Ok so according to your intro you love telling the story of how you got into writing. I’m a sucker for origin stories!! The floor is yours.

Hello, friend!!

I DO absolutely love telling this story so to everyone who's already heard this a million times, apologies but I will probably never stop telling it haha

So when I was younger, I actually hated writing. Other than having to write for school, I absolutely refused to write anything despite my love for storytelling. Like I remember having to write on an entire big piece of paper for school once and at one point I wrote "sooo..." until it filled out the entire page and I could be done with it haha

Anyways, 12 y/o Elijah eventually came across The Walking Dead (the show, comics, & games) and I have no idea what happened but I had suddenly decided that not only could I write an entire zombie apocalypse story, I could write one that would rival TWD. So try I did.

Long story short, I wrote roughly 60+ pages of what was basically TWD fanfiction on pure determination alone. I actually still have access to some of it, although the entire thing is currently locked away in a password-protected Word doc on a laptop that blue screens every .2 seconds.

So yeah, basically after that I realized that writing was in fact not that terrible and here we are, 10 years later (:

(I know I got these asks a few days ago, but I’m back from my trip to San Diego now, so here we go!)

21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?

Honestly, not very much. I haven’t moved or anything. The only different thing about my room is that I have more books and a new poster from when I saw Hadestown on tour.

14. Favorite book you read this year?

Okay, this was so hard because I read a lot this year and there are quite a few books that could be contenders (anything by Donna Tartt, Wuthering Heights, the Brothers Karamazov, etc.) but I think I have to say The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I’ve read it 3 times this year already and I think about it constantly. It rewired my brain. I recommend it to everyone. I finished my second re-read just a few weeks ago and I’m already considering another… it’s so great. (I also wrote a fic for it, shameless plug to any tsh fans 👀)

1. Song of the year?

My top Spotify wrapped song was ‘Achilles Come Down’ by Gang of Youths so I guess it’s that one? Which really gives you insight into my brain this whole year but also always ✌️

Final Thoughts On 2023

I know I have a very dysfunctional sense of time, but this year seems extra short and long to me. But such is the way it goes. Vague recap time!

Shut Down published! I went to my first therapy session. I toured apartments with my roommate. I traveled for the first time with just a friend. I got to meet the voice actors for The Animaniacs Pinky and The Brain. I celebrated my first Aro week. I wrote my first pilot episode. I got on TikTok for class and ended up not hating it. I volunteered to help at an student Oscar event and for student plays. I lost my best friend. I finally joined my school's writing club. My parents accidentally read my poetry collection and loved it. I moved into my very own apartment. I went on a family vacation to New York and got to see my almost little sister for the first time in 4 years. I hosted my very first book signing! I published Reprogrammed. I learned how to live by myself. I took a pottery class. I started a movie script. I let go of my best friend for good. I became the secretary for the writing club. I found a little bit more of myself in my fashion sense. I hosted a Halloween party. I met the producer of Me Before You. I made more friends and learned how best to love some of my others.

And in what has been one of the greatest decisions I've ever made, I stayed incredibly active on this lovely site and I got to meet, know, and love all of you. You guys are my diary and my joke book and a safe place for everything I am and love. I can be 100% myself on here without a single worry and you guys will never understand what that means to me.

My love list will just have to continue to grow, but that's okay. I love each and every one of you and I cannot wait to spend another year alongside you. Happy New Year! 🥂

The Prince in Yellow

450 words

“He knows of you.”

An incline of the other’s head, a gesture that meant nothing to Niel, neophyte he was to the Court. The figure lounging on the plush yellow fabric drummed slender, glittering fingers. In the light streaming from the windows nearby, the masked figure, draped in gold, shone as his father did. The son of the King, beautiful, terrible, spoke.

“Does he?” the Prince said. Something inside Niel shivered. 

“He mentioned you by name,” Niel said. “I’m not sure how he knows all this, but I’m trying to figure it out. You know - I don’t think he’s a spy or something but, he… Nobody normal should know about any of this.”

The Prince shifted, rolled over onto his stomach. Niel tried very hard not to look at the body revealed beneath the fabric, the jeweled piercings and delicate chains accenting that divine body. Maybe he should’ve tried harder. The eyes beneath the mask shone with amusement.

“You’re right,” the Prince said, kicking his upright legs in the air. “He must have previous experience with the Court - and that could be trouble.” A hand propped up his chin. “This friend of yours is trouble, isn’t he? But not to us.”

Niel shifted. “O’Tipp wants him dead,” he admitted. “And in Arkham, when he wants a man dead, that man won’t have the time to write up his will. He rules that place, everywhere, except for the University.”

