The Master And Margarita Jacket

(Matthew Sweet’s Doctor Who version…but with a frisson of Bulgakov’s)

It’s done! With every bit of unphotographical glittery metallic paint that I can’t capture on camera even if my iphone skills weren’t rubbish.

@spoonietimelordy, @rearranging-deck-chairs, @bearinabandana and everyone else who Did The Reading of that one ‘I Am The Master’ novel but I’ve forgotten to tag because i’m so sleep deprived i can’t think any more but hopefully other people will, assemble!

Detailed closeups and explanations (with some spoilers) below:

Starting front top right side (face on). -Margarita herself, biting a mushroom. A more Cockatoo beak than Macaw, with red face instead of white, to make what exactly she is more mysterious. -The Master Who logo here is just gold, any shading didn’t look right when it was so thin.

Front top right pocket. Purple, of course.

-Next section down are these three. The ‘Never Stop Growing’ patch is my second favourite patch of the bunch. So many Master Themes, and plot relevant. -Then the little ‘Best Buds’ with the heart in the middle. I was inordinately proud of that idea. (Buds, budding, bigenerated vibe). -And then ‘Obscene Lotus’. That’s mentioned early in the book, and while it’s just described as a big purplish lotus, there’s so much sexual charging in that scene that, well, you gotta.

Me, reusing the ‘budding’ pun in a different capacity? It’s more likely than you think.

-The cover of the Penguin Clothbound Classic version of the original The Master And Margarita, that took multiple days to complete and so much agony. -The patch is a blank one that I bought, then painted the design to look like one of those stamps people sometimes put in books. Painted the border the same colour, then tea-stained it to look like old paper. Certainly in real life the colour comes out nicely. I couldn’t find his autograph (and sadly there’s an unrelated artist with the same name lol) but he got his doctorate in Wilkie Collins so I just looked up examples of that guy’s writing and tried to give it a bit of that vibe. Hopefully it’s the thought that counts. But hey, if anyone ever meets him and gets me a signature sample I can just redo it.

General mushroom patch - I like the fire kind of vibe and the looming.

To the other side!

So. You’re asking what’s with the daisy theme. Fair. So Margarita is also another name for a daisy in some languages. I choose to lean into that because it’s also the widely known symbol of Three - with that scene where he talks to Jo and recounts how a hermit living on a mountain helped dispel his depression by getting him to focus on the beauty of the flower (“and it was the most daisiest daisy”). Given that Three is essentially a character in the book, this felt like the vibe we’re going for. It’s perennial. It also is a healer of bruises and wounds, how can that not be relevant meta wise too to the Master’s new companion, hm? And okay yes, Mikhail does say he’s not a botanist, but if you can think of another way to get that message across other than botanical illustration page…

I like the patch because lightbulb, idea, full of mushrooms etc.

-‘I Am The Master’ being the name of the book the story is contained in, plus Fun With Identity. -Next the one bit of Real Art that I attempted to copy in glittery acrylics - Magritte’s ‘The Treachery Of Images’ or more commonly known ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’. The story not only of the Master’s experiences recently, but the story’s themes of hallucinations and deceptions; as well as being the symbol of Russian!Brigadier. -This patch is great isn’t it? A play on the Master’s apparent alcoholism or Russian blending in as you prefer, and of course, The Lighthouse of Martin!Doctor fame.

-Mikhail’s guitar for playing Brown Sugar and other ominous inference songs. -The formula triangle of Love, Food, and Music (I couldn’t think of a self-evident way to show his approach to food - Russian dumplings are, well, not exactly distinct). On its side so the glittery pink triangle points in a certain direction because he’s escaped places and I can do ominous inferences too Sweet. -Maybe controversial? There is a failed love story component in here though, that I just couldn’t leave unmarked. The Doctor, K’vo, and Jo all have their parts to play in that.

Now for the arms:

Here’s the right-side looking-on arm. -I repainted this mushroom patch to be the orange and green of K’vo’s. -You’ve already seen the long image of it above, so here’s just a snippet closeup of the motif that goes along both arms. Daisies linked in a chain with the words ‘daisiest daisy’ (if you wonder why everything’s outlined by the way, a) i like the style, and b) it makes glitter infinitely more legible and clearer to see if there’s a dark matt border around it breaking it up, especially with something as variable coloured as denim). There’s the sunflower in the middle because Margarita loves her sunflower seeds.

This is the other arm. Margarita holding a margarita in a margarita. What’s more to add? I used my shittest white (mixed with my fabric medium as everything else has been at every step) rather than @yesokayiknow’s excellent suggestion of Liquitex, which has saved me everywhere else, including those light patches. But here shitty kids basics acrylic is translucent enough to do some excellent work pretending to be glass and ice. The parrot patch has been altered to make the beak entirely black and her face red instead of macaw white, to keep her species ambiguous as literary theme demands.

To the back!

This Master Who logo is bigger, so it has the Master’s purple highlights like bruising.

Here is a small UNIT patch I modified to be a Russian one, globe focused on their continent (roughly). Sweet just translated the word ‘unit’ for Russian!Brigadier’s group, and the text is the re-cyrilliced version of that.

Skipping to the bottom…

Here referencing O’s collection of Doctor Information, Sweet adding to that with having distinct scrapbooks. ‘Manuscripts Don’t Burn’ is a line from Bulgakov’s The Master And Margarita (spoken by Satan in fact, mhmm) and became something of a rallying cry for oppressed Russian artists. I have ‘Author Unknown’ for the obvious meta with his and the Doctor’s memories, and likewise, the fact that flames are clearly present and burning lets the viewer come to whatever conclusion they like. #133 was chosen for the simple fact that in my copy of Bulgakov’s novel, and the one depicted on the front of the jacket, it is page 133 which starts the chapter The Hero Enters, where we meet The Master who has renounced all other names (who is very much, as Interference notes, the Doctor). They are glitter paint titles done on Hemline repair patches, black, brown, white, and navy blue. I know anything too painty on that area of the back will risk a lot of wear, and these are easily replaced when necessary (if still hours of lettering).

