ok ur top faves wangxian fics go
hey yati! 🥰️
alright, so first things first, here’s a big wangxian fic rec list i made a while ago, if you wanna check that one out too! consider the list below part 2. these are all my faves so far since my last rec list (as you'll quickly see, i have a LOT of faves).
and just a fyi/psa/disclaimer for anyone reading this: some of these fics have disturbing themes and/or kinky/freaky sex! make sure to check the authors’ tags and notes before reading. also, much like my first rec list, there’s going to be a mix of mdzs and cql canon, characterizations, dynamics, etc., so bear that in mind.
....ok GO
live from new york by varnes | rated E | 87K words | THE snl au fic!!!! yes, by snl i mean saturday night live. this is perhaps the best and funniest story i've ever read, period. varnes is a fucking genius. read this fic.
Wei Ying lets out a long, ugly groan. “I am fine, Lan Zhan. Everybody is overreacting, it’s so embarrassing for all of you.”
“You had undiagnosed pneumonia, which you walked around with for weeks until you passed out during dress,” Lan Wangji corrects him. “It got a big laugh, until everyone thought you were dead.”
He keeps his voice even and does not tell Wei Ying that it had been Lan Wangji who caught him, who called the ambulance, and who rode with him to the hospital, where he was yelled at by nurses who wanted to know why he hadn’t noticed that Wei Ying couldn’t stop shivering or string proper sentences together.
“Rumors of my demise have been vastly overstated,” Wei Ying says. “Anyway, I’m already feeling much better. Basically fine. Really almost completely back to normal, so stop babying me and tell me why the fuck you let your stupid brother hire the worst man in the world to host our show.”

OR: the one where they all work at SNL, Yanli's ex-boyfriend is hosting, and that's just the beginning of everybody's problems.
swiss cheese theory by varnes | rated M | 19K words | sequel to snl au fic!!!!!! another must-read.
The Swiss Cheese model of accident causation likens human system defences to a series of slices of randomly-holed Swiss Cheese arranged vertically and parallel to each other with gaps in-between each slice. Defences against failure are modelled as a series of barriers, represented as slices of the cheese. The holes in the cheese slices represent individual weaknesses in individual parts of the system. The system as a whole produces failures when holes in all of the slices momentarily align, permitting "a trajectory of accident opportunity," so that a hazard passes through holes in all of the defences, leading to an accident.
OR: Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian go to the courthouse.
OR: “Sweethearts,” the city clerk had said, very gently, “you’re already married.”
best friends forever by varnes | rated T | 17K words | alright, so like, strictly speaking, wangxian isn't the focus of this fic, BUT. this fic is so good!! it is seriously so good, and it made me fall in love with jin ling/lan jingyi. also, it's varnes, so read it!
It happened like this: Jin Ling was a sect leader now, which was, and Jingyi really meant this, fucking hilarious. There were few things funnier, in his honest opinion.
Because he was young, and inexperienced, and also — it had to be said — a real shithead, there was apparently some belief amongst his advisors that the best way forward, to promote the picture of a stable, mature sect leader who absolutely did not cry at the drop of a hat, was for Jin Ling to get married.
-
OR: Jin Ling and Jingyi get engaged.
Things spiral from there.
For a Good Time, Call by ScarlettStorm | rated E | 171K words
The picture is of Wei Ying, that much is clear. It’s of a lot more of Wei Ying than Lan Zhan is used to seeing. He supposes that, technically, Wei Ying is dressed. It’s a bare technicality, since one of Wei Ying’s hands has rucked up his black tank top practically to his collarbone, showing a long expanse of abdomen and one nipple. Sweat beads on his sternum, catching the light like jewels. His other hand is--Lan Zhan feels his eyes widen, as though unable to look away from a train wreck--on his hip, one thumb tugging down the waistband of a pair of red briefs. Wei Ying is biting his lower lip and looking directly into the camera, sultry, his eyes dark and inviting. His erection is obvious, outlined against the red of the briefs and framed carefully with the hand on his hip. Lan Zhan’s brain goes wildly, screamingly blank.
Or: Lan Zhan accidentally finds his best friend's OnlyFans account and has an ongoing emotional crisis.

"You want Wen Ruohan dead," the Patriarch continued idly. "You want his corpse puppets eliminated. You want his halls burned to the ground and his soldiers disemboweled and begging for mercy. Have I about covered it?"
He gave another knife-edged smile.
"But what will you give me in return?"
"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."
The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan."
(In which the Sunshot Campaign ends through an arranged marriage to the Yiling Patriarch, and Lan Wangji suffers the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband.)
how to fall in love with a catfish: a guide by wei wuxian (disaster rat) by bwyn & Yuisaki | rated T | 55K words
A new plan hatches in Wei Wuxian’s head. If this nocturnal, bottom-feeding, slimy, invasive mudcat posing as a beautiful actor thinks he can sway Wei Wuxian with animal pictures and a sob story and an unbelievably stilted way of texting with still no dick pictures in the first five minutes of conversation, he has another thing coming. Wei Wuxian’s got it, alright, he has this in the fucking bag.

Wei Wuxian plots to expose a catfish using strategic memes and turtle pictures while wiggling his way out of family dinner. Lan Wangji just wants companions.

Jiang Cheng stares at him. “Didn’t you say you broke up five months ago?”
“Yeah.”
“So why do you have a picture of you two kissing taped to your fridge?”
“Because we’re too broke for magnets,” Wei Wuxian explains, then considers that statement. “Well, I’m too broke for magnets. Lan Zhan probably refuses to buy them because he’s trying to have lofty ideas about the moral failings of materialism.”

To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.
What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.
“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”
Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.

"Betrothed," Wei Ying says indignantly.
Lan Wangji can't stop his gaze from darting up to him. Wei Ying understands. Wei Ying is looking at him, wide-eyed and upset on his behalf.
"And you don't even like her," Wei Ying says.
"I don't even know her," Lan Wangji says quietly.
"But even if you did—" Wei Ying starts.
"I wouldn't want this," Lan Wangji finishes.

"Who do you think your betrothed is?" Wei Wuxian asks, sprawling out in front of Lan Zhan and enjoying the prim thinning of his lips at the question. He shouldn't be sprawling—they're in the library, for one, and Lan Zhan is studying, for another—but he can't help himself. Wei Wuxian is a sprawler.
"I do not believe this to be of importance," Lan Zhan responds, without turning his gaze away from his book.
"What!" Wei Wuxian sits up. "How can you say that? Of course it's important! This is the person you'll be with for the rest of your life, Lan Zhan."

“First, you get the money. Then you get the power, respect - hos come last.”
Wen Qing traps Wei Wuxian in the Demon Slaughtering Cave, but Wei Wuxian isn’t interested in being the beneficiary of the Wen Remnants’ noble sacrifice. His efforts to free himself accidentally send him back to the beginning of the Sunshot Campaign. Coreless but armed with demonic cultivation, knowledge of the future and his wits, Wei Wuxian takes advantage of this opportunity to come out on top of both the war and its aftermath—before either has a chance to happen—by marrying and swiftly burying the cultivation world’s worst men.
Lan Wangji is confused, hurt, and uncomfortably aroused by Wei Wuxian’s improbably elaborate series of Sect-themed bridal negligees.

The resentful energy occupying Wei Wuxian's body like an enemy army is very interested in giving him Lan Wangji, tied up with a bow.
Wei Wuxian is hoping that Lan Wangji (who is far too noble and very keen to save Wei Wuxian's misguided soul) doesn't find out about any aspect of that.

Lan Zhan is silent for a long moment, and the van's speakers quietly pipe the second song on the album into the empty space between them. Then Lan Zhan shifts his hand a little on Wei Ying's leg, presses his fingers once into the meat of his thigh. "Alright," he says.
"Alright," Wei Ying echoes in a wheeze.
"Is that better?" Lan Zhan checks, because he is a good boy. Then he spreads his fingers out a little wider, because he is evil and must be stopped.

The Roots Grow Riotous by hansbekhart | rated E | 105K words | a beautifully crafted, emotionally harrowing fic. i should warn you (since it's not quite tagged as such) that while wangxian is endgame, the overall story doesn't have the sort of happily-ever-after ending you might expect. i’ve seen it described as open-ended but hopeful and cathartic, which i find to be a pretty accurate assessment
Sometimes Lan Zhan doesn’t work through lunch. Sometimes he makes conversation with coworkers in the halls. Sometimes he goes home instead of spending the last hour trawling through Grindr. But mostly, that’s exactly what he does. The sameness is comforting. His life spools out in easily measured increments: capsule collections, yards of hand dyed textiles, ninety day lead times, sell through figures, cost of goods sold.
Every date in manufacturing can be calculated backwards and forward from a single horizon point: the date that the goods must arrive into the country where they'll be sold. Other than that, nothing else really matters.

