Millenium Actress - Review

Satoshi Kon is in my opinion one of the greatest directors ever, and the greatest director in Anime. His work has inspired people like Christopher Nolan and Darren Aronofsky.

I've seen all four of the films he made before his death and the tv show he directed as well. Confidently I can say that Millenium Actress is his best work.

Kon's use of graphic match cuts is absoletely next level and functions insanely well within this film in particular. At first they are confusing but soon you start to understand the way they function and the interplay between the protaganist's life and the stories she is a part of.

It uses multiple styles of animation to make each time period visually distinct from one another.

It's smart. It's funny. It's amazing.

Another thing I love about this film is the way it gives the audience exposition. It centres around the life story of an actress and the two people who come to interview her. In her flashbacks these two men show up in them and reacting to the enviroment (these scenes are some of the funniest I've seen).

It's a profoundly beautiful film and my favourite animated film of all time. If you see this come up somewhere and haven't had a chance to watch it yet, please go see it.

i watched millenium actress again for the first time in a while and realized the soundtrack during the first part of the story when she's a young girl is a take on the kind of piano music that often accompanied silent films. ok thx bye
