A magnet for adventure tourists and nature lovers, Ohiopyle State Park sprawls across twenty thousand square acres of steeply-sloped wild lands on the flanks of the Youghiogheny River Gorge in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail runs through the heart of the park, which also anchors a thriving whitewater rafting industry. I fortunately live within a short drive of the park, so a day hike is always in the cards. Especially on a beautiful Memorial Day holiday.
From top: black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis), an aggressive colonizer with delicious fruit coveted by humans and animals alike; longstyle sweetroot (Osmorhiza longistylis), also known as anise root, because its roots have a licorice-like flavor; Indian cucumber (Medeola virginiana), easily identified by its two tiers of whorled leaves and odd, pendulous flowers; and speckled wood lily (Clintonia umbellulata), also known as white Clintonia or black-bead lily, a close relative of yellow Clintonia (Clintonia borealis), which tends to occur at higher elevations in Central Appalachia.

Sunday, May 18th- Ohiopyle State Park
Evie adjusted the strap to her helmet as she turned to face Sidney. “Beso, I am not so sure about this,” she said shakily. She eyed the small rubber raft that they were set to take on a guided tour down the Youghiogheny river. She was thoroughly protected with her yellow helmet and life jacket. Sidney had assured that while her paddling would be appreciated- it was unnecessary.
“Where is your sense of adventure, Evie?” he laughed as he directed her to the middle of the raft. He then joined the guide in pushing the boat out into the current of the river and hopping into the front spot. Evie acclimated herself to the rocking of the boat. She positioned herself to one side of the boat while Sidney was on the other side. Sidney handed Evie her paddle with a jovial, “Are you ready?” She nodded her head and put on a brave smile. “Evie, it will be fine. Truly, you are going to love it,” he assured as he placed his hand behind her head and brought her to him for a quick kiss. The guide shouted instructions to get their paddling pace set and they were on their way down the river.
Sidney and the tour guide did the bulk of the paddling but Evie did her fair share. It was a short ride before they encountered their first set of rapids. Their guide shouted instructions and Evie laughed and giggled as the boat rocked and spun around. They were soaked with water when she turned to see the pure joy spread across Sidney’s face. An hour and a half of paddling and about ten sets of rapids later, they pulled over to make the climb to the waterfalls and natural slides. Evie let Sidney remove her helmet and life jacket. He checked her over quickly and gave a quick smile.
“Come on, Princess,” he joked as he squatted to allow her to jump onto his back, “My princess doesn’t hike to waterfalls- at least not after paddling like a pro for over an hour.” The guide walked in front of them, carrying the cooler containing their lunch. They arrived at the clearing nestled beside the large waterfall. “It’s beautiful, right?” he asked as the guide set up their lunch. Evie nodded and wrapped her arms around his waist. He rested his head on top of her head as they waited, “Evie, why are you being quiet?”
“You know why Beso- you know why,” she said quietly.
In a little under thirty six hours, Sidney would be boarding a flight to London Heathrow to meet his friend, Mike, to begin their extended European vacation. It would be just under three weeks until Sidney and Evie reunited in Frankfurt, Germany to begin their week-long tour of Bavaria and Switzerland. This day trip would be their last extended time together until then. Sidney squeezed her tight. Evie had been putting on a brave face when the subject came up in conversation, but he could tell that the anticipation of the separation was wearing on her. Not that he could blame her at all. If he was being honest, a sense of melancholy had begun to form deep in his soul. He tried to push the feeling down, but hearing the sadness in her voice made it impossible in the moment.
“Can we try to enjoy the day without thinking about it?”, he responded. The guide had completed the lunch set-up so they knelt down on the blanket. He watched as Evie crawled to the picnic basket and began making Sidney’s plate. She handed it to him with a soft smile before making her plate. She sat next to him in a cross legged position so that her knee was touching the outside of his knee.
She looked up at him and grinned, “Okay Beso, I am done being sad about it for today. I do reserve the right to be extremely sad about it tomorrow night when I am dropping you off at the airport though. Be prepared for tears and gnashing of teeth.” Sidney smiled and leaned over to kiss her neck. “Mmmmm, Beso- you know I like that,” she whispered.
