Meet the Seiyuu: Jamil Viper

Jamil Viper is voiced by Futaba Kaname and is Futaba's first and only named voice-acting role (though he did provide background voices for the anime ‘The Epic of Fate/Grand Order -Absolute Demonic Front-‘.)

Futaba is mostly active in musical theater, performing in the Prince of Tennis musical among many others, and is also one half of the musical duo TWiN PARADOX with his (older) twin brother Yuu

Futaba hosted a promotion of a Twisted Wonderland pop-up cafe where he discusses being best friends with Rook’s voice actor Itokawa Youjirou, Jamil’s relationship with Azul and a recent, failed attempt to cook an omlette.

(He says he thinks that Jamil and Azul have the potential to become close friends)

Both Futaba twins were cast in the Ouran Host Club musical back in 2021 (as the Hitachiin twins), and the show is currently slated to run again in December of this year, starring both brothers.

On Jamil's birthday, September 12th, the Futaba siblings hosted a special episode of TWiN PARADOX STATION, their live streaming show, and welcomed a special guest: Kalim's voice actor Furuta Kazuki.

They also had a contest between them, singing the same children's song in different styles (a viewer requested "Jamil style", which had to be declined due to contractual restrictions), and ended with the twin's rendition of Saudade by Porno Graffitti.

How much time do you feel Frontiers spent in actual development? It seems like the game's base had been around since 2019 through the leaks, but the overall game seems to be noteably more polised than the last decade of sonic games at best.

I assume the game has been in development since 2017 or 2018. Basically, more or less since they wrapped up on Sonic Forces. That's how these things tend to go.

As I recall, one of the focus group leaks (that I can't find right now) mentioned they thought the game looked very polished visually when they saw it in 2020 or even 2019. Certainly, we saw a clip of what an early (2021) version of the game looked like, with all the effects cranked to max (this is normal, lots of games do this and then things get scaled back during optimization to make the framerate more stable in edge cases). The main changes we know about, both from the focus group leaks, Kishimoto's comments, and the early gameplay clip:

Guardians dropped "orbs", not gears.

Chaos emeralds were tied to earning S-ranks in Cyberspace.

Island progress was gated by fog that was dispelled using the emeralds

Koco elders were originally located at the top of the game's numerous towers

A titan not in the final game is described (a gigantic tree monster)

If you ran out of rings during the titan fight, Amy would provide you with a refill

Obviously, Kronos Island was originally 3x the size it currently is, more in keeping with the size of the Ares and Chaos Islands. This change was probably pretty late, given one of Eggman's audio logs mentions the Starfall Islands consists of three islands, not five. That was recorded and finalized before Rhea and Ouranous were split off from the full size Kronos Island.

I point these out because there's also a tweet from Kishimoto where he straight up admits that Sega entered production of Sonic Frontiers without him, and he came in partway through the project and changed the game around a lot.

How far away were the focus group leaks from that? Who knows. Given that a lot of the focus group leaks were mainly "it's fine, but it's kind of boring" -- maybe they brought back Kishimoto after that as a "fixer" to refine their ideas and point them in the right direction. What did he change? Why did he change it? We may never know.

But the point is, Sega got to a significant gameplay milestone with "Sonic Rangers", something happened, they brought Kishimoto back, and he changed the game into Sonic Frontiers. It's likely that first gameplay milestone took several years, and then adjusting to changing directors took several more years.

None of this seems outrageous to me. Modern games take a long time to make now. And Sonic games have always had it weirdly harder than most in that regard.

This is why I'm saying whatever the next main, big, canonical Sonic game is going to be, we might be lucky to get a teaser by 2026. In truth, it probably won't come out until 2027. Maybe even 2028. Everything takes more work and makes less money than you think nowadays.

That's just what games are at this level. They literally can't go any faster than that without something breaking down along the way.

BLCD Review: Kuroe to Mesu no Sono

Not only does Kuroe wildly misunderstand him, he's weirdly intrigued. Even after hearing Sonogi's story, he's still keen to "study" up on what's happening inside Sonogi's pants! A scary-faced, lovable psychopath toys with a vulnerable, shaved, and untouched new "girl" in this gender-bending romance!