“And you’d come this far to save your friend’s life.”

“A little king,” the Prince said, voice heavy with his smile, “A man who thinks he can rule without consequences.”

The Prince reached out and picked up the goblet on the table between them.

Niel breathed.

“Lazarus is a good man,” he said. “At least, that’s what I thought. He helped me get my job. I never wanted him dead. I want him safe. But if he’s a runaway from the Court, or a spy, or a traitor-”

“That isn’t something for you to worry about,” the Prince said, shifting. His legs crossed as he pushed himself upright. Lifting up the mask, Niel glimpsed human lips opening, and closing, as the liquid of the goblet flowed into the Prince’s throat. The mask settled in place again. “A human being, living or dead, is a better offering than I expected you to make.”

The goblet set down with a thud.

“I accept it.”

Niel jolted. The Prince raised his head, the long hair streaming down over his mask. His eyes locked with Niel’s, and the world began to sway, with fear, with relief.

“He doesn’t know it yet,” the Prince said, “But whether he be traitor or pet, Lazarus Core will be mine.”

Following my last OC Questionaire post with Rachel, Cameron, and Elaine, I will be answering this one with another set of 3 OCs from Legacy of the Fallen.

1. Have you changed much since you were a child?

Ben: "Some say I have, but I don't really think so."

Amber: snorts without amusement. "My childhood changed me. I may not have understood everything that was happening around me, but no one is the same person after seeing your home and people destroyed."

Ryan: "No, not really. I'm just a little more stressed out, but I was already an idiot who didn't know when to shut up." Shrugs.

2. What do you deserve?

Ben: "Nothing." He avoids eye contact, his fingers gripping each other uncomfortably. "That probably sounds bad, but it's all just too much. I don't deserve any of it."

Amber: "No one deserves anything, you earn everything you get. Are you asking for what I think I should have? If so, then I think that we all deserve to have a home that we can finally feel safe in. It's really not all that spectacular."

Ryan: "I deserve a medal; being alive and existing is worth the recognition of great honor. Wait- you think I'm serious? No! In lieu of a medal, I deserve that delicious sandwich you brought with you. Do you mind?"

3. Can you cook?

Ben: "Kind of; some things better than others. Rachel sometimes has me make eggs for her."

Amber: "Of course, I cook all my own meals. Call me paranoid if you want to, but I don't like other people messing with my food."

Ryan: "Depends on your definition of cooking. Sure, I can put something on a stove and cook it, but I can't guarantee that you won't end up in the medical center after eating it. The good news is that I'm a better healer than a cook, so you'll be fine afterward."

She couldn’t stop yet. She pushed more energy into her legs, a soft groan escaping her lips. She felt dizzy and sick but she forced herself to sprint across the rooftops before the men could follow her from below. She didn’t slow until Karza was little more than a smudge in the distance behind her. Once she finally stopped to catch her breath, Her legs wobbled and her stomach heaved with dry retches. Sharp pain shot through her head as she pulled her channeling into her vision and hearing, scanning the open landscape for any sign of pursuers. There was nothing. Once her breathing returned to normal she poured her channeling into her legs again. Her muscles burned in protest as she forced herself into a steady pace.

When he leans in, breath hot against the skin, he smells of cigars and whiskey, a cool bitter cologne no one else in town uses. Where he walks, death is not far behind. He holds the city in his palm and sometimes, he squeezes until it bleeds. Arkham’s homegrown villain - even if he doesn’t admit it, he could only come from here. He sits in a leather chair in his fancy suits, his fedora on his desk beside his rows of expensive black pens. He sits in his office with the shades down, with maps on the walls, maps of the city, the county, the country, the world… and maps of places that don’t exist, couldn’t exist. Right? With a face made for Hollywood, a voice born for the talkies, he plans, debating the fates of his enemies, the destiny of his conquests, the birth of new enterprises in the unsteady raw stage of the world. He sees the signs that no one else does. He sees change before it arrives. Little surprises him. When something does, it never has the chance again. He is possessive over his property, most of all the two young souls who dared challenge him, most of all the ghost of the man who got away. He hates, he schemes, maybe, even loves. But he smiles for sure. He smiles and his flesh stretches, strains, as something horrible shifts to the surface. Most cannot identify it, but all can sense it. The inhumanity in this shell of a man. The ancient evil that is of his own design. No, he is not from Arkham, but he has chosen it for his own, and he will damn any who challenges him to fates horrific and unimaginable. No, he is not human, that criminal, that mobster, Nathan O’Tipp, but oh, he loves humanity. He adores them all, and their antfarm of Earth, so, so much.
