unhelpful tips and resources for gifs&gfxs

Hi everyone, I don’t know how useful this post will be but I wanted to share some of the things I learned through the years of creating content for tumblr and also new information I find every now and then. I see lot of new people who start creating content here and I want to help with what I know.

Note: I won’t upload any tutorial of mine or anything because I believe the resources I will link here will be more useful than just a tutorial that I won’t be able to explain well because English is not my first language. Let’s start!

First of all, few words about tumblr and how it works. Tumblr is a site with many communities. Every user has its own blog that can post many kinds of content, including a text,photo,video,audio,art etc. When you first join the site it might be overwhelming but in reality, it is not (*whispers* I personally find instagram harder to understand how it works).

Like every site tumblr has its own search bar, tags, likes, reblogs(share on fb,rt on twitter),and follows. When you search a blog to follow and you see their posts you can like their post by tapping on the heart and share(reblog) by clicking on the two arrows button that looks like the recycle icon.

What does reblog mean and do?

Reblog is as we said the “share the post” of facebook, with reblog you don’t repost someone’s content but you share it with your followers and help it to be seen bymore people that way you actually help the creator to promote their creations.

Likes

Unlike, instagram,twitter and facebook, when you like something the website doesn’t recommend the post to your followers unless they go to your blog via their phone and go to your likes page, if you have it unlocked, so basically, likes don’t help with supporting creators as much as reblog does.

Tags

Tagging system on tumblr, in my opinion, is pretty fun both for the op of a post and for the reblogger. With tagging you can organize all the posts on your blog by anything you like. For example, if you tag artworks as #art and you want to find a certain artwork you reblogged a time ago you can just go to the tag and find it.

For op you can use tags the same way as other sites to promote your work, as I remember the first 5 tags will be shown on the general tag like if you search on tumblr #artwork and you have the tag #artwork on the first 5 it will be shown there.. but I am not sure if this changed.

Creating a post

As you can see from your dashboard(timeline on twitter) you have the option to create a text form post, a photo form post.. etc. You can experiment with all of these, don’t be afraid. I will focus on photo form posts because we will talk about gifs and gfxs.

The photo form(with the camera icon) post, is what most content creators use to post their creations like designs/graphics,art/fanart/photography, and gifs.

The site allows you to post 10 photos(if you want to post more I think Text form allows more).

The size of your photos and gifs must be under 20mb for photos and under 10mb for gifs.

As for dimension, tumblr has its own dimension but you can always post whichever you want, the bad thing is that the quality will be reduced on the dashboard and the viewer will have to click on every single photo in order to see the original quality. Here are the dimensions:

For a single photo/gif per columna it is 540px horizonatally

For 2 photos/gifs per columna it is 268px x 268px

For 3 photos/gifs per columna it is 177px x 178px x 177px (be careful the middle one always has to be 178px)

Themes

When you feel comfortable with using tumblr, you can customize your blog with beautiful themes that talented people have shared here!

Gifs/gfxs

In this part, I will provide links and tutorials for gifs and graphics, But first of all you need a program for content creation. The most common one is Photoshop, you can buy a subscription from Adobe(it is expensive) or you can find crack version on the internet.

Chaoticresource has a whole tag for photoshop and many more programs for you to start with photoshop. Not only that they have a whole list of resources for both giffing and graphic making. You can find their tag list with everything you need to here.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with gifs, try different styles and most important have fun!! I know thereis a lot to learn but trust me, it can be pretty fun! Good luck!

1. which drivers do you mainly make gifs for?

my main three are charles, lewis and seb! they also happen to be my favourite drivers on this blog. i love giffing them individually and as a pairing.

2. out of the above (if more than one) who’s your fav to make gifs for and why?

i can’t possibly choose between them. charles’ expressions and mannerisms are to die for. lewis is beautiful and super stylish. i enjoy seb’s quips and wholesome personality. i love them all equally!

3. link the favourite gifset you’ve made and tell me a little about it.

currently, it’s this one of lewis and all his 2020 championship-winning races!

from making the poster template from scratch and adding in all the little details to colouring each gif and tweaking the colour palette, i’m proud of the effort i put in this one. there was a lot i learned from the creation of this set — although there were some stuff i had to fix — and i’m incredibly satisfied with the end result. i wanted to make something as vibrant and radiant as lewis was, and to achieve that self-set goal is liberating. now i'm tempted to rewatch his 2020 season!

i also like my seb x ferrari x red gifset. it’s the second set i made and i learned a lot about colouring from it! i got my hands dirty tweaking the different colouring layers and was genuinely surprised by how well the gifs turned out.

4. link your fav gifset from another creator.

oh this is very very hard because there’s so many i really love. @josefnewgayden's lewis x fashion designers gifset is simply incredible when it comes to their use of blending and layout. @brawn-gp's lewis' 100th win in f1 set has stunning, astoundingly good typography and colouring. @ivettel’s latest seb set is a gfx masterclass; their creations tag also features lots of sets with rotoscoping and other advanced gif effects!

