In the winter of 1990, when the Congressional legislation to turn a proposed Americans with Disabilities Act into law stalled in the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation, hundreds of concerned disability rights activists and others from the affected community descended on Washington, D.C. There, they joined with local activists at the White House and at the U.S. Capitol Building to protest the efforts within government to stall and stop the Act from passing.
The most memorable moment in the winter’s activism happened on March 12, 1990, when dozens of these protestors at the Capitol abandoned their mobility aids and began to climb, crawl, and edge up the steps to the top of the west Capitol entrance on the National Mall. Some climbing on their own and some climbing with help from friends and family, they were cheered on by allies, onlookers, and the press. This direct action, which forced Congress to see them, is known to history as the Capitol Crawl.

"Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins got on all fours to begin the ascent. Just 8 years old at the time with cerebral palsy, the climb up the stairs took almost an hour. But she was determined.
"As a matter of fact, I said, 'I'll take all night if I have to,'" Keelan-Chaffins told ABC News about that day."

The idiot savant most recently brought to public attention is Leslie Lemke of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. In December, 1980 he was seen by millions of viewers on the national news playing piano and singing “The Impossible Dream” in a deep and moving voice. He is very good. He is also severely retarded, blind, and has cerebral palsy. Leslie is barely able to walk and must be led slowly to the piano where he is seemingly transformed into another person. He has given numerous concerts and can play or sing perfectly any song he hears only one time. He can play classical music, ballads, rock or jazz and leads his audiences from tears to wild cheers. He even sings in four different languages: English, German, Italian, and Chinese!
Despite his musical abilities Leslie is so severely retarded that he was unable to stand on his feet until he was thirteen and did not utter his first sounds until he was sixteen. Other than his music, at age twenty-six he has probably reached his peak mental development consisting of a total vocabulary of two words — a garbled “Yes” and “No.” An infection when he was an infant required the removal of both Leslie’s eyes and caused him to be immersed into the world of sound as his only major stimulus. Leslie “discovered” his musical abilities one night when he was sixteen. His mother awakened to someone playing on the piano. She walked downstairs to discover Leslie playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. He played the piece from start to finish without a mistake and has been playing ever since.
[...]
The most amazing of all musically talented idiot savants was Thomas Bethune. Bethune was a severely retarded and blind slave who grew up on the Bethune plantation in Georgia in the 1850’s. When young he was utterly fascinated by any type of sound. He would listen to rain on the roof or even a corn grinder for hours at a time. He was especially fond of listening to Colonel Bethune’s daughter play on the piano.
Colonel Bethune first became aware of Tom’s abilities one night when Tom was only four years old. He was awakened to someone playing the piano in his parlor and discovered young, blind Tom flawlessly playing a Mozart sonata. The Colonel began cultivating Tom’s abilities, even hiring musicians to play for him. Tom could play perfectly any piece he heard only once. When Tom was only seven years old the Colonel took him on concert tour and was received by sell-out crowds. It is said the Colonel made over $100,000 in his first year promoting Tom.
Tom was different from most idiot savants in that he seemed to possess a degree of creativity. He could improvise on a song once he heard it. If he heard a song once, he could repeat it, but he would also correct any mistakes made by the pianist. The Colonel kept a list of songs Tom committed to memory but the list soon reached 2,000 and he no longer bothered to keep count. Tom knew literally every piece of music available in that day, including Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bach, Chopin, Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti, Gounod, and Meyerbeer. It was estimated that he eventually developed a repertoire of 5,000 songs. Tom had a perfect memory for any type of sound, yet he was so mentally deficient that he could only learn a few words with which to express himself.
A newspaper account of him at the time read:
Blind Tom seated himself at last before the piano, a full half-yard distant, stretching out his arms full length, like an ape clawing his food; his feet when not on the pedals twisted incessantly; he answered some jokes of his master’s with a loud Yha! Yha! The head fell further back, the claws began to work, and those of the composer’s harmonies which you could have chosen as the purest exponents of passion began to float through the room. Selections from Weber, Beethoven and others whom I have forgotten followed. At the close of each piece, Tom, without waiting for the audience, would applaud himself violently, kicking, pounding his hands together, turning always to his master for the approving pat on the head.
Tom’s most brilliant achievement probably occurred in Virginia in 1862. He had been playing for hours and was very tired when a man jumped on the stage waving the script of an original composition. He said that if Tom were truly a genius he could play a duet with him from his own unpublished manuscript. Since Tom could not read music it would be an almost impossible task. Colonel Bethune refused to have Tom submitted to such a test but upon insistence from the audience agreed to let him have a go of it. Tom was to play “secondo” to the composer’s lead. Amazingly, Tom played his part perfectly even though he had never heard the music before. He became so enthralled that he shoved the composer from the bench and played both parts of the duet, playing the composer’s part better than the composer himself! This was heralded as an act of creation and not just rote learning.

