moved aside to make room for her on the tire.
“I’m fine. What the hell is up with him?” Max looked almost afraid while the two of you recounted Neil’s strange behavior at dinner, coming to the conclusion that this move might not have been for the best like your mom kept insisting.
“All we can do is follow the rules and stay out of his way, I guess,” you sigh, feeling defeated. “I don’t know how far he’ll go, but Billy seems to be pretty scared of him,” you almost whisper, leaning in closer to Max. She glanced over at Billy who was still fixated on his car.
“A guy that big scared of his dad? I don’t even want to think about why,” she shuddered, her eyes dropping to the ground.
“Hey.” You touched her shoulder, and she looked up at you. “I won’t let anything happen to you. Got it?” She gave you a small smile, nodding her understanding, but you could see the anxiety behind her eyes. “We’re going to be okay.”
“I know,” she assured you. You smiled at her and grabbed the ropes of the swing to climb out of the tire. Tossing your book onto a pile of leaves next to the tree, you stood behind Max and gripped the ropes as you walked the tire backwards before giving it a hard push. Max giggled as she swung back and forth, spinning slow circles and crying out, “You’re going to make me dizzy!”
The two of you laughed together as the sun started to set on the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and even though you weren’t sure what the coming days would hold, you knew you had each other to ease the burdensome future in your new home with your new family.

Dustin looked up at me - well, past me to look at Steve, both of them saying, “The gate.”
I backed up from between them making my way back down the steps. “Ya’know, Dustin, I really hate being doubted.”
“I don’t understand,” Robin said. “You’ve seen this before?”
“Not exactly,” Steve said.
“Then what, exactly?”
“Trust me when I say it’s really bad,” I said.
“It’s really bad,” Steve added.
“Just said that, babe.”
“Like end-of-the-human-race-as-we-know-it kind of bad,” Dustin said.
“And you know about this how?” Robin asked.
“It’s a long story,” I said.
“Uhm, Steve,” Erica said. “Where’s your Russian friend?”
I turned around to look at the ground behind me, seeing that the guy was indeed gone. “Sweet shit.”
Next noise to hit our ears was the alarm blaring, Steve rushing to the door to open it and look out into the hub space we sneaked through moments earlier. I heard “Halt! Halt!” before Steve closed the door, saying, “Shit!”
We ran through a couple of doors that led us straight to the control room, all of our feet stopping when the men turned to face us. Looking to my left, I saw another flight of stairs, running towards them.
“Come on!” I yelled, hearing Steve’s voice repeating the word go. I ran down a walkway, screaming as I pushed one of the hazmat suit guys out of the way, stopping once I reached the end, almost falling to my untimely demise.
I felt Dustin’s arms around me, pulling me back, both of us repeating, “Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit!”
I breathed in deep before I screamed out, “Holy shit!”
“Guards! Go!” Erica said.
I turned around to face the rest of the group, my arm being tugged by Dustin as Steve yelled, This way!” and led us down another set of stairs, pushing a guy out of the way before pushing a set of barrels towards some more guards.
I rushed towards him, running past him and to another door, leaving it open for the rest of our group to run through. Hearing it close, I turned back around, seeing Steve and Robin leaning against it to keep some weight on it.
Dustin and Erica went to a vent cover, opening it, Erica yelling out for us to come on. I looked between my brother and boyfriend, wanting to protect both of them, but knowing I’d have to leave one.
“Liv, go with Dustin!” Steve yelled.
“I– I–” I stammered.
“I’ll find you,” he said. “Go!”
“Steve–”
“Go, get out of here! Go get some help!”
I wanted to rush to him, to plant my lips upon his, but knowing I couldn’t against his struggle on the door. Feeling myself being pulled up the stairs, I kept my eyes locked on Steve before I had to look away, almost falling into the vent shaft. Looking back at Steve, I yelled, “I love you!”
“I love you!” Steve replied before I ducked into the shaft, closing the cover as I heard Robin yelling out, guns being cocked.
“He better not die,” I muttered, following after Dustin and Erica down this vent shaft.
