Ramblings on my theories under the cut.

Before night or day, before dark or cold, ponies lived in an empty land without purpose. Perhaps Sterling and Gold's love connected them, it powered them. They didn't discover the magic of love, but they discovered the magic of Balance. Sterling's calm beauty and Golden Lily's excitable nature balanced out and caused an explosion of color into the pony world! Pony's found that having friends, falling in love, and working together was a good thing. Cutiemarks began to form on few ponies, but increased with each generation of finding purpose. At some point, the changlings came along, and fed off of that love, but the princesses saw it as a negative. They fought off the creatures that fed on the love, until Queen Chrysalis stepped up and banished them. Sterling went on to create the crystal empire's humble beginnings and Gold Lily created the startings of Canterlot, both under different names years ago.

Both Alicorns never saw their lover again, and simply grew more and more sad as time went on. They grew heart broken and each set a spell on themself to never have to remember the other, becoming just a statue. Just a legend.

Maybe some day Pinkie and Fluttershy get called to different parts of the map, and wake up the two to connect them once more. To connect their love again.