Review Proper

You know, for however stupid that initial plot was, Kuroe to Mesu was actually, dare I say, great.

I know. It’s annoying lmao.

On the surface, it’s like something Momose An or Takasaki Bosco would pull, but it’s unnecessarily deep. 😂 It’s like Ouran High but smutty BL. There. I said it. It doesn’t help that Tachi’s execution of Kuroe was very Mamo-chan Tamaki. I can’t say I can fully forgive the stupid futanari plot, but this shit was funny when it was funny and sad when it was sad. The BLCD’s much more dynamic for obvious reasons, but it maintains the same energy throughout both paper and audio, so I recommend reading the manga along.

Anyway, onto the technicalities,

Dang. Welcome back, Papá Tachi. I was initially annoyed with this casting ‘cause y’all know Tachi’s one of my fave bottoms of all time (Ten Count hello???), and I hate that he only ever gets top roles whenever he comes back to the scene. But if y’all know me, I’m also a whore.

MY GOD. IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I’VE HEARD CHAOTIC TACHI. I really went from “stop it, Tachi” to “step on me, Tachi” back there lmaooooo. It’s like I forgot that one of my fave BLCDs was Shihaisha no Koi where he tops Hirarin (which you should all listen to if you haven’t ‘cause FUCK). I also put him in the “sounds like a bottom but will top you 100%” and “younger guy that will 100% dubcon you”. HIS NAME IS LITERALLY TACHI YANNO (also look at just how accurate my lists are). 😂 Kuroe’s much more of a sadist kookoo-path than Rasheed who’s much more of an ass who thinks he’s hot shit just ‘cause he’s the prince yanno, so there is a bit of a difference in how Tachi performed them. Though, I am sure movic cast him as Kuroe with said performance in mind. I’ve read the manga before I listened to the BLCD and I did have a different idea of how Kuroe would sound like, but when Tachi hit me with that first “Sonomeroooo” I just fell in love. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA SONOMEROOOO I WILL NEVER GET OVER IT. I might not love Kuroe as a character, but shit, this was such a genius portrayal I can’t.

As for Yamati, I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since I last heard him HAHAHAHA THE FUCK. I remember him performing well in Knocking, but he was just ill-suited to that role that it spazzed me out. Thankfully, he was perfect for Sonomero here and had great chemistry with Tachi. Now that’s how you cast! True to his Hanae Natsuki range, the dang man showcased just how good he could squeak here. And even though I majorly dislike those types of bottoms that kinda tread the line of girl almost losing their minds during sex in hentai, Yamati made it so that I didn’t hate Sonomero in bed too much. Tachi himself has stated that he was very impressed with Yamati performing so well when he hadn’t been around that much. Idk. Maybe you’re born with it, maybe it’s Yamati. 

Again, both the manga and BLCD are good buys. In terms of accuracy, though, I’m not sure if censorship is different when it comes to BLCDs, but they had to censor a lot of graphic dialogue in the BLCD and change them into something else. This would’ve been a good Japanese anatomy class (I’m serious) but unfortunately, it becomes more abstract in the BLCD. I did have a few issues with their timing of the bgm (just movic being movic). That scene when the sad piano music played when Sonomero quit and Kurose chases after him— I laughed out loud when it stopped when Kurose went back in to resign then immediately start up again when he came back. Like wtf??? HAHAHAHAHA. But that’s about it. I 100% recommend this if you’re looking for stupid porn with sad plot. I don’t believe I have anything that’s similar in ratio, though, so this might be a first of its kind.

COMING SOON - ANIME UPDATE V3

“V3″ in this case stands for “Version 3″. I did the V1 series of posts from late 2019 to the end of 2021, then did the V2 posts in 2022 and 2023. Time for another shake-up, once more before the last time.

Vinland Saga S2 will continue with its second half, and once I'm done with it, and once I'm done with it, the newly revived Kimi ni Todoke will be taking its place, itself to be followed by Vision of Escaflowne once I'm done with it.

Hunter x Hunter will continue to the end this year, and once I'm finally done with it, Fullmetal Alchemist will be taking its place.