“What else do you like, Evie?” he murmured against her skin.
“Beso, stop- I will do a lot of things for you, but I draw the line at fucking in the woods. I do have at least that much dignity,” she laughed.
Sidney stuck his bottom lip out in a playful pout, “So fucking against a tree is on the red list? I got it. The splinters would be awful.”
“I can’t believe that after tomorrow  it will be almost three whole weeks until we fuck again. I don’t know how I'm going to survive it. I believe I may be addicted to that dick and you are going to make me go cold turkey. That’s just mean, Beso. I mean, since we met, the longest we’ve gone without sex is two weeks, right?” she teased.
“Two weeks? When did we go two weeks without sex?”,he asked with a smile.
“You remember- it was almost two weeks from the first time we did it in the locker room and when you texted me,” she laughed, “You had me pining for you, even then.”
Sidney blinked and forced a smile. “Two weeks?” he thought to himself. He knew what she was referring to but was certain that she was under the impression that he had been celibate during that time, at least based on her comment. His mind raced. Should he tell her the truth and risk hurting her feelings? It was the last thing that he wanted to do on the eve of his departure. On the other hand, his gut told him that she would consider any lack of disclosure from this point on to be a lie of omission. He studied her face. She looked at him with such love and devotion. It made his heart ache a little. Legitimately, he had no reason to feel guilty about being  with someone else during that time period. They had not exchanged numbers. They had not made plans to see each other again. Still, a part of him felt that he had indeed “cheated” on her on some level.
Evie’s face scrunched slightly, “Do you not remember? Did you block it out of your memory bank?”
He smiled and placed his hand on her cheek, “Oh, I remember. It was the longest two weeks of my life.” She smiled and leaned into his caress. “Fuck,” he thought to himself, “I’ll tell her tonight. I will tell her after we…..She will be relaxed and take the news better,” he thought to himself. What difference would a few hours make after almost nine months? They continued their lunch without further discussion of the matter. After lunch, their guide led them to the natural water slides. They were in the process of shedding their clothes down to their bathing suits. Sidney looked up and saw Evie in her bikini and let out a soft whistle.
She looked at him, “What, Beso?”
“Looking mighty fine in that bikini, Evita,” he complimented.
“It’s just a bikini,” she blushed, “I mean you see me naked all-the-time.”
“Yes, but it is my first time to see you in a bikini,” he stood up and walked to her. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her shoulders. He added, “Just because I see you naked all-the-time doesn’t mean you don’t take my breath away all-the-time.You are the sexiest woman on the planet.” She smiled and leaned into him. “And you are all mine,” he boasted.
“Sid- Is that you?” a female voice called out.
Both Sidney and Evie sighed deeply and moved apart. Evie made eye contact with the source of the voice before Sidney did. A gorgeous blond about Evie’s height was waving furiously at Sidney. Evie touched his chest and pointed the woman out to him. His eyes widened and he forced a smile, “Hey Kristen.” Evie looked up at Sidney in surprise. She had anticipated the woman to be another random fan encounter. Clearly the woman knew him and he knew her.
The thin blonde crossed over to them. She was wearing an inappropriately small bikini. Kristen flashed a bright smile and leaned into hug Sidney. Sidney politely gave her a side hug. “Sid, where in the heck have you been?” she said excitedly, “I haven’t seen you since like, September?”
Evie looked from Kristen to Sidney and back again. Sidney looked uncomfortable and avoided eye contact with Evie. “Yeah, you know- I have been busy with the season,” he answered neutrally.
Again, Evie looked back and forth between two and then stared at Sidney. Mentally, her mind was racing. “September?” she thought to herself. She and Sidney had met the first week of September. When in September did this girl mean? What does “seen” mean?” She looked at Sidney one more time and the uncomfortable silence got the better of her. “Your name is Kristen? How do you and Sidney know each other?” she asked.
Kristen and Sidney exchanged a look. Sidney finally spoke, “Kristen and I used to hang out last season.”
Evie spoke quietly, “Hang iut? Do you mean like date?”
