my hsmtmts hot takes:

(im going to be stoned for this i know it)

i did not care about rina in the slightest until season 4

seblos (as a ship/couple) is just sort of...there for me. i have no big feelings towards or against them. they're definitely cute, they just don't stay on my mind

though i loved the fashion upgrade that came with it, i hated the way kourtney was written in season 4

i don't care about madlyn that much. (i also don't like call it what you want all that much)

season 4's hsm3 songs were not done well (save for can i have this dance, high school musical (the finale) and dani's high school musical, and now or never (auditions) the mixing was bad, they had dara sing too high for i want it all and the singing itself just wasn't that good

^i loved most of the original songs tho

they should've never brought in any of the original hsm actors (save for kaycee and lucas in s1) they made a corbin a twisted version of himself in s3 and the rest of the actors in s4 were so overhyped just for them to barely be there

i actually liked portwell together. they both seemed so happy and i will never forgive the writers for building them up just to ruin them in s3

^speaking of s3 portwell, i will also never forgive this fandom for treating ej like he was some old man preying on a child and treating him like the villain (this is a rant by itself so we'll tackle that some other time)

i've never liked nini (or rini)

the rina hat only works because they got together in the end. imagine if a friend put a secret love confession in a gift for you and you find it after both of you get with someone else. i just find it weird to do that sort of thing when you don't even know if there's mutual feelings

i was on ricky's side during most of the rini discourse (save for him going behind nini's back and getting her a part when she didn't want one)

while i love both jennzzara and jetney, both of them were quickly thrown together at the end with hints that there were crushes in the air for both of them

i will forever hate that they chose frozen as s3's musical. the only songs i liked were what do you know about love and love is an open door

for a show about students putting on a musical, they really just did not show a lot of the musicals

^for s2, i've been giving them a pass because it was during the first year of covid so they were probably limiting how long people could be dancing around without masks (but i was still robbed of belle's yellow dress on ashlyn and ej and biggie playing gaston and lefou)

and finally, this show pairs people up so fast with no real development for either the people or the couple itself. the show really could've benefited from growing their characters without a relationship being the driving force and then worked on building romantic relationships once they figured out what to do with each character

So I watched the final season of Hsmtmts and it was, in my opinion, the best one yet. The characters were all developed brilliantly (my favourites being EJ and Mr Mazzara as usual, but I loved them all) and I almost wish there were more seasons even though I'm glad that it ended on the high it did. I'm going to miss the wildcats but I'm so glad I found this little theatre show and followed it through to the end!

here's my take on potential spin offs or any other reunions we could potentially get in the future that nobody asked for:

first and foremost, and i'm sorry if it sounds biased, but the #1 spin off that i'd want to see would be a spin off about kourtney's life at lewis college written/developed by nneka gerstle. the reason why i believe kourtney deserves a spin off the most is because not only was she only supposed to be a one episode character in the beginning, but as a black girl who also deals with anxiety among other things, she was one of the most relatable characters on the show to me—not to mention her talent is out of this world and a show completely devoted to her would be the perfect platform to showcase that without her having to spend her story in the background of someone else's bigger story. also, i don't think there's a black college show that also involves music in an important way that's on tv right now, and i just think the possibilities are endless for a show revolving around her.

the second spin off sounds more likely if tim had a say in things, but i could definitely see a spin off starring emmy as the lead with miss jenn, mr. mazzara, and dani in supporting roles along with new cast members. i also think it'd be the perfect opportunity to bring back alex as one of the new students since emmy was able to upgrade her role from season 3. admittedly, i don't see myself being as enthusiastic for this spin off because of my attachment to the original cast, but it could be cute to see them make appearances from time to time and also see if there would be any parallels from the past show. they wouldn't be able to do the same hsm format plot, which i guess would defeat the purpose or whatever. but even naming the show East High or just having it set in the same universe would be cool to me.

anyways the third and final option i'd watch is a full length movie with the original cast as a final farewell to the show. i am biased enough to admit that it'd be cool for it to be a rina wedding, but even a jennzara wedding would be entertaining. the plot could be literally anything and i'd just think it'd be cool to see the cast back together in something well written for the future.

Do they watch supernatural? Hsmtmts edition

For the purposes of this. I’ll be listing if they watch supernatural and what they like about it. There will definitely be some of my Patented Unpopular Opinions. So please consider this your first and only warning. Everybody got that? Good. Then let’s begin.