That’s just the thing, isn’t it? Wei Ying feels nothing. He doesn’t feel anything, and this emptiness should scare him. He knows he should be scared. He wants to be scared. He isn’t. Fear itself is never scary; fear is just a response. It means that your body wants you alive. It’s the absence of terror that scares him.

Wei Wuxian has certainly hoped so ardently in his two lifetimes, for so many different things, in so many different ways, that he could have summoned the demon to his front door with his bare hands. From my heart's ground. by orange_crushed | rated E | 38K words | get (orange) CRUSHED!!!!!!!
After a while he can feel a palm against his face, gentle fingers soft and soothing. It’s not real, not exactly: he can tell the difference between a ghost’s touch and a living person’s, between a spirit-vision and an overactive imagination. His education has been thorough. But the beating has also been thorough, so for now he forgets what he knows and leans into it, into the hand cupping his cheek. It’s soft and dry as those forgotten petals, as the touch of a pillow. He can smell wildflowers, can taste blood and dirt. My baby, his mother says, and he closes his eyes. My treasure. He barely remembers the sound of her voice, but the feeling of it is just the same. Just the same as ever.

When Wangji was eighteen he’d walked into the first class of his fall semester painting module and there’d been a boy in a hilariously ugly floppy knit hat sitting cross-legged on the floor at the front of the room. He’d had a sheet of canvas paper taped to his board and his board clamped between his legs and a tackle box of brushes and tubes—a real fishing tackle box, with a fish-shaped logo on it that said BASS, not one of the nice art supply storage boxes they sold in the campus bookstore, like the one Wangji was carrying—open beside him. Everyone else had settled into the rows of stools and easels, but that boy had stayed on the floor for the whole two hour and thirty minute studio. Wangji had looked at him and thought, that idiot’s back is going to hurt.

"It's good," Wangji says. "You look good."
"I guess I must," Wei Ying says, and then he smiles and bites his teeth into his bottom lip for a second, devastatingly, and before Wangji can drop dead the doors to the elevator slide open, and the hostess station appears.

“Stop mothering me,” Wei Ying protests. “Why don’t you ever listen?” He scowls at Wangji, but then the lure of the clean water is too much; he sits grumbling and strips off his vambraces and loosens the collar of his robes and wipes himself down in the steam. Wangji sits on a stool and watches him, and after a while Wei Ying slaps the rag into the bowl and glares back. “Are you going to sit and stare the whole time?” he demands. “You want to see me strip naked and give my filthy evil self a good scrubbing, huh?”
Yes, Wangji thinks.

Moderately Rare Untamed/MDZS Fic Recs
For when you find fic from sorting by kudos, but you’ve got tag fatigue and you want to read something new. Or, hey, maybe you just want some MDZS fic recs. I’m not here to judge. * means it’s incomplete, for those of you that care.
Obligatory WangXian Category:
crack in the mirror by the_pretzel*: The premise of this one is that Wei Wuxian gets transported from the modern world into a mystery novel series, set in ancient China. But he’s in the body of a character that’s about to get married, and then murdered by his husband. So he breaks the engagement by starting a new one with Lan Wangji and then the first chapter ends. This one is a rollercoaster. WWX soon discovers that his character’s been keeping secrets, and he’s got to figure them out if he wants to get out of this alive. If there was a best drama award for fics, this one would get it. Every chapter has me on the edge of my seat in a different way, as WWX gets out of one mess only to find himself in a bigger one. And that doesn’t even touch on the romance - this is one of the ones where you can just about feel all the pining LWJ is doing, even though it’s WWX pov and he’s oblivious to all of it. Honestly, this fic is the reason this rec list exists.
set your old heart free series by words-writ-in-starlight: Do you like crying? I like crying. That’s why I’m recommending this series to you, so you can cry too! I’m putting this under WangXian, because it’s a story about Lan Wangji and you can’t really have LWJ without the pining, but the real core of the story is the family LWJ has built in Cloud Recesses. Lan Shizui and Lan Xichen, and eventually (because this series starts just after WWX dies - what, I did say I liked crying) Wei Wuxian joins in. There’s even a little Wen Ning! If you like having feelings and also any of the characters I’ve mentioned, like, at all, this series is worth checking out.
The Terminus of Gravity by sealdog: Every fandom needs a space opera au, and sealdog delivers. This is pretty much a strait transportation of the plot of canon to the future and also space, with a side of epistolary and Wen remnants family time, and I’ll stop there because I don’t really want to spoil it. I’m a huge sucker for melancholy and pining and also well written space operas, because even if the premise isn’t your game, it is well written, and it’s worth a read.
Tales from Bunny Mountain by telarna: Lan sect turns into bunnies because of an excess of yin ener- look, we get Lan Zhan as a bunny with bonus Lan Shizui as a bunny. Do you really care why? This is another one of those fics that’s in the WangXian section because if LWJ and WWX are in a fic together, some things just come naturally, but the real draw for me is- well, I’m not going to lie, most of the draw was LWJ as a bunny, but I stayed with the fic for Jin Ling. Good Jin Ling characterization and a lovely, mischievous WWX, who also happens to be a very good uncle. And we have Lan sect as bunnies. Terrible, troublesome bunnies. 11/10, a must read.
through a window softly by impossibletruths: Okay, finally, we finish off the WangXian section with a fic that is actually about WangXian, not just featuring it prominently. through a window softly is a college au where LWJ and WWX are two different types of music major and also neighbors. WWX plays flute and LWJ plays violin and sometimes they stand outside their apartments and play together and pine for the mystery person that’s playing music with them. Look, they fall in love through playing music together, I’ve been looking for a fic like this since WWX first pulled out his flute in canon. There’s misunderstandings and identity porn, if you need some excellent bonus reasons to click this one, and I enjoyed both of those immensely. But what I really, truly loved was WangXian and love and music, and the intersection of all three.
Nie Huaisang: gen edition. Because I have a favorite character and that’s your problem now.
Mistakes We Made by Rachel3*: Nie Huaisang travels back in time and decides to prevent his brother’s death. This is the Nie Huaisang fic for me. I love love love his characterization here. Rachel3 strikes the delicate balance between the sweet kid he once was and the mastermind he grows up to be, making him competent but not an OP genius and sympathetic but not, like, a very good person. The plot is complex and realistic, tackling the sort of complex struggles (both interpersonal and large scale) that time travel fics very rarely bother with. If you've ever been curious about NHS, if you’ve ever even wanted to know him slightly better, this is the fic for you.
The Lost Cause by KouriArashi: AU in which Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao work together to take down Jin Guangshan from the beginning. I recommended the last fic for good characterization. I can’t in good conscience say the same for this fic, but that’s kind of the point. If you’re tired of moderation and realism and just want someone to take the hammer and fix canon already, this is the story for you. It’s hilarious and cathartic, and manages to be totally lighthearted even though it’s 100% about murder and manipulation.
say those words (it’s not forgotten) by paranoid_fridge: This is edging on too well known for this list, but hey! My recs, my rules. And this is an absolute must read for everyone ever. If you haven’t read it, you should, and if you have read it, you can probably stand to do it again. This is a story about Nie Huaisang’s birthday. It’s a slice of life story, and a character study, and a little bit of a feel good hurt comfort fic, and it does all of those things magnificently. The author tags every relationship in this fic except the one braincell trio, which is a shame because it really is a NHS & WWX & JC fic, and if you weren’t craving one of those then why are you in this fandom? Why are you on my reclist?
SangCheng is my OTP and that is also your problem:
best behavior by inberin: I might as well take this space to recommend the whole sangcheng revenge au (dancing ashes under the sun (will cast their shadow when the winds rise) by paranoid_fridge really is the fic for it, but it’s too well known to make this list). The premise is simple, Jiang Cheng lost his golden core, the Wens won, and Nie Huaisang is taking them down from the inside with JC as his right hand man. best behavior makes the list for JC and NHS trolling each other (my favorite part of any sangcheng fic), and the lovely angst of two teenagers who grew up much too fast. The writing style of this one is lovely and poetic, the imagery is on point, and the sangcheng chemistry is the best.
Of Trespassing and Table Slams by LiteralistSin: I’ve put a fluffy fic in every category so far, and it’s SangCheng’s turn. There’s not much plot to this one, just SangCheng trying to outmaneuver each other and NHS being a little shit, and JC getting to win for once. Oh, yeah, and NHS gets kissed on a table. Everything my SangCheng loving heart needs.
everything rynleaf has ever written:  I’m putting this one under sangcheng because rynleaf has three sangcheng fics, and I couldn’t pick just one. Really though, you should at least check out What Remains of Meng Yao too, if you like crying. The sangcheng fics all strike the lovely balance between sangcheng tension and trolling each other and really truly sincerely caring about each other beneath all of it. Rynleaf writes some of the sweetest Jiang Cheng you ever did see, even when you’re looking through NHS’ jaded eyes. NHS is great here too, in all his secrets and his magnificent bastardry, you can just feel the smug smile he’s got on in every scene.
our footsteps sing a reckless serenade by ThirtySixSaveFiles: Because I cannot believe this one has so few kudos. Seriously, it’s a 46,000 word long modern with magic au where Jiang Cheng and NHS have an arranged marriage and fall in love. And that’s not even getting into the intrigue and the secrets NHS is keeping, and the murder mystery- There’s a lot of reasons to love this fic, and you definitely want to read it and discover all of them.