Kristen looked at Sidney for a clue on how to respond, “I wouldn’t call it dating. Would you, Sid?” Evie felt like she had been punched in the stomach. “Sid, you are being rude. You haven’t introduced me to your friend. I’m Kristen by the way,” she said in an attempt at a friendly tone. The snark was barely concealed. Sidney remained speechless.
“I’m Evie. I am his friend, I suppose,” Evie returned the snark.
“Evie? You are Evie?” Kristen laughed, “Wow, I never thought I would actually meet you.”
Evie’s eyes widened and sputtered, “You know about me?”
“Yes, your name came up the last time Sid and I were together,” she answered.
Evie stood silently and thought. Her name had come up the last they were together. She mentally pictured the gorgeous blond and Sidney kissing on a couch. Then her mind wandered to a far more scandalous image. How would her name come up? In what context would it come up?
Sidney seemed to wake up from whatever semi-conscious state he had withdrawn into. He had to get the situation under control and he needed to do it quickly. This encounter was going from bad to worse. He mentally berated himself, “You should have fucking told her when you had the chance. You fucking blew it.” He wrapped his arm around Evie’s waist and pulled her into him. “Kristen, this is my girlfriend- Evie,” he began to explain, “Evie, this is Kristen my friend I used to hang out with last season.”
“And September,” Kristen added.
“And September,” Sidney admitted, “The first part of September- that’s right. It was right before I started dating Evie. She and I had just met the last time I saw you.”
Kristen commented, “I tried to get in contact with you. Did you change your number?”
Sidney felt Evie trying to pull away from him. “Yeah, I changed it around that time. Anyway, it was ummm, good to see you but Evie and I are about to go to the water slides. Okay, bye!”
Kristen smirked and walked away. She knew that she was being brushed off. She turned to watch Evie racing up the path with Sidney on her trail. “So that’s the girl that caught Crosby?” she thought to herself, “At least I lost out to someone pretty.”
Evie stormed up the path as Sidney followed, “Evie- talk to me. Remember when we said communication was important.” Evie continued to walk and entered the pool of water at the top of the slide. She waded through the water as Sidney called to her, “Evie- wait. Let me go down the slide with you. Remember they said it can get rough at the bottom?”
She turned and looked at him, “Like you care. Why don’t you go spend some time with Kristen!” She sat down on the rock and pushed her body down the slide. Sidney ran through the water to get on the slide as well. He watched as Evie’s body bounced between the rock walls of  the slide like a ping-pong ball. She seemed to be picking up speed as she hit the first rock landing. She yelped in pain as her ankle got caught in a rock and twisted before it was jerked free by the force of the water. She tried to overcorrect and hit her forehead against a rock. Sidney screamed as he struggled to maintain eye contact on her while coming down the slide. At the bottom of the slide, Evie got caught in the rapids and struggled to stand up. She pushed down on the bad ankle and recoiled in pain. The water continued to rush over her and push her back down. She attempted to stand up again and again. With each effort, she would gasp as her head emerged before she pulled under again.
Evie began to panic when Sidney’s hands grabbed her biceps and pulled her out of the water. “I got you. I got you, Evie. You are going to be okay,” he yelled as he pulled her into his chest. “Hold on Evie,” he yelled as he carried her to the calmer part of the water. He held onto her at  the edge of the water. Sidney’s heart raced as she clung to him for dear life.
Slowly, the memory of Kristen re-entered Eve’s mind and she pushed away from him. “Let me go. Let me go. Put me down,” she panted, “Fucking let me go.” Sidney tightened his grip- partially in fear that if she pushed too hard she would end up falling against the jagged rocks and frustration that she was pulling away from him. “Sidney! I said let go,” she screamed as she fought against him, “RED, RED, RED- I fucking said RED” He gingerly set her down on the rocks next to the water. They stood dripping wet, silently staring at each other.
“I want to go home now. I am done, Beso,” she spit out.
“Let me help you back to the blanket. We need to get dressed before we get back on the raft,” he suggested.
“I can walk on my own. I don’t want you right now, Sidney,” she huffed as she took her first step. She winced in pain but continued to walk. Wordlessly Sidney walked beside her, ready to assist her if needed. Who was he kidding? He was ready to assist her if she allowed him. Each step became more painful for Evie. She tried unsuccessfully to hop but the terrain was too uneven. Finally she held out her hand and allowed him to support her as she hopped. Tears of frustration flowed down her face.