25 March is National Cerebral Palsy Day.
To celebrate this day and raise awareness of this disease, I have designed 4 onesie for your Sims infants.
Cerebral palsy is a group of diseases associated with movement disorders and muscle stiffness (spasticity). They are caused by malformations of the brain during development before birth or by damage to the brain before, during or shortly after birth, for example due to a lack of oxygen.
AFOs coming soon

Orhtesen kommen in kürze.

Respite in Home Services and Out-of-Home Respite Care
Caregiving is often a 24/7 job and can lead to physical and mental fatigue. It is important for family caregivers to take breaks, and respite care is a great option. It can be arranged through in-home care agencies, adult day services or facilities that allow short-term stays, as well as individuals you hire directly or volunteers from community groups. Identifying your loved one’s needs and preferences can help you find the right respite care provider for them.
A Health Force of Georgia caregiver steps in to assist your family member with daily living tasks, giving you the time and space to go out to lunch or coffee with friends, play golf or tennis, get a manicure/pedicure, attend children’s extracurricular activities or run errands. Caring for your own well-being helps you avoid burnout, and the person you are caring for benefits from the break as well.
Research has shown that respite in home services is effective at reducing the burden of family caregivers. It is also known to decrease feelings of guilt and frustration that can accompany caregiving, while increasing self-esteem. In addition, it can reduce the risk of depression and anxiety in caregiving family members.
In-home Respite Care
In-home respite care can be provided by family members or paid care providers. Caregiver agencies, such as Home Instead and Visiting Angels, provide respite services for a fee. It is important to screen potential care providers carefully, and ask about their experience and insurance. Advocacy and support groups, such as the Alzheimer’s Association, Family Voices, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, ALS Association, University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities or United Cerebral Palsy, may keep lists of care providers in your area.
Out-of-Home Respite Care
While out-of-home respite care can be costly, many communities offer government-funded programs that cover the cost of respite in some cases. Many long-term care insurance and disability policies include provisions for respite coverage as well.
Caregiver Burnout
Family caregivers often overlook the importance of their own health and well-being. If left unchecked, this can lead to serious consequences for both the caregiver and the care recipient. Respite in-home services can offer relief and help family caregivers feel more prepared to continue their duties, whether it’s for a few hours, a few days or a few weeks.
In-home and out-of-home respite care are both effective at reducing the burden of family caregivers. Finding the best fit for your situation can require some trial and error, but is well worth the effort. It can also be a good idea to discuss options with your primary care physician and to check whether the person you are caring for may qualify for government funding. If this is not an option, then you should explore other funding sources, such as long-term care insurance, veterans’ benefits and tax credits. You should also be aware that respite costs may be partially or fully deductible. Choosing the right respite in-home service for your loved one will help you and them live a happier, healthier life.
My Horizon Community Services was created for people with special needs, friends and families who need a better way to access individualised disability support. We provide a wide range of tailored, flexible and quality disability services and support coordination for people living with disabilities for their choice and needs. We are based in Brisbane, Queensland.