When they reached the water, Lan Wangji turned to face him, saying nothing.
“Oh, fine.” Wei Wuxian gave him an exasperated look—as if Lan Wangji were the unreasonable one—and kept walking, toward a stretch of boulders along a bend in the riverbank. “Will your delicate sensibilities remain unassaulted if I bathe over here?”
Lan Wangji merely waited. With a final eyeroll, Wei Wuxian disappeared around the bend, already untying his belt as he went.
“The Lan Clan is so prudish,” he said.

Maybe, Wei Wuxian muses, he shouldn't have brought up Lan ancestors and traditions as references.

His soulmate, whom he doesn't love.
I am lonely for you by protos_metazu_ison (11K, Teen)

Lan Zhan's voice is small, barely audible. "In the beginning?"
And then, louder, "Wei Ying…...had a crush on me? I thought - your brother often says things to rile people up."
Wei Ying wants to sink into the floor at his own foolish oversight. Of course, Lan - Gossip is forbidden - Zhan wouldn't take a drunk person, let alone Jiang Cheng at his word.

Lan Zhan frowns and looks down. "That," he says, then stops. Something cold trickles down the back of his neck. "That is a ring." His eyes automatically go to Wei Ying's left hand, where… "Wei Ying."
Wei Ying, being the brilliant man that he is, is already ahead of him. "Holy shit."
Lan Zhan clears his throat.

okay. @akindofmagictoo shall we dance? I can barely move. I’m moving my fingers to construct this post. it’s what I’ve got.
wispy (summon story - I wrote this part and it was nothing, and now it even has a plot. what is happening anymore)
Grimes still couldn’t portray emotion but she could color her words nicely. “You moth-headed moldwarp, what did I just say about power? Even though you might be able to design the array perfectly, a Shidha is more than capable of tricking you into letting it out of it. And I’m not stupid enough to get us both in trouble by trying it.” She shook her head again, the bones of her neck sliding back and forth. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that.”
Shae spat her annoyance onto the summoning array and it winked out of existence. “You don’t.”
“Ah, you got me, right down to my bones,” Grimes howled before leaping back up to the roof. “Be careful, or that’s all you’ll have, too.”
The ground was charred a little where the circular glyphs had been. A single wisp of red smoke curled upward from the edges of the last word, which glowed faintly before disappearing. Shae hadn’t even finished it.
eerie (blood curse - I love posting these excerpts even though I know they don’t make sense to the casual reader. it’s like, look, Sleepy, you write nice fic. write also nice not fic, huh?)
The sounds of two flutes battling for control of the corpses around them hurt his ears and his heart, but Jiang Cheng didn’t have a heart, so that was no problem. What was more of a problem was that Jin Ling had just disappeared with the noisy Lan boy and even if they were capable of protecting themselves, he would probably never stop worrying about Jin Ling no matter how old or skilled the boy got. Except, no, he was not worried, because he didn’t have feelings.
He skewered a corpse, ducking around Wei Wuxian to slash at another two approaching them from the other side. “What are you doing? Surely you’re better than this aspiring demonic cultivator.” That wasn’t a compliment, because Jiang Cheng didn’t compliment anyone.
Wei Wuxian managed to roll his eyes while still playing his eerie tune.
twist (summon story - see, now this made me do a little editing)
“I can’t believe you summoned a Shidha in your first week.” Zan polished his twin daggers, probably staring at Shae a little too intensely. “No wonder you have so much power.”
Shae shook her head, mouth twisting into a regretful grimace. “No, see, I-” she visibly winced.
“I made an array to summon a drakis, but I erased it. When the Shidha showed up, Grimes and I had no idea how it slipped through. A Shidha can’t be summoned without an immaculate array, so there must have been one left withering on that spot that was never cleared. The combination of the arrays could have formed a crack. I did check the ground before I traced my own array, but if the blood isn’t scorched then,” Shae shook her head again, her cheek caught between her teeth. “I don’t know. Shidha are crafty, and I was even more inexperienced then.”
Zan felt his eyes growing wide.
scream (anxiety story 1 - oh Sleepy, remember how you wanted to finish a draft this year?
“We’ll work our way through the chaos and find whatever it is you’re looking for. And while we’re doing it, I’ve got you.”
“Okay.” Aiden knew he couldn’t answer anything else. There was nothing else he wanted to answer anyway. Ree made him want to say okay to all the good things even though his heart screamed that good things weren’t real. But Ree was real and if he was sure about anything, it was that Ree was good. “Okay,” he said again, stronger.
lesson (blood series supplemental - the things you’ll write for excuse to give a character a hug)
“I’m going.” Then Senior Lin hugs him and it’s so embarrassing and Jin Ling loves her hugs so much but did she have to do this right here, right now, seriously, his family was the worst sometimes. “Be good.”
“I’m always good,” Jin Ling says, giving in to temptation and rolling his eyes. “Don’t you have my uncle to kill? Go away.”
Senior Lin goes, and his advisers shift in their chairs as they wonder what to say after that. Jin Ling picks up the lesson plan and clears his throat. “So like I was saying…”
liken likely (summon story - at this point all my stories have scenes that are randomly in present tense)
Ghand slides his eyes over to catch his, the accompanying expression somewhere between pitying and unruffled. “She believes that you were forced to do it.”
“I, I mean,” Dair scrambles for something to say that will bring back his usual persona, but the remaining scraps of it are already eluding him, washing away with the rain on the road. “She doesn’t, that is I, what does it matter?”
Ghand has finished the bandaging and now merely crouches in front of him, face closed but non-judgmental, which is somehow so much worse. “I suppose it doesn’t. She would likely seek to save you regardless.”
“I killed her brother.”
lift (youth story - @ashen-crest see? he still gets to eat his whipped cream. Daniel wouldn’t deprive him of such a treat. he adores Nyks.)
Daniel gave Nyks a spoon to continue eating his hot chocolate with and lifted one eyebrow. “I have to make up for your deficit, clearly.”
“I do not lack personality,” Evie said. She brought her hand down onto the table with just enough force to jostle Nyks’ mug slightly.
He peered up at her, unperturbed. “Clearly,” he repeated, slurping his drink. “Alright. So you have a personality. Daniel just has to make up for your not showing it all the time.”
leaf (the first paragraph is a prompt I found, and wrote a little answer to it)
You are the world’s greatest detective, but your 100% success rate is making you feel suspicious. Recently, you have barely been putting any effort in and occasionally blindly guessing who the criminal was. Yet you are still at 100%.
“Oh,” you say one morning in the middle of watering your plants. The aloe whines when you pause, a long leaf batting at your arm until you finish the job.
You look down at where your roommate’s cat is rubbing on your legs. “They’re a witch, aren’t they.”
@oh-no-another-idea @no-url-idea-tho @writing-with-melon @chayscribbles @vivian-is-writing @talesofsorrowandofruin (because then someone can understand the blood snippets) OR ANYBODY: personality, presumptuous(or presume, I guess), promptly, penultimate (or pointy), personal.

I can't find medium blues by dark_and_terrible anywhere. does anyone knows what happened to it? has anyone got it downloaded?
Oh, no!  I liked that one, and it was only just finished iirc.  It’s not on the Wayback Machine, but I checked the author’s blog and they’ve put the link to a gdoc in this post.
Evidently there was harassment?  Goddammit, didn’t we go over this when we lost so many stories after Rikke’s terrible experience?  What the fuck is there to harass someone over?  IT’S FANFICTION.  FICTION.  More than that, IT’S FREE.  Settle the fuck down and demonstrate the manners your mama taught you.  Christ.

