Day 30: Caught
Tickletober 2023 - RELIC by Maz Maddox - (takes place post King & Queen) - lee!Baja
[see my other tickletober 2023 fics]
[read on AO3]
A/N: Shout out to this series for being fucking adorable. [see my other fic for it]
Words: 1.1k
“Fuck off, Dalton!”
“Come onnnnnn~”
“Try anything—” Baja glares his brother down, that apex predator authority in his eye. “—and I will use you as a toothpick.”
“You’re just mad you’re ticklish.”
“Shut the fuck up, would you?” Baja growled.
“Oooooohhhhh.” Dalton grinned, his face suddenly full of knowing.
Baja was familiar with that look. “No.”
“He doesn’t know?!”
“No. And you are not going to—”
Dalton’s eyes were sparkling. They flicked to the door behind his brother.
Baja clocked it right away. “Don’t you FUCKING dare—DALTON!”
Footfalls thundered through the ranch as Dalton tore outside as fast as he could. Simon, cup of coffee in hand, paused just in time to miss being ran over by a pink blur and—just a few steps behind, a darker blur radiating annoyance. They flew past him, tearing through the doorway. A couch and coffee table made a meager defense from Baja, separating him and Dalton so both could catch their breath. They both twitched this way and that, testing the other to see if the other would bolt.
“Jeez, you guys are gonna tear this place apart..” Blaze winced, eyeing them and slowly backing up into the hallway he’d emerged from. He backed straight into Royal, who smiled down at him.
“Something wrong with breakfast in the living room?” He asked thoughtfully.
“No, it’s—”
“Jackson doesn’t know that Baja’s ticklish!!!!!!!!!” Dalton bellowed. “He’s gonna kill me but I have to tell him!”
“Shut your fucking mouth!” Baja hissed, growing impatient and stepping over the coffee table to launch himself over the couch at his brother.
“Oh shit.” Royal grinned.
Before Blaze knew it, he was holding Royal’s plate, and his boyfriend, who had a long history as Dalton’s partner in crime, was tearing past him into the living room.
“No.” Baja’s face flashed with worry. “Not you too.”
“That’s too precious! Come onnnnnnn. We have to tell him.” Royal made a grab for Baja who kicked him away and started in the direction of Dalton.
“Or show him.” Dalton smirked.
“I love the way you think.” Royal beamed.
“I hate both of you, and I’m going to kill you if you—”
As if on cue, Jackson walked into the living area, taking in the arguing shifters. “Uh, hey—”
Baja’s eyes wide, he tore off past Jackson and right out the door, leaving him confused —and almost run over by his two pursuers.
“What? Um.” Jackson chuckled, confused.
“Come on!” Royal called back at him as he raced after Baja.
Dalton added. “Got something to show ya!”
“No they don’t!” Baja yelled back. Was that…laughter edging into Baja’s voice?
Jackson blinked, thoroughly convinced, and gave curious chase to the rest of them. His long stride helped him catch up with ease, just as Dalton caught up to Baja and jumped onto his back. Baja let out a resounding growl, scrambling to get him off.
Seconds later, Royal was on him too, and he knew he was screwed.
“No, you fuckers! I’ll- I’ll kill you!” Baja argued as they wrestled him down against the ground and got ahold of his arms. Royal sat over his waist while Dalton struggled with his arms.
“Aww, it’s been way too long since we’ve done this!” Dalton smirked, wiggling his fingers.
Jackson caught up to them a few seconds later, watching with an amused curiosity. “Just what are y’all—” He paused when he saw Baja biting back a grin and tilted his head. He watched as Dalton sat on both of Baja’s arms and then started… poking and lightly grazing his fingers over the now uncovered armpits.
The last of Baja’s resolve crumpled along with his expression. Jackson could only watch with a growing smile.
Royal’s laugh rumbled in like thunder, reverberating through him as Baja’s legs kicked in protest behind him. He started to pinch lightly up and down Baja’s sides.
Baja growled, fighting the grin that slowly grew on his face. When he wasn’t making some noise of annoyed protest, he was holding his breath to keep in his laughter.
Jackson squatted down beside the brothers. “You’re ticklish?” He asked, amused.
Baja slammed his head back against the ground and cut off the laugh that almost escaped as a whine. “No.” He gritted his teeth.
Royal and Dalton shared a laugh. “I dunno… Seem pret-ty ticklish to me, Baja.” Dalton teased, poking a finger into his rib cage. Baja jolted under each touch.
“Well if you’re going to be stubborn…” Royal sighed with amusement. He reached behind him with one hand — Baja’s eyes widened as he recognized what was about to happen — and then started to squeeze at his upper thigh.
Baja’s shout dissolved into the most sweet, bubbling laughter.
“There we go!” Dalton smiled down at him. “Doesn’t that feel better?”
Baja shut his eyes, his cheeks growing a bit darker, and failed to keep in any of the laughter he had been trying to fight. It was impossible with the floodgates open. Royal was fighting dirty, going after one of his worst spots.
Jackson laughed along with them and reached out to pinch at Baja’s rib cage, resulting in an adorable flinch.
With laughter freely pouring from Baja’s lips, Royal turned his attention back where he could see, poking and scribbling and tickling at the shaking middle in front of him. He and Dalton tickled with a familiarity, it seemed, of all the spots that made Baja jump and snort and twitch and yell. They even seemed to find a few that, if pushed a little further, might even make him beg.
“Easy, don’t kill him now..” Jackson reminded them. He reached out to brush a few stray hairs out of Baja’s face as the boys slowed their tickly attack. “I have to say, though, this is some of the best news I’ve heard all summer —maybe in my life.”
Baja groaned, catching his breath as his brothers gave him a pat on the cheek and got up off of him.
“You’re both… fucking dead… I hope you know.” Baja scolded when he had the ability to look at them without grinning like an idiot. Royal and Dalton held up their hands, backing up toward the house before turning and running. “And you.” He pointed at Jackson.
“What?” Jackson scoffed, laughing.
Baja had a familiar annoyed anger in his eyes. He let out a frustrated growl. “You… weren’t supposed to see that.” He sighed, sitting up and running a hand over his face. “Don’t even fucking think about—”
Jackson cut him off with a laugh. “Oh, Darlin’, you know I’m never lettin’ this go.”
Baja rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Until I find out where you’re ticklish.”
Jackson smiled, reaching out a hand to help him up. “Looking forward to seeing you try.”