Afterschool Special
Entertainment has changed so much since I was a child. I fondly remember waking up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and turning on the big Motorola television in great anticipation of the upcoming cartoons. Of course, 6 a.m. was far too early; the only video was the test pattern. Then the national anthem came on, followed by the early morning news. Boring!
The first cartoons of the day were awful, but then the magic started. Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, Rocky, and Bullwinkle were my jam. Just writing that last sentence fills me with wondered memories. However, the magic faded by 10 a.m. because regular television took over. BOO!
For the rest of the week, there was not much for a kid to watch, with one exception. The ABC network had what they called an Afterschool Special. They intended these dramas for children and teenagers. For that audience, the production quality was surprisingly high because most shows aimed at kids had low budgets. I remember one awful show called Wonderbug. It was about a dune buggy that drove teenagers around during their adventures. Just thinking about it still makes me shutter.
ABC ran the series from 1972 until 1997. What set it apart was the thorough analysis of painful topics, including drug abuse, bullying, mental illness, physical/mental disabilities, crime, AIDS, race, and bad parents/siblings/teachers/friends. I wanted to learn more and found:
From the above, here are some plots:
Episode 32: The neighborhood youth gang agrees to bully and torment the new kid on their 17th Street turf.
Episode 33: 13-year-old Kate deals with the sudden death of her younger sister.
Episode 67: After their mother passes away, a 12-year-old girl assumes responsibility for her two younger brothers, Johnny and Roy.
Episode 72: Teenager Nancy Parks stumbles upon a case of child abuse. Their overworked mom beat and emotionally abused her new boyfriend’s younger brother.
Episode 73: A blind, developmentally disabled infant with cerebral palsy is left in the care of an elderly English woman who refuses to let him die.
These hour-long specials usually left me shaken by their message. “What if I was in a car accident and could not walk like the boy in the show?” These stories brought big issues into my tiny world, causing me to think about consequences, other people’s problems, and life-changing events.
Afterschool Specials were often a topic for my friends, and I distinctly remember one had the same issue. His sister was a bully, and he did not know what to do because she was much older.
I am sure the Afterschool Specials helped many kids talk about genuine issues and made them more aware of people with problems. However, many of the shows were difficult to watch. For example, it was hard for me then to face the fact that a disabled person should be treated normally. In real life, (back then) I wanted to look away. This is the show’s greatest legacy. It taught kids to be respectful, understanding and speak up about problems.
The Afterschool Specials were an anomaly. They could have produced “The ABC Afterschool ROCK-OUT Hour,” and kids could have listened to the newest disco music back in 1972. Yet, ABC leaped controversy and produced something extraordinary.
I think some of my good values came from watching these shows. But what about kids today? Where do they learn hard lessons? YouTube? Tic Toc? No, that entertainment spectrum teaches them important lessons like playing Minecraft and eating Tide Pods. What about movies? They are intended to entertain, not educate, instill values, or explore problems.
That only leaves books. However, today’s kids do not want to read about depressing topics. Plus, modern parents shelter their precious children from problems. What mother will buy her child a book like Episode 67, where a 12-year-old girl assumes responsibility for her two younger brothers? The teacher would call child protective services if they saw their student reading such a book.
Something big is missing from children’s education that was present when I was young because society no longer tolerates exposing our children to painful topics. This is unfortunate because, in this complex world, we need more than ever for our children to be exposed to reality in a safe and supportive manner.
    You’re the best -Bill

It’s that time of year again. March is National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, and Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day is Thursday, March 25th. This initiative was started by a cerebral palsy advocacy group in 2006. Supporters, activists, and advocates recognize the occasion by wearing the color green, using the #GoGreen4CP hashtag, and donating to organizations such as the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. The goals of National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month are to push for positive change in education, health care, and the job market to provide more opportunities to those living with cerebral palsy, as well as spread awareness about the condition and how it impacts people’s lives.