Medium Blues
by dark_and_terrible
E, 195k, wangxian
Summary:  Wei Wuxian is down on his luck.
He’s probably the only legit medium in the city of Lotus, able to contact all manner of dearly deceased spirits and gaggles of ghosts. Still, he makes his living off of bunk palm readings and crystal ball tricks, and it’s barely enough to keep him going. Wei Wuxian is broke. And, he’s about to be very down on his luck. A plague of suspicious hauntings brings him to the attention of the Bureau of Investigation, but he has no idea how involved in it he will be until he meets…
Lan Wangji is the youngest detective in the Bureau, with one of the highest closure rates within recent years’ records. He’s sharp and obsessive, which lends well to his work with investigating. The one thing he can’t account for is ghosts, and he’s a constant skeptic when it comes to the question of their presence…that is, until, he meets Wei Wuxian. They’re thrown together by way of crossing paths in an investigation, but after Lan Wangji’s eyes are opened to the fact that his culprit might not be fully of the flesh, he finds Wei Wuxian more indispensable than he ever thought he would.
Everybody needs a good partner.
Since I only finished the story a few weeks ago, I haven’t had a chance to officially rec it, but here are my tags and comments:
My comments:  Intricate and plot-heavy, this is a ghost and horror-filled case fic. Wei Wuxian is a medium, even though most of his family don't believe it (there's history there, that is slowly revealed), and his life is turned upside-down when a grinning, toothless woman begins haunting him. And sometimes attacking him. The whistle he wears around his neck can make her go away, but only for a while. He's arrested by Lan Wangji for acting suspicious and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it slowly turns into a partnership. Wen Qing comes on board, too, after asking wwx to find her brother.
Spirits and frightening imagery abound (Author writes in a very visual fashion), and it's not light on gore, either. The teenagers get sucked in, and there's something... different about Wen Yuan, who sometimes shows up at sleepovers with Jin Ling with bruises and a distant gaze. The more time wwx and lwj spend together, the more they feel like there was a history, and have dreams about a time long ago when they were Stygian and Monk but it ended badly. And sometimes wwx feels like he's going down that same dark road.
Story's a wild ride, with a tense climax and happy ending.

JGY or WWX?
I feel like a fair disclaimer to give before getting to Wei Wuxian is that I watched the Untamed despite, not because of, wangxian! I originally checked out the beginning of the animated series because someone I followed was getting into it, but I already had an inkling that the main romantic relationship in this romance wouldn’t be my cup of tea. The Untamed followed, more than half a year later, really only because I had hit the gorgeous soundtrack on youtube.
How I feel about this character Part of the reason I presumed I wouldn’t be into wangxian was because neither of the main players really spoke to me, and on this account I am happy to have been proven wrong! When I finished the show, Wei Wuxian was probably my favorite character. There's something very satisfying about a surface-level heroic main character hitting his absolute lowest points and starting to be actively harmful to himself and others. “This is all I’ve ever wanted for the class clown type of character”, I think I said at some point. Let it all burn.
I go back and forth on whether I find the flightier parts of his personality charming or annoying, but it’s a spectrum. The Untamed version is my favorite, character-wise.
All the people I ship romantically with this character Nie Huaisang, in the sense that, what with their roles in the plot, it would be fascinating to see how things would play out if this was the main romance, instead. Especially because romance would not be Nie Huaisang’s priority. What would the relationship trajectory even be, teenage sweethearts, ending with a definitive breakup by the finale? I've never sat down with the idea long enough to do anything with it, but sometimes it comes back to me. The main reason I'm into it is because hey, it's the main character & the main driving force behind the story! this is an intellectual puzzle to work out!, but they also had nice, easy chemistry when they were young and seemed to enjoy each other's company, which was something that was... not present in the actual main ship as far as I could see, and apparently my only kink is obvious mutual interest and stability in a relationship. I don't think they really had romantic/sexual chemistry in particular, but hey.
Wen Ning. I just think ningxian is cute. Also has lots of potential for difficult and uncomfortable exploration re: consent and autonomy.
But I think at the end of the day, the only relationship he has that just by the actual shape of it would be something I'd be interested in seeing turn into a romantic and/or sexual relationship is with Wen Qing, which, uh. Yeah. The fond push-and-pull, the two leaders, it’s good stuff. Just a physical relationship during their hunkering together time would be fun, too.
My non-romantic OTP for this character Jiang Cheng. I remember originally being pretty peeved about the fact that the romance (censored or not) is treated as the main focus when the Yunmeng duo is, to me, the real heart of the story. Let Lan Wangji be a supporting character.
I'm not sure if I really want a reconciliation between them, personally, but I want to note that it’s not because I think it would be fundamentally impossible, or because one or both of the characters is genuinely better off without the other. I think it would be very good for them if they managed some sort of genuine healing together!
I don’t want a reconciliation because thinking about their complete and total failure to communicate and consequently never making up makes me experience genuine agony in a very satisfying way. I have in the past gone into people's tags for the two of them and managed to work myself into a sobbing mess within five minutes. It is extremely cathartic.
My unpopular opinion about this character That time when he walks into a Jin party and starts throwing threats 3-2-1, part of me is going “fuck yeah” and part of me is looking at all the collateral damage servants trying to stay out of the way in the background, who never asked to be terrorized by this very powerful man. It’s not something that makes me dislike the character in any way or form, as stated before if anything it just makes him more interesting to me, I just don’t think that it was an uncomplicatedly ‘cool’ moment.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon The man should be actually responsible for his own misdeeds. I’ve heard people say that this was a censorship thing, but I have no sources on that.
And A-Yao gets to go under a read more.
How I feel about this character Continuing down the nostalgia lane, my initial reactions were “this man smiles very deliberately” and, towards the end, “man, fuck the gentry, you should get to win”.
I, hm. It feels sometimes like there are two kinds of opinions that fans have, and I don’t connect with either of them! There’s the “this character is an unrepentant asshole and I’m proud of that, you don’t need to make up sympathetic motivations for villains” which, while I agree that he can justify a lot to himself, just doesn’t ring true to me. I think that many of his actions were either forced by the circumstances, or understandable, or sympathetic and made with decent intentions, or not particularly bad compared to shit that other characters and their society as a whole gets to.
Obviously there are all these breakdowns about the specific acts of altruism that he does that in-universe are rare from someone that high up in power, and those are great, but even without all of that, he was a stable, peaceful, competent ruler who wasn’t doing any large-scale nasty shit after a series of complete nightmares on the throne, and upsetting that long-standing balance should bring about repercussions for several social classes that does more harm than anything he was individually doing at any point.
As for the other take, there’s the “oh no he’s so small and so cute and should be pampered so much” which I don’t... get, emotionally, and additionally it is reaaal hard for me to see the character as someone who either wants or would even particularly enjoy being the one being taken care of. Usually my response is-
There’s that part during Nie Mingjue’s capture in Empathy where he’s just, running the whole show? Like, on one hand it is very important that he’s probably the weakest person in the room, and might lose in a direct confrontation against even the random soldiers standing to the sides, and if he plays his cards wrong or even sub-optimally one of the two big strong cultivators in his vicinity is going to pulverize him, and also aware of all of this at all times and living in low-key terror. But also -- he pulled it off.
If I’m working myself toward some emotional response with “A-Yao small” it doesn’t end with “someone should hold him 🥺” but with “and doesn’t that just make it all the sweeter that he sat on that throne”. (I have two kinks, and the other one is power reversal.)
All the people I ship romantically with this character Only Lan Xichen, really, but there are some tentative side paths to take!
Qin Su, in that the initial attraction would be fun to explore, and then it becomes less about the relationship dynamic and more about the underlying horror.
Nie Huaisang, in a not-particularly-serious, one-sided, never-happened-and-now-it-never-will kind of way. The ideal would be Jin Guangyao thinking of Nie Huaisang as a tiring but cute little brother figure (he doesn't have those, all of his family relationships sans mom take a weird turn at some point! this one sure is about to!), while Nie Huaisang has a lil crush, and then it goes all the way to hell. ...And I know that I set “won’t happen” as a precondition, but I guess if there was a character who keeps the (fierce or not) corpse of the late Chief Cultivator close in an effort to feel alive post-canon, Nie Huaisang is the one I’d want for that role.
Jiang Cheng, because that family unit is so under-explored in canon, and because out of a handful of favorite characters these two are usually my number one, so watching them interact with each other can be fun just because of that. But in my heart of hearts I want Jiang Cheng to stay forever single by choice, and really I'm just here for platonic family shenanigans with Jin Ling. (I've written some of this, but out of everything it's probably the least likely to ever see the light of day.)
But really only Lan Xichen. When I was watching the early episodes and didn't remember the characters well and in my head these two were only “the disturbingly handsome older brother” and “a bit part soldier (lol) from some other sect” I really imprinted on that goodbye scene, like damn, look at these characters who are friendly with each other and showing obvious interest. It's only the circumstances that are getting in the way! If I were to ever read fic from this show, it would be these two. (This was all a counter-reaction to early wangxian haha.) But increasingly it goes to show that what I'm really into is people having mutual and mutually recognized affection for each other, the negotiated part in the relationship being less about whether it'll happen and more about how to go about it. More romances that start with getting together instead of ending there.
I am laughing at my past self here though, after actually finishing the show my thoughts on xiyao were that it was nice that it was both there and stable (until, you know) and unknowable, whatever the shape of their relationship in private they are aware of it and have made their peace with it, and that's all I need to know, and now I'm sitting here with several WIPs, wondering if this is what finally pushes me to start publishing fanfiction.
My non-romantic OTP for this character Lan Xichen. No, I’m not interested in a non-romantic* read on their relationship, yes, I just want him here, too.
Also, the only other relationships of note here are with Meng Shi, Jin Ling and Qin Su, and using ‘non-romantic OTP’ for any of those feels off to me. Meng Shi and Jin Ling are at too much of an uneven level, Qin Su doesn’t reach OTP levels even if the romantic filter is off. Su Minshan and Xue Yang might be a better fit, but again, OTP level is too high. Early-canon Nie Huaisang... maybe.
*non-sexual is fine. never officially getting together w/mutual acknowledgement is fine.
My unpopular opinion about this character I think I already went off, so. The hat is fine, and the hate sounds performative and weirdly ignorant at times. I don't love the Untamed version, but it’s fine and the ones in other adaptations are fantastic, even. The warm yellow-brown combination looks really nice. More of the characters should wear hats, actually! Which I realize is an opinion influenced by historical Japanese and Korean dramas, which are of a different genre altogether (also not Chinese, but hats in official settings are a constant in all of these cultures). Nevertheless.
I wish it was used only post-timeskip in the Untamed, too, though, for more variety in costuming and to further differentiate the pre- and post-timeskip versions of the character.
...................................and a specific xiyao pet peeve also: I am becoming increasingly wary of the... either super common or I just happen to keep finding these, take where he’s some sort of unwilling/particularly hesitant participant in this relationship. Like I went back to watch parts of episode 4 (to figure out why it was that I was so sure Meng Yao would be swinging a sword around in future episodes and my conclusion is: because everyone else was swinging theirs) and even the initial interactions in the goodbye scene are like-
Meng Yao literally runs up to a guy waaay out of his league like “Hello I am bringing myself Forth because I have the audacity to assume you might Personally Want to Know that I am leaving and here are some pretty personal reasons why (gosh you really are lovely)”
Reactions I’ve seen to this: look at the little dude running away from his emotions
Me: w h a t
And then the natural conclusion here is that Lan Xichen is there to love him (with his dick and/or sunny personality) until he’s forced to accept it [serene face emoji] and it makes me. Not enjoy it much.
Ofc this doesn’t include normal human hesitations one might have about... anything and everything in life, really, but when it’s treated like this automatic character/relationship hurdle I’m just hhhh
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon I'm pretty satisfied with things as they stand? Just like the relationship between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian makes me feel cathartic agony, Jin Guangyao's fate makes me feel cathartic rage. Look at the low-born bastard child go down the stairs of life, one last time!
......Sometimes I have my weak moments and do wish he had gotten away in the end, though.

