there is something unique and deeply special about monkey d luffy as a protagonist. he’s overwhelmingly ADORED by the fandom. he’s consistently the most or at least top 3 most popular characters in the whole series. peoples takes about him are gushingly positive. and that’s… really uncommon.
a LOT of fandoms i’ve witnessed or been in have a tendency to favor characters other than the main character. especially in anime. the main characters are often written as a blank slate for readers/watchers to project onto, but that makes them not as interesting and so they don’t get the fan attention.
but luffy is so far from that. and he’s ALWAYS been this way. we love him so much. he’s the heart of the story and the heart of the fandom in every single way. and i think that speaks to how well-written he is as a character. he’s fun and charming and complex and interesting and he makes us laugh and cry and cheer and hope and love. he’s able to inspire so much joy in people, both in his world but also in this one. and i think that’s really special. i feel so grateful to have found this story that means so much to me, and i’m so grateful that luffy exists.

On the subject of Dinosaur Documentaries...
So Life On Our Planet dropped a few days ago, another installment of this seeming boom of these kind of shows since Prehistoric Planet last year, and it got me thinking about this whole little niche genre.
Tumblr media
The very first "Paleodoc" was released in 1922, made by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to educate museum goers on how the fossils they saw were collected and prepared. This began the format I like to call the "Talking Heads" Paleodoc which is mainly in the form of interviews or narration over actual footage of Paleontologists at work with the occasional "Live" Dinosaur for visual aid. These are by far the most common form of dinosaur documentary you'll find, even today, mainly because they're cheap to produce and fit in the general style of most science documentaries.
For many decades throughout the 20th century, Paleodocs were pretty rare. They would pop up time to time, and with the sudden influx of attention they got after Jurassic Park, we got some really good ones. Yet they were all the same Talking Head types. What really changed the game was the good ol Magnum Opus of the field: Walking With Dinosaurs.
Tumblr media
WWD pioneered the second type of Paleodoc I believe to exist, which are the "In Their World" Paleodocs. These are different in the fact they focus almost entirely on the live visual aids, with the human presence being limited to narration or brief pauses for context. They're meant to simulate the modern nature documentary, like Planet Earth, that focus more on showcasing animal behavior with state of the art filming techniques than being a source of in-depth science.
The success of WWD cannot be overstated, and I have to say I do find the In Their World format a lot more engaging and easier to connect with. They portray the wonder of prehistory spectacularly, letting audiences get emotionally connected in the animal characters the story creates, even if this has lead to criticisms of anthropomorphism. These programs also almost always use real footage of modern day earth for their prehistoric creatures to roam on, which I'm sure is very sad for the people who want to see their favorite dead plants on screen.
The Walking With... series would expand into sequels and spin-offs and Nigel Marven, and other companies like Discovery would jump on the bandwagon and release their own takes on the concept, but by the mid 2010s the format had basically died out. We'd get one or In Their World style doc every few years until we just didn't get anything. Outside of the occasional TV special that reused When Dinosaurs Roamed America footage, it was empty.
It took until Disney's Live Action remake of The Lion King of all things for that pendulum to start swinging again. Seeing those expressionless CGI cats got Jon Favreau thinking about how he could use this technology and the talented people behind it to make something really cool, and we got Prehistoric Planet.
Tumblr media
And, in a repeat of Walking With Dinosaurs, we're seeing more of these In Their World type shows. The original guys behind WWD are even making a comeback with their own series, Surviving Earth. Plus even more little hints and rumors of massive incoming projects from overexcited paleontologists trying not to break their embargo.
It looks like the 2020s will be another resurgence in these types of spectacle Paleodocs, and while a good ol Talking Head will always be there, I can't help but get excited for these animated spectacles and all the weird and wonderful ways they flash those visual aids across our TV screens.

went on a lunch date recently where the guy like. didn't mention what job he did on grindr, just that he'd been working late etc, and then when i got there and mentioned it i asked what he did, and he was like "oh well i work for the police" and i was. immediately shut down, understandably
and later on i asked his opinions abt police brutality, police abuse rates, if he thinks the police should be abolished etc, and later was like, yeah, ethically this is a bad match
but idk like. when ppl tell me they're a cop or a gard (or in the military) on grindr i just block them from the off, bc it's like, well, you're cool w brutality, rape, and abuse, there's no reason you could or should be trusted with an intimate partner. and this guy had mentioned he followed me on twitter and didn't at all seem surprised by my open disgust for his profession, and idk if that was why he didn't mention it up front and thought i wouldn't make a big deal about it (as if) or if he just doesn't mention it to anybody
but i'm still so like ??
like my house has a very explicit no cops policy. if sb else brought their partner or brother or whatever to dinner and they were a cop, they would be told to fucking leave. as if i'm gonna fuck one myself

The biggest thing that keeps me moving I think is my vision of the future, of waking up and drinking coffee every morning with my husband and our rescue dogs on our homestead in the forest, picking berries and fruit and veggies to preserve later, tending to the cows and sheep and bees, providing everything for ourselves and living in our own little circle of the world, away from everything and yet so absolutely entwined with everything.

