Day 6
My next stop was just a few hours north, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Unfortunately, they were all booked up for camping, so I stayed at the local KOA, which consists of a bunch of people sitting outside their camper, watching you. I booked here specifically because they had a pool, which is really great physical therapy for most people with a connective tissue disorder. So far on this trip, my health has held up generally well; I definitely can attribute being able to do this at all to a medication I got on in May. For the last few years, I have been on any number of pain medicines and have had absolutely none of them be affective whatsoever (I’m lookin’ at you, emergency room morphine!) I may as well have been eating Smarties. This isn’t all together uncommon with hEDS/HSD; most people either have absorbency/metabolism issues that render certain medicines useless, and/or they are prescribed ineffective medicines because a lot of doctors know very little about it. This medicine that’s made a world of difference for me, unfortunately has some draw backs/side effects that can be devastating at times. In fact, just a few weeks ago they landed me in the emergency room where they told me I had a viral infection in my abdomen or bowels and couldn’t do anything about it. It wasn’t for another week my PCP casually and easily knew it was a side effect of my new meds. Honestly, I can’t get off of them at this point. This trip wouldn’t be possible. Do you choose evil or some evil?
Tumblr media
So, these few days of the trip have been like Fear and Loathing in Colorado; driving around poppin’ anti-diarrheal and pain meds, swerving around suicidal marmots. Black Canyon of the Gunnison surprised me – it is stunning! Deep and dark, it’s narrow at the bottom, jagged throughout, and wide at the top. The sound of the river from the rim is impressive knowing you’re thousands of feet above it. The walls fall an average of 95 feet per mile, meaning at the bottom, where the Gunnison River cuts through creating the canyon, the walls at The Narrows are only 40 feet wide. This dramatic canyon is a hidden gem of the park service. I heard a ranger say she hopes it stay that way, and I couldn’t agree more.
Tumblr media
Shout out to Ranger Randy, who I spoke with for a while. He’s worked at over 20 parks in his time and was just as friendly as can be. I love meeting a ranger who really, truly cares about what they do. With Randy, I earned my Junior Ranger Badge!
Tumblr media
This one is dedicated to Husband, who doesn’t like to be on the internet. We are coming up on our anniversary of 20 years together, 15 years married. He has unabashedly supported my fundraiser; in fact, pretty much unabashedly supports everything I do (except that time he didn’t think I could build a full blown Skeksis Halloween costume from The Dark Crystal in 21 days. Ha, proved ya wrong, buuuuddy. Don’t tell me what I can’t do!). So, thanks for being the very best thing in the world and being the most massive support through this rocky chronic illness journey I’ve been on. I literally couldn’t have done it without you.
I did a few hikes to various over looks, but it was getting hot so I couldn’t do longer hikes. Heat intolerance is a real jerk. But the views were amazing!
Since I couldn’t do any long hikes in the heat, I decided to head to the Museum of the Mountain West down the road, outside of the park. When Richard Fike was just 4 years old, he collected his first memorabilia; a clock which you can see at the museum. When he was only 8, he opened his first museum in his parent’s guest room.
Tumblr media
He continued gathering artifacts as he became an archeologist focusing on items excavated from outhouses. This was interesting because I’ve studied the Wild West and the Victorian Age a lot as an author, and I never considered how people threw things away; I assumed they burned them, but many just through stuff into the outhouse pit.
Tumblr media
His extreme and unmatched dedication to collecting is beyond evident in his museum, founded in 1997. The indoor portion is impeccable; a collection like nothing I’ve seen, and painstakingly detailed in its exhibition. I’ve always wanted a pair of Victorian shoes, and I suppose I’ve never been able to find any because Fike has them all in his museum.
Tumblr media
There is a massive outdoor portion akin to Old Trail Town and Four Mile Town, though of higher quality. The saloon is a standout room, as well as the house.
Thanks to modern medicine, I decided I should try to get one more Junior Ranger badge in at Curecanti National Recreation Area, east of the canyon. The Gunnison River cuts through creating manmade lakes backed by painted desert hills and pinnacles. The ranger there was the opposite of Ranger Randy, and my badge will have to be mailed to me.
Tumblr media
Preemptively, I dedicate this badge we can’t quite see yet to the donors who have chosen to remain anonymous. You may be strangers, you may be people close to me that I love dearly, but you have really accounted for so much of my total so far. Thank you, for your kindness that goes silent through the wires. The Ehlers-Danlos Society recently made a $400,000 donation to fund the genetic research for hEDS. When I saw that, that’s when I knew I wanted to try to raise funds for them somehow; to be a part of the most historic move for this condition. There are 13 types of EDS, and Hypermobile type (hEDS/HSD) is the ONLY one without an understood genetic marker. This research, being done in the Carolina’s, has cracked the edge of the code for the first time in history. This means with more funding and research the genetic markers can be found to detect it as early as in the womb. People will not have to wait 50 years for a diagnosis anymore! So, anonymous donors, your money is SO important to reducing future suffering.
Thank you, everyone. Talk to you soon,
Haylan

