Katara's other canon love interests give her agency, and her pov.
Tumblr media
And gets a moment where the two connect over similar losses.
Tumblr media
Except Aang.
Kataang is framed entirely from Aang's point of view.
Tumblr media
Even when he violates her boundries.
Tumblr media
And is unable to handle Katara's grief.
Tumblr media
But Zutara?
We get Katara's pov, and give her agency.
Tumblr media
He saw her at her very worst, and wasn't at all hostile.
Tumblr media
And Katara opened up to Zuko in the most significant way.

On eagle wings in zombie brains
A pool of tears that never drains
Even cheeks squeezed tight could not contain
A sweet smell of love, my heart's methane
So I ask you, Axel, honest true and plain
Can I rock your world like a hurricane

Hey! I have seen your fanfiction questions post and I would love to hear about #1 and #9 for Damaged Goods, if you feel like it ( tbh, I would love to hear anything you want to share about this fic 🙈) . I'm Eldaranel on AO3 btw, so my comment that I have a lot of thoughts about this story still very much stands 😁
Thank you !!
Oh, hey! I didn't know that was you, thank you again for caring about my incredibly niche little playground! ❤ I'm just sorry it took me so long to respond to your comments - I get them to my email inbox, but since I don't really go on AO3 much, I go, 'Must respond to that next time I log in!' and then don't update anything for months, and forget all about it until I finally have something to post, and see the comments in my AO3 inbox. *cringe* But I am SO happy you enjoyed my Remi - she's a complete mess of anger and regret, but I love her.
1) What made you write the fic this way?
It was supposed to be a one-shot! 🤦‍♀️I just watched Kurt and Remi in 4x07, and I found their chemistry just mind-blowingly amazing. That 'we're not dead' after Remi was clinging to Kurt for dear life, and knowing that season 3 had a moment just like it where Jane confessed that disarming bombs was 'kinda hot' - something in my brain just seized on that and hasn't let it go since.
So I wanted an excuse for Reller to have sex - that was the reason I started it - but it wouldn't have made sense without both characters having semi-plausible reasons for doing so, so by the time I actually got to the smut, I was already four or five chapters in. By the time I'd written that, canon had gotten to the magical return of Jane, which was incredibly disappointing to me, since I (and many other people in the Tumblr fandom) had been anticipating what would happen as Remi gradually got her Jane memories back, the same way way Jane remembered flashes of her old life as Remi in the first three seasons. So that was when the fic went from 'changed a couple of canon details' to '4x08 and 4x09 never happened, and Remi cured herself and vanished'.
From there I had to get Reller in contact again (because more smut needed to happen, obviously), but I've always had the headcanon that Remi would never have gotten on board with Shepherd's plan if there'd been nukes involved. After all, she saw an entire village destroyed by the US military because they were trying to obliterate her - the injustice of that was what sent her back to Shepherd. So I think Remi would only have agreed to a plan to take out the government, with a few unavoidable civillian casualties, but not the widespread devastation of Phase Two as it almost came to pass. Shepherd losing both of her children to ZIP made her even more twisted, and the nukes were a late-stage addition to Phase Two (at least, this is how I interpret canon).
The idea that Kurt's image of what Remi was capable of might be distorted - that he'd think she was unbothered by the idea of nuking the entire East Coast - was really intetesting to me, and how he'd battle his disgust for what she was willing to do, and what she HAD done to his family by posing as Taylor Shaw. Balancing against that, his love for Jane and his need to get his wife back, and the realisation that Remi had good qualities as well as bad, and that her hatred of him was a defense mechanism, as much as it was based on what he'd helped Jane do to her life.
Basically I wanted them to both realise they were wrong about each other, and to find ways to very slowly fall in love again, despite so many misunderstandings and preconceptions, and getting past those wrong assumptions.
...I just didn't realise that it would grow into such a monster epic in my brain, and by the time I realised the ideas had gone from snowball to avalanche, and this would be an overly complex series of fics with hundreds of thousands of words overall, the show was over, and most of the fans had drifted off to other things. I've got disabilities that make fic writing a far more exhausting process than it used to be, and it seemed like most people preferred Jane over Remi anyway, so I decided it wasn't really worth putting hundreds of hours into writing the whole series, when I could just daydream the scenes in my brain. But I knew a small number of people were interested, so I turned my notes into paragraphs for them to get at least a little bit of an idea of where I'd been planning to go.
