#rolling with difficulty#art I made#'shut your up' is a verbatim quote from an ex classmate i just thought it was funny#i dont think it was intentional i think he was just so angry that Words Failed on him#anyway im absolutely not keeping that maxim design. god i fucking hate clothing design *so* much#austin: 'hes a gold plated mechanite dressed in blue and grey robes' me trying to figure out colour placement: 'what FUCK'#i had one (1) good idea and that was 'skeleton shaped robit' and every other part of that design went to hell apparently#bc all the other mechanites we've had were either like... flesh..? shaped?? like that sorta silhouette (basically most of the old crew)#or more mechanical/geometric (vr-la's designs and like.. k-lb? i guess? if that counts)#so. therefore. bone shaped mechanite. also if i was gonna try that concept on anyone it may as well be maxim if you think about it#idk i thought it would be interesting. and also undertale was my first fandom so uh#ANYWAY. MOVING ON FROM THAT THOUGHT.#this started as a 2am intrusive thought of like#'we (artists in the discord) keep joking abt how k-lb would be a nightmare to draw but like.. how hard is it really'#anyway as you can probably expect. famous last words#i mean genuinely mad respect to noir but i think i said to one of my friends when i showed them this sketch#'i mean this in the nicest way possible but you can just tell he was designed for an audio only storytelling format' LMAO#if anyone is unwise enough to attempt this (so basically @ my future self lmao)#do the lineart and colouring for the wires in front of the inner electricity skeleton (???) and the ones behind it on SEPARATE LAYERS#drew the wires all together then the electricity and had to painstakingly go over the electricity with an eraser it was a fucking nightmare

Kinkmas: Day 2
Day 2 - Sex Work
Word Count: 1,903
Pairing: Austin Sommers x fem!prostitute!Reader
Warning: Smut, some angst, prostitution, oral sex (female receiving), biting, blood/feeding
Summary: Austin tries to talk with you about your career, leading to some complications and a fun time.
Tumblr media
Out of all the different people in the world, Austin admired you the most. He loved the confidence that you had in yourself and how intelligent and artistic you were. He knew without a doubt if you took one of those little black pills, you wouldn’t turn into a pale person. He’d tried to convince you to take it multiple times but you’d always decline the offer. You were currently at The Muse, watching as he performed with Belle Noir and listening to the sound of their voices in harmony.
Austin noticed you almost immediately, his eyes looking over your form. This was a normal routine for the two of you. Any time you wanted to see him, you’d find him and any time he wanted to see you, he’d find you. You had normally seen him about 3 times a month before disappearing into the shadows. Austin mostly didn’t bother to chase you down because of your obvious career. You were simply not meant to fall in love with the job that you had. But for some reason, that attitude towards you started to change. When he was finished performing, he sneaked behind you and tapped your shoulder.
“Hey,” he said, his voice slightly raspy. “Hey,” you said, turning around to look at him. “You wanted to see me today?” You nodded. “Yeah, wanna go and get some fresh air, get out of here for a while?” The sentence had been asked many times and it meant so many things all in one. “I’d never say no. Come on.” He put out his hand for you to take. When you did, he grabbed it, leading you to his car so he could drive you to his house. “Any special requests or just the regular,” he asked before getting into the car. You laughed in response, getting in and buckling your seatbelt. “What?” You smiled at him. “You do understand that you’re the customer, right?”
He shook his head at you. “Don’t say it so calmly like that. It makes it sound like it’s something right to do or something.” He started to drive. “Yeah, I know, I know. Austin, I just have commitment issues and no relationship I’ve been in has ever been good. It doesn’t help for me to have come from two deceased drug addicts and an orphanage to live in. I never really fit socially and I don’t really have another way to make money.” He made a left turn. “I could always take care of you.”
You sighed. The two of you had talked about this thousands of times. “I know but I don’t want to hurt you. If I hurt you, then I’ll never forgive myself for it and I love you so much. I just don’t think that we’d be good together. I don’t think I’d help you in any way.” You could see the frustration in his facial expression. “Do you want to be able to not have a pimp and sell your body for a bunch of misogynistic and narcissistic asshole men?” You nodded. “Of course I do but you know and I know that it isn’t that simple if I want to keep living with a roof over my head. I’ve tried to get normal jobs but one look at my resumé and my education and I get a turn of the cheek.”
“I don’t care. I’ll share you. We can have an open relationship. You can see whoever you want and I won’t get jealous. I just need you to let me take care of you. Just stay with me, okay? Can you think about that for me?” Just as the last words slipped from his mouth, he arrived at his house. The two of you got out and he locked the car doors. “I’ll think about it Austin, okay?” He nodded before unlocking the door, opening it to a place you knew all too well. He closed the door behind you and locked it as you took off your jacket and put it on the rack.
“You want to sit and talk first like usual?” “Yeah,” you responded before sitting on the black couch beside you. He sat beside you. “How’s your day been?” “Good. I think it got better from paying you a visit at The Muse today.” He nodded, his eyes looking over you. “You don’t seem to understand just how pretty you are, do you?” You could tell he was deep in thought when he said it. “What do you mean, Austin?” He took his fake teeth out, taking in a deep breath before he continued. “You’re so fucking pretty and I don’t think you understand that or your self-worth. You can be something way more powerful than this and you have so much in you. You just need to let it out.”
“I swear, if you’re asking me to take that pill, I--” “I’m not,” he interjected. “I just need you, all of you. I want you to do better than what you’ve been doing, I need you to.” You quietly nodded, not breaking any eye contact with the man before you. “I will try, okay? That’s the most you’ll get from me, Austin. We’ve gone over this so many times.” Austin looked down as you spoke. “What has you so stressed, hmm? Is it your job?” You rolled your eyes at him and if you weren’t so upset, you would’ve profusely apologized.
“It isn’t my job. It’s the sheer fact that I will never be capable of loving someone and you think that I will.” His laugh sounded forced as he looked at you, his eyes slightly darkening. “I’ve been there once, didn’t think I’d ever care for a person again, and then I met you. I wanted you. Hell, I wanted to be you and now I’ve fallen in love with you just as you have with me. I’ve spent all this time with you and spent all this money on you only for you to tell me that you can’t open your heart one little fragment for me because you can’t show love, you have commitment issues, you can’t show affection. I don’t care about all of that. You can have all the issues in the world you want and I’d still stay with you but I need you to try. Don’t give up, okay?”
He got closer to you and before you knew it the two of you were kissing. As the kiss went on, the loving passion faded into a hungry and lustful emotion. When the kiss broke, Austin cupped your face in his hand and his breath hit the shell of your ear. “And don’t ever roll your eyes at me, sweetheart.” You blushed, trying your best to hide your face. You never felt like this with any other person as many times as you’ve been with someone, no one could ever make you as nervous as Austin did. “I know, I’m sorry.”
He nodded at you. “Just don’t do it again. Now, don’t do anything stupid. I want to fuck you now.” He held out his hand which you gladly took, letting him lead you up the stairs into his bedroom. You started to remove your clothes, folding them up and placing them on the dresser into a neat stack. By the time you were finished, Austin was standing behind you, his body naked and his boner against you. He didn’t speak, just pushed you onto his bed before he joined you. He started to kiss down your body all the way until he was at eye level with your dripping cunt. He wrapped his arms around your legs, getting a good grip on them as he started eating you out.
Your fingers threaded through his hair as you felt him do things you never knew were possible with the tongue. You arched into the feeling, moaning his name as he continued. Before you knew it, you felt his teeth against your inner thigh and a bite. You felt his fingers slip inside of you and it didn’t take but a few curls before you met your sweet release. He raised up from you, grabbing some gauze from his nightstand and wrapping up the bite mark. “Couldn’t help myself. You taste so sweet. Do you feel okay?”
“Yeah.” He smiled. “Wanna keep going?” “Mhm.” You saw him reach over to grab a condom. He ripped open the package, slipped the condom on, then started to line himself up with your entrance. When he was finally inside of you and you adjusted to the feeling of being stretched by him, your arms wrapped around him and you moaned softly. It was almost as if he was making love to you. The slowness and gentleness that he used as he continued on was like the rhythm of a lullaby. It calmed you and made your orgasm take a longer time to build up. His strokes were deep and they hit your g-spot every time.
He brought your legs around his waist, providing an angle that made you feel him inside of you even deeper. His breath was soft and raspy as he let out the prettiest moans and groans you’d ever heard. His thrusts got rougher and sharper, making you squirm around the bed as you neared your climax. When you finally got there, you started to scratch his back and let out words of gibberish. He simply whispered an ‘I love you’ into your ear before he too met his release. He rode out your highs before pulling out and tossing the used condom into a trash bin. He flipped onto his back and you laid on his chest, feeling one of his arms lazily wrap around you.
You listened to his heartbeat for a while until you decided to speak. “Were you serious,” you asked, stroking his hair lightly. “About what?” “Loving me,” you responded. “Yes, I love you and I am very serious about that. I never want you to leave no matter what.” You could hear the true emotion and feeling in his voice when he said it. You almost shed a tear from the sound of such sincerity.
“I’ll talk with my boss and see what I can do. I want to quit,” you said seriously. “Speaking of which--” Austin reached over and grabbed some money, five hundred dollars to be exact. “Here you go. This should be enough for you to be paid and then some. If you need any more money, just come to me.” You shook your head. “No, Austin. You really don’t have to do this.” “But you’re my girlfriend now, aren’t you?”
“Yes.” He kissed your forehead. “I love you and I want to do things for you as much as I can. I want to be there for you as much as I can. If you’re going to change your lifestyle and do better, I have to make sure I do the same.” Tears filled your eyes as you looked at him. “Fuck, you’re so sweet. You deserve better,” you said, already starting to cry. “Don’t say that. You are more than good for me.” The day was filled with hugs and kisses. Before you knew it, the next week came and you were no longer a prostitute. You were just a happy girlfriend to Austin Sommers and you loved that.