5. off the top of your head, tell me about the most memorable tag you've received.

there are a lot that i love and laugh about in equal measure, like "op i love your colouring!" "op this is insane!" and "OUCHHH!" but one that really stood out to me recently was "op i don't watch racing but your gifset is really nice, the design and colours are really beautiful" which made my heart ache in the best of ways.

6. which f1 media source (post race interviews, sf full accesses, no brakes, etc) is your fav to make gifs from?

honestly anything that is in good quality (1080p and above) and have downloadable links on youtube/other websites is great for me! don't really like torrenting (too much fuss) and screen recording (only for race weekends, otherwise no due to questionable quality). sf full accesses are great, i also like mercedes' videos and f1 compilations (top tens etc) featuring certain drivers.

7. tag someone else!

not entirely sure who's been tagged and who hasn't but @hakkinens @vandoornevettel @goatseb @umflowers @localoptimist if you all want to or have not done it yet <3 as always, no pressure!

So again, we still aren’t sure if we would be doing this since we are aware that some of our personal mutuals in the past have hosted this, but we can do some asking around to see if anyone was planning on doing it again! If not, we would be happy to host this event :)

As for secret santa on tumblr in general, this is how I (🌸) have personally experienced how this type of event goes: so usually there is a form that an op (the creator of the event) would make, asking general questions like what your url is, who your biases are, what your personality type is, things like that! After filling out the form, the op would go through everyone who has filled out the form to see who matches with who, in terms of biases or similar interests you might have with someone else. Next, you would receive a private message from op saying something along the lines of “hey! your secret santa is ___ blog!”. You would then be responsible for sending them anonymous messages over a period of time, getting to know your person! It wouldn’t have to be every day, but just checking in and getting to know one another! Keep in mind, someone would be anonymously messaging you as well! On the last day of secret santa, you would reveal yourself to your person, and make them a gift! It doesn’t have to be a gifset, but it could be a moodboard, gfx, an edit, a video, anything that is meaningful to them that is thoughtful! In addition, the person who would have been anonymously sending you messages would reveal themselves to you too! And that is how secret santa works here on tumblr from my experience!

I know this is a bit confusing, but it’s really fun! Again, we are unsure of past mutuals who may be interested in hosting this event, so we wouldn’t want to “take over” it just in case, but if no one is holding this event, we would like to try! I hope this answers your confusion and if you have any more questions I would be happy to try and explain it better!

My friend's cleansed Dark Urge, Clerdan, and my 'Tav', Eilonwy. We've made it to act 3, and so far had to make a few changes. I had to send him my save game so that he could run lead due to the limitations of his computer. Baldur's gate lower city is really jam packed, and even though my computer (running a 3060 nvidia gfx) can load and play in ultra resolution, even I get stutters now and again.

But we have a dedicated modlist we use that runs very well with the co-op mode.

But, as always, if you run mods, keep them updated with all the updates Larian keeps making.

Indian Wells (pt. 1)

I’ve already been in California for nearly a week, but things have been so busy that this is the first opportunity I’ve had to write down what’s been going on! We’re halfway through the biggest non-slam tournament in tennis, but so far its moniker of ‘Tennis Paradise’ has felt more like a cruel joke than an accurate description.

I spent roughly 24 hours travelling to Palm Springs, where I met my colleague Paul – a freelancer with plenty of experience working for AE. We landed around 8pm and found ourselves onsite less than 12 hours later to get started on a particularly crap rig. Tennis jobs are tricky at the best of times, but there was an added layer of difficulty as this one was to be half-operated remotely from HQ in Hemel.

Everything we do on this job relies on a strong internet connection, and at time of writing IW are yet to provide us with one. It is affecting everybody, but for team GFX in particular this spells disaster. Our UK ops (Carl & Nick) are rendered useless, and worse still, the match scores that we receive directly from the umpires’ tablets fail to reach us, which results in numerous scorelines being incorrect/removed from the screens.

This has meant that Paul & I have had our hands full since the get-go, and things are yet to settle down. The hope had been that we could split shifts and enjoy a fair amount of time to ourselves, but so far we’ve both had to be onsite for virtually the entire time.

The one little ray of sunshine is that I’ve been able to watch some of the action during quieter moments; I’ve done my best to #backtheBrits, watching both Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray – the latter of which felt rather special given that I may not get many more chances to do so.

I also saw an even rarer sight – rain! Despite being assured that IW is one of those places where it never happens, enough of the wet stuff came down for play to be temporarily halted and have the spectators rushing for cover. I watched in amusement from the covered media section as a swarm of ball kids descended on the court with towels, until the rain really started coming down and they went the same way as the crowd. I was less amused later that evening waiting for all the delayed matches to finish!