Then along came @nachosncheeze, and she went totally nuts over my Rellerverse (in the best way), so I showed her the small mid-scene snippet I'd put down in proper fic format from the end of the arc, where Kurt realises that it's Remi he wants in his life, not just the part of her that's Jane-y. And she loved it, and fed all my plot bunnies with carrot-flavour steroids, so I decided to write the rest of that angst-fest of a story, despite the three or four fics in the middle (after Crossroads) that I'd skipped. That's about 12k words now, but I haven't posted any of it yet. It's closer to finished than not, though! I'm slowly getting there. I just don't want to start posting another unfinished WIP, since I already have six or seven.
9) Were there any alternate versions of the fic?
Some small changes - like I was going to have Kurt handcuff himself to Remi while she slept off her migraine in Strikethrough - so that she wouldn't be able to tell him to go fuck himself and then storm out, when he tried to persuade her to stick around and pretend to be Jane. But I couldn't make it work with the mercenary battle I'd planned, so I scrapped it. I do really like the idea of Reller cuffed to each other, though. 😁

I honestly don't mind Velma having a crush on a guy in the new TV show. It's a different interpertation of the charecter then Mystery Incorporated. Would I love if they broght back Hotdog Water? Of course. But also would love if we have other LGBT Scooby Gang members. Let's get Cupioromantic Daphne, let's ask the question Should Scooby be allowed to be in romantic relationships when his choices are between his own species who are much less inteligent or a different species let's get Shaggy/Fred.
I mean the newest movie has confirmed lesbian Velma so I don't think we should immediately erase that. Maybe go for openly bixesual to be clear that even if she's intetested in a guy she's not straight.
But yeah my headcanon has always been the whole gang is a polycule though I do value other interpretations as a whole. Like most of Canon, there have been versions like this latest one or Mystery Incorporated that were lesbians but there were also continuities where she had a male love interest.
So yeah I don't have an issue with the show giving her a male love interest, I just am suspicious of the intentions especially since we just got canon gay rep.
Re: Scooby being included:
Canon goes a bit back and forth on how intelligent he is as a person in his own right. So it really depends on which version because some might pass the Harkness Test and others don't.
Personally I tend to write Scooby as a highly intelligent Familiar, but still a regular dog that does not pass the Harkness Test so no he's not in the Polycule.

SORRY I BUMPED THE BUTTON AS I WAS GOING TO SAY
TO KEEP THE TRAIN GOING: what are your ones on pk or the white lady?
I love talking about HK for long periods of time, so how about I do both?
The Pale King:
Sexuality Headcanon: Pan, anybody can get it. There isn't a seperate section for it but he's polyamorous as well.
Gender Headcanon: Demiboy, same as Grimm, only he has even less of a grasp on what being male is supposed to mean.
OTP: Pale Nightmare of course, which actually started out as a notp funnily enough, but then I accidentally read a fic for it and ended up falling in love with this ship. They have a fun and intetesting dynamic with each other, and it can make sense in the canon story(explaining why it does will probably need an entire post all on it's own because I have a lot to say). Secondary ships include Wyrmroot and Palewatcher.
BroTP: Monomon, the two of them are sleep deprived science dorks and will fuel each other's dumb ideas. He has a similar thing with Hegemol only to a lesser degree.
NOTP: Aside from the obvious ones, the Radiance. Enemies to lovers shit can work, but it's difficult to pull off even with characters who have a potentially interesting dynamic with each other, these two don't have that going for them. When one of the Radiance's main motivations is her hatred and thirst for revenge focused primarily at PK, I can't see her changing her ways and I especially can't see her falling for him. The closest I can see these two is very begrudging allies and even that might be a stretch.
Random Headcanon: He can play the Piano really fucking well, or at least he used to be able to, he slowly lost his skill as the void ate away at his hands.
General Opinion: Every insult I could possibly throw at him, but with "(affectionate)" right after it. He is a dumbass, he did a lot of horrible shit, but I can appreciate his sorry ass more than I like to admit.
Song: I physically cannot pick just one song for him, because my taste in music is just his whole aesthetic. I'll get the main ones out of the way first, "Touch Tone Telephone" by Lemon Demon, "Little Dark Age" by MGMT are both songs that I feel are generally associated with him anyway(I know TTT is, not as sure about LDA). And for a couple others I have "Choice" by Jack Stauber and "Toes" by Glass Animals.
The White Lady:
Sexuality Headcanon: She's a Bisexual that leans towards Lesbian, and like her husband, she is also polyamorous.
Gender Headcanon: I want to say Demigirl, but I feel like that's mostly my own confusion regarding gender projecting itself(agender here), so instead I'm going to say Androgynous(aka the midpoint between male and female). Pronouns and presentation do not equal gender, she comes across as very feminine but I feel like nature gods should be representitive of all nature has to offer, including through their gender.
