Bloody Roar Monthly Fan Prompts #1
This is officially the Beast Drive blog's first attempt at stirring up some community creativity in the Bloody Roar zone on tumblr. Because the fanspace here is pretty quiet I thought starting off with monthlies to avoid clogging up the tags would be a good idea.
If you're interested in Bloody Roar and want to participate, read on!
Read more about Beast Drive's community activities.
How to Participate
Everyone interested is welcomed and encouraged to contribute!
These prompt responses are due by August 31st
You can respond to any/all prompts!
You can make multiple entries for the same prompt, if you want to focus on different things in each response.
You can submit entries by reblogging this post, making a submission through this blog, or using the respective @beastdrive / #beastdrive notifications and clearly marking the prompt.
There's no real restrictions or heavy guidelines on how you're supposed to engage with these prompts but, loosely:
Meta Analysis prompts are intended for "out of character" thinking and discussions about the lore or world of Bloody Roar.
Scene Setting prompts are meant to help inspire more character focused analysis, headcanons, visual art and other works.
Dynamic Drabble prompts are supposed to get the gears turning on some sort of fanfiction one-shot based on the provided theme.
The point of these prompts is simply to get more engagement within the Bloody Roar fanspace. You do not need to submit polished work here, just share what you thought about or wanted to make!
You're always welcomed and encouraged to continue work on anything you submit if you want to keep running with your ideas.
August 2023 Prompts
Meta Analysis
Aquarium Stages: Pick an aquarium arena from one of the games and think about what environmental storytelling you can pick up from the design and background details.
Scene Setting
Health & Fitness: What sports, recreation, or healthcare activities do you imagine the characters doing in their spare time? Do they follow along with any professional sports? Think about how their fighting styles compliment each character's personalities and showcase how they move says so much about their attitude or approach to life.
Dynamic Drabble
Word Count Range: 500 - 1000
"Rejoice as summer should... chase away sorrows by living."
- Melissa Marr, Darkest Mercy
Remember, this is just for fun! There is NO PRIZE, so do as much or as little as you want. And please consider posting your written works to AO3 and/or FFN to give the Bloody Roar categories some love.
If you have any questions, the askbox is open!

Gleem by Freddy Carrasco
The steely coolness of humanity,
the loneliness of the masses
and the comfort found in solitude.
It blinds and reveals, hurts and heals.

You know. It would've been cool if the Alpine Shepherd theme was ACTUALLY based off traditional Alpine shepherds, because from what I can find they were NOT what look like woolen knitted cozygirl fits. We could've had some really cool items with what look to be dried grass jackets and traditional vests (which would've given a chance for more masc clothing!!). The accents are cute but they look ENTIRELY from a different region if they're even based on one, which would've been fine if it was dubbed as such.
The designs overall don't bother me, but what does is the horrible naming because 'oooo alps are mountains yeah i can make this up heehee sheep that aren't even sheep they're cows but they actually look like dogs <3' WRONG. Folk nerds.
Just. Just name it as Bovine Shepherd and not Alpine Shepherd if you really want to draw weird little dog cows and aren't actually going to base it off the region style clothing please </3

One! Hundred! Demons! by Lynda Barry
So I started this blog specifically to talk about some of the comics and other pop-media I'm reading since I recently got back into Batman-centric comics and old cartoons (who knows how long this will last 😅 i tend to get pretty pissed about that side of the industry and how convoluted everything is with the big 2 and there is so much more to comics than superhero stuff), but I really do love all comics so once a month I want to pick a comic I like that isn't well known in pop culture/"fandom" and maybe do something during international zine month in July?
One! Hundred! Demons! Is this really beautiful, raw, funny, tragic graphic memoir by Lynda Barry. She is incredibly well loved by cartoonists everywhere, but it's one of those things where people outside of comics spaces don't really know about her? She has this quality to her work where it feels as though you are invited into her memories to experience this line between truth and fiction. It lends itself well to the reality of how memory and trauma operate - it is imperfect and influenced by our emotions. Arguably, trauma is our inability to remember cohesively while the body carries our private pain.
Lynda Barry, inspired by a sixteenth century Zen monk painting of a hundred demons chasing each other across a long scroll, has turned various demons from her life into a series of vignettes. The way she draws them, almost garishly, is reminiscent of the pacing in news strips. Every spread is 4 panels with hand inked text taking up most of the visual real estate. There is a roughness to how she draws which is also present in how she talks about her memories. There is such a strong commitment to convey the everyday or "mundane" traumas that occur through normal conversations. It does not seek to "teach a lesson" or sensationalize her experiences. Rather, a meditative exercise in remembering. The vignettes show us cruel mothers, freaky boyfriends, and undeniably Filipino-American life! If you can't tell, I really love Lynda Barry's work and One! Hundred! Demons! is a great place to start if you are looking to read something outside of your comfort zone! She also includes a mini exercise at the end of the book for you, the reader, to draw your own demons.
