Dagger with inlaid Griffin,
Knossos, Crete, Greece. 1450-1375 BC.
Bronze, ivory, gold and silver.
“It is a short copper sword, 40 cm long. It has an elephant apple and an elephant-lined handle, which has been fixed with gold-plated silks. The sword has an insert decoration of a sitting flu with open gold wings on both sides.
This is the technique of ink insert decoration, formerly called niello and with it the famous Mycenaian Greek textbooks have been manufactured. The insert trim was done inside a cut, which followed the outline of the copper alloy-based fluoride by applying gold and silver foil to the shaped surface of the sword... "
( an interview with Dr. Athanasia Kanda with the theme: "The City of Knososos, a "timeless" center of worship. "

"Some of the earliest uses [of niello in Roman art], from 1–300 AD, seem to be small statuettes and brooches of big cats, where niello is used for the stripes of tigers and the spots on panthers; these were very common in Roman art, as creatures of Bacchus." - Wikipedia
Caelius approves.

You know me, I love a dig in a box of bits and bobs at a junk market and was excited to discovered these fascinating Mekhala Goddess artefacts and had to bring them home with me. The two oblong drops are Nielloware which is a Thai/Siam technique that involves carving a design into the silver, (usually gods and goddesses), then using dark niello (similar to enamel but made of alloy metals) to fill in the negative space. These hand crafted pieces feature delicate silver carvings of Mekhala, in an airborne pursuit by Ramasoon, god of Thunder. Ramasoon, frustrated by his fruitless chase, throws his axe at Mekhala and she deflects his blow with the crystal ball in her hand, creating a bright flash of light across the sky. The collision causes a booming rattle, thus creating thunder and lightning. I've upcycled these mystical treasures with sterling silver wires, ceramic beads and Czech glass beads. They are available in my Etsy shop. . . . #niello #nielloware #mekhala #goddessearrings #goddessoflightning #mythology #ancientmythology #thaiearrings #siam #ramasoon #mysticearrings #ancientartefacts #assemblageart #assemblagejewelry #thunderandlightning #ramakien #engravedsilver #vintagejewelry https://www.instagram.com/p/CeD2zvwN8y3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When I went to see the Galloway Hoard exhibit in person, I copied the links from the three QR codes and sent them to my family. The general information was on the placards, but 3D models are cool on their own.
The Galloway hoard is a huge find, these items among others were deliberately buried in order to protect them- and then no one went back for them. For over a thousand years, the hoard lay undisturbed until it was discovered by a metal detectorist in 2014.