Rina. Gina has caught some of supernatural. She’s not a huge fan. She prefers the Lucifer show. Ricky’s obsessed with supernatural though. His favourite episodes are I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Third Man. Needless to say he’s a massive Sam fan. And he gets incredibly angry when Sam’s mistreated.

Seblos. Carlos is certainly aware of supernatural. But he’s not necessarily a fan exactly. When he watches it he bemoans the wardrobe and fighting choreography. He finds all the angels creepy. Seb likes the show well enough. But he’s still trying to figure out the family tree from Once Upon A Time. So episodes like Changing Channels and Dog Dean Afternoon tend to fry his brain.

Redlyn. They both watch supernatural for the lore. And for Sam. And for both versions of Ruby. And for Jody Mills. Big Red knows who got Ricky and Seb into the show but he’ll never tell anyone who it is. No matter how many times Ashlyn asks him.

Jetney. They both watch supernatural. Jet loves the car. Kourtney spends all her time dragging Dean for filth. They both like Sam though. And no. Jet doesn’t know who introduced Ricky and Seb. He does, however, have his suspicions.

Ej. He watches supernatural. He just wants the car. And he’s jealous of Sam’s sideburns. He’s a little freaked out by the brother’s codependency. But he’d take that whole situation over the corpse any day of the week.

Emmy. She would love to watch supernatural. But her parents have forbade until she’s fifteen. She wants to watch it purely because she knows that Dean Forester from Gilmore Girls is in it. That is literally the only reason she wants to watch it. Nothing more. Nothing less. Well. She likes to think about the violence. But mostly it’s because she knows that Dean from Gilmore Girls is in it.

Jennzzara. Mrs Mazzara has banned Miss Jenn from watching supernatural in his presence because she keeps complaining about how they kept turning her down when she auditioned for the, ahem, “coveted” role of Unnamed Corpse Number 20 all the way back in 2007. Mr Mazzara doesn’t watch supernatural. Never had. Never will. He prefers Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Maddox. She LOVES supernatural. However, she is a giant Charlie Bradbury fan. But hey. Nobody’s perfect, after all. Plus, she’s also the one who introduced the show to Ricky and Seb. Nobody except for Big Red knows yet, though. She lives in ever-so-mild terror that Gina and Carlos will find out before she’s got her defence ready. Big Red has sworn not to rat her out, though. And she’s grateful for that.

Labyrinth ft. Portwell

Gina was laughing along to a stupid joke Carlos had made about Seb’s choice of attire to their high school graduation party. Ashlyn had volunteered to host it (as usual) and thankfully most of the theater gang was able to make it. Big Red was local, Kourtney had come home for the summer, and Nini was visiting Salt Lake to pick up a couple of her things before moving to LA permanently. And Ricky, well after their unfortunate breakup the summer after he graduated, Gina really hadn’t heard from him. and if she hadn’t been in contact with Ricky, then she didn’t really know how to describe her relationship with EJ. For they hadn’t spoken since he had left for his Disney+ internship after the chaotic shallow lake summer they had.

So it was quite the surprise when he came through Ashlyn’s doorway with a bright smile on his face, greeting Ashlyn with a warm hug as she squealed in surprise.

“Elton John?” Carlos exclaimed, a smile breaking through on his face.

The others turned their attention to EJ, all bursting with a chorus of “how are you?’s” and “it’s been too long!”

EJ bashfully made his way through them all, congratulating the new graduates.

“Congrats, bro” he winked at Carlos before wrapping him in a warm hug.

Seb looked at him with bright eyes, “EJ you didn’t tell us you were going to be here!” he looked at Ashlyn expectantly.

“Don’t look at me! I didn’t know either!” she shrugged as EJ threw his rather muscular arm around her shoulder.

“What? A guy can’t surprise his cousin just for fun?” He laughed before his piercing green eyes met Gina’s. It was then she just realized that she hadn’t taken her eyes off him since he’d stepped foot through the door. There he was, her first boyfriend, somehow looking even more handsome than he did two years ago. LA had definitely treated him well, she thought to herself.

EJ cautiously made his way towards her with a warm smile on his face.

