i took a short drawing course this week, got to draw lots of plaster casts of antique sculptures from the university's collection
i haven't scanned any art in approximately 12 years so the watercolor/neocolor ii drawings don't look super true to life in terms of colour and texture but it is what it is! next time it's sunny around here i might take some photos to see if i can manage to capture real deal TM better
i probably won't draw much for the rest of the month because i gotta write one last essay to finish off my MA degree but i might scan some existing stuff that i particularly like, like some watercolour croquis that i've been painting

Watercolor Color Kits and Studies
CaranD’Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle. I’ve been exclusively using these in my small pocket notebook (bottom right). For the most part, I’ve been dipping a water brush directly onto the crayons, and mixing on the page, but I just learned I could sharpen them into pans and wet the shavings. Here they are shaved into half pans in an Altoid’ Smalls tin. Rembrandt Watercolors in Art Toolkit’s Demi…

Study: making pastel traces less visible. Using Caran D'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle pastels.
Test 1 below, doing random nonsense: looks gross. I hate my diagonal strokes, and using a dry pastel on a barely wet paper makes the pigment embed into the paper in a way that's hard to smudge later. (At least with just a brush)
Tumblr media
Test 2 below: only drawing dry pastels on dry paper, then smudging with a wide wet brush. Looks good. Wasn't trying to do anything special; it could be made better if I used a variety of brushes and stroke directions, but that wasn't the point today.
I like that the color intensity / pigment density could still vary from light to saturated, and both of them wouldn't leave visible pastel marks behind.
Tumblr media
Test 3 below: Tried to use exclusively wet paper for the pastels. No brushes.
Tumblr media
This turned out better than expected (for not using a brush). Some pastels seem to be softer than others - i.e. the purple ("lilac"), no matter how wet I tried to get the paper, it still left traces behind. Possibly could be fixed with some brush work.
An obvious lesson - wetting the paper is not enough, it needs time to soak in. Also, not sure if I love this particular paper (Clairefontaine Aquarelle Etival 300g/m cold pressed) - the grain looks like a videogame texture, not sure if I can explain it better. But again, not to blame my lack of skill on the paper.

. . . . . #mayandberry #schleppercrew #mayandberrylivestream #watercolors #share_watercolors #watercolour #watercolor_art #watercoloursketching #watercolorsketch #instaartist #instaart #artistsoninstagram #artshare #germanart #germanartist #watercolorlove #aquarelle #aquarellepainting #aquarelllandschaft #share_paintings #watercolourlandscape #algarve #portugal #neocolor2 (hier: Potsdam, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co4Ss0dr-kU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Koelreutaria paniculata⁣ ⁣ A while ago when I was in Rehab for my back, I ordered some goodies from Gerstaecker, a German art store, which I did an unboxing video for. Amonst my supplies was an A4 block of Clairefontaine Paint ON, grey, acid free, 250 g/qm and the beautiful watercolour crayons Neocolor II Aquarelle from Caran d’Ache which I did a swatching video for.⁣  ⁣ I wanted to show you the first artwork I used the crayons for here on IG which I did at the end of the swatching video. If you would care to watch the video please follow the link in my bio. I had seen this Chinese Lantern Tree in the local botanical garden and took some photos of it because all the little lanterns were glowing in the sun. Unfortunately, none of the pictures came out mainly due to the fact that I was finding it hard to stand and take my time with them. So I wanted to preserve some impression of the beautiful little tree and made this illustration as a reminder.⁣  ⁣ Werbung weil Markennennung und Verlinkung. Have a creative week ahead! Here is the process video for my latest post. I hope that this would give you an overview on how I work with my watersoluble wax pastels. The highlight of my art journal spread today is Caran d'Ache Neocolor II, painted on Moleskine Watercolor Journal. I decided to use the wax pastels in several layers of wet and dry applications (I masked the border of the landscape painting using regular masking tape). The set that was used here is my 30s set. I have a bigger set (84s) of these pastels but decided to create these posts with a minimal number of colors. It is to show how you can use a small set, and mix the colors while doing a painting. (You can check my previous post to see the swatching process video) Neocolor II Aquarelle are water-soluble wax pastels that can be used dry or wet. As much as possible keep these away from direct sun or extreme heat to avoid melting the pastels. These are Swiss made, and the pigments used are from Europe. Lightfastness ratings are available on the official website of Caran d'Ache. The brush I'm using for this journal spread is ZenArt Faux Squirrel Round no. 8, for other questions feel free to write it in the comment below. The slower and longer video is available on my YouTube channel, just search "ravenfox13" #RavenFox13 #ArtJournal #ArtJournaling #Journaling #ZenArtSupplies #Moleskine #CarandAche #Neocolor2 #Aquarelle #Acuarela #aqvarelle #WatercolorSwatch #ColorSwatch #Landscape #LandscapePainting (at Malabon City) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzF7BiwnB3N/?igshid=169m81lrlq7h6

After learning about the life of French painter Paul Cezanne, the upper class group, age 10, created a still life in his style using Neocolor II Aquarelle Artists’ Crayons (“Neocolors” for short). The bottom image is the photo of a still life I setup, photographed and gave to each child to copy.