used up all my words writing fic this week, this is uncharacteristically short
listening
the last time i listened to this song, i was in a rental car on the way back to umass from seeing The Last Jedi with some friends. real oldheads: do you remember the mustang we all made fun of with lights that projected a little running horse onto the ground? that was the rental car.
this is a perfect feelgood summery song. no notes.
youtube
how'd i find this: listening to the s/tar wars rewatch podcast A More Civilized Age reminded me of how i cried in sheer rage at the end of The Las/t Jedi lol

reading
this is one of the coolest textile/data/activism projects ive ever heard of.
Even with natural dyes, for the most part, people don’t think about their water quality. They don’t understand that the invisible things in the water can affect the outcome of the color. You know, it’s just like, “Oh, madder is red, so I’m gonna get a red textile.” But there are so many more steps in dyeing a piece of fabric with a plant dye, or an insect dye. It’s not as easy as just putting some plants in a pot and turning the water heat up.
The goal of using color was to be able to visually demonstrate that not all water is the same. I was hoping to see if I could sort of pull out the pollution, but then what I figured out was that it’s very complex. It’s very possible that I’m demonstrating pollution, but I think I need to gather and do way more tests in order to prove something.

watching
a bunch of stuff, but a lot of surface level critique.
Tumblr media
Symphony for a Massacre (1963, Deray) is a french noir i picked somewhat at random bc it was on my library's streaming service. this is a film about a drug shipment, counterfeit money, and multiple double crosses (but none of them overlap in interesting ways) that takes you by the arm and drags you along, unwavering, toward the end. i want to sound less complimentary than i do there, but i can't be bothered. wanted to like it, it didn't grab me. i had some difficulty telling actors apart, and i don't think anyone's performance stood out except for the wife of a club owner, who flings her jewel box at someone's feet to pay her husband's debt.
Tumblr media
Maverick (1994, dir. Donner) is full of guys i love to see (Molina, Coburn, Garner) but committed the unforgivable sin of reminding me that there were two much better movies i could be watching instead: Silverado (1985, dir. Kasdan) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989, Spielberg). Jodie Foster is extremely fucking hot and more than holds her own. i think my big beef with this film is that i don't care for mel gibson as an actor or a person. also, this film cannot decide if it wants to be a comedy or an action-adventure (even though there are many funny action-adventure films) and as a result does neither genre well. i said "oh come ON" out loud at the final twist.
also rewatched The Batman (2022, dir. Reeves). i don't know why either. i think if it ended on the roof of gotham square garden and we didn't have the following goodbye scene with catwoman AND the following arkham scene, it would have stuck its landing a little better. wish this movie wasn't visually so fuckin dark, bud. throw some contrast in there.