OTP: Wyrmroot is canon and absolutely adorable. I love that the two of them are so devoted to each other yet that doesn't bind them to monogamy, they allow and even encourage each other to find potential partners outside of their marriage. WL/Dryya is also kinda cute but I don't feel super passionately anout it as some others do. I also kinda want to mention WL/Unn as a potential pair, I haven't seen much if any content for them and I feel like it coukd make sense.
BroTP: Grimm as I've said before, and oddly enough I imagine she'd be good friends with Herrah. I have read fanfic interactions between the two and that's probably where that's coming from, I don't really know how to explain why I think they'd get along, they just would.
NOTP: Barring the obvious once again, I'm going to have to say Grimm. I don't know, the two would be good friends, but it wouldn't go any further than that I feel, not just because I headcanon Grimm to be gay. Both of them pair extremely well with PK, just not with each other in my opinion.
Random Headcanon: This only applies to my Gijinka AU because hair obviously isn't a factor in canon, but she loves to braid PKs hair(which he keeps long to accommodate, and because he thinks long hair makes him look more regal), delicately weaving flowers into it and everything. It doubles as a sneaky way to get him to take care of himself better because he'd make a genuine effort to keep his hair as healthy as he can so she can easily work with it.
General Opinion: Big wife, plant mom, very pretty woman, I love her.
Song: Almost everything by Amarante gives me the whimsical nature-loving vibes that I associate with her, but "Mountains" and "The Other Side" if I had to limit myself.

thoughts on antis that accuse nalu shippers of being heteronormative?
This really is ridiculous 'cause ykw? A major part of the NaLu fandom ships CheNdy/FrAxus/StingUe. How the hell can someone with enough braincells call those poeple heteronormative? Lmao. Like I don't like Yuri/Yaoi personally but that doesn't mean I'll force any m/f ship possible with a character who's usually shipped with the same gender.
Those idiotic people just use this term as an excuse to justify their hatred instead of actually supporting lgbt ships. Shipping a het ship isn't same as being homophobic. It will never be.
I don't see how people are in wrong for shipping two people with outstanding friendship. Even if Natsu and Lucy were completely platonic, I don't see why the shippers should be called homophobic for that? There are plenty of ship moments ntm.
Wendy ships can be used as good example for my take : as I said, I don't quite like gay ships but I absolutely don't ship her with Romeo just 'cause it makes a m/f ship unlike most RoWen shippers (and BixAnna, RoGura). That being said, I also don't ship her with Sherria. I see them as best friends.
Then again, I ship MirAxus and StingYu 'cause I like the idea of them together since I'm into het ships. But do I spite other ships involving them? Obviously not. Especially MirAxus, they haven't had moments but I still love them. As for StingYu, they've had a couple of moments. I often see the MirAxus and StingYu shippers getting called out for being homophobic like really? Clowns?🤡
Shipping a ship and denying facts related to other ships(be it het/yuri/yaoi) for its sake are completely different things. I ship Laxus with Mirajane but that doesn't mean I completely ignore Freed's obvious crush on Laxus. Heck, I even think sometimes why Hiro had to create Freed as a love intetest for Laxus when he doesn't let him reciprocate those feelings and makes it an unrequited love thing. It still doesn't change the fact that I ship MirAxus.
Besides, shipping was never dependent on having plenty moments/being canon anyways. If someone wants to ship a m/f pairing with 2 characters that have never even met each other, it's just fine. Ship Ichigo and Lucy or Natsu and Rukia lol. Your choice. As simple as that.
Rarepairs exist and people ship those despite knowing they'd probably never be canon nor they need to be. I ship NaLu, but I get why people ship NaLi/NatZa. I'd ship Natsu with Lucy even if they weren't meant to be canon(Ichigo and Rukia) while still acknowledging whatever ship Hiro dediced to go for.
"Not all m/f ships need to be shipped" it seems ridiculous to me 'cause it's upto people's choice of shipping and using a statement like that means indirectly stopping them from doing what they like. You can ship whoever you like, be it m/f or m/m or w/w. It's your choice in the end as long as you don't act like a child and try to dismiss canon material that may or mayn't benefit shippers with different preference.
Idk if I typed properly 'cause I'm going through little tough time with my mental health. I'm having a lot of unnecessary mood swings and all. I hope you guys pray for me, love y'all.