To the left most side…

This was the most expensive patch I bought, £12. But worth it. The mushroom stalk is silk.

Here I depicted in silhouette the scene of the Master climbing up to the Doctor on the giant mushroom. I chose silhouette so as not to draw the eye too much. I also added some 2ply black-black glitter cotton as part of his climbing equipment, attached on by some silver stitches for the…things I can’t remember the name of. It gives it a bit more 3D effect, but also keeps the thread close enough it shouldn’t pull on anything.

And at its base we have a reference to Mikhail’s chosen middle name. I chose to believe it’s relevant, Sweet’s too deep into this for it not to be. This is a cover I edited to highlight the namesake who actually travelled Russia and collected the tales of this book, and indeed, it does include the story of Koschei The Deathless. I edited the robe to be red instead of its original yellow, and added the quintessential Time Lord collar. But I think it’s perfectly passable. This is iron on transfer paper (dark) onto a very light grey polycotton to turn it into a patch. It…*cough* hasn’t had its edges finished or strictly been attached yet, but that’s a bit of handwork I can do as and when.

So finally back up to the middle

I’ve expanded out @spoonlesss-artbook fantastic angel-winged Margarita’s Master art. The Redbubble bag was only that big as it was (hemmed with bostik fabric glue like a true pro and attached as a panel) so it cut off a little, and it didn’t go the whole way anyway, so now we get some endings of the feathers, some all the way up to the arm of the jacket. I tried to blend it into the fire, one creature of both. And trying to get a multidimensional feel, boundary breaking. And again, very glittery irl so plays very well with the fire theme. It was fun when it came to colour-matching particularly the blue wing at the top, because the glitter gives it a bit of a sheen. I blunted it with a few careful washes of black so it still sparkles but is the right colour in most angles.

The Redbubble edit cuts @spoonietimelordy’s signature, so I copied it from the original and moved it over to the left side in some sparkly silver. Also internet doxxing my real life self on the bottom of the back as my own signature.

Doesn’t look like the sort of thing that would take weeks when you see it all together, but I’m really happy with it. I’m so grateful for everyone who’s shown their brilliant art to me and shared posts about painting all these years, cus it allowed me to absorb stuff and let me come out of the gate swinging! It feels thoroughly addictive. Even if I only know ‘use tiny brush’ for almost everything and glitter metallic is great for hiding sins. (And a ‘Ha!’ in the face of my mother keeping me away from it my whole life because of mess - I never got even a single speck on any clothes that wasn’t this jacket. I could’ve been doing this for years rather than just picking up a brush at the age of thirty-damn-one. But at least I’ve got it now).

@void-botanist I'm making a whole new post on my main so I don't hijack your writeblr but re: salmon leap it's perfectly okay that there's no salmon in it because Cú Chulainn is in Puzzle and Dragons, one of my favorite video games ever, and now I get to infodump about it. For context PAD is a gacha game (sorry) where you match orbs on the board to attack monsters and.. that's the entire game they only just added story dungeons like a couple years ago but I like it a lot. It's like if bejeweled had bigger numbers and let you move the jewels anywhere you wanted. And the music and weapon designs are really cool.

(disclaimer: I don't play PAD consistently anymore and I'm kinda behind on the meta, and I've never used Cú Chulainn on a team, so take all of this with a grain of salt)

So this is card #1209, Wolf Hero, Ignis Cú Chulainn. 1209 sounds like a lot but this game has been around since like.. 2012, and idk when this card dropped but it's likely pretty close to ten years.

There are a lot of different evos but I'm just going with this one for now. I doubt it's historically accurate, this game just pulls deities from a lot of different mythologies and does whatever the hell it wants with them. But it does look cool!

It's a wood/fire attribute, which means it deals wood (PAD version of grass type in Pokémon) and fire damage. Since fire is its second attribute it usually doesn't deal as much fire damage.

So these are its current awoken skills. Those are basically like passive skills that deal extra damage, change how the board looks, etc. for example the one with the 7 and the red arrow makes it so that if you get 7 combos or more, that card gets a damage boost. The more of those 7c skills a card has, the more that effect is multiplied. So having 3 of them on one card is pretty cool. I don't think 1209 is the strongest card at all but it's gotten a lotttt of buffs since it first dropped; the entire game is subject to a lot of power creep so the devs are constantly adapting old cards to fit the new meta.

The blue squares are a different type of awoken skill called a latent awakening, and if I explained every detail I'd be here all day but basically they increase how much damage 1209 does against certain types of monsters. It doesn't have all of those latents at once but I could pick a few to give to it if I wanted.

So now I'd like to take a look at a different Cú Chulainn Evo that I have actually used, #3919, Gáe Bulg. The huge jump in numbers is because this card was added like years after 1209.

Tbh I don't remember which team I used this card on, it's been years, but I can tell you how to use it. This is a special type of evo called an assist (or inherit). Basically that means that you don't put the card on a team as its own unit. Instead you attach it to a different card, and the main card "inherits" this card's awoken skills, its active skill (which is basically when you press a button and then something cool happens like a stat boost or changing the attributes of the orbs of the board), and a fraction of its stats IF the inherit and the main card share an attribute. 3919 is just a wood attribute, so based on that alone it'd be best on a wood attribute card if you want that stat boost. But you can also look at the awoken and active skills to make sure:

Active skill: Unlock all orbs; Change Heal, Jammer, Poison, Mortal Poison, and Bomb orbs to Wood orbs

To be clear, this set of awoken skills is kinda weak by 2024 meta standards if you're trying to beat mid-level to endgame dungeons and there are plenty of better cards you can use. 3919 hasn't been hit by the power creep beam. But let's pretend that it's 2016-ish and this is a really powerful card still lol. So starting with the awoken skills, the sword and shield one just tells you that all the following skills can be used by the main card as well. There are 2 enhanced wood orb awokens. Each orb deals a set amount of damage on its own, but when it's enhanced that damage is multiplied by a small amount. The one with the fire attribute symbol on the shield makes that fire attribute types against you deal slightly less damage. And the sword just boosts that card's overall attack a little bit. Finally the active creates more wood orbs, which goes well with the orb enhance awokens. Basically, this is the kind of card you'd want on a team that mostly deals wood attribute damage.