playing
friday afternoon, remembered i had a code for Powerwasher Simulator, and since then i have played almost twenty hours. i've also almost caught up with A More Civilized Age, a podcast in the Austin Walker extended universe about rewatching all of star wars. five star podcast five star runtime
most importantly, BIG FOOKIN DISH
Tumblr media
it is so very seductive to open this game and have my brain turn off. it is SO seductive to feel like i am actually accomplishing tangible things. unfortunately, i need to do many things with no tangible results (or no tangible results i will see for many months, which is almost as bad) and i seem to have fucked up my shoulder by playing too much viddy gaem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the writing in this game (mostly in the form of text messages from your clients that pop in as you hit certain cleaning milestones) is so goddamn funny. this is a job sim game. there are eight billion of these games. they didn't have to be funny at all

Actor au: how do they feel about the kiss scenes and are they awkward
Adrien: … There were some moments back when Marinette and I were Ladybug and Chat Noir.
Marinette: Yeah, it was awkward as hell. And, don’t get me wrong, he’s a great kisser, but there were just zero sparks.
Adrien: Kagami called our kiss, “so-so.”
Marinette: Oh, and Luka? Awesome girl, but same as Adrien. No sparks. I-I just wasn’t feeling anything there.
Adrien: But, when we heard I’d be dating Luka and XY, and Mari would kiss Reshma in one scene, we were pretty happy.
Marinette: And no one get any ideas, it’s just a casual kiss to see if there’s anything there. I think Reshma’s supposed to end up with Kagami or Lacey. That’d be pretty cute, a goth and a prep or a crazy girl and a shy girl.
Jean: So… *Giggles* I’m kissing Austin T on screen, and uh… We’re both pretty excited!
Austin T: During the first show, back when we were background characters, I noticed Jean would always be giving me these bedroom eyes, and… *Chuckles* How could I say no?
Jean: Between takes, we’d sneak into the storage closet so no one would hear all the make out noises.
Kim: Don’t get me wrong, Ondine is amazing, gorgeous-
Ondine: Same for Kim, but when we were together… Long-story short, I’m a raging disaster lesbian.
Kim: And I’m proud of her for figuring it out.
Ondine: Enough of that, cuz I’m kissing a girl!
Kim: YEEEAAH! LESBIANS!
Nathaniel: I’m not sure Marc and I were ever going to kiss in the original show. W-we had all those moments, yet nothing.
Marc: Plus, we were at our fake heights, so we could kiss each other easily. Now I’m all six feet and need to either bend down or pick Nath up.
Nathaniel: When we’re off screen and want to kiss, I’ll put on my Monarch heels so I’m like two or three inches taller.
Marc: It took a lot of convincing the artists to make it so I won’t have on heels as Prince Paon because the last thing I need is to be seven feet. *Mutters* Stupid long legs.
Nathaniel: This is what you get for drinking milk.
Marc: Hey! I like milk.
Juleka/Rose: *Casually making out*
Ivan/Myléne: *Casually making out*
Juleka/Ivan: *Reach over and fist bump each other*
Ismael: I’m sure you already know Alix, Lila, and I aren’t ending up with anyone.
Lila: And I’m totally fine with that.
Alix: Exactly! We don’t need to be in relationships to have fun. In fact, Ismael and I are showing Lila how to skateboard later.
Lila: And I’m nervous as hell.
Ismael: Hey, hey, trust us. We got you.
Lila: I’m not sure I can trust one of the cast gremlins.
Cosette/Zoé: *Casually making out*
Director: Observe the lesbian and bisexual making out after reading the synopsis for the New York Special.
Nino: Hey, it’s no different than when we were dating on the original show.
Alya: Except now this guy can’t keep his hands off my hair.
Nino: Because it’s so long and pretty now!

Spoiler AHS: double feature.
I came back to AHS *sigh*.
This two first episodes of the new season make me think a lot about artist struggling with inspiration and muse.
In my opinion, everyone can write, draw, play an instrument... if they work hard enough. I don't really think it's about talent. Yes, some people have a talent, but it's more like a convenience. They still have to work hard. Some people will have to work harder than other, but that doesn't mean they lack of talent.
To answer Harry Gardner's question: Why Quentin Tarantino's stories are compelling, but other are not even look at? The answer is simple: Money and contact.
Being talented is never enough if someone want to work for Hollywood. The content you produce must make money and approved by whatever producer you are working for. Talent has nothing to do with it.
Art is subjective anyway. Everyone creating art content will always have at least, one person to love their work.
Austin, Harry and Belle Noir want everything without working hard to get it. That probably make their creative content very empty and they are literally sucking life out of people. A great metaphor for rich people. They are parasite, not artist. I don't care of what Austin said about the other Zombie, they ware just probably more decent than them.