“Evie,” he pleaded, “Let me help you.”
She stopped and bent over and looked up at him. She wanted to walk on her own. She didn’t want to rely on him but the blanket was another fifty yards. Even if she could make it that far, after they dressed it would be at least a three quarter mile hike back to the raft. There was no way she could make it with her current pain level. Slowly she nodded her in affirmation and he scooped her up in his arms. She tried to make her body rigid and resist the temptation to relax into him. He stared at her face, “I am sorry, Evie. I fucked up and I am sorry.”
She made brief eye contact and then looked down, “I don’t want to talk about it, Beso. I just want to go home.” He nodded, thankful that she was still calling him Beso. That was a sign- a good one that he hoped. Sidney set her softly on the blanket. She watched him wiggle back into his shorts over his bathing suit and smiled to herself as he struggled to get them over his ample behind. After Sidney put his shirt and shoes back on, he knelt beside Evie and looked up at her face for permission to examine her ankle. He gently moved the ankle in different directions while he watched her face for her reactions. “Do you think it’s broken, Beso?” she asked quietly.
“I don’t think so, but we’ll get it checked out when we get back to Pittsburgh,” he replied.
She nodded her head solemnly as she placed her head through the neck of her shirt. Sidney tried to suppress a smile as she rolled on her back to get her shorts, her legs flying into the air as she lifted her bottom up to slide them up to her waist. She rolled onto her knees and attempted to stand up. She was able to push up on her good ankle. She looked at Sidney helplessly, again she resisted the idea of him carrying her along the path. Unfortunately she did not see an alternative. “Will you carry me?”, she said with a sigh.
“Always,” he answered quickly. He bent down and she jumped onto his back like a backpack. She wrapped her arms around his chest as he held up her legs with his forearms. She held her body stiffly upright as he carried her through the wooded path. Within minutes, she felt an ache in her back from the tension. Evie relaxed her body and leaned into Sidney. “Just a few more minutes, Evita,” he said. She nuzzled her face into his neck and inhaled deeply. His scent was familiar and she allowed it to comfort her. By the time they reached the raft for their return trip, her initial fiery hot anger had dissipated and been replaced with sadness and hurt. Mentally she pushed out the intrusive thoughts and adjusted her position in the raft. Sidney had insisted that she sit in the middle raft and allow the guide and him to do all of the paddling. The joy of the morning was a distant memory to both of them. By the time they arrived back at the starting point, changed into their dry clothes and got into the car, Sidney could abide the silence no longer.
“How long are you going to be mad at me?”,he asked quietly as he started the car, “When do you think that you can talk about it?” The thought of leaving for Europe with negative feelings between them had consumed his thoughts. She smiled grimly. Somehow the knowledge that he assumed that she would no longer be mad and would eventually forgive him felt like progress after their playoff experience.
“Can we talk when we get home to your house?”,she answered.
“And the first question,” he asked.
“Beso,” she turned to look at him, “I am not even sure if what I am feeling is anger. I am not sure of anything at all.” She saw the grimace and continued, “What I AM sure of is that I love you and that is just about the only thing I am sure of.”
“I love you, Evie. I love you so much,” he sighed. She unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Can you get my phone and dial Chris Stewart for me?” he asked.
“You want me to go through your phone?”,she asked quickly.
“I want you to make a call for me first, but then you can go through my phone if you want to. There isn’t anything on there that you can’t see,” he responded.
“Okay,” she picked his phone and dialed the number, “Isn’t that the head trainer?”
The phone rang and Chris Stewart, Pittsburgh Penguins head trainer answered, “Hey Sid- what’s up?”
“I’m sorry to bother you on a Sunday, but Evie has injured her ankle. Can you recommend a good place to get it checked out? I would prefer not to sit for hours in an emergency waiting room if possible,” Sidney politely spoke.
“Do you think it’s broken?”,Chris asked, “If you don’t think it’s broken, she can probably wait until tomorrow to be seen.”