October 4, 1927: Work begins on Mount Rushmore
"On October 4, 1927, sculpting begins on the face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. It would take another 12 years for the granite images of four of America’s most revered presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt—to be completed.
The monument was the brainchild of a South Dakota historian named Doane Robinson, who was looking for a way to attract more tourists to his state. He hired a sculptor named Gutzon Borglum to carve the faces into the mountain. The Lakota Sioux people, who consider the Black Hills to be sacred ground, strongly opposed the project. The mountain was previously part of the Great Sioux Reservation before being taken away from them by the U.S. government.
According to the National Park Service, the first face to be chiseled was George Washington’s; Borglum first sculpted the head as an egg shape, his features added later. Thomas Jefferson’s image was originally fashioned in the space to the right of Washington, but, within two years, the face was badly cracked. Workers had to blast the sculpture off the mountain using dynamite. Borglum then started over with Jefferson situated on the left side of Washington.
Washington’s face was the first to be completed in 1934. Jefferson’s was dedicated in 1936—with then-president Franklin Roosevelt in attendance—and Lincoln’s was completed a year later. In 1939, Teddy Roosevelt’s face was completed. The project, which cost $1 million, was funded primarily by the federal government.
Borglum continued to touch up his work at Mount Rushmore until he died suddenly in 1941. Borglum had originally hoped to also carve a series of inscriptions into the mountain, outlining the history of the United States."

Iron Age and Roman Artifacts Found in Wales
Metal detectorist Ian Porter unearthed sixteen historical artifacts in a boggy field on Anglesey. Among the items found were Iron Age chariot fittings, a metal ram’s head, and a Roman copper ingot, and offer a window into the island’s rich past during the Iron Age and Roman times.
Ian Porter made the discovery on March 4, 2020, while metal detecting in a field under pasture in the Llanfair-Mathafarn-Eithaf Community.
The unusual bronze, copper, and lead artifacts are believed to have been gifted as repeated religious offerings around an ancient sacred spring source during the Late Iron Age and into the Romano-British period.
The additional artifacts, all of Roman date, include a decorated brooch, four coins, and a lead pot repair. A large and complete Roman copper ingot weighing 20.5kg was also discovered, probably smelted copper deriving from the nearby Roman copper mine at Parys Mountain.
Tumblr media
The chariot fittings, cavalry harness pieces, and brooch were all placed around AD 50-120, around the time of, or soon after the invasion of the island by the Roman army in AD 60/61.
The coins and other artifacts suggest a continuing practice of votive gifting around the spring throughout the Roman period, the latest coin in the group being struck around AD 364-378.
Adam Gwilt from Amgueddfa Cymru, Museum Wales, emphasized the role of these finds in understanding ancient religious ceremonies against a backdrop of conflict and change.
Gwilt said: “This culturally mixed artifact group, containing both Iron Age chariot fittings and Roman cavalry fittings, is an important new find for the island.
Tumblr media
Artifacts were declared treasure by the senior coroner for north-west Wales. They provide unique insights into the cultural and religious practices on Anglesey, an island of significant historical importance during the Roman invasion of Britain.
The presence of Iron Age and Roman artifacts near the sacred spring indicates a blending of cultures and traditions, emphasizing the complex relationship between native inhabitants and Roman invaders. This discovery sheds light on the religious significance of watery sites, which were frequently used for offerings during times of upheaval.
“The ram’s head fitting, probably a vehicle-fitting or staff head is decorated in the late Celtic art style. It is a closely observed and quirky depiction of the ram and a likely future ‘star’ exhibit loved by many for Oriel Môn,” Gwilt added.

