#palaeo meme
Text
anyway just because I saw a different permutation of this meme I have to share literally my favourite version of it:
Tumblr media
It's just so perfect. The amount of blackout text. The fact it works without additions. The succinctness of the phrase. The palaeontology basis. The way it implies that tetrapods only left the water and evolved in 1562.

Another practice meme redraw. I was originally doing Blocky Palaeo but the bottom one started being divine so I ran with it. I've only done two of these so far but I suddenly understand the value of the exercise. Redraws cut down the "mental load" of making art into something more startable, which makes you more likely to actually draw, and all drawing is practice, so oops you actually practiced.

Round One: Ngwevu vs Kholumalumo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Ngwevu ntoloko
Tumblr media
Artwork by @i-draws-dinosaurs, written by @i-draws-dinosaurs and @zygodactylus
Name meaning: Grey skull
Time: ~190 to 180 million years ago (Pliensbachian to Toarcian stages of the Early Jurassic)
Location: Clarens Formation, South Africa
Ngwevu is a dinosaur with a case of baby-face so bad it was classified as another genus for 40 years. Initially discovered in 1978 and thought to be a specimen of Massospondylus, turns out it was just a really baby-looking prosauropod of a different kind! Many times in evolution animals will retain “baby” characteristics into adulthood - the classic and easily recognizable trait being large, round eyes, but also other features such as stunted proportions and chunkier limbs, depending. It seems that Ngwevu went through one of these processes, looking more similar to juveniles of other prosauropods (such as Massospondylus) than adults, all while actually being adults themselves. Predictably, it had a squat face with large eyes, a wide snout, robust proportions, and a thick body - babified Massospondylus! It probably had a more generalist diet than its cousin, indicating probable niche partitioning as the two lived in the same environment. The Clarens Formation, coming right after the Elliot, was an arid desert dominated by dunes, with a few types of dinosaurs including ornithischians, theropods, and other sauropodomorphs. In addition, fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates are also known from this location.
Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum
Tumblr media
Artwork by @alphynix, written by @i-draws-dinosaurs
Name meaning: Kholumolumo (giant reptilian dragon from Sotho folklore) named for Paul and François Ellenberger (the original excavators of the fossils)
Time: 210 million years ago (Norian stage of the Late Triassic)
Location: Lower Elliot Formation, Lesotho
Kholumolumo is an old friend with a new name. Its previous informal name, “Thotobolosaurus” meaning “trash heap reptile”, was truly magnificent and became one of the great memes of Ye Olde 2010s Palaeo Tumblr! Needless to say it was a bittersweet moment to see our old buddy finally published but lose its iconic name in the process. Rest in peace, Trash Heap Lizard.
The reason it wound up with that name is because the fossils were in fact found basically right next to the local rubbish dump of the village of Maphutseng in 1955. The trash pile turned out to be sitting on a bone bed of around five to ten animals, and over the course of several years they were excavated and moved to the University of Cape Town. Unfortunately, and perhaps appropriately to the name, the subsequent study of these fossils ended up being a complete trash fire. Specimens went missing that have never been found, professional relationships fell apart, and the animal itself wasn’t mentioned in the literature until 1970 when it was dropped into a discussion on the stratigraphy of the Elliot formation and named “Thotobolosaurus mabeatae” without any description of the fossils. This made the name “Thotobolosaurus” a nomen nudum (naked name) and thus invalid.
Finally in 2020 all the tribulation paid off and it received a proper initial description, although many fossils that weren’t lost in the chaos still remain under study and could be the subject of future papers. It’s nice to see our beloved trash heap of a dinosaur finally coming into its own!

Amphibia understands that the "feathered dinosaurs aren't scary" argument is bullshit.
Plus I must say that their creature designs in general are ingenious like the ant queen and the hermit crab-slash-bus.