Documenting some recent Trader Joe’s holiday flowers. These are a few days post purchase. I was recently reviewing my 2019 sketchbooks and found a couple with some blank pages that I should fill (a hand bound one with Mi Tientes toned paper and a Stillman and Birn Nova with black paper). So, I thought I would do 3 versions of the flowers (1) with watercolor and watercolor pencils on toned paper; (2) with Caran D’Ache Neocolor II wax pastels and Museum Aquarelles on black paper; and (3) watercolor and watercolor pencils on Fabriano laid paper in my Elam sketchbook. . . . #sketchbookart #traderjoesfinds #paperwhites #giantamaryllis #watercolorandpencil #neocolor2 #museumaquarelle #jenniekessinger (at Walnut Creek, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5wpgyfnBcE/?igshid=8i4590pafbhv

ICAD, Day 5: “Be Awesome!”
The index card is one I decorated with the Gel Press. I stamped the unamed Julie Nutting doll on a page from a beaten up vintage thesaurus, brushed on Aquarelle Neocolor II crayons with a water brush, and cut her out.
I accidentally cut one of the sleeves from her arm and thought, hey! I like that, so I did the same with the other one. I curled the sleeves slightly so that they poof up from the card.
I learned vintage paper is super easy to cut, which means I’ll be using it again. 🙄

Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle
Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle
I was reviewing a set of watercolor pencils a while ago and in that review I was demonstrating the pigment of the pencil by rubbing the pencil on a scrap piece of watercolor paper and then lifting the paint from the paper to the art I was trying to paint. A very dear friend of mine here on YouTube and a very popular lady throughout the art community, Valerie from Drawing With Fire, commented on the review, informing me that there was a product available online for watercolor pencil artists, meaning they didn't have to use scrap bits of paper for mixing paint.
Thanks to Valerie and her wonderful feedback, I found the Caran d'Ache product and purchased it to review, hopefully bringing to some of you a new product that might help with your art.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Ordinarily, when you are using watercolor pencils, aqua crayons such as the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II or even aqua based markers, if you want to mix colors together, the best way of doing this is to use a scrap piece of paper as you would a palette. The only issue with doing this is; the paper absorbs the pigment as you are mixing and so you have a limited period of time to work with and you will inevitably lose some of the pigment to absorption in the paper.
This excellent product from Caran d'Ache, the Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle, puts an end to this problem, allowing you to mix as many colors as you like at your own pace, no rush to scoop up all the paint before it drys. Also no waste from paint drying on the paper, every drop of paint sits on the product just waiting for you to create with.
However, before I begin explaining the product, some people have mentioned that you could perhaps find a similar type product in a kitchen utensil store and use if for the same purpose, which may very well be true, however that would have to be something you find on your own. Thus far, Caran d'Ache is the only art supply company that I have seen with such a product and so I thought there might be more people out there like me that was not aware of it.
The Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle Characteristics.
there really isn't very much to this product in terms of materials, however, the palette actually is incredibly helpful and creates an extra level of versatility to your aqua based pencils, crayons and markers.
The product itself is made from frosted plexiglass, a tough rigid plastic like material. One side of the palette has a slightly rough texture to it and the opposite side is completely smooth. The overall dimensions of the palette are 26cm x 13cm and 3mm thick, allowing the palette to be taken out and about with any artist without a any major problems, fitting in most art bags. Even when sat on the studio desk it is hardly noticeable at all.
On one end of the palette, there is an oval hole cut out, allowing both right and left handed artists to comfortable grip and hold the palette just as an oil painter or acrylic painter would hold their palette. This method allows for the rectangle shape of the palette to rest on the forearm for stability as the thumb grips through the hole for stability. At the end of the palette the thumb hole is located, so to has that end been shaped into a curve, as opposed to the straight edge of the opposite side, this is to provide maximum comfort and grip when placing the thumb through the hole.
Various Methods of Use For the Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle.
The rough side of the palette is perhaps the work horse side, this is the side that you rub either your watercolor pencils or aqua crayons such as the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II. Because of the rough texture, the pigment is gripped in abundance building up a nice mixture of pigment to work with.
In these images you can see I have used the Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle pencils and Neocolor Crayons. Rubbing both mediums on the rough side you can clearly see the pigment and of course due to the rough texture of the palette, crumbling has occurred, however this is completely desirable. Next all you do is simply wet your watercolor brush and mix the pigment together.
As you can see, the paint simply sits on top of the palette, allowing the artist to lift or mix as and when needed. Once you are done you simply wipe away any excess and clean the surface ready for the next mixing of pigment. You may get a little bit of staining, however this is not problematic so log as the palette is washed well between pigment changes.
The smooth side of the palette works in exactly the same way, only you obviously can't use watercolor pencils or crayons, this side is for aqua based markers or simply applying tube watercolor paints.
In the case of aqua markers, all you simply do is rub the marker pigment on the smooth surface, wet the watercolor brush and mix together. Again there is no time limit, you can lift and mix the paint as you see fit, ordinarily with aqua based markers, once applied to the paper, you have a short window of time to wet and move the pigment about before it drys and absorbs into the paper. Obviously there are occasions were this is the effect you are after and obviously one of the attractive features of such a medium, but the Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle simply gives another use to the markers, pencils and crayons.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle Price
I am sure some people will simply see this product as a piece of plastic and that is absolutely fine, however, as with so many products, if you are a passionate watercolor pencil artist or enjoy using aqua markers and crayons, this palette from Caran d'Ache will most certainly be much more that a piece of plastic.
Here in the UK, you can buy this palette for £10, if you live in the US you can purchase the palette for $11 and in Europe the palette will cost €11.
Conclusion
I personally love using watercolor pencils, I especially love my Museum Aquarelle and Neocolor II and so I have found the Caran d'Ache Palette Aquarelle to be a fantastic product, adding so much more to my already awesome watercolor pencils, markers and Neocolor.
If I am being asked if the palette is worth the money, I would simply ask back, how much do you use watercolor pencils, crayons and markers, if the answer is frequently, then I would absolutely say the palette is worth every single penny.