pairing: hannibal x gn!reader, will x gn!reader, bedelia x gn!reader
warnings: none, just fluff! suggestive content if you squint
hannibal lecter
summer’s not his favourite season, it’s way too hot for a his liking, but he enjoys it nevertheless
coat lazily draped over his shoulder, the sleeves of the shirt tucked meticulously just under the elbows, exposing the veiny forearms, slightly drenched in sweat and musky perfume
he would invite you for evening walks in downtown vienna, explaining every bit of the astonishing architecture
he loves your curiosity, how you find beauty in all things around, your eyes seem to bring out the best in everything that’s around
dark narrow streets of cobblestone feel safe with his arm around your waist
night museum tours!
stargazing through the glass walls of pyramide du louvre
as he goes on about the meaning of each constellation his eyes always come back to you, the center of his night sky, his universe
he can’t draw ever his gaze away from your awestruck face
the night walks never seem to end, the city’s like a mythological labirynth hannibal creates with his never-ending tales
in the end you forget about everything and just follow him into the dark
will graham
he’s an outdoorsy guy and every extra hour of sunlight is the best gift for him
would take you backpacking in the mountains
weeks of astounding views, piece and quiet, just birds and stars keeping you company
you talk for hours, sometimes just savour the silence around you
he’s prepared for everything: rain? he has two raincoats in your favourite colour. craving a home-cooked meal? will has a tourist cooker and all necessary ingredients. and when you’re cold at night, he drapes a warm blanket over both of you, enveloping you in a loving, almost too hot, embrace
if you’re not into survival stuff so much, you could just go see the waterfalls during the weekend and roast some marshmallows over the fireplace in the comfort of your own home
he loves your summer tan!
you would go sunbathing to the nearby lake and spend the afternoon reading books on the pier
and in the evening you would rent a boat and cruise into the setting sun, scaring all the swans with your laughter
bedelia du maurier
i can see her yachting as soon as the ice melts in the bay
would take you on trips along the west coast, visiting every city and village you see
you would discover new dishes and experiment with new drinks
sometimes you would stay the night on the coast, enjoy the nightlife until the sun rises
every day is an adventure with her
prosecco and reading philosophy essays
would definitely splurge on sundresses and silk headscarfs
everywhere you go, people seem to think of her as some aristocracy of sorts
she enjoys the attention and uses it to get anything you want
the world’s your oyster

Anubis Deity Guide
Tumblr media
Who is Anubis?
Depicted as a being with the body of a man and the head of a jackal, Anubis is the Egyptian god of the dead. He is also the god of mummification, lost souls, and the helpless. Anubis is one of the oldest gods of ancient Egypt and was possibly derived from the older jackal god Wepwawet, as the two are often conflated.
Due to his role as god of the dead and afterlife, he also held domain over justice and has been depicted holding scales to determine the “weight” of the person’s soul.
Parents and Siblings
Ra (his father originally)
Hesat (mother)
Bastet (sometimes referred to as his mother)
Osiris (his father in later stories)
Isis (his mother in later stories)
Horus (brother)
Babi (brother)
Sopdet (sister)
Wepwawet (brother)
Bata (brother)
Lovers or Partners

Khentyamentiu - Foremost of the Westerners
He Who Is in the Place of Embalming
Guardian of the Scales
Notes
The name “Anubis” is the Greek form of the Egyptian name “Anpu” which means to decay.
The Greeks associated Anubis with Hermes, the Greek god who guided the dead to the afterlife. The two would be joined together to create Hermanubis, making him more accessible to non-Egyptians.
He was also worshiped in Greece on the island of Delos.
Anubis was said to be the creator of embalming.
His epithet “god of the westerners” means “god of the dead” as the Egyptian term for departed souls was “westerners”. This was because it was said that the afterlife was towards the west, the direction of the sunset.
Anubis was often depicted as a black Jackal or other canine or as a human with the head of a black jackal/canine. The black coloring was likely a nod to the discoloration of a dead body as well as the fertile silt of the Nile.
Anubis was regularly invoked for protection as well as vengeance.
The center of Anubis’ cult was set in Cynopolis, or “the city of the dog” but there were shrines sprinkled throughout all of Egypt.
There is a place that was known as Anubeion, where a shrine and a cemetery of mummified dogs and jackals were discovered east of Saqqara.
Originally Anubis’ father was Ra, though as Osiris gained popularity Anubis’ story got mixed up and he became the son of Osiris and Nephthys. In this later story, Nephthys tricked Osiris into having sex with her and became pregnant with Anubis who she soon abandoned for fear that her husband, Set, would find out about the affair. Osiris’ wife, Isis, found Anubis and adopted him.
In other stories, Anubis was said to be the son of Set or Bastet.