SXF 7th COVER
Tumblr media
Willow chair by Rennie Mackintosh, between 1902 and 1904
Can we talk about the objects that are supposed to be related with the characters? Anya had her quimera, Fiona photos of Loid... Endo has let clear that the elements in the covers are from the characters, either something they actually have or something that represent their hobbies/intetests/personalities. My son likes skateboard and superhero mangas, that's having good taste
Now being serious I headcanoned(?) that either Damian or his child would be into skateboard and superheros because 1 I love both things and I wanted to think a character likes it as well 2 I could totally see it 3 Imagine Anya wanting to be a spy while he or another kid would want to be a superhero (bonus points if the others want to be an assassin like grandma Yor, a spy like mama Anya and grandpa Loid or a detective/ninja being the first in the Forgers into it)
And now that it's canon I'm happy

3am realisations: Elsa has no faith in Anna.
i’m not expecting this post to get any attention BUT: If you're a major Elsa-stan, or are strongly anti-Anna, do not read this. Chances are you're unable to respect other people's opinions, and I don't wanna hear your whining. Also, Els*nna shippers don't interact.
(quick edit cuz this is getting more than 3 notes for some reason??? i love sweet lil snow baby elsa from frozen2013 and 10000% blame the writers for what happened in frozen2019, so please bear in mind that i am mostly critisicing the writers and not the character, even though it was the poor character that got betrayed. all opinions welcome if you’re respectful and mature! any hate on anna will not be tolerated, idgaf who you are)
I wanna say for starters that this is not a hate post. Up until the "shoving you down a hill" scene, I loved Elsa. I felt for her, and was intetested in her motives and thoughts, because she's a bit of a peculiar character. However, I lost all love and understanding after she manipulated and betrayed Anna.
It kinda pisses me off seeing people defend this scene.
"Anna would've drowned if she went with." (read further.) "Anna's an ordinary human; she couldn't have helped." (Elsa is an "ordinary" human, too. They're both "the bridge." Anna's magic is her love. Elsa is not more than Anna. They're the same.) "Anna was too clingy and co-dependent." (Anna was petrified of once again losing her sister, and rightly so. Elsa was careless, and Anna was terrified throughout the entire movie because of Elsa's behaviour.) "Elsa did nothing wrong." (read further.)
Let's theorize what would've happened if Anna went with.
Anna wouldn't have gone into the ocean. She would've stayed on the beach and waited for Elsa to return, because Anna has faith in Elsa.
They would have made it to the dark sea and Anna would've been able to see for herself that it was too dangerous. She could then decide on her own to stay behind.
They both somehow battle the Nokk, realise that they're both "the bridge" because they both survive, and they travel to Ahtohallan together. Not likely, but if the writers gave a shit about Anna (which we know they don't), they would've found a way to make it work.
"But Anna would've froze in Ahtohallan."
I don't think Anna would've been interested by that point. If they'd communicated clearly, Anna would've learned quickly that she was needed elsewhere. She would've travelled back to Northuldra to wait for Elsa's delivery of information. She could’ve tracked down her fkin BOYFRIEND that the writers also hate for some reason. Then, Anna could act from there. Anna would be able to stay and wait ALONGSIDE KRISTOFF because Anna has faith in Elsa.
Why was this particular scene so problematic?
It teaches kids that being stubborn, manipulating those that love you, and shoving them down a hill is okay behaviour that will have absolutely zero consequences.
It shows that communication is irrelevant, no matter how badly at least one person wants to talk.
It makes Elsa look terrible.
It makes Anna look weak.
Instead of throwing a fit and having it her way, Elsa could've:
Offered to take Anna a little further.
Assured her that everything would be okay and that they'd meet up later.
Given her another task to distract her and give her a purpose.
 Instead, she:
Manipulated Anna by using her love against her. All Anna ever wanted/needed was real attention, and the ONLY time Elsa initiated a hug [on screen] was when she was manipulating. That is so beyond okay.
Betrayed Anna by once again forcing her away against her will without so much as a goodbye.
Never apologised for the fear and pain she inflicted upon Anna.
By refusing to listen; by refusing to give Anna (you know, the woman who saved the kingdom, saved herself, saved Elsa, DIED for everyone, proved on multiple occassions how capable she is) a chance, Elsa proved that she has absolutely no faith in her sister. Elsa proved that she has no thought or consideration for her sister's feelings. She never asked if Anna was okay as the redhead sobbed. She never apologised for her actions. She never offered any kind of solution. She was emotionless during their reunion, and then left without a second thought. Elsa doesn't care about Anna. Elsa simply doesn't want to be followed around, and will obviously do anything to ensure her own independence.
Before you jump into defense mode: Elsa didn't make any grand sacrifices in Frozen. Her parents locked her away, and brainwashed her. She was a victim of abuse, not some great protector of her sister. This does not make her a villain! This was one part of her that I personally related too, because of my own upbringing. To me, her selfishness is understandable. She has to put herself first to survive. But by Frozen 2, there is no room for excuses. She made poor, selfish decisions, for poor, selfish motives.
I wholeheartedly blame the writers. I can understand why people loved and related to her in the first movie, but after her actions in Frozen 2... it says a lot more about you than you think if this is the kind of person you look up to.