~~~
Sitting in front of a giant fan, Dustin explained to Erica what happened that first year when Will went missing and then explained what happened a few months ago with Dart and the demodogs.
“And now, for some insane reason, these Russian assholes want to reopen it, for God knows what reason,” I said, using my hand to fan myself… even though we were by that giant ass fan. “Destroys everything we’ve risked our lives for.”
“By we, you’re including Lucas?” Erica said.
“Yes. Even Lucas was there. Matter of fact, everyone was there, aside from our mom, your parents and Mike’s parents.”
“So, all that shit he told me, Lucas was there?” Erica asked.
“Yes, Erica, he was there.”
“My brother, Lucas Charles Sinclair?”
“Yes!” Dustin and I exclaimed.
“I don’t believe you.”
“Wait, wait, hold up,” I said, sitting up a little and facing the young girl. “You mean to tell me that you believe everything about El and the gate and Dart, but you don’t believe the fact that Lucas was there helping us protect Hawkins?”
“That’s correct.” She looked from me to Dustin before she asked, “You need help with that?”
“No,” Dustin replied.
“Well, I mean, it’s taking a while, so–”
“Yeah, no shit, Sherlock.”
“Dustin Wade!” I exclaimed.
“Alright,” Erica said. “So, if we don’t find a more efficient method to stop these fans, we’re never gonna find help, and your ice cream buddies, slash boyfriend and best friend, are screwed.”
“Yeah, with that attitude, they are,” Dustin and I said.
“Jee-zus,” Dustin added.
“I’m just being realistic,” Erica said. Looking at her watch, she said, “I mean, we’ve made it about point-three miles in nine hours. Then we had to walk three hours down that tunnel, so I’d estimate ten miles back to the elevator, which should take us approximately twelve-and-a-half days.”
I looked at her with a stunned expression as she did all that math that quickly. “Holy shit. You just did all that… in your head?”
“I’m good with numbers,” she deadpanned.
“Holy shit,” Dustin said.
“You’re a nerd!” we exclaimed.
“Come again?” Erica scoffed.
“You,” Dustin said.
“Are.” Me.
“A.” Dustin.
“Nerd,” we both ended.
Pointing her finger between the both of us, Erica said, “Okay, you better take that back, nerds.”
“Can’t put that truth back in the box,” I smiled.
“But it’s not the truth.”
“Okay, let’s examine the facts,” I said, scooting a little closer, holding my fingers out while I counted the facts. “Fact One: You’re apparently a math whiz.”
“Pretty straightforward equation.”
“Fact Two: you’re a 10 year old political junkie.”
“Just because I don’t agree with Communism as an ideology–”
“Fact Three: you love My Little Pony,” I said, grabbing her backpack and turning it to face her.
“And what does My Little Pony have to do with this?” she asked.
“Ah, let’s recall the ponies’ latest adventure, shall we?” Dustin said, which caused a confused look to come from me. “The evil centaur team and Tirek turns Applejack into a dragon at Midnight Castle, and then Megan and the other ponies have to use Moochick’s magic to defeat his rainbow of darkness, saving them from a lifetime of enslavement. All the pink in the world can’t disguise the irrefutable fact that centaurs and castles and dragons and magic are all standard nerd tropes. Ergo, My Little Pony is nerdy. Ergo, you, Erica, are a nerd.”
“Bro, what the fuck?” I murmured.
“And how do you know so much about My Little Pony?” Erica asked.
“Because I’m… a nerd,” Dustin said, taking the panel off the wall that he unscrewed during his little rant. He pulled the wires from their slots, the fan next to us powering down. “Let’s go… nerds.”
~~~
After we crawled through the blades of the fan, we made our way down the vent shaft. Whenever I spotted holes above us, I started feeling around for a loose square. Once I found it, I pushed it up and out of the way, climbing out of the shaft and onto the floor that we were crawling beneath, seeing a whole bunch of that green stuff they were putting into, what I’m calling, a gate drill.
“Jackpot,” I said, helping Erica and Dustin out of the shaft.