In the world of ancient pyramids, it seems like there’s always a race to the past. Are the oldest ones in Egypt? Peru? It’s been up for debate since about 2001. But now, there’s a new contender in the historic who’s-who of pyramids: Indonesia.
A team of archaeologists, geologists, and geophysicists recently published a paper in Archaeological Prospection suggesting that Gunung Padang in the Cianjur District of the West Java Province is not actually the naturally occurring hill that everyone thought it was. Instead, they say it’s actually an ancient man-made structure. Previously, Gunung Padang referred only to the megalithic stone complex that sat on top of the hill, which some archaeologists believe was used as a celestial calendar (though the actual use is still unknown). But the team’s research shows that the entire structure—complex and hill itself—was sculpted by humans beginning about 25,000 years ago.
Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, Ph.D, an earthquake geologist and one of the co-authors of the paper, says he “stumbled upon a small hill with a peculiar shape and a surprisingly well-preserved surface” in 2011, while examining the area’s topography.
“This hill stood in stark contrast to the rugged, highly eroded mountainous terrains typical of the Tertiary volcanic regions in its vicinity,” he says.
That discovery sparked several years of research by Hilman Natawidjaja, who gathered multidisciplinary researchers to use ground-penetrating radar and 2D electrical resistivity tomography to explore the site. By 2014, the team knew they had a massive discovery on their hands.
From the inside out, Gunung Padang is constructed in four parts. The first and oldest is in the middle, a natural lava hill from a dead volcano, sculpted by humans into a pyramidal shape. The next portion is made of coarse sands and pillar-like structures, followed by another layer of columnar rocks, and finally the megalithic stones on the surface layer, all meticulously placed and layered by hand.
The published paper was the first full discussion of their findings, and it included details surrounding the exact procedure they used to date the sections of the pyramid they discovered.
“We must not overlook the equally compelling and profound journey to understanding our own history.”
“We are optimistic that our findings will inspire further geo-archaeological studies, as we know many other large, ancient structural treasures in Indonesia and worldwide that remain unexplored and undated by geochronological methods,” Hilman Natawidjaja says. “Surprisingly, even Indonesia's most renowned ancient sites, including the iconic Borobudur temple, lack precise dating.”
He hopes as well that the new methods of exploration—the radar and tomography, as well as a multidisciplinary approach with multiple scientists—could be helpful in accurately dating other ancient structures, like the moai on Easter Island and the Nan Madol complex in Micronesia.
“Despite the human quest to unravel the mysteries of the universe and search for extraterrestrial life, we must not overlook the equally compelling and profound journey to understanding our own history,” Hilman Natawidjaja says. “Much remains unknown and unexplored, waiting for us to uncover its secrets.”
That all being said, the paper is still causing some controversy in the scientific community, some of whom are calling for more research than what’s already been done in order to fully verify the claims.
“The dates are somewhat controversial but seem to be solid,” says Dan Joyce, Director Emeritus and Archaeologist at the Kenosha Museum Campus in Wisconsin. “To better understand… the age of the site, independent investigations concentrating on radiocarbon dates and repetition of results is needed. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary, replicable evidence.”
For his part, Hilman Natawidjaja welcomes the controversy.
“We fully anticipate our study's results will be met with scepticisms and questions from scientists and scholars worldwide,” he says. “Nevertheless, we welcome the opportunity to engage in discussions and further studies… Our quest for knowledge should lead to enlightenment and unity, not division.”

Qingxi Culture and History Museum UAD
Located in Nanshangang, Sangzhou Town, Ninghai County, Zhejiang, the project is positioned as a small cultural and tourism building that integrates a tourist center and spaces for displaying and experiencing the local history and culture. The site is far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with only one country road connecting several villages nearby. And there are local villagers working in fields around the site every now and then.