“Normally, I would agree but I leave for London tomorrow night. I would prefer to get it checked out today to ease everyone’s minds,” Sidney pushed back. Evie listened intently and picked up on the non-so-subtle message that it was Sidney’s mind that needed to be eased. Chris picked up on it as well. He was inclined to keep his team captain happy, even if it was the offseason.
“I can be at the rink in thirty minutes and check her ankle. If there is an injury, I will get her into Dr. Vyas in the morning,” Chris suggested, “Will that ease everyone’s minds?”
Sidney smiled, “Thank you. We will be there in an hour and half. See you then.”
Evie hung up the call and placed the phone back into the holder. She shook her head and looked out the window, “You didn’t have to do that, you know?”
“I will always do what I need to do to take care of you-always,” he insisted, “Even if you don’t like me very much right now.” Evie started to argue but didn’t know what to say. Instead she put her feet up on his dashboard and leaned her seat back. “Go ahead and take a nap,” he said softly as he reached over to caress her arm and then thigh, “I will wake you when we get there.”
Evie roused as Sidney lifted her out of his car. "Beso," she whined, "You don't have to carry me." He smiled and shook his head. She smiled sheepishly as Sidney set her down on the examination tables. “I am sorry to disturb your Sunday, Mr. Stewart,” she said with an embarrassed tone, “It’s probably nothing.”
“Well, then that will be a good thing.” he said with a smile. He began examining her ankle, asking for a description of how it happened and what kind of pain/mobility issues she had felt. “Based on the lack of bruising and limited swelling, it’s a mild sprain, but I will x-ray to be sure,” he reassured them.
When Chris and Evie returned from the x-ray room, he gave Sidney a thumbs up. Sidney let out a breath that he hadn’t realized that he had been holding in. “Really? You sure?” Sidney asked for confirmation.
“Definitely a mild sprain with a stinger which contributed to the pain. Evie, remember to rest and elevate it as much as possible. Limit your walking for a couple of days. You should be good as new in less than a week,” he stated plainly. Sidney was overcome with relief and pulled the trainer into an awkward hug. “You okay there, Sid?” he questioned the sudden movement.
“Oh yeah,” Sidney said as he released him, “ I just appreciate the time.”
. Sidney turned, walked to her, lifted and spun her around in a circle. “Thank God,” he whispered, “Thank God you are not injured.” She searched his eyes and gave him a soft smile. “You are okay, Evie,” he smiled, “You are okay.”
“Yes, I am okay,” she raised her hand to his face and gently rubbed her thumb from his forehead, down and around his temple. She repeated the gesture with other hand. The gentle motion intended to push the stress down and out his mind. "Take me home," she said quickly, "I want to go home."
Sid cocked his head, "and where is home?"
"Your house," she replied.
"You sure?" he asked.
"Beso, it is a conversation, not a break-up," she said with authority.
Evie looked Sidney in the eye. For a moment she forgot the sadness and hurt of the afternoon and studied his face. The genuine relief that was washed over him was visible to the naked eye. At least to her naked eye that had watched him bottle his stress inside himself. The tension had been palpable and she watched it dissipate. It was like the weight of the world slowly lifted off his back. She pondered the source, as if it should be some mystery to her. Sure as she knew the sun would rise tomorrow she knew that her safety and well-being was his paramount concern. The idea of her being injured was worse than being injured himself.
"Beso, let's go talk," she smiled, "on second thought, let's eat first then we can talk."
After a silent dinner, he carried her to the couch. She sat with her back to the end of the sofa with her legs extended out so that her feet rested in Sidney's lap. She held a glass of wine in her lap. Sidney mindlessly massaged her feet. Evie stared at him and contemplated her words before she spoke softly.
"I have a statement and then I have questions," she said finally.
"It's not that you have or had a past that hurts me. It is that you had the perfect opportunity to tell me and you chose to stay quiet. Then Karma decided to come bite you in the ass and in the process took a chunk out of me. You know that, right?"
Sidney looked down, "I do know that. I would give anything to change it. I chose the path of least resistance instead of having a simple conversation. Would you believe that I intended to tell you tonight?"