Wen Qing has been alive the entire time, and Jiang Cheng is the last to find out. What does our disaster boy do? And what does Wen Qing do when he produces the comb again out of nowhere (a la Chenqing in episode 50)?
Jiang Cheng grit his teeth and sighed as he wandered through the crowded streets of Yiling. Since the first siege, the people regarded him with an understandable wariness and unease. He could feel the eyes bearing into the dark violet fabric of his cloak, trying not to watch as a mother huddled her child closer to her side and out of his way. It was easy to forget at sometimes that most outside of Yunmeng and Lanling feared him to some degree. With all the lofty titles and accolades, he had undoubtedly sacrificed some of humanity. The price of becoming the Sandu Sengshou.
Really, he knew he should not be in Yiling.
Jin Ling was too old for Jiang Cheng to follow him on his night hunts, and Wen Ning had proven himself somewhat trustworthy after ensuring Jin Ling returned to Lotus Pier unscathed on multiple occasions. After watching his sisters heart shatter upon the death of her husband, only to hold her in her arms as she drew her last breath, then have to listen Lan Wangji’s cries as his brother threw himself off that cliff edge in Nightless City, Jiang Cheng would say his paranoia was justified.
Jin Ling was his only family left aside from the complicated relationship he now had with Wei Wuxian, denying himself the chance to grieve the man who was once his brother and the woman he once loved as a boy, who sacrificed herself in his name.
Sometimes he thought he saw her, her wide, brown doe eyes under the hood of a travellers cloak, but when he looked back, she would be gone, and his heart would ache anew behind the comb he still kept in his robes all these years. In his thought, his shoulder bumped with someone smaller than him, pushing a soft grunt from him.
“Forgive me, sir. I was not watching where I was going.” The small woman said softly, steadying herself on his arm.
That voice !-
“Are you alright?” He asked gruffly, reaching to help her, only for her to pull away from him pointedly.
“I don’t need your pity, sir.” she said sharply, keeping her head bowed.
It couldn’t be...
He felt stupid to hope, the longing such an alien feeling after so long of denying himself it. Without thinking, he reached for her hood, only for a smaller, slender hand to clamp his wrist in a bruising grip. He grit his teeth and winced. It was too late though, he had nudged the hood just enough that it fell back onto her shoulders, and sure enough, those wide reddish brown eyes were glaring up at him.
“Wen-Guniang...” He said dumbly, eyes wide in shock. “You’re... You’re alive...”
She ripped her hand away from him, shoving him back and pulled her hood back up, pushing through the sea of people and through the main street. He was losing her.
No!
He grit his teeth and gripped Sandu tightly, weaving through the crowd, eyes trained on the smaller, black cloaked hooded figure. He couldn’t lose her, not again.
“HEY!” he shouted, mumbling an awkward apology to the old man he almost ran into. “Hey! Stop running! Come back!”
He followed her into the thick, dead forests that lead toward the Burial Mounds, nearly tripping up over the gnarled, exposed roots as she weaved expertly around them.
“WEN-GUNIANG!” he shouted after her.
He was too old to run after women like this. He should have given up when he’d been blacklisted. He stopped against a tree trunk to catch his breath, wincing in pain. The wounds from Guanyin Temple had never quite healed right, both physically and mentally. He cursed as he tasted the all too familiar tang of blood on his lips.
What was it with the Burial Mounds and making him cough up blood? Every time he came here he always wound up coughing it up in some way or another. He sighed tiredly, catching his breath for a minute before marching on. She can’t have gone much further.
“You’re staggering.” she said steadily, appearing from nowhere and pressing her hand to his abdomen.
“Gah! Gods, woman! You run away from me and then appear out of fucking nowhere?” He jerked back, feeling mildly scandalised to say the least.
“Shut up, there’s blood on your lips. What did you do now?”
“What did I do?! What did you do?! You’ve been dead for 20 years! What is it with Wei Wuxian and his friends and not staying dead?!”
“Believe me, you wouldn’t want to know. Open your robes so I can see the damage.” she deadpanned.
“The fuck?! I’m fine! Don’t try and medically violate me again! I know about my golden core!”
“Yes, A-Ning mentioned that.” She rolled her eyes. “Stop screeching and let me see, I’m not going to sedate you unless I need to.”
“That’s fucking reassuring!”
She shoved his back against the three trunk, gripping the front of his robes and forcing them open, exposing his chest and abdomen. He made a startled sound, feeling his face and neck burn as she studies the stitches and scars on his chest and abdomen, pressing her hand against a particularly fresh wound on his hip.
“A-Ning mentioned the little bastard injured you... Should have healed by now if you rested enough. Knowing you though...”
“The fuck was that supposed to mean?!”
Unbeknown to the pair, the comb that was usually in Jiang Cheng’s pocket had fallen to the ground, lying by their feet as the snapped at each other, Jiang Cheng failing miserably to conceal his mortification that the object of his adolescent affections had shoved him against a tree trunk in a desolate burial mound and began to - medically, Jiang Cheng reminded himself, medically - feel up his bare torso after pulling his damn robes open.
“You and your stupid brother are too thick headed to rest properly after injury or surgery. The idiot got up and started walking around again after I had pulled his golden core out and stitched him up, and he’d been awake the entire time. Yunmeng men, I swear. There is something seriously wrong with your brains.” She huffed, pressing diligent fingers against his abdomen, checking his core. “You need to be careful, if you continue as you are, carrying as much resentment as you, you risk deviation.”
“I... I know...” He mumbled, ashamed. It was difficult to let go and forgive after all these years aching alone. Still so many unanswered questions, new grudges, fresh wounds.
“Jiujiu?”
Jiang Cheng startled and pushed Wen Qing away, pulling his robes shut.
“What the hell are you doing here? It’s too dangerous for you to be here.” He questioned his nephew.
“I’m not a child! You would have died in the second siege if it weren’t for us!” Jin Ling snapped back. Jiang Cheng felt his migraine come back. “What are you doing here anyway? Were you following me again?”
“No!”
“Then why are you in Yiling?”
“Why are you in Yiling?!”
“Answer the question!”
“Don’t talk back to me!”
“Or what?”
“I’ll break your legs!”
“Pah! I’m not scared of you, you’d never actually hurt me!”
“Will everyone just stop shouting? Please?” Pleaded Lan Sizhui, stepping into the forest with Wen Ning, Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen in tow. “We were in the area and I just wanted to visit my cousins and pick up some medicine from Auntie Qing, okay? Ba got sick again, his core still isn’t strong enough.”
“Hold on... Jin Ling. You knew Wen-guniang was still alive?” Jiang Cheng asked, brow furrowing.
“Uh, yeah. We all do.” He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes, hugging Suihua against his chest. Jiang Cheng felt his heart twinge at how similar he looked to his father.
“All of you?”
“Yeah. Jin Ling was getting so desperate on his wife search for you he insisted to tag along to beg Wen-guniang to be your wife.” Lan Jingyi snorted, earning an elbow in the ribs from Ouyang Zizhen.
“Jin Rulan.”
“Uh oh, he’s using the courtesy name.” Lan Jingyi commented.
“What the hell is he talking about.”
“Nothing!”
“He’s a Lan, Lan’s don’t lie. Tell me. Now.”
“Do you seriously think he abides by their 50,000 rules?”
“4136 actually.” Lan Sizhui added.
“There’s more?” Wen Qing asked.
“Shufu keeps making rules to stay away from Ba.”
“Rules I would happily follow if Lan Qiren didn’t curse my name every time he needs me to heal one of his disciples.”
“Lan Qiren knows?!”