For Decades, No One Knew About Congress's Secret Apocalypse Bunker In The Mountains Of West Virginia.
Tumblr media
White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is home to one of the most elite resorts in the United States: The Greenbrier. The resort has hosted numerous congressional meetings, 27 presidents, and has been around since 1778.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, underneath the resort sat a government secret so well kept that, up until 1992, its existence was only known to a handful of people. Look at the subterfuge.
Tumblr media
In the 1950s, the Cold War threatened Nuclear Disaster. Bunkers, were where important people (or whomever could afford to build such a shelter), could take refuge in case of nuclear war, were all the rage.
Tumblr media
So, you can tell from the above photo that it’s under here.  Pres. Eisenhower picked Greenbrier as the perfect location. It was far enough from Washington D.C. to avoid a direct hit from an atomic bomb, but close enough that Congress could get there in about 5 hours.
Tumblr media
The 153-room bunker would be able to house about 1,000 people — that's more than enough beds for the 535 members of Congress. Each bed was assigned specifically to a person- there was no room for extras, so family would have to be left behind.
Tumblr media
For 30 yrs. it was continually restocked with 6 mos. of supplies.
Tumblr media
It was also where Congress could meet w/a communications center outfitted with microphones.
Tumblr media
Part of the ingenious plan to disguise the bunker was, paradoxically, to reveal it. So, it had offices and even the people who worked there had no idea. Locals were getting suspicious, though. They were asking why there was a 7,000 ft. landing strip for a town with 3,000 people.
Tumblr media
People were noticing things, the Cold War was over, and lips got loose. Even though they were asked not to, the Washington Post, in a 1992 tell-all article and follow-up, outed the bunker, so it was opened to the public and you can tour it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An expensive secret bunker could look bad for Congress and when the news broke, they thought Congress would be mad b/c they didn’t even know about the bunker in the first place. So after the bunker's secrets were revealed, the government shut it down, and it now serves as a museum and data storage facility.

Hathor, patroness of the west, who is represented as a cow emerging from the western mountain at Thebes into the clumps of papyrus that fringe the Nile Valley. She wears around her neck the pendulum shaped counterpoise and loosely strung bead rows of a 'menyet' collar. The 'menyet' collar provides source of sound when shaken and particularly associated with the goddess' worship. Between her horns are a sun-disc and tall plumes. Yamagata in southern Tohoku is known for natural beauty, impressive skiing, and hot springs. The prefecture is enclosed by the Sea of Japan to the west and mountains to the east, with port cities along the coast and secluded skiing and hot springs in the mountains. The mountain temple of Yamadera (or Risshakuji) was visited by the famous poet Basho and is the subject of one of the most famous haiku poems in Japan. The spectacular snow-covered trees in the mountainous areas are referred to as "snow monsters." The prefecture also produces 70% of Japan's cherries.

Yamadera (also known as Risshakuji) is a scenic temple located in the mountains to the northeast of Yamagata City. The temple grounds extend high up a steep mountainside, from where there are great views down onto the valley. The temple was founded in 860 (during the Heian Period) as a temple of the Tendai sect under the official name Risshakuji. Its popular name, Yamadera, literally means "mountain temple." At the time of the founding, the area in Yamagata was at the northernmost national border.
Yamadera is also known for a visit in the late 1600s by the famous poet Basho, who composed one of his most famous haiku there. A statue of Basho and a rock inscription of his famous poem can be found in the lower area of the temple grounds. South of Yamadera and the train station there stands a museum dedicated to Basho that focuses on his trip to northern Japan. The main hall, Konponchudo Hall, is the oldest hall in the temple and houses a flame that is said to have been brought from Enryakuji in Kyoto and to have continued burning since the foundation of Yamadera.
A 30-minute hike up a stone path of 1000 steps that leads up the mountainside goes to the upper area of the temple grounds. There is a massive Mida Hora rock, shaped like Amida Buddha, at the top of the stone path, and past Niomon Gate is an open area with spectacular views into the valley. Past several of the temple buildings there are more stairs that lead up to the Godaido Hall, an observation deck with the best views onto the valley below. The building dates back to the early 1700s and extends out over the cliff.
Regional Cuisine - 郷土料理
Akebi (fruit of the Chocolate Vine) - アケビ(木通)
Tumblr media
Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini - Flora Japonica
The translucent white flesh with tiny black seeds inside of the akebi purple pod is eaten as fruit. It is relatively unknown that the purple pod can be cooked and eaten as well, but like a vegetable, not a fruit. Traditionally, akebi was viewed as a wild fruit that country kids plucked and ate from vines in Tohoku while playing in the mountains. As people became interested in discovering new and interesting culinary sensations, a variety of akebi that could be cultivated was developed about 20 years ago, centered in Yamagata prefecture. In Tohoku traditional akebi recipes did exist; the fruit was mixed with salt to pickle cucumber and was said to increase the sweetness (although akebi itself is not sweet), while the pod was stuffed, sauteed and deep fried.
In Akita Prefecture an herbal oil medicine was produced from the akebi seeds, but this is not a common practice. Interestingly, recent scientific research has shown the akebi to have antiseptic properties and to be a diuretic. Traditionally in Yamagata Prefecture, people believed that the spirits of ancestors returned to this world for Obon on a ship made of the akebi pod and offered akebi on the family Buddhist altar.
Akebi is in season for just two weeks or so in early autumn, and can be found in upscale grocery stores and specialty fruit boutiques. This makes it a rare delicacy.

