Marusa no Onna
In February of 1987, the movie Marusa no Onna (in English, A Taxing Woman), directed by Juzo Itami, was released in Japan. The movie portrays a National Tax Agency bureaucrat and her investigations into businesses doing tax evasion. With its great direction and satirical humor, it became a hit in Japan. It reached number four in distribution revenues among Japanese films for that year and dominated the 1987’s Japan Academy Film Prize, winning six out of seven of its major awards, including Best Work, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Capcom released Marusa no Onna in September 1989, being the company’s second game adaptation of a movie for the Famicom (the first was Willow, that same year). The film’s director, Juzo Itami, worked as a producer for the game. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, director known for his contributions to the Japanese horror movie scene, was also credited with helping with the project. Capcom regular Tokuro Fujiwara was the director. The three of them also worked together on the RPG Sweet Home, which was released just three months after Marusa no Onna. One of Sweet Home’s screenwriters, credited as PROBIT, also served as the sole screenwriter for Marusa no Onna’s game. Although Marusa no Onna remained largely forgotten throughout the years, Sweet Home went on to be recognized as a precursor of the survival horror genre and served as the main inspiration for Resident Evil.

Why aren’t movie tie-in games, especially those that are a story adaptation to the movie’s story they’re loosely based on, really a common thing anymore since the beginning of the last decade?
Tumblr media
It's mostly because mobile devices became the platform du jour to publish movie tie-in games and other similar shovelware-style titles. Development costs are lower, turnaround time is faster, expectations are lower, and audiences are larger on mobile, so it makes sense that licensors would go there.
Tumblr media
In addition to the rise of mobile, the relationship between a movie tie-in console game's development cycle and the movie itself was already fraying in the mid to late 2000s. Back when AAA games could be developed by a fairly small (< 50 people) team in a year or less, it made a lot of sense to develop tie-in games alongside movies that also took around a year to film and produce. However, by the PS3/X360 era movies hadn't really changed their production time, but AAA games were taking 2-3 years to complete. Those two time frames are essentially incongruous. Combine that with the rapidly escalating production budgets due to the increase of team sizes and the economics of a movie tie-in game weren't really that profitable anymore. Something had to give eventually, so the transition to mobile as the platform of choice should make a lot of sense.

honestly the way enstars popularity could skyrocket even more if it had more bite-sized adaptations (shorter but with a more in-depth exploration of different stories)

Shrek SuperSlam
In generations past, a fairly common sort of licensed game would be a take on Capcom’s often-forgotten Power Stone. These games often had a lot in common – two to four fighters allowed to move freely through a three-dimensional area, picking up and using various weapons to KO the other fighters first, and mechanics that focused more on enjoyable chaos than true depth. Shrek Superslam meets all these criteria admirably, and yet something strange happened – people started taking it seriously. Well, somewhat – it was never going to reach Evo in a hundred years, but a small presence for the game began examining it more closely. Unfortunately, whatever community there was for the game dispersed some time ago, as there simply wasn’t enough there to work with.

So, what is the OGL and why are DnD creators thoroughly screwed?
Tumblr has not been doing a great job at talking about this, but:
With OneDnD, Wizards of the Coast has decided to update the Open Game License (OGL). Said license is what allowed people to create homebrew DnD content and sell it, and even larger companies to use certain sorts of content. Pathfinder, for example, is built on said OGL. This also allows streamers and artists to exist and benefit from said content.
With OneDnD (sometimes called “dnd 6e”), WOTC wants to create a much more restrictive OGL, which will, amongst other things:
Make WOTC take a cut for any DnD-related work (according to Kickstarter, a whole 25% of the benefits)
Let WOTC cancel any project related to DnD up to their discretion
Let WOTC take ANY content made based on their system, and re-sell it without crediting you, or giving you a single cent
And most importantly, revoke the old OGL, which will harm any company or game system that used it as a base, such as Pathfinder. And it means they GET ownership over any homebrew content you may have done for 5e in the past!
It’s important to note that OGLs are supposedly irrevocable. They were planning to use it for OneDnD initially, but they want to apply it retroactively to 5e, somehow. Which is illegal, but lawyers have mentioned there’s a chance they may get away with it given the wording.
Tumblr media
This means that anything you make based on DnD (A homebrew item? A character drawing? Even music, according to them?), can get taken and used as they deem appropiate.
These news come from a leak of the OGL, which have been confirmed by multiple reputable sources (including Kickstarter, which has confirmed that WOTC already talked with them about this), and was planned to be released next week.
So, what can we do?
Speak against it. Share the word. Reblog this post. Let people know. Tumblr hasn’t been talking much about this matter, but it’s VERY important to let people know about what is WOTC bringing.
Boycott them. Do not buy their products. Do not buy games with their IP. Do not watch their movie. CANCEL your DnD Beyond subscription. (Btw, they ARE planning to release more subscription services too!). They do not care about the community, but they care about the money. Make sure to speak through it.
And maybe consider other TTRPG systems for the time being, Pathfinder’s Paizo has been much nicer to the community, their workers are unionized and are far more healthy overall
