So I'm at a convention and I'm going through the nice little dealer's room and, like many smaller conventions, there are authors and artists and whatnot. I stop by one to check it out.

He writes Speculative Fiction. He wanted to do "something different" so he taught himself to write and produce audio dramas. Cool, right?

And then he, oh so proudly, says that he used AI for the art and voices.

I tell ya, the 180 I did on maybe checking this shit out to straight out saying "I don't fuck with AI" would've left Wile E Coyote reeling.

For a writer to essentially say that they don't value visual art or voice acting as real art that should be paid for while trying to encourage me to check out his writing?

Just. People are wild sometimes ig

One big problem when it comes to "generative AI" is that people who defend it think that when artists say that it's harmful to them, it's an opinion.

It is not.

This isn't a discussion. We are not inviting a debate. We are stating a fact, because we actually know and understand how it works and how making art works.

We are stating a fact in the same way that scientists are stating a fact when they say that global warming is real and man-made. And much like that scenario, sure, you have a right to disagree, but that doesn't make you any less factually incorrect, nor does it make your beliefs as valid as those of the people who actually know what they're talking about.