I don't really have a conclusion for this, I could spend an hour talking about these cards alone because this game is so dense lol. But yeah, that's the kinda info you'd take into account if you were building a team. I left a lot of details out but if people ask I'm always happy to explain. Tentatively pinging @vacantgodling and @wayfarer-orca , because y'all both like this game iirc and would maybe enjoy seeing it on the dash

Thinking about how Bruce and Clark land on the idea of swapping partners to spice things up. Although it was an of hand joke made under the influence, neither could let the idea go.

Clark bringing it up to you, another meta, and Bruce to Selina. Clark blushes and fumbles through the confession, but eventually he asks what you think. Shock hits you first, but then the more you think about it, the more appealing it becomes.

The 4 of you decide that this will be a way to explore yourself and your partner better. Almost like a couples retreat! Although you all are excited to learn new tips, tricks, and honest feedback that you wouldn’t otherwise get, you all agree it’s best to come up with rules and safe words ahead of time.

Let’s meet our cast shall we? :

Y/N :

The Jack of all trades. Making a name for herself along the eastern seaboard, Y/N is a black freelance artist who works as a museum curator. Her power allows her to have superhuman strength, speed and endurance, while her meta gene allows her to bend, absorb, and manipulate solar energy. Much like Clark, her power comes from the sun. Known as the Golden Gladiator, her heroics are only brought up in times of severe crisis. She often prefers her civilian life and the privileges it affords, as her secret identity has only been shared with those she can trust. Wild card : Likes when she and Clark can let go of being cautious and careful. Since they both have similar energy sources, their lovemaking can actually be a way to transfer solar radiation. Whether it’s in the middle of a battle or at home, this has proven to be extremely rewarding over the course of their relationship. Because the two of them are metas, they can focus on each other rather than their ✨destructive✨ actions. Extra Bonus : Y/N is curious to see how this experience will improve her skills and impact their relationship.

Note : Although this is not an OC, as I write Y/N I am imagining some of Teyonah Paris’s characteristics.

Kal / Clark :

Strong and Sensitive. This big boy is the definition of the “Country boy I love youuu!” Vine. Between his responsibilities as a reporter and as earths biggest hero, he always makes sure he has time for you. His biggest asset is his attention to your senses. Over the last few years of marriage, you’ve found that he can always tell how you’re feeling before the words even leave your mouth. His size comes as an added bonus, but his wild card is using it in his knack for overstimulation. As an attentive partner, he’ll make sure that all your needs are taken care of and catered to at the utmost importance. All he asks in return is that you try to keep up with him. :) King of Aftercare. Will talk you through it while showering you with his praise. Both physical touch and words of affirmation are his ways of showing his devotion. Extra bonus : He becomes a slight tease when you’re loopy. He’ll ask you to tell him what you want or how you want it; and when you can’t deliver, he’ll keep going until you can.

Bruce :

Calculating and Experienced. The opposite of the man from Smallville in almost every way. Where Clark likes to be soft as if he was working with clay, Bruce is more equipped to be as efficient and in control as possible like a botanist with a bonsai tree. King of edging. Won’t let you cum until he thinks you deserve it. Will make you beg in the best way. Has a knack for public play and shibari. All his travel and escapades has made him extremely aware of his likes and dislikes, so it’s very unlikely you’ll surprise him with any requests. He’s usually playing brat tamer so this will be a nice change of pace. Wild card : Is not afraid of his sexuality or pushing his limits. He shows his adoration in gifts rather than words. His past consistent lovers would usually be showered in parting gifts, for example Selina’s Tiara collection. You would be no exception to this rule and in his aftercare you will look up things you want. He will get annoyed if you speak up about prices; and as punishment he’ll make you add more to your cart. Extra bonus: Can and will make you cum without touching you. His biggest goal is to beat his personal record of withholding your release.

Selina :

Sensual and Clever. Selina will play her partners like a symphony. The woman is the perfect match for the man who plans for everything. This cat found her way to Gotham City after trying to find a fresh start when her first life was taken from her. Her objective is to leave them wanting her more than they ever thought possible. Wild card : She revels in the idea of being both a brat and a dominatrix. So being able to play with both roles has her more excited than anyone. Although I mainly thought of this because of the endless possibilities that a chaotic superhuman wifeswap would entail; I do credit some of the inspiration from the “Listening Party” Series by @canumoveurseatup-no Aka Bexie. Literally one of the greatest writers of our time! I can only hope that one day I’m able to express my thoughts and ideas like they can 💖

Last night I finally completed the foyer of Château Greystone, the royal estate. As back story, Parliament actually voted to establish a royal residence for Aymeric way back in SB, but debated where it should go for ages.

The House of Lords insisted it should be located within the Pillars for reasons of obvious self-interest, but Aymeric felt it would send the wrong message about why he restored the throne. As the self-professed People’s King, he insisted he should live among the commons.

The Firmament was the perfect solution, as a potent symbol of Ishgard’s rebirth and new, egalitarian, forward-looking future, spearheaded by Prince Stephanivien’s house. The royal family living there—the heroes who ended the war and made it possible—would make folk flock to it, thus contributing to its growth and allow it to flourish. So construction began when the area was complete. “Greystone” was chosen as its name by Gisele, not only to honor Prince Haurchefant, but as a powerful rebuke to the prejudices that irrevocably shaped his life and Aymeric’s.