ML Fic: Never Had A Friend Like Me
Summary: Lila’s making good on her promise, and Marinette is finding herself increasingly isolated from the class. At least she still has her best friend by her side.
Ao3 link here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A/N: So guess who’s sick of Alya and Nino getting the short end of the stick in salt fics?
Seriously, guys. “Chameleon” was a poorly-written episode in regards to every character it featured, but everyone still treats it like it’s the final word on what Alya and Nino are like. All I want is ONE salt fic where they actually support Marinette throughout Lila’s reign of terror.
And then I thought, “Well, if you want something done right...”
So enjoy this rare pro-Alya salt fic!
00000
The day after Lila had threatened her in front of the school, Marinette opened the bakery door to find Alya there, tears streaming down her face.
Marinette brought her inside, asking her what had happened, and listened intently as her friend poured her heart out to her. In a way, she wasn’t that surprised by what she heard.
Apparently, Alya had finally thought to do some research on Lila, and (naturally) had discovered that all of her claims of meeting various celebrities were false. This had led to her deleting Lila’s interview from the Ladyblog, posting a lengthy apology to her readers, calling Nino (who had been equally horrified by the revelation), and concluding that she was an irredeemably horrible person who didn’t deserve the friendship of someone she threw under the bus for a stranger.
Touched, Marinette told her that she forgave her, and that they could still be friends as long as she’d truly learned her lesson. Alya accepted that, and the two of them spent the rest of the day eating cookies and discussing various things.
Like how they were going to break this to the rest of their classmates.
00000
Four weeks after Lila’s threat, school had become more difficult.
On the upside, most of the class accepted the evidence Alya had provided and cut ties with Lila. And as it turned out, several of them were close to discovering the truth themselves beforehand.
On the downside, Lila still had several members of the class (Kim, Max, Ivan, Mylene) and several teachers under her thumb. And Ms. Bustier’s “set a good example” policy meant that if any of them tried to argue with Lila or question her authority, they’d get punished.
And frustratingly enough, Adrien still stuck by his original mindset. No matter how many times the others tried to convince him, he kept insisting that Lila wasn’t doing any harm and that they were in  the wrong.
Needless to say, his friendship with Nino and Marinette’s crush on him disappeared.
But, for all the friends they lost, they gained some new ones. Aurore and Mireille became a part of Marinette’s inner circle after she designed some outfits for them. Nathaniel and Juleka brought in Marc and Luka, respectively. Kagami joined them as well, slowly being eased into the idea of having friends. And – most surprisingly – Chloe and Sabrina joined them, both having long seen through Lila’s facade. While there were still the occasional clashes, Chloe’s relationship with most of the group soon became a vitriolic friendship (and maybe a little more with Kagami, though she wouldn’t admit it for a long time).
Alya was confident they could make it through Lila’s reign.
00000
Two years after Lila’s threat, Alya discovered that her best friend was Ladybug.
Hawk Moth and Mayura’s attacks had only gotten harder to deal with over the years, and it didn’t help that Chat Noir had become a horrible hero, refusing to help out unless Ladybug gave in to his increasingly unwanted advances.
The heroine needed some permanent help. Someone she could turn to when the times got tough, someone she could trust with her secret identity. Someone who could help when Chat Noir refused to.
She chose Alya and Nino.
Now, Rena Rouge and Carapace regularly joined Ladybug on patrols, helping her fight akumas and sentimonsters. The Ladyblog quickly received a boost in popularity, thanks to the increasingly common interviews with the heroes themselves.
As the time passed, more and more heroes would come and go – the indomitable trio of Queen Bee, Ryuko, and Good Girl, the brother-sister-sister’s girlfriend team of Viperion, Tigress, and the Pink Princess, the genre-savvy Gallus and Chevre Blanc, the crowd-pleasing Cloudjumper and Souris, and the ever-mysterious time-traveller Bunnyx – but the core trio of Ladybug, Rena Rouge, and Carapace remained.
Chat Noir’s popularity dropped like a stone. Alya made sure of it.
00000
Six years after Lila’s threat, Marinette finally launched her brand.
With the help of a website designed by Alya and positive word of mouth thanks to Jagged Stone, MDC Designs quickly grew in popularity. Soon, celebrities across the world – ranging from the children of the popular businessman Bruce Wayne to singers like Clara Nightingale and Austin Moon – all wanted an MDC Original in their closets.
Eventually, Gabriel Agreste himself reached out to her and asked to do a business partnership. Not only did she refuse, she went on to do an interview detailing exactly how badly Gabriel’s heir and his girlfriend treated her in high school.
Adrien Agreste and Lila Rossi became the biggest punchlines in the entertainment business since Lindsay Lohan. Marinette, meanwhile, met the love of her life doing a commission for the president of Okumura Foods, who introduced her to one of her close friends.
All in all, Alya figured they were doing well for themselves.
00000
Eight years after Lila’s threat, Chat Noir lost his Miraculous on live television.
From what Alya could piece together, Chat had seen Marinette and Ren interacting while the former was in-costume. Naturally, the entitled brat had decided to seek out Ren and threaten him, all while spouting his beliefs that Ladybug was destined for him.
Hawk Moth promptly took advantage of Ren’s anger, creating one of the most powerful akumas the team had ever fought.
The akuma had immediately gone for Chat, stripping him of his ring in front of a live news crew and revealing to the world that he was none other than Adrien Agreste. He then verbally tore into the former golden boy, revealing every horrible thing he’d done as both a model and as Chat Noir.
The team managed to purify the akuma and rescue Ren, but Adrien escaped in the struggle and disappeared. Not that it mattered; they had the Cat Miraculous back, ensuring that he wouldn’t be able to misuse it anymore.
Five days later, the public was introduced to Kuro Neko.
Two days after that, Hawk Moth publicly announced his and Mayura’s retirement from supervillainy.
One week after that, Monarch and Pavone Cristallo took their place.
Life went on.
00000
Ten years after Lila’s threat, Alya was in Los Angeles, watching the Oscars live.
Marinette had been nominated for Best Costume Design for her work on a movie that had been nominated for several other awards, and she had invited Alya, Nino, and Ren to come with her to the ceremony. Naturally, they’d accepted.
As the various announcements and performances went on, Alya thought over what the past ten years had been like for her and her classmates.
Rose and Juleka had gotten married practically as soon as high school was over, and their wedding had been a gothic fairytale straight out of a Grimm Brothers book. Juleka eventually became one of Marinette’s top models, while Rose became a teacher, striving to be better than the one she had in high school.
Marc and Nathaniel had started publishing their Mightillustrator and Reverser comics, which soon became popular for their positive portrayal of a gay couple and the general lack of angst most superhero comics at the time had. A movie adaptation was currently in the works.
Chloe had taken over her father’s hotel business, and was still doing her best to become a better person with the help of Kagami (her girlfriend, now a world-class fencer) and Sabrina (now a politician on the campaign trail). She also modeled for Marinette on occasion.
Luka was currently on tour as one-half of the musical duo Fangs, alongside his fiance (a lovely girl named Avril that Alya was, regrettably, not well-acquainted with). Their wedding was scheduled for next year, and everyone was dying with anticipation.
Aurore and Mireille had also gotten married, and both had become regular models in Marinette’s lineup. Aurore had also gotten a job as TVi’s weather girl, and Mireille was the new host of KIDZ+.
Alix had become a popular street artist, with her art regularly being featured in Parisian museums. She’d also taken over as Collège François Dupont’s new art teacher after Mr. Haberkorn’s retirement, which kept her in regular contact with Rose and Juleka.
The ones who had followed Lila’s word to the letter back in high school eventually managed to break free from her influence, though they knew nothing would ever be the same between them and the rest of the class. Kim and Ondine had gotten married, and they now worked as coaches in the same school as Rose and Alix. Max had managed to get a job as a scientist for a major computer company, and worked hard on various projects. Mylene and Ivan had also gotten married, the former becoming an actress on a popular TV show.
Lila and Adrien had both opted to stay out of the public eye after all the scandals they’d been a part of. Alya had no idea what they were up to these days, which was probably for the best.
And Alya herself? She was quickly climbing through the ranks as a journalist, and the Ladyblog was as popular as ever. She and Nino had finally tied the knot last year; he’d become a successful DJ, and was recently breaking into directing, with Nath and Marc’s film being his first job.
Her musings were interrupted by a cry of joy coming from her right. The winner of Best Costume Design had finally been announced.
As Alya watched, Marinette walked up to the stage to accept her award, tears pricking the corner of her eyes. Everyone in the hall started applauding her – Alya, Nino, and Ren doing so the loudest.
She took the statuette, cradling it in her hands, and started on the speech she’d been rehearsing before they’d gotten here.
“The first person I want to dedicate this to is the person who’s stuck by me all these years, through thick and thin,” she said. “My best friend, Alya.”
Alya felt Nino’s hand on her shoulder, and she smiled.
They made it. Together.