Really thinking that the Shin Soukoku reunion is one of the funniest yet simultaneously heartwarming scenes we have gotten thus far. Because YES! Absolutely give me that way Atsushi takes one look at vampire Akutagawa and has absolutely zero sympathy like, "Hey. Idiot. Snap out of it and give me answers! You think being infected by vampirism can excuse you from explaining yourself think again, stupid!"
Atsushi really channeled the "if me being a mindless tiger didn't excuse me from my crimes, being a vampire doesn't excuse you from shouting our usual philosophical and existential crises while we battle our hearts out" energy.

Listening to instrumentals from the silly doo-wee-ooo show is actually something that can be so painful.
#doctor who#doctor who music#murray gold#segun akinola#musings about music#this is specifically about 10's theme in vale decem. the long song in 11's regen piece. and clara's theme in face the raven / clara's diner#i get psychic damage everytime i simply hear the use of the motifs elsewhere because of the tragic associations those sadder renditions hav#obviously these songs aren't the only examples in doctor who but they are by far the most emotionally devastating ones for me personally#and obviously it isn't just leitmotifs either. basically hearing any piece that played during a sad scene gets to me.#how are you supposed to explain to your coworkers that you're tearing up because of instrumental sound association?#'yeah sorry these violins and humming sounds summoned vivid images of my favourite character dying/leaving and it made me sad'#love that composers can just straight up pavlov bell your emotions by getting you to associate a melody with a sad scene#an addition to this is doctor who instrumentals that make me nostalgic because I associate them with my own past#like 'this is gallifrey: our childhood. our home'. that song was one of my alarms for a good long while back when i was 15ish#so it kinda transports me back to that time in my life whenever i hear it. music really is its own little kind of time travel#i am very much looking forward to the continuing psychological damage murray gold will inflict upon me in the new season#and to have previously uplifting character leitmotifs used against me and forever be contaminated with sad feelings. love to see it#(also: not a instrumental but damn 'the stowaway' has no right being as good as it is. who knew a christmas sea shanty could sound so great#apologies for this probably niche-ish post (is it niche to know ost title's by heart? asking for friend). just feeling things about music

This has been a long-time coming post, so here it is finally! A list of my current affiliates, exclusives & mains, along with an explanation for what each term entails. ALSO: if you're on this list and you would like to be moved to another category than the one I wrote your url in (i.e: from mains to exclusives) you can ask and we'll go from there! Same goes if we've interacted and/or plotted a lot with our muses and you'd like to be listed somewhere on this post as well!
AFFILIATES = These portrayals are so deeply intertwined with my characters and they've affected my muses' canons in such a way that you simply can't separate them from my muse in their main verse (and sometimes in AUs too). My muses will bring these characters up in interactions with other people as easily as breathing, and any relevant headcanons + backstory posts will mention these portrayals as part of my muses' canons. (This applies to every sort of bond, btw - romantic, platonic, familial and enemy dynamics have been listed here.).
@deathfavor's SEIROKU, for Soma. (also exclusive)
@ofdraiocht's KANETATSU, for Naotora. (also exclusive)
@shinanai's FEITAN, for Shalnark. (also main, considering -> exclusive)
@planetarii's WILLIAM, for Langris. (also exclusive)
@ascendedstar's CYNO, for Heizou. (also exclusive)
@beastincidents's HII, for Mihai.
@valkyrrhic's TAKEHIKO, for Tomo, Enzo & Shuusei. (also exclusive)
@inhaunts's AKANE, for Shuusei.
@chiheru's CHIHIRO, for Ezekiel. (also exclusive)
@lunargifted's EDWARD, for Ango (also exclusive).
@isolov's HUXLEY, for Eric (also exclusive).
EXCLUSIVES = I will only interact with ONE portrayal of the characters listed below (namely, with the portrayal mentioned here) in these specific match-ups. I will, however, interact with other people rping these characters with other muses of mine - just not with the muses I've specified below.
@truethes' ASH, for Gear.
@truethes' LICHT, for Lawless.
@destinywoven's GIYU, for Toshiro.
@ahlite's LUMINE, for Tarquin.
MAINS = The PRIMARY portrayal I'll refer to when my muse talks about a character, and the portrayal I'll most likely reply to the fastest. This is a slightly downgraded version of exclusives, in that I will interact with other portrayals of these muses in these same match-ups, but the people mentioned here will generally be my go-to for plots etc anyway. I may eventually also take more than one main per muse, IF the chemistry & required development is there.
@deathfavor's CHROLLO & KALLUTO, for Shalnark.
deathfavor's KUROKO, for Naotora.
@dragonflyhouse's SHIRO, for Aijiro.
dragonflyhouse's KOJIRO, for Soma & Naotora.
@dangaer's SHIN, for Toma.
@destinywoven's TOGE, for Yuta.
destinywoven's YAMI, for Langris.
@ascendedstar's AKIVILI, for Aha.
ascendedstar's LUMINE & LYNETTE, for Lyney.
@lifesliced's BEYOND, for A.
lifesliced's GEVANNI, for Tobias.
@beastincidents' NOBIMARU & INARI, for Mihai.
beastincidents' IMARI & NANAO, for Aijiro & Mikito.
@rotjoy's SAMPO, for Nikolai.
@isolov's KENJI, for Marin.
@inhaunts's CLARICE, for A.