Its actual location is in the heart of the Firmament, on the plateau overlooking Snowsoak; the FC Medium I got in Empyreum is a placeholder since I’ll never get the equivalent Large plot. But here’s a tour nonetheless.

Prince Haurchefant's portrait offers a friendly greeting immediately on the left, as a nod to him being the first to welcome Gisele to Coerthas.

His Majesty is ofc directly at the far end, surrounded by blue flowers. Aymeric is a botanist well versed in the Ishgardian language of flowers and all of the plants in the manor were selected by him to send subtle messages. The orange trees in the antechamber convey joy and mirth to put guests at ease, for example. The roses beneath the royal portraits all correspond to their signature colors.

Prince Estinien has dragons flanking him, ofc. Those statues were a gift from Hien.

Around the corner there's a small antechamber that serves as a reception area for guests to relax while they await an audience or are otherwise welcomed. A trick bookshelf hides the entrance leading to Prince Stephanivien's workshop. (Meta: the FC chamber door. I decided the FC workshop is canon, but it’s Stephanivien’s tinkering cave) Speaking of which: he went nuts designing fortifications and defensive mechanisms for the estate. If he activates a specific series of levers, the entire visible upper part of the manor can pull in on itself and submerge entirely underground, the whole estate sinking several levels deeper with it (bearing in mind Ishgardian manors are built down). Just like Figaro Castle.

Hades helped with designing some of the architectural details, which is why there’s a subtle Amaurotine vibe (all the pillars, mainly). Construction on the manor didnt start until after the Firmament was complete since that’s where it’s located, so he was back by then.

But there’s a lot of subtle nods to the entire elfpile throughout this area. There's a Fortemps chandelier, roses are Gisele's signature ofc but are also to honor House Haillenarte, as is the wall decor in Haillenarte Green. The halberds near the fireplace are for Estinien. The moogle fountain* for Ysayle. XD

*A note on the fountain: is silly ofc and Estinien's portrait faces it because Ysayle thinks it's hilarious. But it's also an easter egg for me. The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World has a fountain w Mary Poppins penguins as you enter the foyer of the original DVC building, fancy & whimsical at the same time:

I love flower symbolism so yahooo I have diagnosed Kirby characters with flowers which I feel would be associated with them.

Kirby - Gerbera Daisy Flowers. They represent innocence, cheerfulness, devotion and joy. The flowers are named after the German botanist who helped to discover the flowers. The flower' symbolism comes from cultures (such as Egyptian) who associate the flowers with the devotion to nature. (source)

King Dedede - Marigolds. Marigolds are often associated with power, strength, and the hope that is buried inside a person. These meanings have come from old myths and other cultures. (I don't have a source for this one.)

Meta Knight - Gladiolus flowers. Gladiolus are also called "Sword Lilies." They are said to represent integrity and strength in time of need, as well as calm infatuation and honor. This symbolism has been shown in Rome, where they were associated with Gladiators who wore them. Because of this, they became associated with the traits of Gladiators, which people believe are the ones previously stated. (Source)

Bandana Waddle Dee - Sunflowers. They are associated with adoration, loyalty and longevity. This symbolism comes from Native American cultures who celebrated sunflowers in their harvest festivities. (Source)

I'm AR60 on Europe server, AR59 on Asia server and AR58 on America server, but I'm afraid I'm not currently open to co-op rn since I have a very...personal reasons as to why heh. I won't be able to give you my UID in public as well (unless ur a moot! If so, feel free to ask me!) because my family plays Genshin with me and they certainly know what's my account 😂 I'd rather not have them know I write fanfics afー

I main Albedo (he's C4 now! and planning to c6 him soon!), but I usually switch to my C6 Diluc 💀. My team mostly consists/rotates between Xiao, Tighnari, Ayato, Kazuha, Hu Tao, Venti, Raiden and Zhongli. Not so proud of their builds though and I'm dumb when it comes to meta stuff so I won't be able to help you much if you ask me xD

Not so fun fact: I benched my Ayaka and C2 Keqing because they're poorly built 💦 did I mention that the rascal ginger dude didn't come home to me in ALL of his banners? 🙂

little meta things : gen & their dads

gen's birth father is, in almost every verse, gen's best friend. they have a very tight bond, but he wasn't around for most of her growing up years. their parents got divorced when she was three, mom got custody [this would prove to be such a horrible mistake], and they stayed with him on christmas and for a few weeks in the summer per custody agreement.

her mother tried to turn them against him any chance she could, and gen just never really fell for it. she wanted to go live with him but because of multiple reasons they couldn't and that did make her a little bitter. especially when things kept getting worse with her mother. they didn't tell him what was going on for a very very long time, not until a few months before her mother died.

he lives with his husband in a beautiful old house in [unspecified city bcs i can't ever decide] and they let gen crash there whenever she needs to. her birth dad is a professor who also has a huge fascination with all things spooky and creepy and his husband/gen's adopted dad is a botanist.

there are verses where she lives with just her birth dad, but in general she does not grow up with him. things would have been different if she had.

The Alphas of Veda

In Veda, the top one hundred Betas and all Alphas are kept on a power ranking list. This is done for a lot of reasons, but the one most people care about is the online shows that broadcast the updated list changes. The hosts of these shows often show off public ability showcases the Betas and Alphas have done, events involving them recently, and all sorts of other BS.

Think of it like celebrity culture, but with superpowers.

The Alpha list only has seven people on it, at the start of Descent. It contains only the Alphas who are both currently alive and currently residing in the city.

There have been other Alphas in the city. Three of them have died before the story begins and one is currently not in the city. Thus, there are four Alphas in the history of Veda left off this list.

The first Alpha in the world, Gertrude Grey, was marked as an Alpha in 1994 and held the position as number one Alpha from the list's conception in 2011 to her death in 2034.

The list, ranked from most powerful to least powerful, in accordance to R scores, is as follows.