Winter Solstice Gift for sweetlittlevampire
Happy exchange to @sweetlittlevampire! You have no idea how much pressure I felt when I realized I was tasked with putting together your gift - your art is always so beautiful and detailed! I hope this checks the boxes for you: I aimed at driving home 'non-sexual intimacy' and 'found family', with lots of heavy fluff tones. Enjoy!
A quick note: because I have next to no familiarity with Chinese culture, either modern or ancient, I have set this story in modern North America. This means the wedding planning and cultural references adhere to North American styles.

The Award for Best Man
It’s an unusual time of day to be this exhausted, even by Lan Wangji’s supposedly early sleep schedule. The sun hasn’t finished climbing the sky yet and Lan Wangji can’t think of a single thing he’d rather be doing with a rare day off than this:
He and Wei Ying are together, lumped in the vertex of their L-shaped couch which sits directly in the morning sun. They have the apartment to themselves today, until this evening, when A-Yuan and Wen-popo will return their rabbits from babysitting. Wei Ying was still convinced that Bichen and Suibian would have been absolutely fine with them gone all yesterday to tour wedding venues; Lan Wangji had insisted they not be lonely.
Now he wonders if he subconsciously had the foresight to rid himself of anything that could have distracted him from an exhausted Wei Ying. He becomes so sweet and pliable when he’s tired, needy only for Lan Wangji’s affection and attention. It’s one of the only times Wei Ying lies still.
Usually.
Out of nowhere, Wei Ying springs out of his lap to sit upright on the couch. He must not be as tired as Lan Wangji thought.
“I just realized –” he says, turning back to Lan Wangji with a striking look of alarm on his face. “I can’t ask you to be my best man. Lan Zhan! You’ve ruined my wedding plans!”
Lan Wangji blinks, a little surprised. ‘Ruined’ seems a touch dramatic – if anything, he thinks recasting his role as ‘bridegroom’ is an upgrade over ‘best man’.
But because he’s tired too, his only response is: “Me?”
“Yes, you! Silly. What did you think I was gonna do? Get married at an altar where you weren’t there beside me and, wow, oh my god, that seems too revealing now that I say it out loud.”
Lan Wangji’s heart glows and he tucks a loose hair from Wei Ying’s face. The gesture makes them both smile. “I pictured you, too.”
“Aawww!! You did??” Wei Ying’s cheeks are flushing and his eyes are tearing up, but Lan Wangji is 85% sure it’s for dramatic effect. “Wait, like, always or...?”
Lan Wangji boops his nose, a private joke between them for every time he deems Wei Ying to be ‘nosy’. He knows it used to be a gesture exclusive to Jiang Yanli, his future sister, and every time Wei Ying lets him get away with it, bubbles simmer in his chest.
“Since Gusu,” he admits.
“Gusu Elementary?! Lan Zhan, you flirt! We were twelve! I waited until at least Qishan High to fall madly in love with you.” Assured, as he always is after successfully fishing for flattery, Wei Ying starts settling back into his sprawl inside Lan Wangji’s arms. “Ugh, remember Wen Chao, the principal’s kid? He’s a dad now. Facebook told me earlier.”
He isn’t pleased to have the memory of such a vile personality sour their cuddle time. He shifts, gathers Wei Ying closer, and switches the topic. “What about Jiang Wanyin?”
Wei Ying startles up again, though not all the way out of his arms, eyes wide with anxiety. “What about Jiang Cheng. Lan Zhan. Do you know something I don’t? When did Jiang Cheng get a kid – where did Jiang Cheng get a kid?! I KNOW Wen Qing has an IUD!”
Ah. He sees the problem now. “For your best man,” he explains, coaxing his fiancé back down. It marvels him how much one can struggle to relax.
“Oh, thank god,” Wei Ying says, slumping back into the pillow that is his betrothed before smacking a sweatered pec. “You worried me! We’ve both seen how A-Cheng is with Jin Ling, I shudder to think how he’ll be with his own.” He really does shudder, from his head down the base of his spine. Then he fidgets, rolling up his hands in the folds of Lan Wangji’s minty blue sweater. “But yeah, I suppose he’ll do for a best man. I’ll never hear the end of it if I ask Wen Ning over him.”
He sends a grin up at Lan Wangji, happily sharing the mental image of Jiang Cheng blowing a fuse. It’s a thought that never fails to tickle him.
“What about you?” Wei Ying asks. “I assume you’ll ask your brother but isn’t he still in the arctic?”
He was. Three weeks ago, a Waterborne Abyss had somehow broken loose from the ocean floor and wound up on the surface of the Pacific Ocean. When Xichen had first gone to cleanse it, it escaped the pre-set array and fled. Xichen had been tasked to pursue and had chased the demon around the north pole for nearly eight days now with scarcely a word of update.
Lan Wangji doesn’t like worrying about his brother. Luckily, it’s an even rarer occurrence than a truly exhausted Wei Ying.
Still...
“Mm...”
Wei Ying cuddles closer. “Ahhh, don’t worry too much, Lan Zhan, he’ll be back before you know it. He certainly won’t let some puny abyssal keep him from his didi’s wedding! I can’t wait to see him cry actual tears, I’m going to bribe Mianmian to take so many pictures.”
Lan Wangji flushes a little. He loves his brother and he knows Xichen loves him, but they never make a show of it in public. He suspects Wei Ying is correct in thinking their wedding will be an exception. Xichen has requested time to make a toast, after all.
“Hey, not to jinx it or anything, but who would you have as a best man if Lan Xichen couldn’t be? Not for a sad reason! Like, uhhh, say his wedding was on the same day, at the same time as ours. Yeah, that works.”
Lan Wangji raises an eyebrow. “Who is he marrying?”
Wei Ying’s smile goes crooked to match his brow, bemused as he is every time Lan Wangji indulges in these kinds of playful hypotheticals. “Does it matter?”
“Indubitably.”
Wei Ying laughs so hard he snorts. He is so exquisitely beautiful. “Well, if my future husband insists, I’ll paint you the whole picture. Um. Let’s say he marries... Jin Guangyao.”
Lan Wangji hums, a little put-off by the idea. It’s nothing against Jin Guangyao as a person, but he’s always been singularly difficult for Lan Wangji to read. All his favourite people – Xichen, Mingjue, Jiang Yanli, and of course Wei Ying – don’t make their thoughts or feelings hidden the way Jin Guangyao does. It leaves Lan Wangji with a very unstable opinion of the man – more than once he has badly misread a situation and felt insecure about the cues he must have missed.
Not to mention the history the man has with Wei Ying. They never talk about it, and Lan Wangji has never pried, but he knows the two were close friends as children before something fell apart between them. Wei Ying still sends a birthday wish to Jin Guangyao every year, in part because he always receives a card on his own. The card always includes a sheet of red stickers – anything red: anatomic hearts, parrots, chilli peppers, firetrucks, Santa hats, and ladybugs. Lan Wangji has never asked why he sends them or what Wei Ying does with them. It’s enough of an intrusion to watch that wistful smile play out.
“Mingjue,” he answers, refocusing on their game. “To spare the heartache.”
Wei Ying nods appreciatively at his wisdom. “Yes, yes, I agree. He’d cry, get sappy drunk, and trash the cake just to be a torturous mess at a Xiyao wedding, wouldn’t he? Best have him at ours, where he’ll cry, get sappy drunk, and sing all the worst love songs at karaoke with Nie Huaisang.”
“‘Come What May’,” Lan Wangji suggests, to Wei Ying’s delight.
“Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’!”
“‘Your Song’.”
Wei Ying’s smile turns sweet. He nuzzles into Lan Wangji’s chest and mutters quietly, “I already have one of those.”
They fall into peaceful near-quiet for a minute, Wei Ying softly humming out the score Lan Wangji composed for him years ago when it was the only way he knew to publicly dedicate his heart. During the last measure, Wei Ying’s stomach growls and he loses himself giggling. Lan Wangji smiles, rubs his stomach for him and lightly shushes it, which makes Wei Ying laugh harder.
“Alright, alright,” he says, whipping out his phone from between the seat cushions. “Time for lunch! Sushi okay with you?”
Lan Wangji nods, sneaks in a quick peck to his forehead, and says, “Whatever you want.”
“Sweet-talker,” he chides, but a flash of teeth betrays his happiness. “What rolls do you want?”
He can’t help himself. “Volcano roll, seared salmon roll, and spicy tuna bowl, extra wasabi and spicy mayo.”
Wei Ying gives him the sweetest side-eye and Lan Wangji swears the next words past his lips will be ‘I love you’: “Then I’m ordering yam rolls, cucumber rolls, low sodium miso soup, and tamago nigiri with no wasabi whatsoever.”
He knew it.
He pulls his fiancé up into a kiss, chasing down that ‘I love you’ with his tongue, certain it must taste as good as it had sounded, maybe even better than it feels, right now, against his lips and zinging down his body like welding sparks.
Wei Ying looks absolutely dazed when he releases him. “Happy with that?” Wei Ying asks, referring to the rolls.
“Besotted,” Lan Wangji confesses, absolutely lost in this man.
“Damn right,” Wei Ying whispers, voice breathy with reciprocation. It’s another fifteen minutes of playing kiss tag before their stomachs overrule them and get their lunch order placed.
With nothing to do but wait the thirty-five minutes it will take for their delivery to be made, Wei Ying brings them back to their earlier game, before the kissing.
“So what if Lan Xichen was marrying Nie Mingjue? Who would be your best man, then?”
It’s a slightly harder question than the last. Since he can remember, Nie Mingjue has been a brother by proxy, which means Lan Wangji must consider best men that aren’t brothers. Surprisingly, a person comes to mind rather quickly.
“Jin Zixuan.”
Wei Ying may have fallen to the floor if Lan Wangji’s arms weren’t such a secure tether to the couch. “WHAT?! WHY? Don’t tell me you’ve become friends with that Peacock behind my back! Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan, how could you betray me like this!?”
Lan Wangji frowns. “We were already friends.”
Wei Ying scoffs, “You were not.”
“We had coffee last week.”
“YOU HAD COFFEE?!” Distressed, Wei Ying drops his head into Lan Wangji’s sweater, whining about the slew of injustice. “Unacceptable... already friends... didn’t even rub off on the peacock at all, stupid... without telling me , Lan Zhan... such betrayal, much scandal, wow...”
Despite the energetic upset, Lan Wangji feels a yawn against his chest. Wei Ying’s exhaustion is finally catching up to him. “There, there,” he comforts, patting his head.
“Mmmm...” mutters the mess of hair. “Feels good, keep doing that. It eases my betrayed and deceived heart.”
Wei Ying’s requests are never difficult to fulfill – this one, especially so. Lan Wangji lets his posture relax further, content to sit in the sleepy energy of Sunday. Wei Ying keeps purring against him, breaths slowing and lengthening. They’ll both sleep through the food delivery at this rate.
Lan Wangji adds a light scratch to his pets and says, “Take a nap, Wei Ying. I’ll wait for lunch.”
Wei Ying hums in disagreement. “You’ll get bored, Lan Zhan. Here...” He rouses himself enough to stretch for the coffee table and grabs Lan Wangji’s reading glasses and latest novel. “Read. I can prop it up for you, like an actual supportive fiancé.”
Lan Wangji chuckles under his breath as he unfolds his glasses. “You are undoubtedly the best fiancé.”
Wei Ying bats blindly at the hand that pets him. “Shush, you! I’m sleeping now.”
Later, when their stomachs are stuffed full of too much rice, Lan Wangji thinks he’ll request they return to the couch. This is a day full of rarities and he’s determined to savour every minute of this sleeply, perfect man that it will gift him.