Evie laughed, "What? Were you going to make me cum a few times and then slip it in before I fell asleep?"
Sidney’s eyes flashed up and he blushed.
"That was your plan? That was seriously your plan?" she gasped.
"Hey, you graduated from Temple. I attended Pittsburgh Penguins University. I never claimed to be as smart as you," he attempted the joke. Evie did not laugh.
"I thought all day about what exactly I am feeling about this revelation. Well, I have been thinking about it since the white hot rage dissipated. You can thank my clumsiness for that," she began.
"I will not be thankful for you getting hurt. I would have rather have endured being the target of your anger than watch you be hurt," he interjected.
She paused and looked into his eyes, "You are right. I misspoke and I apologize." She took a deep breath and looked at her hands. Her fingers were jittery and shook slightly. "I just feel like a fool. I feel so foolish for making the assumption. I mean you are a man so it is not unreasonable that you were already hooking up with Kristen. You probably had a stable of available women who were very willing to take care of your sexual needs. There is nothing particularly special about me or at least now I realize that."
Tears flowed from her eyes and Sidney grabbed her hand and squeezed it, "That's not true. That's not true at all."
"Oh I know that you love me NOW but it was different then. I can't even fault you for it being different," Evie stared at him, "You tell me Sidney. You tell me that when you finally texted me, that your intentions were anything but to get another kinkyish fuck." He didn't speak. "That's what I thought. I happily obliged you too. I tried to play it cool when you texted. I tried to pretend that you hadn't consumed my every thought since that first night. I couldn't get away from you during those two weeks- billboards, commercials.... freaking Crosby jerseys everywhere. Turns out it was nothing but a booty call after all. I don't even know why it hurts but it does."
"Do you think it was easy for me? Every time I went to work the memory of you was there. I would have to WILL myself not to get hard imagining you there. Believe me those two weeks were miserable for me too"
Evie looked up at him, "So miserable yet you hooked up with Kristen, right?"
"You are not letting me explain," he countered.
"So spill it," she sighed.
"I was an idiot and didn't get your phone number before you left. I regretted it as soon as I saw you walk out the door. I tried to convince myself that it was a one time thing that didn't mean anything. I honestly believed that you didn't want anything more. The next day I came into workout and practice and all I could picture was you. It wasn't just the memory of the sex, but your laugh and your spirit," he rambled. Evie smiled softly.
He continued, "I managed to make it through the day, but I couldn't stop thinking about you. It was driving me crazy. I thought maybe if I replaced the memory with another one it would make it better so I got together with Kate."
"Kate?" Evie interrupted, "I thought her name was Kristen."
Sidney paused and looked at her, "You met Kristen today. There was also Kate."
"There was more than one Sidney?" she cried.
"Do you want the truth or not?" he asked.
"So Kate was a regular thing or one time?" she asked quietly.
"One time thing," he answered just as quietly.
"Go on," she steeled herself for what came next.
"We met at a bar. I went back to her place," he began
"You went to her place? Not your house?" Evie asked before she realized she interrupted him, "Sorry."
"Ask any question you want, Evie," he assured her, "Her place- you are the first woman I brought to my house"
"Oh," she uttered, "I didn't know that."
"We started but I wasn't into it. All I could think about your mouth and how I wanted it on me and not hers," he blushed, "I barely managed to finish. I am sure she is telling quite the story about my pathetic performance. I left and have never seen or spoken to her since then."
Evie breathed a sigh of relief.
"Fast forward a week, Kristen texts me and asks me to get together. We never dated, Evie. It was purely a hook up thing which I am not sure is much better for you. Anyway, I go over and things are progressing but the same thing happens. I could only think of you. I got out of there as soon as I could. I got home and couldn't sleep. About three AM, I sent a text to Guentzy to get your number from Natalie," he explained, "The next morning I got a new phone and new number. I didn't speak to Kristen again until today. It took me a couple of days to work up the courage to text you. I wanted to wait until the weekend because of your work." Sidney paused and squeezed her hands.
"I may have thought it was a booty call but I wanted and hoped for more. I was willing to settle for whatever you would give me. I just wanted to be near you again. I had to see you again. I was going crazy," he leaned forward and brushed her hair back from her eyes.