Top 10 Niche Interests
Fixations? Obsessions? This is incredibly hard because I have wayyyy too many niche interests, so instead of stressing about it, I tried to channel the 10 things that immediately speak to me and maybe aren't so obvious from what I post here, like how much I'm obsessed with wigs, doll furniture, incredibly specific blogs, all forms of clothing with pockets, swimming pools, whimsical bus stops, over-the-top bathrooms, etc. etc Instead, I opted for some specifics that feel a little more evergreen and long tailed, like, so LIFE-long tailed that it's tough to nail down when or how they became part of the national psyche. I thank @alienfuckeronmain for the initial tag, and I'm tagging her AGAIN for round two because I know she has a billion additional niche things, and she'll post them, and I'll scream because it'll trigger five other things I neglected to post here, and I'll probably post my own round two, arggggh, insert aggressive sighing. Anyway, I tag ANYONE who wants to do it, just tag me so I can see!

I have no idea why this concept PULLS so hard because houseplants are kind of meh to me, but you want to plant an entire-ass TREE indoors, in the place where you live? Me, too, and I'd add a conversation pit plus a combo gold/red bathroom, among other things, and, bam, we're in my imaginary dream home, which I have literally, constantly ALWAYS mentally constructed from the time I was about six or so. (If you're curious, it has multiple themed rooms, and the closest I've seen to it recently is the outstanding Dita von Teese AD feature, but Amy Sedaris’s apartment comes close, too). There are two (2) 1960s houses in Long Beach with magnificent indoor trees, but I can't find them online, so have this modern interpretation and cry with me about how I can't visit the multi-story fake tree inside Clifton's Cafeteria for a good long while:
Tumblr media
2. Conventions of Fans of Any Kind
One thing that I don't think I'll ever lose is how much I *love* people who are fans of SOMETHING, people who have a passion and create something about it or cosplay it or simply gather to celebrate it and connect to other people through it. The Internet provides in all kinds of ways, but I'm talking specifically about IRL conventions and the way my heart pitter pats when I first walk in those doors, SWOON! And it doesn’t matter how big the convention is or how random, I've been to smaller events like CatCon and the My Little Pony convention all the way up to biggies like WonderCon and Comic Con, and I have yet to be disappointed. I might know jack shit about what I'm walking into, but I want to see the merch, hear about the panels, and check out the people who are fucking PUMPED to be there. Sadly, I think it's gonna be a lonnnnng time until these come back, but I can live vicariously through my old photos, sigh:
Tumblr media
3. Dutch Wax Fabrics and African Fashion
I'm not the snazziest of dressers, but textiles, colors, and patterns have been an obsession that has soothed my visual soul for as long as I can literally remember. Wax fabric marries all three of those touchpoints, plus throws in a healthy dose of style, and I count myself lucky to have seen two big exhibits on the subject (this was one of them), oh, how I wish there were more! For sure, there's a fucked up underlying colonial/imperialist history here, but there's also humor and color and vibrancy, a reclamation of sorts, and multiple levels of fashion that take my breath away. I cannot do the different patterns justice at all, but the fan motif is one of my faves:
Tumblr media
4. Hearst Castle vs. Madonna inn
These two fall into my #home tag because they're where I'm from, and they speak to me as equally sublime and ridiculous, camp and kitsch writ large and small, different (yet similar!) versions of Xanadu that two rich white men built as shrines to their own personal "taste." And the irony is that a lot of people shit on Alex Madonna for being tacky (the Madonna Inn is...uh, something else), yet praise WR Hearst for all the high-class art and architecture, most of which is fully lifted from desperate churches between and after world and yet they're both more or less the same concept (lodging for weary travelers, self-aggrandizement, questionable taste-mixing). Hearst Castle edges out slightly for me because it's bigger and has spectacular scenery and history, plus it gives me doses of LA noir thanks to the way Hearst killed a guy in a jealous Charlie Chaplin-related rage and Hedda Hopper covered it up, all kinds of old Hollywood shenanigans happened up there, etc. But I'm low-key an expert on both houses of the holy, I'm OBSESSED with both, and we can leave it at that. I mean, come on:
Tumblr media
5. Snow Globes
I had to cull my personal collection slightly just to fit it all on the dedicated shelf in my bathroom, and I seriously need to refill all the water lines, but nothing beats a snow globe in terms of memorable souvenir, especially when you put it in a bathroom. The majesty!!! The jewel of my collection is the one from Sherwood Forest because WHY NOT celebrate a historic place and moment in the basic way?? He robbed from the rich to give to the poor, and the gift shop about 100 feet from the tree he hid in does the same! The circle of life! The irony of all the watermarks on this blessed image...protect:
Tumblr media
6. Highly Specific Museums
Look, we can all agree that the more venerated museums in the world are a form of garbage in terms of what they represent, what they've done, and who runs them, but I'm here for the museums that collect and celebrate things that tend to get overlooked. There are too many to list that I love that are still thriving, so I'm going to say goodbye to four recently departed faves. RIP to the Pez museum, I'm so glad I saw you and purchased your stale candy souvenirs. RIP to the museum of terrible food, you were a pop up when Phoenix and I saw you, and I will forever think about the worker describing people literally vomiting during their visits. RIP to the currywurst museum in Berlin, I've had currywurst exactly once and it was not for me, but I respect the Journey you took me on, including obscure east German TV shows that helped make you so popular (??). Finally, RIP to the velvet painting museum, there's no way to mince words, the person who owned you was crazy AS FUCK and had zero clue how to run a business, but I'm so glad I saw you multiple times and purchased my own velvet treasure (not this exact one, but remarkably similar):
Tumblr media
7. Liminal Spaces: Grocery Store Edition
Confession time for those who don't know me all that well, I'm a big time voyeur, and nothing fills my heart with joy like a walk at 7 or 8 pm, the witching hour when people haven't pulled the curtains, and I can scope out their decorations/furnishings without it being "weird." Another confession is how much I unabashedly adore grocery stores in other countries and will spend at least an hour wandering aisle by aisle, falling in love with how much everything is different yet completely the same:
Tumblr media
8. Agatha Christie Novels:
As a child, I was a fairly compliant reader--I had to read something for school? Okay! For my mom? Sounds good! But the books that sparked the initial fire for me to read something purely for myself were second-hand (probably fourth- or fifth-hand, judging by cover art) Agatha Christie short story anthologies, which were the gateway drug to full Agatha Christie novels, then other mystery novels, and so on. But getting back to Agatha, I obviously loved all the stories, but every decade spawned incredibly good cover art (like, exceptionally good), and this particular artist's are right up near the top for me (I go back and forth on a lot of the '50s and '60s ones):
Tumblr media
9. Scopitones
I link my obsession with scopitones both to my love of music videos in general and a shop in Austin, TX, that sold DVD compilations of them in particular, but either way, they're underappreciated and kitschy all in one! Francoise Hardy and the rest of the ye-ye's are my forever girls for this medium, but seemingly every country cranked them out, both actual set videos and "live" performances? If you don't know what they are, scopitones were machines that played music videos in French cafes in the '60s (??), so it was sort of your proto-MTV way to see your faves sing and dance. Oh, Francoise...so moderne!!
Tumblr media
10. Cover Songs
I have so much patience and love for cover songs of any stripe, the more genre-bending and/or surprising, the better! My only minor beef is the trend in slooooooooowing down songs to make a point, but even those ones have a special place in my heart if they're effective. Live Lounge feeds my hunger the best, but my meta fave for representing this concept is Pulp's Bad Cover Version, which was already lyrically INSPIRED, a song about bad cover versions in terms of relationships, but then they did a video that was a visual "bad" cover version, with actors lip synching over an audio "bad" cover version, and all of it just worked? The cover for the single is someone in the band as a boy, making his own bad cover version of a Bowie album cover, it's meta meta meta, and I love love love, here's the video, if you're curious. In the more sublime cover category, I'm absolutely addicted to all of Orville Peck's covers, I truly hope he officially releases them sometime soon, but I wholeheartedly support any artist who does it:

Fantômas (1964) Review
Tumblr media
Today I shall reveal to you a hidden gem of French cinema of the 60′s...
Plot: The best men of France - a brave journalist and an extremely energetic commissioner - attack the trail of a mysterious criminal mastermind.
This 60′s French series of films comprising of Fantomas (1964), Fantomas Unleashed (1965) and Fantomas vs. Scotland Yard (1967) were pop culture phenomenons in the European circuit back in the day. Whilst not making a big impression to mainstream audiences in Great Britain or USA, these movies had a vast cult following in places such as France, Italy, Germany and Russia. Being of Russian descent myself and having been raised on Soviet cinema, I also had the opportunity in my childhood to get acquainted with such foreign gems that may not be so well known in Hollywood. French cinema especially was broadcast a lot in the Soviet Union, with a strong spotlight on comedies and lighthearted genres, whether it was Jean-Paul Belmondo parodying James Bond in Le Magnifique (1973) (also titled in some countries as The Man from Acapulco) or Alain Delon imitating Zorro in The Black Tulip (1964) or actually being Zorro in the conveniently titled 1975 film Zorro, or the pairing of Gerard Depardieu and Pierre Richard exemplifying their comical antiques in movies like La Chevre or The Fugitives (1986)......damn, the French really knew how to make people laugh! And no French comedy represents this more as Fantomas. Let me explain...
Its just great. Okay, I’ll give you more than that, but the basic sum-up is that this movie is great. From the acting, to the dialogue to the comical timing with the slapstick farce and the one-liners, this movie is goofy relentless bonkers fun. It is interesting to note that this movie is based on a series of pulp fiction books by writers Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre revolving around the shape-shifting evil villain Fantomas. The novels influenced French surrealist and avant-garde artists/writers because of their fascination with moral transgression and black humour (a term coined by the surrealist Andre Breton in the 1930s). Most of these books were grim in tone depicting horrendous murder scenes. However, with this movie, director Andre Hunebelle rebooted the Fantomas universe so radically by dropping all of the detective stuff and instead turned the noir story into a comedy mocking James Bond movies. Think of it as the French Austin Powers! Which one is better? Debatable but to me it would be Fantomas without a doubt due to personal nostalgia.
The entire movie is ridiculous. If you like slapstick comedy, you will enjoy Louis de Funes energetic over-the-top turn as Inspector Juve, as he jumps and screams about Paris acting like he’s the most intelligent person on planet Earth. In reality, its the opposite! Then the titular villain wears a Green Putin-shaped mask with the character even doing the stereotypical Russia laugh that, in a deep voice, goes “he he he”......look, I watched this film in Russian dub so it’s possible that the dialogue expression has been changed up but I cannot help but acknowledge the comparison! Speaking of Russian, this is one of the best foreign language dubbing I’ve ever heard/seen. The choice of the Russian voice actors was so well cast for each part. Especially standing out is, again mentioning Louis de Funes, Russian actor Vladimir Kenigson, who’s radical constantly-exasperated tone fit so seamlessly with the exaggerated mimic of the original actor. But putting Russian dubbers aside, the original film cast themselves are all fantastic. I can keep blabbering on endlessly about Louis de Funes’ comedic chops, but also Jean Mares is worth mentioning duo-rolling as both the titular villain and the main protagonist of the film. As the hero, he’s not so much a James Bond-type but still very much a cool presence. Then there is beautiful French actress Mylene Demongeot who is just gorgeous!
Sure, the film is badly made by today's standards with the cinematography and certain gags coming off a bit amateur, however the movie is so much fun and also its a rare time where the bad guy is smarter than the good ones and always outwits the heroes, which is still refreshing to see compared to most oh-so-morally-PC Hollywood flicks today.
Overall score: 8/10