Bargaining with a Lan Bunny
Prompt: ...a kiss of suggestion | Prompt List Here & Open  Writer’s Notes: This lovely JinYi moment is set in my au, You’re My Muse ♥
///
Lan Jingyi  woke up from his nap on their plush couch to the smell of barbecue and his boyfriend’s laughter from the kitchen. He kept his eyes shut as he stretched out not too much unlike his beloved Snowdrop...ahem...he meant Buttons. And didn’t that just make him laugh.  His boyfriend’s nickname he’d tagged the fluff ball of cat was sticking in his mind now. Since he was thinking about her, Lan Jingyi looked around the room to find her sunbathing on top of a sleeping Fairy in front of the balcony doors.
“Don’t worry I will ask him, asshole.” Jin Ling’s timbered voice carries from the kitchen to the living room catching his attention. He didn’t need to check Jin Ling’s phone that was laying on the coffee table to know that it was Zizhen he was speaking too. Despite his harsh way of speech, Jin Ling doesn’t speak to his adoptive cousin like that.
Oh? Lan Jingyi thought, wondering what Jin Ling was going to ask him. A fond smile on his face as he twisted on the couch to peek over the arm into the kitchen. He spotted Jin Ling standing on the other side of the counter. A brown bag from their favorite barbecue place set aside as he put the take out on plates for them. His long blackish brown hair off to the side in a loose braid with an airpod stuck in his left ear. He’s still dressed in the grey tank that he’d put on after the shower this morning allowing him to parts of Jin Ling’s tattoo of zidian peeking out.
“How about the whole week?” Jin Ling asks then laughs, “Well he isn’t going to do that and you know it. Even going for a week would be pushing it.”
Lan Jingyi thinks for a moment then realizes that they are talking about the two weeks that he has off before he and Lan Sizhui have to go with his older cousin for the fan meeting of the current drama that Lan Wangji is working on. His brow furrowed a bit at the thought of what their boyfriend’s could be hatching up.
“Oh, my bunny is awake now. Gotta go.” Jin Ling chuckled catching Lan Jingyi failing to be quick enough not to get caught watching him. “You want to eat in there or at the table?” He asks loudly from the kitchen island.
“Bunny wants to eat at the table.” Jingyi huffs with a blush. He’s still not used to the nickname. But at least he doesn’t get called Radish like Lan Sizhui.
“Well then go wash up and I’ll have it ready in the dining room.” Jin Ling laughs gesturing for him to go. Lan Jingyi rolls his eyes before forcing himself to get up.
“You are so lucky that this bunny likes Pardner’s more than you.” Lan Jingyi fussed as he walked to their half bath. He quickly washed his face and his hands before heading back out. Sure enough when he stepped out the table was ready for them. Jin Ling already seated drinking his soda.
“So, what did you want to talk to me about?” Lan Jingyi asked sitting down across from his boyfriend. His mouth widening and watering at the sight and smell of his honey barbecue wings. While cooing over his food, Lan Jingyi misses the tight lipped smile on Jin Ling’s face.
“Uh, so I know you’re going to be home for the next two weeks and we’d talked about doing something with A-Yuan and Zizhen.” Jin Ling answered after taking another drink of his soda.
“Yeah, we were going to go to the aquarium.” Lan Jingyi stated while eating one of his wings.
“About that, we can still do that and since we are so close to Yiling while we are at the aquarium. Zizhen, A-Yuan, and I wanted to go to the Burial Grounds Inn for a week.” Jin Ling replied, seeing his boyfriend’s eyes go wide as his hands stilled. But that was only for a moment before his hazel eyes narrowed at him, raising his fork at the other.
“Absolutely not.” He said sharply, “I am not spending my vacation being scared to death.”
Jin Ling huffs as Lan Jingyi started eating his white cheddar macaroni and cheese pointedly not looking at him. An expression of annoyance on his face. He smiled thinly getting up to go sit beside him. Lan Jingyi let out a put out sigh as Jin Ling leaned in to his jaw, nuzzling it softly as the other tried to continue eating.
“Stop.” Lan Jingyi complained rolling his shoulder to get Jin Ling to stop. Jin Ling chuckled softly, not moving away, instead moving closer. He wrapped his arm around the backside of Lan Jingyi’s chair while one hand moved to Lan Jingyi’s cotton pajama covered thigh.
“Please.” Jin Ling asked, tone low and soft as he pressed a soft kiss to Lan Jingyi’s bunched cheek from the mouth full of macaronis.
“I said stop.” Lan Jingyi said after swallowing, bringing his hand up to push him away. Only for Jin Ling to lean in placing a firmer, kiss to the corner of Lan Jingyi’s chin, in the curve of his dimple, while trapping Jin Ling’s hand between them.
“Please, it’ll be fun.”
“Fun? What’s fun about being scared to death for a week straight because you guys want to see some ghosts?” Lan Jingyi asked, feeling annoyed that they would even want to do that with their first vacation time of the year.  To calm him down, Jin Ling kissed his dimple again.
Lan Jingyi rolled his eyes trying not to smile at his efforts. They both knew that it was working on getting him to say yes. Jin Ling showering him with kisses was always a way to get Lan Jingyi to do what he wanted.
“Just for the weekend then? Friday, Saturday, and Sunday?” Jin Ling suggested, hand grabbing his shoulder keeping him from moving away. Lan Jingyi set his fork down while tilting his head. The hand on his thigh that’d been soothingly rubbing circles stopped, and he didn’t need to look at Jin Ling to know he was bright smiling.
“What do I get out of it if I give you two days?” Lan Jingyi asked, mentally cursing himself for being so susceptible to Jin Ling’s lips.
“I’ll reschedule my collab with Hardgrove and we can spend the whole following week at the villa.” Jin Ling offered in between peppering his cheek and jaw with soft but purposefully placed kisses. Lan Jingyi let out a shaky breath as a shiver of desire slid down his spine.
“Damn you.” Lan Jingyi replied without any anger in his voice. He turned his head so that he was looking at him. His gaze flickering down to Jin Ling’s smirking lips. When he looked up into those whiskey colored eyes all he saw was love and equal desire. Jin Ling closed the distance between them and kissed him softly. His hand on Lan Jingyi’s thigh lifted to cup his cheek as he deepened the kiss, making the other forget about ghosts and their lunch.