Which are the most beautiful places in Greece? Aside from mykono and santorini which are beautiful but they are the obvious answer 😉
First, let me tell you what isn’t. Mykonos is generally not among the most beautiful places in Greece. It might come off as a surprise to foreign people but you don’t go to Mykonos because of its beauty. You go for the jet set / celebrity vibes. That’s not to say it isn’t beautiful or that you wouldn’t love it if you went there - it has gorgeous settlements and nice beaches - but compared to other places I wouldn’t even rank it in the top 25, let alone top 2.
Santorini is another case. It’s one of a kind, not only in Greece but worldwide too. But even that can’t guarantee one will definitely like it. For example, my dad can name almost 10 islands he likes more than Santorini, which seems insane to me, but beauty is a very subjective matter.
Which is why I have trouble coming up with an answer for you. There are so many things that make a place beautiful. How can I objectively compare coastal and mountainous regions or beautiful towns or other peculiar attractions (outstanding landscapes or major historical/ cultural regions)? It depends on what everybody prefers. As I’ve said before, Greece’s strong card is that it is more or less everywhere beautiful. You have to make a really odd touristic choice to land on a truly plain place.
The only thing I can do is find the best regarding specific types of beauty. The rankings are in no particular order.
Best beaches and coastal regions:
Mostly found in the Heptanese (Ionian) islands and the Epirote coast opposite them [1], Chalcidice [2], Mount Pelion, the Sporades islands and Euboea island [3], Crete island [4], the Dodecanese islands [5], the South Peloponnese [6], Samos island [7], Thasos island [8] and some of the Cyclades islands (i.e the Small Cyclades) [9].

Best mountainous regions:
The Pindus mountain range and Agrafa mountains covering almost all of Epirus, Southwest Macedonia, West Thessaly, Northwest Sterea Hellas [1]. The rest of the mountains of Sterea Hellas [2]. The two mountain ranges of Crete island [3]. The mountainous core of Arcadia in Peloponnese, Feneos in Corinth and Mount Taygetus in Laconia [4]. Mount Olympus where Larissa meets Pieria [5]. Mount Voras in Pella [6] and Mount Falakro in Drama [7]. Mount Pelion in Magnesia [8].
Tumblr media
Best forests, wetlands and ecoregions:
The forests in Thrace and East Macedonia [1], Kerkini in Serres, Skra lake in Kilkis and the waterfalls of Edessa [2], the Perspa lakes and the wildlife shelters in Kastoria and Florina [3], the National Woodland parks in Ioannina and Grevena [4], the Marine Park in Alonissos island and the forests in Mount Pelion [5], Plastira Lake in Karditsa [6], the many wetlands of Aetolia-Acarnania [7], the Marine Park of Zakynthos island [8], wetlands and forests in Elis [9], Feneos in Corinthia [10], Gorge of Samaria in Chania [11].

Tumblr media
Best unique regions, standalone areas, natural and cultural wonders etc:
Meteora in Trikala is a category on its own [1], Santorini but also other places in Cyclades islands too (i.e Milos) [2], Samothrace [3], Livaditis of Xanthi, the tallest waterfall in the Balkans, in a challenging to access region [4], the autonomous Monastic State of Mount Athos [5], the sand dunes in Lemnos island and the petrified forest in Lesvos island [6], Vikos Gorge in Ioannina [7], Melissani lake in Cephalonia island and the Blue Caves in Zakynthos island [8], Polylimnio in Messenia and Diros caves in Laconia [9], several features in Chania (i.e Balos lagoon, Elafonissi pink beach, Samaria gorge) [10], the Corinth Canal in Corinthia [11] and the Servia gorge and Bouharia in Kozani [12].
Tumblr media
Important note: This was an attempt to narrow it down. I excluded dozens of locations with beautiful archaeological museums, ancient theatres, tombs etc. I excluded many areas with pretty mountain villages. I excluded half the good beaches. I have certainly forgotten stuff. For example, I haven't coloured even once a place I really like. But in general I think the result is decent. Not perfect but not that far off either.