SHUFFLE! will be a new anime I start up, and along with it will soon come the 13 episode AIR. Jun Maeda's prototype for CLANNAD, Kanon, would be the most likely to take its place afterwards.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works draws to a close, soon to be replaced by The Case Files Of Lord El Meloi II.

Konosuba will be taking over from Re:ZERO (talk about whiplash!), and once its done, its place will be taken by Black Cat.

Symphogear XV will finish off the Symphogear series, and once that's done, K-On!! will be taking its place.

Eureka Seven will continue through the year, and once I'm done with it, I'll finally look back to the Gundam franchise with Gundam Wing.

Gintama will be returning as well. with me finally getting closer towards the really good parts.

My #1 post of 2022

OPEN - OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB MUSES/VERSE ONLY.

Nezuko did not believe Ouran Academy would accept her. She was a C- student with a history of school fights and dress code violations. It seems the headmaster is DESPERATE for Ouran’s girls sports team to excel. She will miss Kimetsu, but she did not object to accept the school’s scholarship offer. The food is better, it looks better, the uniforms remind her of her goth lolita dolls, and she would gain attention as the most athethic girl in the school. Most importantly, the money the headmaster is offering will help her family. 

Tanjirou was dropping her off with the Kamado Bakery van since Ouran is too far for her to walk. Zenitsu is crying to see her leave, and Inosuke did not seems enthusiastic either. She can tell they are disappointed seeing her leave, which makes it harder to say goodbye. With a hug from her TWIN and a cheek kiss to her older brother, she grabs her schoolbag and runs to the front gate.

So, I was watching Heartstopper earlier tonight. Bit late to the party I know, it's absolutely brilliant - and I'm at Episode 8. Will likely give the Graphic Novels a better look now that I'm invested. But it mainly got me thinking about the gay representation I had growing up.

So I'm both bisexual and non-binary, but will often just over simplify and say queer. Gotta reclaim the slur that was tossed at me essentially daily from Grade 9 onwards and all that. I properly came out as bisexual at 25 years old, letting all my family know. Non-binary is on hold until I have a better way of describing it than "I'm a man in the same way that Eragon was an adaptation of a book".

I truly think that a reason it took me so long to come out was that queer representation was just not there in the mid-2000's and early 2010's when I was in a constant state of teenage depression, with a dash of a full on gay panic.

It was an era of queer-baiting, taking whatever scraps were given, and just filling in the gaps. My heartstopper was movies like Dead Poet's Society, shows like Ouran High School Host Club, and the like. Others likely filled the gap, but those are the ones I clinged onto.

Now, queer media is everywhere. Things are coming a long way in a fast time, and I hope that if Ed grows up and realizes he's queer, or a they, or a she - there's no need to come out. I hope nothing needs to be explained, because I'm really bad at explaining things. That he won't need to grapple with his identity because he doesn't hear the term non-binary until 2021.

You thrust Heartstopper in my face in 2011, and you bet your ass I'm going to understand things better then thinking "damn, I wish I had a friend like Neil Perry in my life." Representation matters, and more and more people will get to have the queer youths that were stolen from us. I hate that I didn't get mine, but seeing others get it? That brings a smile to my face.

Favorite Anime By Year

Sooo... I tried to do a “like” game I found on Twitter where for every like, I would reveal my favorite anime that aired in a year, but...I didn’t get any likes. (Not really surprising. I think most of the people who follow me on Twitter are figure skating fans, not anime fans.) I had already gone through the trouble of making the list just in case, though, so instead of it just letting it go to waste, I’d thought I would post it here!

Note: This list is by air date, not necessarily when I watched the series in question. Also, I wanted variety, so even though some series were consistently my favorites for several years in a row, I only listed them once and chose the second place series instead. For example, the Fruits Basket reboot was my favorite series from 2019-2021, but I only listed it officially for 2021. (Not necessarily because the last cour was my favorite, but because the second place series for 2019 and 2020 were stronger favorites than my second place for 2021 (which was The aquatope on white sand, if you’re wondering). Starting with 1995, because that’s when I discovered Sailor Moon, which kicked off my love of anime!