#1: Fiyero Monasterio

He/Him, 26. Pyrokinesis. Joined list in 2034.

The terrifying right hand of Thad Fabulon and the boogeyman of the Chorus. The third Alpha to ever be granted the rank of #1 Metahuman in Veda and the only person to ever regain that rank after losing it. Fiyero is a tattooed, smokey man who answers to Fabulon for reasons unknown. He is known for fighting in underground fighting rings, for which he is infamous for his prowess and efficiency, and he uses a cane for reasons unknown to the public.

There is quite a bit of controversy over having the #1 position filled by such a dangerous and notorious criminal, but as he is noticeably above the others, the position is officially his.

#2: Guy Carnell

He/Him, 25. Gravity Alteration. Joined list in 2036.

A pompous social media influencer who primarily uses his powers to pick up hot women and get ads and sponsorships on his online accounts. Guy takes the celebrity aspect of Meta culture very seriously and considers himself the "first professional Metahuman influencer". In interviews, he tends to come off as shallow but well-meaning and very charismatic.

As the most powerful Metahuman who regularly makes public appearances, Guy functionally acts as the #1 Meta of Veda, unofficially, something he takes massive pride in.

#3: Hani Qadir

She/Her, 31. Plant Communion & Control. Joined list in 2032.

A PhD holding botanist trying to solve hunger and drought problems throughout the world. Considered one of the most benevolent and powerful Metas to ever live. Hani has spent years working toward healing the damage made by global warming to plant life and food security, as well as helping nature thrive in a changing world.

Hani comes off as a saint on television, always well-spoken, always polite, always sweet, but her friends will tell you she has the sharpest, driest wit you'll ever find. Hani keeps quiet about it, though she is often seen giggling behind a hand in interviews.

#4: June Holiday

She/Her, 15. Vector Manipulation. Joined list in 2037.

The youngest Alpha to ever be recorded, as she was ranked as such at age thirteen. June is a dorky, energetic teenage girl who wants nothing more than to be the best twin sister to her brother, Jonas, and the best girlfriend to her girlfriend, Simone, as she can be.

June is considered, by the government (Veda, Canada, UN) and by the culture of the city to be the perfect Alpha Metahuman. She exists entirely without trauma, something thought impossible of Alphas, and her powers are by far the most stable and most capable of growth. While June manages to balance this pressure most of the time, she is terrified of messing up and causing more people to hate Alphas.

#5: Sage Beaufort

They/Them, 34. Teleportation. Joined list in 2028.

The owner of a pizzeria, Sage does their best to avoid the spotlight and celebrity life that being an Alpha brings. However, Sage has never been able to stay away from people in need, and so whenever Riko calls, asking for search and rescue help, Sage gears up and heads out. It's a unique situation, as heroes are illegal, and Sage had to be authorized to work with the firefighters on a volunteer firefighter basis.

You won't find anyone more jaded by the Alpha list and Alpha hate-love culture of Veda than Sage. Sage lacks the charisma to make themself seem less scary than their powers make them look, and mostly just scowls when on camera or in public. They're a hard worker, and they want to help, but Sage has no love for Veda and stays only because it's easier than trying to run.

#6: Riko Yamamoto

She/Her, 32. Durable Constructs. Joined list in 2029.

A firefighter and a trans woman who is considered one of the closest things to a modern day superhero the world allows. Riko utilizes her ability in her work to help her firehouse be one of the most effective in the city. She and her wife are quite happy together.

Riko has been on the list for ten years and has remained near the bottom the entire time.

As she puts it, however, being on the bottom of the Alpha list still puts you at the top of the food chain and in the public eye. Riko is a working class woman with a crude sense of humour and a deep love of bar games, cheesy poetry, and making people laugh.

#7: Thad Fabulon

He/Him, 29. Psychic Puppetry & Hub Connection. Joined list in 2037.

The most famous Alpha of Veda is Thad Fabulon, who is also the only unofficial Alpha. Technically, Thad's abilities have never been recorded at Alpha levels, but they also haven't been recorded in over a decade. Based on prior knowledge of his abilities, and subsequent showcases of greater power, he is assumed an Alpha. Though it could be argued he's also in this list for safety reasons. After all, when a man like this runs a cult, you take notice.

Thad Fabulon is the founder and leader of the Chorus, an infamous cult of Metas and non-Metas alike who live and work in Veda. Thad strives to connect people, to bring people together, and to remove the burden of overwhelming pain and struggle from everyone who lets him. Or so he says, anyway. Mostly, Thad is publicly known for staying in the background, allowing his Muses to do his work for him, and making spectacles of how little the police can do to stop him.

He's a dangerous man and it was his act of pulling Fiyero Monasterio into his cult, and thus under his incredible psychic power, that cemented his status on the Alpha list.

Titles/ Level 5 Researcher - Cryptozoology Division - Insect and Vermin Division.

Strengths: Insectologist, Microbiologist, Veterinarian, Ecologist, can think of seven different things at once with clear mind and precision, is excellent at lucid dreaming allowing her to work even when she is asleep.

Weaknesses: Absolutely hates humans despite her being one, tends to disregard human life, actively avoids taking the safe and easy way, spends too much time on experimentation, easily aggravated.

Typical Appearance: African-Russian Ethnicity with dark brown skin, purple hair, and black eyes. Always wears green glasses, a green blouse with black office skirt and stockings under her lab coat.

- Doctor Daniel Wicked

Titles: Level 5 Researcher - Class H status/ Foundation Doctor of the Department of Technology, Alchemy, Science, Magic, and Warfare/ Director of Site-AD/ High Supporter of the Anomalous Employment Department.

Strengths: Extremely smart, quantum physicist, meta physicist, theoretical physicist, extreme mathematician, Immortal, abnormally strong, excellent shot, and immune to almost all anomalous effects.