Check out the Hoof & Fang podcast with Kirt Graves and Maz Maddox!
Quick correction re: some historical facts. The Labouchere Amendment did not raise the age of consent for males to twenty-one; I got it mixed up with the Sexual Offences Act of 1967, which decriminalised consensual homosexual acts in private by men over twenty-one.

“That sounds dangerous…” Lance fidgeted. “Wouldn’t it be better to handle this before he—”
“They,” Xiang corrected. “I’m too prehistoric for genders.”
There was a long pause while Lance tried to decipher Xiang’s tone.
“I can’t tell if you’re joking.”
“I’m not. You can use ‘your majesty’ if ‘they’ is too complicated.”

Smash & Grab (RELIC #1) by Maz Maddox
I was haphazardly scrolling through the list of books on Romance Bookworms for the September 2023 Stuff Your Kindle Day when I found this gem. I immediately told my friend I was going to read it.
It's an MxM Shifter Romance, but the shifter happens to be a dinosaur. I admit, I was a little scared at first, considering the last Dino book I read was Wet Hot Allosaurus Summer by Lola Faust... and if you know... you know...
The cover of the book (I know we aren't supposed to judge, but I've noticed some cover trends while looking through Stuff Your Kindle Day books sooo...) is beautiful. It's simple, but it definitely captures the fact that there is a punk rock vibe going on.
How much of it did I read? : 110% (there's even a nice little bonus story on the author's website
I will 100% be reading more from this series, and the author... I'm just going to put more of a dent in my weird reading quest first.
P.S. I squealed every time I read the words 'Pretty Simon'.
Also the author has an awesome website

“I feel like mid-thirties is a little late in the game for a sexual awakening,” I mumbled.
“Sexuality isn’t on a time scale,” Dalton said around a yawn. “Maybe you needed thirty-something years to realize you liked dick. Who cares? You’ve waded into the rainbow waters. Stick around a while and enjoy yourself.”