Good morning! Yesterday, I got a great deal on a bunch of gently-used art journaling supplies from a Facebook Marketplace seller - acrylic paint, stencils, stamps, stamp pads, embossing powder, all kinds of embellishments, Neocolor II aquarelle crayons, gelatos, a fountain pen... Can't wait to play once I have them sorted out! BUT FIRST, I'm having my first cup of coffee and playing with #BiscuitMcGillicuddy, then going out for a while. https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Qoa6GFK-A/?igshid=1tiurqvd144cg

#EzRepost @e.m.c.p with @ezrepostapp A wonderful relaxing and funny color along with my always very kindly and supportive friend @marie753c is behind me. 🥰please swipe to see her amazing version. 🌟 Marie told me that we met on Instagram back in 2018 and we both decided it was high time for a color along together since it's been years since our last color along together. So nice that our friendship has lasted for so long across half the globe and so scary how quickly time flies. I'm coming to the conclusion that it is of the utmost importance to savor and enjoy every moment as much as possible and right now a balance of joy and love is more important than ever. I enjoyed every minute with my Derwent Inktense and Neocolors II. There was a time when I couldn't imagine working with watercolor pencils and mediums. Hard to imagine in hindsight because now my hands go to this kind of media almost automatically. Each picture turns out to be a little adventure and in the end something unexpected often emerges. I'm also sometimes unsure about the process and then surprise myself. Your encouragement is also a great help here. Thanks for that. 🙏 I wish you all the best dear friends. 💕💕💕 📚 Sagor Och Sägner by @lidehalloberg 🖌Caran D‘Ache Neocolors II for background (Tutorial on my YouTube - Link in Bio), Caran D‘Ache Luminance & Museum Aquarelle white, Derwent Inktense, Sakura Gelly Roll 08 white, Art-n-Fly Gel Pen white Community: #magicalwonderbeings2022 by @wonderblings #flowersapril2022 by @marettateddy #springinpurplecoloralong by @randa_coloring #artfulapril22 by @ashleigh_maegan [Werbung] #unbezahltewerbung #evipatzer #colorindolivrostop #wonderfulcoloring #boracolorirtop #coloringbook #friendswhocolour #ausmalen #coloring #coloringforadults #colorindocomlapis #coloringaddict #artist_for_peace #coloringoninstagram #colorindomeujardimencantado #bestcoloringpages #swiatkolorowanek #emelielidehalloberg #emelielidehällöberg #sagorochsägner #sagorochsägnercoloringbook #derwent #carandache #sakuragellyroll https://www.instagram.com/p/CcYRUEOjvfP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Coming back is the thing that enables you to see how all the dots in your life are connected, how one decision leads you another, how one twist of fate, good or bad, brings you to a door that later takes you to another door, which aided by several detours--long hallways and unforeseen stairwells--eventually puts you in the place you are now." - Ann Patchett, What Now?