Weaknesses: Good at lying but tends to get sloppy on keeping it up, bad attitude, suffers from Sarkiphobia (fear of flesh and mutations of the body leading to dysmorphic appearances), tends to kill or seriously injure people who call him by his first name, likes to go on missions that gets himself in danger or where his expertise can't be utilized, proud hypocrite, likes to manipulate people, likes to make things hard for everyone even himself.

Typical Appearance: Very Light brown skin, Mexican Canadian ethnicity, black hair and tired looking black eyes, almost always wears a medical mask over his mouth, never smiles unless someone is dying, 5.8 in height, very skinny, and always wears jeans with a black shirt and a lab coat over it all.

- Doctor Harvey Zeek

Titles: Level 5 Researcher - Class A status/ Foundation Doctor of Cryptozoology Division/ High Supporter of the Anomalous Employment Department.

Strengths: Cellular Biologist, Marine Biologist, botanist, ecologist, zoologist, cares for and can easily gain trust of humanoid anomalies.

Weaknesses: Very timid, overprotective of humanoid anomalies, tendency to come up with very bad ideas.

Typical Appearance: pale skin, Australian ethnicity, has brown hair and green eyes, smiles most of the time and carries a cheerful tone in his voice, 5.6 in height, a little muscular but barely noticeable, likes to keep up perfect hygiene, has a thinly trimmed beard, and wears the normal black pants and black shirt with white lab coat.

- Doctor Melissa Corvio

Titles: Level 5 Researcher - Class F status/ Foundation Doctor of the Fire Suppression Department, Director of the Psychology and Therapy Division/ Supporter of the Anomalous Employment Department and Ethics Commitee.

Strengths: Therapist, Truth Sayer, Great Empathy, Hypnologist, Master Manipulator, soothing voice, can always tell who is lying and who isn't.

Weaknesses: Cannot lie, extremely easy to frighten, has a tough time controlling her temper, doesn't like to eat around other people, easily distracted by tiny and cute things, and is entomophobic.

Typical Appearance: brown skin, Brazilian ethnicity, has a large floating dice for a head, no visible neck, has a beautiful voice and likes to keep up a cheerful tone, 5.2 in height, wears white gloves all the time and wears normal black pants and black blouse with white lab coat.

- Doctor Alin Tutela

Titles: Level 5 Researcher - Class B Status/ Director of the Department of Tactical Theology

Strengths: Master Historian, Theologist, Psychologist, well known for interviewing Anomalous humanoids despite hating them, good at hiding his true emotions when it matters or is needed.

Weaknesses: Short tempered, not very patient, deeply hates humanoid anomalies and outside of work is bad at hiding it, Suffers from Trypophobia.

Typical Appearance: Romanian Ethnicity, light brown hair, green eyes, tan skin, wears the usual black shirt, black pants, and lab coat as expected of Foundation researchers.

- Doctor Kai Egao

Titles: Level 5 Researcher - Class B Status/ Foundation Doctor of the Department of Technology, Alchemy, Science, Magic, and Warfare/ One of the five founders of the Foundation's Japanese division.

Strengths: Theoretical physicist, engineering, bioengineering, geneticist, meta geneticist, is ruthless, brave, doesn't let anything distract him from his work.

Weaknesses: Extremely short tempered, Has no concept of sympathy, has no concept of empathy, has no concept of mercy, has no concept of ethical thinking, is a proud Foundationist.

Typical Appearance: Pure Japanese Ethnicity, black hair, black eyes, wears glasses, typical Foundation doctor appearance of black shirt, black pants and lab coat. Never smiles.

- Site Director Nancy James

Titles: Administrative Staff - Class B Status/ Director of Site-AA/ Supporter of the Ethics Committee and the Anomalous Employment Division.

Strengths: Loves her Pikmin, loves all cute things, wants to protect humanity no matter what, is a well-respected strategist, charismatic, hates Foundationists dearly.

Weaknesses: Gets distracted easily, besides immortality refuses to allow augmentations into her body or mine, not very good at protecting herself, is reckless in her goals.

Typical Appearance: Blonde with green eyes, clear Caucasian ethnicity, wears an office suit with long pants, also likes to wear a SCP Foundation jersey her father one of the Founders made for her.

- Titles: Level 4 Researcher/ Foundation Doctor of the Department of of Universal Affairs

Strengths: Astrologist, Alien Biologist, Meta Biologist, Alien Geneticist, Alien Linguist.

- Doctor Gregory Bones

Titles: Level 4 Researcher - Class C status/ Foundation Doctor of the Department of Universal Affairs.

Strength: researcher in the afterlife, geneticist, meta biologist.

Weaknesses: Pacifist, secret Foundationist, Intense Arachnophobia, claims to be itchy almost all the time.

Typical Appearance: Charred black skin, American ethnicity, has blue eyes, has no hair due to his scalp being burnt like the rest of his body, 5.4 in height, wears typical Foundation researcher black shirt and pants with white lab coat.

- Doctor Damien Alvik

Titles: Level 4 Researcher - Class B status/ Foundation Doctor of The Remember and Forget Division/ Department of Universal Affairs.

Strengths: Immune to anomalous curses, immune to most physical attacks, isn't afraid to die, thaumaturgy researcher, memetics specialist, professional developer of new memetics, master manipulator.

Weaknesses: Holy water burns skin, can be harmed by thaumaturgy based on the Abrahamic faiths, very sadistic and manipulative, tends to shift between Ethics Committe supporter and advocating Foundationists, often manipulates anomalies to doing whatever he wants.

Typical Appearance: Caucasian skin, supposedly american ethnicity, has brown eyes that turn pitch black sometimes, orange hair, 5.6 in height, wears typical Foundation researcher black shirt and pants with white lab coat, often carries a smell of either brimstone or blood.

- Doctor Maeve Talic

Titles: Level 4 Researcher - Class C Status/ Foundation Doctor of the Fire Suppression Department, Researcher of the Psychology and Therapy Division.