October 6th is...
Badger Day -  Badgers have a long history and reputation among humans, and there are few who have actually seen one alive and in person. Badger Day raises awareness of the need to protect badgers from human predation and brings issues of habitat and health concerns to the common man. The word for Badger comes from the French ‘Bucher’, which means digger, brought from their tendency to burrow underground and create sets where they raise their families and stay during the day. Badgers, as it turns out, are largely nocturnal, explaining why they’re so rarely seen by most people.
Coaches Day -  Across the country in every community, a coach organizes teams, plans practices and training, motivates players to strive to be the best they can be. At the same time, coaches pinpoint areas for improvement and supply guidance. Every sport or competition requires a leader. More importantly, a leader who knows the game and drives athletes to work together as a team.
Coffee With A Cop Day -  Inspired by the cliche about officers and their coffee shop donuts, the national observance encourages communities to sponsor an event that will bring citizens and those on patrol together. The events provide an opportunity for open dialogue and improve communication. They also break down barriers and create a valuable bridge to relationships in our communities.
German-American Day - Celebrates the German heritage millions of Americans claim. This German-American heritage holiday commemorates the 13 German Mennonite families from Krefeld who landed in Philadelphia. On October 6, 1683, these families established the first German settlement in the original thirteen colonies. They named it Germantown.
Mad Hatter Day -  Taking our inspiration from The Mad Hatter (or any of Carroll’s characters for that matter) we may pursue laughable, absurd, or even confusing adventures. Breakout from the usual routine. Ask ridiculous riddles much like The Hatter’s own, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Play croquet with plastic pink flamingos or wear a funny hat to work. Celebrate the day with silliness!
Noodle Day -  Noodles are made by rolling unleavened dough out and cutting into a variety of shapes.  While long, flat noodles may seem to be the most common, they come in several forms, names, and textures.  And each kind of noodle pairs differently with sauces and meals.
Orange Wine Day -  Originally made nearly 6,000 years ago in Eastern Europe, the technique for making orange wine is being rediscovered. Surprisingly, winemakers do not add oranges to the wine at all. Unlike the latest beer trends, the wine comes by its color naturally. Fermented from white wine grapes, the orange wine develops through more skin contact during the fermentation process. Makers treat the white grapes like red grapes preserving the bolder body and tannins. As a result, the ordinarily white wine will deepen into a brandy orange color.
Plus Size Appreciation Day -  Stereotypes could fill this page to describe plus size men and women, but then we have to consider that more than half the U.S. population is plus-sized.  That means big and tall, full-bodied and robust persons fill roles that require well-rounded and amply skilled people.  With this talent pool comes buying power some retailers have yet to appreciate.
Pumpkin Seed Day - Among other civilizations, the Aztecs and Mayans were believed to revere pumpkin seeds as an essential and powerful source of food and nutrition. In comparison to other nuts and seeds, Pumpkin Seeds are one of the most nutritious plant-based foods. A quarter-cup serving alone includes an immune-boosting 17% of an adult’s daily allowance of zinc and a robust red blood cell-supporting 15% of the iron needed. This little seed also has a whopping 8.5 grams of complete plant-based protein in just 1 ounce. Ounce for ounce, that’s 2.5 times more protein than a hard-boiled egg.
Random Acts Of Poetry Day - Encourages outbursts of poetry. The day for poets and poet wannabes spreads random poetry through art, the written word, and voice.
Walk To School Day - Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It isn’t hard on our joints and feet like running and jogging but still gives us all the advantages. The goal of this day is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environmental benefits of regularly walking or biking to school.
World Cerebral Palsy Day -  Over 17 million people in the world have cerebral palsy. In the United States, 500,000 children have CP, making it the most common physical disability in childhood. This non-progressive neurological disorder is usually the result of a loss of oxygen to the brain either before, during, or shortly after birth. Babies born prematurely are especially susceptible to cerebral palsy.
World Financial Planning Day - There is a difference between a financial advisor and a financial planner. A financial advisor is a professional who helps people manage their money and investments. A financial planner may do these things as well. However, an important difference is that financial planners help their clients create and achieve long-term financial goals. Financial planners work with the general public and companies.