4. What fandom’s/ship’s fan fiction do you read the most?
Answered here
7. What’s the last thing you read that made you cry?
Okay I’ve discussed it with some of you before but I’m always so puzzled when I receive comments the likes of “I cried reading this” and “bawling my eyes out right now”. I don’t cry reading, being fanfictions or otherwise... I don’t cry much period? Except when I watch tear-jerker videos or when I listen to the news sometimes.
The last time I cried was probably when Dumbledore died in the Order of the Phoenix lol (spoilers). Oh! And when I read Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”. Fun fact I was on a plane with my sister and I freaked her out with all the tears haha, it’s really out of character for me.
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
Gave one for Naruto so here’s one about Sasuke - I love Good Kid Sasuke. Like really just a sweet boy who helps out his mom and gardens for his grandparents and feeds stray cats on his way to school. Like if he hadn’t been struck down by tragedy he would just be a great, upright kid with a strong sense of justice and lots of love for his family and friends.
20. Do you have a favorite fanfic or author? If so, tag them/post a link and share the love!
I never have the reflex of checking out an author’s work even when I enjoy a fic, tbh I don’t even read the author’s name most of the time... Or even the fic title... I skip straight to the summary heh. I consume a LOT of fanfic, mostly short things, and rarely bookmark anything, most of them don’t stay with me?
I feel bad lmao so here are the fics from my bookmarks that I reread regularly:
Enjolras/Grantaire, Reincarnation AU
Charles/Erik, about Charles’ relationship with sex
Malec, adoption and stuff
Some freaking Teen Wolf Isaa/Danny that is maybe the most read fic in my history for some reason
Luffy/Law where Luffy accidentally tried to use haki on Law
My fave Naruto series, the one where Orochimaru’s around and teaches Anko and takes Naruto in kinda
That hilarious thing where Shikamaru’s crushing on Naruto and Ino is Not Helpful
That Guardian Lawyer AU where I kinda don’t get what’s going on but I love it anyway
Jin Ling/Lan Sizhui with a terrible case of teenage awkwardness
Robin teaching Luffy how to read
Et aller, deux-trois en français parce que quand même
Cet fic Naruto qui m’obsédait tellement à une époque que je l’avais imprimé pour pouvoir la relire masse fois
Harry/Draco, POV outsider, kinda crack, beaucoup trop drole
Cet espèce de Naruto/Gaara High School AU mais pas vraiment, vu par un Kiba très confus
Thank you for asking my friend :) You can ask more

GETTING TO KNOW ME!
Tagged by @sweetlittlevampire ! Thanks :)
why did you choose your url?
Oh it’s a fairly long story if I tell it all but to cut it short it’s a development on a joke from a fandom subgroup that I spent most of my university years in on here. It used to be beanmoreau but given that the character it’s in reference to is french (and a good bean!) I decided I liked bienmoreau better :) It’s almost the only thing left on my blog thats immediately referential to that fandom now too..
any side-blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.
Yeaaaa loads lmao. The only one that is even vaguely active these days is only @loverslivingpoetry (quotes and pretty things) It’s also the oldest one I have. From back in the days when you either had an aesthetic or a fandom blog so I had both lmao.
how long have you been on tumblr?
Gods. Okay I know this.. December 2012? I think? That sounds abt right.
do you have a queue tag?
Nah. I have in the past for when I knew I would be away for a while at festivals and such but I’m way to inconsistent to bother these days
why did you start your blog in the first place?
My best friend at the time had one and said it was fun and that I should make one. Out of the 4 of us that made blogs that year I think I’m the only one still on here anymore..
why did you choose you icon/pfp?
.. it’s just a silly lil beeb Jin Ling I doodled but I think it’s cute so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
why did you choose you header?
Because that art is super specific to me so it never gets notes but I’m really please with how it turned out and I still love both the characters and the idea behind it so I like getting to see it regularly
what’s your post with the most notes?
????? Not even sure how to check that tbh! But there’s one that if photos from the Coming Out exhibition in Liverpool a couple years ago that i had to delete cause the notifications literally broke my app.
how many followers do you have?
2.5k+ but honestly I assume most are deactivated now since I’m definitely not in the fandom that most of them followed me for.
how many people do you follow?
672 I used to follow thousands. Then went though a time of limiting it to like 500. And now I just don’t really pay attention but also haven’t added many new people lately
have you ever made a shitpost?
Uuummm probably.. I think I have but I don’t remember enough to give examples
how often do you use tumblr each day?
🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ it depends massively on the day tbh. But I will normally check it at least twice. In the morning and the evening to catch up with friends. More when I’ve made a post myself
did you have a fight/argument with a blog once?
Yeaaa I was caught in some real bad fandom drama for the last fandom I was properly part of which it a big part of why I’m well away from it now.
how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this post’?
Low level irritation and a stubbornness around not reblogging it even if I would have without that comment. Mostly cause I don’t like to pass the comment on.
do you like tag games?
YEP! But sometimes I’m rubbish and slow to do them
do you like ask games?
YES! I used to reblog loads and have made a few of my own but I’m so not in any social fandom groups anymore so people don’t engage so much anymore.
which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
??? Idk there’s probably a few mdzs blogs that are *known* in the fandom and back in the days of my previous fandom I was pretty big in the fandom myself so a bunch of my mutuals were *famous* in the fandom but I don’t think I have any that are tumblr wide famous. Tho a few have posts that have seriously taken off.
do you have a crush on a mutual?
Nah. Love y’all for what you make and those I’m friends with as well mean a lot to me but I don’t really do crushes tbh.
And tagging @everythingthatmatters @rinielle @theheartofthekoko @faintlyglow @wesawbears (I know I already know some of you but sshh) only if you want to!!