Strengths: Well renowned therapist, excellent talent for evaluating other people, reading other people's emotions, often hard to read herself, can almost always accurately tell what people are going to do next.

Weaknesses: Often doesn't show enough emotion, bad at expressing herself, very emotional at times, not very strong, acts on impulse and emotions in stressful situations.

Typical Appearance: Irish-African Ethnicity,

- MTF Unit Brian Flagg

Titles: Level 4 MTF Commander/ Code Name: Monster Slayer/ Specialist of Alpha-1 "Red Right Hand"

Strengths: Extremely Brave, Greatly Values Human Life, always does what is necessary to take down an anomalous threat.

Weaknesses: Dislikes the O5 Council he works for, tends to act on impulse, has a deep desire to kill anomalies rather than contain them.

Typical Appearance: Caucasian skin, American ethnicity, has blue almost silver like eyes, black hair, 5.6 in height, wears crimson Foundation MTF armor as a sign of his Alpha-1 status.

- MTF Specialist Arjun Yadav

Titles: Level 4 MTF Commander/ Code Name: Gun Wizard/ Specialist of Hecate-Alpha "Real Magic", Division: "Oracle's Third Eye".

Strengths: Rifle expert, Talented Marksman, very adaptive to any situation, very determined to finish any mission assigned to him, is very patent regardless of the situation.

Weaknesses: Afraid of cats, can get distracted sometimes, often overestimates himself.

Typical Appearance: brown skin, Indian ethnicity, has black eyes, black hair, 5.4 in height, wears Foundation MTF armor with a purple cloak over it as a sign of his "Oracle's Third Eye" status.

- Doctor Jake Rover

Strengths: Doesn't waste time, has relatively good luck, great charisma and talent for gaining trust form others, tends to act like a father to those around him, marksman master, never misses a single shot.

Weaknesses: suffers from entomophobia, has a short temper, losses his patients very quickly, hates wasting time.

Typical Appearance: Tan Skin, Dark Brown Eyes, Green eyes, Hispanic Ethnicity, 5.8 in height. normally wears bulletproof biohazard suit as standard of MTF Lambda-12.

- Doctor Bonolo Sarma

Titles: Level 3 Researcher - Class F Status/ Researcher Department of Universal Affairs - Translation Division. Side Researcher of Department of Miscommunications.

Strengths: linguist, meta linguist, fast learner, capable of instantly translating written words, has learned the language of SCP-AJY, is fearless when facing aliens and non-humans.

Weakness: Is quite paranoid, often emotionless, doesn't talk well with humans, often talks to himself, hates the concept of fashion

Typical Appearance: dark skin, no hair, brown eyes, Zimbabwe decent, African American Ethnicity; wears grey shirt and pants designed to never get dirty and always be comfortable.

Titles: Level 3 Researcher - Class C Status/ Researcher of Artificial Intelligence Applications Division.

Strengths: Brave, immune to amnestics, good at deciphering codes even ones he has no deciphering key too, can think of seven different things at once.

Weakness: Overly sarcastic, doesn't take his tasks very seriously, often agitates those he talks too even his allies, is bad at holding conversations, not immune to memetics, good at making enemies.

Typical Appearance: red hair, brown eyes, pale skin, Scottish-American Ethnicity, often wears shirts of his favorite bands, and black pants.

thank you! i'll answer these for my character sam, who's probably the most popular and well liked of the main seven.

19. what is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

oh, the amount of meta i have written about this! sam's biggest flaw in relationships is that pretends to be good at casual relationships. he's not. this man gets attached, but then he gets scared that he's attached because what if they don't love me as much as i love them? so he backs out. he doesn't want to get hurt, so he walks away first. it's ruined every romantic relationship he's ever been in, except for one, but even that was always fleeting, always touch-and-go.

25. how quick is your character to suspect someone else? does this change if they are close with that person?

i don't think sam is a very suspicious person in general. he's intuitive, so he figures things out pretty easily. but i think he's one of those people who relies on the benefit of the doubt. that's why people like him so much.

42. has your character ever had a parental figure who was not related to them?

i'm not sure any of the other adults in sam's life are parental figures, per se, but he was always pretty close to his friend lucy's mom, mary. she understood how smart he was in a way that most adults, even his own parents (who love him! it's complicated with his mother, but she does love him!), could not.

I've really got to start posting these on tumblr so here, have some musings on if the Batfamily had (lame) superpowers.

The no Metas in Gotham rule is kind of a lie

Ok so I don't actually know much about biology or anything, but what if the Metagene wasn't so much of a you-have-it-or-you-don't thing but more of like a collection of enzymes and stuff that over a certain threshold you get superpowers. And under that threshold it’s normal baseline human.

At least that's the case if there's no outside catalyst or something. I mean how else would you explain the Flashes. Usually lab accidents like that would result in chemical burns not superspeed.

And Gotham is cursed, like legit cursed. I’m pretty sure there’s canonically a bunch of curses actually. So even though there's technically no Metas in Gotham, you get things like botanists that can control plants of their mind. And clay monsters that appeared because they were addicted to face cream (or whatever Clayface’s origin is).

Of course, not everyone's powers is that obvious. In fact, most people in Gotham have powers they don't even realize it. I mean the Joker’s survived being dunked in a vase of chemicals and simply going insane instead of melting into a pile of goo. In fact, he's had pretty much every bone in his body broken by Batman and is still running around laughing. And he's definitely not a Meta because they've checked.

I like to think that a few of the other rogues have random powers as well that they don't even realize. Like Harvey Dent was able to call the correct face of a coin flip every single time (some kind of collapse in probability thing) except after the incident Two-Face can also do it. Coin flips are now actually random so he doesn't know the outcome anymore. The original Ventriloquist probably has some minor telekinesis on his puppet. (I know the New 52 Ventriloquist has actual telekinesis so that only makes sense.) Mad Hatter’s mind control is through his technology, but no one else would have been able to figure out how to do it besides him. His hats definitely don't work quite as well for others.