The facts: Frozen is Anna's story. It's a story about a spunky young woman who longs for a taste of freedom. Elsa is the mystery. She builds plot and mystery; she adds depth and meaning to the tale. But Frozen follows Anna because it's a story about Anna and her sister. It was never about "Anna and Elsa." The story was never about Elsa. I don't say this to shadow Elsa; she's a mysterious, mythical character, and that is beautiful. By throwing her into the spotlight and making her “badass” (that’s a reach), they made her unlike herself. They had to rewrite the character to the point where she isn’t even recognisable. This wasn’t growth. She didn’t grow, or learn.
Ending this here cuz I’m getting sad. I'm disappointed that they took such a soft lil snow baby and turned her into a cold-hearted ice witch. I miss who Elsa used to be, but unfortunately, this is canon now. I'll forever cherish 2013 Elsa, and severely pity the assassination that occurred in 2019.
And... I think they lost their footing with Anna, too. I'm not being biased, but this post is long enough already. Maybe a part 2 will come when I need to dump more thoughts.

Further reactions to "The book of lost tales":
I appreciate that Idril canonically wears armor and does swordfighting.
I feel like I can actually imagine adult!Idril much better now like in armor and with open hair, distraught but ready to fight while babby Earendil does not yet realize the danger...
My first thought is that Earendil was probably cute in that baby chainmail. My second thought is OUCH, Idril and Tuor always made sure their growing baby had fitting chainmail cause they felt the apocalypse might get them at any moment. Imagine that, imagine them having the baby armor fitted every year or so :(
Its fun how much of the basic structure already exists but most of what you'd consider the main characters doesn't exist or is scattered across various minor roles The only Prince anywhere in sight is Turgon - Except for Team Doriath, theyre all accounted for. I suppose Maeglin is kinda there in name only with vaguely the same role & motivation, but looks personality and background all did a 180 since. Luthien is still pretty much "princesd classic" at this point, not quite the fearless go-getter from the final version - markedly this version tells Beren that she doesnt want to wander in the wilderness with him whereas the final one says she doesnt care and its Beren still wants to get the shiny so as not to ask this of her and also for his honor.
I mean in the finished version Id consider the 3rd and 4th gen royals to be the main characters (well, alobgside Team Doriath and the varioud human heroes) and theyre hardly here. Imagine the silm with no Finrod!
Feanor had no affiliation with the royal family whatsoever, and is also generally less super. He's just the guy who won the jewelsmithing competition, not the inventor of the whole discipline. Still seems to have been envisionad as a respected member of the community who gets called to the palace for crisis meetings and is listened to when he stsrts giving speeches. From the first he already has the backstory of going off the deep end (or at least growing disillusioned with Valinor) after a family member is killed by Melkor and theyre still the first to die, but its just some other rando unrelated to the royals
The situation regarding the humans is different - instead of Melkor leaking their existence, its Manwe who explains that the other continents were supposed to be for them eventually. So Feanor goes off on a tirade about weak puny mortals comes off as a more of a jerk unlike in the final version where Melkor barely knew about the humans and described them to the Noldor as a threat. On the other hand in this one, also very much unlike in the finished product, Melkor dupes even Manwe into being unfair to the elves as a whole. In this the final version is a definite improvement, both Feanor and the Valar come off as a lot more sympathetic and though still deceived he's partially right in some things at least, so you have more of a genuine tragedy rather than a simple feud
There is something to the idea of Commoner!Feanor tho. I guess some of this survived in his nomadic explorer lifestyle and how both his wife and mother (who arent mentioned here) eventually were the ones to get that background of being not especially pretty ladies who are not from the nobility but got renown, respect and acclaim for their unique talent and contribution to society, with each having invented things and Nerdanel also being renowed for her wisdom. Hes sort of an odysseus-like Figure in that sense. I suppose later developements necesitated that Maedhros & co. have an army not just a band of thieves, which means they needed to be nobles/lords. That said this being a society where artisans are very respected and half the lords have scholarly/artistic pursuits going, the gap was probably not as big to begin with as it might have been in say, medieval England. Esoecially since Nerdanel's father had been given special honor by one of the local deities and that the social order might have been a very recent thing in Miriel's time. One might speculate that the first generation of Lords started out as warriors during the great journey, or perhaps just Finwe's friend group.