Spotting what seemed like a golf cart, I smiled and made my way towards it. “Hell yes!” “Do you even know how to drive?” Erica asked.
“Of course,” I said. “I’ve been driving on my own for a year. Damn it. There’s no keys.”
“You seriously thought they’d just leave keys in there?”
“There’s always a spare,” I said, more to myself. I started looking around, hearing Dustin’s rustles as he helped me look.
“Hey, Hendersons,” Erica said.
“Yeah,” Dustin and I said, getting out of the golf cart to look around more.
“How big did you say that Demogorgon was?”
“Huge,” I said.
“Nine feet or so,” Dustin said.
“Why?” we both asked.
Dustin moved to another panel box, using his screwdriver to open it, grabbing a key to the vehicle inside. “Found ‘em.”
“Dustin,” I said. “Look.”
What I was looking at was a crate, big enough for a Demogorgon.
“Ah, shit,” I said.
“Erica?” Dustin and I said, jumping at the sound of a loud zapping noise.
“What the fuck?” I breathed, holding my hand to my chest.
“What the hell is that?!” Dustin yelled.
“A deadly weapon,” Erica said, almost like she was in love with it. “Could be useful.” She zapped it again, Dustin and I jumping once more.
“For what?”
“What do you think? Taking down Commies, saving your friends.”
“Thought you were more realistic than that, nerd?”
I took the keys from him, not wanting to hear anymore of their banter for the moment. As I got behind the wheel and put the key in the ignition, I said, “We don’t even know where they are, and even if we did, there’s a million guards up there with way deadlier weapons. The best thing we can do is get out of here and find help.”
“Easy with that,” Dustin said. “Our chance of surviving, and theirs, rises substantially. Just trust us on this. Please?”
~~~
Stopping at a certain point, I got out of the cart and looked in the back, seeing boxes of that green goop sitting in it. Grabbing a couple of them, I walked a few feet in front of the cart, taking a deep breath. “Steve… this is for you.” Slamming the glass containers on the ground, I watched as they shattered, the green stuff once again eating away at the floor.
I quickly made my way back behind the wheel, trying my best to speed off. Stopping a few feet from a door, I told Dustin to charge in with that laser thing, to which he immediately did.
I charged in after Erica, standing in between her and Dustin and watching as an evil looking doctor fell to the ground. I turned to face Steve, seeing his eye bruised and swollen.
“Hey! Henderson!” Steve said, excitedly. “That’s… crazy, I was just talking about you.”
Sighing, I undid the bonds that were around his arms, hands and legs before putting my hand on his cheek. “What happened to you?”
“Oh, my god,” Robin said.
“Get ready to run!”
To say that Billy was surprised is an understatement. A whole week came and went without any inconvenience.
The asshole he has as a father isn’t even suspicious that there’s basically a fifth person living with them. In the shed, but still under their roof.
He is never, ever, going to say it out loud but he admires the guts Max has to look at Neil during diners and give no hint of any other emotion than the hate and forced respect she already harbors towards the man.
He became a silent witness of her plan. Watching her pretend to be tired earlier in the nights and leave to her room to rest only to jump through her window the next second to hang out with the boy in the shed.
And talking about the boy. The only way Billy could describe him is, strange. The boy is as silent as a mouse. He appears and disappears without making a noise. Which is creepy in the most part but thankfully helpful.
The asshole of his father has been busy recreating his righteous façade in front of everyone in Hawkins to actually pay attention to any mistake or misbehavior he does.
He could even bet that it has been the best week he’s had in years.
As for Thirteen, he’s living the best three weeks of his entire life.
Clean clothes instead of a gown, a roof to protect him, outside of the lab, learning to read comics and with a real friend.
Max even brought him to the arcade once, in the night and when it was about to close. It didn’t end that well as she thought it would. That night she found out the boy has a sensitive hearing after he bolted out of the place. ‘Too much noise’ is what he said. Since the arcade wasn’t an option anymore she came up with another idea. She would teach him how to skate.