There’s a few musicians in the show, you’ve heard them all, that’s how you know! There’s Jagged Stone who’s super cool and XY who’s such a tool. Then there’s Clara Nightingale, a sweetheart of a girl who’s music is outta this world. You’ve heard her in the subs, but she’s voiced by Disney’s Laura Marano (“Austin and Ally”) in the English dubs! Is it annoying that all this is in rhyme? Well it’s this reviews theme, so you’ll read it all through this time!
*Frightningale-Remember Clara from “Dark Owl”? Well, she was that pop star in the music video Tikki was dancing to before he cried fowl. She also almost faced her doom when Captain Hardrock made her stage go boom! But that’s alright, cuz now she’s this reviews focus in the spotlight! To show her admiration, she’s making a music video about our heroes for being her inspiration.
Marinette auditions with her girl squad as extras in a hurry, but Adrien is all a worry. He’s assigned as Cat Noir and his costume’s the same design, he can’t decline. If he does this task, his identity will be revealed once he puts on the mask! Marinette blushed, Cat Noir was played by her crush. When she was chosen as Ladybug, her heart was filled with joyce, but refused to protect her secret, making the right choice. She later changed her mind when Chloe got the part, she’s not so kind.
Chloe got mad and cancelled Clara’s video, that made her feel sad. When ones not chillin, they become a villain and Clara Nightningale is now Frightningale! An artsy version Of Harley Quinn, who thinks she’ll win, with her power to make everyone rhyme and dance they have no chance. Don’t you groan, for if you do, she’ll turn you to stone! (even Hawk Moth changed his tone).
A word on the costumes I have to say, they made them almost the same way. Ladybugs outfit has such a smooth fabric, I can tell from the close ups it’s spandex. Cat Noirs is cool with latax/leather so very nice not like that pleather. I pay attention to that kind of texture, how creative of the artists, such a nice gesture. Being affected by Frightningales power, that’s the worst, but it’s not just Cat Noir, Ladybug too, that’s a first!
Chloe mentioned her mom, a hint that she’ll come. Her father called her “the queen” if you know what I mean ;) *cough*StyleQueen*cough* From “Antibug”, we know Chloe has a Ladybug suit and came with the wig to look more cute. Marinette turned down her role oh so graciously, but alas, she gave in cuz of her jealousy. A backfire on Frightningales skill, just cuz our heroes were affected doesn’t mean they don’t have their free will. They’re too bright, so they continued to fight! Clara made the “Miraculous” song, but wasn’t that Jagged Stones!? That seems wrong. We could assume it was just a cover, we still love her (although the rhythm was the same, it was still a sceret when Marinette said her name). Marinette and Adrien are the heroes, don’t they see it!? Don’t they notice!? Not even a bit!? Alya was close, using logic, but it’s hard to tell cuz of the magic. It’s not all originality, both put up a different personality. I used a rhyme site cuz I got stuck and if this review was annoying, well then I don’t give a f**k!