Also found that bit intetesting where the Valar have to deal with the remaining political tensions and effects of Melkor's lies on the remaining population in Valinor... - i guess with the change of framing device it was less likely for news of something like this to reach Beleriand. That, or the existence of Finarfin and his repentance made this go smoother this over in later cannon
Turgon's go-down-with-the-ship moment reaaly got to me. Im half tempted to write a fic where his wife, siblings and dad glomp him on arrival in Mandos. I dont care that none of them exists yet in this continuity i want Turgon to get hugs
I love all the additional Detail that got compressed out in the shift from fairytale-ish to pseudohistoric style especially all the various Valinor magic insofofar as it is compatible with the final version - particularly love the idea of the connection between the lamps and the trees that is now integrated into my headcanon forever
Its actually explained what the doors of night are
If I had not already read unfinished tales or volumes X to XII where this is also apparent, this is where I would say: Ah so the Valar were supposed to be flawed characters. Manwe has an actual arc; by the time he sends Gandalf he finally "got" it. I think in the published silm the little arcs of Ulmo and Manwe are mostly just lost in compression/ less apparent when only some of the relevant scenes got in but not all
It occurred to me way too late that the "BG" chars are the most consistent because theyre at the start and most stories are written from beginning to end. Finwe doesnt get a dedicated paragraph of explicit description until HoME X but my takeaway was that he's described pretty much like I always imagined him anyways/ same vibe I always got from him... charismatic, thoughtful, enthusiastic, sanguine temperament, brave in a pinch but at times lets his judgement be clouded by personal sentiment (though that last bit is more apparent/salient as a character flaw once he became the father of a certain Problem Child) ...i guess this would be a result of jrrt having had a consistent idea of him in his head for a long time.
This means Finwe's still alive at the time of the exodus which is just fun to see/interesting to know... Interestingly he sort of gets what later would be Finarfin's part of ineffectually telling everxone to please chill and think it over first while Feanor simply shouts louder (which is consistent with his actions before the sword incident in later canon where he initially spoke out against the suspiciozs regarding the Valar) - but its not exactly the same, he's more active than Finarfin later in that when "chillax" availed nothing he said that then at least they should talk with the other Kings and Manwe to leave with their blessing and get help leaving (This seems like it would have been the clusterfuck preventing million dollar suggestion in the universe where Feanor is related to him and values him) but when even that falls on death ears he decides that he "would not be parted from his people" and went to run the preparations. I find it interesting that the motivation is sentiment/attachment (even phrased as "he would not be parted from [his people]" same words/ expression as is later used for the formenos situation), not explicitly obligation as it later is for Fingolfin (who had promised to follow Feanor and didnt want to leave his subjects at the mercy of Feanor's recklessness )
Speaking of problem children. It seems the sons of Feanor were the Kaworu Nagisa of the Silmarillion in that originally all they do is show up at some point and kill Dior as an episodic villain-of-the-week. And then, it seems their role got bigger in each continuity/rewrite... probably has something to do with the Silmarils ending up in the title later making it in the sense their story that ends and begins with them. They have zero characterization beyond "fierce and wild" at this point, though in what teetsy bits there is we already have the idea that Maedhros is the leader and Curufin is the smart one/shemer/sweet-talker, though not the bit where Maedhros (or Maglor, or anyone really) is "the nice one". Which I guess explains why "Maglor" sounds like such a stereotypical villain name.
"The Ruin of Doriath" was purportedly the patchworkiest bit of the finished product, but I never noticed and it actually left quite an impression of me upon first reading, the visual of Melian sitting there with Thingol's corpse in her arms contemplating everything thinking back to how they met... she had the knowledge to warn him not to doom himself but couldnt get him to understand it because he doesnt see the world as she does.... After reading this though I wish there was a 'dynamic' rendition that combined all the best bits like, youd have to adapt it to the later canon's rendition of the dwarves, have Nargothrond exist etc. But i mean that just makes Finrod another dead/doomed relative of Thingol's whom bling cannot truly replace, like Luthien and Turin. In the Silmarillion you could easily read it as just an "honoured guest treatment" but here and in unfinished tales I get the impression that Thingol actually did see Turin as a son.
Already you see the idea of trying to make the stories all interconnected but there is less than there will be (the human heroes aren't related yet and there is basically no Nargothrond, which is later a common thread for many of the stories - a prototype shows up in the 'Tale of Turambar' tho complete with half baked prototypes of Orodreth and Finduillas
O boi im not even through yet

Fantastic Retcons and Where to Find them 2: The Misdoings of Grindelwald
Tumblr media
*Sighs* Why, just, why?
Caution, may have spoilers!
I’ll start by saying that while this is by no means an awful movie, it;s still not good.
Visually? Yes it is quite stunning. Except for the beginning where I could barely tell what the hell was going on. Did it really have to be a heavy storm?
Plotwise? It was a mess. If I were to tell someone what this moive is about I could not sum it up in a sentence. And that is bad. The plot should be simple to follow and not a tangled mess of characters and plot threads that go nowhere.
