Wait a damn minute Merlin is an actual nightmare of a servant. Imagine you're the Prince and all of a sudden and only two seconds after surviving an assassination attempt you're stuck with this scrawny, clumsy fucking dude with a really shifty air about him who spends literal days in the tavern with zero notice, steals your food, tried to spy on a guest, doesn't let you hunt, can never fucking be found when you need him even though he is the literal manservant to the prince, which you would think should be a priority but apparently he has better things to do, and is always talking like he's the only thing standing between you and certain death???? Then he gives you attitude? Literally I would throw things at him too. Arthur is misunderstood he's actually being too nice

I think what really gets to me with the finale is that Merlin was so close to getting Arthur to the lake. Yet, there was no plan beyond that. It's like even if they did get there, who knows if anything would have happened.

The idea that there was still more tragedy awaiting even if they made it, that yeah despite all of Merlin’s magic, he couldn't save Arthur's life.

It was always the possibility of the Sidhe, but there was no guarantee. It was all hope from the start, endless hope that failed them in the end.

Because well, it was always supposed to happen like this anyway... Arthur was meant to die so he could rise again, there was no alternative

i know for a fact i have made this post before but for me it's very important that bbc merlin is a pointless tragedy. it wouldn't be good (it's frequently not good anyway but it would be a lot further away from good) if it wasn't a pointless tragedy! it's simply not arthuriana if it doesn't go past the high point of the heroic/legendary/high medieval romance stuff and end with detailed rundowns of exactly how everybody got betrayed and died like that is what makes it real arthuriana to me and not just a silly show about a wizard

#'why did he die at the end! why did they make us miserable? why can't we have nice things!'#BECAUSE IT'S ARTHURIANA OKAY .that's what HAPPENS #if you're doing arthuriana you're not doing it right unless when you finally get to the end of this endless string of knight adventures #the main guy is like. dead and you're like well . what am i supposed to do now #like when i first read the great illustrated classic abridged king arthur in third grade and got to the end ofi t #and guinevere had been sent to a nunnery and half the nights had died in this battle or that one and merlin had been stuck in a cave #and then arthur dies and bedivere chucks his sword in a lake and then the book just ENDS #and i sat there consumed with emotions id never felt before. well i would've been disappointed if the end of bbc merlin had #NOT made me feel those emotions again #but it did. to me that is in fact its greatest success #merlin #q #like. dont get me wrong i like a fixfic as much as the next guy and in fact i plot them out all the time #but you cant DO that if the original material is. like. already happy #or meant to be

i wish merlin had killed even more people in canon. he deserved it. that scene where he kills agravaine and his men? the best thing in the show ever. he needed a scene where he killed someone with his bare hands 0 magic used. and a scene where he brought down a whole army like its nothing AS HIMSELF. and a scene where he cut someone's throat with a knife. and a scene where. sorry im getting carried away. im right tho

reading what julian jones said in an audio commentary about that merlin and gwaine scene in ep 4x07 I'm screaming

[Gwaine is waiting for Merlin in Gaius’s chambers.] Merlin: I’m busy. Gwaine: Doing what? Merlin: What do you think? RW: So Gwaine wasn’t in this, uh, initially? Not in this scene? JJ: Well, there was a scene that was in, um, the armoury, from what I remember. RW: Yeah. JJ: And, um…Merlin got quite angry that Arthur wasn’t doing anything and was uncharacteristically rude, in fact, and was quite bolshie. And I think that is what motivates, uh, Gwaine to come and offer to help out. RW: Yeah. JJ: And so that wasn’t there for Gwaine. And in the end, the scene really wasn’t…wasn’t necessary. It didn’t take us anywhere. This scene’s a lovely scene because it’s a relationship. We know that they have a close relationship. RW: That they’re close, yeah. [Agravaine watches Gwaine and Merlin ride off together.] JJ: Yeah, and you instinctively understand why Gwaine has gone there to help out his friend and, um, Merlin, feeling the whole world’s against him…rejects this. Um, but then, slowly, they form a partnership and um…which is, uh, going to drive us towards, uh, rescuing [Gaius].