"I have questions," she replied meekly. He nodded his head. "You changed your number before you reached out to me. Why? What were you going to do if I said no?"
"I changed it because I wanted a new start and a clean slate. I didn't want to hear from any of the others. I only wanted you," his eyes scanned her face, "I didn't have a plan if you said no. I just prayed that you would say yes and you did."
"How did Kristen know about me?" She asked.
Sidney blushed and looked down, "I, uhhhhh, may have said your name while I was fucking her."
"What?" Evie gasped, "You did what?"
"I said the wrong name while I was…." he tried to answer before Evie kissed him hard on the mouth. Sidney moaned into her mouth and pulled her onto his lap.
"Because you were thinking about me?" She slid her tongue into his mouth and their kiss ignited. His hands slid under her shirt and slid it up over her head, "Tell me…."
"I was thinking about you. I wanted you," he pushed her bra down and began licking and sucking her nipple, "I have wanted you since the moment I saw you at the liquor table. I had to have you then and I have to have you now."
Evie suddenly laughed and Sidney’s head popped up, "No wonder she was so bitchy to me today. She knows that I stole your dick from her."
"What?" He asked in confusion.
"She was getting this dick on the regular, right?" She palmed his crotch slowly, "Then I came along and took it from her. She hates me. Fuck, I would hate me too."
Sidney shook his head and stood up. Evie wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her upstairs. Evie whispered into his ear, "I am a dick thief. I took it and it's all mine."
"Yes, all yours and only yours," he moaned as they kissed.
"For how long?" She asked.
"Forever," he answered as he laid on the bed and climbed on top of her.
"I got that good of a coochie, huh?" She asked as she slid her hand into his shorts.
"You have that good everything, Evita," he groaned.
"I love you Beso," she cried out as his hands explored her body.
"I love you more," he answered.
THE NEXT MORNING
Sidney woke up and rolled his body toward Evie. With one arm, he pulled her into him. He listened to her soft snores and tried to memorize their rhythm. He would miss this time with her the most he thought to himself. The mornings after a long night of lovemaking were filled with a tenderness and love that he never experienced before Evie. She mewed softly and wiggled back into him. "Evita, do you want to sleep later or make love again before you have to get ready for work?" he questioned quietly. Her reach for his hand to place it between her legs gave him the answer that he needed.
Later, Sidney insisted on driving her into work and escorted to her office. Evie rolled her eyes, but secretly loved the added attention. Lunch consisted of Sidney hand delivered favorites and flowers. "Beso," she started to protest. He raised an eyebrow. "Thank you for spoiling me on your last day in town," she corrected herself. He showered with kisses before heading back to finish packing for his trip.
When he picked her up after work, he noticed her red eyes that were slightly puffy- a clear indication that she had been crying. “How was the rest of your day at work?” he asked as she settled into the front seat and he started to drive to the airport.
“Do you really want to hear about my day?” she asked.
“Of course- more importantly I want to know why you were crying, Evie,” he answered.
She stared at him and didn’t speak. A flash of annoyance raced through her mind. “How could he not know?” she questioned herself.
“So nothing new made you cry?” he answered in understanding.
“No, nothing new made me cry. I actually had very unproductive day in terms of work,” she laughed,
“Unproductive day? Why? I mean…. Shit, Evie,” he stammered.
“I did the bare minimum at work and then spent the day scheduling something to do every day until I fly to Germany. I am booked solid with hair/spa appointments, dinners with Adriana, Teddy is even going to fly in from Toronto for one weekend,” she answered.
“Teddy Baxter? Why is she in Toronto?” he asked, “Oh wait, Big Rig is from Toronto- never mind. That’s great that you made plans. You’ll be so busy that you won’t even miss me.” She gave him a side eye. “Evie, you are killing me,” he protested, “I am trying to make jokes. If I don’t laugh, I may not be able to get on the damn plane.”
Evie gasped, “I’m sorry, Beso. I didn’t realize that you were struggling too.”