Like, take the plot point of Tina and Newt being awkward with each other. It seemed to so forced, so contrived. Just so that we can have some drama. Same with Jacob and Queenie.
They literally could have resolved the Tina and Newt drama if Newt told her the first time she saw her that he was not marrying Leta. But nooo we have to stretch it.
Characterwise? The same mess.
There were soooo many characters that shouldn’t have been there yet they were.
Nagini? Jus there so people can say ‘Hey isn’t that Voldemort’s snake?’
Nicolas Flamel? He is there so people can remember this film still has some ties with the HP cannon.
Bunty? Just there so we can be told just how popular Newt is with women. I swear she appears out of nowhere, no explanation given as to how the hell Newt decided to get help and why. She swoons over Newt a bit and then disappears as if she were not there in the first place, bearing no significance to the plot whatsoever. And that is the case with a loot of characters.
The woman helping Grindewald? totally irrelevant, he could be working alone but she’s there to be this sort of Bellatrix Lestrange only way less intetesting.  Yusuf Kama? useless and added just for creating drama.
Queenie? well she was just plain stupid. We know Jacob loves her so why the hell did she need to enchant him. Just so he can agree to marry her? I swear it s like we lost about an hour of movie in between Part 1 and Part 1 of Fantastic Beasts. She then has a breakdown, I guess? because she can’t find Tina and because she lost Jacob and has a massive headache from hearing everyone s thoughts and then BAM she is picked up and taken to meet Grindelwald, after which she has a change of heart.
That creepy woman at the french Ministry of Magic was just so out of place. She existed just to have this evil grin on her face and sic her evil cats on Newt and Tina. (ok i know they’re not cats but still).
Side note: it was never explained why Queenie could not find Tina at the french Ministry of Magic. Like TIna is an auror so she should be in their records. unless she was lying? Who cares that subplot takes us nowhere.
There were so many problems in this movie that I honestly have no idea where to start.
First, why the hell is McGonagall a teacher at Hogwars during Leta and Newt’s time if we know she was born in 1935? Just how do you mess that up?
Why is casting Avada Kevadra as easy as taking candy from a kid? In the HP canon this spell is supposed to be incredibly hard to cast and it requires a lot of power from the caster, as well as for them to essentially rip a part of their soul every time they cast it. Yet here they’re casting it like it’s nothing. Even an auror goes as far as to cast it. Oh and all of this is done nonverbally even though we know that only extremely powerful wizards and witches can perform nonverbal magic. But whatever.
Why is the Mirror of Erised showing the past as opposed to showing one’s deepest desire like in the current canon? Dumbledore should not be seeing that scene with him and Grindewald making a blood pact. That’s not how the Mirror of Erised works.
How in the everloving fuck do muggles not notice the giant flying carriage at      the beginning of the movie? One can assume it was enchanted to not be seen but we’re given no indication of that. And on the same note, how the hell did the muggles not question the GIANT cat like monster that was wrecking havoc on their streets? When Newt and the others come out of the sewers we see the beast doing its thing and I don t think that those scared people were wizards. They had cars, they had to be muggles. Wizards don’t have technology like that.
How, just how can Credence be a Dumbledore? Why retcon what we know about the Dumbledore family like that? Where would a forth sibling even fit in? And why did Credence have to be related to one of the major wizarding families. Credence was already interesting, what with having an obscurial, you did not need this subplot movie. I mean fine he can search for his family but in the end he could have learned that it doesn’t matter where he comes from or who he was but who he is now and that he can still be loved and all that. Tossing him around and making it seem like he is a Lestrange only to just mindfuck us at the end and say he is a Dumbledore is just awful.
Many fans are hoping Grindewald is lying and while I kinda hope too because at least we d get rid of this stupid plot point, I am afraid he is not and that it will just be a permanent thing.
What else? Ah, yes!
Well the acting was ok.
Johnny Depp as Grindewald was nothing noteworthy. The movie tried so hard to convince us he was evil that it was becoming cartoony.
Grindewald got rid of his pet. See? See how bad he is?
Grindewald had a baby killed. See? He is evil.
Grindewald killed one of his followers. He is super evil.
Grindewald killed some strangers to take their apartment and then stood outside as their bodies were being taken away in coffins just so that we can see what an evil motherfucker he is.
Goddammit movie WE GET IT he is evil.
But you see the problem is just this. We know Grindewald is an awful person, we don’t need it hammered in like we’re 5 year olds.
I am still upset over the fact that Collin Farrell could not be Grindewald. He would have been amazing at it.
