Every now and then I find myself thinking, "I miss the Metrodome". Then I think, "wait what the fuck no I dont!" Because the Metrodome fucking sucked. Being there felt like you were one wrong turn away from being a casualty in a mob movie. Not even a classy one either. Like the director fancies themselves a Scorsese when they're actually a knockoff Tarantino.

Introducing the sequel to my missing Arraez hours meme, I bring you missing Polanco hours. Prompted by seeing him hit a grand slam for the first time in seven years and get the patented Mariners "grand salami time" call from the announcers.

Man, he's just. always been there. I remember bits of the Metrodome era but didn't go to games and never had any attachment to the players back then, so the purely Target Field era guys are my guys. The guys I root for day in and day out, follow their interviews and storylines, make narratives and arguments out of their statlines.

Polanco had two cups of coffee with the Twins before I knew I wasn't straight. I have no memory of his PED suspension because I was busy graduating high school. He hit for the cycle the same week I changed my undergrad major. He was the brightest of the few bright spots in the hours and hours of bad Twins baseball I watched alone in my apartment and on my laptop at work during 2021, and I remember tracking his home run total down the stretch to see if he'd break the Twins switch-hitter record. That was the year he became one of my favorites.

He's the reason I'm convinced clutch is real in baseball. I've watched the compilation of his five 2021 walkoffs countless times. He was a roller coaster to watch, but a familiar one, because for every time he had an ugly strikeout or airmailed the ball over the first baseman's head, you just knew he'd come up next at-bat and hit a no-doubter home run or a go-ahead double. He was always the easy pick for most underrated Twin, never flashy in numbers or in style. He batflipped once last year and the live chats went crazy.

It'll be weird with no Polanco around, it's only Buxton and Kepler left from that last prospect core now. End of an era. At least he went to my second favorite team, but. Man.

We're having an uncharacteristically dry December, no measureable snow yet, and my facebook account just did the "wayback" photo thing... reminding me how things could be... better. Or perhaps worse.

Yes... this was my car.

(This was the same storm that collapsed the Metrodome).

I had actually taken a bus to my part time job downtown (at Barnes & Noble), and they decided to close the store at 11 a.m. (on a Saturday). I ran across the street to Target to get supplies to bake cookies (because what else was I going to do with a suddenly free afternoon on a snowy day)... which in retrospect was a bad decision, because when I left Target, I discovered the city bus system had been shut down too, and I was stuck.

Couldn't get a cab/car to take me home... was about to just try to find a hotel room, when a friend who lived a couple miles from downtown texted me and said, "if you can make it here, you can sleep on my couch."

It took me 3 hours to walk two miles in a blizzard (and yes, that's my walking 2 miles in a blizzard story), but I got there, and then we had hot chocolate and baked cookies.

The busses started running the next day, and when I got home... this was the sight that greeted me - my car, buried up to its windows in a drift.

Harun Takamoto. Born in the McMurdo Arcology, Antarctica. Inducted in the Order of Federation Knights at a young age, and a true believer that their mission to protect the Terran Sphere is valid. His current mission shakes that conviction: pursue the renegade veteran knight Praetor Thing, allegedly engaged in piracy in the Gamma Pavonis system at the edge of the Terran Sphere. For his mission he uses his authority as a knight to commandeer the light cruiser Swiftsure, captained by Miriam Chakravarty. Born in the Zimbabwe Metrodome, Africa, Captain Chakravarty is a veteran of the recent General War, making her unpopular in the core planets of the Sphere.

Among the peoples of the Terran Sphere, a notable religion rising in popularity is the Roman Catholic Christian offshoot The Church of Death, which venerates the angel of death Azrael as a premier figure, also equated with the Mexican folk religious figure Santa Muerte. Swiftsure's only chaplain on this voyage is of this religion, and there are rumors that he is no mere priest, but an agent of a new Inquisition.

Swiftsure Communications Officer Rachel Chang, born in the Pacific Center Colony, was one of the victims of the mutated flesh-eating bacteria disaster there as a young child. As the disease ravaged her body, it was replaced piece by piece with machinery, until eventually she gave up on maintaining a human appearance and began replacing her medical prosthetics with robotic spare parts from the Machine Republic.

A century earlier, the Synthetic Independence movement triumphed over the human supremacists and the Machine Republic was born, settling on the planets of the Epsilon Eridani system as the first extrasolar member of the TerraSphere Federation. Their internal culture is hidden from outsiders, but they regularly send "mass-produced" robots to human-controlled worlds, purpose-built to apply for specific jobs. One of these is Swiftsure's Chief Medical Officer, GP-63M (Type-63 General Purpose Utility Automaton, Medical Variant) “Tacitus.” Tacitus speaks very formally, but many of the crew believe his "misunderstandings" of the nuances of human language disguise a biting wit.

Also on Swiftsure's medical staff is their only extraterrestrial crew member, the dental surgeon Dr. Zaggoth. A colony creature, that refers to themselves in plural terms, and has a difficult time with the concept of individuality.

Swiftsure's Chief Engineer is an uplifted squirrel monkey named Ikkiki Akkikki. Her kind were engineered to be more efficient space workers than humans, but in her lifetime was the Great Simian General Strike, which earned them full equal rights to humans.