And, of course, every member of the Bat Family has powers but not every member knows about it.

Batman has slight shadow manipulation. All those comic panels you see of Bruce Wayne brooding in the darkness with his shadow behind them with the pointy ears even though he's not in costume? Yeah, that actually happens. Not that he knows this since he's never seen it. And if anyone else has spotted it, it's totally something that could always be dismissed as a trick of the light. It's possible even if he realized he had this power all he could really use it for is to be a bit more dramatic when sweeping down on villains.

Alfred actually does have a power that he's aware of. He doesn't think of it as a superpower though, or a metagene. He considers it more of a gift he inherited from his grandmother.

His food heals people.

Well … kind of, not really.

People who eat food he makes don't actually heal any faster. They heal better. By this I mean the members of the bat family have far fewer scars than really should have for being in the business they've been in for as long as they have. Every single member of the bat family has been hit by so many different injuries or chemical weapons that they really should have had permanent side effects crop up by now. Honestly, they should be in chronic pain whenever the weather changes. Heck Batman broke his back, he should probably been on painkillers for life after that, but after he actually healed up he rarely even remembers it anymore. To be completely honest this is probably the most useful power the entire family has at their disposal and only Alfred knows about it.

Dick has a pretty useful power as well except he has no idea he has it.

Nightwing has featherfall.

By which I mean he has the ability to, no matter what height he falls from, slow down just enough before he hits the ground so he doesn't kill himself. A very appropriate power to have for a child of trapeze artists. But he has no idea. Anytime he's been he's fallen from a great height he's always had options to help him out. Such as grappling hooks or gliders or even a friend who can fly to catch him. It probably wouldn’t matter if he found out about it, him falling has never been his worry anyway. His nightmares are always been about other people falling.

Barbara does know about her ability and she's pretty sure she got it from her dad.

She has the ability to make sour things taste sweet. (Like what those miracle berries can do.)

But only for her, she can't do it for other people. She never brought it up but she has noticed she takes her coffee the exact same way as Commissioner Gordon. Very bitter without any sugar. Maybe she can turn this power off, otherwise there's a lot of desserts that would become incredibly cloying and sweet. Obviously, she has never mentioned this before as it is an entirely and utterly useless power to have. But she has fully bitten into a lemon to freak people out or for a bet. Tastes kind of like an orange.

Jason also has a power he knows about and considers equally useless.

He can change the colour of his hair.

What he can't change is how fast it grows. (This is obviously inspired by the comic run where he's ginger).

If he thinks of a colour he wants his hair to be before he goes to bed any amount his hair grows that night is going to be that colour. Which means if he concentrates, he can change his hair colour for however long it takes to his hair grow out. Obviously this takes a while so he usually doesn’t bother. He got a hair colour he considers his default and leaves it at that.

After he came back from the back from the dead, whether it's thanks to magic or trauma, his default hair colour now has the patch of white. He can still change the colour and the white hair actually changes a lot quicker than his regular hair, but of course it also loses it colour quicker as well. So if he's not paying attention or gets distracted by something for a while the white hair comes back. (This is my way of explaining the inconsistencies of the white streak in the comics.)

Tim has a pretty handy power but, like Dick and Bruce, he has no idea.

He is some poison/toxicity resistance.

You would think this would be something that Batman would have picked up on but every member of the bat family eventually gets that level of poison/toxicity resistance just from fighting villains with so many chemical weapons. The difference is that when the batfam build up their resistance they have access to antidotes and various things in the Bat Cave. Whereas Tim had his resistance before he came Robin. It's a good thing too, because him running around trying to take pictures of Gotham’s nightlife probably would have resulted in his death otherwise. He’s gotten a little too close to more than one Rouge attack. This is also the reason why he hasn't poisoned himself with caffeine overdose.

Stephanie has better than average night vision. She has no idea this is a power rather than just good eyesight but she has better eyesight than anyone else without equipment. It’s not see-in-total-darkness night vision but she can see more details and in colour for longer in dim light. This helped her a lot on nights when she was running around before she got access to bat stuff to help her. Of course, after that the night vision available in her mask is way better than her natural vision.

Cassandra does have a power she is aware of her but since her body language reading is so much more impressive it’s not something that’s come up. She has the power of silence. Anything under a certain noise threshold that she's making she can silence completely. It requires her ninja training first since even a whisper is too loud, but anything under that she can make it so you can't hear her no matter how good your hearing is. This does mean she is able to sneak up on people with superhearing and they can't even hear her heartbeat. Superman’s never noticed since she's too polite to do it on her allies and they have never teamed up in any situation where he would have noticed. She does use it to troll her siblings though.

Damien suspects somehow his power was given to him by his grandfather as heir to the Demon Head. He’s never asked in case he it was supposed to be more impressive than it is. He can sense large bodies of water. It means he always knows where the Lazarus pit is when it's nearby but that's not very helpful when it's always guarded and in a maze of tunnels. He can kind of sense the difference between the Lazarus pit and regular water but he's not sure he's able to tell the difference in between, say sea water and lake water. Mainly because by the time he's close enough to the sea to realize it with his power he's also already spotted seagulls and/or smelled salt in the air so he doesn't know how much of this is his natural observation skills and how much is the power. He can, if he concentrates really hard, detect water as small as in a cup. He cannot detect water in people, which he is very annoyed by because that at least would be useful. People may be 90% water but it's spread out too much for his power to kick in. The only possible practical use of this power obviously is if he's stumbling around the desert but for any other occasion it's such a mind numbingly useless power he will never bring it up.

Duke Thomas already know his powers and he actually reaches the higher threshold to be considered a metahuman, so no surprise there.

Of course, as far as everyone's concerned, he's the only member of the bat family with powers.