I fee like, while Jonny Depp was not bad, it just felt like another one of his characters where he gets over the top make up and that s it. I would have loved if he looked more normal. I mean with Voldy it made sense he looked weird as fuck, it was his doing. What s Grindewald’s excuse?
Oh and also Zoë Kravitz can’t act. And her backstory about killing her brother was stupid. She did not want to harm him yet she took her infant brother and put him in another room WHILE THE SHIP THEY WERE ON WAS SINKING. Yeah I’m sure you meant well, dear. And another thing: she said that he was crying all the time but...they have magic. Ok, weak magic cus their caretaker was a half-elf but still. Is there no spell that can shut up a baby?
Jude Law was fantastic. Just fantastic.
Also big points for using the original actors for young Dumbledore and Grindewald. Stroke of genius there. Wish we could see more of them.
And now for the last part: the PANDERING
Oh my god the pandering.
We waste time at Hogwarts because the movie wants to pander to its audience namely the HP fans and their nostalgia. Every shot was thought up like that.
See? It’s Hogwarts. remember that?
See? It’s DADA classes. Neat right?
See? Random classroom. Pretty cool right?
See? Random flashback showing parts of Hogwarts and its grounds. Amazing isn’t it?
It didn’t feel like the story needed us to visit Hogwarts. There was no crucial plot point that demanded that. It was just pure nostalgia.
It’s ok to be nostalgic, it’s ok to be happy to see Hogwarts. I was, but that is not the point of this movie. Yet it is. In fact, that’s what they are counting on to keep selling tickets.
Tumblr media
All in all I think it’s a movie who had no idea what it wanted to be so it just was all of it at once.
A lot of characters, a lof of plot threads, a lot of things that just do not add up.
I give it a 5 out of 10.

Oh lord I nearly forgot about the jealousy fem!Dami would get over any Dick love intetest. Damian in canon does not like the idea of Dick having a baby to replace him (his words) and totally got salty with Kori and Bab's when their relationship w/Dick got brought up. Not to mention getting grossed out simply seeing Dick and Shawn hugging. Fem!Dami would definitly be territorial cause she's not giving up her place as Dick most important female person in his life. Not. At. All. It'd be scary.
I’m telling you, that man is not going to get it without a serious fight.
Like, I can see Kory eventually winning Damian over just by being her amazing warrior princess self, and I can also see Damian having some begrudging respect for Barbara after working with her, but like, Shawn?
This new girl who pops up in her brother’s life at a time when Dick’s abandoned Dami to go back to do his own thing alone and vulnerable and away from Dami’s protection (which he so obviously need)? Yeah, not happening.

Least favorite Silmarillion fanfic cliches
Not to have subjective unpopular opinions on main, but
Every. single. pair of twins acts like George and Fred Weasley. (Granted info is sparse on both Ambarussa and the sons of Elrond but what we DO have overwhelmingly suggests "fierce and aloof" instead)
Suburban USA gender roles and social values for no discernible reason - now there is ample reference to in-universe gender roles which can and should be critically engaged with and im all for a mari kondo approach to canon, but once in a while you see something where it seems like the author couldnt imagine what living in a different world would be like for 5 minutes - See the "strict american dad disses artsy or nerdy kid as being unmanly" in a society where musicians and scholars are widely respected and considered "manly" or making a canonically confident character all insecure so some dude can tell her shes pretty because "all teenage girls are insecure of their appesrance". having been a teenage girl i can confirm that we do come with more than 1 personality and as for whats typical well culture & history probably have something to do with that (Note that this does not apply to modern AUs where its explicitly part of the plot)
Fingon as a bland satelite love intetest. He's in a bajillion fics but alas, his characterization isn't. Which is a pity cause hes pretty interesting - deliberately choses to be a friend-to-all in a setting full of backstabbing? Doesnt need to like or agree with someone to see they have a point? Heroic adventurous and charismatic, but ends up implicated in a lethal altercation right out of the gate? Dead younger siblings? Contrasting personality with father and brother? All very juicy but usually ignored. There is very good fic with him including Russingon stuff but its far and in between in an ocean of bland uwu which has made me avoid what is in itself a perfectly fine semi-plausible ship with plenty of potential.
Elrond hating his bio parents - Canonically he's at least pround of their illustrous lineage esp. the one from Doriath. This seems explicitly designed to remove nuance and complexity and also completely destroys the imho very crucial and central aspect of his character where he's very much the sort to face complex situations and unpleasant truths, and advise others to do the same. If anyone can see the flaws in someone but also the good sides at the same time its him. Its one thing if the fic is set when hes much younger but some give him the maturity of a 14 year old after arriving in Valinor post lotr
Any kind of shallowtakes where dynamic gray chatacters are completely flattened (yes this very much means the Feanorians, but you know who else? Thingol)
