Gaslighting isn’t the same as lying.

Gaslighting also isn’t lying a lot, or lying and deflecting the lying by shaming the victim for not believing the lie.

Gaslighting is a long con. It is a practice of ongoing emotional/mental abuse, that doesn’t just involve lying, but manipulating or altering someone’s reality in order to make them question both the truth, and more importantly, question their own mental and cognitive wellbeing.

The reason that it’s called gaslighting is because the tactic was demonstrated in a 1944 film called “Gaslight” starring Ingrid Bergman. In the film, Bergman‘s character’s husband tries to make her have a mental breakdown.

He tells her that she is having blackouts (she’s not) and doing things that she didn’t do.

He steals things from her, and tells her that she lost them herself.

He makes noises in the attic of the house, then tells her that he wasn’t in the house at all.

He steals things from other people, puts them where she will find them, and then tells her that she stole them.

He puts his pocket watch in her purse and tells her that she stole it from him.

He isolates her from the world by telling her that her behavior is too erratic to be safe near others.

He encourages their housemaid to be cruel to her and to repeat his lies about her behavior.

And, to apply the title, he repeatedly causes the gas lighting (it’s set in 1875) in her bedroom to go dim, then comes into the room, and when she says that the lighting is dim, he says, no, it’s perfectly fine.

It goes well beyond just lying. Gaslighting is a setup to make the victim so confused that they’re unable to trust themselves and their own perceptions of the world around them or even themselves.

It’s beyond time to stop calling run of the mill dishonesty gaslighting.

it is a mockery of justice that resources of legal system are consumed by petitions in the name of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) when the Supreme Court is facing escalating pendency of cases where the personal liberty of the person is involved and have legitimate expectation of early justice. Now is being brazenly misused to seek publicity or to settle business and political rivalry.

The spirit behind public interest petition was that a citizen may approach the court to ventilate grievance of a person or class of persons who are unable to pursue their rights.

A PIL was filed by a Law student Harsh Gupta from Agra under Article 32 of the Constitution of India seeking to abolish “male” pronouns in the Constitution of India. The matter was heard by a Division Bench of Hon’ble Mr. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud J and Hon’ble Mr. Justice PS Narasimha J. Under the garb of right to equality the petitioner intended to get the word ‘male’ abolished in the Constitution. The Constitution uses the word Chairman now Chairperson but that does not mean a woman can’t be appointed.

The PIL was dismissed with the observation of the Hon’ble Apex Court, ‘ we are not inclined to entertain such petition under Article 32 of the Constitution pf India.’

a lot of the time, abusers are just regular people. abuse is something we're all capable of - it's a pattern of harmful behavior in which there's power imbalance. we all hold various privileges, connections, and knowledge that can be turned into the power to abuse others. we can all exert our will, thoughts, feelings, etc. onto others in a way that hurts them and takes power away from them.

abusive people have done something horrible and inexcusable, yet they aren't... inherently special. they're people, capable of choosing between right and wrong, capable of change, just as much as others are. i say this in part because i think a lot of people have this lofty idea of abusers that leads them to think they couldn't possibly be a victim of abuse. but abuse can be incredibly mundane - and this also means we all have to watch out for abusive behaviors in ourselves.

abuse isn't just something Obviously Bad People (TM) are capable of... and abuse isn't caused by mental illness, substance use/addiction, gender, etc. etc., even if these things impact what happens. idk. there's no real end point to this post. i just wish people didn't mystify abuse, and realized how (deeply unfortunately) normal and subtle it can be... and often is.

IDEAS NEEDED FOR THE 'MISUSED' SERIES

Y’all, I need help coming up with ideas for the rest of my ‘Misused’ series. I have 5 characters left (Mike, Marco, Armin, Erwin, and Reiner) but I’m having a really hard time writing for any of them. I’ve got some details already planned out, like ages of the characters and a few other things, but I desperately need help with the core ideas. What would you guys like to see for each character? Here are a few details (but not enough to spoil) for each below:

Mike: Both are in college

Marco: Song fic, both are college age but not in school

Armin: Both are in college

Erwin: Both are adults (out of college)

Reiner: Both are in high school

It really is a shame that Ghost so rarely takes his mask off outside, because he’s made to be seen in the sun, Soap thinks. Privately, quietly.

It’s not his fault Simon has cheekbones like he was sculpted by a loving god. A nose with a broken bump that catches the light just so. Eyelashes that fan over his cheeks as he squints a little from the brightness.

That one’s a particular shame, because his eyes can look red midday, and amber right at dusk; but when he squints he gets this little furrow in his brow. That’s compensation enough for hiding those eyes, since Soap isn’t normally deprived of them.

Sun makes him look healthier, puts some color in his pale cheeks. Soap would bet money that he’d freckle given the time. He’s comforted some by the soft moles speckled on his face, but that’s another kind of torment.

Anytime he sees a hint of them—or really, one particular mark right at the corner of Ghost’s jaw—he wants to reach out and graze them. Feel the blood in his skin, under his own two palms.

Soap resigns himself to looking, and occasionally sketching. It makes him itch for color. He wants to capture it Ghost, in his golden, healthy, human glory.

Maybe it’s better though, to stay in grayscale. ‘Makes the real sight that much more precious.