Fortunately, she had her skateboard with her.
It was to be expected that Thirteen would fall a few times, it was his first time in his life doing a physical activity and didn’t have any kind of coordination with his feet.
When they went back to the house, Thirteen was covered in dirt, a couple of bruises and scratches but he had such a big smile in his face that only by looking at it Max couldn’t help but do the same.
Little by little Thirteen has started to open more to Max and vice versa, making it obvious that he is comfortable with her. He likes to hear about her day in the school with the other kids, the way she tells the story of a group of stalkers reminds him of the way she reads the comics. And she likes that she can openly talk about whatever she wants without the fear o being judge.
Things are working better than they both expected.
Until the day everything would change finally arrived.
Halloween.
Max loves Halloween and she’s made it clear every time she tells him stories of what she did back in Cali. She wanted him to come with her this year but after what happened in the arcade he is a little uneasy.
Besides, the only reason he wanted to be part of a big group of kids was to make a friend. He was looking for someone to help him stop being alone, and now that he has Max there’s no reason to go out there that much. Now the fear of being found is the only thing that remains in his mind.
“Still don’t want to go with me?” Asked Max to the kid seating in her closet.
The boy smiled and shook his head.
“You could use a sheet to cover yourself completely like in the E.T. movie I showed you. The group of stalkers will be there…” at least, she hopes they’ll be there after her step brother almost ran over them with the car after school. “We’ll meet in the street for trick or treat.”Thirteen frowned a little, considering the pros and cons in his head but the worry was still evident in his face. “Still don’t want to?”
The boy pressed his lips together before shaking his head.
Max was internally disappointed but she understood his fear. She already tried running away to her biological father when she found out they were moving from Cali to Hawkins. She was just as paranoid and worried. She only lasted a few hours away from her house, and she doesn’t how log has the kid been hiding.
“Are we still up for sweets and comics, though?” She asked getting an instant nod from the boy with a big smile.
She was confused for a second when she saw his smile fall and glance at the door. The boy slide the door of the closet almost completely, avoiding being engulf by total darkness, just in time when her mother opened her bedroom door.
“Sweetie, do you have your costume yet?” She asked in her always flowery and nervous tone. Max still doesn’t get why she is so jittery with her own daughter.
“Yeah, this.” Max rose the mask of Michael Myers and fake knife she had in her hands. She already had her black coverall that belonged to her father on. The measures were changed to fit by Susan herself a year ago and fits perfectly.
Her mother gave her a little forced smile. “Are you sure? I could try to make something with the things in the closet. There’s still time.” She recommended, pointing at the closet in the hallway.
Max pressed her lips in a thin line. Comments like that are common from her mother. She knows that Susan would like to have a more feminine daughter. One that prefers to use make up. One that has girls as friends to go shopping with instead of boys to skateboard with in the neighborhood. One that likes princesses and romance instead of monsters and assassins.
But she wasn’t like that and she’s didn’t want to be like that.
“No. This is fine.” She said.
Her mother nodded with the forced smile still in her face. “Okay then. Am. Have fun.” Not knowing what else to say she turned back and closed the door behind her.
Max let out the breath she was holding. Why everything in her life has to be weird?
She turned to the closet when she heard it slide open. The boy looked at her with his brows furrowed in worry. She looked upset.
Max understood the look. Her friends used to look at her the same way back in Cali. “It’s just-“ She pointed at the door with her thumb but didn’t know what to say or to explain. “I-“ she was interrupted when Billy passed by the door saying her name in a singsong tone.
“Max~” Even though it sounded like he was happy Max could still identify the dangerous threat deep down.
“Just a minute.” She yelled when she heard his footsteps going further in the hall. She turned back to the kid as she walked backwards to the door. “Comics and sweets when I return?”
The boy nodded.
“Max. I’m leaving.” Shouted Billy from the front door, his singsong tone completely gone.
Feed up with him she opened the door and yelled her answers rushing down the hall. “I’m coming.”
Thirteen blinked a few times, watching in curiosity at the opened door. He still doesn’t understand their bond. They seem to care and know about the other but act so hostile.