Day 7: Flustered
Tickletober 2023 - RELIC - Smash & Grab - lee!Simon
[see my other tickletober 2023 fics]
[read on AO3]
A/N: I am going to inflict my recently read cute sweet weird little dinosaur shapeshifting punk x paleontologist romance novels upon you. (Youuuuu should read Smash & Grab by Maz Maddox. It’s narrated excellently by Kirt Graves and reads like a fanfiction in a novel. Also there’s some dinosaur animorphers lmao. The book is 1st person POV that switches between the main characters so I decided to try my hand at it.) Me over here changing up how one of the scenes played out - adding some tickles, classic. Enjoy.
Words: 1.1k
SIMON
What the hell? Within a few days my world had shifted and flipped upside down, and now, if the being-on-the-run damsel-in-distress role wasn’t enough, my forced traveling companion slash savior slash crush had just climbed into bed with me. Arms wrapped around my middle and I jumped, hissing out, “Dalton.”
“I’m cold, won’t you cuddle with me?” Dalton mused, pulling his body closer to mine under the covers. Damn this one bed safehouse.
“No- what? I- I’m going to sleep!” I argued - it sounded better in my head. “Get off!”
“Come onnnnn.” Dalton sing-songed. His hands pulled me closer to him and wrapped around my middle. He squeezed a little where his hands rested along my sides.
I knew I was in trouble when my mind caught up a few seconds later and realized the loud, squeaking sound that suddenly lit up the room had come from me.
“Oh… Simon.” His voice sounded honey-sweet. Why did it also sound so scary?
Fingers curled against my left side, scribbling curiously. Shit. What the fuck was this guy doing?! I snarled - well, I tried to, but it came out a little breathless. “W-What the fuck do you think you’re doing!?”
There was a snort in reply. “What do you think I’m doing?”
And then the hands wrapped around me from behind wiggled against the same spot again, this time on both sides. Shit. It really fucking tickled. Already. Shit. I swallowed a nervous lump in my throat along with the laughter starting to bubble up in my gut. I knew he could feel me tense and squirm with how fucking close he was lying to me.
“D-Dalton..” I tried to wiggle forward, out of his embrace that I wasn’t entirely sure yet if I wanted out of, and nearly got to the edge of the mattress.
“Heh. Ticklish? That’s pretty damn cute, Sugarbear.” Dalton’s smirk came through clearly in his tone. He chased after me with a few wriggles of his own and then nuzzled into my neck. Tingles shot down my spine as I gasped in a breath - I could feel the burn of a laugh trying to escape.
“No-” It came out as a wheeze, and I couldn’t hold back the laughter any longer as Dalton kept squeezing at my damn sides. “Ahaha n-nohohoho don’t! Wait- heheh wait!” I tried to shake my head just as little bubbles of laughter started to climb their way out.
“Don’t wait?” He teased. “Okay.” And then his hands started squeezing at my hips and I buckled forward, almost lurching off the bed.
“Nohoho- hehehee Dahahhalton! C-Cut it out!” I reached wildly toward his hands on instinct, trying to grab his wrists and pry them away. All I really managed was to hold on to them as he began tickling up and down the length of my sides. God, it- it didn’t do anything to deter him. He was… much stronger than me - which I did not have the mental energy to think about right now. In fact, I was quickly losing the mental energy to think about anything.
DALTON
Be still my beating fucking heart. This sexy, handsome, adorable, nerdy paleontologist- he was going to be the death of me. I nuzzled in against the side of his neck to get a little closer to those adorable little giggles - and to try and catch a glimpse of that smile of his.
“You have the cutest fucking laugh.” I teased as Simon grabbed onto my wrists. I pushed my nose gently into the skin behind his ear. I kissed there too, and felt his back shiver. “Fucking adorable.”
“Dalton! C-Cut it out!” Simon cried out, joy evident on his face and in his voice. His legs started to kick, sometimes knocking against my own legs. I wrangled my leg around to secure over his thighs, keeping still enough to wiggle but not kick.
“Cut what out? The tickling?” I wiggled my fingers up toward his lower ribs, earning a cackle. “Or the teasing?” I grinned. I placed all ten finger tips against his sides through the shirt he wore - his little sliver of protection. Then I spider-walked them in front to his stomach.
Simon shrieked and started squirming harder. His hands gave up on grabbing mine and instead moved to try and block as much of his belly as possible. It was cute. Everything he did was cute.
Simon’s cheeks nearly matched my hair as he giggled and squirmed. I whispered more teases and musings and compliments, and Simon’s pretty pink started turning red.
“Hey.” I patted his shoulder as he sighed and caught his breath.  “Now I know a great way to pass the time while we’re waiting things out in this safehouse.”
Simon let out a tired little giggle at that.
“You… Pink menace.” He accused with no venom, smiling as he closed his eyes.
“You’re pretty damn pink yourself right now.” I smirked. Simon grumbled in response before I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him in close to be my little spoon. My cute, ticklish, dorky little spoon. Simon came willingly, tuckered out from laughing so hard.
Maybe another night, he might even seek out a little revenge? I remembered the feeling from several romantic encounters- the electricity of it, the bubbly lightness afterward. It was an interesting sensation to say the least, mammals were interesting - especially these strange hairless apes.
I stopped thinking about it too hard and refocused on Simon’s slowing breath in front of me. I nuzzled into his neck again, feeling him tense up a bit.
“Heh- no- no more tickling- I’m exhausted.” Another tired laugh.
“Yes, yes, but we can cuddle?” I asked, wondering genuinely, but also enjoying teasing him a little.
Simon let out a quiet little sound of distress. He sounded a bit tormented when he said, “Yeah, well, I guess we- we already are so..”
I hummed and answered, “Goodnight, Sugarbear,” as I felt him slowly relax into my arms. Butterflies danced in my stomach as though I had just been the one to be made kicking and giggling.

Review: Find the Jinn (Wilde Contracts #1) by Maz Maddox
Review: Find the Jinn (Wilde Contracts #1) by Maz Maddox
Rating: 4.5🌈 Maz Maddox’s latest book in their new series is a great bit of dark storytelling. Told in first person perspective by a assassin/ fish trainer who hunts vampires on the side, we know immediately that the universe is a off kilter one. Dangerous, filled with beings of all types running a metropolis that swings from swanky to crime ridden and hopeless. Drugs, sex, business as…