“Congratulations Gina”

He engulfed her in a tight hug as she stiffened. She recognized the smell of his cologne, it was the same one she had gotten him for his birthday back when they were dating. She slowly relaxed into the hug, smiling slightly as she missed the feeling of being in EJ’s arms.

uh oh, i’m falling in love

EJ broke away from the hug with a smile on his face, slowly walking away to greet Ashlyn’s parents.

Gina looked on after him with a distant smile on her face.

“You good, girl?” Kourtney whispered as she noticed Gina looking at EJ.

oh no, i’m falling in love again

Gina’s gaze on EJ lingered for a bit, as he was laughing at something Ashlyn’s dad said.

“Hmm? What did you say?”

Kourtney looked at her curiously, a slight smirk on her face, “Oh just that i love that blush you have on.”

Gina looked at her confused, “What do you mean? I don’t have blush on-“

She stopped herself, her eyes widening slightly as Kourtney winked at her before going to grab a drink.

oh, i’m falling in love

And as Gina narrowed her eyes at Kourtney trying to regain her composure, EJ brushed past her trying to grab his phone, and her shoulder tingled at the slightest touch of his arm.

“Oh i’m sorry Gi”

She blinked at him as he turned around. This was going to be one hell of a night.

Best TV show ever (Real). Literally need to rewatch it because it's so good!

Gina Porter as Rapunzel: She is such a Rapunzel. Gina has such a heart of gold and is so fiercely loyal to those around her. Also, imagine her singing The Girl Who Has Everything??? Omg??? This is her role.

Ricky Bowen as Eugene FitzHerbert: Ricky is such a Eugene. He's hilarious, charming, wins over everyone's hearts, and is such a supportive boyfriend like Eugene is to Rapunzel. Also, the chemistry between him and Gina would be INSANE.

Ashlyn Caswell as Cassandra: Yes, this may seem like an unexpected choice, but I think Ashlyn would be incredible as Cassandra. She can be snarky, witty and sarcastic on the outside, but deeply cares about the ones she loves on the inside. The bickering between her and Ricky would kill me too.

Seb Matthew-Smith as Varian: LITERALLY THE MOST PRECIOUS CHARACTERS IN THE WORLD. Seb is such a Varian and I am not just saying this because Varian was voiced by Jeremy Jordan... who also originated Jack Kelly in Newsies, but Seb would nail the misunderstood antagonist who redeems himself in S3. IMAGINE HIM SINGING LET ME MAKE YOU PROUD? NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WITH ASHLYN? READY AS I'LL EVER BE? TRUST ME ON THIS, OKAY?

Jet as Lance Strongbow: Lance was hard to cast but I ultimately went with Jet. This is because just like Lance, Jet did come off as arrogant at first but once his walls were torn down, he was easygoing and a true softie at heart. Also, the bond between him and Ricky would be immaculate.

Mr. Mazzara and Miss Jenn as King Frederic and Queen Adrianna: The true parents of HSMTMTS. These two just care about their wildcat children deeply, just like how Adrianna and Frederic care about Rapunzel.

Emmy and Alex as Keira (Angry) and Catalina (Red): The youngest on HSMTMTS will be playing the children on TTS. Their bond would just be so pure just like how they played Young Elsa and Young Anna in Frozen.

Lily as Zhan Tiri: Do I even need to explain? DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN? LILY IS ZHAN TIRI PERIOD.

Antoine/Andy as Andrew: Shady boys who appear charming at first but are actually deceitful and have ulterior intentions. Listen, I know that Antoine/Andy is now "redeemed", but he's playing Andrew no matter what.

EJ Caswell as The Captain of the Guards: Beefing with Ricky just like how the Captain beefs with Eugene. He also gets to play Ashlyn's dad and he would LOVE getting to boss her around.

Big Red as Shorty: Clueless kings who are supportive to the ones they love and are quite loyal... we don't talk about S4 Big Red, okay? My man is loyal and not whatever they did to him in S4.

Kourtney Greene as Adira: I didn't know what to do with her, but she does have that fierceness that Adira has.

Maddox as Vex (S2): The no-nonsense attitude that Vex has reminds me of Maddox, especially regarding Maddox's attitude towards following the rules and stage management.

Carlos Rodriguez as Xavier: I don't really know anyone for Carlos. Maybe he would be a great Eugene?

Might drop my Criminal Minds cast list next, then Ride the Cyclone.