Max closed the front door behind her, already out of the house, finding Billy leaning against his car with a lit cigarette in his mouth. He was invited to a costume party and yet, his costume was a leather jacket covering his shirtless torso, fingerless black gloves, dark jeans and his usual boots. That wasn’t even a costume, but when you have the popularity Billy does, nobody gives a shit.
“What, the rat is not coming to be a looser with you?” He asked taking the cigarette out of his mouth, taking a final drag and throwing it in the floor before opening the car’s door.
Max threw him a side glance, not at all agreeing with the way he speaks.
“He is a boy and no. He wants to stay.” Billy turned to his stepsister, looking at her over the car.
“The brat better not blow the cover because I swear to god Max.” He threatened.
Max rolled her eyes as she got in the passenger sit. As if she didn’t know what could happen if Neil finds the boy. “I already told you, nobody’ll know he is there.”
“Hey.” scolded the older boy once inside. “Watch. Your attitude.” He threatened, making a pause to be sure Max understand he is being serious.
She understood. Max looked at the front, avoiding the glare Billy threw at her.
He huffed in annoyance turning on the engine and driving out.
But he couldn’t help the question that lingered in his mind.
What kind of monster is that guy for the kid to rather stay in a strangers house than to go back home?
He slightly tightened his hold in the wheel.
He shouldn’t be thinking about it. It’s not like it’s his problem. Why should he care about a coward?
Unknown to the step-siblings on their way to celebrate halloween, Thirteen was still in Max’s room searching through the box full of comics a few that he could take to the shed.
Even though he can’t read that well he loves to watch the colorful pictures of the stories. Even more when those are telling Magneto’s story.
He feels like he can identify himself with him a little. Their powers are similar, they both can control things with their minds but magneto only controls metals while thirteen controls any kind of material.
But his story is the most intriguing. He sees magneto as someone really brave, confronting the masses for the opportunity to free himself and those who are like him. And he is feared for his capabilities, just like it happened to him in the lab.
The day he finally unleashed his powers was to protect himself from the people who tasered him on his father’s orders. He screamed and sent flying everyone in the room against the walls, breaking the white tiles. They feared him that day.
He just wants to be as brave as Magneto to confront those who wronged him.
He was in his voyage when he heard the always heavy footsteps of Neil. He knew both him and Susan were in the house due to the sounds they make, but Neil was getting to close to comfort, and the door of the room was open.
He grabbed the two comics he already found and jumped trough the open window, squatting down once he landed to reduce the noise to the minimum.
He acted in the right moment because once he was out Neil stoped at the door when he caught something moving in his peripheral vision.
The man furrowed his eye brows as he entered the room. It was a mess by his standards, just like Billy’s. But the place looked empty of any presence.
No one could fit under the bed and the closet had only clothes, the only option left was the open window that let the autumn wind enter.
The boy outside was tiptoeing along the backside of the house without making a single sound, still crouched. He turned around the corner and pressed his back to the wall just before the adult stuck his head out of the window. He waited patiently, keeping his breathing even. He could still hear him breathing heavily by the window, inspecting the surroundings.
Assured that everything was in order the man grunted an went back inside, not before closing the window and locking it from the inside. It’s not like that would stop Thirteen but the man didn’t know.
The boy waited some more time, just to be sure. He heard his footsteps reach the living room and take a seat in the old couch that creaked under his weight accompanied by Susan’s voice.
When the coast was clear he walked calmly back to the shed with the comics in hand ready to wait for Max to come back with the sweets she promised.
Coming back home wasn’t as easy or peaceful as the teenagers thought it would be.
Max waited for Billy for an hour before she realized that he was never going to pick her up, so she ended up walking all the way home.
The situation got worse when she found Neil and her mother waiting for them awake and in the living room.
Neil was fuming, already assuming and getting it right about why she came back home alone.
Max tried to lie about Billy dropping her at the front door and leaving to droop one of his friends and that he would be back soon. But the lie flew out of the window when said teenager appeared stumbling and staggering through the front door two minutes later.