I hate it when people are trying to correct science (specifically palaeo) misinformation being spread and people respond with "wow you gatekeeping selfish hoarding jerks".
Just because you don't like someone's tone (which could be an issue, it's not like people can't be actual jerks about this stuff), it doesn't mean the issues being addressed aren't relevant and bringing them to attention makes you the fun police or whatever.
Science communication with the general public is honestly abysmal, and I honestly can't blame people if they're frustrated for the constant spread of misinformation, especially if you're Autistic or otherwise ND and you can't help but be pedantic over specific things.
Of course try not to be a jerk, but I just hate general accusations that people are always jerks or elitist for this stuff. I've seen enough of tumblr deriding academics to know it's not even a science exclusive issue.
Memes spread. Quick, easy to grab your attention info bites spread. That's what the internet has trained us into consuming. Doesn't mean it's not an issue when misinformation runs rampant.
Not quite sure this is coherent, but I hate the presumption that coming in to correct something is almost always just an excuse to flaunt your knowledge and act superior. It belittles that people are capable of learning and don't need things dumbed down, and promotes cynicism.
To be fair, I'm already cynical about this post-truth hellscape, but... you get what I mean. Cynicism towards people's intentions. Just because a few might be jerks, it shouldn't be assumed.

Extinction; or, where else on the internet you can find me
Hey all!
Thanks for still following Plasticozoic. I know I haven’t been very active on here for ages, other than random memes here and there, and there’s reasons for that.
Reason #1 is real life got in the way. I moved cities at the end of 2018 and spent a few months scrabbling to get on my feet. As it turns out, being unemployed and watching your savings trickle down does not help you maintain a blog. I’m doing way better now though, despite the general state of 2020.
Reason #2 is just that I’m not as into tumblr as I used to be. I only check it like once a day and reblog some stuff onto my main before I do something else.
And finally, reason #3 is that I’m not the only one who’s fallen off of tumblr lately, and since I started this to network with palaeo-people, there’s not much point to keeping this going.
But just because I’m not updating this blog anymore doesn’t mean you can’t follow my palaeo-shenanigans elsewhere!
You can follow my science twitter here. It’s mostly retweets of cool new discoveries and palaeoart, with a smattering of memes here and there.
Or if you’re more interested in visuals, I’m running an instagram account: @dinosaurs_of_melbourne This one’s a little more for fun, but I’m putting as much real science as I can into it as well.
Again, thank you for following Plasticozoic, and I hope to see you around the net soon. :)

ask meme 12: palaeoblr or paleoblr
Palaeoblr is the only correct spelling, I am Australian and I say this is true.
... Also I think paleoblr’ was already claimed by the palaeo diet people so ‘palaeoblr’ is technically the “official” palaeontology tumblr name so yay national biases confirmed!

I busted my ass hard today on this one. Saw exercises where artists would redraw/paint memes for practice so I picked the lofi study girl to practice environments. This is...maybe eight hours? It was good to take a wax break. Enjoy with or without headphones. The little spirit cat is my ragdoll Tiger Lily. She passed away just shy of 20 years old about three years ago and I miss her terribly. I always feel like she's still there in the corner of my eye watching the birds.

Round Two: Kholumalumo vs Amanzia
Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum

Name meaning: Kholumolumo (giant reptilian dragon from Sotho folklore) named for Paul and François Ellenberger (the original excavators of the fossils)

Amanzia greppini
Tumblr media
Artwork by @i-draws-dinosaurs, written by @i-draws-dinosaurs
Name meaning: Named for 19th-century geologists Amanz Gressly and Jean-Baptiste Greppin
Time: 157 million years ago (Kimmeridgian stage of the Late Jurassic)
Location: Reuchenette Formation, Switzerland
Amanzia has been through a real odyssey of classifications. First discovered c. 1860, it was mistaken for a theropod and named Megalosaurus meriani in the 1870s, reclassified as a sauropod and named Ornithopsis greppini in 1922, then re-reclassified as a species of Cetiosauriscus in 1927, and then basically ignored ever since. Poor guy’s got an identity crisis now.
The actual fossils weren’t properly cleaned until 2003, and subsequent study in 2020 named it and revealed it was probably a turiasaur, an early-branching group of large sauropods that was unknown before the 2000s, so nobody working on it in the century and a half beforehand could have had any idea what they’d really found!

The inherent eroticism of 2 dinosaurs that have absolutely nothing to do with each other and never met each other irl due to time and location constraints but a bunch hairless apes in the future pit you against each other as legendary rivals who have 500 pages of backstory

(Disclaimer the last pic is me as a kid pitting my Safari Giganotosaurus and Miragaia because they look cool plus the Miragaia is probably the most accurate dinosaur in this whole list rn)

The next big palaeo meme shall be naked tailed Alvarezsaurs! (Evil laugh). But seriously, is there any evidence against this? Gerbils and rats are in the same family, so it isn't really that far fetched for some maniraptors to have naked tails.
There isn’t, to my knowledge, evidence against it.