The Imperial Palace - 2:00pm
Warning: Discussions of bullying
Trigger Warning: Mentions of death by overdose of drugs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katrina: Min Kärlek, when the prime minister arrives, how should we go about discussing the current strife within the national congress?
Eric: Not to worry, Min Älskling. Mr. Anderssen and I have been working together to find a solution to their differences on what to do about the protests in Cirrus City. Let’s just hope it will be enough.
Tumblr media
Footman: Your Majesties, The Prime Minister of Newcrest.
Eric: Thank you.
Tumblr media
Eric: Mr. Anderssen, welcome back.
Lars Anderssen: Thank you, Your Majesties.
Katrina: Mr. Anderssen, pleased to see you again.
Eric: Please have a seat.
Eric: Now, the deputy prime minister has made me aware of some protests happening in Cirrus City. Might you have some idea of how it started?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PM Anderssen: Students from Foxbury University have been holding walkouts and protests over the administration’s inaction dealing with the students who caused the hazing death of a student with cerebral palsy.
Katrina: What? That’s horrible. For how long had this student been bullied before the tragedy?
PM Anderssen: According to several representatives from the University, it had lasted since the beginning of the academic year.
Eric: And the administration wouldn’t do anything about it?
PM Anderssen: They classified the incidents as isolated. Upon further investigation, the Imperial Prosecution Service found that this was a reoccurring incident, and the night of December 11th, the students responsible assaulted the victim and shoved a bottle full of Xanax down her throat. Poor dear died in the hospital three days later.
Eric: There needs to be stricter laws against bullying. Susanna always came home from school crying, because classmates would treat her horribly and would always tell her to kill herself. The administration would let her bullies continue to attend their classes. That student must have gone through similar incidents.
PM Andersen: Indeed, Your Majesty. Her parents have decided to sue the university for their daughter’s wrongful death.
Katrina: Something has to be done about it, Mr. Prime Minister. Why are the Congress divided on this issue?
PM Anderssen: The White Party believe that the incidents should remain classified as isolated, while the Blue Party believe that action should be taken to hold these students responsible for their classmates’ death.
Katrina: They’re divided on how to deal with an incident that is essentially a crime?
PM Anderssen: Yes. They’ve called upon His Majesty to decide what course of action to take.
Eric: Well, I think my wife and I agree that these students and the administration need to be held responsible for this student’s death. Why don’t I announce our decision when the Congressional Sessions open back up?
PM Anderssen: I think it’s a good idea, Your Majesty. Plus, you and Her Majesty should make an appearance at the university and address the students to try and calm the protests a bit.
Katrina: I think it’s a safe bet we do it, Eric.
Eric: Then that is next on our to-do list. What’s next on the agenda, Mr. Anderssen?
PM Anderssen: Your upcoming state visit to the United Provinces in June. President Warner and First Gentleman Clarence Warner are elated that you’ll be visiting the Blue Mansion in Norvan, D.E., and touring the Fort Lorna base in New Nagara, Camp Hauoli in the Makali province, and the International Museum of History in Del Sol Valley.
Tumblr media
Katrina: That should be exciting. We’ve charmed foreign audiences, it seems, and I’m positive the Nyfriedicans will find Eric’s dad jokes humorous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*The three erupt in sudden laughter*
Eric: Dad jokes for every occasion, Katrina. What’d I tell you?
PM Anderssen: I believe it, Your Majesty. Every event you and the Empress host, you have room for dad jokes in your speeches.
Eric: Well, Mr. Anderssen, rest assured, we will continue to maintain the safety and stability of our fellow Newcrestis and see to it that proper assistance be given to the family of the student...
Tumblr media
Eric (cont’d): ...and further continue to help out when required. Thank you for coming.
PM Anderssen: Thank you for having me, Your Majesties.