It was Sidney’s turn to give her the side eye. They spent the rest of the short ride in silence. Each of them were caught up in their own thoughts. “Will you walk me inside, Evita?” he asked. She nodded and smiled. As they stood at the check-in counter, Evie slid an envelope into his suitcase before he handed it to the ticket agent. “You didn’t put any contraband in there, did you?” he laughed.
She stood up and kissed him, “Some surprises for you when you get over there.”
“Best girlfriend ever,” he teased. She smiled as he took her hand, adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and walked to the priority access security line. She hesitated a moment as he turned to face her, “This is it, Evie.” She looked around at the evening airport crowd. There were a few stares as people walked by and recognized Sidney. He pulled his cap down lower, “Sorry, Evie.” She rested her forehead against his chest and sighed. “It’ll be okay, Evie,” he attempted to cheer her up and to try to convince himself. His heart ached and a lump formed in his throat. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled into a protective hug. She wrapped her arms around his waist and held onto his body.
Suddenly she pushed back and looked into his eyes, “Okay, we have to stop this.”
“Stop what?” he asked in a panic.
“We have to stop acting like this is the worst thing in the world to ever happen to us. We are making ourselves miserable. Think about it, Beso. You are going off to a great adventure with your good friend, Mike. If this was a year ago, you would be so excited to go on this trip,” she explained.
He looked at her in surprise, “You are right, but that was last year and things changed. Everything changed when I met you.”
“I know, Beso. Everything changed when I met you too,” she agreed, “but we can look at this as a curse or a blessing. If we think of it as a curse, then we will be miserable for three weeks. The last thing I want is for you to be sad.” She looked into his eyes and kissed him, “I want you to have the best time possible. Have big adventures and see everything. I want you to take a ton of pictures and text me all the time with what you are doing.”
“It will be hard,” he interjected.
“But we can be brave and strong, right?” she prodded, “Think of it like this. In a little over a year, we are going to get married. Think of it as a scouting trip for our honeymoon. Find all places that you want to take me next year when I am your WIFE.”
He smiled, “My wife- I can’t wait.”
She hopped into his arms, “So no more sadness, Mr. Crosby. You have a job to do- got it?”
“Princess, quit being so bossy,” he teased.
“You can punish me in Germany,” she teased back.
“Ohhhhh, I like the sound of that,” he smiled.
“Now go- Operation Honeymoon hunt is officially starting,” she joked.
He set her down with a last hug and started to walk away. He got about ten steps before turned and ran back. He scooped her into his arms, “I love you. I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” she kissed him hard, “Now go and have fun!”

what's something you're the most proud of in your life? something you've done or something about yourself that just makes you feel proud
do you have any pets?
favorite place to be
1. Ok it’s hard to think of things that aren’t necessarily work related but I AM proud of my work! I think my most proud moment was getting to present a workshop about a longtime project at a conference and have it be embraced by industry colleagues and they still talk to me about it years later and find it useful. First time realizing I could make a difference.
2. No pets atm but I want a dog as soon as my lifestyle will allow it !!
3. In the woods, on a mountain. If that’s too vague I’ll go with Ohiopyle State Park where I used to do so much and I miss having access to it with every fiber of my being

Although located adjacent to Ohiopyle State Park, Bear Run Nature Reserve gets significantly less tourist foot traffic than its noisy, crowded neighbor, probably due to a lack of beer and funnel cakes within walking distance.  It’s a gorgeous place for a hike at any time of the year, but especially in the spring and fall. The reserve is owned and operated by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and includes Frank Lloyd Wright’s triumph of form over function, Fallingwater.  Someday, when I can better organize and address the many priorities of my life, I’ll schedule a tour of the revolutionary edifice that chased away Edward Kaufman and his family. Today, however, I settled for a lovely spring hike.
From top: golden ragwort (Packera aurea), perhaps the spring wildflower I miss most when its radiant yellow flowers die back; a pair of wood anemones (Anemone quinquefolia), which often mass impressively at woodland margins; Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), a master colonizer that overtakes fallen stumps and rocks as easily as it does rich, moist soil; Indian cucumber-root (Medeola virginiana), a whorled perennial with an edible root that tastes like . . . you guessed it; and a delicate painted trillium (Trillium undulatum) rising from the moss at the edge of a stream.