Hello all,
This week, we embark on trips to see friends and family, prepare too much food, watch some football, but most of all, we take time out to think and talk about how thankful we are for all that we have. With the dreary state of politics, with the lack of kindness and gratitude, we can take this weekend to think and move differently. I know that I’m very thankful for so many friends and the many opportunities that come my way.  I really want to thank you for taking time out of your day to actually read The Chat. Thanks to everyone who helps make the festivals and all that we do, possible. Thanks to my co-hosts on the Fog of Truth, the staff at KERA who let me produce a TV show, and the staff, my colleagues and students at UT Arlington. I don’t thank you all enough so —thank you.
Also, while you are enjoying your meal, I’d like to encourage you to listen and be inspired by the great storytellers at your table.
Now back to film...
Only in Dallas, ONLY IN DALLAS could this happen. On January 10-13th twenty-one north Texas film festivals will have their own combined festival called Bests of Fests. You can see work from festivals from Waco to Denton to Fort Worth. Big fests, small fests, general fests, cultural specific fests—all but one festival in the area is represented.  This could not be done in Austin, Los Angeles, NY, San Francisco, Chicago or any other place, because here, we work together to support film and filmmakers. On opening night of almost any festival, you will find folks from other festivals attending or volunteering. At most festivals in town, you will find us supporting each other’s work in various ways. This just doesn't happen elsewhere.
The work you will see at this festival will be magnificent, and indeed the hardest thing to do will be deciding which films to see. We are presenting The Big Buy, the film by  Mark Birnbaum and  Jim Schermbeck, about how Tom DeLay stole congress. A film noir treatment of Delay’s original elaborate scheme to give Republicans a larger congressional majority, The Big Buy traces the distribution and impact of corporate money on politics. Of course, we are seeing the result of what DeLay did now. (FYI this film was shot on, wait for it … Mini DV.)  Along with that, we are showing Mosca a short film by Lizette Barrera. For Three Stars Jewish Cinema we are showing The Last Laugh a film about comedy and the Holocaust. There will be so much great work to see, don’t miss it.
But before all of that, we have the wonderful Amy Sedaris in town to receive the Kovac’s Award. This will be FUN!
To get ready for our school trip to Havana I’ve been catching up on Cuban cinema, so I’m a bit out of the loop on recent releases. However, I can recommend Wildlife in theaters, and They’ll Love me When I’m Dead, Morgan Neville’s documentary about Orson Welles’ film The Other Side of the Wind, which is also showing on Netflix. I would view the documentary first before the recently completed film. Welles’ last film is so much different than his other work. I will write and discuss this later on the podcast and in a column on theaterjones.com. While Welles’ film has moments of brilliance and insight, Neville’s film is tight and helps us make sense of why this film was created and how it happened in the manner that it did.
Also, can it be true? There is a new season of Bo Jack? Homecoming is really worth watching on Amazon and I’m not sure I really want to see a new season of The Man in the High Castle.
Speaking of streaming services, it’s so sad that FILMSTRUCK is being struck down.  The mix of The Criterion Collection and TCM was brilliant. However, The Criterion Collection will have its own service up and running soon, so sign up now to be a charter member.
What is happening in movie theaters? This week we remember why The Texas Theatre is a historical place, as well as a movie palace. On Nov 22nd, they will, as they do each year, show the film that was playing when Oswald was captured and later will show JFK Director’s Cut. Hmm, not sure what I think about indulging an
indulgent director. While I do think that this is a good film, please do not confuse it with history. For that, take a visit to the 6th Floor Museum. On Saturday, they are showing, Soy Cuba, which is an amazing film that you can also find at Soviet Movies Online. It is much better on a big screen, though and again before going to see this documentary, watch the doc ABOUT the film, I am Cuba: The Siberian Mammoth.
What else? On Monday night, you can see The Big Sleep at The Alamo in Los Colinas and on Tuesday night The Big Movie at The Magnolia is East of Eden.
Have a great week.
A very thankful
Bart Weiss Artistic Director Dallas VideoFest

How about some Phineas and Ferb incorrect quotes?
Ivan: Nah. I don’t want nothin’.
Chloé: Okay! Chop chop, fellas! Time’s a wasting-
Ivan: But I am reminded of a song. I waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant… Nothin’.
Alix: *During Zombizou* Hey. Where’s Nathaniel?
Nathaniel: *Hides behind a tree as Austin A runs by; sighs* …
Austin A: *Appears out of nowhere* Thwart me, Nathaniel the Artist.
Nathaniel: Hey. What’d I miss?
Marinette: Oh! There you are, Nathaniel.
Andre Bourgeois: Aren’t you a little young to be superheroes?
Ladybug: Yes. Yes, we are.
Shadow Moth: *Slow clapping* Well, well, well, Ladybug and Chat Noir. What are you doing here?
Chat Noir: That depends. Why are you slow-clapping?
Shadow Moth: I don't know. I thought it would make my entrance more dramatic. And it totally worked.
Chat Noir: *To Ladybug* You know, he's right. It WAS more dramatic.
Luka: I got life-size molds of ALL my friends.
Adrien: I'm not sure how I feel about that.
Ismael: Mother always told me if all the other kids are jumpin' off a cliff, I should, too.
Cosette: Your mother said THAT?
Ismael: She was not a nurturer. Let's go!
Marinette: Do you usually have coffee with your dad's sworn enemies' daughters?
Adrien: No, just girls whose roofs I've flown off of.
Marinette: Oh, see, now I feel special.
Adrien: Yeah, I don't just fly off any roof, you know.
Marinette: Of course not.
Adrien: I've got standards.
Sabine: *muffled* Okay, I'll see you at feh.
Marinette: You'll see me at 'five'?
Sabine: No, feh.
Marinette: 'Four'?
Sabine: Feh!
Marinette: 'Feh'?
Sabine: Yeah, feh.
Marinette: *confused* Okay... I'll see you at... feh.
Adrien: *wearing Luka’s clothes* I look like the sea threw up on me!
Alix: *Walks in with Nathaniel wearing a cone around his neck* Hi, guys!
Kim: Hi, Alix. What's with the satellite-dish?
Alix: It's a protective collar. The doctor says Nath needs to wear it for the rest of the day. I still don't know how he scratched himself up so much.
Nathaniel: *Flashbacks to when he was fighting Austin A on top of a building and then fell off the roof into a pile of sand paper*
Nathalie: Watcha doin'?
Shadow Moth: ‘Watcha doin'? What does it look like to you? I'm building an evil empire. My own very fortress of eviltude.
Nathalie: Aren't you a little old to be building a fort?
Shadow Moth: No. No, I'm not. Shut up.
Austin A: Back story time! You see, Nathaniel the Artist, when I was boy my mother would never let me swim in public pools.
*Flashback back to Austin as a child standing with his mother near a public pool; he looks at her longingly*
Mrs. Armbruster: No.
*back to reality*
Nathaniel: …
Austin A: … What? That's it! You know, not every back story has to have some big, in-depth spiel, Mr. High Expectations.
Ivan: *during a city blackout* What 'cha doo-in'?
Ismael: Reshma? Your voice sounds horrible.
Ivan: Fooled ya! It's me, Ivan. And my voice isn't horrible, it's raspy. You gotta spend hours screaming in a closet to get it like this. Hours!
Chloé: Oh! This stupid fence! Why do we even have a fence here?! Dad, tear down this fence!

The year is 2043. The place, Novo Redentor, Brazil. I don’t remember anything else. I’ve been here so long, spending most of my time in a cramped apartment above a ramshackle bar, trying to work out what I am even doing here in Yoko Redux: Dreams of a Blue Planet. I had the dream again…the dream of a woman. I remember her face, smooth and bathed in blue light. I don’t remember who she is, but I must have seen her in the bar. It’s like she’s someone important. Someone who is here to tell a story…or perhaps more appropriately, witness one.