And I'm like I want to belong to this but first I'm scared as shit of twitter there is so much drama and second groups of friends are already formed and third I don't think I'm interesting enough to stand out and belong to this community?? Anyway I'm renting. THOUGHTS? (Said in this Nathan Foad voice, you know the one) thanks

i think baxter would be a swashbuckler rogue if he was a dnd character, it fits him
the subclass abilities are also so fucking funny to imagine for him like
Rakish Audacity
Starting at 3rd level, your confidence propels you into battle. You can give yourself a bonus to your initiative rolls equal to your Charisma modifier.
You also gain an additional way to use your Sneak Attack; you don't need advantage on the attack roll to use your Sneak Attack against a creature if you are within 5 feet of it, no other creatures are within 5 feet of you, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll. All the other rules for Sneak Attack still apply to you.
Panache
At 9th level, your charm becomes extraordinarily beguiling. As an action, you can make a Charisma (Persuasion) check contested by a creature's Wisdom (Insight) check. The creature must be able to hear you, and the two of you must share a language.
If you succeed on the check and the creature is hostile to you, it has disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than you and can't make opportunity attacks against targets other than you. This effect lasts for 1 minute, until one of your companions attacks the target or affects it with a spell, or until you and the target are more than 60 feet apart.
If you succeed on the check and the creature isn't hostile to you, it is charmed by you for 1 minute. While charmed, it regards you as a friendly acquaintance. This effect ends immediately if you or your companions do anything harmful to it.
tell me you don't see him doing this in a fight lmao: dazzling/distracting an enemy into not fighting him to buy time to go poof
i can't decide if him dual wielding shortswords is hotter than him using a classy rapier BUT he'd look great with either style
as for dnd races and background, i can honestly see him as a half-elf noble. half-elves in dnd tend to have a feeling of never belonging anywhere, as a child of two worlds. never quite welcome among elves due to looking too human to them, but being envied or seen as uncanny among humans due to their beauty and longevity. he also gets a resistance to being charmed due to a fae heritage. he would be either a noble or a courtier.
what would motivate him to leave his previous lifestyle to try adventuring? probably going along the lines of step 3 and his subtle acts of rebellion, he took up adventuring as a way to feel like he's doing something meaningful with his time in comparison to his aristocratic parents. he meets mc and their friends (a full dnd party in themselves) and attaches himself to them, telling himself it's only for a short while. but one month turns into two and into three, and he finds that he feels more seen and valued by these people who've (frankly been chaotic all over the place, what would they do without their rogue to finesse them out of slippery situations???) fought monsters and saved towns and villages with him. he never reveals much about himself beyond being a noble from some elven court, but they still make him feel more tangible than his life before. when mc asks him why he puts up with them because they're all so messy in comparison to him, baxter answers that being with them is the happiest he's ever remembered being.
and then he leaves, at some point, leaving a mysterious rogue-shaped hole in mc and the party's hearts.

oc halloween challenge 2023 (Day 25): Better You Die Than I (Trope: Doppelgänger)
In real life, seeing your “doppelgänger” is said to be an omen of misfortune or good luck. In horror movies, doppelgängers usually take a more direct approach in ruining the lives of their lookalike. Whether they’re an omen of bad things to come or trying to steal one’s life, give your oc a doppelgänger and explore the horrors of a stranger that shares your face.
Morgan Wells (E1, “Sentry”) and Jesse Wells (E2, “Jesse Quick/Flash (E2)”), meet Morgan Thawne (E-15, “Reverse Flash”)!
“And who are you supposed to be?” Morgan demanded.
Her and Jesse’s lookalike smiled, as sweet as sugar. “Your doppelgänger, clearly.”
“Clearly,” Jesse mimicked, rolling her eyes. “But what’s your name? Where are you from?”
“Specifically, what Earth are you from?” Morgan added, narrowing her eyes. “You’re clearly familiar with the existence of a multiverse, so the question shouldn’t shock you.”
“Very perceptive,” their lookalike laughed. “You’re Earth-15 to me, so I suppose that makes me Earth-15 to you.
“As for my name, well…it’s Morgan.” She grinned, and a chill shot down Morgan’s spine at the sight. “Though you can call me…the Reverse Flash.”