Seven Against Thebes, and The Persians (~525-456 BCE), by Aeschylus- his works were surprisingly fun to read!

Strip Tease (1993), by Carl Hiassen- I grew up in Central Florida, so of course I’m a fan of Hiaasen’s. My first time reading one of his adult works- I enjoyed it! There was only one glaring moment of ‘female character poorly written by a man’, for the most part it was fine, haha

The Bacchae and Other Plays (484-406 BCE), by Euripides- the Bacchae was my favorite, because the women-hating man got ripped to shreds at the end! But they were all interesting I have many thoughts about all of it

Ven Polypheme novels 1-3 (2014), by Elizabeth Haydon- absolutely delightful, love the world building and the way she talks about magic.

Homestuck (200-2016)- my 4th or 5th reread I think? and I still haven’t read Rose’s sburb walkthrough. This is so lame but I got great entertainment from reading out loud to myself, using character voices.

Ouran High School Host Club (2002), by Bisco Hatori- also one of many rereads. It’s one of the first manga I ever read. My family moved states when I was in high school, and the library where we ended up didn’t have the last couple volumes for me to finish the series...so I bought the box set, haha! No idea where I got the money for that at age 16. I kept catching myself smiling while reading. I’m still madly in love with Mori.

Tiger, Tiger (2018-present), by Petra Erika Nordlund- I used to read a ton of webcomics all the time, but I stopped for some reason. Most of the ones I’d been following ended and I never bothered to start new ones, I guess. While I was in the process of moving and all my books were packed seemed like a good time to start a new one. And I was not disappointed. The art? Awe-inspiring. The story? Delightful. There are a lot of really good names, too. If you’re insane about names, like me, just know, there’s a dude named Rakkatak. Highly, highly recommend.

Treasure Island (1883), by Robert Louis Stevenson- quick read, and highly enjoyable! GOD I love pirate stories. Treasure PLANET has long been a favorite of mine, but this was my first time reading the original. The line towards the end ‘I think we were all pleased to be so cheaply quit of him’ will stick with me as a succinct summary of the differences between the two tellings, I think.

Shadow Raiders (2012), a novel by Margaret Weis and Robert Krammes- I picked this one up at a book sale because it had a dragon on the cover. It is a completely unnecessary 700 pages long, and it doesn’t even end at the end, it’s part of a series! It took a long time to get into it, but the part in the middle where the two main story lines converged and there was a big battle was very compelling. Then it got slow again immediately after. I like the concept and worldbuilding, I have mixed feelings about the storytelling, and I have serious doubt that the characters were written to their fullest potential. Not sure if I’m gonna go looking for the rest of the series, hmmmm

Sakana (2010-present), by Mad Rupert- longtime favorite webcomic started updating again after a long hiatus, so I did a reread so I’d be refreshed and ready for new pages. God, I love Sakana, Sakana is so good

Metamorphoses (8 CE), by Ovid- took a little bit of a hiatus in the middle of this one but I finished it! I still have a hard time believing that this work is considered a comedy- there’s a lot of individual tragedies on parade here if you ask me. But it was an interesting read, I liked it

Holes (1998), by Louis Sachar- first reread in (checks watch) 16 years. I’ve thought about this book a lot ever since first reading it in fifth grade. I saw it at Target one day and it was in my basket before I could even blink. I still love it, I couldn’t put it down. Finished it in like 3 sittings.

Wayne Family Adventures vol. 1 (2021), by CRC Payne and Starbite- love, love, love the art style and all the colors. The individual episodes themselves were very short but still highly entertaining, fun quick read.

Darth Bane trilogy (2006-2009), by Drew Karpyshyn- to say I was obsessed with reading Star Wars books as a kid would be a grave understatement. Before I had a personality, I had Star Wars. Now that I’m an adult and building up my own book collection, I’ve been slowly bringing a few back into my life. The Bane books truly captured my imagination when I was younger, and I still love them so unbelievably much. I could go on all day about outwardly opposing philosophies and Force specialties and the way wielding power changes and harms you and, and, and... not quite done yet, so this series’ll be finished up in 2024!