When his father asked him why he was late Billy made the excuse that he had a flat tire.
Those simple words left both teenagers as liars and idiots. And yet, Neil’s anger was solely directed to his excuse of a son.
Max left to her room before everything started, she already knew what was coming. Neil beating the shit out of his son, Billy not having the courage to fight back and her mother watching, to much of a coward to either live the scene or stop her husband.
Max stayed in her room imagining she was in another place, in another world, pretending she didn’t know Billy enough to care about him. But actually, it was the opposite.
They’ve had a few moment between them in which they manage to understand each other silently. Without having to mention they’re main problem. Neil and Susan’s uncomfortable relationships that put they’re lives upside down.
But while she was creating walls to protect herself from her powerlessness, Thirteen had come out of the shed a few minutes ago. When he heard Max walking to and opening the front door to be exact.
He sneaked into her room, unlocking the window with his powers, waiting for her in her closet. But when she took longer than normally and he heard Neil’s voice grow more and more dangerous, he went back outside to see the living room trough the window.
He saw and heard everything that happened. He even witnessed Neil hitting Billy and beating him to the ground.
That man was like papa, it’s what he thought.
Watching Billy get beat made Thirteen’s blood boil so much he didn’t realize his powers where starting to act up.
The shelf beside them fell loudly startling a scream out of Susan and distracting Neil. The sudden pause at least got him to calm down and see his son seating in the floor, beaten and drunk. He thought that was enough, he didn’t want to leave a mark of obvious evidence in him, he didn’t need someone coming to ask questions.
Thirteen went back to Max’s room. He knocked on the window, getting her attention. She turned towards the boy, taking the mask off.
Once he was inside, he instinctively sat down beside her and gave her a hug.
Oh how much Max wanted to cry right there. But she hates crying. She didn’t let any tears come out but she leaned in to the boy’s hug.
The world doesn’t deserve someone like Thirteen, is what came to her mind. So young and so aware of the bad things and yet, he remains with a heart of gold.
They stayed like that for what felt like hours until everything calmed down. They waited when everyone was back in they’re room, and even a few minutes after that.
They sat in the girl’s bed, getting more comfortable.
Max dumped the bag full of candys in her bed between them. She had skittles, 3 musketeers, nerds, fireballs, monchitos, tunos and a lot more she didn’t know existed.
She was obviously trying to change the atmosphere and thankfully it was working.
“You know, I’ve been thinking…” mumbled Max with her mouth stuffed with whoppers, making sure to speak softly. She didn’t want anyone coming to knock on her door when she should be asleep. “Do you remember when magneto choose another name when he was on the run?” she asked the kid. Thirteen nodded, still munching in a bar of the three musketeers. “I was thinking. What if you do the same? Having a number as a name easily raises suspicions. But if you have another name…” she left the idea hanging, already noticing the understanding in the kids expression.
The boy opened his eyes wide, nodding a few times in happiness.
“Wanna choose a name?” She asked after she swallowed the chocolate.
With the most innocent eyes and without hesitation he said. “Magneto.”
Max laughed a bit and shook her head. The kid was to innocent for his own good. “Magneto is not a name for a person. That’s his title as a villain.” She explained.
Thirteen deflated a little bit. He wanted a name from magneto.
He thought for a moment under Max’s attentive eyes. Until he came with an idea. “Magnus.” He said in a dreamy tone of voice.
Max repeated the name in her head and in a whisper, testing how it sounds before nodding. “Magnus. I like that.” She extended her hand, expecting the kid to do the same.
Thirteen looked at her hand for a second, not getting the memo, but he trusts her so he raised his hand, blinking a few times when she grabbed it and shook it.
She smiled at him. “Nice to meet you, Magnus.” She said
Thirteen felt cheeks warming and a smile spreading in his face. He likes how it sounds. “Nice to meet you.” He whispered.
He now has a name, a friend and a place to stay. He has everything he ever wanted, and he’ll do everything in his power to protect it.
